Almost 100 models or groups of models. A: Number of cameras returned per 100 cameras. Note: Older cameras have more chance to have been returned more frequently (than newer cameras). So this number does not tell us a lot about toughness. But readers gave the number of months they have had the camera (column B) and the number of photographs taken with their camera. A somewhat meaningfull measure of toughness is then possible (column C). B: Average age of camera (months). C: Number of returns (for service) per 100,000 clicks (rounded to .1) Average for all cameras is 16,6 (not 11 as I reported earlier) D: Share (%) of all cameras own by readers. If you multiply this % by approx. 15,000, you get, for example, that 56 Nikon F and 195 Pentax KX have been considered in the survey. Models with less than 25 cameras surveyed are grouped (i.e. all leica, all topcon, all mamiya etc.) Global results (average number of returns per 100,000) for a few brands: N*k*n 7 Pentax9,6 Ol*mp*s 15,8 K*n*c* 15,8 F*j*c* 15,8 AVERAGE 16,6 M*n*lt* 17,5 Pr*kt*c* 28,7 There are many comments in the text (for example, most common types of repairs are mentionned for many models). Also average cost of repair and average delay (not interesting as it relates to one country and back then). I seriously doubt the survey's methodology. If not knowing numbers which they wouldn't know (number of total cameras in use of that particular type compared to defect ones), it's meaningless. The methodology itself seems OK. If we believe that these 15000 cameras behaved in a typical way... but it's not a question of believing... Is 15,000 enough? Is the margin of error too high? Andre Or did they use different methodology? Please dig out the article, so we can be sure :) Frantisek P.S.: thanks! FS Friday: For Your Consideration Prior to E*ay
As mentioned earlier.. here goes nothing :( FS: K1000 body - in KEH EX to EX+ condition - small mark on external top of prism BUT other than that everything is bang on and in perf condition. Also has all the little do-dads that cover up the sync connectors and comes with body cap. Asking $80 US plus shipping or decent fair offer :) SMC-M 135mm f3.5 - Yep.. it's the same one that everyone raves about on Stan Halpin's site. Comes in KEH EX+ to LN- condition with both caps.. I'll be kicking myself for letting it go.. but now that I have the 35-105 zoom the 135 seems a bit too close for comfort to the 105 top end. Asking $60 US plus shipping. Nothing below $50. SMC-M 28 f2.8 - Ya... it's not as good as say the f3.5 that everyone talks about but it's 28mm.. what more do you want ? :) Ok.. it's fast too.. there.. and clean.. and in the same KEH EX+ condition but with a wee bit of brassing on it. Asking $65 US plus shipping. Nothing below $55 s'il vous plait :) (yes yes.. I know.. it's not on topic here BUT) Leica CL with 40mm f2 Summicron Lens - It's in user condition - KEH BGN to EX condition - a fair amount of brassing, one ding (no affect on range finder focussing), meter is bang on, and the glass is perfect. Comes with rubber lens shade, and Hoya filter which lives on the little lens and a Canon strap.. ya.. I know.. weird.. but hey.. that's how I got it :) Asking $525 US plus shipping Interested ? If so, contact me off list. I should have pics if required by tomorrow/today sometime and I plan on posting these on Ebay sunday evening so y'all got till then ya hear ? :) Cheers, Dave - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. I'm in much the same situation as you there. The easiest thing you can do is to ask the company to define pro (don't ask us, we can't decide). I'd love to start selling big framed prints but since I haven't even finished organising last years slides, that dream's a long way off yet... So is the best strategy simply to lie to the agent? ;-) No. If you're caught you won't get insurance. The extent of coverage also varied from company to company. Worst case was the actual price paid for the specific covered item. The rest would pay actual cash value of a comparable item, e.g., if I paid KEH $200 for a used item 4 years ago, and it now goes for $300, it should be insured for the higher amount. So what does one do in cases where the (used) item comes available infrequently, seldom, or rarely? With my insurance company I had to insure my gear in my household contents. They would not allow me to create a separate policy just for my photographic equipment. I had to upgrade to the premier policy to get replacement value cover. Anything worth more than NZ$2,000 has to be specifically declared, so I had to get some written replacement-value quotes from the camera shop. A lot of my gear is not replaceable so it was quoted with the nearest- equivalent new product, eg FA300/4.5 for A*300/4, MZ-S for Z-1p. Despite the replacement gear being newer I still couldn't bear to think of losing my old manual focus lenses. When I insured my gear early this year, my policy was out of date anwyay. Even though the total insured value more than doubled, plus upgrading to a better policy, it only costs me a few dollars more per month. And I now have a little more peace-of-mind. However, during this year 2002 celebrating such an important anniversary, I'll be happy to extend to all PDML members the reduced cost per poster ($2.00 each). Then non-members will pay $4.00 each poster. Great! I checked the cost of carton tubes and postage for shipping it worldwide from Italy (priority mail). For the full details following the link: http://digilander.libero.it/pentaxday/postere.htm I'm interested in two posters. As I'm living in Germany, this should cost 9.50 Euro (shipping in Europe, rolled). Do you have a bank account at your Post? Re: A 400/5.6 opinions?
Hi, The A 400/5.6 and the M* and A* 300/4s are not interchangeable by ny means. I've had an A 400/5.6 and an A* 300/4. The 400 is extremely well made and very sharp. I used to shoot it with an LX and winder and I shot quite a lot of wildlife in South Africa, although I've never shot motor sports. The balance on a tripod is very good and it is quite easy and quick to focus. I also used it a lot on a bean-bag. I wouldn't consider hand-holding it at all. I don't think the 300mm lenses have a tripod mount, do they? I can't remember. They're ok on a bean bag, of course, but that makes focusing slightly awkward because the ring is restricted. I didn't use it very much with a TC. You need really to have the proper Pentax ones, which are expensive and hard to find. I used a T6-2X and a A-2XL. On the 400mm these made the vf very dark, but I did get some successful photos of wildlife using them, particularly when I used the sports finder on the LX, which is paradoxical. If I had to choose between the 400mm and one of the 300mms, I'd choose the 400mm lens. --- Bob mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Friday, July 12, 2002, 3:04:06 AM, you wrote: Hi all, I sometimes try my hand at shooting motorsports (motorcycle roadracing to be specific) and my current longest lens of 200mm just doesn't give me the range for the shots I'm after. So, I'm looking to purchase a telephoto that is somewhat longer. I'm considering the A 400/5.6 but cannot seem to find any objective or subjective data on this lens. On the other hand, I've read tons of glowing reviews of the 300/4, both A* and M*. I'd consider this lens if folks think the overall quality is such that the sacrifice in focal length would be worth it. I only get out to shoot the races a few times a year so whatever lens I get would likely server other purposes as well (wildlife perhaps). Also, comments on the use of this lens with a teleconverter would be welcome. One recurring comment about the 300mm is its handling. This is not a requirement but being able to handhold this would be a nice bonus. Any comments on this front for both lenses would be appreciated. I noticed that the 400mm has a collar. Can anyone comment on the balance of this lens when mounted (would be with LX body with or without motor drive)? I often use a tripod anyway and would consider a monopod for the races if this is considered a good option with this lens. On a simliar note, how is the 300mm when the camera is tripod mounted? Is there much flex at the mount? Well, I guess that's enough for now. The more opinions the better. :-) Thanks in advance, Garth - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re[3]: MZ-S
Hmm... sententious as usual. As we both shoot slide and nature, we can't be that different in tastes when assessing good exposure after all. So it must be the cameras. Likely the MZ-S and PZ-1p read the additional DX exposure latitude info that allows it to recognize the slide film and balance the multisegment algorithms accordingly towards neutral or slight underexposure. On the contrary, my MZ-5n lack the pins for DX exposure latitude, so it assumes it's always loaded with negative film, hence in *certain* *conditions* it exposes for shadows, something that is perceived as overexposure on slide . And this is not a malfunction, it's simply the intended behaviour as others have confirmed. Personally I'm not bothered at all as I use the spot meter anyway for all my slide work - and I rarely miss it. Servus, Alin Pål wrote: PJ Sorry, but if this is to be expected then the camera can be PJ considered defective and should be in for an adjustment. AF Still, in my experience over-exposures of +1 to +2.5 EV are to be AF expected from the multisegment and this gives a high hit rate with AF negative film. - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: A 400/5.6 opinions?
Garth, I own the A 400/5.6 and I think it's a great value and a fine lens. It appears that most of my use will be indoors, shooting school events from the back of the auditorium. I've developed just a few shots, outdoor shots taken at f/5.6 and f/8, and have been pleased with the sharpness, contrast, and color. It's delightfully light, almost made for a monopod. And you'll find the 13-foot close-focus distance useful for those unexpected crowd shots. No complaints about the tripod collar; it just works. If you're unsure of the focal length you'll need, seriously consider instead getting a good 300/2.8 (Tokina, Pentax, Tamron, maybe Sigma) and a pair of telecoverters. Cars will snap in and out of focus more crisply at 300/2.8 and 440/4.7 than at 400/5.6. And you'll even have a usable 600/5.6. I can't imagine focusing quickly with a TC on the 400; I tried it with a Pentax 1.4 XL, and the view was OK on a bright day for static objects but nothing you'd want to use for shooting a race. Here are my collected comments on the A 400/5.6; I have URLs to several for sale, mostly in Europe, though KEH has had one for some time at less than $600: As far as I can tell, these puppies are rarer than hen's teeth, probably because of the price (you can get one new from BH for around $1400) and the fact that it has been eclipsed by the AF models. I suspect that it is one of those high quality but ill-timed releases in the Pentax A line of lenses and sold about as well as condoms at a conference of bishops. I have got one of these (SMC400A). IMHO it is a very good lens: sharp and contrasty even wide open. Before that I had the non APO AF Sigma 400/5.6. Compared to this, the Pentax is much much better optically and also much better mechanically. The only advantage of the Sigma was its smaller size (approx 20 cm length). I had to buy a new photobag to accommodate the Pentax. Roger. I bought it used a while back. Overall, I like it. It seems pretty sharp even wide open. I have only used it with slide film so far and have used it with the 1.4 xl converter. I have no complaints with it. It is a little lighter than it looks and has a tripod mounting collar on it. I have never had a different 400mm so I can't compare it. The build quality is good. I wish that I could tell you more about it. I find that I don't use that focal length that much. I tend to use my FA 200 f2.8 much more. You have to keep this one on a tripod always. Handheld doesn't work! If you are interested, I can email you a scan from one of the images. Bruce Dayton I guess you've never heard of a monopod huh? I have shot withh 400,500 and 1000 using just a monopod with good results. JCO Bob Walkden: Hi, The primes I liked best were the SMC-K 28/2, SMC-M 35/2, the SMC A* 85/1.4 and the SMC-A 400/5.6. This does not necessarily mean that these provided the best optical or technical quality, but rather that I enjoyed using them, got a high percentage of good photos from them, and found their handling to be excellent. Bob: Checking the background on this lens and its followers, it appears to have migrated to the K mount without modification. It was relabelled for the M series with the only change being able to focus down to 4 meters rather than the original 8. The A series brought a major change and reformulation for programme control. this added 2 elements in one group and brought the aperture closer to the lens mount. Optically, it would be of interest for a member to comment on this change. On close focus: Bob Walkden: I have some very, very nice full-frame, full-face photos of a tiger taken with an A 400/5.6 from about 2m away. The sunlight catches its eye absolutely perfectly to bring out the colour and brightness. Couldn't have done it with a longer close-focus distance. The reasoning is the same for bird-watching binoculars, apparently.. From http://home.att.net/~alnem/html/pentax_primes.html: The A lens (latest MF 400mm) is a very fine lens. A received a 3/4/5 C. d'I. mark. It is said to be one of the best non APO lenses, the results are very good at f8 and above. Wide open the resolution was less and there was a bit vignetting. Photodo tests: From Photozone Pentax forum: Hi, Looked at a used FA* 400mm 5.6 for $700 yesterday that was just beautiful but has a small flaw on the lens, so I passed on it. However, it is reputed to be a fine lens and the A version your refer to is supposed to be even better. Recommendations for Wide Angle less than 28mm
What seems to be the consensus for the best (in terms of optical quality and build) for a wide angle lens less than 28mm. I am looking for a good, clean, and razor sharp lens with an angle of view greater than 90(degrees) for some landscape work. It is very important that the distortions be minimal since there are a lot of angles and lines in the scene that will quickly reveal imperfections. If you plug a 4P sync cord A into the body terminal, and a 4P sync cord B into the shoe terminal, can you effectively do without a TTL distributor? I ask on behalf of a customer who does not subscribe. Cotty's Duxford Diary Part I
I have a few moments to gather my thoughts while the Mrs and son warp off to do some food shopping. Here's a line or two in anticipation of our impending weekend gathering here in the UK... I've stacked everything that I want to take along on the patio, and it's dawning on me that it isn't all going to fit. Oh yes it is. Somehow. It must. I have to leave a space big enough for? How many boxes? Flight cases? will there be to squeeze in when we drop by Pentax UK later on tonight. Someone rang me this morning - Valerie? Asked if I was the one coming along to pick up 'all this gear'. Yes, I replied. In person? Yes. There's some paperwork, make sure you sign it all 'out', and get the security guard to sign for it on its return on Sunday. What's the name of the company you represent? (Hasn't John Dickins mentioned what we are??) Er, just put 'PDML'. She probably thinks we're a multi-national conglomerate advertising agency or something. Hang on - we're a ramshackle group of wayfarers from all over, most have never met in person, we're...penpals? Sort of. Too long to explain this. Put 'PDML' I tell her and be done with it. After the call, I have a nightmare vision of the security guard asking me for some ID. He will expect my corporate PDML card of course. Oh dear. Good thing she didn't ask me what PDML stands for. Pan Dynamic Mothball Lovers. Pre-Disposed Men Linger. Pee'd Down My Leg. Packed my own gear: leaving not much behind. NiCads charged up, including the LX drive. That really is a beautiful camera - handling it is pure joy. I debate whether to bring the 85mil f 1.4, it's really up for sale. Wouldn't do to dent it this weekend. But it's too good to leave out. I pack it, after all it doesn't *have* to get used. Does it? Wait - what will I be photographing? Aeroplanes. I suppose. I'm not really into that. People. What we need are some decent shots of people - our people - enjoying themselves. Got to get to know them, get to know a bit of their characters, a bit of the real 'them'. Try and capture that. I like that - I shall try and do that. I'll be better at it than swing around on the end of a 600 mm f/4. For God's sake, *f/4* !! I've packed all the film I have, including some 120 which folk can try out in the MF gear. What does a 645N2 look like? Will I be tempted? I don't need the quality. I want the faces - the characters. If nobody uses the 67 monster, I've got a great idea for a shot. Mustn't tell now, hilk hilk. Rang Amateur Photographer on a whim this morning. Spoke to Damien Demoulder - he wrote to the list for a day or two about, what was it? Quality issues?? Can't remember. I told him of the weekend. He was interested. I am to send him a CD with a dozen shots on it, and a few hundred words of copy after the weekend. They might shore up a hole in the news pages I suspect. Better than nothing, and hey - it's the 21st century. People meet this way now. Cl. Soon be time to pack up all the gear. Got some cheapo deck chairs, a ground sheet. Has John Dickins remembered to throw in a banner? God only knows. Should I print off a sheet with PDML on it? What - A4 size? Ridiculous, nobody would see that. I've left my number - they can ring me if they can't find Base Camp. I've had some text messages already! Mike Wilson is in Russia, and *texted* me. Wicked. Jostein did also. This should be fun. I'm so looking forward to it. I remember last year, and the year before, lurking, and reading of Grandfather Mountain, and how folks would be 'heading on up there soon'. It was great to read about it, and then to see the pics - I *wanted* to go there, desperately. I wanted to be a part of that. Damn - I just smashed my knee on the scanner shelf under the desk in my hurry to rush outside and see what that clatter was. I just caught sight of three single-engined planes, formated, heading due east. The direction of Cambridge! How exciting. They weren't Spits - I know exactly what they sound like. They were much smaller. We often get aircraft in transit across the country flying over us - there's a corridor around Brize Norton [an RAF airbase] that they use. A few times I have seen *the* Lancaster bomber. There's only one flying, and that's it. A few times I've seen a Spitfire. There's a DC-3 I've seen loads of times. Must do every single show on the circuit, that one. I've never [still] photographed aircraft in flight. I will try it, manual focus though. Wait - there's an MZ-S in the loan gear. I'll sneak a roll through it if I can. I'm getting into the mood now, the blahs are receding. Just a few hours to go. Time for another cup of tea. Earl Grey. Re: full moon: what went wrong?
Sridhar, Taking a picture of the moon is taking a picture of a landscape in full sunlight! You need the same time and f-stop as you would use on a sunny day. (1/100 second at f 11?) Because most of the framed area is dark, an average metered exposure will try to make the night appear as day. The Moon then is overexposed by many stops. What you have is a cloud of light around the real Moon, because your lens is not prefect and will splash some light near the correct focusing spot. The moon you see above the white cloud of light is an internal reflection of the real moon off of one of the internal surfaces of the elements of your lens. Try a manual setting with a much quicker speed. Regards, Bob S. Re: full moon: what went wrong?
I like to photograph full moons for later double exposures with some urban evening sights around Portland, OR. I use a 200mm SMC Takumar, Velvia 50 slide film, and, of course a tripod. The 200mm doesn't give me a full frame image but one that approximates a full moon in the sky a few hours after moonrise. My exposure is like shooting in bright daylight: 1/250 at f 8. This recommendation came from an article in a photo magazine and it works. Good luck, Jim A. Re: Always at the ready - OT
I just scrolled through several answers of this thread in my digest-mails. I am surprised at so many girls/guys using non-pentax cameras. Pentax equipment seems to be not too much useful for briefcase or pocket (except MX, ME ... with 40/2.8 pancake). No recommendation for handy Pentax viewfinder cameras? Personally I don't have a camera with on way to work. I walk to the station, mount into the train, arrive, walk to the headquarters ... and the same every day, and mostly see the same people. Somewhat annoying, no camera needed up to now. Regards Bernd - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. To unsubscribe, go to http://www.pdml.net and follow the directions. Re: Mega-lenses, not extinct...
You'll get used to the weight as quickly as you get spoiled by the bright image and faster focusing. The annoying part is that every time you pull out that lens, someone will say, With a lens that size, he's compensating for a lack somewhere else.. These are typically people who are impressed by a 28-200 zoom, and often remark, Whut a fancy-dancy camera! Never mind them, the lens is bright, sharp, and a pleasure to use. Flash meter
I'm new to the subject of studio flash. I have two strobes rated at 220 watt seconds each but they didn't really come with instructions for a novice such as myself. They mentioned a guide number of 165 and said for example that if the subject is 10 feet away then divide 165 by 10 to arrive at an f stop of 16.5. Simple enough. But I have two strobes. Surely that affects things. I have shot several rolls of film that have not produced any consistent results. Several questions: I assume I will need to buy a flash meter. Looking at these I see that you fire a test flash at the meter and it gives you an appropriate f stop which is great but what would be the shutter speed? The sync speed on my Pentax 645NII is 1/60 but how does the flash meter know that? And what if I used a different shutter speed? Any suggestions on a simple yet inexpensive flash meter? I see some of them cost more than many cameras! I have a Pentax 645NII. I need a hot shoe adaptor to connect to the strobes. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance for any help. RE: jammed me super and list question
Because you have already indicated you have pulled the mirror down, I am assuming you don't mind doing what I have done in the past. Keep in mind the shutter is fragile, and it could be damaged, but I have been able to do this a couple of times, without damage. I have purchased 2 ME Super's this way, and after GENTLY lifting the shutter from the back with my fingernail, they snapped back into place and have had no problems since. I'm sure that it would be best if they had been professionally CLA'ed, but seem to work for my needs. How bad is the vibration caused by the mirror of that camera? I unexpectedly got some extra money today that I'd like to use it to buy a second body (I've got a MX now). Also, I'd like to know how significant the difference between the viewfinders of these two cameras is (subjectively speaking - I know Super Program is 0.88 or something, and MX is 0.95). The sync speed on my Pentax 645NII is 1/60 but how does the flash meter know that? The flash meter doesn't care what the shutter speed is. All it meters is the flash output. Some of them can be set up to meter ambient in addition to the flash, but that is something that you don't really need to think about in the studio. And what if I used a different shutter speed? Re: Always at the ready - OT
Hi, Bernd, Funny, but for all the talk about an MX with 2.8 40mm pancake being pocketable (which I guess it is - in a big pocket), it's just not ~quite~ small enough for me. And, I want something cheap and dirty to throw in a bag or pocket for those times when I don't want to hang a camera around my neck; hence my choice of a little Minolta HiMatic F rangefinder. But your observation of the lack of Pentax product mentioned in this thread is well taken. I for one would have expected to see the Pentax 110 mentioned more than once - which it wasn't. Funny you should mention that your daily commute is boring and that there's nothing of interest to photograph. I find that having a camera with me makes me look at the world in a different way. I'm sure there are plenty of things for you to take pictures of each day. Of course, you'd run the risk of being that strange man who stands at the end of the train station platform with the camera, to all the other commuters! vbg I bet taking a camera with you would make your commute a bit more interesting. Re: Super Program vibration
Any things I should pay special attention to when buying a Super Program? Any suggestions of an alternative for that camera are also welcome (I'd go for a ME Super, but I'd like to have TTL flash). Things that I do not like: 1) coarse and dim screen, could be difficult to lock for sometimes (MX is much better) 2) very noisy mirror/shutter (slmost on par with LX?) 3) the worst Pentax 135 SLR body mirror/shutter vibration (MX the least?)? 4) sometimes difficult to see LCD inside the viewfinder 5) viewfinder LCD light too dim and the light button is difficult to press 6) push shutter speed buttons work slow for me, I prefer dial 7) shutter release self-timer switch require service/cleaning on many used bodies 8) 1/1000s shutter on the 1st two frames (so I cannot steal 2 frames at the begining of the roll) 9) Motor Drive A is very noisy although handling is good Don't get me wrong, I like Super A/program very much. It shakes pretty good. With a 400mm lens, the vibration caused pictures in my tests to be unacceptably unsharp due to vibration at speeds of 1/30 to 1/8 second with Manfrotto 055 and 028 tripods. A Zone VI wood tripod tamed it though. The Super Progam has a nice viewfinder, though it is a bit dim. The MX has a very nice finder. The Super Program is a pretty tough little sucker. The frame counter is prone to flaking out, other than that, I don't know of any major issues. I did the test with the longest lens I owned at the time. Vibration problems are quite dependant on focal length. Also, the problem really only seems to show up at speeds from 1/60 to about 1/4. Shorter than that seems OK, and slower than that also seems OK. The problem with the Manfrotto tripods is that the tubing rings. If you dampen the legs, the problem should be much less apparent. Even a bungee cord wrapped around all three legs at the top locks should fix most problems relating to shutter/mirror vibration. William Robb - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. I am looking for a good, clean, and razor sharp lens with an angle of view greater than 90(degrees) for some landscape work. It is very important that the distortions be minimal since there are a lot of angles and lines in the scene that will quickly reveal imperfections. Jason, Some wide angles are free of distortion, others are razor sharp. Since you insist on both, you help narrow the field: 20/4 Carl Zeiss Jena (77mm filter). Not as sharp as the later 20/2.8 (which shares the basic optical formula with the Pentax 20/2.8), but the 20/4 is probably more rectilinear than any othe 20. All but the last batch were single coated. And I'm araid none were K mount, just some M42s (and Practica bayonet). SMC Pentax 24/3.5K. As good as it gets in sharpness and rectilinearity, with SMC coating, too. SMC Pentax 24/2 FA. Perhaps not quite as distortion-free as the 24/3.5K, but it just may be sharper. And it's certainly faster! Even die-hard fans of manual focus succumb to its awesome optical quality. Finally, check out the new Sigma 20/1.8 and 24/1.8; I believe each takes a 77mm filter. They've been gaving great reviews, though don't expect the build quality and coating to be up to Pentax standards. Re: Super Program vibration
I've bought three Super Programs so I've always have two working. Now that I've acquired a KX and Ricoh XR-2s, I try to use my Super Program for TTL flash only (1/125 second). I was surprised at how much sharper my shots look at 1/15 to 1/100 second on the other two bodies. I think this holds true at all focal lengths, though it's difficult to say. Last month I gave one Super Program and my Rikenon 50/2 and 28-100/4 to my 24-year-old stepdaughter. I think the Ricoh XR-P (TTL) is a better choice. I bought one and broke it before I could take a single shot. But the shutter is much less vibration-prone, the finder is brighter, and the 45-degree split prism makes all the difference when shooting vertically. Re: k2 or kx or lx that is the question
I have both LX and K2 in my working collection. I have used the LX for about a year, and have just begun really using the K2. I find both to have their advantages. The K2 is compact, well built, and FEELS good in my hand. On the other hand my LX is bulky. I say this because I have it loaded down with the bulkier options . . . a Grip A, sports finder (which is useful for focusing with glasses on), and motordrive. If you don't need/forsee needing these options in the future, then there is no reason to pick up an LX, and a K2 would suffice. Just be aware that the K2's ASA setting ring and EV compensation can get a bit sticky to use. I've shot quite a bit of motorsports with the K 400/5.6 and find that that much focal length is needed at most races, even from the restricted photo areas.
