It's published by Focal Press I expect this will become one of the books added to my permanent bookshelf next to the computer desk. Very few books make it to that spot, so this is high praise. My previous best references for this type of work were a pair of books by Katrin Eismann, Restoration and Retouching and Masking and Compositing. I still highly value Eismann's books, but am finding Ctein much easier to read and in some areas much more complete. Where Eismann spends a few pages on scanning, Ctein devotes a full chapter to getting as much as possible out of the original before you ever get to photoshop. The editors at Focal press have made this book much easier to use by listing all of the How-to's in the front of the book. Throughout the book, the how-to's are called out with red labels in the margins. This is supplemented by a red rule in the margin denoting where the how-to begins and ends. Illustrations are excellent. I've been jumping around, reading particularly interesting sections of the book. The description of the curves function is about the best I've read anywhere. My guess is this would be a great book to start learning about retouching. For those that would like to go into more detail, Eismann's books would make a great follow up. Re: Disassembling a F135/2.8
Removal of yellowing from some Super Takumar lenses is often discussed on the Spotmatic Yahoo Group. Here's an extract from some info I copied some time ago. Doesn't help with fungus, though. Wrap the UNCAPPED lens in aluminum foil, all but the rear element. Put it on a windowsill in your house that gets full sunlight, tilted so the maximum sunlight enters the lens (it then bounces back off the foil at the front. The UV light from the sun is said to do the trick, eliminating the yellow in from two to six weeks. The maximum time was needed for some very old 50/1.4 Super-Takumar lenses; the minimum for my newest SMC Takumars with chequered rubber focus rings, and for an SMC Pentax 50/1.4 K-bayonet mount lens, the one with the 52mm filter thread. Re: K10D with AF540FGZ
Except that lack of TTL flash turns some of the not-so-old Pentax flashes (such as my 330 FTZ) into purely manual guns which are actually less useful than some of the really old guns (like the AF280T) which at least have an auto sensor in the gun. The 330 FTZ gives good results in TTL mode on my DS so Pentax must have improved the situation since the release of the D. Stan --- £7m cost of telling staff how to keep desks tidy By Paul Stokes Last Updated: 3:03am GMT 05/01/2007 Civil servants are being trained how to keep their desks tidy as part of a £7 million Government project described by one union as madness. Staff at one HM Revenue and Customs complex have had strips of black tape fixed to their desks to mark where items should be placed. The pilot study at the offices at Longbenton, Newcastle upon Tyne, is designed to improve efficiency by clearing clutter and keep computer keyboards, telephones and stationery in their optimum positions. It is included in a programme entitled Lean, introduced by consultants Unipart to improve the performance of public sector workers more used to dealing with red tape. HMRC would not disclose how much Unipart was being paid for its service but the Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS) yesterday claimed that the dictum to desk-users was part of a £7.4 million national project. One Longbenton worker said: Telling people where they should place their telephone is demeaning and demoralising. It's absurd that all this public money is being spent on this when staff are quite capable of deciding for themselves how their desks should be organised. The union has had reports of staff in one office being asked if a banana was active or inactive, meaning it had to be cleared from a desk unless it was going to be eaten immediately. Kevin McHugh, the PCS branch secretary, said some staff at Longbenton share the same desk, and have to rearrange their workspace, regardless of the tape. He said. This office has been open for 60 years and people have managed to find their pens and staplers without consultants helping them in that time. They are trying to turn people into robots but the whole thing falls down because in certain areas we have hot-desking where different shifts come in and use the same desks. If the person coming in after you has slightly shorter arms, then the markers will be in the wrong place. Marking the desk tends to get members upset sometimes when they've got personal photographs on their desks and they have to move them around. A HMRC spokesman explained it was only right that staff sharing desk space be given advice and support on how to make the most efficient use of the space. She said: It will also help to make sure everyone has what they need to do their job effectively and in turn support working relationships. Staff can still move the things on their desk to positions that suit them best. Lean is all about how we can work more efficiently to deliver an even better service to our customers. -- Multiple Business Insurance Quotes Compare multiple quotes for the best rates on business insurance. http://tags.bluebottle.com/fc/MhtYWUibrAfDBsVGtcvspmPfM3uqZnntvHcmc/ -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net

A street price of $100 or less for Lightroom would make me take notice. However, I'm finding Bibble Lite excellent also (I have an earlier free version which supports the DS - the current version sells for $70). It doesn't seem too dissimilar to Adobe Camera Raw in the way it works (not that I've used ACR but I have Bruce Fraser's book on it and the workflow he describes seems to be adaptable to Bibble). By the way, Fraser is a great loss - I received a copy of his book on image sharpening at Christmas and have learnt more about sharpening (and image processing generally) in the last two weeks than I had worked out in the previous 2-3 years. Re: advice for re-use of images
There's no right or wrong answer to this. I run a website on Australian flora for an Association that I belong to. The site has a gallery of several hundred images (some good, some pretty ordinary). Most of the images are mine but there are photos by others also. Like your site, all images belong to the original photographer and not the Association. I occasionally get requests for use of images for both online and print publications. My attitude is that, if the use is for a commercial venture then a fee should be payable to the photographer. For educational and no-profit organistaions I usually agree to an acknowledgement of both the photographer and the Association (provided the photographer in question is happy with that). How much to charge - difficult to say because some commercial publications are more commercial than others. I recently asked and got $85 per image for one-off, non-exclusive use in a print publication. This was for a well known publisher. However, another smaller publisher baulked at the thought of paying anything even though I was prepared to negotiate an affordable fee. A lot of authors seem to regard images as a afterthought and don't seem to budget any cost for them - a particularly irritating attitude, I think - if they intend to make money out of a publication it seems reasonable that the photographer should receive something as well). Getting back to your issue, I think I would be happy with an acknowledgement in this case and reimbursement of out-of-pocket costs. I'd try to negotiate that each image included a link back to the original wesite so that other potential publishers know where to come (and maybe they would be prepared to pay). Re: Olympian (a salesperson's story) (long)
No, not too long, John. And a good, informative story. I've always admired Olympus but I've been too heavily invested into Pentax to seriously consider making a change and I have always been a bit suspicious of the 4/3 system. I just can't see how it has much of a future given the small size of the sensor. Cheers Brian ++ Brian Walters Western Sydney Australia Quoting John Celio [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Godfrey wrote: I have several times nearly bought an Olympus E-1. It was the hottest contender next to Pentax when I was choosing what to buy in late 2004 When the E-1 first came out (fall 2003), I had been selling cameras for about a year. The Pentax *istD was coming out at the time, and I was trying to decide which I should get. I owned a Pentax ZX-30, plus a couple Sigma lenses, so it would be good to not have to buy extra lenses for the D. I also owned an Olympus C-3030, their first 3 megapixel PS camera. I loved it, and had become an Olympus digital fan at work. In the lead-up to the E-1's release, none of us thought much of the camera (aside from our boss, who had gotten to try one at PMA that year). It had only five megapixels, instead of the then-standard six in everyone else's cameras. I was disappointed that the camera only used Compact Flash memory instead of Olympus' new XD format, because of the bent pin problem I've mentioned in other threads. When we finally got the camera in the store, a few of my coworkers fell in love with it immediately. It was built like a tank (seriously. you should have seen how beat-up the Olympus tech rep's sample was, and it still functioned flawlessly), and the original lens lineup was fast and SHARP! We shot sample pics frequently and printed them at 12x18 (which was the largest size our Agfa printers could produce). The fact that it was the only camera at the time with dust-removal made it relatively simple to sell if the customer wasn't worried about price. Price. That was the downside, for my purchasing choice. The E-1 system was built for professionals, and I just couldn't swing that kind of cash. I got the *istD and the rest, as far as my Pentax obsession goes, is history. At first, my coworkers and I didn't sell many E-1s, because the price was something hard for customers to swallow. We were in an affluent area, but $2000+ (for just the camera and one lens) is hard to sell to most people. The Olympus rep, along with my boss, frequently told us that the E-1 was a great thing to sell, because lenses and accessories couldn't be found anywhere else, so people would come back to us for their next purchases. It made sense, but it didn't help very much. Then Olympus had a sales contest. First person to sell 20 E-1s would get a free outfit. Our best salesmen, who I'll call R and S, went into competition mode and started pushing the camera like crazy. Eventually, the contest was opened to anyone who sold 15 cameras, and then the rest of us started loving the E-1. Before you accuse us of something, I'd like to mention that every camera company offers sales incentives and contests from time to time. Olympus was desperately trying to get its brand-new camera out into the market, so they were a little more aggressive than other companies. Besides, we all loved the camera, and we never tried to push it on people who came in for something specific (like if they asked for a specific camera, instead of show me some digital SLRs). That would be unethical. So, we all loved the E-1. I sometimes wished I'd bought one instead of my D because of dust issues, but then I remembered Pentax's much smaller size backwards-compatibility and was content. By the end of the contest, half my coworkers were shooting E-1s, and I was THIS close to getting one for myself. I didn't make it, but I did manage to get myself a really nice pair of Olympus binoculars. Then the lower-end Evolt E-300 came out. Noisy as hell, with it's eight megapixels, and the kit lenses weren't nearly as good as the original E-1 lenses. Still, it was a popular camera, and the dust-removal feature was a Canon- and Nikon-killer for most soccer moms. Our rep kept saying an E-2 would be coming soon, but it never came. The E-500 showed up one day, and it became a big seller. I think its more conventional SLR look helped with that. I'm really not sure why they went back to the flat design for the E-330, but the live view thing seemed popular. Let's not mention the E-400. Anyway, enough rambling! The E-1 was a fantastic camera, but later models with higher resolutions have been plagued with bad noise problems. If you ask me, the reason the E-2 has been delayed so many times is because of the noise issue. The 4/3 sensor is just too dang small to handle the kind

As others have said there is no perfect bag. I have 3 (all Lowepro - not because they're any better than the others; two came with cameras I bought on Ebay and I kept them). For my basic walking around bag the Lowepro Nova 1 holds the DS with 16-45 zoom attached plus a 80-320 zoom and some accessories). That covers a good range of photographic possibilities. If I want a bit more, the Lowepro Nova 3 will fit another lens or two, a flash and maybe a point and shoot camera. Finally, I use the Lowepro Compu Daypack, which is the only one I specifically purchased. It's designed to carry a laptop computer in addition to camera gear, but I don't have a laptop and use that compartment for books, maps, documents etc). The bottom compartment fits the DS and a couple of extra lenses and the front compartment will take a long lens, a flash bracket with flash and cables already attached and accessories. The bag is by no means perfect but it's the best I've come across for carrying camera gear plus other non-photographic odds and ends. I have a Crumpler bag that is *almost* perfect. It's a sling-style bag, which I absolutely love. So much better than regular shoulder bags and backpacks. Re: OT: Web site review
Hi Nick The site is a bit spartan but there's nothing wrong with that if you want to keep things simple. A couple of suggestions: I think the pages would look better if there was more white space between the images and the text. There are several ways of doing this but if you're not using style sheets, probably the simplest here is to use an invisible 1 pixel x 1 pixel spacer gif (that can be resized to suit) next to the existing image. For example, on your main page replace img src=nickmug1.jpg align=right by: img src=nickmug1.jpg align=rightimg src=space.gif align=right width=20 height=459 You can change the width of space.gif to vary the amount of white space (the height parameter is the height of the main image) The space.gif image is easily created in most image editing programs but I can email you one if you want it. The other thing I would do is to try to exercise some control over the font used. It's difficult to really control this but one thing you could do is to insert a font style in head tags of each page. For example: head titleNick Wright Photography/title style type=text/css BODY { background-color: white; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 10pt } /style /head This will force a sans serif text unless a user specifically sets up their browser to over-ride the font. Cheers Brian ++ Brian Walters Western Sydney Australia Quoting Nick Wright [EMAIL PROTECTED]: I threw up a simple Web site, and I was wondering if you all would tell me what you thought of it. Re: Web site review part the second
I like this better but I still think you should specify a basic preferred font - I think the page looks better in a sans-serif font rather than the Times New Roman that is the default for most browsers. Also the links at the bottom might look better in a slightly smaller font and bolded. On each page I'd remove the link for the current page (eg. on the home page, leave 'Home' in the links row but take out its link). I'd also get rid of the underlines in the links but this requires specifying a style in either an internal or external style sheet. Good design would also indicate using alt attributes in the image descriptions. It would also be usual to specify summary attributes for tables but as your tables are used mainly for page layout, this is probably not so important here. Cheers Brian Quoting Nick Wright [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Okay, so you all thought my last one sucked. I was trying to go for something specific, and apparently I failed pretty big. So I was digging around and found the code for my site I did back in early 2003. I still liked the layout so I updated it and put it up instead. The the camera will set the apperture accordingly and furthermore adjsust it corresponding to the focusing distance. Quite clever.. The only draw back is that the slowest shutter speed is 1/30 sec's. Re: Cheapskate Challenge
Here's one I photographed last year on my annual holidays. Taken with the *istDS + 16-45 mm DA zoom, processed with Photoshop Elements 1 (which came bundled with my Epson 1650 scanner). http://picasaweb.google.com/supera1000/PESO/photo?authkey=X7kmHo_6wyc#5049387676421092210 http://tinyurl.com/3ayfqt I use Elements 1 for most of my image processing, in spite of its limitations (I'm too much of a cheapskate to shell out for something more sophisticated.) Cheers Brian ++ Brian Walters Western Sydney Australia Quoting Scott Loveless [EMAIL PROTECTED]: I've been thinking lately about the cost of doing photography and finishing photographs for web publication. A recent, erm, thread got me steamed up enough to post this. Basically, how much can you accomplish without spending any more money than it cost you to obtain your hardware? First some assumptions and then the rules. Assumptions: 1. You have access to a computer with an operating system installed and a connection to the Internet. Said computer is capable of running photo editing software and displaying the images on a screen. 2. You have access to a working digital camera or a scanner that you can connect to the computer. The rules: 1. You can use the software that came with your computer. Your computer probably came with an OS installed. If it didn't, whatever OS is currently installed is fine. OSX, Windows, Linux, whatever. From what I understand, the Mac has some basic photo editing software installed by default. Most Linux distros do, too. All of this is fine. 2. You can use the software that came with your camera or scanner. If you had to buy a third party application to get your scanner or camera to talk to your computer that's fine, too. 3. Since most of us like to print photos from time to time, you can use the software that came with your printer. In my case the Epson R320 came with Elements 2.0, so that's allowed. 4. You can use any freely available software, open source or otherwise. e.g. - Irfanview, Lightzone for Linux, Picasa, the GIMP, etc. Trial versions, software that watermarks your photos until you pay for the real thing, etc. are not allowed. You should be able to use the software indefinitely (and legally, so no warez) without having to shell out extra cash. To sum up, if it came with your hardware, is absolutely necessary for operating your hardware, or is freely available (no strings attached) it's allowed. Nothing else. Within these limitation try to produce something you're proud to call your own. When discussing digital (or digitally scanned) photographs with someone who's never done it before, you should be able to show them the photo and say something like All you need is your computer, your camera, and whatever software came with them. In an attempt to add some credibility to the challenge, I should state that I have submitted two photographs to the Pentax Gallery. One of them was accepted. I shot the photograph on a K100D, JPEG, and edited it with Picasa on a PC running Windows XP. It was a PESO a few weeks ago and can be seen here: http://picasaweb.google.com/sdloveless/PDMLPESO/photo#5035527265195980162 If you're interested in playing along, simply post a link to your photo(s) in a reply to this message, or mark it as a Cheapskate Challenge photo in a separate thread. Let us know what software you used to process/edit the photo. Compare it to the software you would normally use. If you're not interested, I won't be offended. If you think I need to revise the assumptions or rules please let me know. If you think this is a ridiculous waste of time I'd like to hear about that, too.
