have you used a program like tune up utilities? it might help to solve a
number of your issues.
I otfen have aps crashing on me for whatever reasons and tune up utilities
helps to solve most issues.

thanks, I now have stereo mix in the list.
my only problem here seems to be I cant tell if it's muted. the button next
to the device just says the name, such as stereo mix.
any ideas how I can get jaws to announce the status?

Don't run two anti virus programs together. it's recommended to uninstall
your current one before installing the new one.
regarding any anti spyware or malware, they don't effect the anti virus
programs at all. so you are ok to leave them alone.
