Re: [313] Detroit Techno Art
Alexander Calder pieces are amazing, especially the large mobiles. The stabiles have less of an effect of me but the way that the mobiles occupy space and are constantly in motion. However, the one artist doing it for me right now is the architect Frank O. Gehry who designed the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. The structures he creates have such flow and life to them and they reflect (in form) and play/interact with the surrounding environment. Check out the Guggenheim website: http://www.guggenheim-bilbao.es/ingles/edificio/el_edificio.htm Below is a copy of the description from said site. The building itself is an extraordinary combination of interconnecting shapes. Orthogonal blocks in limestone contrast with curved and bent forms covered in titanium. Glass curtain walls provide the building with the light and transparency it needs. Owing to their mathematical complexity, the sinuous stone, glass, and titanium curves were designed with the aid of computers. The glass walls were made and installed to protect the works of art from heat and radiation. The half-millimeter thick fish-scale titanium panels covering most of the building are guaranteed to last one hundred years. As a whole, Gehry's design creates a spectacular, eminently visible structure that has the presence of a huge sculpture set against the backdrop of the city. I've been inside some of his structures and they are wonderful. I'd love to live in a house designed by him. Which brings me to this: ARCHITETTURA mixed media installation (film+music+architecture) a caipirinha productions presentation a travelling architettura installation makes its way around the globe. it features four short films in between live soundscapes by caipirinha musicians. in addition, during the musicians performances, we project slides of contemporary architecture and design donated to us by the architects themselves. this exhibition takes the architettura multimedia project one step further in its investigation of contemporary architecture and electronic music. the 'architettura' installation can be found at museums, cultural centers, art galleries, architecture universities, and film and music centers around the world such as walker art center in minneapolis, the substation in singapore, the ny moma, artsonje in korea, the lux in portugal, and at the brooklyn anchorage. Re: [313] Detroit TechnoArt (Spaces)
Two spaces that come to immediate mind are the now defunkt Critical Space ... Critical hosted numorous young, talented Detroit artists -both experimental and traditional- and DJs. SK-1 (tad mullinex-SP?) had a residency there and so did Jerry Abstrakt. Though the nights were never packed, it was still a very cool place to hang out, hear music and see art and meet the artists. Ghost 2000 showed alot of work there as well, his art is incredible if you haven't seen it. Though the people who laid down the influence, those who continue it should be recognized and given the correct forum to do so. The space was also host to one or two parties for MotorMouthMagazine. Ohhh diana::. You make me weep. How I miss those days soo. The memory lives on when you go to the corner of winder and orleans. its all on the walls, the graffiti, the footsteps, the flyers, tristan getting held up by an AK-47, the girl getting her purse snatched, the many conversations that I had with the police to try and convince them nothing was going on... I think we helped detroit, but the revolution of experimentation needs to go on. perhaps its time to be reborn? ~signed ex critical creator ::create : recreate : alter::: ::.:::.:.:::..:..:::.::.:::.:.::..::.:.:..: visuals ~ experimental audio ~ toy - instrument expansion ...:::.:.:::.:.:::.:.:..:...:.:...:::.:.:...:.::.:.::.. ::synthetic - detroit ::detronik contact info:: t: 313.850.7345 e: [EMAIL PROTECTED] e: [EMAIL PROTECTED] w: www.mp3.com/detronik Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com

That may be the West Sound Circle event. It was released on CD and mixed in dolby surround sound. Had contributions from Async Sense, Sun Electric and Holy Language featuring Dr. Motte circa 1995, distributed by EFA. These are the liner notes: On December 8, 1995, the west sound circle was installed in the legendary e-werk in Berlin. This event marked a turning point in the evolution of the clubbing experience. Through the use of state of the art quadrophonic sound engineering, renowned DJs and live acts created for the first time ever a rare multidimensional landscape of sound. Highlights from th ewest sound circle have been remixed for this recording. All tracks are produced for hi-fi systems... Yada yada yada. Pretty cool CD, although my parents dolby surround didn't quite do it justice. I bet it would be sweet in a movie theatre or an equipped club. Rarest Detroit record: A Mike Clark white label. I know nothing about whether or not it got a real release. It has a track with an Another One Bites the Dust sample. That's about all I know about it. Quite good though. Favorite Detroit(ish) record: Clark - Lofthouse - Planet E Favorite Detroit(ish) track: Clark - Clip Least favorite record: The four Josh Wink sperm records I got promotionally, each with a one-sided four second spiral groove with a stupid noize on them. Waiting to find the right object to smash these on... How about this for a perfectly 313 oriented question: Favorite Mills track? Or has this already been asked? Or is everyone tired of talking about Mills? How about we call The Bells off limits, just for arguments sake. Re: [313] Re: UR Vote
This happens too often when I go down to Leeds on a Saturday. Some of the guys in there listen to the same tracks again and again!! I waited for half an hour before a turntable was free... I spose you don't think about anyone else tho once you put those headphones on... record stores are another world... Aww, a whole 1/2 hour? :) When I go record shopping, I spend 4 or 5 or 6 hours listening to records - I love my music, and want to be sure not to miss out on anything. I've listened to tracks more than once many times, because so many times in the past i've missed out on fantastic records due to perfunctory listens. It's up to the store to provide more than one turntable, that's just ridiculous. Some of the best records don't reveal themselves on the first listen - for me (although I'm a bit weird like that), the Isolee 'Rest' album sounded bad on the first 3 listens, ok on the next 8 or 10 listens, and now I absolutely love it. Does anyone else ever get this? Deepness needs waiting. Dave massive pile of vinyl, who listens to every single second of all the tracks and ends up buying one record. That is annoying, I'll admit. Some records I just flick through, when it's fairly obvious what sort of style they are. __ Do You Yahoo!? Talk to your friends online with Yahoo! Messenger. http://im.yahoo.com
Re: [313] carl craig at cranbrook
Hello, This idea goes back a lot further, you would have to look into academic electronic circles for the beginning of concept. Off hand, Edgard Varese and Stockhausen both employed this concept in their installation work in the 1950's. I am sure there were other using this concept in their installation work during the early days of tape music. I would imagine poly-channel sound goes back even further than the 1950's. I have a collection of academic electronic music history books from the late 60's/early 70's, I will have a look through them tomorrow afternoon for more info. Anything people are doing now in digital media is simply a technological refinement of concepts people were carrying at least half a century ago. Club Planet ( http://www.clubplanet.com ) has now posted part two of the DEMF article we wrote. We also have posted the article, with a complete set of pictures, on our personal web page at htttp://members.home.net/tydesign7. Club Planet offered us an excellent opportunity to cover the event, but due to space constraints (re: download times) not all the photos we intended to go with the article could be included. That's why we have decided to included them on our site. We would like to thank Club Planet and encourage you to visit either locations. We will be including a DEMF photo page in the near future on our site, taken by us as well as others who have offered their submissions. We wrote the article with our beloved city and music in mind and hoped that we captured that Detroit flavor. Respect to tha' Big D! As always, we welcome any feedback. Furthermore, thank you to all the organizers, vendors, performers, and fans that made the DEMF an unforgettable, dearly cherished and loved memory for us. We look forward to what the future holds. Re: [313] Detroit Techno Art (Douglas)
Hey, I wish I'd seen this Stan Douglas exhibit. Those interested in a brief _Metro Times_ article and a smattering of photographs should go to: http://209.69.221.136/20/15/Features/artDire.htm. For a brief piece on Carl Craig's role, see Andrew Duke's http://techno.ca/cognition/npeoct29.htm. Does anyone know if there's still a way to see Douglas' photos and film? Thanks, Carissa, for mentioning this. dms This past fall a photographer named Stan Douglas had an exhibit at the Art Gallery of Windsor entitled Le Detroit. It was basically a retrospective of famous and not-so-famous ruins and abandoned buildings in Detroit. The photographs were accompanied by a short black and white film taken in the old train station, with a soundtrack done by Carl Craig...definitely made me a bit misty-eyed. Interestingly, it also coincided with a small exhibit of artwork by Matthew Hawtin - very simple pieces of single colours and symmetrical lines, but the square canvases were warped into odd shapes. Like alot of the music Matthew (and sometimes his brother) plays, simple yet somehow just bit off...in a good way, of course. Did anyone else in the Windsor/Detroit area see these? Hello, I don't know who mentioned the state sanctioning of Malevich by the Russian propagandists but I think that Constructivism is most directly relatable to Techno. Artists like Malevich, Rodchenko, Lissitzky and Gontcharova(Rodchenko's wife) were multi-media artists and graphic designers who were very minimal and direct in their art. Isn't that what techno is about? Constucting direct music with minimal means. I saw huge exhibits of Rodchenko and Bonnard at the MOMA and Rothko at The Whitney in the same day in NYC 2 years ago!! My favorite Jeff Mills track is the Extremist on Tresor Records(Tresor #51 ?) I think it is the original version that is my favorite, though I have not played it in a while. Roger --
Detroit Records
As far as rare records I own, I have an old Blake Baxter record on Incognito records from about 1989. I also have a Chesire #2 record, for all the people around Detroit who know what Chesire was. I saw a blue vinyl Chesire #? at the store once but didnt pick it up. Also Jeff Mills 9A and 9B but around here they are not that rare. I have an accelerate #001 record that I was it was rare but am not sure. I also have a 1 sided Probe record, track X or something. I dont know how rare these are but I dont think they are exactly stellar records song wise. As far as records that I am into now, I really like the USER, ABUSER stuff. Roger --

Re: [313] Good Thread!!
Now you made me jealous. I have World of Echo (this might be my favourite record ever) and last year found an apparently repressed copy of 24-7 Music but I've been looking for Indian Ocean forever without success. Wasn't this released on Rough Trade too? Is anybody here familiar with Russel's serious work? I've heard there's an album on Chatham Square (Tower of Meaning?) and an lp called Instrumentals on Les Disques du Crépuscule. Anyone interested in discussing records you know you will never find but are sure you would love? Message-Id: [EMAIL PROTECTED] I'm not sure what would be the rarest record(s) in my collection, but I was pretty pleased with myself when I picked up Arthur Russel's World of Echo LP and a sealed mint copy of Indian Ocean's Schoolbell/Treehouse 12 on Sleeping Bag, both for a mere $5 au. :) chris

Which version of Media Player? I tried it and all it does is skip back a half second or so Matt E-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Homepage: http://magicmattkelly.tripod.com I know it is a bit OT, but since there are some DJs on the list... I have just discovered that when you're listening to MP3s using the Windows Media Player, you can use any scrollbar to scratch on the song, like you would do on a vinyl... RE: [313] Good Thread!!
Is anybody here familiar with Russel's serious work? It's not quite serious work, but there's a compilation on Polygram called Another Thought that's still in print. It's not really classical *or* electronic, closer to pop than anything else, but still so screwed up that most anyone can get into it. I think it was compiled from tapes he left after his death... .John.
new monolake
a new monolake record has just been released... it's on their ml/i label, mli-005. i think the track titles ice / stratosphere describe the music very well. typical monolake programming, clear sounds, quite spacey. oh, and it comes on clear vinyl :) brilliant release, highly recommended. there is some info and real audio clips on the monolake web site http://www.monolake.de/stratosfer.html ines http://www.circonium.de
Re: [313] Detroit Grand Trance-Bahs
If you wouldn't call trance records trance that says more about you and your knowledge of dance music than anything else. He did cross over into some hard tech but a good portion of his set was T-R-A-N-C-E. I would never call paris's set trance. Cyclone Wehner wrote: Are you sure? He is into a lot of European techno stuff; Hell's label, etc. Maybe he was being satrical of it? I really enjoyed Paris the Black Fools trance set this evening at the Temple in Ferndale, MI (a little 'burb of Detroit). Yes, Trance. Of the hard variety. BT Basher Mix CD Release
Hey, I've just finished listening to the latest mix CD from BT Basher (Rotate, Windsor)and have got to say that it is wicked! Very nice minimal, funky and just flat out raw. For those of you on the Brinkman/Basic Channel vibe this CD is right up your alley. The CD release party was last night at the Amsterdam Lounge (in Windsor). CD's are available at the Amsterdam and potentially directly from him. [EMAIL PROTECTED] . tm Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com

rotator?
anybody know whatever happened to dj rotator - the wacky detroit experimental jungle dj- havent seen his name anywhere in at least a year- but before that he was doin crazy dj stunts when he was playing out.. -p
Re: [313] rotator?
He had some pretty severe perosnal problems. I don't know if he's okay or not. He played at a party I threw in, uh, I believe 1996. It was also one of the early appearances of a Mr. Derek Plaslaiko, if I'm not mistaken. the appeals of repetition...
I am presently working on some psych-socio theory on repetition in music and why its an attractor to some, and an utter bore to others. I was wondering if there is already some theory, be it music theory and/or psycho-social theory, in which asks and solves this question... What I am avoiding is the usual answer of its in your heart..., ect. I feel that there is a more concrete explination to this appeal, we as arttists tend to be dramatic and vague, i wish to define... I wont get into it now, but I am working on a approach that deals with personality typing (introversion/extroversion, ect.)... this is research for possible academic publication... thank you, darw_n [EMAIL PROTECTED] www.sphereproductions.com www.mannequinodd.com Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com
Re: [313] the appeals of repetition...
Can you tie it in with trance states induced by music in such religions as Voodoo or with Native American dance and shamanism? Also look at societies such as the South Pacific Islands and the similarities in the tribal techno music from Sweden (the drumming rhythms are freaky similar). I don't know if there are any similarities in the communities in those societies and those within the electronic music realm. (I think there is but don't know what it is...need for tribalistic association? Though I doubt that that would draw people specifically to repetative music because there's groups like this who used to follow the Grateful Dead and their music wasn't exactly repetative.)
