The consensus a few months ago was that both terms exist, and maybe more
than that. Truth is, nobody knows what it is, and everyone thinks they do. I
think it's Relief vs. Cajual, for instance. Think Lester Fitzpatrick of
faster Paul Johnson without the ghetto samples. My favorite hard house song
as I understand the term is DJ Elin's Mad Cow. It's kinda like saying hard
techno to someone, but probably even more confusing. It could mean a lot of
things depending on where you are and what you know. Hard House is
definitely confusing though... when in doubt, remember, it's just a label.
When that label becomes so confusing that there is no consensus on what it
means, you may want to chose another way to describe what you're talking
about, or qualify what you're saying.

[313] Surgeon tone-shifting

2000-10-04 Thread Cesium5Hz
In a message dated 28/09/00 4:01:55 [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

Remember in Modulations, when I think Saunderson said that techno was the
only way out, the only escape of such a desolate city? Well, everyone
usually feels trapped somehow in some manner (if not, your probably an
artist!! LOL!!), and techno was created to alleviate that feeling of being
  ultimately controlled...

I also think that tonshifts have something to do with tribalism, and the
creation of very mystical moments, for the repetition of the tribal dance
sounds strange and powerful to them, and being primitive, their only option
is a God who creates these magical sounds...

I believe this tone-shift theory is just another way of interpreting the
interaction between ecstasy and repetitive music - the actual 'trance' that
techno music embodies itself through its tribal origins. This 'mystical
experience' whether or not through extraneous assistance is central to the
mind releasing itself into the 'singularity' that can be translated into this
'vibe' that is talked about.

Personally I have felt this through the process of extensive listening to
minimal techno music. The essence is within the rhythm, the key is in the
dance - Its liberating and often addictive. That's why we love the music and
this dance that transcends our perception.

On the stage that he was playing on, he had a pretty darn

I used to play some hard house in 04-95. I referred to it as NY Hard house
because every producer was from there. Old DJ Duke, Van Helton. I also
considered old Laid Bake Luke and crew to fit in there...

You know, really really basic boring house with a distorted kick drum, but a
little different than all this tracky crap coming out now...

2000-10-04 Thread Nick Walsh
Hard house used to be kind of underground house meets
techno meets progressive and yes very dark. For an
example of what Hard House used to be, check Flying
Rhino records and artists like Venom and Bus.

However, hard house has recently become a word used
for what was previously known as NuNRG 'cept it's
slightly more commercial (Nukleuz Records). This is
one of the reasons why I stopped playing goa and hard
house. I was only really looking for detroit anyway,
but I want to try everything at least once:)

I once saw this list called you know your a raver

listed 101 reasons you could tell your a raver.
 Well, some people might be
offended to be called ravers, I for one dont
 generally call myself one, but
for some of these reasons you could easily replace
 raver with techno freak
or something along those lines. Anyway, amongst
 others, there was one that
said you know you're a raver/techno freak when you
 find yourself nodding
your head to the tribal sounds of a washing
 machine. Maybe this isn't
toneshifting as discussed on the list, but its
definately a case of a bored
mind projecting music onto something which isn't
 necessarily musical, and I
find it to be quite true. Sort of like working in
 factory's, many times have
I considered taking my MD recorder to work with me
 to try and capture the
seemingly musical hum and machine noise that is the
 background noise of a
 busy factory.

For those interesed in hearing Shawn's new record. Go to www.wrct.org between
7pm and 9pm (EST), on thursday night. The radio show is called the space groove
with DJ Plastique. I'll be down for the show, so I'll drop every single cut
off of the record. My personal favorite on this release is Pixie's groove.

Or if you are in the pittsburgh area. You can come to Groove on Friday night.
Where it will be Shawn Rudiman Vs. Jwan, we will be performing a live pa/dj
set. This is going to sound bad but I have no idea who else is playing that
night with us. But if yo can't stand Shawn or myself;) Kenny Glasgow is in town
on friday night as well. Friday will be a good night for techno here in
Pittsburgh.

For those people that I promised I love Techno (bumperstickers/flyers)
(merrick, dj oracle, andrew, etc). I'm sending them out as quickly as possible.
Keep and eye out for them at bent crayon, record time, and sonic groove. Grab
them quick because we didn't print to many, and they have been going like
hotcakes around here. People have actually had them stolen off their cars!

Yes i just picked this one up the other day as well. Eleven
tracks of mellow electronic loungy jazz that sounds like a
cross between early Jimi Tenor and electronic-trumpetist
Ben Neill with somewhat darker undertones.

Regarding Jeremy Downer, he has been performing/recordnig
in Australia for the last five years or so under the guise
Tetrphnm. Supposedly he's rather big in the Melbourn
electronic scene or so i've read...

Here are the releases infos:

. Jeremy Dower: sentimental dance music for couples cd (Plug Research 025)
 Tracks:
 - would you like to dance
 - should i trust my heart?
 - the young and the restless
 - i'm coming to get you
 - i don't want to leave
 - the way i should feel
 - now look what you've done
 - diagram showing the path of the bubbles from a sparkling drink
 - it's funny because it's true
 - for keeps

Also watch out for the Plug Researcg 10 Split series which will be
available soon. Here are the three that i've heard so far - all of which
are excellent!

Detroit Escalator Co Ibex releases...

2000-10-04 Thread Lance @ Inaudible
After almost a five year absense, Neil Ollivierra has returned
with a release of sublime detroit emotion. The first is a
double 10 on Peacefrog called Black Buildings which features
seven tracks of devine melodic string-laiden detroit ambience
and electronica including his track that appeared on last year's
Time:Space Transmat compilation. I cant say enough good
things about this new DEC release because for me, the sounds
represented on this release typify what I love about detroit
techno. Definitely a contender for my tops of 2k.

A full length DEC cd is forthcoming on Peacefrog and is said
to contain several of the tracks from the above release plus some
of the better tracks from his epic Soundtrack 313 album from
years ago on Ferox. So for those who missed Soundtrack 313
the first time around, you'll have your chance again soon

The second Ollivierra-related release is a 3-track 12 on Planet
E under the guise Ibex. But Ibex is by Tony Ollivierra not Neil.
This 12, which features three tracks, has the same soulful
emotion as the DEC releases but adds more of a jazzy house/
disco flavor that Planet E has been so good at recently.

Here are the release infos on both...

. Detroit Escalator Company: black buildings 2x10 (Peacefrog)
 Tracks:
 - the inverted man [dreaming]
 - float
 - plumb
 - sistrum
 - scram
 - duat
 - nebulae

Also...

. Ibex: oasis 12 (Planet E)
 Tracks:
 - Oasis
 - Bok Choy
 - Oasis (Dub)

soundcard purchase advice needed

2000-10-04 Thread Andrew Duke
(apologies for the cross-posting;
please reply privately so as to not
further clog up the lists)
I've been making do with the basic
soundcard that came with my PC:
Soundblaster 16 since I got it. But
now that I'm getting back into recording
my own music again (and making the
computer part of that process), I want
to get a better soundcard. My problem is
that I am about as ignorant as they come
when it comes to technology, so I have no
idea what I should be looking for. I'm not
looking for a better soundcard for gameplaying
(I don't play games), just music making.
My biggest concern is that with my current
soundcard, I have to record from the soundcard's
lineout to the linein on my DAT, and then viceversa
to get the sound back into the soundcard (ie if I want
to tweak I have to do this). I'd like to be able to
jam live and *record these jams as I'm jamming*
all using the same soundcard (ie keep everthing in
the soundcard from start to finish and not have to
export to DAT and then import back into the soundcard).
Is this possible? (seriously, if you're thinking this Duke's
pretty stupid, I have no problem with that; I barely passed
sciences and maths in school).
The computer stores I've talked to
said it wouldn't be practical with my system to just
buy a second soundcard and bounce audio from
soundcard #1 to soundcard #2. They're used to
people who want new soundcards for better gaming-related
audio, not people like myself who want better soundcards
re: musicmaking.
Soundblaster Platinum 5.1's infopage
http://www.creativelabs.com/sound/live-platinum-51
has all kinds of gobbledygook that makes not much sense
to me: like: does full digital mixer maintains all sound
mixing in the digital domain, eliminating noise from the signal
mean I can record my jams as I play them (for further
editing) all within the same soundcard?! And most of
these soundcards come with all kinds of games, effects,
etc, etc, etc, that I'm not interested in (but it looks like
the higher up in quality you go, the more stuff they add

Along with the Nubian Mindz album (New World Chaos), this is one of the
year's greats for the opening 3 tracks alone. Many of the things on

Promoters sue Highland Park over alleged dance party brutality
by Melissa Giannini

When one thinks of police brutality or racial profiling, white kids from the
suburbs don't usually come to mind. But attorney Carl L. Collins III will
argue that, in the case of at least one May 6-7 party that took place in
Highland Park, police sought out people who appeared to be young
suburbanites, harassed them, arrested them falsely and brutally abused them
for participating in what police thought was a rave. Collins announced
Tuesday, on behalf of Detroit Underground Productions, Inc. and six other
individuals, two multimillion-dollar lawsuits against the Highland Park city
government and police department, citing civil rights violations, racial
discrimination, racial profiling, police trespassing, false arrest, slander,
defamation of character, illegal forfeiture of funds and other charges.

In the case of the party in question, Collins said that promoters met with
the mayor and were granted approval to host the party. The night of the
event, police raided it. According to Collins, a few people were the victims
of extreme physical abuse, property was taken and many were arrested. All of
the charges were dropped afterward, except for one individual, a minor, who
pleaded guilty after being offered a reduced charge. Videotape exists from
the night of the party showing the alleged brutality. Rarely has legal
action taken place to defend dance culture and Collins says that this form
of harassment and profiling has for the most part gone unnoticed.

Right To Dance, an organization formed because of violent raids over the
past year in Detroit, staged a protest rally Tuesday at 5 p.m. at Detroit
City Hall in front of the Spirit of Detroit statue. When any story hits the
news, it brings to light, yeah, your son or daughter might have been there,
but your son or daughter might have also gotten a Maglite upside the head,
says Carl Smith of Right To Dance. The organization is protesting the
violence, but Smith says he'd like to work with the government and police to
create a safer scene as has happened in Toronto, where the city officials
drafted laws that were acceptable to both sides of the issue.

More to come.

RE: [313] hard house?

2000-10-04 Thread Jason Birchmeier
This may be weird irony, but I was just thinking about this very topic after
seeing some headline on the cover of some UK mag and now as I tread through
the new Tall Paul mix (it's for work, not pleasure...)

For example, all the Timo Maas remixes of Green Velvet's Flash have been
getting tons of play on all the new progressive house/trance mixes that have
come out the past few months (Tall Paul, Dave Ralph, Scott Henry,
Gatecrasher, Deep Dish, etc). The original version of Flash fits my
original schema of hard house as we define it here in America. Yet these
Timo Maas remixes seem to be ultra-trendy with all the progressive
house/trance DJs; they have all the gloss and tweaking of trance but without
the synths or breakdowns.

I can't define what is and what isn't hard house, since it's an ambiguous
term, but I do believe that a lot of these trance guys are coming to their
senses a bit and getting tired of all the formulaic trance that has flooded
the market for the past 2-3 years. I think a lot of them are turning to
what's being called hard house because it doesn't have as much of the
clichéd (aka cheese) stuff that makes so many people dis trance. In other
words, it's a safer sound, a sort of compromise between trance and
Relief-style hard house.

SO, i'm thinking about writing my dissertation on the topic cuz it really

most of the literature (books, articles) dealing with electronic music i've

Ahhh, don't forget LA-based Matt Johnson, and also DJ Trajic and Alex Peace.
:) I don't know if tha D ever took to the hard house sound much at all, but
not so long ago it was really big in Chicago. I don't hear much new hard
house coming out anymore, although from what I've seen, what's left of it
seems to be coming out of LA/SoCal, so I'm guessing it still must remain
fairly popular our there.

I'll agree with whoever it was (earlier in this thread) that pointed out
that you can identify hard house by what basically consists of a
housy-looped track and a deep distorted bass beat. I don't find that hard
house contains much of the melodies or ambience you'll find built into
techno, but many of the songs from both genres blend in together well.
Unfortuantely, I think the mostly loopy/repetitive nature of hard house
tends to burn most people out on it after a while. The better DJ's that
spin it will mix into a track and then get right back out of it and into
another, it's not something you'd want to listen to over and over again for
7 or 8 straight minutes. Even though it doesn't seem to be as popular
anymore, it's not dead... I spoke with Alex Peace a while back and he said
that he and Bam Bam (Eric Cea) were trying to take it in the direction of
a more minimal sound... I haven't really heard anything that might be
considered the result of this yet, but time will tell I suppose.

This may be weird irony, but I was just thinking about this very topic
after seeing some headline on the cover of some UK mag and now as I tread
through the new Tall Paul mix (it's for work, not pleasure...)

Suuure. keep on telling yourself that! ;)

I can't define what is and what isn't hard house, since it's an ambiguous
term, but I do believe that a lot of these trance guys are coming to
their
senses a bit and getting tired of all the formulaic trance that has
flooded
the market for the past 2-3 years. I think a lot of them are turning to
what's being called hard house because it doesn't have as much of the
clichéd (aka cheese) stuff that makes so many people dis trance. In
other
words, it's a safer sound, a sort of compromise between trance and
 Relief-style hard house.

First, please do not insult one of my favorite labels by
comparing it to trance music in the UK. Second, it doesn't
matter what horrible music those DJ's hide under.
Bad music is bad music, you can't hide from that fact, jak!

 Peace,

 Kyeo
