Re: [313] New drexciya // Info Needed

2002-02-01 Thread Nocturnals
Hi all,

New Drexciya album "Harnessed the Storm" LP out on Tresor, I believe released
this past Tuesday January 29th. Definitely grab yourself a copy...and then,
there is the 12" Rob mentioned, which is also on Tresor.

And while where on the Drexciyan tip, you could also check out The Other
People Place LP "Lifestyles of the Laptop Cafe" on Warp and Transllusion "The
Opening of the Cerebral Gate" on Supremat. All stuff rumored to be Drexciya,
or at least have some of the members involved.

Hope this helps.

Musically,
Kered

I was subbed to this list for years but just re-subbed two days ago after an

spasmodically.. Releases to date: erm, none, but imminent. I've met a few
313'ers over the years, Tom Churchill hooked me up when I first came to
London.. bless 'im.. I remember the UR party as a big 313 knees up but have
lost touch with pretty much everyone, so hello to those who know me. I do a
monthly show on GaiaLive and promote a couple of underground parties (Triology,

The company was founded, among others, by the Berlin-based computer music
project Monolake in fall 1999. Since their beginning in 1995, Monolake have
always written their own programs to realize their vision of sound and

not write it. I don't know myself though, maybe he
helped develop it the way Richie helped with Final

shipping on your quote, so we'll eat it." I'm more than willing to put up
with the long lines for help, and a myriad of four year old children banging
on synths to get those kind of deals..I think that store hasn't turned a
proffit in three years because of me!

[313] Si Begg - Commuter World

2002-02-01 Thread Michael . Elliot-Knight
Anyone know if this is available on vinyl? I've been listening to it (CD)
and although most of it is Begg's noodle work (that is a complement in this
case) the last three tracks in particular I would love to have for spinning
(in my living room for my audience of two cats and a wife)... The tracks
I'm talking about are "Living in Suburbia", "Living in Suburbia pt 2" and
"So Many People, So Little Noise". The last of which could have fit right
into the Blade Runner soundtrack without a hiccup. The first two are
electro tech for abandoned neighborhoods.

By the way - does anyone know who distributes Elektrolux records in the US
and how to get on their mailing list for review purposes?

[313]How much Guitar Center Rocks

2002-02-01 Thread FC3 Richards
I went into GC earlyier this year to get replacement needles for my
DiscMaster cartriges. he said they were $15 or something while the whole
Cartrige w/needle included was $39.99...He tried and tried to talk me into
getting the cartriges for that price and i said "No way dude"
To make a long dialogue filled story short, he ended up selling me 3
cartriges for $20.00 a piece. half friggen price. The salesmen get paid a
certain amount of comission on each individual item they sell. So if they
can get more comission on an item by cutting the price in half, then they
are more then willing to. I like that one alot.

2002-02-01 Thread Dennis Donohue

---I didn't realize that so many people had moved lately...

I'm a Johnny-come-lately on this.

Name: Dennis Donohue
Age: 24
Location: Born in Wayne, MI - lived in and around the area until after
college. Now residing in Chicago, though my wife and I are looking to find
a house in the Southfield area.
Occupation: I'm a Network Administrator for a medium sized corporation with
World offices. I've recently been certified as a CCNA.
Music: Where to start. I attended many parties in Detroit as a high school
student (can you say "packard plant" ;) which led to my involvement and
interest in the music. I spin records and produce my own inspired
music. (PLUG! www.mp313.com)
Favorites: Rob "noise" hood, Scan 7, Carola, Sims.
Technotourism: Much the opposite of most of the listmembers, I've had the
pleasure of seeing most of the reknown DJs in Detroit - so my wife and I
travel abroad to see them. Going on three years of ILT, and many
many, overseas technotourists have helped us (read: John O., Otto, JC,
ect.). Played host to several parties of 313ers in Chicago - which is the
best thing about this list!
Known as: Rob Hood Stalker. If I'm in the Netherlands, than Rob Hood can't
be far behind ;)

get a chance to she him I suggest it. he has had a different show both times
I saw him first time was more housy (c2 or laurent style) and the second was
old skool electro style.

list members I have met:
tim j, ryan b, christian b, and the guy who work at melodies and memories
(thanks for the mad-net.de suggestions they rip), and some dude i meet at
the demf from asia somewhere sorry forget your name (hope you liked the

i really seem to met more past list members, then present members. hmmm

[313] the members....

2002-02-01 Thread alex.bond
Memo from Alex Bond of PricewaterhouseCoopers

 Start of message text

Right, I sort of held back from doing this, but I'm going to jump on the
bandwagon.

Alex Bond

Age - 27

Live - in Manchester

Work - Shit office job (pay those bills)

Music - Soul, Jazz, Funk, Disco, House, Techno, Leftfield tackle, early
electronica. Black dancefloor music (Cringe)

313 list - 3 weeks!!

Got into Techno - Heard a compilation on Network - 'Biorhythms' inc.
Model500 'Infoworld', RhythimisRhythim 'Emanon' in '91/92, nearly fell on
my arse as a young lad I could not quite believe that shit.

Music related stuff - 1995-1999, Ran a night and a club in Manchester.
Founded the Music Box. Did a night called 'The Womb', 1st party Juan Atkins
spun, last night Robert Hood. 'The Womb' had to stop due to the IRA blowing
up our premises. Moved into the basement of a club called 'Rockworld'.
Painted the club, scrubbed it, got a soundsystem in it, called it ' The
Music Box'. Started a night called 'Drama'. Darryl Wynn spun on the first
night due to Ron Trent cancelling, many more played. Stopped night due to
lack of interest and our lack of funds (my rent, bills weren't getting paid
+ I lost my marbles!). Last big party I did was with Frankie Valentine, DIY
and the boys from Rainy City Music in '99.

Lost interest in Music (not completely) but I had to sell ALL my records to
pay the rent, all the classics, Boy did Vinyl Exchange do well out of me.
That fucked my head up a bit, and I had to leave it for a while. Been
buying records again since start of 2001, obsessively. Got my passion back
for Music completely now, looking after a producer in Manchester, getting a
record pressed up soon, before Summer, playing some records at a party on
Saturday night. We have a good crew here, 30 strong, all Detroit heads - we
throw little parties in Mad Northern working mens clubs. Happy again!!

Never been to Detroit, me and a friend were thinking of going to this years
DEMF. Lived in LA for 5 months when I was about 18 though - Wild times!!

Rant/Essay over - sorry if I bored anybody.

[313] MUSIC? THEO !

2002-02-01 Thread Kent williams
About music -- new Theo Parrish -- was playing in the store yesterday
"Dirty Rhodes" track -- does it get any better than this? Brilliant
minimal jazzy deep house... on the one hand very loopy, on the other
constantly changing up in subtle ways, and throughout rubbing your
ears with that slightly distorted gritty Rhodes -- like double ought
sandpaper buffing your brain to a shine...

the records I mentioned are some "313-techno to house"-basic-records

so the posting was also about "techno"

what do you want to chat about ?

[313] RE: Shady Promoters and Carl Craig ... (no association whatsoever intended)

2002-02-01 Thread Jones, George
The incident I stumbled onto is probably pretty similar to others. There was
a guy in my old apt building that crowned himself a promoter. He got a night
lined up at the bar down the block from us and needed to stir up some
publicity for the night so he lied about having Carl Craig booked. He got
caught up (and almost got his a_s kicked) after I had it confirmed that Carl
WASN'T booked.

I've heard a number of stories about big name DJ's falsely advertised at a
venue just to get publicity.

Ah well, maybe some-one can therefore shed a bit of light on this one.
My m8s & I were all looking forward to hearing Carl at Turnmills last
Saturday night until we saw in the weeks before that he was no longer listed
or on the flyer. The day before an e-flyer was sent to one girl saying he
was playing but when she queried it with turnmills they did admit he wasnt
playing. I've had countless nights when the listed DJ never turned up at
Turnmills for their Headstart, including once to see Dave Clarke last year
(alas not Dave Clark of this board fame - sorry to have confused u ) who not
only didnt show, but didnt have any mention of turnmills on his own site's
booking page. This was his booking after he failed to show when on the
night he wasalso booked to play Atomic Jam. Some 3 or 4 months after he
hadn't shown either ... or maybe he just wasnt booked.

It's true for me (for small/new companies). I had the
choice between using a cracked copy of FMHeaven or
paying $70 for it, and I decided to pay for it because
the developer is just one individual who was extremely
helpful and courteous while I was testing the demo.
Although I have been guilty (like most) of using
cracked copies from big companies. If I love a
particular program I wind up eventually buying it.

[313] Music

2002-02-01 Thread neontsetse
brian wilson and the beach boys, beatless, kraftwerk etc...

big music with an own signature in sound, composition, artistic meaning -

done by some special muscians and there are many more out there

yes artists of all colours - would never deny that -

but still they also live and lived in the context

of what´s been around them and b4 -

(by the way, I love some classic-music-kind too -

up to debussy putting in oriental influences in his music) ...

but - still I believe, when we talk about the subject Detroit-techno

we need to talk about the individual artists but also some collective

phenomenans and as much is about the communication with beats

the talking drums - this - was not the european culture 4 a long time

(the real tribal music there got almost lost and mutated to a nothing)

Then as some detroit art is directly about "ebonics" "blackness" "black
mahagony"

up to "underground resistance" in the context of the world as it is -

this is in the story-line of black music, because the shit don´t stop till
now

almost not to talk about it, when you talk about it, is more then ignorant
...

A Guy Called Gerald

meantioned yesterday - his statement about what happens to detroit techno

"they take it, fake it and break it" - guess what he meant by that ...

ps -

anyone checking the debate on KDJ on deephouse ?

Produce: I live in hope, maybe now I'm employed again I can splash out on a

313:couple of years

Born and raised in Liverpool though my ma's from Boston, MA (dad from Crosby
if you were wondering). So visited the US a few times, though never Detroit.
Spent the past few years between Newcastle, Leeds, Manchester and Liverpool.
Recently moved to London -the relentless cynicism suits me but the North is
more fun. Listen to most types of music, lots of records, that kind of
thing. Despite finding it culturally interesting as, perhaps, the most
mature indigenous black british music, I think UK garage is a bit shite.

so, now you know... feel kind of exposed now...

[313] Shady Promoters and Carl Craig ... (no association whatsoever intended)

2002-02-01 Thread Michael D Tyrer

Heh,

I called my local guitar center, and they quoted me $200 over the phone for
Live. I left immediatly to pick it up, and then when it rang up at $350, I
forced them to give it to me for $200 anyway. I'm amazed at how this store
is willing to lose money over and over again because of their own mistakes
:-) Good customer service though. I also got a vopy of recycle 2 from them
for $60.

If anyone ID'd this offline, I'd love to know it too. I've never actually
heard a Larry Levan mix before, I figured it was larry Heard. Nice!

[313] GlobalMuse Review - Techno Unit 32: Misc. Tracks

2002-02-01 Thread Mediadrome
!GlobalMuse Review - Techno Unit 32: Misc. Tracks
Larry Kucharz - International Audiochrome IA32

I've never pretended to understand the allure of techno, and find it
difficult to really provide a deep insight into the style. Given that, I must
also state that to me, good music is good music. Larry Kucharz makes some
amazing compositions with his relentless loops, and sounds. To be completely
honest though, I do not understand a damn thing of what Larry is attempting
to do here, but it sounds great. Well, at least for the first 30 seconds or
so.

The music does tend to get on my nerves after a while. This is why I do not
understand the appeal for the style. I can't deny the mastery that it took to
put together these arrangements though. This album should do very well with
those who love the unbridled and boundless creative scale of techno.

Armchair DJ Interview “CLASSICAL TO TECHNO TO CLASSICAL”
“There's an idea John Cage mentions several times in his writings in
different forms. It's about a piece not being finished until it is
performed. I'd like to extend that concept. A work is not finished until
it's recorded and released on CD or other medium. Our technology now permits
this.” - Larry Kucharz interviewed by Brian J. Dillard

Re: [313] about the members

2002-02-01 Thread Jonny McIntosh
Me: Jonny McIntosh, 24.

Live: in London and work for the infamous Music and Video Exchange,
officially doing the accounts, mail order and stuff - actually just trying
to find rare records on the internet and writing up lists until payday comes
(just 4 more days...). Constantly thinking of binning it and getting round
to do a masters.

Previously: Around north east Fife, Scotland for 18 years. Then Oxford and
London for the last 6.

Music: House and jazz are the axes, sweeping in tons from disco, soul, funk,
reggae and, obviously, techno. I have an ever evolving collection of records
that numbers 2500 approx at any given time.

I first stumbled onto Detroit techno in about 93/94 via Black Dog, Global
Communications etc. and visits to Edinburgh clubs Pure and Sativae, and
luckily fell in with fellow Detroit fanatics when I went to university.
Started buying records when I could afford it - I think Kenny Larkin's
Azimuth LP was my first Detroit one. I have DJed for about 6 years around
London and Oxford, with varying degrees of success, and only recently got
more involved in finding my way around bits of equipment.

On the list for 2 or 3 years now, and used to occasionally lurk before that
whilst a student.

Jonny.

It's Tenniswood's own label isn't it? I can't help wondering why they both
release records on so many labels. I mean Warp, RGC, Voodoo, Control Tower,
in the past few months. And that's just off the top of my head, I'm sure
there are many more.

It's like they're both sat around secretly trying to outdo each other: "hah.
He thinks he's got a shiny new label... well I'm not just going to start one
label, I'll start three. Grr...That'll show him... I invented indie
dance..."
