Though detroit remains to be home I've fallen in
love with the northeast corridor. you can be in
baltimore, philadelphia and nyc all in one day. the
winters aren't bad, but you still get four seasons.
right now my heart belongs to philly. it's such a
diverse and growing city. The music scene whether it be
jazz, hip hop, techno etc. is living too. Living is
cheap too and there's neighborhoods to choose from
depending on your personality.

Good luck with where ever you choose. Maybe just take
a month or two to just well...travel and figure it
out for yourself instead of listening to a bunch of
dorks on the internet. ;)

(313) Re: Carl Craig DEMF Lawsuit

2003-08-14 Thread Benn Glazier
I thought this was quite interesting.. an email from Carol Marvin's
attorney on the Marvin vs Craig dispute.

My review was simply a rework of the press release sent out from Planet E
a few months back, so something like this comes as a suprise.

Anyone care to comment or 'know' anything further?

--

Royal, I just read your review of the Carl Craig DEMF lawsuit. I
represented Carol Marvin in that matter. Contrary to what you heard from
Carl, he did NOT win his suit. The jury affirmed that Carol had the right
to terminate him from the THREE YEAR contract - for his failure to
perform his duties under the agreement - but that she owed him a PORTION
of his 2001 payment because his termination was effective May 30, 2001,
and she did not pay him for the last few weeks of the 2001 festival. The
jury pro-rated the amount he should have received up until that date
(less than 10k), which Carol would have paid him had Carl not filed the
unwarranted lawsuit before she cut final checks following the event. He
made himself look like an ass. He was suing for defamation and 50k under
the contract; a contract under which was supposed to serve as the
creative director through the 2002 festival. The judge agreed with me and
threw out the defamation claim as lacking any legal merit, whatsoever,
and the jury awarded him a sympathetic 9k, plus a few extra thousand
dollars for some expenses he was crying about all trial. You can't even
get into Wayne County Circuit Court unless the amount in controversy is a
legitimate 25k MINIMUM dispute. You do the math. He waster two years of
his attorney's time (his attorney couldn't have made more than a few
thousand dollars on the case), his time, and Carol's time, and wasted tax
payer money, as well, all because he is too proud and arrogant to admit
that he screwed up. It's unfortunate that reporters, like yourself,
create fiction out the facts to write what they think their audiences
want to hear, and do it at the expense of others, like my client. I would
appreciate it if you could clear this up with your readers, as it
reflects on my reputation as an attorney, as well. You can check the
Wayne County jury verdict by visiting the Wayne County Michigan Circuit
Court web-site (do a Google search) and doing a docket seach by the last
names of the parties to verify everything.

The interview in the Winter 2001 issue of Straight No Chaser lays all this

Norma Jean used to play jazz bars in the Detroit area in the 70s doing this
wild echoplexed saxaphone thing - amazing.
Frank Zappa recruited her to work in his band for some time; she also
played with Tommy Bolin and several other rock musicians.
I'd have to think about it for a while to remember where she's popped up,
but she's done studio work in several places.

format:12 INCH
status:EARLY SEPTEMBER
additional: Brilliant melodic Electro debut release by new talent from
the 072 area, following up the previous hot tribute remix 12 inch [PT-3003]
feat. Electronome, Keith Tucker and F. Couvée. Magnificent sleeve design by
Noel.

This is the guy who did vocals for Electronome's D-I-E remix Playmobile
invisible [both helped out by Koert Notario]. Almost everybody's favourite
Electronome track with his reference to his roots like Kraftwerk, Liaisons
Dangereuses, Telex, etc.

i.d.:SPLINTERFACTION
title:ULTRAISM 2 EP
format:12 INCH

[ds-02], which already included a marvelous remake by dutch delight Duplex.
This 12 inch includes stunning new deep funky Techno Soul remixes by
masters within it's genre: Dan Curtin, Fabrice Lig and $tinkworx!

Fabrice... $tinkworx... you both can 'put that in your back pocket' as the

(313) Subject: OT? - jungle/db info TEX4 (UK help?)

2003-08-14 Thread David Hampson
I'm listening to Trance Europe Xpress 4 and there is a wicked track by DJ
Crystl - Crystlized that has a very LTJ Bukem sound to it but maybe a tad
more aggressive then most of his output

Crystl dropped a couple of excellent 12s that year (on Payday I think) - 183
and Perpetual Motion; both featured US MCs which gave them a greeat hip hop
feel, much moreso than other dnb releases with MCs... 183rd featured Smiley the
Ghetto Child who has done stuff with Guru, and Perpetual Motion featured
Headrush who was the guy MCing in the street in one of the skits on David
Holmes first album...

I guess if I was looking for a good example of a dnb album that had a strong
techno influence A Guy Called Gerald's Black Secret Technology would be the one
I'd think of first... After that probably T-Power's The Self Evident Truth of
an Intuitive Mind and Waveform... Hopefully I can come up with a longer
list shortly...

I know there is meant to be some kind of connection between Detroit and old
skool - if I remember rightly Carl Craig checked 4-Hero and Shut Up And Dance
on the BFC LP and had some contact with them in the early 90s...

Rubbish online. You need to spend at least $50 and then you pay tons on
shipping. Much of what you order isn't in stock and you end up having paid
$30 in shipping for $10 of records. Good shop if you're in NY, though.

Maybr More Rockers compile their 12 onto a CD with a more dubby drum and

2003-08-14 Thread Odeluga, Ken
I know LTJ Bukem has been panned (but not by everyone) in recent years for
his Logical Progression series going on to volume 200 or something, Although
I tended to like 'em, never bought any before picking up the 'Journey
Inwards' LP from 2000. A lot of it does sound like Logical Progression
stuff, but there's also sort of instrumental soul, breaks and even deep
house. And it's all top-top notch and as wide as it's deep. And yeah the
d'n'b is killer.

BTW - why is this OT? A lot of the artists (especially the older guys) have
strong links to Detroit and it's music. Dego Marc Mac have already been
mentioned. The above LP has a photo of Juan Atkins on it, on the balcony of
Bukem's studio overlooking Watford!

Also check 'Divided Soul' by Fellowship (Creative Source) for a very pure,
disciplined, so obviously Detroit techno-influenced groove, it'll make you
angry! ;-)

RE: (313) philly Algorithm

2003-08-14 Thread Erin Berg (WPL)
I've seen Algorithm quite a few times since he's from TO. He's a really,
really fantastic DJ and if you can, make every effort to see him. That man
has got the techno funk in his DNA. I actually have a relatively recent mix
CD of his made in the last couple of years that an acquaintance of mine who
used to work for a promo company here passed along to me. Its excellent -
but only promo - not a for sale thing. Have the force comp too.

He played Mutek in Montreal this year - Live PA - before the huge Saturday
night headlining show and was pretty good (although in my opinion not as
inspired as I've seen him). But, definitely a positive career step I think.

He's an amazing personality, and one of the best shows I've ever seen from
him was at the Harvest festival just outside TO in 1999. He was DJing and
was pissed because the decks were uneven or something and he actually picked
up one of the record players about 10 minutes into his set with a whole barn
full of people dancing and slammed the player down, screamed, and grabbed
his records and walked out. Ya...It's never dull when Jeff Milligan is in
the haus.

(313) Bone in LA

2003-08-14 Thread James Hurlbut
This guy is playing with Dj Bone in LA on the 29th. I've never heard of
him. Anyone know any info/mix online?

STEPHEN PATE
(DETROIT: CULTURE DISPATCH, BERETTA MUSIC)

Old school House Head and fan of Techno, Stephen was touched by the magic of
early Detroit djs who rebelliously drew from all genres of music. With
respect,

he applies this same formula and continues to blur the lines of category
with an eclectic style of modern beats and nostalgia.

I've also heard that the CD was really limited (200 copies I think) - can

Is this the same venue where UR and Laurent Garnier were playing at?

Btw I am back on the 313 list after a long break.
I now have some time left, since Capsite.net has unofficially closed down.
I agree it is a real shame, with so many visitors every day. But I'll

Yes.. I love the Jacob's Optical Stairway stuff, it's Dego and Marc
Mac... with some collab. with Juan on some of the album tracks... the
whole album is pretty good.

Also Claude Young was involved with some remixes on a Solar Feelings

remixes on the 12, then there is an original and the J. Majik Mix...

It's a cool 12 and worth tracking down if you like this Detroity era

anyone on a db mailing list they can forward this to?

Try Jacob Optical Stairway on RS for a strong Detriot feel. I think one
of
the tracks was co produced by Derrick May ??

Maybr More Rockers compile their 12 onto a CD with a more dubby drum and
bass vibe if you like that kinda thing.

The Mixmag Bukem set still kicks it big time imo.

I'd definitely recommend that particular track - I used to play it out a lot,
and still do now. Being in London, I was extremely familiar with drum'n'bass
music well before this came out, but Claude's mix on this 12 was really like
nothing I'd heard before; people spoke about intelligent dnb but this track
was pretty seriously futuristic.

As Matt says, the Asian elements and the frantically cut-up nature of the track
were most characteristic, but also to me, being well-versed in jungle cliché,
the use of 909 closed hi-hats in the place of the Apache snares (again, hard to
describe) was a really strikingly different feature of that track. And the
strings, of course... reminded me of Claude's track on Frictional, Second
Experience, which also had chords so deep you felt you could swim in them.

To be honest I think that after the mid-1990s drum'n'bass kind of failed to
fulfil its potential - some of the tracks dropped up until 1996 hinted at a
future that I don't really think ever properly happened... (but that's
off-topic! :)

 fantastic.
I was wondering what list members think of agoria - I've heard 'la 11eme
marche' in a number of very different clubs - from a warehouse party to a
nasty little club here in southampton, it sounded very cheesy in the bad
club and very powerful in the warehouse so I had to grab the vinyl they
did a v.nice mix cd 'circle room three turn' that has a lot of 313

RE: (313) Subject: OT? - jungle/db info TEX4 (UK help?)

2003-08-14 Thread David Hampson
Off the top of my head a list of my favourite dnb/jungle/old skool tracks -
whether you can say they relate to techno or not is up to you:

Photek - all his stuff on Photek Productions and Science but especially check
UFO
4-Hero - the earlier you go the better - check Cooking Up Your Brain 12
Parallel Universe LP; their stuff as Tom and Jerry is good too though difficult
to find Mr Kirk's Nightmare
Goldie/Metalheadz - Terminator is a massive tune - think it has just been
reissued; Inner City Life is great too and the Timeless LP. Goldie went down
hill in a big way after that...
Shy FX - most stuff on Ebony and SOUR is brilliant - Original Nuttah with UK
Apachi has the maddest fast rapping on it you ever heard - was recently
reissued; Gangsta Kid probably the next one I'd pick out as a recommendation
(also Gangsta Kid II!). Also check Bambaataa, Cry (T-Power remix)
Omni Trio - Renegade Snares is their big tune - just reissued but don't think
it has the original mix on it...
Roni Size - some big tunes on V - Its Jazzy is the one I'll pick out...
EZ Rollers - Tough at the Top - good jazzy dnb with a nice vocal - remix is a
lot better than the original...
Lemon D - Urban Style Music
Dillinja - The Angels Fell - has quite an electronic edge to it if I remember
rightly...
Alex Reece - Pulp Friction - classic tune, gets used quite a lot on TV these
days for some reason! Alex remixed Model 500 tune on RS though I think it was
the Frank de Wulf mix I preferred; also his remix of Tricky's Brand New Your
Retro...
L Double - Found the Perfect Beat - a version of Looking for the Perfect Beat
Jonny L - Piper Grooverider remix
Acen - Trip to the Moon, Close Your Eyes
Prizna - Fire - this one got reissued a while back and is a on the same lines
as Original Nuttah
Origin Unknown - Valley of the Shadows - just reissued - it tends to appear for
a couple of weeks each year and then vanish; sometimes known as Long Dark
Tunnel...
Kosheen - Find U Decoder remix - there were some trancey mixes of this around
but don't let them distract you! This is a killer tune!
DJ Shadow - What Does Your Soul Look Like remixes
Chaos and the Julia Set - First Generation Dylan remix - this is one of Global
Communication/Jedi Knights dnb aliases (also record as Chameleon on Good
Looking)
T-Power - Mutant Jazz
Smart E's - Bogus Adventure

Obviously there is a lot that is missing and there are things I will pull out
over the next few days and think forgot that one :)... Good discography here
for old skool and dnb labels
http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Concert/9201/discographies.htm
Ultimately, drum and bass can be tracked back to techno during the old skool
years (late 80s early 90s) though German rather than Detroit techno was more
influential due to it being faster and more aggressive (hardcore)...

The last 2 tracks haven't been titled! Everything else has been
 titled...

 Deep Inside
 Geno's Pimp Lounge
 Love Hurts
 Vibe Zone
 You're Still The One Pt.2
 People
 Interlude 1
 Material World
 Take My Hand
 Interlude 2
 Reality

i think the interludes are probably on the vinyl lp so up to here is the
same as the vinyl...

 Pause 1
 Untitled 1
 Untitled 2

so these two untitleds are on one of the kdjs and the salvador de bahia ep
contains other tracks not on the cd/lp

The lot of it is blinding!!!

yep!

2003-08-14 Thread dan

Did DB largely go off the boil in about 95/96? YES
Is More Rockers Dub Plate Selection Vol 1 absolutely amazing and a
purchase on sight CD? YES

More seriously, for a lot of us this mix really defined everything
that could be so good about DB (speaking as a group of people from a
reggae background who loved DB madly at the time)

As for Detroit/DB crossover, look no further than Jazz Juice's
Detroit (Alex Reece and Wax Doctor I believe). Alex Reece also
remixed Kenny Larkin's Loop 2 and often professed a great love of
Detroit Techno.

Still, the bashment style DB has it IMO, with a sideways nod to the
V/Full Cycle massive.

Maybr More Rockers compile their 12 onto a CD with a more dubby drum and

The Mixmag Bukem set still kicks it big time imo.

After that probably T-Power's The Self Evident Truth of an Intuitive

I second that, one of my fave albums ever

I bought waveform but wasn't as good imho

Another excellent DnB album is omni trio - byte size life 4x12 (3rd
track - brothers in detroit)

Some other artists

Big Bud, artemis, Best thing is to look at the track listing on
the EARTH compilations and use artists there as a guide.

it's open - ever.

For whoever was asking about the 22nd, Chicken Lips are playing @ Plastic
People, and there's this. Ramar is good. I think the other blokes are too,
but haven't heard 'em properly.

VOICES::Soundsytem return to host the the MAIN ROOM (at a 500-800 capacity
venue somewhere in Hoxton) on *FRIDAY 22nd AUGUST* as part of the Hoxton
Pimps Bank Holiday / Carnival Special 3-day party.

...from 11pm Friday, way into Saturday morning...
VOICES:: DJ's ALEX (Attica Blues Allstars), CEDRIC WOO, RAMAR (Materielle)
with live percussion by BONGOMANIAC

search-deep-party-hard music via Deep House, Detroit Techno, Italo /
Electro, Dub, Disco, Afro/Funk/Fusion, Warehouse Classics...

we will be seeking to lift the roof off the room - time to EXPRESS!!! - at
the last event the main room was at 3/4 capacity when we had to finish at
6am when we were just getting warmed up . we are expecting this forthcoming
event to run until 8 or 10am.

you heard it before because we say it often - show your faces, move your
feet, lift your Voices!

And then there's all that other stuff, like Hood + Ralph Lawson @ Fabric and
Derrick Carter, Luke Solomon + Rob Mello @ The End this Saturday if you're
still going post-Public Life, then Mills/Plaid/Vadim @ Lost next Sunday,
versus Hawtin + Magda @ The End, but if you don't come to Bootytronics @
Public Life first, you'll miss out on all the proper [313] business. ;)
