It definitely makes me think of that quote, "the hardness in techno comes from funk" - it's hard techno, but it doesn't achieve that hardness by being loopy, heavily distorted or pushing the BPM up massively. Hard techno as it should be! It also puts me in mind of what Aril Brikha has said about how Drexciya's "Black Sea" is one of his favourite techno tracks, as it demonstrates perfectly how something can be fairly hard techno yet still incorporate strings and other elements, rather than just get stripped down to the loopy club fodder. "Trolley Route - A Occhi Chiusi (Pure Plastic)" Agree with you there. Well produced, hard techno, basically, that deviates from club fodder yawndom. -Original Message- From: Brendan Nelson [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 09 December 2003 3:01 To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: (313) More new (well, newish) records reviewed Having enjoyed my old-fashioned "record shopping" trip to ye olde Berwick Street the weekend before last, I just couldn't resist heading on down there again. It's over ten years since I started frequenting the shops of Berwick Street, and by now the smell of rotting vegetable matter (from the street market) is firmly linked, in my mind, to the experience of acquiring new vinyl. And what website can assault your nostrils with such a pungent stench as you're browsing their online catalogue?? None! Again, I bought a few records "randomly" alongside the ones I'd been specifically looking for - what with all these end-of-year lists that have been published, my want list is becoming fairly lengthy, but that doesn't stop me from buying the odd thing I've never heard of just for the excitement of discovery... Shawn Rudiman - Deal With It (Eleventh Hour) The first release from new London label Eleventh Hour makes a clear statement about the direction we can expect the label to pursue - well-produced, colourful, club-oriented but still highly listenable techno music. On this EP, it's the first track on each side that does it for me; "Bluesky" reminds me of "Star Dancer" in a way, with its slowly developing chord static over a pacey rhythm, while "That's What I'm Talkin About" on the flip is my favourite cut with its variety of sparkling synth sounds floating over another insistent club rhythm. The other two tracks blend electro and broken beat influences, with "Welcome to the Junkyard" doing it most effectively IMHO. Rei Loci - Faction EP (Seventh Sign) The question is, is there a place in the world for high-quality dancefloor techno which is influenced by old Orlando Voorn and Black Dog records? And the answer to the question, on the basis of this release, is a resounding "yes!". The range of influences on display here is staggering, and I find it difficult to think of other producers who come up with tracks which incorporate that much melodic variation and complexity into solid, heads-down techno so effectively. I was expecting a lot from this release after reading more than a few positive reviews, and was not disappointed in the least. What are the other Seventh Sign releases like, by the way? K-Led - Tomorrow In The Morning LP (Force Inc) I'd picked out the 12" of "Detroit City" to listen to in Koobla, but the staff member tasked with tracking down the stack of vinyl I'd picked out said I may as well check the album instead, so I did. Pretty stunning stuff I have to say! Really proper techno, wearing its Detroit influences on its sleeve, with that perfect balance between atmosphere, funk and rhythm that characterises most of my favourite techno records. Haven't had enough time to give a track-by-track rundown, though - I've only scanned through it once, and I'm really looking forward to sitting down and listening to the whole thing later on tonight (although I don't know if I'll be able to remain sitting all the way through the LP!)... Trolley Route - A Occhi Chiusi (Pure Plastic) A random purchase, this one. I got it home and had a look at the back of the sleeve, which told me that this album had been produced by Oscar Mulero. Without any real preconceptions about what it might sound like (not being overly familiar with Mr Mulero's material), I put it on, and had a weird flashback sort of experience. Years and years ago, when I was still discovering a lot of 313-type techno music, I'd go to Fat Cat records in its little basement cupboard underneath that menswear shop in Covent Garden, and while I was flipping the racks in search of records by people I'd heard of I'd hear these techno records which combined dirtily shimmering chords and strings with pacey but measured drum programming - which sounds like a lot of techno when described like that, I guess, but was in fact a particular sort of sound that I've always find hard to actually track down (back in those days, the closest I was able to get was "Cosmic Movement" on Red Planet 2). Anyway, this album is *very much* that sort of sound - the sound that I first latched on to as being *serious* techno back in the days when I was still a relative newcomer to the scene. The drums are nicely compressed with a metallic rusty texture to the higher percussive elements (ride cymbals, open hi-hats etc); there are a lot of strings, all of which have that nice dirty sound to them which complements the heavy sound of the drums perfectly. Some of the tracks are more explicitly funky, with house-style stabs and chord progressions working extremely well against the punchy drum p

Having enjoyed my old-fashioned "record shopping" trip to ye olde Berwick Street the weekend before last, I just couldn't resist heading on down there again. Some of the tracks are more explicitly funky, with house-style stabs and chord progressions working extremely well against the punchy drum production. Definitely a 2x12" set that'll be in my record box for a good while! Paul St Hilaire - Faith (False Tuned) I was on the lookout for this release after Matt MacQueen's "Quadrant Dub III" comment, and was lucky to find one - it seems to have been flying off the shelves! Matt's description is bang-on as well. I don't thi

I have heard a couple of tracks that use samples of Nina Simone that are pretty good that I don't think anyone has mentioned yet. The Air track on the Super Discount compilation (I have the 10" with an etienne de crecy track on the other side) which is really lush, but which the BBC decided to play to death in an advert for themselves :( and there's a Thomas Brinkmann track on the Row cd that also samples Nina. Neither tune is a cover or anything, but I think they are both worth checking out and use the samples with a degree of sincerity. matt :)

I also think a lot of Felix's stuff over the last couple of years has been great, but I don't think he's "exploiting the glitz s**t". Presumably this is a reference to his Kittinz & Thee Glitz album, which was something of a surprise hit and so has led to lots more production opportunities for him. I can't see anything wrong with that myself. 'Course he does dodgy mixes here and there, no-one's great all the time: his mix of the new Chemical Bros record sucks the big one, for example. But he does some crackers too, such as his mix of Iggy Pop feat Peaches 'Motor Inn'. As far as I'm concerned, Felix rocks. Re: (313) felix disrespecting nina simone was re: Alton Miller
The Montreal guy who mixed Nina's Black Is The Colour... did OK. He sent that in as a fan and they added it as the last track and it's the best effort. He's actually a jazz house musician. I think he had an album out. The MAW of See Line Woman on Verve 1 is stunning and was a hit. I think Felix and Nina is just a mismatch, I knew that wouldn't work. Francois or Claussell or Craig... that woulda been sweet. Funnily enough, Massive Attack wanted to work with Nina too on their last album but were apparently too 'scared' to ask. -- >From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] >To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] >Subject: Re: (313) felix disrespecting nina simone was re: Alton Miller >Date: Tue, 9 Dec 2003 4:45 PM > > > > > > I have a strong feeling that Nina Simone wouldn't want any of her songs to > be "remixed" by anyone > she was just that kind of gal;) > > MEK > > > > > [EMAIL PROTECTED] > > .com To: > [EMAIL PROTECTED] >cc: 313@hyperreal.org > > 12/08/03 09:40 PMSubject: (313) felix > disrespecting nina simone was re: Alton Miller > > > > > > > > > On Tue, 09 Dec 2003 13:55:05 +1100, "Cyclone Wehner" > wrote: > >> I don't like it at all, either. > > ***cyclone has seconded, so I'll third the dislike of > felix's "remix" of nina simone. I second andrew dukes praise of King Britt's Miles Davis remix. I heard it on the radio late night here in San Diego. That would be the only time I have heard it, and it was probably the only time it has ever been played on the radio here on the un-creative capital of the radio. I don't think that Felix Da Housecat has been all that great here in the last couple of years. I havn't ever heard anything off the Clashbakk label that I thought was all that great in the last few year. Best release on Clashbakk: LA Williams-Jedi Knight...Where the hell has LA gone to? -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, December 09, 2003 3:40 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: (313) felix disrespecting nina simone was re: Alton Miller Anyone heard the remix king britt did of a miles davis track a couple of years back? I arrived to find that a) the regular host was indeed there and b) that the record he had put on while waiting for me to show up was the felix remix of nina simone. (The host explained that because I wasn't there on time and because this record was in the "new release section" at the station marked as "electronica" that it would be a good bridge for my listeners that I was keeping waiting by being late. I politely asked him in future to play anything other than electronic music should I be late again!) I quickly faded the record down and apologized for the listeners having heard that horrible bastardization of the late great nina simone. I don't like it at all, either. The only mix of Felix's I've liked this year (ironically) is his mix of Aussie soap star (another one) Holly Valance! That State Of Mind was good electro disco pop. They wanted Carl Craig to do a mix on that second Verve vol, would have saved it. -- >From: "Thomas D. Fairly slow, even for Theo Parrish, but one of his best. Also, his 12" on archive was just repressed. Thanks for the tips! Tristan === http://www.phonopsia.co.uk [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: (313) Book: Generation Ecstasy : Into the World of Techno andRave Culture
It's suberbly written and provocative which is a good thing but the thesis really troubles me. I don't mean to come across all condensing and anti-drug, as I may have in previous posts, what people do is their own business, but I do feel strongly about ensuring people realise not everyone active in this culture takes drugs. Even Ferry Corsten who makes power trance, and Armin Van Burren, claim to have never taken E. I personally felt he really misrepresented Mills in that book, I felt there was quite a personal attack in there, I can't recall the context. I feel he marginalises Detroit, period. He also only incidentally mentions the absence of women in the scene. I think there is a lot to critique but it's an important document regardless. Everyone should read it. -- >From: "Thomas D.
