RE: (313) what's your favorite track/album right now?/HIP HOP
There was a Harmonic33 12" on Alphabet Zoo called 'Kaleidoscopic Sounds EP', the first release on the label in fact, and yes it is indeed Mark Pritchard of Global Comms/Jedi Knights etc fame. I'm reliably informed that he is a massive hip hop head. I believe that Alphabet Zoo is Danny Breaks' label (for all you old Junglists out there). Wonderful 12" if you ever come across it, deep late night hip hop instrumentals in a crisp Primo/Spinna/Pete Rock style (and that isn't an idle comparison). Erm, let me think, ah yes, Mark Pritchard has a picture of Mad Mike tattoed on his left buttock and Danny Breaks is Juan Atkins' Uncle. > m. pritchard (sp?) has a nice 12" out as harmonic33 on some german label. That's Alphabet Zoo - there's actually a couple of 12"s and a CD album from Harmonic33 so far... The Danny Breaks releases on Alphabet Zoo are also well worth checking - 'The Jellyfish' from his 'Another Dimension' release kicks off the 20.02.04 radio show at www.spatialsounds.com (under 'sounds') - nice stuff in the Dabrye/Prefuse 73 kinda mould... Here's some links: http://www.discogs.com/label/Alphabet_Zoo http://www.rekkid.co.uk/alphabetzoo/ http://www.gmediamusic.com/partnerships/harmonic33.html And Rob, yes it's Mark Pritchard of Reload/GlobComm etc fame - doing much better solo work than Tom Middleton these days IMHO :) Cheers, Tom
RE: (313) Techno's Video (was voice)
seems more electronic artists are actually getting into visual accompaniments, i heard richard devine has a dvd coming out, autechre's gantz graf was pretty impressive, richie's disconnect (and maybe a dvd?), and another i probably shouldn't be talking about quite yet.. it's a good path, virtually unexplored especially when you throw in the 5.1 possibilities gondry, spike jonze, and cunningham do their most interesting work with musicians they're into, like white stripes, beasties, aphex/squarepusher, hopefully more pimp directors that are into good techno will start popping up take care /. kcAustin /. www.wddg.com /. www.bzor.com -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, March 10, 2004 11:35 AM To: Andrew Cc: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: RE: (313) Techno's Video (was voice) >A cool thing about techno is that it never went down that path, although a truly visual >representation of techno is probably waiting to happen - I always pictured >the coolest scenes from Drexciya making it into videos, kind of a window >into that world, an underwater dance party... and I guess it's people like >Jeff who are leading the charge with his DVD. As I mentioned once before on this list - there used to be a website that had videos of techno artists but is no longer in operation. It's too bad because they had Carl Craig's "Televised Green Smoke" video - which was very cool. I'd love to see some collection on DVD of Detroit techno/house videos past and present. With all the underground video makers and people like Michel Gondry and such into cutting edge/underground music you'd think someone would be approaching some techno heads to make videos. I don't mean some shaky hand-held DV shot in a dark club but actual music videos with concepts and higher production. Anyone remember the Inner City videos? If not check them out on KMS's website. I know - nowadays it takes major label money to make most videos but I don't think this is entirely true anymore with the technology and talent available MEK

on the phat kat front - check Phat Kat aka Ronnie Cash - Dedication To The Suckers on House Shoes - another Jay Dee prod, heavy! Also has a handy Detroit Road Map on the cover... Other synthy hip hop: Def Harmonic on Altered Vibes, some very technoey synth moments on their stuff - deeply pleasing, the track 'Doing The Best I Can' is great, though some of their other tracks are marred by weak MCing in places. Altered Vibes is part of the Goya stable as far as I know, but these people sound American, anyone know where they're from? Blockhead also deserve an honourable mention in this category. Anyone else heard the new Pete Rock import on Up Above? - b-side is lurvely. P.S. Before anyone asks, Pete Rock is Richie Hawtin's evil twin, Blockhead is the secret UK downtempo project of Eddie Fowlkes and Def Harmonic use old transmat CDs as beer coasters, so ner! I'll second the Stanton rec. I've got the same model and it's been great. It may have more bells & whistles than you need (3 channels, fx loop, adjustable fader slopes) so you may prefer to opt for a more basic model, but as far as audio components go, if you're looking for a good mixer at mid-range price I'd say Stanton or Rane. -- Tim Moore On Mar 10, 2004, at 12:10 PM, Rob Tyte wrote: My behringer became very very noisy very very quickly on the x-fader I would not buy another one personally. Ahh that's swt news to my ears - the faster they dump the Pioneers the better imo. i just played on the newest $1000+ Pioneer DJM600s and it felt like a fricken toy. The interface is too busy the efx unit is a cluttered hassle (too bad that this is the thing that is supposed to separate this mixer from all others) and visually I can't tell if it's on or off the headphone split cue - didn't work the way it does on a Vestax - which is quite simple - it splits the cue cold at a press of the button the faders - I think - are far too loose the EQ pots are too thick and short for these fingers (and they feel like cheap plastic parts) the volume faders seem to be either off or on - bring the fader half-way up and there is a moment in there where you go from hearing nothing to being in the mix no kill switches/faders compared to the layout of my Vestax this mixer is a mess - plus the $300 I save on the mixer allowed me to buy a Pioneer EFX-500 which is a thousand times better than the built in efx unit on the DJM600. the sound on the Vestax is said to be better too. end my rant MEK <[EMAIL PROTECTED] nder.co.uk>To: "Blackman, Ryan \(UKEKT\)" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, "matt kane's brain" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, "Blackman, Ryan \(UKEKT\)" 03/10/04 11:13 AM <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, "jurren baars" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, <313@hyperreal.org> cc: Subject: RE: (313) need a new mixer. advice please! ah ok , I new it would be a bit bad as the price for all those effects is low but didn't realise sound was bad.thnaks for that man, I will try it out though as I hear the clubs are now all dumping the pioneers in favour as the pre-amps have blown so many monitors.. -Original Message- From: Blackman, Ryan (UKEKT) [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wed 10/03/2004 17:08 To: 'matt kane's brain'; Blackman, Ryan (UKEKT); jurren baars; 313@hyperreal.org Cc: Subject: RE: (313) need a new mixer. advice please! Re: (313) Techno's Voice
what about the weird song hawtin played at Jak a few years ago, where either the track or the record slowed down with a girl saying (called you callled yu) it was really creepy and got real slow, then he let things take off again and I remember the bass distorting my vision. don't know if anyone has given the answer yet (the number of unreadable mails - due to mail format - on the digest is growing fast, first ian, now robert and brendan aswell.) but i think it's not lil' louis, but green velvet 'the stalker' "i called you... but you weren't there. who were you with last night? is it someone i know? i followed you in my blue car. etc." that's an eerie track! jurren _ Play online games with your friends with MSN Messenger http://messenger.msn.nl/
Re: (313) need a new mixer. advice please!
I've had very long faithful service from the Vestax PMC 25, it's a funny shape but the NY House DJ style rotary faders on the kills are great (they're also accompanied by short slide faders that are the perfect length) + the kills do actually cut out their frequencies down to infinty db - rare on most mixers and very handy. What's more, it's survived about 4 years of sporadic touring the continent slung about in the back of a van, not to mention numerous warehouse parties with all the risks this entails (think ceilings literally pouring with condensation and hammered punters spraying beer everywhere) best recommendation of all though is that I love using it P.S. NO.: PFRCD11 / PFRLP11 RELEASE DATE: 26th APRIL 2004 The seminal electro-funk outfit from Detroit returns with a second album. 'Galactic Ass Creatures From Uranus' spans a full variety of minimal techno, dirty P-Funk, raw hip-smart booty beats and downbeat electronic grooves - all spiced-up with a healthy portion of humour, cartoon sexuality and the search for the perfect booty. As ever the vocoder-pitched vocals by Paris The Black Fu and the other odd characters mark their distinctive signature sound. Founded in 1998, the Pubahs group around producer and vocalist Paris The Black Fu and his forked personalities. Their first single, 'Sandwiches', became a huge worldwide club hit overnight and made it into the Billboard dance charts as well as in the UK Top20 sales charts. The album 'Funk All Y'all' was released in 2001 on the now defunct Jive Electro imprint. Since then, the Pubahs completed a world tour and started working on 'Galactic Ass Creatures From Uranus'. Again the new album is brimful of straight forward booty tracks, raw Funk and weird skits, but this time relaxed downbeat electronic grooves enrich the Pubah's sound cosmos and make the 'Galactic Ass Creatures >From Uranus' a state of the art electronic album whilst of course being great fun to listen to. Smoothly starting with 'Landing in Detroit', the second track 'God Impostors' makes a pure funk statement, before the emotional Electro track 'Surrender' leads over to 'Big Onion'. 'If you like the way I drop my funk: just shake it!' Next up is the darker side of the album with 'Definition of Sick' and 'Dead Presidents', before the epic 'Tig O' Bake Fitties' lays out a downtempo funk ode to natural body parts. The beautifully gentle lounger 'Bite The Pillow Talk' lets you take breath for some more punchy booty beats on 'Freak' and 'Weed in the Kitchen'. 'The Clapper' picks up on the sleeve design and reports from another alien intrusion in that typical Detroit Grand Pubahs style. After already introducing Dick Cannon ('Bite the Pillow Talk', 'Training With Dick Cannon') Bill Crosby ('Weed In The Kitchen') and Dirty Elvis DePorno ('Freak') amongst Paris The Black Fu we also meet Nurse Hurse again, a character that was initially involved on the debut album. Finally, the hypnotising 'Novacane' sets a speech by Malcolm X to music. The first 12" outtake (The Clapper feat. Jesper Dahlback remix, pfr38) from the album has already stirred quite a buzz and made it into many club charts including the official German Dance charts. The next single 'Big Onion' (feat. Joakim remix, pfr43) will be released in March and will come with a video. The most prominent guest musicians involved in the album are Scott Sumner (engineering) and Randall G. Lynch (guitar) who are regular studio musicians for George Clinton. The album release will be supported

Well the thought I had was an animation, rather than a live action. And I don't mean a Gollum-type affair, just an amazingly colourful 2D animation, like Ullysses 31! Imagine the cartoon you could create! Based on the labels and cover art, you could see an underwater world, an ancient race with advanced knowledge, and advanced music of course! They have contacts above ground but stay underwater, only surfacing for various missions. For segues and transitions, you could have the coolest edits of Drexciya tracks, and little 1-2 second excerpts for links! Either that or making a Drexciya video game, or a feature length about the plight of the Drexciyans. It's such cool mythology, they must have been approached to do something with it - anyone more in the know on this? Cheers, Andrew -Original Message- From: Brendan Nelson [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 10 March 2004 16:06 To: Katrin Richter; Andrew; 313@hyperreal.org Subject: Aqua Boogie (was RE: (313) Techno's Voice) I know what you mean about the sort of Drexciyan underwater dance party and how hard it would be to capture that sort of thing on video! I read somewhere that when Parliament made the "Motor Booty Affair" album, the original plan was that it would be a soundtrack to a film Clinton was hoping to make that was based on the concept of an undersea party - I always thought that if that had been made (it never actually materialised) it would be a pretty Drexciyan sort of video. As it stands the most appropriate visual accompaniment to Drexciya's music that I've come across is that movie "Atlantis" by Luc Besson (although with the sound turned off, of course)... Another good Drexciya-style image is the cover of "Techno City" by EVIAN on Techno Kut - I can't find it online, but it has a couple of line-drawn starfish and squids hanging around holding SH-101s (with the extension thingy you use to be able to play it like a guitar) and TR-808s in front of an aquatic backdrop of seaweed and corals. The music is really nice on that release as well; seriously proto-Drexciyan sound and visuals from 1988! The album release will be supported by an extended European tour starting in late February in Dublin. Paris The Black Fu is also organising a Funk Stage on the 10 Days Off festival in Belgium in July. CD Tracklisting 1. Landing In Detroit 2. God Impostors 3. Surrender (The Bedroom Edit) 4. (313) Fw: Detroit Grand Pubahs New Album
ARTIST: DETROIT GRAND PUBAHS TITLE: GALACTIC ASS CREATURES FROM URANUS LABEL: POKER FLAT FORMAT: 2 x CD / 2 x 12" CAT. Again the new album is brimful of straight forward booty tracks, raw Funk and weird skits, but this time relaxed downbeat electronic grooves enrich the Pubah's sound cosmos and make the 'Galactic Ass Creatures From Uranus' a state of the art electronic album whilst of course being great fun to listen to. I know what you mean about the sort of Drexciyan underwater dance party and how hard it would be to capture that sort of thing on video! The music is really nice on that release as well; seriously proto-Drexciyan sound and visuals from 1988! the theo party is alledgedly happening at APT soon. this thursday (march 11) at APT, however, donnie blackoutz "basement jam 2084" monthly party is on from 10pm-4am. donnie looks and sounds suspiciously like darshan jesrani, of metro area. (APT - 419 W 13th btw 9th and washington) as for other nyc events, try the nyhappenings list on yahoo groups. it's not strictly electronic music events, but it does include them and is ridiculously more comprehensive than alot of other music listings out there. plus it's run by new york's most social grump ever- this guy seriously goes to 3-4 music events every night. if he doesn't know about an event, someone on the list will. http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/nyhappenings/ -Original Message- From: Pete Grammenos [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, March 09, 2004 3:33 PM To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: (313) John Beltran Also, to bump up the Theo percentage, there's a solid rumour going round that he's starting a monthly here in NYC at APT !! ;)) -Pete -- Date: Wed, 10 Mar 2004 00:16:06 -0500 (EST) To: KC Austin <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: 313 <313@hyperreal.org> Subject: Re: (313) NY event sites Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> actually- i'll be in nyc this thursday (11th) and next tue (17th) any suggestions? Lil Louis & The World - I Called U there was a 3 part release on epic, a couple duplicates of those on FFRR. There a multiple versions/parts of that tune, and I'd imagine hawtin was playing one of them. - Original Message - From: Brendan Nelson <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Date: Wednesday, March 10, 2004 10:47 am Subject: RE: (313) Techno's Voice > It's called "I Called You"... > > That vocal always cracks me up! RE: (313) Techno's Voice (WAS - RE: (313) what's your favorite track/album right now?)
Robert said: The only conclusions I can draw from this kind of debate is that our language is inadequate for describing music. Both Soul and Techno are inadequate labels because the words have emotionally/culturally loaded meanings, whereas the music just is - a techno track might inspire a similar emotion as a soul song but why is in the realms of musicology, which takes me way out my depth. -- Yeah, me too! But it's certainly interesting, when thinking about what makes a certain track do it for you. There can be the scientific angle of 'wow, amazing sound design and production', or the pure energy of a dirty, jackin, lo-fi Chicago track, or the aspirational, uplifting melodies of the classic Detroit techno number. It's interesting when thinking about new stuff, like, what is it doing that hasn't been done before? What is it expressing? It could be that it's slightly more transparent in vocalised music, also more directed as you say. Wow, what a thought - music describing music!

There are obviously excellent examples of this in techno (the Relics EP by Abacus immediately springs to mind). Without degenrating into the old soul vs. machine 'debate', is there more to the fact that these separate styles exist, in that they express different emotions or feelings? A lot of techno is basically saying 'Come the f*ck on!', and all the better for it. Is it merely the distinction between lyric-laden music and 'tracks'? is my ban from 313 gone yet? My current fave is a rediscovered oldie out of the RZA´s magic hat, Shyheims Young Godz. Crazy beat, crazy mc´s, classic stuff!! I usually can tell most off the stuff that´s going on in a beat but this one remains a mystery... also on rotation is Missy´s Wake up from the last album which is incredible. I guess what's on my mind is - what the f*ck is techno music SAYING?? Katrin said: breakin' up, hold up... Can you hear me now? Yeah. So what day did you say? Oh yeah. Thursday's perfect, man. -- Oh no, is that the video!? Man, I hate it when videos try and be a movie! And yes, that sequence is cheesy as hell! I haven't seen or heard it but it really annoys me when artists try to make the video more than it is AND FAIL! (Thriller is the classic example of the approach working.) Hip-hop/R&B videos are a massive culprit, I remember that Fugees vid for 'Ready or Not' when they're in helicopters, and flying around an sh*t! A cool thing about techno is that it never went down that path, although a truly visual representation of techno is probably waiting to happen - I always pictured the coolest scenes from Drexciya making it into videos, kind of a window into that world, an underwater dance party... and I guess it's people like Jeff who are leading the charge with his DVD. RE: (313) what's your favorite track/album right now?/HIP HOP
thanks ken for the info, i'll keep my eyes out for those releases. two things i've heard recently [both 313 related] are the lacksydaisycal album, which was nice, reminding a bit of common on one or two songs, and jaydee has a hand in it aswell. some very nice tunes, but not the best hiphop album ever. worth to check if you like sv, j-dilla, common. another one is the jimmy edgar 12" on warp, as it was mentioned on littledetroit. after reading the description on the site, i had high hopes, but to my ears only the third track came close to achieving some of the praise it had been given. should probably listen to it once more. also saw a jaydee produced phat kat release on house shoe records (?) from detroit on the rushhour mailout. if i'm not mistaken this is the last track that was on the 2000demf mix by dego that used to be up on groovetech. anyone know more about phat kat/house shoe? i've got a remix by dwele that also features phat kat, so i assume he's done loads of things allready, anything i should keep an eye out for? http://www.bling47.com for more detroit hiphop. jurren _ MSN Search, for accurate results! http://search.msn.nl
(313) Dale Lawrence MIA?
Does anybody know what Dale is up to these days? I know he's played DEMF before, was he there last year? The theorem web site has been static for a while now, is he still making music? Cheers -- Mike
Re: (313) Theo
Thanks for all suggestions, I managed to get hold of some of the Main Street releases :) I don't know why I hadn't picked up these before I have lots of bc stuff and some rhythm and sound. Unfortunately the re-press of the original three chairs double pack isn't in stock. Cheers -Mike Michael Lees wrote: Hi all, Since Theo already takes 10% of traffic I figure this is on topic enough. I'm after some recommendations. I just got hold of the the three chairs theme ep and I love it. I don't buy much house :) Could people recommend some essential theo/kdj/moodyman in a similar vein? I really like smile by theo too btw. Thing is, I've got silence in the secret garden and while it's nice I don't like this as much. Cheers
RE: (313) Techno's Voice (WAS - RE: (313) what's your favorite track/album right now?)
The only conclusions I can draw from this kind of debate is that our language is inadequate for describing music. Both Soul and Techno are inadequate labels because the words have emotionally/culturally loaded meanings, whereas the music just is - a techno track might inspire a similar emotion as a soul song but why is in the realms of musicology, which takes me way out my depth. -Original Message- From: Andrew [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, March 10, 2004 12:49 PM To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: (313) Techno's Voice (WAS - RE: (313) what's your favorite track/album right now?) AW: (313) Techno's Voice
"Let yourself go!" it says to me (sometimes). Sometimes it whispers "why so much melancholy?" when being confronted with the mere beauty of a bassline or string laden arrangements... "Remember these moments when not much more mattered than a pounding beat"... But most of the times it's not saying anything... nothing like "By-be bayy-be bay-bee - it's getting kinda crayyzee" - never heard that one before... I don't like pap. I don't like gossip. I don't like stuff like this (spoken with this kinda cutesy kinda stupid television voice): Well I'm a have to just gon head and call this boy. Hello? Can I speak to...to Michael? Oh, hey how you doin'? > So how did she get his phone no. if she doesn't even know his name Uh, I feel kinna silly doin this but, uh, this is the waitress from the coffee house on 39th from > so she is a waitress then, huh? You know the one with the braids? Yeah. Well I see you on Wednesdays all the time. You come in every Wednesday on your lunch break, I think. And you always order the special...with the hot chocolate. My manager be trippin and stuff talkin 'bout we gotta use water, but... I always use some milk and cream for you, cause... I think you kinna sweet. (laughs) Anyway, you always got on some fly blue suit and your cufflinks is shining all bright. So what you do? Oh word? Yeah that's interestin'... Look man, I mean, I don't wanna waste your time but... I know girls don't usually do this, > OUCH! Who says this?? but I was wonderin' if maybe we could get together outside the restaurant one day? You know 'cause I do look a lot different outside my work clothes and... I mean we could just go across the street to the park, right here... Wait, hold up, my... my cell phone's breakin' up, hold up... Can you hear me now? Yeah. So what day did you say? Oh yeah. Thursday's perfect, man. I guess I am just thinking too much about meaning to accept this as something valid. -Ursprüngliche Nachricht- Von: Andrew [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Gesendet: Mittwoch, 10.
