I could care less who is who, or what is what, but can't you see that the majority (or dare I say it, the VAST majority) of squabbles on this list contain you? Seriously. This list *IS* about music, and you seem to think that any opinion different than yours is a personal attack on you. That is your deficiency, not the list's or other listmembers'. Personally, I could care less about whatever you sqaubble about, but the endless tirades the you continue to take to the public side of this list are bringing down the quality of the entire list. No, it's not your words that bring down the quality, it's the meaningless mails that create apathy towards the list. Some of the senior members of the list just have better things to do than listen to your relentless battles about how you are this or that or whatever else. They unsub, and the experience of everyone decreases, all because you have a gigantic chip that is immovable. Please. I don't know you from Adam, and I don't dislike you, nor have I said anything worthy of a personal attack towards you. Just let these things go, and let us talk about our music... or lack thereof... The ones that are the most popular, are the DJ funk version, and the killabite (ben sims) version. RE: (313) paxahau/kompakt
I haven't seen Detroit dance like that in a long while. Big ups to Paxacrew and to the people that came out and had a great time. For those that weren't there: The party started off at "Times Square Detroit", which normally caters to shiny shirts and sequins. Michel Mayer was playing some really wicked tracks, very "bleepy" and "bloopy", for lack of better adjectives. The intensity of the crowd hasn't been felt like that since at least DEMF. Reinhard Voigt came on with a live set that was extremely facsinating to listen to and at the same time EXTREMELY dancable. At 2am, the party was moved to the "afterparty" location, which happens to be the Legendary Burst Audio equipment warehouse. I shouldn't even have to add that the sound was impeccable, but it was - and the venue was a cement warehouse out on Michigan Ave., not too far from "the Works" or the Old Tiger Stadium. Immediately upon entering, everyone knew what was up. There was an electricity and a (dare I say) "vibe" that only a warehouse party in Detroit can offer, and it was certainly well recieved. The Paxahau residents, Drew Maddox and Chuck Flask were on point to start the after party, and as soon as the entire crowd had relocated, it was just madness. To close off the night, Deadbeat (from Montreal) played some really "dub" type ambient or downtempo that eased the crowd, and sounded spectacular. Dennis BTW - I'm still recovering, and I'm sure that most everyone is - as Christian Bloch's going away party on Friday kicked off the madness, and Saturday drove it home... -Original Message- From: atomly [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, September 29, 2003 1:53 PM To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: (313) paxahau/kompakt I'm pretty damn surprised nobody's been talking about this. (313) Plastikman - Closer
Please forgive me if this has already been discussed, as I haven't yet seen anything about it. After giving "Closer" a few listens, I have to say that I'm very impressed at not only the musical quality but the way in which "Plastikman" was able to keep that traditional Plastikman sound, yet meld it into a new album that isn't walking on exactly the same ground that he's walked before. The whole album plays out like an album should, a full context of itself, with each song becoming a part of a greater whole, which is very enjoyable as a listener. All of the compositions include somewhat basic production methods, but used in a sort of finesse that really uses each part to its potential, instead of relying on tons of layers to tune out things that don't quite work. The very industrial-inspired vocal work is pretty non-descript and not over-the-top or cheesy, as one would suspect simply given the description. The heavy use of delay and reverb gives every production a lot of space and feel, ala "Consumed", but the songs all have more of driving presence akin to the direction of earlier albums (sheet one, musik). This album is a marvel in keeping pace with expectation without dissapointing the faithful followers of a specific sound, while adding some new elements. Definitely Plastikman, but at the same time, definitely new. Buy on site. -dmd

RE: (313) Technics 1200s question
That's not entirely true. I used to own a pair of Technics 1200s that were brought over from Germany, and the PSU on that model could handle 110v-120v 220v-240v and 50hz-60hz. I didn't have to do anything except change the plug. I see that all of the ones being sold in the UK and Germany advertise the same sort of power supply, but I don't know if the ones sold in the US have the same PSU. It's very likely that it will say the power supply properties where the power cable exits the molded plastic. If it can handle 110v-120v 220v-240v and 50hz-60hz, then you'll only need to change the type of plug :) Dennis -Original Message- From: ::P [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, July 22, 2003 5:16 PM To: Dennis DeSantis; 313@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: (313) Technics 1200s question hey dennis, probably nto gonna be easy. you can get a step up tranformer from radio shack though, and it will handle the conversion for you - Original Message - From: "Dennis DeSantis" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <313@hyperreal.org> Sent: Tuesday, July 22, 2003 5:04 PM Subject: (313) Technics 1200s question > Hi folks, > > I'm no DJ, so this is probably a dumb question for most of you. > I'm wondering if it's possible/easy to modify the Technics 1200 to have > a power supply that's switchable between US and European voltages? > There doesn't appear to be a handy switch for it the way there is on > lots of computer gear. > Anyone done this? > > Thanks, > > -- > Dennis DeSantis > www.dennisdesantis.com >
RE: (313) Chris Liebing
There are a few different thoughts on how Schranz [the word] originated (some say that it was used in WWII comic strips as a loud onomatopoeia) (others say that it was made up combining the German words Schrieen (to Cry or Yell out : To scream) and Tanzen (to Dance) - which would mean dancing and screaming at the same time...). Chris Liebing started using this word on his release in 97-98, and it has come to define a form of techno that sound like really fast organ grinder music (ala the Stigmata releases, or alot of umek records, you can also hear that sound on alot of schall-platten records). This created a movement in Germany, where there was a large following of "trendy" types of clubgoers - alot like the "Trance" following in America, which may be where the "bad word" connotation stems from (bad meaning "tasteless" not offensive). RE: (313) Cartridges for SL1200's
I used to buy Stanton Carts and styli, and I was buying them about one replacement stylus every 6 months (and carts about once a year, sometimes twice), until I purchased my first set of Ortofons 4 years ago. They lasted over 2 years (styli were pretty worn, but never had any cartridge problems at all), and I'm on my third set now (one set was stolen). I've NEVER had the problem described with a tonearm, and when I was using stanton's I remember the contacts being very small, which in turn led to alot of cartridges buring out fast (and then you have to lick the contacts, etc.). I've never had to do anything like that with any ortofons that I've used. My tables are 6-7 years old, and I've been using ortofons for 4 years, with none of the aforementioned problems... (313) Finally, My I Love Techno review...
<<>> Call me "spoiled", call me "rotten", call me "an idiot", but don't call me "late for dinner". This was our, (my wife Magda and I), third time at the more than annual "I Love Techno" festival. Our first year, we witnessed the best live PA I've ever seen (Speedy J) along with Jeff Mills, Richie Hawtin, Technasia Live, Marco Carola, G-Force, and all the yearly residents (Carl Cox, Sven Vaeth, DJ Rush). The second year, we witnessed a the festival take a very "rave" angle - as we saw American influenced rave styles and attitudes penetrate the large festival, as well as seeing acts such as: Slam Live, Chris Liebing, Umek, Richie, and the regulars. The lineup didn't look as "star-studded" (if there is such a thing in the world of Techno [techno as a subgenre of Electronic Music, not as a genre]), but looked very interesting for my wife and I, as we are followers of the hardest of techno - and acts such as: Adam Beyer, Marco Carola, Marco Bailey, Redhead, Tomaz, Filterheads live, Rino Cerrone, and Bryan Zentz live, were something we knew we'd enjoy. Organization of a 35,000 person event has got to be stressful. That being said, the first time we entered the Flanders Expo in 2000, we were most suprised at the ease of which we gained entrance, checked coats, and we able to move around. In 2001, the tides turned, and the security was backed up upon arrival, coat check was terrible (both waiting in line, and getting someone to help you), and the general policing of the rooms was uncalled for - but with all due respect, it was less than two months after September 11th, and there was still an unseasy feeling about large events flowing through everyone's minds. This year's event promised to be different than the other years, simply because the ownership of the promotion of the party had changed hands, into a corporate conglomerate (SFX) and we were unsure if that was going to have an effect. When we arrived at the Flanders Expo, we walked right up to the gate, right into the first holding area (which was set up a bit differently than in years past), and you were in a huge room that was empty (obviously for holding a ton of people inside, while waiting to be searched and for coatcheck. Coatcheck was clearly labelled, and went by in a few minutes. Searching was quick and painless, and in less than ten minutes we were inside the Flanders Expo Orange room, and ready to get the night started. Compared to an hour and a half of standing in line last year, I'd have to say I was presently suprised (again!). We first sought out Stanny Franssens (g-force), who happens to be a close friend of the person with whom we were staying, so I'm going to have to admit my biased approach to his mixing, as he's a really great guy. Track selection was superb, with a bunch of Zenit, Genetic, and Primate records (all labels that Stanny has a bunch of records on). Stanny has always had a groove about his sets, mixing hard tunes, with really groovy ones - to end up with a nice funk to his hard edged techno. If you've ever heard Stanny's production, his sets are very similar to what he produces. Due to jet-lag and some early jitters, we didn't yet get into our groove (dancing), though it was no fault of Stanny's. After Stanny (who played in the Blue Room [similar to past years, there were five rooms named after colors, all adjoined to the main room - but this year three of the colored rooms were sponsored by labels] or Cocoon room), we made our way to the Red Room (sponsored by the Belgian label "Session") to hear (appropriately enough) Redhead. I'd never seen him before, and was expecting something similar to Marco Bailey (as Redhead and Bailey team up on alot of EPs). I was really impressed. The early party jitters were easily abandoned, and the product of Belgium's Northern neighbor (use your imagination here) helped us to get our dance on. After an hour of redhead, we went off to hear Justin Berkovi (in the Blue Rooom) play a live set (which we'd really enjoyed in 2000). Berkovi's selection and deliverance really couldn't match the energy we'd felt with Redhead, so after 15 minutes we headed back into the Red Room, to catch the end of Redhead's set. If you've never seen him, he is a very short guy, and we couldn't even see him over the decks from where we were (except by way of the camera screens that were around the room showing the DJ). At this point, I began to notice the detail with which the rooms had been laid out, reminiscent of how they were in 2000 (very carefully planned, and aesthetically pleasing). In 2001, the promoters of the party had just sold the name, so the care and planning reflected that. The Red Room had about 15-20 large projection screens that were showing the DJ performing, and they were on either side of the room to the left and right of the dj. They were quite impressive, and were set at a slight angle which gave the viewer the impression that the DJ was higher up than he really was, and that the gargant

RE: [313] techasia live
There are a couple of Technasia tunes that start off with a killer electro beat and turn into nice textured techno. Here are a couple to try and listen to: "Motion" - is most likely the tune you are talking about, as it has a real Detroit feel to it, and has good strings ala Red Planet. Also try "the Declamation" - as it has an incredible buildup of crazy noises with some weird vocal noises. Technasia truly have a sound of their own. "The Force" was a big favorite around these parts, but not my favorite. "Themes from a Neon City" has an aggressive techno beat that turns into a REALLY slow Electro tune and then works back into the original fast paced techno again, and "Hydra" has a very nice tune as well. This is important for list members who don't own these DBX 12-inches to accurately make up your own mind for yourself. The origial DBX track "Phreak" has the same bleep line as the Wink track, and repeats the vocal word 'phreak' over and over on 1 bar lines, just like the Wink track. RE: [313] Mistress Barbara
She has a couple of releases on Primate and one on primevil, nothing special IMO. Her EP Sagittarius on Zync is the best of her works (for me). I think she also has a release on "relentless" (or something like that) that's rather weak. She also did some tracks for In-tec when they were doing a different tune from a different country on EPs, but the track that I have on In-tec 02 is nothing special. RE: [313] black water with vocals?
Wasn't the Blackwater with vocals the original? I have the release on 430 west by Octave One with the instrumental on one side and Ann Saunderson singing vocals on the other side. IMO - those vocals are excellent. If you're talking about a vocal that just says, "balckwater" over the background, that's very E-dancer sounding - it's actually the e-dancer remix also out on 430 west. Those vocals are pretty hairy IMO. There's also a new Octave one remix of the tune that is supposed to be the "strings" remix. Haven't heard it, but Mike Taylor was supposed to play it on his show last weekend - maybe he can shed some light. RE: [313] Carl At The Camilian
I went to see Carl, as I was up from Chicago. Synopsis: First of all, it wasn't free (as I was expecting it to be), but no biggie - $5 to see Carl Craig. When my wife and I first got there, there were hardly 20 people there and Carl was spinning some seriously old hip-hop. It was a very nice hodge-podge of songs for the first hour or hour and a half, as Carl went through old hip-hop and disco, and mixed in some jazz. It was almost like he was at home showing someone his record collection, as he would frequently stop the record in the middle of play and take it off the turntable and go and grab another record while there was silence. If someone really wanted to find a problem with Carl that could have been their gripe, but he was just having so much fun! About two hours into it, the camillian cafe was full to the gills (but it's very small - which means about 50 people were there). A few people started dancing, and it really caught on. At this point Carl was playing strictly old house tunes from the late 80's for all of his friends that had come out to chat and say hi. 80% of the people in there knew all the words to all these songs, most of which I'd only heard once or twice before, the rest I'd never even heard. Really cool mixing, really nice crowd. I'd say that most of the people in the place were at or around 30 years old - so it made for a cool atmosphere. We ended up leaving at around one, and the place was still packed, the music was still fresh, and the sandwiches were out of this world! Absolutely splendid tasting sandwiches. [313] I Love techno 6 review [LONG]
I will start by stating that I've read in a few places that this was the fifth installment, but I Distinctly remember the theme for I Love techno 2000 being "5 years 5 rooms" and I even have a shirt from last year that says that, so I'm going to refer to I Love Techno 2001 as the sixth version. My first impressions of this year's event were severe disappointment, and utter frustration - as the two MAIN reasons I came back to I love techno were opposite spectrum this year. One of the best things about last year's party (besides the amazing line-up) was the collection of people who came to see the talent, and the way that they appeared to be enjoying the music much more than coming just because its a huge party and they wanted to get messed up. This year's endeavor was a complete flip-flop, with extremely messed up people everywhere and lots of (American reminiscent) Candy-raver types with their glowsticks, plastic beads, and shiny clothes. Perhaps I just had a different view last year, or I managed to miss all the action, but I didn't pull that sort of reaction, and the people seemed to be there for support, rather than for drugs or anything else (albeit they still got down!). The second dissapointment was immediatley apparent and was the thing that kept reappearing all night - the organization and planning for all the people was poor. Last year, my wife and I left the Flanders Expo feeling like there were only 1500 people in there, when there were really 30,000+. The lines to get in last year were non-existant, the bathrooms took mere seconds to get into, the main room was only filled about 1/4 at any one time, - and the only time I felt like there were a ton of people in the place, was when only one superstar DJ was playing, and all of the people mobbed into one room. This year, they had awful planning, and I think it was partially because the organizers or promoters wanted to be really tight with the police or governing authorities. Last year, the doors had somewhat lax security and no cattle lanes which kept the line moving at all times, and it took us no more than 5 minutes to get in and check our coats. For I Love Techno 2001, it took us almost 2 hours to do the same thing, and they had cumbersomely placed movable barracades everywhere where there was a flock of people (front door, coat check, bathrooms) which only made things horribly worse. Fortunately, I'm not going to wank on about how horrid this party was compared to last year, and as a matter of fact, I'm going to tell you how itblew last year out of the water, in terms of Artist participation (does that make sense?) and overall feel. First, let me describe the size of the space. The Flanders Expo (at least the portioins they were using), has a gigantic Warehouse feel to it, with six enormous rooms flanked on to it three on each side of the rectangular "chill" area which had no music in it, just concessions and merchandise - and a VIP entry area. The main area was much larger than any warehouse I have ever been in, let alone any rave or party I've ever attended. Each room that branched off, was easily the largest party I'd ever attended being (in my sometimes distorted perception) at least larger than an american Football field for the people to dance and congregrate (but it felt like everyone in the building was dancing like mad - at all times, compared ot last year's crowd that [while severly entertained] mainly just smiled and bopped their heads). Getting from the front of one room back into the "main" area, and then on to the front (or stage) area of another room took around 30 minutes at one point in the evening - but was not too cumbersome that it was frustrating. On to the talent - I will try my best to explain what I was feeling objectively, but it's very hard to do so. There are so many things that go into a really good set or performance or even one of the rooms that they had built, and someone at the same party could have been in different rooms the entire time and possibly had a completely different experience than I had. That said, I didn't travel to Europe to have a crappy night, and I was destined to have fun - but my expectations were shattered. We arrived in time to catch Umek, but with the lines and coat check taking 2 hours - completely missed his set (much to my dismay). We headed first into the "yellow" room (each of the five performance rooms were dubbed a color, and the sixth room was were the coat check, EMS and other functional things such as the exit vestibule were setup). When we entered, it seemd like people were leaving, and Bandulu had just stopped playing a live song. Bandulu (at least two of them - I'd heard that there were 3 originally???) were just stopping in between songs, and we were able to catch 20 - 30 minutes of their set, which was really nice sounding - but the sound quality in that room wasn't the best. Re: [313]I love techno [was: ADULT. live show]
Perhaps it's a perception thing (on either side of the globe). D Hey, what this thing with Chicago peepz and I Love Techno? We had Dennis and his wife over last year, they're coming back and now also John Sokolowski and his wife are coming over for that party. I'll better refrain myself from uttering my opinion about that party... Re: [313] NIMDA Virus
Very nasty indeed. Not only through compromised websites, but through email (with attachment of "readme.exe" - that doesn't een have to be opened!) and through the unicode hole that allowed the code red worm through. Cheers. D I'll skip saying "this is off topic" but I just spent a long day on this problem and needed to share. This virus is pretty nasty since one way it infects your pc is thru compromised websites. I would recommend going to http://housecall.antivirus.com/housecall/start_corp.asp and scanning your machine. Re: [313]online record stores
I've had similar experiences with satellite - I had to wait 3 1/2 weeks for a record, and then I was overcharged (on a debit card - which cost me money for overcharged account - which was severely overcharged (not jsut $2 or something)). I have had good luck with sixeleven records 611records.com though they never tell you if they're out of a record, neither does sonicgroove (www.sonicgroove.com) - groovetech is easily the best online record retailer - as planetx (planetxusa.com) and sonicgroove start charging premiums for sought after records, and never tell if they are in stock or not (though planetx sometimes did - and they may have changed since i ordered from them 1 1/2 years ago) You can also try large record stores with online presence - gramaphone records in chicago has a deep back-catalogue of house (though I'm not sure how much is advertised online) but they only advertise records that are in-stock. You can always call them as well. Disadvantages to large record stores include sales tax, large shipping fees, and having to deal with people that don't want to be on the phone. I've also found that you must know where your online shop is, as some are in teh uk (or even germany) and you might think you're getting a good deal on imports, but you're getting charged for it in shipping. Hope this helps a bit! Cheers! Dennis no offense to anyone who may be satisfied with satellite records, but I and many other people I've talked to about them have had nothing but problems. Problems range from over charging accounts all the way down to a month or two long wait for shipment of records that should be available immediately. I've had the later happen to me the few times I did order from satellite. I would suggest trying www.planetxusa.com for any online record orders. They were one of the pioneers in online music shopping and have been around long enough to have built a solid reputation throughout the industry. I only talk highly of them because I personally, as well as a good majority of their shoppers have had nothing but solid performance by PX. just thought i'd throw in my experiences danny - Original Message - From: "Thomas Van Steen" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <313@hyperreal.org> Sent: Wednesday, September 19, 2001 8:54 AM Subject: Re: [313]online record stores > Hi, > > I do several order at Satellite Records ( http://www.satelliterecords.com ) > .. Re: [313] WTC
Very true, but there are very bad traffic jams in Chicago around the hospitals to give blood (a good sign obviously) - so media are encouraging calling to schedule a time. Re: [313] Lawrence Burden
Speaking of Lawrence Burden - anyone on that single "Blackwater" by Octave One??? That's one stellar tune right there. One side is an extremely jumping House tune, the other side is a "true detroit" instrumental with full strings. If you haven't heard it yet, check it out. Re: [313] live sets (was "new topic")
Best Live sets ever: Rob Hood @ Elysium (sp) ---It just doesn't get any better in a minimal techno live PA than Rob Hood's shows. Always entertaining, and seemingly spontaneous. Speedy J live @ I love Techno 5 ---Started with a 20 mix of electric deluxe, played something for your mind, and ended with a blasting mix of "pullover" - I couldn't walk for days. Innercity Live at DEMF 2001 ---Big fun - good life - hallaluyah -- I have chills just remembering that set. I think if someone would have been standing in front of Paris Gray they would have been blown off of the stage, she's definitely worthy of Diva status. Carl Craig @ state theater ---Very inspiring and heartfelt. Cheers! Re: [313] Richie Hawtin - DE909
From: "Jayson B." <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>:: I'd just like to mention that i find it fascinating that someone who is so very concerned with being forward thinking has obsessively used one single instrument for 10 years or so. mind you richie has done things with the 909 that not many have done. I'm not disrespecting him in ANY way, i'm just trying to see what everyone thinks about this. Without keeping something constant, you have nothing to build with. Constantly changing mediums means you'll never be doing something long enough to truely master it. Who cares if he uses the same instrument for 20 more years, as long as the inspirations are kept and the music is pushed to the limits. Cheers.
