Amp Fiddler

Hey all,

I thought this might be of interest:

"We humbly request your offerings & donations to support Detroit's own
international ambassador of funk, soul & electronic music, keyboardist,
record producer, Afro-futurist, AMP FIDDLER.

After many months in the hospital, and now at home recuperating from
surgery in August, Amp needs our resources to support his continued healing
as he journeys back to the stage.

Many have asked what is needed, or how they can assist. Your loving
generosity is appreciated at this time."

Tom Churchill

2022-12-19 Thread Mike Taylor
Hey all,

I stumbled upon Tom Churchill's YouTube channel a couple of weeks back. He
used to be a fairly regular poster to the list years ago.

He has been working in Eurorack and is doing some of the
deepest/tasteful/musical production that I've seen in that format.

It's worth checking out for the music, but also because he provides very
thoughtful explanations of his tools and working process.

It's clear that he is a really bright and talented guy.

evasive answers from anyone I've ever asked for over 30 years.

I watched NDS every single day as a latchkey kid and I still don't know who

The only rumor I've heard is that he passed relatively young in the 90's.

I've also wondered if he wasn't actually a person but a pseudonym of
whoever happened to be hired by the show to produce DJ mixes at a
particular time. I starting going out around 95 and I don't remember ever
seeing him or seeing the name on an actual flier.

Re: Summer Techno Songs

2021-07-06 Thread Mike Taylor
Hello,

I've been reading Matt Annis' excellent book, Join the Future. I've been
digging through the early bleep stuff. Some of it is still interesting, and
some isn't.

The most striking project I've discovered is Unique 3. There are some cuts
on Jus Unique that are absolutely mind blowing. Think early LFO, but done
earlier and done about ten times better.

It's almost criminal that Frequencies is hailed as the classic album in the
genre when Jus Unique is so much more interesting.

Not sure if this qualifies as summer techno, but it's the techno I've been
listening to this summer.

That's was Jan Hammer. Ban Hammer (pronounced Bahn) was Jan's cousin from
the Hungarian side of the family. He is most remembered for moving to the
San Fernando valley in the late 80's and scoring porn soundtracks using bad
general midi soundcards.

Now don't quote me on this, but I heard that Josh Cheon from Dark Entries
found a couple of boxes of Ban Hammer's lost reel to reel master tapes in
an outhouse in Malibu last month. Expect a 10LP retrospective box set that
with be ready just in time for Christmas. That's just a rumor tho, you
didn't hear it from me.

good video but a few points:

DC had already released a few 12"s by the time the CD came out. They didn't

Schommer made this in 2002 which is brilliant and never got mentioned:

That video link is broken. Is it the one of him playing with a fake
backup band of models meant to imitate the Robert Palmer "Addicted To Love"

That was wack. Especially because instead of hiring models to
unconvincingly fake playing, there are many real women who can actually
play that would add something meaningful to his live set.

(313) Anybody throwing a party in Amsterdam on Sunday?

2013-05-28 Thread Mike Taylor
Hello all,

I am doing a Disco Nihilist live PA tour in England at the moment and I am
on my way to Brussels for a party on Saturday. I was planning on playing a
party with Gerd Janson and Prins Thomas in Amsterdam on Sunday. Sadly, the
promoter bailed at the last minute. I still have to travel through
Amsterdam on Monday to make my connecting flight back to America.

I figure if I am going to be there I might as well try to squeeze a gig in.
Any leads would be appreciated. I can do events in other cities in

(313) Jason Grove

2012-03-08 Thread Mike Taylor
Hello,

Can anybody confirm/verify the identity of Jason Grove?

http://www.discogs.com/artist/Jason+Grove

*Born in Detroit, he started his career in the late 80’s,
dj-ing in underground parties when the techno house
movement was just at the beginning. He was invited few
times on detroit local stations such as WDRQ WJLB to
play. Some said he was at that time very close to the
“Wizard”, helping producing their first tracks with anthony
srock as Final Cut. He had many opportunities during the
90’s to release some of his work on various prestigious
labels, however, as the guy is really hardcore straight
edge, he prefered to continue producing only with analog
gears (don’t ever speak to him about a computer or he’ll
get mad !) record his work on cassette only, selling it
to indie stores giving it to friends for some special
events (birthday, graduation etc ... !). We heard this
story long times ago it was only when we were in L.A.
last year at pooh-bah record shop that we finally managed
to get our hands on one of those tapes (one from june 1991
the other one done in october 1992) with some of the best
incredible music we’ve heard in years, it sounded like
Kerri Chandler before Kerri Chandler did even start to
release any tracks. Those first tapes are finally available
after a hiatus of more than 15 years on vinyl only.*

So does this guy actually exist, or was he just made up to sell records on
hype? I've never seen his name come up anywhere over the years, and he
doesn't have any interviews, or photos on the web. Does anybody know this
guy?

Thanks,
Mike

 Hi all,

Has anyone ever done or heard of anyone doing the following IN DETROIT:

Physically manipulating a piece of vinyl by cutting it down the middle
exactly and then gluing it to another half of vinyl so that the
grooves match up and it can actually play? Or any other kind of
dramatic vinyl manipulation? I'm thinking of things beyond concentric
grooves, groove reversal (starting a record from the inside to play
 outward), and looped grooves.

The sound comes from a Korg rompler, likely an X5d.

If you want to do the 90's Mills thing, the formula is: 909, Yamaha
QX21, Akai S3000, EMU Carnival, Yamaha DX100, Yamaha TG33, and an

I have heard that Neil Oliverra did Sountrack313 on an X5d, and that's it.

The gear used on old Mills records and Soundtrack313 is stupid cheap
these days, the hard part is being disciplined enough to work though
the interfaces. It is a hell of a lot easier to move some colored
blocks around in a DAW.

(313) Disco Nihilist vinyl in Detroit this weekend

2010-05-27 Thread Mike Taylor
Hello all,

I am dropping a line to let folks know that you can buy Disco Nihilist
vinyl in Detroit this weekend at:

Stormy Records
13210 Michigan Avenue
Dearborn, Michigan 48126, USA
(Above Green Brain Comics)
313-581-9322

Weekend Hours:
Thursday 11-8
Friday 11-8
Saturday 11-8
Closed Sunday and Monday

They have limited quantities of all three of my releases as well as a
strong selection of used Jazz, Soul, and RB. Last time I was in there
I picked up every Motown anthology you could think of in mint
condition with all inserts for $8 a pop as well as a bunch of old Sun
Ra, Lonny Liston Smith and Herbie Hancock records. I also picked up a
bunch of disco stuff cheap as well.

I also want to let people know about a new shop carrying my music in
Detroit called Ya Digg Records in the Russell Industrial Center.

Ya Digg Records
1610 Clay Ave
#210 Bldg 2
Detroit MI 48211
313-285-9988

Weekend Hours:
Friday 12-6
Saturday 12-5
Sunday 12-5
Closed Monday

Ya Digg is a brand new spot that just opened last month. Terri McQueen
aka DJ Whodat runs that shop and has a selection of mainly used
records. I just sent her a package of records and I know Theo Parrish
has dropped a lot of product in the store as well. She has a large
used selection of house and soul records.

I would also like to mention to label owners that Terri is looking to
stock underground house and techno vinyl in the shop. She will buy
direct for cash, hit her up!

Take care,

I can't speak for UR, but I have seen some interesting things happen
with USPS when you try to ship international.

I have a promo package for CP01 that I sent to RA in Berlin that went
from Austin, Texas, to Switzerland, to Germany, to Spain, back to
Austin, and then to Portland, Maine. This trip took two months. The
only reason I know this is because I have stamps from the different
countries on the cardboard mailer. This was the second package that I
sent out, the first one just disappeared completely. This happened
twice in a row.

It costs about 17-20usd to send a package of records over to Europe
from the states. That is just the postage, it doesn't include the cost
of the merch itself. That can kill your already thin margins if you do
a lot of overseas business and lose a few packages a month.

Omar S. has the same disclaimer on his website regarding USPS shipping.

[313] Transmat Re: [313] stephen again

2002-06-04 Thread Mike Taylor

Hey Martin,

This is the second 12 in a three part series. I have had the white label of
it for awhile, but it has not fit where the show has been going lately. It
is very Stephen Brown'y, if you liked the last one you will like this one,
and if you didn't...

I also have a couple cdr's that were supposed to be the pre-release version
of Time:Space 2. After I premiered several tracks on the show, I got an
email from [EMAIL PROTECTED] saying that they want to play around with the
tracklisting a bit more and asking if I could hold off on playing any of the
material. It is a shame because there is definitely noteworthy material on
those cd's. The Rodenbush and San Soleil tracks immediately come to mind.
For the tracklisting as it was to be as of a month ago, check my playlist
at:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/currentelectronic/message/14

You can get some ideas as to what is going on in their camp from the
tracklisting. As always, Transmat will do what it wants when it wants, so
you will just have to wait and see. I remember back when the first
Time:Space comp came out back in 99 and there was a great deal of talk about
Transmat releasing full albums from all the artists involved. Obviously,
other than Deepartures In Time, none of the artists involved released albums
after that comp.

Keep your fingers crossed. I know that I am not the only person who would
like to see a lot more material come out of the Transmat camp. From what I
have been told, they have arranged a better distro deal on the continent,
and that there should be more material on the way as a result of that deal.
I hope they get it all sorted out, because Transmat has some great music
that needs to see the light of day.

Take care,
mt

[313] Mute has been bought by EMI

2002-05-11 Thread Mike Taylor

Thought some of you might be interested in this.

http://www.emigroup.com/news/pr166.html

EMI ACQUIRES MUTE

10th May 2002

LONDON, 10 MAY 2002 -- EMI Recorded Music has acquired Mute, one of Europe’s
leading independent record companies, extending an existing licensing
relationship that Mute has had with EMI’s Virgin Records for over 15 years.

Founded in London in 1978 by Daniel Miller, Mute has consistently been at
the forefront of artist development with an artist roster that includes Moby
and Depeche Mode - whose last albums sold 8 million and 2 million each
respectively - Nick Cave The Bad Seeds and Goldfrapp. The acquisition
includes Mute’s catalogue and its operations in the UK, US and Germany.

Miller, executive chairman of Mute, will continue to be responsible for all
of the company’s global activities.

Commenting on the agreement, Alain Levy, EMI Recorded Music’s chairman and
CEO said: “It’s a great sign of confidence that Daniel Miller has decided to
associate his future with EMI. Daniel is one of the most respected finders
and nurturers of talent in the industry and we’re incredibly proud to be
strengthening the relationship.”

The new agreement was initiated by EMI Recorded Music’s chairman and CEO of
Continental Europe, Emmanuel de Buretel. He said: “This deal is a natural
progression of our relationship with Mute. I believe in the independent
sector. It provides the business with an immense wealth of new talent.
It’s a source of new musical trends and an integral part of the industry’s
future.”

EMI will pay £23 million for Mute, plus up to £19 million of potential
performance-related payments, over a period of four years.

[313] Karaoke Kalk RE: [313] Andrew Pekler

2002-05-02 Thread Mike Taylor
Actually, I have been curious about Karaoke Kalk. The only release I have
from the label is Northern Classic by Donna Regina. Upon the first couple
listens I liked it, but it was more background listening rather than serious
critcal listening. When I really started paying attention to it I had
problems with the really bad English-As-Second-Language lyrics. I would have
enjoyed the album if the lyrics were not so trite.

Does this represent the label as a whole, or are there other releases I
should be looking out for instead? Where would you recommend I start?

Take care,
mt

...There is one decent track that would fit in with the first couple
Pan-American LP's.

Speaking of which, their new LP The River Made No Sound on Kranky is
*very* nice IMO. This label and Karaoke Kalk are both really doing it for
me

at the moment. Go the Ks...

[313] Harmonia Re: [313] Re: Scape One

2002-05-02 Thread Mike Taylor

Hello,

The Harmonia stuff is not that hard to track down really. I know that Music
Von is still in print in Japan. It is one of those things that comes down to
tracking down specialist retailers. You might very well pay through the
noise for bootlegs, but the audio can be obtained. A good retailer for this
stuff in Detroit is Stormy Records.

http://www.stormyrecords.com/

The Cluter material was good, but I have always had a soft spot for the
Cluster and Eno records. After The Heat is an album of weird angular
grooves. It is a very German, Tutonic rhythm if you know what I mean. There
are echos of this album in a lot of the stiff German stuff that has been
coming for the last few years. Very groovy, but not. ;) Cluster and Eno is
more atmospheric. They are both good, but very different records. I still
need to get my hands on Harmonia 76, which is Cluster, Michael Rother from
Neu! and Brian Eno.

My copy of After The Heat is a German LP on Skyy (sp Sky?) and I am not sure
if it has been reissued or not. My copy of Cluster and Eno was reissued
through Gyroscope on CD.

One of the best musical experiences of the last couple years was seeing
Roedelius play piano suites at the DIA. Very lovely soft piano music. If you
ever get the chance to see him live, it is in your best interest to do so.

Take care,
mt

Tiger Sushi - More GDM Vol 1
The Cluster track on side A is a Krautrock thing from 1974 which I
haven't

really got my teeth into yet. Side B has 'Present Pretence' from John
Tejada
which is simply superb - like a cross between his beautiful downtempo
stuff
on Defocus and his housier output. Highly recommended.

Cluster were the oddly named Moebius and Roedelius - and often Michael
Rother of Neu! and, once upon a time, Kraftwerk. That trio were also
Harmonia. Check out Harmonia's Musik Von..., Harmonia Deluxe. They're
both effin' ace but far too tough to track down. I've heard a fair bit of
really good Cluster stuff (though the fluctuating line ups of so many
interconnected bands is quite confusing) and '74 was a bit of a kosmische
creative peak.

RE: [313] demf website

2002-04-30 Thread Mike Taylor

It also helps that he is one of the hardest workers in Detroit.

From my dealings with the people who have made it or whatever you want to
call it, the thing that separates all of them is that they work very hard.
Talent will only take you so far, it all comes down to how hard you work at
it.

There are a lot of people who want to sit around, smoke dope, not return
phone calls and not work in the studio who think race is the reason they are
not blowing up. I do not care what color your skin is, your work ethic
determines where you end up. Hawtin sells more records than me for a reason,
he workers harder and smarter than I do.

Where Kharris is coming from, and where I agree with her, it that his image
is much easier to market than say Juan Atkins. It is much easier for an AR
or marketing exec to comprehend you and your weird science fiction music
when you are a skinny white dude who wears funny glasses and jump suits. The
larger music industry, in which Hawtin has an advantage, cannot comprehend
and sell an image of a middle aged black dude from Detroit making weird
electronic music from outer space. The only thing black they know how to
sell is rap music and sex jams, period.

This is where race comes into it. Because of Hawtin's skin color, he can
play on stereotypes that black artists do not have access to. In the small
indie-dance scene, I do not think color is as big of an issue. In the larger
industry, where real money is made and where culture at large is
manufactured, black artists who do not play off of black stereotypes do not
get signed. Any good Detroit Techno artist is at odds with those racial
stereotypes in the US music industry, and therefore cannot get ahead. Black
people don't make sci-fi music, they make songs about sex, greed, and
violence(unless they are conscious brothers, and then they make typical
conscious brother music...)

All of that being said, I think that if a lot of the black dudes who cry
race worked as hard and were as talented as Hawtin, they would be selling a
hell of a lot more records. The glass ceiling is definitely there, but most
dudes will never hit it because they do not have what it takes to get that
far. Juan is a perfect example of somebody who has hit that ceiling. Jeff
Mills has hit that ceiling. To avoid that ceiling Carl Craig is referencing
jazz and RB. Race had nothing to do with why some people have not gotten as
far Mr. Mills, Mr. Craig, or Mr. Atkins. I do not care what color you are,
if you have talent and tenacity, you will get ahead in this business.

Take care,
mt

ability to market himself and his music FAR surpases anyone else
in detroit.

very interesting -

how do you know that ?

what are your facts, making you say this ?

He is the only Detroit artist that I have seen lately that has had an ad in
a magazine from Detroit lately. DJT-1000 had an ad for The Last DJ on
Earth CD, but it only took up a quarter of the page from top to bottom.
Richie Hawting on the other hand has thrown his picture out and made it
recognizable with full page ads, huge posters, and stickers handed out all
over the place. He has made the m_nus symbol almost as recognizable as his
face.

there is no point in arguing it...he just knows how to market himself. he
isn't ge greatest everbut he is damn good.

Peace

[313] Andrew Pekler Re: [313] ~scape sc12

2002-04-30 Thread Mike Taylor
I got ahold of a copy Station to Station by Andrew Pekler on ~scape this
weekend. It is pretty weak for the most part; take some jazz guys, record
their jams, and hack them up in post-production. It doesn't really go
anywhere, it is just noodly cut-ups.

There is one decent track that would fit in with the first couple
Pan-American LP's. The record is not horrible, but your record money could
be better spent elsewhere.

[313] Los Hermanos Re: [313] metropolis screening in the

2002-04-23 Thread Mike Taylor

Hi,

I went to the three PM showing and I have to agree that it was an excellent
experience. While I was at the shop I picked up UR3000, Los Hermanos, and
Update. I am glad that I am not the only one who had problems with the Los
Hermanos record. One side is fine, but the other skips in a few places.
Regardless, Birth Of 3000 is going to be a hit.

I agree, all three of those records will slay the dancefloor. Despite what
some of the haters who heard the RA files on this list have said, UR 3000 is
a good record.

Take care,
mt

i am on the digest so i don't know if this has
already been discussed...but metropolis was sweet. i
have never seen the film but felt that even though the
movie was cut from 2.5 hours to 60 min, it was
complete in plot. plus having jeff mills introduce the
film and then answer questions was quite nice. the
soundtrack that jeff made finally made sense when
 added to the edited film.
the submerge building is great inside though it
still has the old laundry workers union sign on the
outside. UR had opened S.I.D. for shopping all day
and I picked up the Model 600 Update whitelabel, UR
3000, and the Los Hermanos EP. all three are
dancefloor destroyers. i prefer the B side on the UR
3000 EP but both tracks are great. the Model 600 is
almost evil electro with strong showings on all four
tracks. the Los Hermanos EP was great too, but i
think the pressing was bad. there were four or five
skips on each side where the needle would jump about
4-5 grooves. did anyone else who has this have
 similar problems?

there was talk of an after party of sorts after the
last screening. does anyone know what went on?

I spoke with one of them last week. They hired some extra hands on their
Dairy Ranch in Wisconsin, now they can leave for a weekend to play the
festival. You would be suprised at how much work it is to raise all those

[313] Down Low Records

2002-04-19 Thread Mike Taylor

Hello,

I just wanted to let people know that they should be on the look out for
some of the upcoming releases on Down Low. I received a CDr of Arne
Wineberg's next 12 and it is top notch. Arne's stuff is just deep and moody
Detroit Techno with excellent strings and percussion. It is due in August.

Also, KJ aka The Moderator has a 12 on the way as well, it is currently
available on White label. The Moderator record is more of a Detroit'y
minimal juno strings/bass line and 909 work out, an excellent mix tool. My
only disappointment is that there is a short purpose-maker style track that
should have been longer than the minute long snippet; It had the potential
to be the most driving cut on the record. This record is due in May.

Currently available is Muffler Strut from Macho Cat Garage. This mysterious
Hague-based duo have recently released a 12 on I-F's Viewlexx records. If
you are looking for VCO-based sleazy analogue grooves, Muffler Strut is a
good bet. It is very tracky, but the analogue hook is strong enough to hold
your attention.

Todas Los Noches is the new 12 by $tinkworx. Although this 12 actually
appears on Marsel Van Der Weelen's Delsin imprint I will mention it here as
well. Probably the strongest thing he/they(?) have done. If you are looking
for records on the Nu-Italio tip, this 12 is well worth looking into. for

[313] Lenny Burden on Direct Beat Records

2002-04-16 Thread Mike Taylor

(a fwd from Lenny Burden of 430west/Direct Beat)

Hello Mike,

Thanks for the forward from the 313. Please forward the following to the
list:

We have Direct Beat on hiatus at the moment. We kind of felt that we lost
direction (no pun intended) with the label, and lost the real purpose why we
started the thing in the first place. Back when we started, there were great
producers, making some great music, (much of it 'electro'), that no label in
the world was paying attention to. It did quite fit on 430 West (we tried it
with 4w-190 Aux 88 Bass Magnetic), but it needed to be heard. There was no
outlet for these people who made the music, and we also got tired of hearing
the
Detroit doesn't play techno line. We think we accomplished our goals in
re-exposing this sound, since the whole dance world is now laying claim to
it. We kick started some careers along the way, so we have some things to
feel good about. Just think, we couldn't give away our first 'electro'
record on DB (outside of Detroit), Aux 88 'Technology' is now refered to as
a classic. Who would thought it?

We have refocused our attention on our music, 'Octave One', and on 430 West
as a label. For a while there, we were we were too focused on the 'business'
and not the 'music'.

We will probably do somethings with DB in the future (never say never), but
we have no plans to repress the back catalog or release any new records
right now.

Thanks to everyone who supported the label.

-Lenny Burden

Re: [313] PROMO COPY - Not for resale

2002-04-15 Thread Mike Taylor
It also means that the label does not have to pay the artist any royalties
for the production of the unit. Also, it is a back handed way to avoid
payola accusations. The promo copy does not actually belong to you, the
label still technically owns it, they are just letting you hold onto it for
awhile. ;)

it is my understanding that promotional copies are supplied free by
the
record companies as pre-release review copies. the are given to records
ahead
of release dates so they can place advance orders. the media gets them
ahead

of

release date for review purposes.since they are supplied free the stores
arent
supposed to sell them at retail prices to the public since the store
didnt

actually *buy* them from a wholesaler. thats why they can offer them at
 discount prices.

a

promotional sample thingy, it is the full release!

But they had a box filled with the Blue 6 albums, and they were selling
them

 all.

So what is the deal here? I see this on a lot more records also. All
promotional copies, but I still have to buy them...

Thank you . . .

. . for contacting me to express your support for Internet radio. I
understand your concern about the decision of the Copyright Arbitration
Royalty Panel (CARP) to enforce royalty fees and the effect it will have
on Internet radio stations.

At this time, the Copyright Office has not accepted the proposed rates and
terms of the CARP proceeding. The current statute requires the Librarian
of Congress to accept the terms so long as they are in compliance with the
Copyright Act. A decision will be made no later that May 21, 2002.
Currently, there is no pending legislation before Congress that would
address this issue. Should related legislation come before the full

Thank you again for taking the time to make me aware of your concerns.
Please do not hesitate to contact my office again whenever I can be of
assistance to you and your family.

Re: [313] FWD: Letter from Daniel Bell

2002-04-11 Thread Mike Taylor
The issue was not sampling, the issue was reprogramming the hook(which was
the bassline and drums) and using it as the basis of another song. According
to the old interpretation, that was not actionable. Drums and Bass were not
copyrighted, just melody and lyrics.

If you record yourself playing a Beatles song on the guitar, you are not
sampling the Beatles.

even though maybe you can't sew for stealing intellectual property when it
comes to drums and baselines, you can still sew for the mechanical
rights it's a recording someone else did, you stole it... if you
program

the excact same drum pattern, nobody can do anything, but if you sample it
from somebody else's recording well you're basically a theif!

 Hello,

It was this way. It used to be that the bassline and drum pattern were
not

considered part of the song. The melody and lyrics were the only thing
recognized under the law. I have a side thread going with Phred on this,
so
I will sum them both up together. There was a group whose name escapes
me

that completely stole the drum patterns and bassline from Pump Up The
Volume
by M/A/R/R/S and 4AD took them to court. The arguement in court was
whether
or not the bassline constituted a melody. If it did, then 4AD could take
legal recourse, and if not, then they were out of luck.

Again with Ice Ice Baby, that track was pretty late in the game for
legal

challenges like that. Pump Up The Volume was out in 87, and Ice Ice Baby
was
 out in 89-90 right?

 Take care,

that (at least it used to be) you couldn't sue someone over a drum
pattern
or a bass line. Melodies and lyrics only. So if there's not much more
to

a
track than beats and bass, you put it out at your own risk. That's
not

a
song. That is, outside of electronic music, the studio is still
considered window dressing. I just doubt there's much precedent in the
law
for what would be considered engineering techniques, like the EQing of
a

 vocal sample.

Regarding the bass line issue - what about Ice Ice Baby and Under
 Pressure?

That was a law suit over a bassline and a successful one if I remember
correctly. The former track shared nothing in common with the latter
except
for an obviously ripped off bassline but there was still a lawsuit over
it.

I got a copy of this from Christiaan at RH last weekend. I played the

Speaking of Titonton, I heard he has a single on Archive Records coming
out.

 Can't wait!!

He's got one due on Rush Hour too... a nice little tune.

Speaking of Rush Hour, there's a recent live DJ set of Titonton's on their
site (www.rushhour.nl) which I haven't been able to get to work. Has anyone
else had problems with accessing their audio?

And keep an eye out for this one, out this month:

A nice noodly Detroit jazz thang :)

[313] Current 03.23.02 KLF: Chill Out Album Feature

2002-03-27 Thread Mike Taylor

Hello,

Last week we heard The KLF's 1990 ambient masterpiece Chill Out. This 12
year old album was one of the harbingers of the ambient and ambient house
movements of the early 1990's. It is said that this album was actually half
Alex Patterson from The Orb and The KLF. Regardless of who mixed it, it
remains a remarkably successful collision of found sound and electronics.
While in some ways it sounds naive after more than a decade of polished
ambient releases, it retains the charm of an album that was made by a few
geezers who were up for a laugh.

I also had some extra time last week, so I played Radio-Activity by
Kraftwerk in its entirety as well.

This week, March 30th, Current will be doing a feature on Amsterdam's Delsin
label. Delsin is an electronic soul label that features artists such as
Dimension 5, New World Aquarium, Strand, Optic Nerve, $tinkworx, CiM,
Aardvark, and Future Beat Alliance. For the second hour of the show I will
be doing a retrospective of the highlights of this excellent Dutch label.

[313] Delsin Stuff was Re: [313] Dimension 5

2002-03-26 Thread Mike Taylor

Hi James,

According to the Delsin website it should be available on the 29th of March.
I played the entire record on the show a couple months ago, and I am going
to play a good chunk of it again when I do a Delsin feature this weekend.

I am also in the middle of an interview with John Harvey/D5, I will let you
know when it hits the web.

On an unrelated note, the new Donna Regina album on Karaoke Kalk is kicking
my ass. If Nico was still alive and was working with Cologne style
electronics, it would sound like this record. A Northern Classic indeed.

Is the Dimension 5 album available yet on Delsin? I just came across the
'Control Complex' 12 recently and I really love itit has a certain
spacey x-factor that I think some of the melodic stuff I've heard has been
lacking of late. Plus I love the sound of whatever synth(s) he uses.

Subject: Internet Radio Performance Rights Fees
Date: Thu, 21 Mar 2002 11:32:37 -0500

Declan-

I thought you and other Politech readers would like to know about the
recent Copyright Arbitration Royalty Panel (CARP) decision that internet
radio Webcasters should pay performance rights fees of 0.14¢ per song
per listener for Internet-only Webcasters, 0.07¢ per song per listener for
broadcast radio simulcasts, and 0.02¢ per song per listener for
non-commercial radio simulcasts. This is more than 100% of most
Webcasters' gross revenues, including the revenues on my tiny (10
listener max) station www.ulyssesaudio.com. I maintain the station for
free, with no advertising or revenue source of any kind. This will
effectively shut down mine and most other independent internet radio
stations.

In perspective, with my max listenership (12 songs/hour x 10 listeners max
X 24 hours/day x 365 days/year x 0.14¢) that equals more than $122,000 per
year. Remember when I said I had no revenue sources?

Many Webcasters had hoped that the CARP's recommended royalty rate would be
based between 3% (proposed by webcasters, in line with ASCAP, BMI, etc.
composer royalty fees) and 15% (RIAA proposal to webcasters).

Note that this is ALL based on the DMCA demand that performers be
compensated for perfect digital copies. However, that reasoning is flawed
since most internet radio isn't copied, merely streamed, and the broadcast
is usually much lower quality than perfect.

Check out www.saveinternetradio.org for more information. Thanks for your
time.

Subject: net.radio: CARP comment period extended to April 5

Declan,

You and politechers may be aware that the Copyright Arbitration Royalty
Panel handed down some extremely complex and onerous constrains on the use
of music on the net by webcasters and by on-air stations doing simulcasts.

Basically webcasters are dead by being priced out of the market, being
required to do complex recordkeeping at the song and listener level,
having programming restrictions placed on the content that are far more
constraining than on-air and more. Fees will be collected and distributed
by the RIAA, even for non-RIAA members, after a 'reasonable management
fee' has been taken by that organization. All of this is retroactive to
1998.

Low revenue non-commercial community on-air stations doing simulcasts
(ibiblio.org serves 4 of these at the moment - WXYC, first internet
simulcast station; WCPE, 7/24 classical; WUNC, regional NPR; WXDU, Duke's
college radio) are also killed -- unless they are Center for Public
Broadcasting members; CPD has cut a separate deal (in our case this covers
only WCPE).

The case for non-commercial community stations doing simulcasts are
covered well at http://www.ruf.rice.edu/~willr/cb/sos/ and at
http://www.wxyc.org/sos.html

The case for webcasters is made at http://www.save-the-music.org/ and
http://saveinternetradio.org/

No one is against artists or copyright holders being paid. The complaint
is that the combinations of a high minimum fee, complex -- and invasive in
the case of individual listener data -- reporting, and content
restrictions. Kill the young and delightfully diverse pratice of
net.radio.

http://www.loc.gov/copyright/carp/webcasting_rates.html is the CARP
webcasting proposal

http://www.loc.gov/copyright/fedreg/2002/67fr10652.html is the notice in
the Federal Register that the comment period has been extended.

Re: [313] vladislav delay?

2002-03-23 Thread Mike Taylor
I think it is just an anagram. However, Vladislav Delay (I cannot remember
his name off hand) is a jazz drummer. So I would not consider it completely
unlikely that he was aware of the track when he named the piece.

BTW, was anybody else seriously dissapointed by this release? This
performance is definitely not entain quality. It is basically his girlfriend
talking for an hour with some VD textures and such coming in and out every
so often. The vocals were kind of interesting for about 5 minutes or so, and
then it just became very samey for me. It just seemed like it could have
been a lot more than it was.

The ARS festival write-up was very interesting though. I wish Detroit were
cultually forward enough to string up a bunch of speakers around downtown
and have people create music for the space once a year. The DEMF seems very
backwards compared to a cultural project like that.

[313] Rock To The Beat[313] TECHNO 2: The Next Generation

2002-03-12 Thread Mike Taylor
This Is New Beat was also available on Vinyl. I bought it used at recordtime
out of curiosity about 18 months ago. Nothing particularly interesting,
except for the fact the Renaat of RS fame was actually behind that comp in
a pre-RS guise.

I cannot tell you the label, as I got rid of the record in one of my
goodbye 1990's record purges awhile back. The record really has no value
outside of trivia.

101's Rock to the Beat was on This is the New Beat (can't remember the
label - the tape is long-since lost), and I think it was just a cassette/CD
release??? This very well may have been the Subway records release. I
haven't seen my copy in at least 10 year though, so my details may be off a
bit.

[313] Neil Rushton [313] TECHNO 2: The Next Generation

2002-03-12 Thread Mike Taylor

Hello,

Neil is still in the music business. His latest accomplishment was getting
Blackwater by Octave One licenced to Concept Records and helping it hit #2
in the UK.

Take care,
mt

Also, this compilation was compiled by Neil Rushton. But what is he up to
these days? Is he still in the music biz?

i thought so, he did 'six to six' after that, next to some irregular
network repressings. nowadays - not clear to me
