to switch off the lightsabre (otherwise you might hurt yourself

also people might think you´re into some kind of glowsticks-business

- experienced both last, week when luke was in town for a gig

I would be lax if I failed to mention the (don't cringe) Ixos Ministry
of Sound DJ1001. I picked a pair up a couple of months ago and have
been really happy with them. The best part is that they don't crush
your ear against your head like the Sony ones will and they have a
stereo/mono switch that is great for mixing. www.ixos.co.uk Mind you,
I dumped my MDR-V700DJs for these.

 1. techno appears the first time an individual associated with detroit
techno comes out with an album. one of the big three in this case.

öhem, in this detail-case I disagree with you:

techno - was not only invented in da D

Take YMO -

25 Sep 1979 SOLID STATE SURVIVOR

1st track - technopolis

25 Oct 1979 - Technopolis 7inch

Technopolis is a mixed word - techno and metropolis

but just one example -

the whole complex -

futuristic thoughts incl. the aspect of technology making

futuristic art using modern technology - is old

And I´m quite sure it was there in the golden age of Nubia -

But - Juan Atkins way to work with this this

collective cultural matter was awesome and what happened then

and why there is this list -

it´s a big amount of aspects which created the special D-Techno

- Juan Atkins is like the father of this phenomenan

hm -

yep germsmoney has got it´s goods and bads -

there are some good people out there in mainstream and underground

supporting music they really listen too and support when they like it -

- but I would think, this is about the same in other countries in euope -

4.e.: ewokland - when New Order, MARRS, etc... showed up,

it´s possible to go number one with dancetunes - with an underground flavour

and an independent background - but don´t want to go all positive -

main thing - there are some gaps in the systems for independents

out there everywhere - and when I remember correct:

Octave One did target to make it outside the underground-ghetto

with this track - and it´s great to see it seems to work out somehow -

2 be honest - first time I heard the vocal version of black water -

I thought it would sound too overproduced, too catchy

other people on this list seemed to think this too

but then after listening again -

I think it´´s one of the very best tunes that came out last years

-

on a different note - anyone heard of this big Harry Belafonte CD-project

- a compilation about the roots of modern music -

BMG did take out the release after half a year -

- anyone got a copy out there or could tell me where I could get it ?

Techno nearly number number one?!? It could only happen in Germany! Remember
 also 'The Prince Of Techno'?

...And I weren't no Dr Albarn neither he said with pride, a few years
 later. And he was right!

It may be a lot of other things (good not so good), but it's still seems
*the* place for wide appreciation of electronic music. Would you agree

Re: [313] Religious Major Producers

2002-09-16 Thread Neontsetse

many major artists sign contracts where they give away too much

control about their art -

they do this for money (needed or greeded ?),

for bigger possibilities in production and for fame ...

- but - they give away the control for money -

many simulate they didn´t - (the big art of entertainment :))

most video´s, promotionstuff etc.. and even much art is not made

or controlled by the artists, no matter how nice they are -

many ideas of presentation are some media-constructions

regulated by some heads in the background -

you talk about Nelly and major artists, as if they would

be the heads of the media-construction and music we hear

but most are just very very talented muppet-entertainers

- tuning their mind into what they are supposed to do for selling -

and even many conscious messages and the conscious clischees

are getting used in this system as strategies for credibility

for making bucks -

- and at the same time:

yes, not every major-contract is a robot-contract

and some indie´s are just about the same as majors -

but all in all - indie´s don´t make those amounts of money

and they don´t have such a media-control for mass-manipulation -

... but I did like hot in HER 2 :)

I actually see where you're coming from and I have debates like this with
friends often. I believe most people are contradictory, I know I am! I try
not to be, but... I can be vain and neurotic and impressionable yet I should
know better! You could be an underground producer articulating radical ideas

and still (secretly) love designer clothes and girls and cars! I forgive
that as I have the same impulses. Nelly is young and I think most young
people are especially contradictory. I always think how Malcolm X grew as a
man - where was he in his youth? I think the most contradictory rapper out
there after Tupac is Nas - one minute he's Nasty Nas, the ill MC, the next
Nas Escobar, a playa rapper, and part of The Firm. A lot of hip-hoppers
never forgave him for 'selling out' after Illmatic. Yet, correct me if I am
wrong, but he is the only mainstream MC to question the current US foreign
policy on his latest album. On his last album there was a song which sampled
Toto's Africa and spoke of the way in which some young Black men in the US
aspire to rock jewels that are mined in Africa by exploited Africans - it
was a very commercial RB beat but the content was very conscious. Also,
unlike myself, Nelly has not had the opportunity to attend college and read
and learn and be exposed to a range of information and ideas in concentrated
form (most of my higher education was paid by the government too!), but I
feel he has the openness to learn and grow and he will. A lot of my friends
used to call Wyclef Jean a sell-out but I said, as a Haitian-American he has
broken through barriers by setting up companies and negotiating with
multi-nationals and using his success as a platform to share his cultural
experiences and address the prejudices experienced by Haitian Americans. So
for all the contradictions, there are some positives. It's hard for the
dispossessed and marginalised to relate to a post-capitalist mentality when
they have in fact never been a part of capitalism itself, so I think this is
 a phase.
I guess the real fault lies with US radio - if it played Nelly, then
Jurassic 5, then UR, young people would be exposed to a range of ideas and
possibilities and it would break down stereotypes. Maybe Nelly's music per
se is not as inspirational as some others, but within the context of his
career, him coming from a broken home, and experiencing a lot of instability
in his early life to go on to build up companies, employ friends, there are
 some positives.

2002-08-13 Thread Neontsetse

Please distribute to raise awareness and support of this important
Artists' Rights and Cultural Hegemony issue!

-James Newton loses to Beastie Boys: Amicus

  support requested! URGENT
(This story can found at http://www.jazzhouse.org/lobby.html)

From: James Newton (renowned jazz musician) --

For the last two years I have been involved in a suit because
the Beastie Boys sampled a part of my composition Choir and did not
contact me for permission. They did not change in any way what they
sampled from Choir. It begins with the sampled six and a half
seconds and loops in the song over forty times. Pass the Mic' has
appeared in CD, MP3, LP, and DVD formats.

The law clearly states that to use someone else's music one
must contact and receive permission from both the record company and
the copyright owner.Choir was registered with the copyright office
and ASCAP in 1978. My publishing company JANEW MUSIC controls 100% of
the rights. The Beastie Boys contacted and received permission from
ECM Records, which released my album Axum which they sampled in 1992,
  and ignored me.

The case went up for summary judgement one month ago and Judge
Nora Manella of US Federal Court ruled against me!!! She
stated as a fact of law that my music was not original! The six and a
half second sample consists of three sung notes C,Db, C and a held
flute harmonic C2, as a result of the combination of voice, harmonic
and a balanced distribution of each a series of shifting multiphonics
are created. The judge ignored the multiphonics because they weren't
written on the score and said that there are just three notes in the
score which aren't protectable. If you go to the Beastie Boy's DVD of
the piece Pass the Mic to signify the song there is only my flute
sample and a drum beat. The judge consistently used European paradigms
to judge my music. An aria from Purcell's Dido and Aeneas and Cole
Porter's Night and Day were examples of what is protectable. Choir
is about four black women singing in a church in rural Arkansas. This
work is a modern approach to a spiritual. As you well know, one would
be hard-pressed to find multiphonic fingerings in most jazz scores,
even when multiphonics are used If I'm writing for a classical
ensemble I'll write out the multiphonic fingerings because of how
notation is used in that culture of music.

The urgency of this letter is that after unjustly winning the
case the Beastie Boys have filed a motion with the court for me to pay
their legal fees of $492,000 after they stole my music. I have already
spent a considerable amount of money for a creative musician and

did like the short set and selection of Hannah at the DEMF 2000 a lot

that was very soulfull - wind parade etc..

together with moodyman I liked this the most -

Words from the man himself :
I never saw a piece of electronic gear that I didn't want to take
apart. That's what sparked my interest in electronic music. The music of
Kraftwerk and Tangerine Dream are subtractive compositions -- just like the
individual sounds in the composition are created with subtractive
 synthesis.
Born in Detroit, Martin Bonds was recruited by Juan Atkins, after he
heard a demo of a song called Aftermath. Shortly after, he produced tracks
for Juan Atkins, Kevin Saunderson and Inner City. For few years, Martin
stopped studio work to get married and have two children. Since his children
are now approaching school age, he found time to get back to 'dissecting'
more sounds in his home studio.

 The man sounds really discret...

as Metro Area, Luomo ... seemed to be including into their work lately)

- the music-magazine tigersushi is an interesting informative page bout

various music-movements and backgrounds -

and it got some very interesting article bout Submerge-UR-Detroit lately

- complicated and to be honest:

I don´t understand all what is said by now and so I have no opinion.

To bring this back around to make it more thislisty there are a couple of

Re: [313] detroit quality

2002-04-30 Thread Neontsetse

thanks for the info bout URB

50/50 quote is very positive to me and gives hope -

There are a lot of people who want to sit around, smoke dope, not return
phone calls and not work in the studio who think race is the reason they are
not blowing up. I do not care what color your skin is, your work ethic
determines where you end up. Hawtin sells more records than me for a reason,
he workers harder and smarter than I do.

- this again is also supporting old stereotypes - did you realize that ?

my experience is this:

any deals, interviews etc.. with Detroit artists I was involved in

were transacted on a professional level and including high quality results -

I can imagine some artists are not like this, as many artists are anywhere

but better think of the big amount of serious hard working Detroit artists

Richie is one of them -

one of many

and beside that - what do you think about...

when the Burden Brothers did put money into submerge for supporting it ?

when Mike Banks just built up the new submerge-house with others ?

when three chairs tour is supporting various artists, not only single egos ?

when some artists don´t join the DEMF to stay loyal to Carl ?

when SOS is putting power into suporting Techno on Detroit-radio ?

...

all this is about work ! and sharing powers - basics for the community

the philosphy: Richie is the far most ...

is only showing how some expectations of a normal hierarchic mind -

using some popularity constructions of Pop-Media

to proove the vision of the superior man

you decide

listen, would like to go easy
but I don´t know the deepest motivation,
and it ain´t the first time you did mention Juan Atkins
the way this forward goes - IS disrespectfull -too far gone
I was told to hold back with my assumptions
I will, but some things are almost getting surreal

and the vast majority of that stuff was between 85-90 (approx: 15 years).

15 years ?

Metroplex 99 Aaron Carl - Down

Chaos - Dot Dot Cash

  Mark Taylor - Silicon Alley

R+S 99 Model 500 - Mind and Body

when I remember correct, Juan Atkins is working on new music too
I hope you´re not going to list the artists now to put them against him
why don´t you stick to them you love instead of attacking them you don´t

so anyway - theese records are out there for about 3 - 4 years
that´s a completely different number then 15 years
I think remembering you work as a journalist for Urb ? good night

I mean we read this article where Juan was bitching that he took like 2,000 a
show and Oakenfold took 1 million for the tour, and how that he's
white=rascism=trance whatever. Obviously Juan has to get a new booking agent
or realize if you don't do anything musically for almost a decade, that
people won't know you across the country, and 2,000 is a lot to play records
in that case. I mean he was counting the Ford ad where they use his music as
a recent accomplishment, an ad company using his music isn't something he did
as recent. They referred to him playing at the DEMF, that was rained just
into his set, he was only up there a bit. I think he needs to get his head
out of his ass. There are soo many better Detroit DJ's that are actually
working their sets, and pushing new sounds, but it's hard to get any where
out of Detroit when you have these leaches sucking the life blood out of the
Detroit name. Internationally they think that's the Detroit, when it's funny
we really don't listen to them all that much here.

And if you don't mind reposting this to the group 313 board I'd appreciate
it, that function is disabled for some reason.

The fact that they don't do it for techno... *shrug*... Their loss. It
gives us the chance to do it our way. And the fact that we've succeeded

making highest quality music

making it happen, though no one

would have seen this happen when it started

how business works or should work

Mojo and Detroit ? - did this cross with techno back in the dayz ? - and how
?

was there a deeper idea of movement and what was it, if )

anyway, I also remember some disses here in the past bout hip hop

-tsss

who´s ready 4 dissing hip hop ? and what are the reasons?

hey, no one did see all the detail mistakes I done b4 ? - interesting :D

but also wanted to take the chance

They´ve been a mix of housyness, rap, electro etc...

another question would be -

Detroit-techno influences on current - RnB - so much great music happening

- are there any official quotes on that or interviews?

are there more detroit-techno producers doing tracks

Re: [313] can't we all just get along?

2002-02-19 Thread neontsetse

race has been talked into the fuggin ground as well, because yes it is a
very essential and important subject. i'm not sure what is being argued
here. actually, i see nothing being said at all, aside from some quotes
from
mainstream hiphop.. yes there is racism inherent in all societies and it
is
deeply entrenched in techno. and?? digging deeper..?? what are the
issues being discussed, i missed something

ok, you want to know, what the issues were before ?

the main issues still are, that there are big race-problems in the US,

(also on the whole globe) and the problems get reflected in some of
313-music,

in titles, lyrics, samples, artwork, in interviews -

but many people do ignore those messages, that artists do make

to be heard - to communicate -

- I got some mails here by some of the people with great taste

(being writers, making music-pages, etc) saying that they just don´t care,

what the messages are like -

Also many reactions in the past showed up that many people

do not agree at all that a strong fundament of 313-techno-music is based

on black-culture and so they tried to proove that this is not true by

highlighting many influences of white musicians in the world of music

Then, also some people showed up they felt offended when it was about

blackness, black artists black music etc... for various reasons ...

some called it boring, crap

some seemed to have a good motivation, that they don´t want to make any

differences, based on the colour of the skin

but I think it needs sometimes people to explain the messages to them

that this is not the way the world order* keeps going on in reality -

(* world order incl. about 50 % black soldiers in the us-army ?

/correct me, damn me, if I am posting wrong numbers/

over 80 % of the killed soldiers in Vietnam were black ?

- just another xample - put this into the relation of how

many black people are locked in prison and how many

black people are dying in the streets every day in the US)

- theese were some of the main issues I think that have been

discussed here, but not at all in a way that you could say -

it´s all clear now -

also J.T., I think it´s good when the people do bring themselves

and their history intoo the frame, their own perspectives and experiences

about myself - I feel that my english and knowledge actually

wouldn´t be good enough to to enter this discussion,

but I did feel the need to speak up, cauze some people

somehow keep trying to wipe out those issues from the list -

I do know it´s a heavy case and I can´t sleep, work and

stop thinking about it as soon as I concentrate on it myself...

- when I talk with some black friends about this ...

(just imagine, it could only be one word that would seperate us 4 ever)

- when I wonder how much they can take, when I see the ignorant reactions

- when I remember how some storys about intelligence tests, spreaded by

respectabled university professors used to make me believe black people

wouldn´t be as intelligent as white people, when I was a teenager

- when there was the biggest nazi-demonstration since the end

of the second world war, marching through Berlin last year

- I worry, when I put postings about this subject on the list, because

I think I might be doing some harm to 313-culture cauze of talking shit -

- and on and on - I do know it´s a heavy case -

- but I was told, my worries ain´t a tiny bit as heavy, as it is to

be black and living in Oakland, Brooklyn etc... or some areas in DETROIT

Re: [313] can't we all just get along?

2002-02-18 Thread neontsetse
You don#8217;t have to be an academic to know that the civil-rights
movement of the 1950s and #8217;60s is one of the most deeply complicated
chapters in American history. Likewise, you need only a passing knowledge
of
this chapter to know that black music provided a crucial ROLE blocked by
the governement, the establishment, the institutional economy, the media,
and so on since then. But to take on the daunting task of definitively
contextualizing the relationship between these two movements, you#8217;d
likely have to be an academic and sadist.

I still don´t understand the conclusion - We shall stop talking about the

too heavy too complicated subject ?

I thought we want to talk and learn about 313-music and art, right ?

So when we hear and read that there are also black-related subjects in the
music, in artwork,

in lyrics and in interviews, I would think this is quite a good place to
talk and learn about

some of the background of this art - and so I will repeat this here -

Just take a title of a record like - Ebonics - by Theo Parrish -

the subject is in the title - you can hear the vocal-samples directly
dedicated to the subject

Now just count the postings done here about record-numbers and id´s of Mr.
Parrish´s records

and mixes (which is great) - but now put this amount against the number of
people talking

about the record-titles, the meanings of his art some including black
related subjects-

you come up with a number 100:0 = 100-mixes vs 0-messages ?

now have you ever heard of a simple phenomenon called silent majority ?

no no, not us here ?? - preaching to the converted ?

how should I know, when I see the majority relation about 100:0

I would like to talk about the black messages in the art - to learn and
understand -

because some music in music-culture is also connected with sending
information with teaching

and communication in various ways - I would like to understand more -

4 some understanding it´s good to communicate -

and this is what this list is made 4 - to chat and learn about the music and
art

some artists have a focus on non-messages - want the music to speak without
words -

others mix the music with other things and thoughts that move them -

but all the people pushing the black messages into the racistic corner,

by calling it off-topic, too heavy or too academic to talk about it,

or keep preaching on it´s only music

are making the debate very strange and this avoids getting closer to the art
-

this won´t help in the deeper understanding of much music-art coming from
Detroit

- still thanx 4 the books -

Re: [313] Juan Atkins - then having a break

2002-02-03 Thread neontsetse
Is that the reason you mis-spelt his first name throughout your post? The
thing is, many unprincipled journalists have made a dark artform out of
taking the comments of those whom they interview provocatively twisting
their words to suit an agenda. Usually, that agenda is to stir s**t up
with little regard for the consequences, especially whether it could
reflect negatively on the person kind enough to speak to them in the first
 place.

this happens and is horrible -

might be some details got mixed -

but - me myself, I´m also doing interviews 4 quite some time

and I do take care that the things said are not getting cutted and changed

or highlighted in a way that the meaning get´s changed

and let me tell you -

there are so many many statements like that said by black artists and you
know it

they become more relevant with every step when people deny

or don´t react to them - I posted some others b4 -

You want to hear some statements from Theo Parrish about it ?

You did read John´s interviews with Suburban Knight, Robert Hood too ?

http://www.undergroundcommittee.com

WHY do you feel the need to suggest especially THIS information is wrong ?

and WHY the hell you think it should be harming his career ?

Because you do agree with them people,

who don´t want to hear what´s a big part of what´s happening ?

Should Juan Atkins take care about them holding the blanket for the real
racists by

being ignorant easy and on the other hand being whiny, weak and fearing
people ?

You want him to shut up that there are problems ?

You want him to be the black friendly business entertainer who LOVES
especially

white people on the planet, because you identify yourself with being white
?

You want him to shut up ?

Why don´t you try to understand why he might be right ?

This list is full of people in quite good easy jobs, even some with
powerful

positions - so We are the people, who are a part of the problem -

If WE would take care WE would be less a part of it...

many on the list are making music too -

now the question is: why are we/they on a 313-list ?

What´s the reason behind, if so many feel the need to deny this background

of the music ?

Is it because it´s the vibe, that isn´t easy and doesn´t feed the ego or the

hunger 4 entertainment only ?

Is it because people want a good world and can´t deal with them saying it´s
not ?

Is it because the own role and identity is getting questioned this way ?

Is it because of being scared there ain´t no way to participate or to be a
part of this
?

is it, is it, is it ?

or now is it ---

because some are ready to TAKE OVER - the control -?

that´s xactly what Juan said - and it just seems to be like this -

Yes, there was Mojo, New wave, independent and white influences etc.. -

Yes, not every thing is a question of black and white, it is not only about
this -

Yes, it´s about music and music for the people -

but then you need to show up you are people

people - come out and keep talking about this

till the respect RISES back to them why there´s such a thing as the 313-list
--

pay them back with showing up that you know it you are there to understand
and

connect -

I will shut up 4 some time -

WE COULD BE SO MUCH MORE

I'm hoping someone will invent a button that says Ignore completely
because the Delete function just doesn't quite seem to cover this drivel

what is it ? it´s no subject ? but YOU telling me about Theo Parrishs record

and you wouldn´t like to buy it - that is something that needs to be said to
me ?

what´s the reason in telling that anybody ? what does your comment mean ?

and one more 4 them who didn´t read it - Juan Atkins talks about the

race-probems in music-culture on http://www.xlr8r.com/

lil take:

America still has a lot of [racial] barriers, says Atkins. There's still
a lot of racism
here. [I don’t believe] that the music industry is any different than any
other
industry when you've got seventy or eighty percent white people running it.
You're
gonna have race issues even if they're unintentional. [It’s like] what
happened with
Chuck Berry and Little Richard in the beginning of rock 'n' roll. Eventually
[their
accomplishments were] recognized, though Little Richard’s [veneration came]
pretty
late. Elvis is still bigger than all of them will ever be.

I think blacks are about to be excluded from dance like they were excluded
from
rock 'n' roll. It's not that [the industry and labels] are going to
physically do it, [but
they will] take so much soul out of it that blacks are not going to want to
get into it.
And that's [how] trance is [sounding] right now. It has no life, no soul.

the records I mentioned are some 313-techno to house-basic-records

so the posting was also about techno

what do you want to chat about ?

you wanna talk with others what is good and not all day long

without being able to say what it is that makes you think it´s good ?

what is banging and not ? - why some Dj´s kick you and others don´t

how people should better entertain_oops_educate the kiddies

you want to know about techno you need to move closer to the subject

other alternative always is - we stop talking and just feel, dance, listen,

dear list-people,

thanx 4 sending me many comments of-list -

What I was trying to say and I said that many times be4,

that I think, it´s important to reflect the 313-culture on a higher level -

Me, myself I am not the best one to do this becauze of the language problem

but mainly becauze I know there are people here with a much stronger
background -

But if we only move the titles around and not stepping into the things
behind the art,

we act respectless, as we are ignorant, as we don´t listen, don´t care -

let me come up with nu questions -

What do you know about influences of groups like Nucleus ?

Why are UR calling themselves souldiers ?

Why do you think are 4 Hero currently highlighting the aspect their music is

Juan Atkins ...

yes yes, various attitudes and messages included -

but that´s just one more reason to talk about it ...

If you want to talk about Drum Bass ,,,maybe you should talk

mentioning 4hero - them from the paralell universe of 313

doesn´t mean th whole mail was about d+b, as their music is somewhere else -

the culture is a construction based on the things we got planted inside :D

and the things we choose ourself..

the idea of a nation is the most negative methaphysical construction I can
think off -

but it is a methapysical idea that became reality long time ago -

people have feet to walk over the land, built machines to drive, swim and
fly -

but people are regulated by the idea of territory

I have two passports 4 real and I can enter other territorys

different then people coming from Africa -

I have much better chances to make an easy living -

[313] ain´t no Ewoks - this is getting serious

2002-01-30 Thread neontsetse
Swayzak - they are not Ewoks ?

I thought they would be from London - Ewokland -

I´m very sorry (Scottish people ain´t no Ewkos)

and though some friend just sent me whip the Ewoks

I´m gonna stop the joking now,

as there also was some serious thought behind this silly stuff -

let me xplain - it´s gonna get 313-related and it´s gonna get heavy -

- me myself - I am half-ewok and half of a germ -

nationality to me is a damned metaphysical construction,

but the world is built on this, so it´s a reality I have to face

in this reality England and Germany and some other Nations as France,

the USA cauzed and still cauze so much horror in the line of history -

theese Nations repressed and killed countless people and culturez,

other national constructionz and move them around on the big plate,

they fight all the time various dirty games for the structures of world
order -

- Ghetto-reality, Palestine, Isreal (a part in a game too), Nigeria, Ireland
etc..

cauze of that

- many people in Detroit still live under bad circumstances -

cauze of that

- the biggest continent Africa, the major source - is kept in a mess

cauze of that

now -

all music we hear nowadays is connected to the history line -

music always is (transformed by artists) -

if there´s Kraftwerks idea of creating tribal music,

if it´s about the rolling stones stealing from blues-artists,

the rock´n roll robbery by elvis etc...

if it´s about the alien-thing by many black artists as sun ra, george
clinton, 4hero

This list is about the 313-construction

It was started cauze of techno-music coming from Detroit

Most artists are black artists who created this music,

now the views of many people about this music are coming from various
perspectives,

but why is it that it happens that people highlight certain european and
white

musical influences, even more then the historical afro-american background
of it ?

I feel the amount of theese influences mentioned here is not in the right

relation to the main basis and main source of much of the music -

this shows a picture, that is changing the meaning

the Ewok-joke was a silly inspiration to question the way

of understanding music the English do, which also does have

it´s certain tradition in the line of history... (highlighting the
pop-aspect)

See, I don´t want to be over- preachy

and I feel much love 4 this house is our house-vision,

and am so gratefull this door is still opened by artists

though the shit keeps happening all the time -

but I think we all do have the responsibility

to take care ... much more care ...

and that means to enjoy the music and the party of course,

to enjoy it 100 %,

but as long as I feel things are getting pulled into a certain direction,

that seems to be a part of stealing or redefining the 313-culture

in a classical colonial tradition,

there will be those wrong spelled grammar f***ing preachy mails,

and understand,

when I´m doing the same kind of mistakes

please tell me and teach me -

shoutz

much of 313-music is full of things to talk about

What do you know about the meaning of certain drum patterns ?

The meaning of african culture in music (and techno music) and how

it developes through the circumstances the dominating nations create on the

What is it that makes you move - beside banging beats or that it´s hot ?

Re: [313] every dog vol 3

2002-01-10 Thread neontsetse
btw, imho it seems like Mills writes his sleevenotes in German or perhaps
French and then uses Babelfish to translate them into English. anyone
else
 think this is likely?

Maybe that´s the reason why I do understand it :D

but more serious also to Stephen -

(with most respect 4 your great passion and work on 2playa)

I think it´s important to discuss all the art and ideas

connected to the music too - if you talk about music

and it´s very important not to isolate the music from the

way the musicians want it to be presented,

the context they present themselves in -

Otherwise you come to that one philosophy:

It´s only the music, that counts (which is simular 2 it´s only music)

Yes, that is the philosophy for some artists

but for some others, it´s NOT only about that -

For some artists - the messages and emotional edits they put into their work

by using special artwork and words is very important too -

otherwise it would all be about white nameless labels -

without any words - which would interesting too - but it ain´t like that

I do even miss more (respectfull) discussions here sometimes about the

meanings of words and the artwork connected to the music -

But I can never agree with people taking that out -

isolating ideas, messages, when they are there -

and to dig a lil deeper - older 313-debates -

it sometimes seemed to me, that some people

don´t want to hear messages - especially,

when it´s about the struggle of my people (Mike Grant)

- kind of messages -

it´s a shame 4 every one, but a crime 4 any white man

to force to ignore messages like that -

cauze that´s a part of the big problems on this planet

[313] RE: every dog has it´s day

2002-01-09 Thread neontsetse
Mills made some great art many people here posting on the list

would never ever !!! been able to make,.

One reason why they couldn´t make it,

is that they always do know what things should be like.

Why shouldn´t Jeff Mills write down the things he wants to be connected to
his music

in the way he wants it to be written -

yes - we want to talk about the ideas and visions we do have too here,

and we like to talk about the Detroit-music and art, the things we love ...

but please, let´s be more respectfull to the vision of the people, who are
creating it

especially to the artists, who are not in the mainstream-arena

If they connect their art to anything, it might be a part of them who are
making that music

don´t break it upart, as long you ain´t sure it get´s done for commercial
reasons

if you say it´s completely unneccesary that´s your vision how things
should be

but don´t always tell, as if that´s the only way things should be like

just read some of your comments again and think about it -

i am really like the music mills but it got nothing to do with that.

I personally think mills is being a bullshit artist because his writings
sound a lot like your average guy trying to project intelligence through
 abstract CD liner rantings.

Am I the only one who gets slightly irritated by people thanking God for
their musical abilities? It's completely unnecessary. Besides, what the
lord giveth, the lord taketh away.

 Makes no sense whatsoever.
Unfortunately Mills influenced a whole generation of producers to put this
sort of gibberish on the back of their album sleeves.

hire a copywriter, and then you just get *insincere* whimsical stoned
nonsense. (please see backs of countless '60's psychedelic-era albums
with 'hip' notes from the band's manager etc.)

The majority of e-mails here is far away from being too negative for me.

I don´t have to cry all day long and am not having scary dreams at night

but : TO BE EXPECTED to be ONLY positive is VERY disturbing -

Listening to Detroit-music it doesn´t sound to me only

like a whistling tune from and for the jogging-route of life -

(and some might know jogging is not the exact same as dancing either)

and - of course there should be love out there -

Re: [313] curious?

2001-07-19 Thread neontsetse
yeah -

kept wachin the list -

like very much of the latest discussions -

The only thing I may disagree with is people insulting others. We all
have
different opinions and perspectives. Let's keep it that way and try not
to
impose our beliefs on others and trying to make people feel dumb.

this is a thin line and giving this thought the priotity
can´t help in all situations

I think it´s normal thing -when you have a opposite opinion
to write so - and this might offend people

I have a provocative example here, only to show you when
your idea doesn´t bring any solution

when you do have someone with a dumb idea sitting infront of you -
what are you gonna do ? let´s say for example some nazi ?
Will you say - hey, my opinion is - we´re all brothers on this planet -
But you´re au right with your way of thinking ?

Will you offend the one, who´s offending him ?

I used to offend everybody and was of course meaning myself

some time ago on the list -

Thinking about this - maybe it was polarising -

on the other side it´s obvious: When it comes to more political things
and ideas of responsabilitys, leaving the consumers point,
for some reasons some people on the list try to stop it straight away
Cause they don´t want to hear any other opinions -

I think compared to the massive amount of:
Did you see Richie walking down the road ? I think he was buying
some Phil Collins Remixes I don´t want to understand that and
think this too strong fanism is getting no one no where -

What I do like here for example is, when Mr Grant switchez
in sometimes - The barrier of star and fan get´s crossed

the discussions going on now seem interesting and when someone
is over the limit, so what ? you can tell - and still keep the subject

In every opinion there will be parts of manipulation, as it´s about
communicating to other people, (beside yourself ;))

I like it getting flamed and I like it to flame sometimes when it´s
about subjects, which often get avoided -

would like to see more of that what was happening the last days -
I know some other´s too - It´s about Detroit and Detroit Techno too

differences are what make us (all of us) a limitless entity--taking all
of
our beliefs and combining them into one all-encompassing opinion.

yep

Keep 313ing everyone and let's express our limitless existence, here in
this
 dimension, thru music!

and the ideas with and behind the music too

okay. someone asked why so many people are on rich's nut sack. i
replied with some pretty generic reasons in effort to spark a debate
(and what a debate it is!) and now i'm spewing 'dumb ideas' and being
 compared to hitler.

NO - I wasn´t saying that at all - (and I didn´t name Hitler)
I was using an example, not meaning you not meaning anybody on the List
was trying to prove that your liberal RULES won´t help out in every
situation
in life - to switch out the argument that there´s only the kind way of
talking

It´s not my opinion, that only friendly talk is good - I think you mainly
are right
that it shouldn´t become to personal on the List - but what about some
PASSION !

cutting out harder thoughts won´t bring us the solution for them being
there-
reality is there and it´s not only a common fair ground for us
I wouldn´t like to campare anyone on the list with Hitler -
would be the LAST thing I´m thinking of - for sure -

unless maybe ;D

-

Oh and about Richie - wouldn´t know any reason to go against him
I heard some good things, did like his notes on the page during the
Ford Fuces 2001 but some people here really go like oh I did see him
smiling in my direction, when he was at the airport

I found the notes on his webpage particularly amusing. It is funny how
someone can denounce the event, while at the same time have a vending
booth
at the event raking in the $$$.

I ´m not really into Mr Hawtins sound (from what I´ve heard)

I still would like to say that this point is ridiculous -

Of course all players at the DEMF were dealing with the snake somehow

But - the situation did change during the last weeks with the firing of

Mr craig and though Iwished and said here

all the artist´s could have made the decision together

not to play not to let the industry seperate them from their

deeper spirits - your quote doesn´t hit the point, as the

situation did change a lot -

The nex thing is - your judging is based on a very simple model only using

- guilty or not guilty - this is not the reality of life

As soon as there´s a movement again - then it´s time to judge

those working against it - but as long as the hidden

izolation of the individualz - is so strong it´s another reality

And in this reality Richie´s words against the festival were good -

I think - (maybe it´s better to add this now ;D )

just an idea-it's not meant to take one side or the

but it might become a big DRAMA anyway -
so the actions should be a bit more dramatic

Taking a stand on a situation that you know
nothing of seems kind of pointless to me.
I say let the facts be found out.

waiting - till it´s too late ?

the question was: what could we do IN CASE ?

SHOW THEM NOW - WE WILL RESIST IN CASE

they do care, what´s happening on this list

THEY ARE ON THE 313-LIST FOR THIS REASON !

if you won´t move, who else should do it ?

the question in a few years might be again:

who stole the soul ? - and - how did they do it ?

many things happening now need people to

give them some problemz, cauze it´s obvoius -

THEY ARE READY FOR TAKING IT OVER -

using various methods -

Re: [313] on planet e - Roy Ayers and Dego - think about a change

2001-05-05 Thread neontsetse

totally disagree with you on this front. this song is about the opression
of african americans over the centuries and the ability to change the
future
 by changing yourself.

I know it´s not mainly about nature -
though it´s about the nature of change
I know the source ayers/kuti as well

think about a change is the headline ;)

loveless - with Ursula Rucker - great track about the killing of
mother
earth or think about Detroits Marvin Gaye what´s going on ?

agreed on both fronts. they are environmentally and socially provocative
 compositions

provocative ??

some more:

much of good old music, from Roy Ayers, Minnie Ripperton

to Stevie Wonder is a source for many musicians nowadays.

Much of it was based on a movement INCLUDING the idea of thinking

pro nature and to FEEL IT -

the secret life of plants come to my garden les fleurs

everybody loves the sunshine are some examples.

Also do read this context, when Roy Ayers and Dego make music together.

About loveless - how can you say lyrics are just lyrics ??

words create - peace and war - love and hate

yesterday I was listening to some old PE again -

and their lyrics used to CHANGE MY LIFE

TECHNO - some simple words only written on the label of a record

can say much - can make you think different - UR - read and understand

many artist DO MEAN WHAT THEY SAY,

even if some can´t hold the 100 % consequence,

there are structures when you need to compromise,

but it doesn´t mean you´re not allowed to move for a change !

- the new-DEMF-dimensions are a difficult subject

But I´m just thinking of another question:

Why is it, that so many people are trying to prove that people,

who do want some changes, are wrong, not meaning it,

aren´t straight themselves ... really seems to disturb some people

what is the reason behind that ?

What is this fear about ?

Is it the fear to restart some lost dreams and ideas and loose them AGAIN ?

or is it the fear of change, or the fear of a black planet ?

think about it. sometimes a lyric is just a lyric.

think about lyrics

2001-04-22 Thread neontsetse
Dear people

would like to laugh with you - but why is that one so funny ?

this joke is comparing black culture with farmer culture -

- is that the joke about it ?

- thanks,

it ´s based on an old kind of joke-structure,

creating a scurrile situation mixed with situations in real life,

to make people and problems in reality look silly.

In this case it wasn´t that crazy funky fresh and

it was also focusing some serious statements about racism

which did get reflected here on the list some weeks ago...

try to understand:

making jokes about it is destructive

It´s good when people talk and keep saying their opinions

about racism, cause this subject is difficult for many to talk

about it, as it´s also about feelings like fear and hate

and it´s about - you . always

It would be great if people go to the DEMF and talk

about it there over and over and over again ...

it´s important to keep on talking, to learn, to realise,

to stop and to avoid racism and for you to watch your own steps

it´s a very strange move to start making jokes and to make

people look silly in this case, even when you think it´s funny

talk about it too, if you have something to say

but stop making weak jokes about it

I do wonder about your motivation to pick out those subjects

for this master-piece of work with humor ?

and beside all that, the joke was also making people

look ridiculous, who are searching, trying to do something and

facing some consequences as they are going through life

realise - these people almost don´t exist in 2001 anymore

It´s the era of new economy - no rules - no consequences

but I guess you won´t listen anyway.

ok, go ahead funnies.

In the meantime let´s wait for some of you

ending up in the never-economy.

to those, who are too handy and bloated to move,

yes you, keep on laughing -

sarcasm is gonna f*ck you up

breaking point

2001-03-24 Thread neontsetse
Moby was the subject for some time now:

I wrote a message, which wouldn´t get on the list,
maybe cauze I was using some radical statements without explanation ?

I wrote that he was stealing from black music,
being white making weak music...
and I blamed myself for beeing white .

Well I didn´t mean to say something against participating and making
free music in techno-culture, unless it´s stolen
they take it, fake it and break it ...

I heard a moby song, maybe it was play, which must have climbed up
in the charts (making lots of money) ,where he used some gospel kind
of parts without the respect you should have, when you do sample,
or use music of the black culture...created in a struggle for freedom !
In my ears he did use it in an arrogant way, maybe he didn´t meant to,
but I think this happens, when you don´t have enough of respect and
knowledge from the culture you´re
stealing from...

Yes, music should be free... and all who keep on fighting for this,
have a good point... but this sometimes isn´t true...
As this world is not free at all and some music is fighting for freedom,
you shouln´t disrespect this music, when you do take out the message
FOR FREEDOM this way ...

If you deny the history and present this way, you´re acting like
colonists, who don´t feel any problem for himself with the situation,
so for him it doesn`t exist ?

blaming the surface of my own colour of skin:

I live in Germany and at the moment there´s a campaign
of the conservatives I´m proud to be a german.
You have to realize: In Germany there are some violent radical
racists who do KILL PEOPLE in Germany 2001

Why is it, that many black people in the USA live in Ghettos ?
Why is it a subject for many black artists also in Detroit ?
So why is that ?
Cause the situation is good for all people on this planet
and all are the same making free music ?

If you look at the world-situation, you´ll find out,
that many problems are build on racism..
And those having the power are mainly white people and the powers for a
change by them, are as weak,
as the respect to black music in moby´s music.

One way out is to break the identity you´re given by birth,
but still to face the reality of your own surface
and the role you´re playing ..

how can anyone accept a culture, as long as it´s breaking others apart ???

thanx for all given and coming comments ...

2001-03-24 Thread neontsetse
A forwarded message includinf reasons to leave mp3.com

(also 313-artists ;)) written by the www.tokydawn.org:

mp3.com changed their policies some days ago.
Membership in the 'premium artist service' is now required to
be able to take part in the 'payback for playback' (p4p) program.
The 'Payback for playback' program divides a certain amount of
money each month to the best performing artists (means the
artists with the most downloads).

P4P had a bitter taste right from the start since many
people were cheating, trading and using bots to gain more
downloads and thus more money.

There have been a lot of discussions taking place on the
artist-discussion-boards at mp3.com about the changes and it
seems as if there is a vast amount of different opinions on
the issue. After we discussed this matter internally, we
decided to remove the tokyodawn pages from mp3.com. mp3.com
has been ripping off its artists for some time now, but with
this change the point has come for us to react, we as
tokyodawn do not want to represent ourselves at mp3.com any
longer.

the biggest lie they tell us : mp3.com repeats over and over
that it's a service site for musicians so they can present
their music for free and without any cost. That is not true.
mp3.com is a webportal for listeners who want free and legal
mp3 music. So what they try to hide from us musicians : we
deliver their content, the only reason for their existence,
and their only way to earn any money.

And as you may know, the web changed during the past years.
Its no longer about how or why, its all about what. In
this business, insane amounts of money are paid for content.
Bill Gates pays loads of money for the exclusive rights to
digitally publish pictures, drawings and photography with
his corbis company. The whole TimeWarner/AOL (con)fusion
took place only because AOL badly wanted the movies and
music TimeWarner holds the copyright of.

So, while all over the world people get paid for creating
content, mp3.com does not pay a single cent for it and
furthermore even betrays its content deliverers.

First of all, they don't respect our work and copyright. If
you sign up for mp3.com, you agree that mp3.com has the
right to publish and sell all songs you ever uploaded there
even if you broke the relationship with them a long time
ago. This means that they can earn money with your old
material if you become a famous popstar one day, although
they actually never did anything for you. (except those peanuts
with p4p maybe).
(you dont believe this ? quick link :
http://www.modplug.com/mods/newsdisplay.php3?session=art=143
the document this article talks about is still the recent one. Every
artist who is signed up on mp3.com agrees to those terms.)

Furthermore, mp3.com is as unimaginably greedy. What is it with
that payback for playback program ? It has been some lousy 1
Million Dollar per month for all artists, that's about
150.000 of them. Now get an idea about the traffic they
have, the amount of banners all over the place, the money
they earn with selling information about the users to
companies such as doubleclick, the spammail, all those partnerships
and licensing programs. Try to imagine what amount of money is
earned with that.

The next thing is this DAM CD story. They get 50% of the
price of a CD, fixed. Now why ? You can be sure that they
will get their expense for manufacturing that CD even if you
sell it for 6$. This means that an amount of 3$ is enough to
produce a DAM CD. But since most people sell their CDs for a
much higher price, they earn more money with those CDs,
although they do not offer more value for you or your listener
with this higher price. If a commercial CD-fabric
would demand a higher price for making Ricky Martin CDs than
for making Mouse on Mars CDs, they would not survive very
long. mp3.com does exactly that.

And the newest gimmick is back the band, some sort of
micropayment system. People give you a dollar and mp3.com
keeps 50 cent. They get 50% of each donation from your fans !
Why ? I guess it costs some 2 cents to direct the donated
money to the right artist-account and this way mp3.com again
earns money without doing anything for you or your
listeners.

And now they changed the rules for payback for playback.
Most people wrote in the artist-forum of mp3.com yeah, it
may cost 20 bucks, but the p4p is worth it. So what ? The
Pot has been 1 Million before, but the difference is now
that the artists pay themselves. If 50.000 people take
part mp3.com earns 1 million dollar per month and instantly
pays it back to the artists. Chances for mp3.com are good
that this much people will take part, especially since those
fake-payments took place. Artists suddenly got money through
the p4p program, only some 3 or 4 bucks, but its obvious
that mp3.com wants to tell them you see, it works. Most of
these artists will never reach the 50$ which are needed to
get the money finally

RE-ARRANGE

CHANGE (again;))

some people got it already - now rearranged for 313:

I know it´s including some personal s***...
still - think about it or even better talk/mail about it ...
... break it apart, or hook up on this for some collective moves...
life and music-life can be more then collecting some record rarities
and party-nights (although records and partys are cool) ..

 Re: [313] Oh Lordy...
How many people on this list are reading from corporate accounts?
 mt

 corporate accounts -

 yeah, that´s a subject

- server business - paid servers in golden cages

righthow many of us do read this,
while we do serve the new world order 2001...
yes, we are a part of some really bad s***...

I do work for money too and really don´t know the way out,
try my best to build up some alternative structures, but still:

Does someone know the way out of this groove ???

Detroit:

I do look up to many of the Detroit artists and labels
how they managed it and keep on releasing some
of the best music of our time, keeping the content true
and strong and make a living out of it too.

What about talking, how we can try to use some of the methods
some detroit-innovators used, keeping it real and
if there are methods to move our butts for something better...

Do look at UR for Xample - there are more subjects to talk about...

Please again, those who are with it, let´s start thinking

about a CHANGE (it´s 2001 black)

Dear Fixer,

don´t know what other people on this list do think,
but for me his charts do make sense in this List...
as many people here post their advertising-stuff
new mp3´s etc..
Some do write fanmails about people
who take it fake it and break it.
What they do play at nortroute does make sense to me
on this list as the spirit of their selection ain´t no fake and
there´s always some detroit-tune or flava in there !

If all the mails would be Detroit-Only
I think you would be right
But as this list is full of other stuff,
and some of it is really bull,
I do wonder why did you pick out this one ???
