(313) What's happening with 'Miranda'?
Y'know, the forthcoming convextion 2x12 on matrix... I've had this bad boy (or girl) on preorder for ages, and the release date keeps slipping... it seems that a few people on here are probably more in the know on what's happening with this than my record store is, so I wonder if somebody would be able to fill in any blanks? Not angry or anything, I'll wait as long as it takes (on Sunday I finally received some deepchord records about 14 months after I ordered them, they'd been collecting dust at my neighbour's house until they started packing to move!) but if there's any firm info it'd be appreciated! Thanks! Si
Re: (313) Your favorite CD only compilations/mixes
Another vote here for the Dan Bell mixes; both really good. I also loved Akufen's Fabric mix, don't mind the new Cassy mix at all and I heard one of the Sound Signature mix CDs which is amazing. An older mix I really like is the Bentley Rhythm Ace edition of the FSUK series. Yes. I haven't heard it on anything but my headphones, it sounds OK. Sort of ravey. I quite like the vocal but some people can't stand it. (313) Blade Runner sampling
So I've just ordered a bunch of stuff from the sound signature represses and blow me away if Solitary Flight doesn't sample the Blade Runner soundtrack (actually I think it might be the New American Orchestra version). Excuse me if I'm very late on the boat (or spinner) on this one, which I think I am! Anyway, are there any other tracks which sample from the soundtrack? Are any of them any good?
Re: (313) Blade Runner sampling
http://www.discogs.com/release/488248 So when blade runner came out (so the story goes), Vangelis was as disappointed with the edit as Ridley Scott was, and refused to release his soundtrack. So they got the New American Orchestra (whoever they might be) to do their own interpretation of the soundtrack and released that, and it was the only legit version of the soundtrack you could get for years. When the director's cut of Blade Runner came out, Vangelis finally allowed his original version of the soundtrack to be released. That's the story I heard anyway, the truth probably involves a little less artistic integrity ;-) Both are great releases in their own rights though. He is also Timo Mass' production partner (responsible for that mix of Azzido Da Bass' Dooms night a few years ago that blew the f*ck up), and is also Production partner for all the current super hits on M_nus etc that bear Locodice's name. Does anyone else think that there is something a bit odd about this production partner moniker? We just had Modeselektor play for us here in Sydney and they were really bloody good. They've been playing live for AGES now and are really tight. They put on a great show, and their sound is just so fkin HUGE! It's not straight-up tech, more along that electronic dancehall/junglist sound that's coming out of the states a fair bit at the moment (think Shockout/Mashit, Kid606-style stuff) but it definitely references the detroit sound, which they're both big fans of; I had a good chat with the guys and they were wistfully reminiscing about seeing UR back in the day when it was Mills, Hood and Banks. They're playing a bunch of dates in the states at the moment, including an afterparty at DEMF and then they're off to Mutek. Definitely check these guys out. One of the best live acts I've ever seen. RE: (313) how Richie does it -- how do most do it?
I saw Stewart Walker a couple of months ago and he was basically using ableton and one of those doepfer pocket faderboxes running into a DJM600, nothing else. Seeing Monolake live using ableton was quite impressive - after all he basically designed the software for himself to use. He played a set of really good, deep, chain reaction-type stuff, and all he used was the ableton instruments and effects, no plug-ins. All sounds were generated by operator and he was just tweaking stuff and writing clips on the fly. And again, all he was using to control everything was a doepfer pocket fader and the laptop touchpad/keyboard; the much-vaunted monodeck was nowhere in sight. Mindblowing stuff. Sure, if you recorded the output the sound quality might not be so amazing that you could release it as a track, but in the context of a live show it was wicked. First time I've ever seen ableton used as an instrument, if you know what I mean. For 'proper' live, though, I think you'd have to go a long way to beat Jamie Lidell. He makes pretty much every sound using his mouth and has a custom max/msp program that samples and loops his beatboxing/wailing/silly banter, and then runs that through a mixing desk with some delay and reverb sends, together with an MPC1000 with some beats on it and a minimoog for extra phat crunch. And he puts on a proper show. And it's dripping with soul. You MUST see him if he's playing within 100 miles of you. (further if you have means of transport beyond walking). I'd like to see galoppierende zuversicht live as well - they show up with a bunch of hardware (NO laptops), a fair bit of it home-made, and just jam away for an hour or so. Tristan Watkins [EMAIL PROTECTED] 5/04/2006 10:09 am There are a few different types of live PAing. You've got an Ableton live arrangement/dub, or something like Stewart Walker where he uses an MPC + his other kit where he will have most of the patterns sequenced in advance, but he'll play some of them live on the MPC pads, and then trigger the sequences from the MPC as well (although I vaguely recall hearing he's using a laptop now)? Herbert will have most things pre-sequenced, and then he'll sample the sounds live. Then there's an entirely different level of liveness where almost all of the music is created on the fly a la Ayro and John Arnold, or Shawn Rudiman, where they play multiple instruments or machines in real time, have the seuencer take over for some of those parts, then move on to something else, only relying on a few bits of pre-arranged material. I'd say this last type has the most bang for the buck for sure. That Sendex show I was talking about on Sunday was sort of a cross between Stewart Walker and Shawn Rudiman styles maybe. Oh, and I was corrected after my last post that he actually had an 808 as well if anyone cares. Tristan === http://www.phonopsia.co.uk [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Re: (313) CD Mixers
Hmmm, it's a funny one really. My flatmate bought a final scratch recently and I must say that while beforehand I was quite ambivalent towards a 'scratch' solution that now I'm seriously considering buying a FS unit. There is something quite nice about being able to use turntables as the control surface, and this really has nothing to do with whether or not 'records is the only way to play tunes' - I play ableton sets every now and then, and use CDs quite happily with no sense of stigma. I guess it might have something to do with records being what I'm the most used to, and therefore comfortable with, but I really do enjoy using FS to play digital files more than any other method. That being said, Traktor DJ Studio 3 is bloody amazing software. You can use it with FS2 but even in standalone mode it's wicked. It has some really cool effects (that are tons better than DJ-mixer effects boxes) and brilliant looping features and you can run 4 decks at once with it. So I guess that even though my heart loves final scratch, if anyone was looking for a solution for playing digital files I would recommend Traktor DJ Studio 3 above them all - above CD decks, above final scratch, above ableton even. It's less than US$300 as well so it's easily the most affordable. And you don't even need a mixer. Couple it with the Behringer BCR2000 controller for lots of hands-on knob-twiddling and you're laughing. Kowalsky [EMAIL PROTECTED] 5/04/2006 1:14 pm I agree with you. I hate people trying to reproduce the perfect saxofone sound in a synth. God damn it, call a saxofone player. Why use serato or final scratch? If your music is in a digital format, you can use a large range of softwares to do virtualy everything when it comes to mixing, beat matching or whatever. Why stay tied to the limited possibilities of a turntable? If you want to do what turntables do, damn, put a real vinyl record on and do your thing, Finally, let me say: i'm a turntable dj. I like turntables, i do the turntable style thing. But if i go digital, like songs in a hard disk, i'll not limit myself to a turntable. CDJ is usefull for me to make some loops, play things that require great amount of pitch up or down (like +/- 16) with master tempo. There a lot of DJs using final scratch and serato just to show up in a glamour vinyl style without giving up the confort of carrying just a laptop. That makes no sense to me. I like music more than i like equipment. Find your cue point once, instead of over and over like with records, then drop the track in and tweak tempo. I also liked picking up the controller in one arm and tweaking with the other hand. People would ask me what instrument I was playing. Both Final Scratch and the fancy CD players with platters seem to me to be trying to preserve a paradigm for mixing and beat matching that's inappropriate to the technology. Traktor is really easy to beat match in, even if you ignore the 'automatic' beat matching. And if you can't give up the wikki-wikki you can get Traktor with Final Scratch. Of course, for me, the idea of paying hundreds of dollars for something that REQUIRES you to have turntables in order to mix is kind of crazy. That only makes sense in Ubercoolische world, where the DJ equipment is something you specify in a rider, not something you haul up and down stairs. Once you learn to beat match in one medium it shouldn't be that hard to transfer the skills to a new one. IMHO. Check out 12AM Maternal at http://12ammaternal.blogspot.com/ - good collection of cosmic stuff there, lots of weird vintage stuff as well. (313) Classic beatdown tracks?
Carl's remix of Theo has all of Berlin going crazy. I read an interview with Andy Vaz of background records saying that Beatdown was all the rage over there now. So what are the best beatdown tracks? And does anyone else like the stuff that's been coming out on Philpot records? Does that count as beatdown, even though it's made by Germans?
Re: (313) Classic beatdown tracks?
I guess my understanding of beatdown is similar - slower (ie no faster than mid-120 bpm), deep as hell, soulful with detroit stylings. http://www.beatdownsounds.net/ has a good description, though I wonder if it's simply a micro-genre. I just mention it because I've found a good amount of slower deep stuff recently (eg philpot records' releases) and wondered if there was perhaps more of this stuff that I was unaware of (beyond early house etc which is often slower), and so I thought 313 would be the best folk to ask about it. Re: (313) DE9 Transitions
I don't mind it really - I like the concept, and the total package is great given the price. My actual favourite bit is the DVD footage of him playing at the festival in germany at stupid o'clock in the morning. The visuals are mind-meltingly good and the music is lots of fun. The main mix itself is pretty nifty from a cerebral point of view, and is nice to listen to. I haven't checked it out in 5:1 yet which I'm keen to do. It's the first piece of non-vinyl music I've bought in a lng time, and I don't regret making the purchase. On the vinyl tip btw, has anyone else gotten into the new claro intelecto? (313) Daniel Bell is a legend
So we had Dan Bell come play in Sydney on Saturday night. It was f**kin awsome. What was even more awesome was this though: the party had to close at 3:30, just as Bell was kicking into top gear - I told the promoter about a friend's birthday party that was still going on and would Dan (hereafter referred to as God) like to come along and finish off his set there? Sure enough, God hopped a cab across town and played for another two hours, for free, for a birthday party (that was also boosted by about half the crowd from his gig) as the sun rose. It was certainly one of the most memorable nights of my clubbing career! That's all I gotta say - I just had to share it with you guys.

Yeah, Canadian, very much flavour du jour at the moment. His music is electro-inspired and quite sparse, his big 'hit' is Decompression on Minus. I'm not really into much of his stuff; the only ones I really like are Followed By Angels and Marionette, and an early release he had on Perlon (Alpine Rocket). Re: SV: (313) Carl Craig in Belgium (track ID)
It's pretty easy to extract a beatless loop of the melody line from the original mix of jaguar; a small amount of slicing is required but I managed to do it (and therefore anybody with basic motor skills can). It's handy for ableton sets. It keymatches with charlie webster's mix of 'Cafe de flore' by herbert. Always gets the heads smiling, does that one. Given that CC's using fs2 these days it's not inconceivable that he did something like this (although he probably just got himself a hold of the masters and made his own deluxe dub). From a weblog belonging to a discogs.com subscriber, dated 2 July: Dear Discogs User, As you will have noticed, Discogs has been offline now since yesterday. We experienced a cascade of problems with the servers yesterday that ended with the whole site inaccessible to everyone including the system admin's. Since then, we have been working hard on a solution to getting us up and running again. Thankfully, this server that hosts the help.discogs.com site has been revived, and this may allow us to get the whole site running again. However, this is an extremely technical job, and may take some time to complete. As sod's law dictates, we have four brand new servers already ordered and will be installing them by the middle of July. These should ensure we don't experience an outage such as this again. We apologize, and ask you all the be patent while we try and figure out a solution. In the meantime, if you need to contact me or another Discogs user with an urgent matter, please use the form below, and I will try and help. Re: (313) the orb on kompakt??
There's been some hot tips on the good Kompakt gear so far - here are some other Kompakt releases I like: Thomas Fehlmann - Whistle (lovely floaty goodness that's just a masterpiece of production) Ferenc - Yes Sir, I can Hardcore (m.mayer remix is proper cheese-rave-tech) Magnet - Rising Sun (definitive nu-trance track - really hypnotic) Speicher 14 on Kompakt Extra has M.Mayer turning in proper cerebral tech on one side with Schaffel silliness courtesy of The Orb on the flip The Total 5 collection is pretty good, again there's a killer Fehlmann track on there - 'Radeln' that's pure beauty. Lots of people go crazy for the Rex The Dog stuff and there's no denying that they are huge tracks but I don't quite dig them myself. The latest rumour is that Rex The Dog is none other than JX who did that 'Son Of A Gun' track ages ago. Kompakt Pop is wicked as well! Check the latest release for a great heroin-house version of Kylie's 'Slow'. I think the thing with Kompakt is that they release heaps of stuff and most of it isn't really that great (I don't think that much of most of their ambient stuff) and so they get a bad rap. The other thing is that there's quite a high camp element in most of their releases, and not everybody likes camp. /0 [EMAIL PROTECTED] 06/09/05 8:58 am hahahahah little fluffy clouds! :) - Original Message - From: z66 [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Wednesday, June 08, 2005 6:50 PM Subject: Re: (313) the orb on kompakt?? .. rite, but it took me years to discover Kompakt is actually not all that bad;) everytime i was in Germany, been checking some of their records [german record shops always seemed to have lots of Kompakt backstock, not to mention their own shop in Cologne], yet nothing caught my attention [was it wrong release, wrong time, wrong place or wrong me?] until recently, and then thanks to MP3 piracy. i really dig their two Mikkel Metal's rels, and i also find some of Closer Musik and SCSI9 rather enjoyable. havn't heard anything from the Orb since the famous cloud-song, i guess! ///Z FRED giannelli wrote: on 6/8/05 11:03 AM, J.T. at [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Yeah, that record is only OK. RE: (313) piccadilly records. Any good?
I can't recommend picadilly enough! I used to go there all the time when I lived in Manchester, and even now on the other side of the world they remain one of my favourite shops. As well as the red-hot warehouse finds that seem to pop up with alarming frequency, their staff have the best taste in music. While I still use juno most of the time, Picadilly is the place I go to when I want to listen to something fresh; their staff picks are always right on it. In terms of mail order, they do Manchester-Sydney in around 4 working days, with no problems encountered by me ever. In addition, if stuff isn't in stock, they'll send it out to you once it is, and only charge your card at that point. I was well happy when some gear I'd completely forgotten about turned up out of the blue a few weeks after I ordered it. Manchester heads - are they still on Oldham St? What's Eastern Bloc like nowadays?
Re: (313) iPod DJ
Yeah, but 'tis merely the novelty of it all I imagine. Most big DJs who are playing out on Final Scratch probably haven't really had the gear for long, especially when you express the time they've had it as a percentage of their total time on the 1s and 2s. Or maybe they're checking their email/watching the latest episode of Battlestar Galactica they got off bittorrent the day before. It's the perennial challenge, IMO - how do you turn an electronic music performance into a 'show'? And furthermore, ought you to? Cyclone Wehner [EMAIL PROTECTED] 04/15/05 11:06 am Every time I have seen a DJ with Final Scratch they look at the screen the whole set and never the crowd, and then the crowd gathers around and if they can they look at it as well. It's created a barrier. The next challenge is to find a way around that. It's very disengaged... (313) Carl Craig / Friday Question
It's funny you mention that, Dave - I too wasn't that taken with Angola when I first listened to it. Then I heard it played out on a big system and I *understood*. The track is a magic spell! It never fails to get a crowd moving. I think it's the handclaps myself. Which brings me to an interesting question for you all: What track have you listened to and not bothered picking up, only to subsequently hear it on a big system and then realise that you must have it IMMEDIATELY, to the point of even nicking it off the DJ?
Re: (313) Carl Craig / Friday Question
Also also A great track to mix out of Angola is 'Analord' by Luke Vibert, off the 95-99 EP. You have to pitch it up a whole heap, though, so best to burn it to CD (or pick up the new Lovers' Acid compilation on CD which has it). Thomas D. Cox, Jr. [EMAIL PROTECTED] 04/08/05 11:21 am -- Original Message -- From: dave cronin [EMAIL PROTECTED] interesting observation... i think the only dj i've heard play Angola is C2 hisself and i honestly don't remember how he played it. what's your prescription for how to mix into it? inquiring minds want to know. its probably one of the best tracks i have for doing long mixes, i usually lay the claps and vocals over another cut right until the breakdown before the bassline comes in 2/3 of the way through the track. i like laying it over something dirty and bass heavy like some older trackmode records or something like that. i usually just throw it in the mix as quickly as possible so i can ride the other track. watch out because the angola rmx is really really slow. tom andythepooh.com

Re: (313) Carl Craig in Sydney?
Looks like Melbourne definitely got the better end of the deal! It was good to see him in Sydney - the first time I've ever seen him in any incarnation, but the gig itself wasn't really put together with much love; it seemed to be an out-and-out exercise in making money rather than a party put on by passionate folk. Carl played fantastic music throughout - starting off all minimal with some Rhythm and Sound and the new Luciano on cadenza, moving through nice dubby house a la KDJ, into some nice tech and he generally stayed in that tech area for most of the night, colouring it with latin/african rhythms. He played lots of his own stuff (it was great to finally hear his remix of Beanfield on a big system, though I'm a little disappointed he didn't give Angola a whirl) and finished up with some really emotive strings-based tech. When he dropped the seemingly obligatory tracks he did it with panache. Jaguar coming in over Good Girls was a particular highlight. And then the next support came on and played nosebleed techno. And most people went home. Carl seemed to be enjoying himself at times, and there were moments of brilliance, but in all I didn't really feel that he was at any time running on full steam. I think he had a very very tough crowd to please and so couldn't take the kind of risks I was hoping he would, track selection-wise, without alienating a lot of people. Sounds like the Honkytonks crowd were more open-minded on the whole. I'm not really complaining though - as said, it was good to hear some fantastic music on such a great system - and to see so many people enjoying it; a real rareity for Sydney. And from a fanboy perspective it was just super cool to be in the same space as one of my heroes! Just to elaborate on Cyclone's description of his setup - he was using the latest version of Final Scratch with the new firewire scratch amp and full-blown Traktor interface, a DJM600 whose effects he was working from time to time (only delays and echos - no flangetastic nonsense from CC!), and he also had a 16-pad midi controller that he was using to trigger various sounds (and maybe loops and tracks as well). Cyclone Wehner [EMAIL PROTECTED] 03/30/05 5:41 am He was great in Melb at Honkytonks. He DJed with a computer set-up - Stanton Tracktor thing. His last track was one by Detroit Experiment, from memory. I think Carl DJs as a programmer and the new technologies have helped him come into his own as a DJ. Really superb. Cyclone Wehner [EMAIL PROTECTED] 02/08 11:57 am Oh dear! ;) Kinda like the Wisconsin of Oz (did you ever see Dogma, where angels fear to dread - 'cos of acute boredom). I dunno Cyclone, I might have to disagree with you here! While there isn't much of a directly 313-related scene, Canberra has a very small but tight underground that comprises lots of different elements of underground music. I played at a party at the art school down there last October and it was pretty solid - there were three rooms, one with bands, one with DJs playing lots of different styles from jungle/dnb to minimal tech to freaked-out house and so on and then there was an experimental room with all kinds of interesting live performances. There's quite a lot of producers in and around Canberra - including some world-class talent - though a couple of the guys who've really helped push alternative music have recently moved out of town. Because there's so few people into anything but mainstream choons, they all band together and so you get much more diversity in styles at the alternative parties - when Jeff Mills played Canberra recently he was supported by DJs spinning House, Broken Beat and Electro, and consequently delivered a set that was much more diverse than his other Aus outings, more in line with his recent tour with Garnier than the straight-up tech we got in Sydney (not that I'm complaining!). There might not be a million parties every single week, or month, in Canberra, but there's a good grassroots community of passionate peeps down there that you'll probably get on quite well with. Lemme know when you're going and I'll hook you up with some heads.

RE: (313) tons of tones
My favourite thing about slsk is the way you can chat with the people you're downloading from, and browse their other files as well. If you're searching for quite specialist music (for want of a better term), that maybe only 10 or 20 users, worldwide, have got, it's a fair-to-middling bet that they may well be into the same sort of sound as you. I *always* make a point of searching through other files of users I've downloaded from and it's quite amazing - I can't measure the amount of new music I've discovered that I otherwise may never have even known about. I've also had some great conversations with people from all over the world. I don't know if the other p2p networks out there support this function and to be honest I don't care - I'm not fussed about downloading warez or movies or top 40 CDs. slsk is my best friend. My only friend. David Gillies [EMAIL PROTECTED] 14/01/2005 10:22:04 am The best thing about soulseek for me is not in finding lots of well known stuff (like nirvana) but being able to find lesser known stuff that I can't find on any other p2p network. Try typing something 313 related in soulseek and then try it on another more well known network (perhaps like Limewire or something) and compare the differences. Then you'll see when everyone here talks it up. Re: (313) Soundtracks
I just thought of a few more as well: A Clockwork Orange (meaty old synths bashing out lashings the beautiful beautiful ludwig van) Midnight Express (GIORGIO!) The Terminator (John Carpenter-esque) Tron (almost as good as the music in the arcade game) Lost In Translation (just dreamy and lovely) I'll also second the call for the Akira soundtrack - it's amazing. There are actually two versions available - one with just the music, and the second has dialogue from the film over the top of selected bits of music. Apparently this is all the rage in Japan. And pretty much any John Hughes film (before 'Home Alone') has a fantastic soundtrack - My first introduction to Yello was courtesy of Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Also - do any UK folk remeber a wicked show on Channel 4 a few years ago called 'The Trip'? They basically took heaps of (royalty-free) NASA footage and accompanied it with some wicked proto-idm stuff. They released a double CD of the soundtrack that was simply wicked. Cyclone Wehner [EMAIL PROTECTED] 9/12/2004 10:12:12 am This sounds good! They don't have to be strictly electronic either. He's based in Byron Bay (Australia's mecca for hippies - well, trustafarians at least) and while the music he plays is hardly 313 material, he still is a kickass DJ with a great sound. I always look forward to hearing him at doofs because it's a welcome relief from all the psy-trance. He describes his sound as 'psychedelic acid disco'. Re: (313) DJ MIXER: what would be your choice?
I've heard plenty of reports questioning the durability of the AH mixers (well, the 62 and the 464) - apparently the Pioneers are the most indestructible, but don't have anything approximating the sound quality. Perhaps the 92 has got these issues ironed out - it certainly looks more rugged, and finally combines features from all the previous models into one unit, as well as having 'DJ-style' fader knobs rather than 'engineer-style' fader knobs... If you can manage without linear faders, the Rane 2016 is super hot. I do like vestax mixers as well (I REALLY like the PMC-250 with those dual EQ's), but don't know how they hold up in terms of durability. That new PMC-CX looks pretty nifty; the master isolator function seems interesting, though I don't quite understand what it's all about. Get an AH 92 though. Re: (313) Techno Films
Yeah, word to those who namechecked Robocop - it's set in Detroit, for heaven's sake! Tron and THX1138 definitely qualify, as does Rollerball. I'd also say Assault on Precinct 13 (if only for the soundtrack) and Midnight Express (ditto!). And A Clockwork Orange. Anime fillums are pretty techno I think - Ghost in the shell, Akira, (off topic can anyone recommend privately some good recent anime films)? And the first matrix was supercool but the sequels sucked hard. Cyclone Wehner [EMAIL PROTECTED] 16/08/2004 2:54:22 am I have been thinking about 'techno' films - ie films that the techno community have adopted as part of their subculture - as lately I've been catching up on DVDs when I am too tired to do anything else constructive. ;) I guess hip-hop types have Star Wars but techno people I find are into Metropolis, Bladerunner and The Matrix - classic sci fi. Personally I didn't quite get into The Matrix. It's very strong visually - and very clever - but I found it very cold and devoid of any humanity and the third instalment was infuriating with its inconsistencies and poor script. However, it is fun observing spots in the first as though they took out obvious Sydney features, it's clearly Sydney and I know that Dymocks store spot well. ;) I much preferred Dark City, also shot in Sydney, with the underrated Rufus Sewell - who was so amazing as Stuart era super mack Charles II recently. Funny it came out before The Matrix... Some others might be (or these are some of my faves): Gattica (slept-on, what more can I say) Artificial Intelligence (very simple yet profound, loved the multiple endings) Minority Report (interesting, I almost warmed to Tom Cruise in this role) Anyway I am wondering if any of you esteemed people would like to suggest your favourite techno film/s.
Re: (313) [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Yeah, I'll echo James' sentiments here - I too have no qualms about using the net to get hold of out-of-print rareties, but I find that downloading current stuff for preview purposes is great - I still spend as much money on vinyl as I used to, but thanks to the use of P2P as a 'listening post' I find that the quality-to-crap ratio of my purchases has improved immensely. Basically, I get to spend as long as I like (within reason) with a track before deciding whether to buy it or not - not a quick 2 minute listen in a shop or even worse a scratchy 30 second sample. Great for picking up those tracks that 'grow on you' which you might have initially disregarded on a record store visit and we've all done that, I'm sure... [EMAIL PROTECTED] 11/08/2004 10:53:06 am likewise, i don't regard p2p as the place to get quality files you'd play out. for that i do private exchanges. discogs is a great place to hook up with likeminded people. we're not talking recent releases on underground labels - i'm dealing with way out of print, rare sh*t that can't be bought anyway. there isn't any product to pay for in these cases that gives money to the label or producer. btw. robin, if as you say, downloading a file on p2p is stealing, then isn't downloading the file at emotionelectric.com also stealing? james www.jbucknell.com robin [EMAIL PROTECTED] ctric.com To 313 Org 313@hyperreal.org 10/08/04 05:03 PM cc Subject (313) P2P i agree with ani below. thing is though if you want these tracks for playing out, or whatever, mp3s (unless the very minimum of 192k, and even then) just won't cut it. it has to be be a full wav/aiff. and do you trust th person who ripped it to do a good job of recording it in? (uness ripped off cd of course) i view the p2p dl's as just a way of hearing a full preview of the material really (like you can do on any record store but with short low quality clips). once heard an you like, buy it. the dl'ing of stuff off p2ps of underground labels is basically stealing. i know i know i've heard all the arguments about how this shti should be free etc etc. but we aren't talking huge record conglomerates here (dl'ing the latest missy elliot cd is a far cry from dl'ing a downlow release). in terms of underground labels we are talking people like us just scraping together cash to get a run of 500 records out. sometimes selling parts of prized record collections on ebay to do so. to steal off people like that is wrong and will be to the detriment of our scene. ok, i've gone off on one there where it praps wasn't necessary but i wanted to get that off my chest. i am not saying that p2ps are wrong or anything like that (though replace missy elliot with cubase and downlow with ableton and you have my views on cracked software) but i think people if they dl the latest underground release off a small label and they like it and play it then they are obliged to buy really. sharing of mixes etc on p2p (unless it's a proper release off a cd) is ok tho and is what i use p2ps for when i do. robin... can't wait to hear this. regarding p2p file sharing of unreleased material, i don't condone people stealing other peoples' material. but at the same time, i believe i have the freedom to download material because i only play vinyl and will ultimately have to buy the record anyway. i know the titles i will buy when they come out, and may want a listen before shopping. also, a bit of laziness when it comes to encoding vinyl contributes to my support of sharing music on p2ps. (313) Sydney Spam / Tejada set for download
Hey gang a real quick spam to let you know that High-Jinks is throwing down again tomorrow night (Sat 31 July) at the Sly Fox, Enmore Rd, Enmore from 7pm. Entry is free, we're having a Christmas party and our guests will be DARTECH who'll be playing a crazy mixed-up trick set featuring tech faves old and new, XXX from the Deep Space crew who'll be banging it out inna chinstrokin stylee and our very first live appearance, STALKER FROM CANBERRA, one of Australia's hottest (and most unknown) producers, who'll be bringing his Basic Channel/Maurizio/Monolake-style analogue dubby goodness to all the sweaty drunkards that usually lob up for our parties. If you're in the 612, be sure to drop on in! Just so this isn't completely spam, can I ask if anyone else has heard of a producer called Donnacha Costello? I've only recently been turned onto his stuff (his 'colours' series on minimise) and I'm LOVING it! I highly recommend. Also here's a link to a recent Tejada set that I really like - those of you who don't subscribe to the tech-house list might not know about it: http://216.46.229.44/trax/JohnTejada_DallasTX_2004-JULY-17.mp3 - really good. (313) Fabric 17 - Akufen
Well it arrived in the post yeseterday and I gotta say that for me, this is the best Fabric release in quite a while. Lots of layering, heaps of quality canadian goodness - the future sounds great! Even though there's plenty of the clicky minimal perlon sound, it doesn't get boring or repetitive. I urge everyone to get out there and get a copy.
(313) Laptop performances
So I've been having a bit of a discussion on a local messageboard about laptop performances. By and large, they're really BORING. It looks like people are checking their email. Or, if they're bopping along, it looks like they're checking important email but really need to go to the toilet. What's the solution? Name some laptop performances you've seen that were really good SHOWS. And say why they were. Is it really simply a case of having stellar visuals as well, or is there a whole new paradigm out there for this type of performance? I liked Kraftwerk's minimal-movement-black-suits-and-plinths affair, but that sorta ties in with their aesthetic, and I heard Aphex Twin did a show where he just lay on the floor and twiddled with the laptop - no effort at all. That appeals to me in a twisted way but is somewhat gimmicky. I personally wonder if laptop performances are more suited to more artistic interpretations - ie having a gig in an office, with extras sat at desks with PCs as well, and only one of them is the musician. Stuff like that.
Re: Re[2]: (313) 303 SUMMER was (313) plastikman....
Yeah, I'm actually quite enjoying this acid revival. It seems to be the next 'big' sound - it's only a matter of time before Madonna starts wailing over bubbling 303 basslines but in the meantime there's some nice stuff coming out - Abe Duque's 'What Happened' EP, some of the newer Poker Flat stuff, some Trapez releases - all have got that unmistakable squelch about them and are great tunes to boot. Hell, even the mighty Kraftwerk have a full-on acid shakedown on the Aerodynamik EP courtesy of Alex Gopher and Etienne De Crecy (one of the weaker manifestations of the sound imho). Of course, it means that lots of people will be reaching for their copies of rebirth and going at it like loons possessed and we're already starting to see a fair bit of crap around but I think it's unfair to dismiss *everything*. And of course, if you're into that hard London squat-techno sound, the acid never went away in the first place ;-) [EMAIL PROTECTED] 23/06/2004 1:13:28 pm *** hey and why not revisit something old? the past, unknown to one, carries no less mystery than future. after all everything melds into present, this very moment, right here sorry for pretending to be wise=) /z99 it was 23.06.2004 when u've been going like this -= :: no this is your problem not mine I have little to no interest in retro :: music... why revisit some thing already done why not strive to do soke :: thing new and innovative... :: On Wed, 23 Jun 2004 [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: there's your problem - you're thinking early 90s acid, which has nothing on late 80s chicago acid! james www.jbucknell.com Neil Wiernik [EMAIL PROTECTED] g To 313@hyperreal.org 22/06/04 02:24 PM cc Subject (313) 303 SUMMER was (313) plastikman this happened here (montreal, canada) last winter... lasted all of 5 mins (thank god) and disapeared back into where i belongs the early 90s retro bins... ;) On Tue, 22 Jun 2004, Fabrizio Nahum wrote: on a side note: here in rome it seems like it will be a 303 summer, as acid is making a big comeback both st the record shop and the various summer techno events. (313) Akufen Mix for download
Akufen is next up in the Fabric mix series, and if you go to www.fabriclondon.com you ought to be able to navigate to the info page for the release. There's a decent interview with him, but more importantly there's a decent quality streamed half hour promo mix he's done ahead of the proper release (in about 3 weeks time). I think it's lovely. So go check it out!
Re: (313) CJAM 91.5 Windsor - Movement Main Stage MP3 archives
I don't think it's that much of a mess... just for your infos, Francois K's set begins in the last 5 mins of the file dated 30 May, 21:39 and spans over the subsequent 3 files (ie into the file dated 31 May 00:39) for the next day, if you download the 5 files from 31 May 20:39 to 1 June 00:38 you'll get the last bit of Electrofunk and then Kevin Saunderson and then Rolando. The sound files concatenate perfectly and so it's not a great drama to re-edit them in soundforge etc so you get complete sets. I've only heard a bit of each of the sets and they sound well worth the effort! Re: RE: (313) new bits / Tresor
I lve the Osborne remixes! It's hard for me to pick a fave though - I'm playing the Matthew Dear one the most at the moment. (You can get the TNT mix for free mp3 download from www.ghostly.com along with a whole heap of other goodies). I'm also enjoying: Minority EP on Tunnel 7 M.I.A. feat. Tek Bros - 'All I need' on L-3000 (a great track to mix after the Carl Craig rmx of 'Tides', BTW) Narcotic Syntax release on Perlon Also I was surfing Juno yesterday and found a track by Zap Mama called 'Bandy Bandy' which has a couple of Carl Craig remixes on it - C2 has now turned his attention toward contemporary dancehall it seems. I like it. Well, I like the crappy sample of it at least! [EMAIL PROTECTED] 10/06/2004 5:03:09 am I was at Tresor for the first time back in Feb, and it also took us an hour or two to figure out there were more rooms. The basement is *insane*, has to be one of the most intense techno-related experiences anywhere. Sounds like I need to go back and do a bit more exploring; I must have missed the Globus room completely... The other great thing about Tresor is the cost. 10 Euros for Blake Baxter, Pacou, and a host of others I can't recall at the moment -- plus cheap beer. Did you stay at The Circus Hostel? that place is amazing... - jobot - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Wednesday, June 9, 2004 7:56 am Subject: RE: (313) new bits / Tresor I have to say Alex this was my best gig ever becuase it was an ultimatedream come true and I loved the feel of the dark vault and its sweaty walls, its such a contrast to upstairs and if Tresor ever goes it will be a tragedy thats for sure. I'll bet Ian! yeah, that's some dark ass action they got going on down there. It's like some sort of torture vault or something. I have to say I liked upstairs though as well. Infact, I was in the pub last night and all my mates were pretty surprised that I thought it was so good... maybe it was because I was away and it all seemed different. I dunno, by the time I'd got to Tresor I'd been on a 24 hour non stop drinking bender. So my opinions are probs skewed. anyway I wrote a massive long post, I put a bit about tresor in so I cp'd so you can see my opinions on it. 5am came and the club shut. The rest of our boys had headed to bed, but I wasn't really up for going home, so Mike and I thought we'd head over to Tresor to see if it was still open. Arrived there 5.30 ish, walked in and it was JUMPING!! Pretty gob-smacked really, wasn't expecting much at all, but it was hot. Grabbed some beers, found ourselves a little corner and spent an hour or so dancing away, watching the ladies go by. So, we were in this room on the ground floor, and thought this was it - I was surprisedthat the music wasn't really banging, I heard Metro Area 5 again in here, some other stuff that I'm guessing was sort of Kompakt style things and some kinda modern poppy italo electronic stuff which I didn't have a clue what it was. The dj couldn't really beat match that well, but was workinghis records and pretty much had the crowd eating out of his hand. Everybody was going pretty wild... It took at least an hour for us to realise that there was infact more rooms to it! The Globus room is quite thin, but very long with bars at bothends, the dj box in the middle, raised up. High ceilings didn't really affect the sound at all and there was all the usual kinda 'club' decorations in there... At one end of the room was a little door leading to a tiny back room that was also a bar. There was a great dj on in here, again playing a bit of everything, and a garden out back which I sat in for a while and listened to the chit the guy was playing. Nice selections. You had to go through this room to get to the famous Tresor vault. Down the stairs, past the merchandise stall and past another bar, there were some metal gates leading to the vault Flippin 'eck! It was madness! Just a dark dark room (I couldnt see my hand infront of my face), a strobe, a low ceiling and it was packed with loads of mad german techno heads getting lost in the heavy heavy 'main room at Lost' kinda vibe. We spent a while down here. It was heavy s**t. Dark dark music, drum loops all the way, no melody, just driving hard music. I guess it could have been alot harder - UK heads, a Bicknell set in the main room at Lost was exactly what it was like They were using Ableton Live too when I popped over to have a look. I couldn't tell before I looked thoughwhich I guess was a good thing. so, anyway, we left tresor about 9.30 am and wondered the streets of Berlin, gazing at all the cool buildings in the basking sunshine. No map, didn't know where we were going but somehow ended up back on the street to out hostel. Stopped at the Petrol Station to find it sold

And, to make this vaguely relevant to the list at large, one of our guests will be fellow listmember JAMES BUCKNELL, who will be blowing us all away, Reader's Digest-style - in other words he'll be playing an epic 6-hour set (condensed edition). Two other guests of note as well - MIU, who says he'll be taking us on a Drexcyian underwater adventure, and APHASIC, who in addition to his skills on the 1s and 2s and love of all things german, is also a bona fide psychiatrist. No word yet on whether he'll be delivering analyses on what our track selection says about our relationships with our mothers. Be good to see you there.
RE: (313) my personal experience at movement
It seems like there's a fair bit of weight given to monetary concerns after each movement/DEMF event - stories of Derrick May hitting his folks up for cash, contractors threatening to walk out and so on... From reading reports, it's apparent that so far the organisers have had to make Herculean struggles to get the event going each year, and perhaps that's part of the whole event - perhaps the struggle is as important as the event itself, or synonymous with it in some esoteric artistic way. It seems to me that the two quickest routes to a less stressful breakeven are sponsorship or charging on the door. I can understand immediately the ethical concerns with sponsorship, but are the organisers so idealistic that they wouldn't ask for even five bucks on the door? Hell, if they're that keen to not charge for an event they could just make it really easy to sneak in (ie not have fences or security solely to keep out intruders) so that the only people who pay are those who feel obliged to do so from their own personal moral standpoint. That seems like a bit more of a pragmatic approach than having donation boxes full of half-eaten cheeseburgers. I'm sure that even if they did that they'd at least generate enough revenue from ticket sales to cover the logistical costs of doing so - at least then they'd still have that seemingly important struggle to contend with! all IMHO, naturally.

It's nothing short of amazing! Please take my word for it and pick it up on sight. Its a really unique combination music and poetry and story. Get this, all the poetry in the music has been printed on the inside paper sleeve to read along as you listen. Here is a little snippet of narcotic poetry which explains their work- its on the sleeve too: All notes of this daring construction are formed out of the remnants of a music culture from the last white spot on the jungle map. Every single sound has been placed into the composition by laborious, time-consuming manual operation. The arrangement is not from this world. The groove orbits around your own passion. The rhythm wins the fight of love for detail. If you don't already want to run out and listen, don't let rely on on-line samples or a quick stop at the record store to make your decision for you. Take it home and read the poetic stories as you listen. My pick of the friggin' year so far, and what an amazing 5 months it has already been! Its a really good time to like electronic music, folks. -jason
