It was a lot of fun to see them live, and hear some new material. Does
anyone know what song has really fast vocals and every verse end with

Re: [313] new Drexciya LP!

2002-06-20 Thread gord

jt,

The 12 is definitely more pounding than a lot of recent Drexciyan
releases. That said, it's still a bit on the experimental tip. Two of
the tracks are pounding techno grooves: one with a twisted sort of
Detroit feel (offkey synth stabs) and the other with harsh spacy sounds
layered in. The third has more of an electrobass feel, but still
retains that Drexciyan deepness (probably my favorite of the 3 tracks).

Nothing really earcatching with any of the tracks, but that's pretty
much Drexciya's style of late (as you say, different and less direct).
I passed on the last Tresor release as well but feel that this one is a
bit better (although definitely not Drex's best work).

nah, no basslines JT.

I only have the 12, but I've listened to it a few times and it's

The 12 and LP on Tresor are head and shoulders above this one,
although

I've not heard the full LP
To be honest, I was a bit disappointed when I got it...

3 rhythm tracks really, no melody or bassline, at least one of which is
abstract kind of electronica stuff.
It's kind of closer to the Translusion thing than to the Drexciya

tresor..

Perhaps they should've played Silent Property to make the point a bit
stronger?

Anyways, I think a lot of their attitude stems from disgust about the
whole electroclash hype. Here's the article about it:
http://www.eye.net/eye/issue/issue_06.13.02/thebeat/adult.html

I guess I can understand that they're afraid of a backlash against all
artists painted with the electroclash marketing brush (though
electroclash sucks just doesn't have a good ring to it), and that a
number of artists are jumping on the bandwagon before they've developed
their own sound (or can even do a live show), but I think the people who
were pushing this sound before it became popular will continue to have a
following even after everything plays out.

Looking forward to hearing them play in TO tonight...

[313] Influencial radio shows

2002-06-07 Thread gord
If that's your sentiment, then you'd probably relate to Solvent's track
off the Disco Nouveau compilation called My Radio (it's an ode to an
old radio show on CFNY in Toronto). That one brings me to tears.

Though I didn't grow up listening to Mojo or CFNY (hey, I grew up in
Edmonton, Alberta, Canada), I did listen to a couple of very influencial
radio shows when I was a wee lad. When I could stay up for it, Night
Flight from 12-4am on Friday and Saturday nights on CKER used to play
hip-hop and RB. And I don't remember the name of it offhand, but there
was a long running show on the university radio station (CJSR) from
2-4pm on Saturday afternoons which played hip-hop and electro (it was
all the same back then).

Also, if anyone has any mp3s of Mojo's shows, I'd love to hear them.

Re: [313] Re: electro is trendy

2002-06-06 Thread gord

I'm curious about that... any names to recommend ?

Everyone needs to hear the following old electro tracks:

Pretty Tony - Fix It In The Mix
Freestyle - Jam The Box
Freestyle - Don't Stop The Rock
Planet Patrol - Play At Your Own Risk
Captain Rapp - Bad Times
Garrett's Crew - Nasty Rock
Twilight 22 - Electric Kingdom

A few other classics off the top of my head:

Afrika Baambaataa - Looking for the Perfect Beat
Hashim - Al Naafiysh (The Soul)
Sexual Harassment - I Need A Freak
The Unknown DJ - 808 Beats
Model 500 - No UFOs
Egyptian Lover - Egypt, Egypt
JJ Fad - Supersonic

Electro Empire (www.electroempire.com) is a good site to check out audio
clips and get some history on the artists. Though some of the artists
listed there fall more into the category of hip-hop than electro... but
I'll leave categorizations to those who stock shelves in record
stores. ;)

Re: [313] [OT] Re: [313] submerge.panel and technology

Something to ponder:

Perhaps a technology based culture isn't what every society needs or
wants. While admitting that technological advancements in sanitation
and medicine are universally beneficial, one could also argue that every
family in the world having a computer and internet connection would
simply lead to cultural homogenization and not necessarily mean a
better life for everyone. Agreed that societies which are
technologically advanced have a competitive advantage in the global
economy, but should all cultures be forced into global capitalism and
the technology race?

a historic network of independent media reporters, organizers, and
activists exists today because of widespread deployment of
communication technology throughout the first and and parts of the
third world. Events like the World Social Forum at Port Alegro Brazil
or the Seattle protests couldn't have been organized without
technology. I'm not delusional, I know 3/5 of the world's population
doesn't have clean sanitation let alone have used a telephone, but
that's more of a reason we need to focus on getting technology in the

Re: [313] DEMF sets that you where impressed with

2002-05-29 Thread gord

Most impressive set award goes to Strand @ SOS on Saturday night.

Yeah I know, all the hardcores were probably avoiding Motor like the
plague, but since I couldn't stay for Monday (we really need to get
Canadian and American holidays synced up), I wanted to catch the Aux Men
and see what all the hype was about.

Needless to say, Optic Nerve w/ Aux Men had one of the best theatric
openings I'd ever seen (for a performance in a club), but good ole
Cubase stole the show (literally). However, it was Strand that really
delivered. Really smooth, funky, Detroit style techno/tech house in the
430 West vein done live. Absolute beauty. The small crowd there really
appreciated it.

Shame I didn't catch the UR afterparty that night though... I was hoping
Scan 7 would bring the UR sound, but they were a no show.

better next year... ;)

And I wasn't sure whether Scan 7 was a group or one guy. There were 3
people onstage when Scan 7 performed at DEMF the first year. I guess
the guy working the gear was Scan 7.

as for the SID records we all know you can only

I can second that. I've only been to Motor once for the Epoch party on

Catching a cab late at night in Hamtramck is near impossible. A bunch

almost 2 hours for a cab (at 4am). In addition, the gas station
attendants said they had to lock the doors and turn off all the lights
earlier that night because someone had fired a gunshot at the store.
Even the cab we caught was sketchy (the cab driver was racist and didn't
seem to notice red lights too well, someone had puked or _something_ in
the back seat, and the wheel alignment on the cab was so out of whack
that the driver had to keep the steering wheel turned 90 degrees in
order to drive straight... no joke).

It's also quite popular in the Netherlands, Finland, and other areas of
northern Europe. I know a lot of people dismiss it as being nostalgia
music, but I feel that many artists are taking it in new directions and
fusing old sounds with new ones in interesting ways.

Some other artists who I feel have been pushing boundaries in the
retro-electro subgenres (I'm partial to the terms electrodisco and
electrowave myself) recently are:

I-F
Legowelt Orgue Electronique
Op:l Bastards
Le Syndicat Electronique
G. D. Luxxe
Ellen Allien
Inform3r

... and I always thought mullets were more of a glam rock thing. ;)
They're still quite out of fashion here in Canada (due to the past
association with hockey thugs).

Anyone have any specs on Mac OS X? I've heard from propaganda
(http://www.apple.com/macosx/technologies/audio.html)

that audio throughput latency on OS X is as low as 1ms. To quote:

The Core Audio HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layer) provides ultra low
latency communication between applications and I/O devices that is
measurably more efficient than previous solutions. M-Audio reports
latency as low as 40 samples on Mac OS X from the company’s audio
interfaces. That translates into 1ms throughput latency — and you get
this performance in a full multi-channel environment.

Unfortunately there are no pro audio apps out for Mac OS X to test this
with. If this is true, I would think that it makes more sense to
release Final Scratch on Mac OS X rather than BeOS...

I have Jit The Anthem by Sole Tech on Detrechno. It's essentially the
same as Chuck (except Jit is repeated over and over rather than
Chuck). I bought it about 3 years ago and have only seen it once or
twice since, but I've never seen Chuck around. I've always wanted to
have both of them so that I could do a Jit-Chuck mix where the two
tracks are cut back and forth. :)

I would suggest trying www.planetxusa.com for any online record orders.
They were one of the pioneers in online music shopping and have been
around

long enough to have built a solid reputation throughout the industry. I
only talk highly of them because I personally, as well as a good
majority of

their shoppers have had nothing but solid performance by PX.

Here's my experiences with Planet X:

1) Their policy for international orders (including Canada) is
terrible. The first time I ordered from them, I had to do a wire
transfer to their bank account in NY because they can't verify
international VISA numbers (for some reason the extra 3 digits on the
back of a VISA card isn't good enough). Thus the order cost me an extra
$30 Canadian in wire transfer fees.

2) When I received my first order, a double album I bought contained two
copies of the same record. I brought the issue up and their solution
was to refund me for it on my next order. The only reason why I
accepted this was because they were willing to let me use my ghastly
international VISA number on the next order (so I wouldn't have to pay
the absurd wire transfer fees).

3) When I placed my second order, I brought up the issue of the refund
was told it would happen. It didn't (I was charged the full amount of
the second order).

4) Also on my second order, I didn't receive notice of what records I
would be receiving (just notice that a package had been shipped to me).
When I tried to find out what records were shipped, they said, our
system isn't quite set up for that - yet.

5) I can't navigate their website in Linux (my main operating system for
software development) since they use Internet Exploder specific website
features (and there's no version of Internet Exploder for Linux).

Perhaps the last point is nitpicking, but it's important for me.
Especially since Planet X seems to pride itself on independence
(what's more independent than a hacker developed, DIY operating system?).

Anyways, I just needed to vent about that. Needless to say, I won't be
ordering from them again.

I just saw Hell play here in Toronto, and I can say that while he
dropped a few nice tracks and his mixing was tight, I found it rather
boring. I was actually pretty disapointed. His set really lacked
energy and direction, IMHO. Though I'm interested in hearing his set

And Zombie Nation is a huge rave/club anthem in Europe. While it's
not strictly in the trance vein, it has that very catchy synth line
and euro-disco feel, so I can see why it's so big over there (and
barely known here in North America). Dave Clarke's justifcation in
Jockey Slut for why he remixed it is a good laugh. For someone with
such good taste in electro, he's a real cheeseball. Not that he ever
plays electro when he DJs live...

It was probably the crowd - what were they like? I rate him very highly. Was
he playing more straight-up techno or the gigolo stylee weird electro/disco
stuff? The latter is where his heart is at I think now.

It was a cheesy club with lots of people coming up just as I was
getting bored. Most of the people didn't have a clue who Hell was...

His set was predominantly straight-up techno, though he started with
some good electro and dropped one really bassy, f*cked-up techno track
in the middle of his set that I enjoyed. No weird electro/disco like
I was expecting.

Towards the end of his set, he just faded out the track he was playing
and put on a jazzy, vocal-house track. Then he proceeded to mix right
back into the bland techno again. Very strange.

Not necessarily my rebuttal, but an interesting one, from Jeremy Gilbert and
Ewan Pearson quoted without permission from Discographies - Dance Music,

The only reason for staying underground is that in relation to dominant
structures of power, you are weak. To celebrate that weakness rather than
to try to overcome it is to concede social authority to those dominant
discourses. It is, in fact, to _choose_ too remain in a subordinate
position and to condemn others to a similar position.

I find this statement to be rather naive and reductionist in a number of
ways.

Firstly, what if you don't support the dominant structures of power and
the political stance you impose upon yourself by working together with
them? This has nothing to do with being weak or strong, and everything to
do with supporting and influencing change. By staying underground, you
are making a statement that you have no interest in supporting these
structures. This is done in hopes that reasonable people will recognize
this and be influenced by it (thus affecting change).

Secondly, it assumes that everyone is interested in power and that people
are only either in a subordinate or dominant position (depending on the
power they wield). While to a certain extent it is true that the desire
to affect change is a struggle for power, it is certainly not individual
power that is desired (this is often why those wanting to affect change
don't reveal their identity or make public apperances). It is a struggle
for power of reason. To open people's minds to something they might not
have thought about, not fully understood, or not cared about before. One
certainly does not gain individual power by supporting a cause greater
than themself, nor are they in a dominant (or subordinate) position by
making lifestyle decisions to help affect change (namely staying
underground and often poor because of it).

As for things said about not making a website and not telling anyone about
your music in order to keep it underground... that's just missing the
point entirely. Underground is about a state of mind, not crawling under
a rock. Anyone who uses the term underground in an elitist, exclusionary
way doesn't get it.

track. Although not exactly avant garde (what truly is?), it does add a
modern feel to an old sound. UR also has some nice tracks in their
S.I.D. series (which includes everything from minimal techno to classic
electro). And although I'm not a huge ghetto-tech fan (I did enjoy Disco
D's I.R.S on Contaminated), Detroit is definately at the center of it.

And how dare you say that Detroit is stagnant so soon after DEMF!? ;P

I've mainly been focusing lately on collecting classic tracks that I
consider to be groundbreaking, but as for recent techno (within the
last couple of years) that I've considered to be avant garde, it would
have to be the stuff coming from Neil Landstrumm, Christian Vogel, Daze
Maxim, Justin Berkovi, and related artists.

Hey I'll be the first to admit that I have my head in the sand when it
comes to house music, jazzy house, and related producers. Nor do I
think that techno producers are any more avant garde than house music
producers. I'm sure there's a lot of interesting house, soul, funk,
rb, etc. coming out of Detroit these days too. It's unfortunate, but I
find that whatever style of music you are into tends to become the center
of your universe. I was just talking about Detroit music from a techno
perspective. That's why I titled my reply Detroit techno/bread n'
butter (bread n' butter because Detroit techno is what this list is based
around, not implying that techno is the bread n' butter of Detroit
music). Somehow the techno was dropped from that title.

As for influences/racial issues, that's a whole new ball of wax (one which
is probably best discussed elsewhere, and certainly won't be resolved by
debating on a mailing list). Just speaking about music though, I find
that it's good to know the roots, but one shouldn't mistake the roots for
the tree.
