dont get me wrong, if the award is for movement, then sure that's reason why kevin and derrick should get it and not juan. reading about the award, it seemed to be a focus on production/artistic output, something more broad than a single event. and juan's absence was presented to em as matter of location. if yussell is so clued in on everything, snidely dropping hints about knowing the REAL reason, he should have shared that info and enlightened us all, so we understand too. but it seems to me if the focus was the effort and success of movement, the committee wouldn't have adjusted the award, they would have simply explained ala it was re movement 2004, which juan was not a part of. that explanation would have been fine for me, it makes perfect sense, there's no drama or anything there. calling people idiots for not knowing the supposed real reason, and taking every oppurtunity to condescend to people who happen to really respect and enjoy classic detroit techno (on 313, crazy!), and taking the chance to talk sh!t about juan...ugh...who needs that crap.. -Original Message- From: Thomas D. according to the site, Friday May 14 Giorgio Moroder played this night?! Did I miss reports about this on the list, or did no one mention anything? Andrew Robotnik was also at Oslo once, and Carl Craig was opening DJ (!) UR DJ's have been there too. Rob Hood. etc. etc. There were Prince afterparties, etc. etc.Basically 313 is not the go-to list for detroit parties/happenings, (it kind of never was.) There are so many amazing nights and parties that are going off, many of them small but still high quality, that the list rarely hears about.. i wish people who live around detroit would post more about these. But basically because 313 is subbed to by a majority of non-detroiters, and infact probably a majority of non-US subscribers. This is not a bad thing, just stating a fact. (not trying to start any kind of value judgment thing here about where people live, so don't go there :). There's way more posted about detroit artists and DJs playing in UK/Europe than there is in detroit, except for during Movement weekend. There's either not that many subscribers left on 313 who still live in/around detroit, or they don't go out, or -- they DO go out but just don't do write-ups for the list about their experiences every time. Or some combination of the above... oh well all i'm saying is just because it's not reported to 313 does not mean that cool underground gigs aren't jumpin off here and there and everywhere :) I would have loved to hear more about the recent gigs at Oslo too... it's a great space downstairs adn well-suited to that type of event and music, and right there on Woodward. Detroit is lucky to have it, now let's hope they get enough people through the door to support it. (313) Juan Atkins, Louis Digital and CiM last Saturday...
Great night of music in Glasgow on Saturday. First up was Juan Atkins and Louis Digital at the Arches - Louis warmed up in fine style with a nice mix of Detroit classics and jacking Chicago gear with plenty of his own material thrown in. Juan played a set that for me wasn't too exciting, peppered with classics but also a fair amount of fairly dull looped bangers - but he seemed to rock the crowd well enough. The fun really started afterwards, however, with a party at the Unit which kicked off around 3.30. First up was a live set from CiM which was my musical highlight of the night, if not the year - building from sublime electronica to some of his more uptempo Emoticon/Headspace releases and some wonderful unreleased tracks. Juan stepped up again for a two hour set of much more interesting music - house tracks from Theo Parrish and Joshua, a few of his own classics and some really nice deep techno. His mixing may be a bit ropey but the tunes make up for it - and hey, he invented techno, we can cut him a little slack :) Louis finished the night off with another rocking set, until Jupiter Jazz with the EQs up finally caused the sound system to collapse and we called it a night at 7am. Nobody is denying the fact that Black artists like Juan or Stacey have had a raw deal when it comes to gaining anything like widespread commercial acceptance with their particular brand of techno--you're preaching to the converted there, I'm afraid. Going unrecognized in one's homeland is part of the price all artists whose work proves ahead of its time must pay, like it or not. At least we support their cause by buying their material turning people on to it whenever possible. In terms of true activism the creation of what Pullen calls thinking machines, impassioned music will always speak louder than impassioned words. Venting one's spleen in a self-righteous attempt to blame the woes of some Black techno artists _solely_ on race can appear a little reductive has caused a few firestorms on the list (mea culpa!) You may choose to disagree, but things are usually vastly more complex than they appear on the surface, over-simplified arguments (beguiling as they may be), are often alienating to others and the kiss of death to (constructive) dialogue.
