(313) New Stuff

2008-10-10 Thread Martin Dust

Petar Dundov - Escapements
This is a wonderful album, well worth checking out, it's hard to pull
off 8+ minute songs but Petar has no problems.

Extrawelt - Schone Neue
Another great album, dark beats, strange noise and phatty bass.

Metro Area - Fabric Mix
First off I should say that I don't like disco but this has a talky
intro that sounds uncannily like the Blackout Crew on Donk and not
even Devo could save it for me.

Surgeon - Who's Bad Hands
Great 12, love all the cuts - Tony keeps hinting at a slight
different direction and this release probably bridges the gap while
we wait for the album.

Arpanet - Inertial Frame
Wasn't feeling this at first but loving it now, be interesting to see
what happens with Black Replica as well.

DJ esp (woody mcbride) Naib Of The Seitch Ep
Some lovely dark thumpers made by deserted machines from the factory
floor

Glenn Wilson - Master Traxx 11
Hard and a tad Wonky

Azure - Slam
Detroit vibes, best thing they've done in a while, is going to get
tonned and hated

Poduim 3 - Len Faki Remix
Spazzy man snare rolls - lovely stuff

Good Night and Good Luck - Jacek Sienkiewic s

(313) New stuff I've heard

2006-10-04 Thread Dan Bean

Some stuff I've been listening to today:

Convextion - Convextion (Down Low)

Hawshum! Music that stretches to the horizon, I almost got completely
lost in this. A great album, that may go down as a classic (it should
imo).

Marcellus Pitman - Come See/A Mix (Unirhythm)

Very little seems to happen in this, yet somehow it's very good.
Especially fond of the a side cut. I was going to say that I wish I
knew how people achieved that, but I actually prefer the mystique.
Quite glad I'm not initiated into the means of producing music
sometimes. Not a very good explanation of the track - it's Beatdown,
but you probably knew that.

Move D - Kunststoff (City Centre Offices)

Only recently discovered Dave Moufang, but I love his stuff. This album
has depth and range, very good to listen to at home without deploying
token eclecticism 'and now for the chill out track, etc'. He makes nice
squelchy sounds too.

Dan.

P.S. Some of you may be interested to hear that there's a Detroit
Beatdown Vol. 2 compilation on the way...

I'm feeling this too. I'm sure Tom's geeking out on the tape hiss. ;) I
think I prefer his 12 on FXHE, mostly just because of Skylark, but both
12s are definitely worth getting.

That's one of my favourite mid-90s albums. I often revisit it. Love it. So
this is getting re-released on City Centre then, eh? That's a very good
thing. Any idea if there'll be a vinyl release as well, or just the CD as
presently listed on Discogs?

Has anyone heard his live release from 10/11/01 on Autoplate?

Can't seem to find the download or CD anywhere now and Discogs says it was

for me its all about a mix on this one. clanky metal sounds and
piano chords and whatnot. its been my secret weapon for 2 years. i
actually think the a side might be my least favorite malik pittman jam
though! maybe its just compared to how much i love the b side..

but yeah the general noisiness and lo-fi aspects of this record are great!

Tresor though, it's the 'secret life of Detroit's hard dance' side rather than
the better known melodic side! I like both sides though and I dig Tresor, so

don't know what to think of the terrace album .. The last track has a
snippet of a bassline at the end .. Makes me wonder
Ain't no vineyard .. But that's not what matters .. Although the compaund
one reveals some wine ..

What the moderator ep concerns .. I love that stark bassline ! Rest of the
ep is a nice mixture of sweet sour with the sour 909 dice to be fallen
right into the rachmad vain ..

Need a bit more time with both, but the Surgeon/Regis remakes are pretty
cool, the Kramer 12 is doing it for me right night, class stuff...

I'm not sure about Vector Lovers... There's better electro-pop out there
They musta made mad $ off that advert though - was it Mercedes?
If you're gonna get something on Soma, I'd go for that Silicone Soul album -
a coupla nice trax on it. Great titles too.

On the Detroit tip, how's that Disco D is working with Kevin Federline
(Britney's boo). Will Kev's hip-hop album be the worst since Brian Austin
Green? I'm surprised D would go near that one. ;) But maybe I'm just being a
hater...

(313) New Stuff

2005-10-13 Thread Martin Dust

Fabrice Lig - The Story Of A Musical Puzzle
Brilliant opener for his new label and one that gets at least 3 plays a
day at Dust Towers, it's cool that you can now get such a high dosage
of Fabrice talent in one place, recommended, take 3 times a day at the
very least! There's also great booklet that also documents his progress
through the years

Fuse Presents Joris Voorn
Not what I expected at all, well deep, great programming, fantastic
selections and smooth as you like mixing, right up there with Hawtin.

Cheers

(313) New Stuff Updated

2005-07-24 Thread Martin Dust

Dan Curtin - My Interest Is Vanilla - Metamorphic
Lovely stuff from Dan as usual, two cuts for the floor...

M.Pittman - Detroit - Fxhe
Odd and strange, but in a good way - have a listen if you're into leftfield
stuff.

Will Saul - Mbira - Simple
More on a house tipsome would say but I really dig this 12, dark techno
house anyone :) A-Side is wonderful, buy it for this alone.

DMX Crew - Wave CD - Rephlex
I reckon these guys get less sleep than we do, mad electronics and a press
release that out spins us (Are you reading this Rob). Not everyones cup of
tea but great electro from where I'm sitting..

Claude Young - 1.9.8.4
Embient flavours from Claude, not what I expected but one to check out for
Sunday/Monday mornings and late night chillage.

Richard H. Kirk - Subduing demons in South Yorkshire - Intone
Sounds like Richard got out of the wrong side of the bed, an exercise in
sonic meditation from the darkside of Sheffield.

DJ 3000 - Perseverance
Finally found a copy, more funky sh1t for my favourite guy called Franki -
some strange selections but it works.

Galaxy To Galaxy Japanese CD
Saving this one for the car, track listing looks good...

Los Hermanos - On Another Level CD (already got the vinyl)
Sweet as...

AM/PM + Lump - Sudelectronics
Pat described this as glitched up Los Hermanos but he's wrong, the riff
sounds like Matthew Dear's Dog Days glitched up. Really like where this
label is going, one to follow.

Derailleur - Cognate - Varial
My favourite electronics label, Lee delivers a dubbed out, spaced tune on
the A-Side, while a certain pooch does the remix duties on the B-Side. Loved
everything this fella has done.

Mat Carter - ??? - Varial
Not sure the title of this one, but Mat has to be one of the most
under-rated DJ's out there. 4 great cuts...

Aril Brikha - Prey For Peace - Man Music
Beautiful and works on 33 or 45rpm depending on how much you've smoked and
what time it is :)

Just had a quick listen to the tracks, really nice! No vinyl though

may have to get the CD anyway, I think the last CD I bought was
'Flora Fauna of Australian Sub-Tropical Rainforests' in '99 (which
I can heartily recommend btw) so this will be in good company.

2005-05-04 Thread Philip

hal varian 'catalysm ep' (new religion) nice, varied, original, moody, deep
funky techno with a bit of a broken edge in the title track. sweet.

various 'amsterdam remix ep' (new religion) mostly as above. nwaq remix
sounds a bit like they went out for a cup of tea left the machines to
themselves for a bit too long but the rest is real nice.

various 'thoughts from Chicago vol 1 (eargasmic) the k. alexi track 'me' is
real nice, I guess it's a bit mr fingers-esque but a bit more uptempo or
clubby. the vibes timbales are kept in check so it doesn't veer into a
noodlefest or latin house territory, mercifully. the other tracks are kind
of ordinary, imho.

freedom soundz (alex attias) 'hero / journey' (goya neroli promo) don't

surface noise 'add noise' (earsugar beatbox) ummm, it's funky, it's a tiny
bit glitchy / clicky, I guess you'd say it's post basic-channel, minimal,
warm, melodic. I like it.

check 'em out.

Hey, so I maybe feeling sorry for myself because I can't afford records,
but today I'm feeling like the kid in the playground everyone wants to beat
up because he's got the super-coool new toy.

So my new item is:

A Kraftwerk Box Set

woo!

It comes in a nice little white box with 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 on the front.
There's 8 CD's in there - most of the LP's digitally remastered.
Each CD is in an individual card sleeve, with LP artwork.
Only artwork that is different is Trans Europe Express, and on the
back of each CD it says, 1, 2 etc and the tracklist. Don't know if there's
anything
different about the LP's as I haven't listened yet.

It's very cool, and I'm very chuffed with it!
Not sure where you can buy them from or how much they are.

listened to a couple more things last night...

yotoko - wet ink cd/lp (delsin) -- yeah! maybe i'm not a broken beat fan i'm
just a yotoko fan...this is one of the very best albums of the year i think.
really nice deep spoken word intro, twisted hiphop beats, theo p style
house, straight up classic detroit techno, broken beats, crazy beats, dope
parallel universe-album era analogue db...just extremely satisfying and
enjoyable all around...the promo blurb says the album is about all the
different stuff they like and realizing that different styles relate to
each other and interconnect very naturally...and that to them it's all still
techno. really nicely said..the cd is 12 tracks, 4 of which (heaven
earth, all creation, mad daze, all creation remix) are previously released,
altho the version of mad daze on the album is a little different than the
one on the all creation remix 12. and i know i've heard karma soup before
in a mix.??..anyyways thanks to marsel for the promo cd :) i'm gonna have to
get the vinyl version when its out!

legowelt - tower of the gypsies (bunker) -- i've been a fan (and friend) of
legowelt for ages, but even so i think the records he's done lately (under
the legowelt name ;P) have been getting a little samey...the a-side of this
record is really one track and 3 beatless interludes..the interludes are
short and nice, but the main a-side track i cant even listen to it reminds
me so much of previous (better) tracks..:P...the b-side is great
tho!..dance of the moonbird is a reay great tense, shivers-down-your
spine italo soundtracky thing, followed by the dimension door which is low
bpm dark (but fun) disco/italo with a great grinding john carpenter (assault
on precinct 13 style) bassline..then a little outro track..nice

well, I have to say I find eddies tracks a bit hit and miss sometimes.
but, I'm kind of liking these. I dunno, don't think they're any different
to anything he normally does, maybe I'm just in a kind of Eddie Fowlkes
mood?

I was into the track he did on the detroit beatdown LP too - anyone else
get that..?

Vol 2 is the one I've listened to most so far. 3 cuts, one using Martin
Circus Disco Circus samples, a cut on the same side thats comes across like
33/3rd queen's Searching (or thats what it most reminds me of). Kind of a
ravey sort of bassline, with some vocal sample detroit something or other
- just some club gear that I reckon will be one of those things that pricks
up your ears on a big system. On the flip, a kind of 'broken' techno cut
that I need to listen to more before I shoot my mouth off.

Ahhh, then we must agree to differ! I REALLY didn't like the Cityboy
stuff with Niko Marks- thought it lacked any real balls or
inventiveness- the current releases are a mix of older material which
never got released and some more up to date stuff- the tracks on CB16
in particular stand out as being highly individual pieces

Yeah, you should! I think they're great, Eddie's best stuff for years. Best
of the bunch for me is 'JC' from Vol 2 (I think) - very cool broken
Recloose-esque vibe, loads of effects, great vocal loop - I can imagine it

aahhh..wutsup doc! :P

yeah i'm anxious to get the two new headspaces! sounds like 2 gems dropped
at once...

and i have the new arne on technoir but havent gotten to listen to it yet..
iridite 4 is dope too! i think my two favorite tracks on there are the ones
by marco bernardi (chugging deep techno, much deeper and better than he is
known for previously i'm told..is hot!) and the poke (coming off like juan
circa skynet, lovely)

i also just got these:
luckyeasy - pimp soul blister (ann aimee #3) -- nceee!! the a-side is a
11 minute track that mutates several times, is really more like 3 or 4
tracks...starts out with a great classic sounding swingy detroit bit, then a
more spaced-out housey bit, then more idm-y/electro-y, very cool, nice
journey...i really love that beginning especially, not far off from strand
stuff!...b1 is a hazy idm-hiphop thing with some nice quiet growling sounds
and lovely very soft strings and muffled melodic bits...very serene and
laidback, but very nice. b2 is another mix of idm with hiphop and even a
little bit of hip-house sounding beats, its pretty out there..more towards
cim and previous luckyeasy i think, nice again...

mos - goddess / razor (mos 001) -- more brilliant, classic sounding
stuff from mos!...a-side has a short little intro of a bubbling delaying
melody ala juan, followed by goddess which is all swirling deep pads and
simple housey bassline, nice hats...very nice, but honestly not one of my
favorite mos tracks. but the b-side brings razor which is one of my very
favorite mos tracks...has that amazing bleak but warm but tense feeling of
mos best stuff, little portamantoed chirps and yelps...brilliant,
beautiful...it's kinda sleepy, but at the same time tense and exciting. just
the most lovely mood. yeah. i love mos . then there's a short outro of
beautiful undulating strings/pads..

starfighterz - 4 flavors of a 2 sided story pt1 (delsin) -- oh flavor 1
is pefect deep broken beat techno, sounding remarkably like old dan
curtin..really really good!! beautiful sounds and melodies, this really

sounding to my ears, more of a familiar deep techno groove...reminds me a
little of dimension 5 stuff...very nice, but hard to match the creativity
and sharpness of flavor 1...great record tho! lovely enki bilal label art
too ;)

i'm way late to comment on these but oh well:
jon slocum - upstairs at derrick's (mout-1) -- great first release on mout,
side a is a 15 minute minimal epic, playing with an arpeggio,
ascending/descending pink/white noise bursts, and eventually some nice
meandering live-played pitchbending pads/chords...sorta reminds of old rob
hood, but it has a bit more looseness and rawness, lovely...side b is
equally great, a bubbling low-slung pretty drexciyan (the chords!) jam, real
nice loose and live feeling again...dark and plodding beats and bass (808
cowbells and sticks making it kinda playful tho too) set off against lovely
jazzy chords, very personal and creative..essential record i think! not at
all what i was expecting given the electronic punkfunk description, which
makes me think of hard-to-listen-to (imo) stuff like maurice fulton and dfa
etc..this is way more soulful and deep to my ears, and just sounds like very
funky, creative house techno to me...

yotoko - all creation remix ep (delsin) -- o mannn...this record might
be what makes me officially a broken beat fan...the all creation remix
itself sounds to me like dbx doing a twisted dan curtin remix...so unique
and minimal and funky and aww yeah. i really like mad daze too, dope pings
and whistles and snarling bass and subtle guitar samples..sounds are
organized really nicely, i dont remember being so into the nubian mindz lp
or much other broken beat i've heard..maybe i should check it out again..

i suck at reviews/words today sorry
jt

ps will email you soon k!! out of contact but not at all forgotten..:)

I'm back!

I heard some great new releases coming up...
Two marvelous moody, but light headed releases of Arne Weinberg. One on
Headspace [way the go Tom!] and one on Technoir.
If I could pick them out for a review somewhere I would've done them both
!!!

The magnificent talent of Rei Loci [Iridite prod] also surfaces on
Headspace... and how!
Funky 101 with a truckload of Soul and rhythms.

: )

Wait till you hear the new Iridite my friends... YEEHAAAW!

(313) new stuff

2003-07-22 Thread alex . bond
I got a hot one.

MOS001, one track by Aroy Dee - in vein of Aroy/MOS stuff - wicked
spacey/trancey club material
other side, a hot stripped down techno track from Peel Seamus Aroy Dee.
almost 'jacking' deep techno material.
very very nice. well worth picking up if you're digging that MOS sound,
which I am.

otherwise, not finding much at the minute that's new - can anyone else
recommend anything?

while I'm at it, I have a q. which has been bugging me big time for the
last week or so.
That 'kdj' one sided release on Moods Grooves - the first, slower track.
What's the sample? It's a famous track, but I can't think of what it is and
its really bugging me because I either have the record or know it.
argh.

Thanks.

Alex

I think it is Stan Ivory His Magnificent Orchestra - Stans Theme wich is

I think so... it is produced by Mr. 'De from Electrofunk. I really love

Hey Ken,

Well, I've heard one white label. I presume thats the first release?

I didn't buy it

It was kind of what I sort of describe as 'UR garage'

and yeah, it was definitely a submerge thing, it had one of their stickers
on.

so, I'm no help again!

(313) New Stuff

Just picked up the new Mahogani 12.

I only flicked through, but it's real nice. A smooth deep US house track,
in Kenny style, but more 'straight-up' than his Moodymann stuff.
Just one side and one track. Nice Stuff...

There's a few new Goya whites floating around too. Not had chance to check
them yet as I have no cash, but others might want to check 'em.

2000Black - New Phil Asher EP (as Restless Soul)
Neroli - New EP by Nutmeg (I like the Neroli stuff, so it must be worth at
least checking)

also I got a 10 by Brett Dancer on Trackmode the other week, 2 house
tracks, one side is really nice bumpy, a little bit off-beat electronic
house number - that's also worth checking.

I think the CD is vol 1 2. The new volume is vol 4, so logic would assume
that a CD of both 3 4 will follow on.

When talking about different volumes of 'Every Dog Has It's Day' , are you
referring to the vinyl releases? It's just that I've got 'Every Dog Has

 numbers.
