Good stuff, as per usually. More straightahead and less hazy than your
stuff usually.

"About 11824" is dubby but focused and lush. It reminds me of Mike Huckaby
a bit.

The Return of Cyborg K - featuring a new music video

2021-01-16 Thread David A. Powers
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4qBFX4oUGNY

My name is Cyborg K.

In 1980, when I was 5 years old, I was abducted by aliens, who installed a
communications chip inside my brain. This chip allowed me to receive and
understand intergalactic transmissions. Around 1998, I began to utilize
some of the information I was receiving, as I encoded alien frequencies
within my music, and broadcast them in order to facilitate an accelerated
evolutionary timeline for the human species.

Unfortunately, around 2007, the communications stopped. For 13 years, no
messages emerged from the distant stars. The cosmos was completely silent.
I began to despair. Was this a sign that the aliens had given up on us? Was
there still hope for the survival and evolution of the human race? Or was
our planet doomed?!

Then, in the spring of 2020, the silence was broken. The transmissions
began again, and so it is that Cyborg K must continue the work of encoding
the alien transmissions within cosmic beats. Will these cosmic frequencies
help humans to overcome their differences in order to avoid a planetary
mass extinction event? Only time will tell...

new music from Eddie Fowlkes and also Thomas Barnett

2020-03-19 Thread Andrew Duke
Music helps in the good times and also helps in challenging times like we
are currently facing with the COVID-19 situation.

Some techno legends continue to release new music. Last month, it was Blake
Baxter with his "Into The Groove" collaboration with Abe Duque released on
Kevin's Saunderson's KMS imprint.

April will see new material out from Eddie Fowlkes and also Thomas Barnett.

Eddie has restarted City Boy Music and his "Knuckle Head" series will see
EPs released in April and May and a third to follow later in the year. The
first release is two songs, not sure about the others, and is out April 17.

Many don't realize that Thomas Barnett is the man behind "Nude Photo". He
operates the Visillusion label; the "Low Tech Funk" EP is due out the same
day as Eddie's release. A nice coincidence. "Low Tech Funk" features 3 new
songs from TB and 3 from friend Ecilo.

I'm lucky to have promos on both these and they are quite enjoyable and
recommended.

Wishing everyone all the best.

Different mix to the vinyl, twist your mind around Heinrich Mueller
(Kraftwork)'s spatial dimensional reasoning not without a conspicuously
fluidic appreciation of the moment unreminiscent of cold and esoteric
Detroit electronic manipulation.

Jon Hassell - Listening to Pictures CD
accessible first track follows into trumpet driven(?) percussive
electronic soundscapes from mature California pioneer.

Carlos Nino and Friends - Going Home LP
California represent with regional self-expression through spiritual
musicality surpassing late night sleepers of Motor City to the East.

Stacey Pullen - Detroit Love CD

Hello everyone,
Greetings from my secret headquarters near downtown Detroit. I wanted to
share my new release with you all; it was recorded entirely here in
Detroit, and I'm giving it away for free for a limited time only.

My new project PAD focuses on the more minimal side of electronic music,
while still paying tribute to the rich musical legacy of Detroit music.
I've already completed an entire album of material, so be on the lookout
for that, and in the meantime, I hope you enjoy the track!

There should have been another two interview sessions but they just
didn't happen, it would have been nice to have 8 pages to dig a lot
deeper but I'm just happy the piece got used and Robert got some

Kenny Larkin's been getting loads of plays but mostly his old stuff. The

my ears, well that and the Hawkwind cover but the other guys like it.
Moderat has a few tracks on I like but it's too rock and roll for me :)
The new Cocoon comp is good but they drop "this is a promo" like a 100

I think there are still some people in Detroit on the list who are
relatively wired in but they don't post about upcoming stuff nearly as
much as I'd like. You know who you are.

Omar S has a newish record -- at least I got a note about it from Rush

Eevonext has been promoing the new Future Beat Alliance, "Patience and

Yeah, that Droid thing is floating my boat too - the 1st release on
this off-shoot was pretty good too and in a similar vein. New Martyn
album is good (Great Lengths on his 3024 label). There some nice raw
early Chicago action on Let's Pet Puppies (Jody Finch - not heard of
him/her before) and what's peoples' thoughts on the Henrich
Muller-Rice mix of the new Rustie thing on Wireblock?

I had in mind the remix of My Father and Flourescent Door. Looped,
disco influenced tracks, could even be in the French style but as I
say he pulls it off.

Satellite Variations is the one that's a few years old. Terrestrial

Ah OK. Y'know from the clips it's the Terrestrial 12 that I wanted the

Done. Those Soul223 mixes don't mess about either. Ace.

Some new stuff that's lighting my fire right now.

Culoe de Song - The Bright Forest - Innervisions

Wicked little debut. Two tracks (three on digital) all of high quality
but it's the title track that kills it for me. Along the lines of the
epic NY house sound (Sydenham/Chandler etc) but with just a little
more UR to it. Proper awesome sound. It's hard to get an idea of what
this sounds like from clips so check his RA podcast (with a preview of
his upcoming Reggie Dokes remix on Boddhi Satva's label). This kid's
still a teenager as far as I can tell - amazing.

BLM - Believe in Love - Fear of Flying
OK, rocking a 90s Detroit house style but this is done so nicely it's
hard to resist. Arguably you could say this another UR inspired cut. I
hanker for more house gear from the Submerge camp...

Trackleton - While My Sequencer Gently Weeps - Yore
Solid pulsating techno sounding a little like Osborne on a good day.
OK, I'm not great shakes as a record reviewer but I love this :)

Nebraska - Satellite Variations - Rush Hour
More Nebraska awesomeness from Alistair Gibbs. These are older cuts
that, given the style, should sound dated. They don't though, well
worth picking up. There's also the Terrestrial Variations EP out too
that I haven't picked up yet.

Kode 9 - Black Sun - Hyperdub
Like the 'broken' scene occasionally served up some proper techno so
the dubstep scene does the same. Both tracks on this ep worth checking.

Martyn - All I Have is Memories - Apple Pips
OK, I'm well late but I like the airy summery vibe to this. In a slow
mid-90s DnB way. 'Suburbia' on the flip is more on the dubstep vibe.

Martyn also does house, check his mix of Ican's 'Caminos Del Ninos'.

(313) Some new music

2009-02-27 Thread robin

Some new 313-related vinyl hotness:

Music Institute vol.1/3 - a legit released Derrick May track! Need I
say more?

Omar S on Sound signature - Blown Valve Train with the off kilter
claps (lke the first Omar Edit) is the one I prefer. He's really
pushing the low-fi thing on this. Pushing boundaries? Not really.
There's an AOS 7" also out now that is possibly better.

Scott Grooves - Detroit 808 - Natural Midi - Great simple tracks based
around what you'd expect. Ace.

Motor City Drum Ensemble on 2020 - More MCDE stuff, quality as usual
(I also see Raw Cuts 1&2 is repressed)

Mari Boine -Voui Voui Me (Henrik Schwarz mix) - Killer track now
repressed.

I also see Noni rereleased on Prescription Classics and Norma Jean
Bell on Funky chocolate with old KDJ and Theo mixes

Anyone else got anything good to report back on?

btw. new KDJ is apparently on the way too.

RE: (313) New Music

2008-11-08 Thread fran...@thatamazingthing
Wondering if I'm in "musically accessible" mood at the mo or is there loads
of good stuff coming out? Over the last few months my record collection's
rate of expansion has been mercifully slow, over the last weeks I'm back to
averaging an inch a week or something (and back to thinking of how I need
take advantage of the downturn to buy a bigger flat to house them all).
Anyway this ramble has just used up all the time I had to review them so
it's one liners only ;-)

Liquid Liquid : Optimo (Matthew Dear remix) - doesn't sound like the
original does sound good, kinda minimal but has funk

Francesco Tristano / Moritz - covered already

Fluid Ounce presents (compilation sampler) - not 313 but nice house

Mock & Toof : Underwater - as above, main side has vocal I don't like but
the instrumental on the B is sweet

Markus Enochson & Subliminal Kid : Schmutts - quite like the toughest cut on
here

Redshape : Blood Into Dust - the usual

Brothers Vibe : Natural High / Papol : Lapidus From Island - I like only the
deeper end of their (Brothers) vibe and that's where this is, don't know the
other artist but it's decent too

Novell Sound 01 - 3 tracks by another artist I don't know, Levon Vincent,
and 1 by DJ Jus Ed, not down with the latter but like the Levon V tracks,
Basic Channel-esque but with enough to set them apart from the mass

Eddie Fowlkes : Tiazoe Project - LARGE, his best for a while and a welcome
return after the horror of the Doors cover

c2 & Moritz : Recomposed - was very dubious when news of this surfaced here
but digging most of what I've heard, though not all and not listened
properly yet

Fuse presents Deetron sampler 1 - said about the Redshape above on Styrax
Leaves "the usual", the track on here (an exclusive apparently) is better
than that, real nice with Mr. Fingers touch, other tracks are good too, in
fact based on these samplers I'll be checking Deetron when he spins in
Manchester in a couple of weeks

Move D : Cube EP - I like Move D, this might not be his best but it's still
cool, A a steady number, B more interesting; track listing describes it as 3
parts, come across as one number with nice development

was just checking the new Modeselektor with Rustie & Dettmann down my local,
sounded good, put one aside

amp fiddler - stay or move on - detroit wax 003 (it's all about the

inexplicably reminds me of the first time i ever heard k. alexi and he
had this record that went "this is dee. jay. kay. ell. exx. cee. from

from the workshop clan)
idjut boys - droid 0108 - droid (trippy!)
djinji brown - afro bionics remixed - yoruba (this is soul music)
reggie dokes - rain redemptive love - philpot (absolutely bananas
latest from dokes)

recent beatport buys

andy vaz - hurry hurry (before it's too late mix) - yore (deep house
nice again)
stewart walker - history of zero - persona (313 list fave)
matt hughes - mr. & mrs. - outcross records (i can't decide if i love
or hate the electronic piano melody perhaps stolen from human league)
pigeon funk - bacchanale (dave aju's egyptian loving rmx) - musique
risquee (dave aju may very well be the man of the year as far as i'm
concerned)
los gauchos - it's not a business thing (instrumental) - do the beat
recordings (totally corny acid track that reminds of scott henry in
1996)

anxiously awaiting

moodymann - det. riot ep (why don't i have this yet? his best in a
long time. much better than the recent string of remixes, which were
pretty good!)

Hey is there an 313 archive working at the mo? The resynthesize one only seems
to go to July at the moment.
I needed it as I was going to reply to another post in this thread but Kent's
was the only one I got.

Anyway I was going to say I was glad to see everyone talking about these Theo
releases.  It must be a real return to form by him;
after really liking recent output (e.g. Sound Sculptures 1 vinyl, Kuniyuki
remix, Children Of The Drum, The Grand Son Of Detroit
Techno) I was worried I was joining the homogenous mass.

However I'm feeling better now I find these have no appeal to me whatsoever.

Third Ear does a really good job and I feel like their compilations do

Amazingly a lot of people, when asked to contribute to a compilation,
will give up a track that isn't their best work, in hopes of selling
the good stuff under their own name or on their own label. That's a
dangerous thing to do, if you consider that many people only find out
about artists from compilations.

Not naming names, I'm just saying.

Going down stairs was played at the 3 chairs set @ movement 07'. I
remember it being the highlight of the set. All but Kenny were dancing
like they were the only ones there. You could tell they were having a
great time and that was what was so special about it.
As far as the song, i can only remember it being astounding in its minimal
approach. But that was a long time ago and i can't even remember what i
ate for breakfast this morning.
i don't own them but would like to.

First a few releases from a promising new digital only russian label
called Simphonic Silence Inside (http://ssi-records.com/, russian only
for the moment),
which sell stuff on junodownload.com
(http://www.junodownload.com/labels/Simphonic%20Silence%20Inside/ for
samples). All artists are worth checking out.

DESTAMOK PHELPS - Inner Coast (Simphonic Silence Inside)
DESTAMOK PHELPS -
Headthirds (Simphonic Silence Inside)
Two greats EPs by this talented guy. Lush melodies, good song writing
and advanced production skills

used to serve the music instead of just showing off.

CLOTH - Cora Pearl (Simphonic Silence Inside)

Dub techno with great soundstage that fill the room!
The two title tracks, part I and II, uses old school sounds in a very
repetitive but intricate and trippin' way.
And the sound design is awesome, I can't imagine what it must sound like
on a huge system.

EVGENY LIGHT - (Simphonic Silence Inside) Aura Infinity
(http://www.junodownload.com/products/1268111-02.htm)
Slow spacey deep music with housey kicks and some glitchy elements. I
like it but it's not for everyone.

Reminds me of some Lawrence stuff.

SILICON - Sonic Rescue (Frustrated Funk)

Excellent timeless electro with great melodies.
Listen to the incdredible title track "Sonic Rescue" and you'll
immediately feel lost in space :)

OCTOGEN - Square bells (Soma)
Excellent electro still. Special mention to the old school track
"Influencial Perfection" which sound like it could have been made 20
years ago.

RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARP - Beyond the dark (Nature Italy)
What can I say ? Soulful music! All three versions are great and
complements each other.

Hi all, first post!

Maybe I'm missing something experience wise but Omar S is some of the
best produced stuff I've heard in ages. The magic in his tracks is the
way his sounds are produced, cos most of his tracks are quiet
straightforward in terms of mixing and song structure. i could hear his
kick drums all day (and night). In most of the tracks of his that ive
heard the beats just sound so alive and raw. They hit a really sweet
spot in my ear drums. Example : Congaless in Just ask the Lonely

Sometime he gets it right but sometimes that hollow kick just gets
lost in the mix. I love the rawness too though, which is why I keep

(313) New Music

2006-11-08 Thread robin

So got some more tunes I wanna talk about, it's kinda 313-related so
don't press delete yet. :)

Omar S - 111 - FXHE
New double pack from AOS. I'd promised myself that I'd stop buying
his records but here I am again wih a copy in front of me. Despite
all the substandard production values (better with this release) and
overly looped up arrangements there is still something unique about
the atmosphere he gets on his tracks. 'D Fo Sho' is my pick of this
release, kind of evolving in a BC kinda way. 'The Maker' is the Oasis
21 riddim (heh) with a vocal on it which lifts the track above the
already good 21. The controlled intensity (compared with people like
Jamal Moss) of 'Motor City Jackpot' works for me too. I wonder if I
can resist the next one? :) (Also comes with a CDR DJ mix by Omar S,
not listened to it properly but from a quick flick sounds pretty good.)

The 7S collective Vol2 - Seventh Sign
I picked this up for Estroe's Bellisimore. A wicked straight down
the line detroit techno record. OK so it sounds like Derrick but when
it sounds this good who cares. Pitch down (or even better slow down
in Live) for maximum effect. Not really given the other two tracks
much time yet.

Redshape - Misc Usage - Delsin
Redshape hitting the spot yet again. This time slower and even more
deadly. So, Redshape are hard to keep up with at the mo as they have
stuff out all over the shop but for me it's worth keeping up as every
release is quality. I'm getting used to the sound of their "string"
machine though :). We're looking at more of a Chicago flavour to
this ep. Misc Usage needing special mention for the sheer
overwhelming bass. Ace.

Various - What's Next EP - Eevonext.com
New off shoot Eevolute (see website for details). I'm liking all
three of these tracks. Terrace chiming best with my melancholic
autumn mood with The Moderator track a close second, the Estroe track
bringing up the rear.

Best of all this is a free download so get on it!

Sound Stream - Makin Love/Love Jam - Sound Stream
Latest Soundstream. Makin Love is a little disappointing really
(formulaic sample based stuff) but Love Jam is nicely wonky with
early Warp style clonking noises which would have me and my mates
going mad on a floor.

DCast Dynamics - Transmigration ep - Southern Outpost
Shad Scott (Go Sub) working that Donald/Stinson vibe electro which I
personally can't get enough of. All four tracks are good but it's
Matter with it's low tempo and Miss You with the floaty vibe that get
me at the moment.

Honourable repress mentions:
Trailer Ends - Runnin Around - Downtown 161
Chez N Trent - Hip to be disillusioned - Prescription Vault
Phuture - Slam Dance - Window

2005-09-21 Thread dave cronin
i have to say that i'm generally in the grumpy old man
camp: "i've heard this before-- can't you kids play
something new?"

but one positive side effect of the New Old Music
phenomena right now is the reintroduction of grit into
some of the music. even though most of the neo-acid
and neo-punk funk are waaay to clean for my taste, the
revival has had the effect of dirtying up a lot of
stuff. here in san francisco, the ubiquitous disco
house sound has become a lot less sterile and is (can
be) more distorted and dischordant.

another good side effect is that as much as i love my
80's punk funk, LCD Soundsystem sounds much better on
a modern sound system than A Certain Ratio.

well yeah.
like music played at the Paradise Garage becoming vocal house and not Van

so when Derrick May plays a wicked jazz tune as a downtempo break towards
the end of his set you get people b*tching about how it sucks

Re: (313) New music vs. New old music (was Juan Maclean)

2005-09-21 Thread Michael . Elliot-Knight

I wouldn't mind the "old is new again" thing in music if the choices of
influences weren't so narrowed down.
Take for example the recent 80s post-punk rehash. The primary influences
that have emerged from that have been Gang of Four, the Cure, The Clash,
and A Certain Ratio.
Now what happens is that the media picks up on this and focuses on a small
number of groups from the 80s and soon you have kids running around
thinking that these were the only bands around when, for those who are old
enough to remember, know that there was much more going on. So instead of
more and more influences opening up the music the sound gets whittled down
to "x" sound because everyone wants to sound like the handful of popular
rediscovered artists. I think this is where the whole electro-punk thing
went up its arse and got boring as f*ck.

Luckily most of us are curious about music so we search out the roots of
the music we enjoy. I would say that 99% of the people just follow the
trend and don't bother trying to learn the history of the music they listen
to. For them it's just fun. Which is fair enough I guess but it's
frustrating to try to lay some knowledge on them and you just see their
eyes glaze over.

I started listening to the Zippers while they were being hyped on MTV, and
I remember them being very firmly placed in the "retro/revival" arena
along with Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, the Brian Setzer Orchestra, and
ska-band-turned-swing-band Cherry Poppin Daddies. All the press I read in
that period made sure to mention either a return to big band and swing,
and some articles went so far to point out that the zippers played jump
blues, not big band. Even interviews with the band were like "I wear a tux
when I play out out of respect for the audience, too bad nobody else does
that these days".

Perhaps some folks play the tracks 'cuz they weren't around during the first
wave of that sort of music. If they haven't heard anything like it before
it's not hard to believe that this new output could excite them.

It's always interesting to me that there are people I meet who are really

i never saw him before a couple years back, but ive not been a fan
of any of his sets at the last couple festivals. so i think that
trend has been for playing that kind of stuff for at least the
past couple years.

(313) New music, sans soleil, stacey pullen in SF

2005-08-20 Thread Wojtek
I'm not sure how new this really is, but the Transmat artist mr.
trommer has put out a nice 80+ minute compilation of the tracks he's
played live on a free mp3 compilation available for download from the
phoniq netlabel. Ace 313 dream techno, nice pads, good lively rhythms,
etc, with some slightly squelchy sounds (at least one broken beat
trackon it, too). Highly recommended.

On a different note, went to see Stacey Pullen in SF last night and to
my surprise and disappointment, he played nothing but low grade echoey
trance with a buildup every four or so minutes, with a reverbed
spinback in between those. Is this what he usually plays nowadays? or
was he just having an off night? It's hard to believe that someone of
his caliber would play crappy euro trance, with just about every single
song containing the same predictable buildup and then breakdown.

To be fair though, he did do ok mixer tricks here and there, but the
song selection had zero variety and was extremely, extremely bland.
Did he get any better towards the end of his set? I certainly hope
that he did. was it just the pre-2am slump for him? Or is this what
happens when djs from Detroit sign to big management companies?
