Richie Hawtin creates music for the Winter Games
posted on 16-01-2006

Olympic ceremony producers K2006 invited Richie Hawtin to collaborate
with renowned Italian choreographer, Enzo Cosimi, on a key section of
the XXth Olympics Winter Games Opening Ceremony taking place in Torino
on February 10th. The new composition titled 9:20 was written & produced
by Hawtin and will accompany Cosimi's provocative choreography featuring
famous Italian dancer Robert Bolle along with dozens of other dancers,
performers and acrobats. Hawtin & Cosimi worked together in
Hawtin's Berlin studio to fully realize the drama and emotions of
Cosimi's performers, building an evolving soundscape of sounds and
effects to accompany the different movements of Cosimi's piece. Ceremony
producers have assembled an energetic program planned for the Opening
Ceremonies with a theme originating around the foundation elements of
Rhythm, Passion and Speed. Internationally renown not only for his music
and global DJ performances, but also for his interest in new creative
technologies, Hawtin is in perfect harmony with both the concept and its
global audience. "Enzo and I are very much interested in pushing
boundaries, both as artists and for our audiences. Working together for
the Opening Ceremonies of the Winter Games delivers the creative
endeavor to not only entertain a huge audience, but to also introduce
them to sights and sounds that they may have never experienced before,"
says Hawtin from his studio in Berlin. Born in England and raised in
Windsor, Ontario, Canada, Richie Hawtin is highly regarded
internationally for his recordings both as Richie Hawtin and his
pseudonym as Plastikman while on the world stage as one of electronic
music's most innovative and in demand performers. His recent album, DE9
| Transitions boasts a CD mix plus DVD featuring a 5.1 surround mix
produced by Hawtin. Today, in between touring the globe, the Canadian
producer spends time between his studios in Windsor, Canada and Berlin,
Germany.

He played in Koneisto festival here in Finland the same day

Re: (313) hawtin in windsor/chi-town

2003-10-21 Thread yussel
Wired is a rather large and bland nightclub. Decent sound although I'm
sure Hawtin wil have his own. And the plain surroundings make it ideal for
the usual decor that plus 8 is known for.

as for chicago- vision is a pretty amazing venue. its ridiculously big and
kinda fun to just run around in. they are also one of the last big clubs
that i know of to have stacks (instead of a flown system). The problem is-
its right in the middle of tourist central, so you can expect more of a
generic clubby crowd that happens to stumble in on any given night. Also-
expect to spend a fortune on drinks (but they do serve until 5am as
opposed to Windsor's 2am). YOu'll also get an extra hour of Rich (4am-5am)
that you won't get in Windsor, but personally I would still prefer to go
to the Windsor gig. You know that if nothing else the sound will be
fantastic. And I've always found Rich's hometown sets to be a lot more
interesting than away games.

Whatever- I'll be stuck seeing him in LA the following week since I'm
moving there. I guess I'll find out how la-la-land reacts to techno.

Yeah it was really shocking. Very disappointing. He seems to have gone all

Re: (313) Hawtin in Melbourne

2002-09-29 Thread Cyclone Wehner
Could be the crowd.

I had thought that because Southern Outpost's Deep Space in Sydney was such
a success that there could be a fresh interest in techno in Sydney - even
though, excepting DJs and producers, the culture has never been especially
strong there. I decided to see for myself.

I spent last night in Sydney and was quite disappointed at the turn-out at
what I thought was a cool underground tech-house night - Chalk with really
good local DJs like Ken Cloud, Biz-E, etc. I left after 11/2 hours as it was
depressingly quiet. The night had been really well promoted, too. Reachin'
record store in Oxford St has good techno stock, and those guys are pushing
good music, but ears are not open. I didn't get to BPM in time.

I saw Stacey Pullen in two cities and I can tell you in Melbourne he played
a much wider diversity over 6 hours on a Wed night, and the floor was full,
whereas in Sydney he was maybe tougher (still incredible, he just played
differently - more directly maybe) and he didn't go off into tangents like
he does here. In Melbourne he was very subtle and really free. It was one of
the best-ever DJ sets I have experienced.

I talked to some people at the gig in Sydney and they were mostly younger
and into progressive house and things like Tyrant, obviousy they get into
Stacey, so there's crossover, but whether they'd let him play an old funk
record is another matter. In Melbourne they would.

I think Richie needs to play smaller venues in Australia myself, but it's a
matter of viability for the promoter/s.

I understand your point, and I'll admit that it is nice to see a DJ
enjoying the party vibe.
My point is that it isn't a good reason not to go and hear a DJ. It's not
the most important thing.
Other than the bad attitude D.C is an excellent DJ.
This has got me thinking about other DJs that don't show much emotion
whilst playing. Surely there are a few Detroit DJs that have been brought
up on the mean streets and aren't all smiley and jumpin around when on the
decks? I don't remember Rolando being particularly jolly!

Agree..i remember a fwe years back when Sven was playing
Mazzo in Asmterdam on sundaynight. the place was pretty packed
and he played form 00.00 till 07.00 in the morning. When i enterd
Mazzo and went to bar for a beer a found myself standing next a
rather little person (and i am not so tall myself:) with a funny
haircut, turned out it was mr. Väth himself. He just stood at the
bar orderd a beer and we had a chat about the night. We talked about
how he liked playing clubs like mazzo, coming early to a club to
catch some of the atmosphere before playing and he bought me beer.
Then he went of to spin few tunes..bought him a beer back later on..
Had a very good night..and Sven couldn´t do wrong with me anymore:)

Hi,

I believe you guys are missing an important aspect here. We are talking
about PARTIES here. Parties are supposed to be fun and the DJ should just as
much be a part of the party as the crowd is.
DC clearly is not. He acts as if it's only a job he has to do and although
it IS for him, it should be more than just showing up in time and dropping
his records.
Sven's attitude is not about "look at how cheery I am". It's about partying
together with the crowd and showing respect to the crowd by not only
dropping the best tunes in the best possible build up (and making them go
totally mad in the process), playing for as long as the clubowner lets him
and by being on the floor before his sets, checking the atmosphere out and
talking to people, even remembering when he has spoken to them before and
about what!
We are still an underground scene, where the "stars" don't need to develop
arrogant attitudes and need bodyguards and all that nonsense.

I had the pleasure of visiting the Rex in Paris once where Sven was playing.
When I entered the club, he was standing at the bar and he approached ME
asking surprised what I was doing here since I was from Holland where I'd
spoken with him at a party months before. He knew that!! He immediately
introduced me to Terence Fixmer who was there too. Later he played a great
set in that strange DJ booth with the windows open. It was so funny to see
the three lines thick of trainspotters standing there the whole time.
A couple of weeks later I saw a documentary on Dutch TV about Dave Clarke.
There he was also playing at the Rex. There you saw him sitting backstage
the whole time before his set, by himself, looking as if he was waiting for
a dentist appointment. When he came on he had no idea what the DJ before him
had been doing, then the windows went shut Now there's a guy who must
really love his job.
A job that 1000's of others would kill for.

It's about partying

but, as you said, he does play a mean electro set. i've been to a couple of
nights that if it weren't for him, would have been completely boring. i
think there was a lost, at the scala maybe, where he's set was the only
interesting and dancable stuff played. i'm going to get done for that as i
can't remember who the other headliner was, just that it was someone well
popular?

i can also think of a lot of great dj's who have openly criticised drug

yeah that's another reason I hate Dark Cave - he's such a moody fellah. I
too have seen him throwing his attitude (on many occasions) - and without
fail 2 minutes before the end of his set on goes the leather jacket and to
the dot 2 minutes later off comes the needle and he's on his way.

Back in the early days he was very outspoken about drugs, how bad they are
(which is a matter of opinion) and about kids necking 'e's. He had some
very disrespectful comments to make. Seems a bit strange to me, seeing as
drugs play a major part on the dance scene and its mainly down to these

in his time. I can think of a few place I heard him and begrudgingly had to

sort of set from him again at Atomic Jam a few days later (or was it b4

I'd just like to back up what our friend Martijn says:

Richie is my God, Sven as the arch-angel sits by this throne on the right
hand side.

There's good trance and there's bubblegum trance. My definition of good
trance is that which is not a million miles removed from Techno. I'd never
call Harthouse's trance bubblegum. Sometimes his sets are 'trancey' and
sometimes they are as hard as nails. I dont think I have ever been
disappointed with Sven. Yeah sometimes his set didn't get the usual 8 or 9
outta 10 with me. But then even Richie's had a bum mark once or twice and
nearly got a detention once at the End!

I had the pleasure of going to TimeWarp in Mannheim last year and was
amazed.
As I remember Sven came on about 5:00am and played through to the official
close at 7:00am. Now Mannheim is about 30/45 minutes from Frankfurt Airport
and I had a plane back to London around 2:30pm. I remember leaving TimeWarp
at around midday and Sven was still playing. And he's such a cool friendly
guy. He recognises my face and has often come over to me and said 'Hey how
are you?' and so he obviously knows I'm English. It's never been 'Wie gehen
sie?' even in the German clubs.

Another brilliant set I saw of Sven's was at what was one of the final
birthday parties at the Dorian Grey club also at Frankfurt airport. Now
that is (was)something else. I remember walking through the deserted
airport around 11.30 at night looking for the club. Coming out of there the
next day (Sunday afternoon) at around 1.30pm you don't half get some strange
looks - with the airport then packed to the seams with travellers..
pretty mind blowing!!

he's a legend round here and been a kind of unofficial
resident at the orbit for 10 years with omen parties, harthouse
nights, birthday parties and 1 or 2 orbit parties over at the omen many
years back. the ultimate party dj for me it's always a great atmosphere
when he plays and so what if he isn't the worlds best mixer (juan atkins?).
certainly deserves alot more respect than he gets on biased list.

love is in the air!

And isn't great when yo see DJ's getting along and having a laugh,
all DJ's should have this mentallity, not likem Dave CLarke and Carl Cox
who I saw at the
End and Dave got really arsey withn Carl for dropping one more tunre than he
should of..

fair enuff every DJ likes one more tunes but Mr Clarke got a bot funny and
knocked
Carl while he got to the decks, to the punters it looked really bad.

But hey we all get in moods and DJ's are the same, so hey its nice too see
when they
are having fun together..

a martch made in heaven Sven & Richie ( and his woman) on the same
nite...loved up all the time!

He did a bunch of work, including Harlequin with Ralf Hildenbeutel, who was
one of the better Harthouse producers. I always preferred Hildenbeutel's
individual productions to those with Mr. Vath. All of it was on the trancey
end of things before that was a bad word. Some of it was extremely dense and
involved. I think one of the best efforts was a Harthouse compilation called
"Mission Into Drums" that wasn't 1/2 as hard as the title would indicate.
Hildenbeutel was at the top of my list of early-mid '90s trance producers
along with Oliver Lieb, the Rising High crew and Sun Electric (yes - I know
they weren't *just* trance producers, but they did make trance).

Please no anti-trance flames. I'm sure most of us can, do and have agreed
about that - and you'll be preaching to the converted at best. This was well
before the codification of the genre as we know it today. Some of it may be
a bit too "sweet" by most techno tastes, but it was every bit the evolving
genre that techno was for a brief time, until it became a marketing tool
rather than a musical style. I feel like I just wrote one of those email
legal disclaimers that so many of our subscribers are stuck with today. :)

RE: [313] Hawtin vs. Sven

2002-04-18 Thread Jongsma, K.J.
HE actually doesn't make his own tracks, i have never heard a track he made
alone. His early was always with Ralf something (Forgot his last name). His
latest work is done together with really talented producers such as Acid
Jezus and Anthony Rother.

I read an interview with him in a dutch magazine 2 years ago where he said
that producers who start to DJ are lame and just a sell-out. He didn't say
anything about a DJ who needs other producers to make records as the DJ.

2002-04-18 Thread Martijn de Blaauw
Yes, a great dj and also a ambassador for European techno!
But his own releases aren't half as good as the tracks he spins.
Although i did like 'Dein Schweiss' and his new album 'fire'
isn't bad either but harlequin stuff is quite boring...

His two mix albums on the other hand 'cocoon club at Ibizia'
are very, very good!..bless him for bringing true techno nights
the to island of cheesy trance and boring progressive..
Jeff Mills spinning at Amnesia, who could have thought of that..ever!

RE: [313] Hawtin vs. Sven

2002-04-18 Thread Ian Cheshire
Sven I have seen a few times and always impresses me.

He takes three decks sometimes and plays melodies and breaks
on the third deck rather than loops or beats. The guy has a great way
of building sets and is truly a pioneer in European Techno...

He is/was the man to se3 at the Love Parade although I hear he hasd pulled
out this year??

i've heard for ages, the whole set was a perfect build-up
from start to finish...20.000 people went completly nuts!!
Got the whole set at home for those interessted.

Okay , back to obscure techno business now..

Sven's a weird one. He definately has the capacity for trance (duh- the
guy ran Harthouse). And I've been told that when he plays in Europe, he
spends more time waving his hands than mixing records.

PG> if anyone is interested in seeing the waving of the hands check out the
new sven set up on klubradio.de , very funny indeed. he was doing the same @
tronic treatment this past monday.

BUT, the two times I saw him last year (Toronto and Miami) he threw down
amazing techno sets.

He was dropping trancy tracks, so not very good. I was dissapointed, was
looking forward to seeing him.

Krome played great tracks but had quite a few train-wrecks.

He had four new sliders added to his mixing bored. He has a stereo pair of
channels that are labels "sucks" and another stereo pair that are labels
"rocks".

If he wants a track to suck, he turns all the "Sucks" sliders up.
If he wants a track to rock, he turns all the "Rocks" sliders up.

Hawtin finally realized that he actually had nothing to do with the
creation

of his music, it was just his gear doing all the work. Besides, it is not a
big deal because he doesn't even make real music in the first place.

If you ever get disenchanted with Hawtin, just go back to the Dimension
Intrusion (LP). I personally think he's an asset. Also it seems he's
enlightened & humble enough to know he's still got stuff to learn ... plus
unlike many, he embraces change. Isn't that what this music's largely about?

all the work, making the music
the art is knowing how to work the gear

"And he replied, 'I don't know"

2002-02-05 Thread Mike Taylor
He had four new sliders added to his mixing bored. He has a stereo pair of
channels that are labels "sucks" and another stereo pair that are labels
"rocks".

If he wants a track to suck, he turns all the "Sucks" sliders up.
If he wants a track to rock, he turns all the "Rocks" sliders up.

Hawtin finally realized that he actually had nothing to do with the creation
of his music, it was just his gear doing all the work. Besides, it is not a
big deal because he doesn't even make real music in the first place.

liner notes.. heh ;)
my comments were from a combination of conversations with him,
articles i've read, and from video clips of the de9:ce & final

in using final scratch more and more, richie has started re-editing,
re-mixing, re-interpreting tracks since he can do so and play them
out almost instantly. he's able to experiment with tracks, and
customize them to a mood, venue, whatever. in doing so, he got the
 idea of going (conceptually speaking) deeper 'into' the tracks;
getting nearer and nearer to the basic elements of each track and
what made it work one way or another. hence, closer to the edit.
final scratch was just an influence on the album, a way of thinking
about the music... so that's what it means.

he said that was probably the best time he's ever had playing in SF.
his set the following night in LA was quite similar.. came on,
floored it for a while, backed off and played some de9:ce tracks, and
then wound up banging it out again - but more funky, like you said.
he snuck in that You Spin Me Round remix, as well as a rework of
Coffee Pot, which kept a little humor and a lot of screaming fans
going for it from beginning to end. they gave him an encore and damn
i wish i knew what that track was!

(but not the drumcode-stiff type bangin', more inna funky vein),
and then almost two hours of beautiful, deep, minimal, bliss. One of
the most emotional sets I've seen him play...There was actual melody!
And no 909 stupidity. I really felt like he's started trying to take
people on a journey again. I thanked him for it afterwards and he said
that he was really into it that night as well.

Maybe the final scratch thing has had a positive effect on his

Re: [313] Hawtin + Aphex Twin -> NY Times

2001-11-05 Thread M. Todd Smith
I'm sure someone will think this is a great article, but with lines like :
___

One song, "Kladfvgbung Micshk," uses a prepared piano for both the rhythm
and the melody, and this suggestion - that a rhythm instrument can have a
melodic value, and vice versa - creates a sense of ambiguity that hovers
over the whole album: we're often not quite sure whether we're hearing a
beat or a tone.
___

WTF! Of course a rhythm instrument can have a melodic value, considering
the writer is paying close attention to RDJ's use of the piano, he/she
should at least know something about the piano, or maybe the guitar, bass,
drums, etc. All rhythm instruments have tones, a beat IS a tone.

I would really like to know what Final Scratch had to do with DE9 2, besides
being an influence on it (whatever that means). The best part of the
article is definitely: (the author is speaking of Hawtin's use of a Phillipe
Cam record)
___
It's a shame there aren't more surprises like that. Too much of "Closer to
the Edit" rushes by without making much of an impression; its amalgamated
thump never shows any signs of letting up.

___

Glad someone is paying attention.

Cheers

maybe im a little bit out of time, but about what are you talking. What new
cd.

Mixed reviews is the consensus. I personally thought musically, the cd
was pretty cool and funky. I've said before that it sounded Studio
One-ish. This series is all about the gear and techniques that goes into
the production of these mixes, not necessarily the music itself,
although some people expected way too much from Richie musically, hence
the mixed reviews.

Makes for nice background music imho.
Flip it on repeat and your set.

Hi there,
haven't posted to the list for quite some time as I've had very little
to say about Ritchie Hawtin

That's a cue for a Richie debate if ever I heard one : )

I caught both Magda & Hawtin's set's at The End last w/e. I went in
open-minded
as I'd never heard Magda before and had only heard Hawtin about 4 times
previously.
After all the debate about weather or not Magda can DJ I found that she is
quite good at mixing (no mistakes) but I didn't really enjoy her selection.
I
didn't know any of the tracks but they seemed to be average to me ("Dry" was
the
term a friend used.)
Hawtin played a 6 hour set. To be honest I found it quite boring. I've
enjoyed
previous sets from him but this just seemed to be one minimal track blended
smoothly into another minimal track. There seemed to be a lack of variety,
nothing that really stood out.
Where was the madness? Where was the darkness? How about some deck skills?
What
about the funk? It was all too serious (cold & clinical.) I think Professor
Hawtin needs to spend less time in the studio and maybe even go out for a
dance
one night to remember what it's like to be the other side of the DJ booth.
I'm going to hear him again at Atomic Jam alongside Luke Slater this month
so
he's got another chance to impress, I just hope he can prove me wrong.
