Good Morning Anthony---I'm sorry I was not able to grab Maxie for you on Saturday---after I left I too along with my daughter and grandson went out on a search for Maxie looking in the area and I will continue to keep my eye out for her.Just a little reassurance my dog went missing twice once for about a month and on Christmas Day when we returned home he was sitting on my porch. Another time he went missing for a couple of days and when I was coming home from work I saw a little boy walking him as if he belonged to him. 2 years ago, most of these kids were in the Pop Warner program! They're really special! This year, the Turkey Day game will be played in Neptune. It's an old rivalry! I know, because for years, I took one boy from Asbury and one from Neptune to Breakfast at 6:00 AM in the morning, down to the old L M Diner, on the Asbury Circle. Mr, Conti, the former coach of Asbury Park, then coaching for Ocean Township knew me from my coaching days in Neptune. My 5 kids, went through the Neptune program and are still friends with their old rivals, who if they won, would come to my Neptune home, eat and brag all day or it was wait until next year. I saw a special on HBO about Ohio State adn Michigan. Now THAT's a rivalry. My rival, when I attended Xavier Prep, was St. Augustine's, Home of the Marching 100. Not only did my high school beat them for 4 consecutive years, but I was once married to one of their football players! Our Gold and White High School Band beat theirs, back then, too! We wore the Pope's colors, so we knew we were special! So much for marrying a Catholic! High School prepares kids, for the real world. At least it did, when I was a student. I had never heard of gangs before, mostly because I was raised under a rock! The things a kid has to do to fit in, today, makes me wince! For some of these kids, this will be their last big thing. They certainly will have something to tell thier kids, in later years, if they get to live that long. I certainly support anything this town, wishes to do! --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, dsher4 [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: here's a thought regarding taxpayer money or funds raised by citizens/mm/asbury partners. There are GPS-based and radio-wave based collars where you can do live tracking (GPS via the internet of GSM mobile phone and radio-wave to a remote). GPS has a longer range and is more accurate. The problem for me (or Louie) is the weight of the units. I think the smallest GPS is 5 ounces. They are recommended for pets over 12 lbs and he, at 6 lbs is smaller than most cats. Yahoo! [AsburyPark] Re: Hamilton Acquitted
Kerry that is the dumbest conspiracy theory ever floated on this board. If John is aquitted, then I suspect it is exactly as I called it the day he was arrested - he appeared to have been entrapped. I saw a prosecutor from the US attorney's office practically brag about it on News 9 (and I called John and alerted him to it). When the Operation Bid Rig defendants went down, John was such a stand out. Most of the rest were Northern Monmouth Republicans who all knew one another and all took actual cash (although as time went by, more Monmouth Democrats were arrested). John had nothing to do with them and took no cash. Steffer, it appeared, was sent out to look for trouble, and seems to have fabricated the trouble himself with John. That's the gravaman of entrapment. The timing of the trial is excellent for an aquittal. Not just because people have big hearts at Thanksgiving - they are also busy. To find someone guilty, a jury has to go through the jury charge meticulously and make plenty of positve findings. That takes time. For a Not Guilty they don't, so fast verdicts usually means good news for a defendant. The jury got the case at 10:30. If they are done already, it looks good for John. Kerry there is no motive. There is no why this happened to John Hamilton. You are still stuck on the idea that someone with an ulterior motive was tryng to get to him. Sometimes good police work goes too far, despite the best of intentions. That's what happened here. Bid Rig was a huge county- wide operation that started in 1999. Hamilton was not an intentional target of anyone (except Steffer). I was very uncomfortable reading about how the FBI sent Duke Steffer out to do the investigation himself about who might be willing to take a bribe and who might not be. That just sounds like a license for Steffer to set people up. Considering that Steffer is a lying, cheating felon, certainly I believe that guy could go too far. I think he did with John. In fact, in political circles around Monmouth, there are many people right now privately telling stories how Steffer tried to initiate contact with them, or even hand them money, but fortunatly, they turned him down. I don't blame John. One Sunday I was sitting on my couch watching football, and two strangers knocked on my door. The said they were doing a driveway down the street, and offered to seal mine with the leftover materials for $80.00. I let them. That's probably all that happened with John. Unfortunatly for him, the guy at his door was Steffer. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, kerrymbutch [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: John Hamilton was charged with conspiracy. [AsburyPark] E Street's Van Zandt has Drawn Up a High School Music Curriculum
Steven Van Zandt remembers the moment: “It was the beginning of my life.” Adapted from _The Segmented Society - New York Times_ (http://www.nytimes.com/2007/11/20/opinion/20brooks.html?emex=1195707600en=db8743281d410063ei=5087 ) By _DAVID BROOKS_ (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/opinion/editorialsandoped/oped/columnists/davidbrooks/index.html?inline=nyt-per) , Op-Ed Columnist, November 20, 2007 Van Zandt fell for the Beatles and discovered the blues and early rock music that inspired them. He played in a series of bands on the Jersey shore, and when a friend wanted to draw on his encyclopedic blues knowledge for a song called “Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out,” Van Zandt wound up as a guitarist for Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band Van Zandt grew up in one era and now thrives in the other, but how long can mega-groups like the E Street Band still tour? “This could be the last time,” he says. He argues that if the Rolling Stones came along now, they wouldn’t be able to get mass airtime because there is no broadcast vehicle for all-purpose rock. And he says that most young musicians don’t know the roots and traditions of their music. They don’t have broad musical vocabularies to draw on when they are writing songs. As a result, much of their music (and here I’m bowdlerizing his language) stinks. He describes a musical culture that has lost touch with its common roots. And as he speaks, I hear the echoes of thousands of other interviews concerning dozens of other spheres Van Zandt has a way to counter all this, at least where music is concerned. He’s drawn up a high school music curriculum that tells American history through music. It would introduce students to Muddy Waters, the Mississippi Sheiks, Bob Dylan and the Allman Brothers. He’s trying to use music to motivate and engage students, but most of all, he is trying to establish a canon, a common tradition that reminds students that they are inheritors of a long conversation. And Van Zandt is doing something that is going to be increasingly necessary for foundations and civic groups. We live in an age in which the technological and commercial momentum drives fragmentation. It’s going to be necessary to set up countervailing forces — institutions that span social, class and ethnic lines. Music used to do this. Not so much anymore. Stuff like this illustrates the idea that Asbury Park could really capitalize on developing it's reputation as a breeding ground for great music and musicians, as well as showcasing our musical history, and bringing more clubs on line to expand both the types of music one can go to hear live, as well as giving bands, both local and and national new and exciting places to play. Asbury Park could literally become one big School of Rock, very similar to Austin TX and Seattle. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, arcman210 [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I heard about this a few months ago, it really is a great idea and I hope it catches on across the country and soon. [AsburyPark] Re: Van Zandt's School Music - We're a bit late
Jack we are a bit late with this idea. You might recall my biggest gripe (we all have one) is how Asbury Park High School was segregated by race back in 1996. Well, they did it with Music. Isn't that ironic? You want to use music to help Asbury, and the state used it to hurt Asbury. Asbury Park's High School sending districts were from Deal down Belmar, including Interlaken, excluding Loch Arbor. That kept the school racially desegregated, and it was also the natural state of things - those were always the sending districts. 1996 was when the Commission of Education ruled that Red Bank Regional's music program so exceeded Asbury Park's, that APHS students could go to RBR for the music program instead. Nearly all of them from the sending districts did. Damn near every student that got accepted was white (not RBR's fault; that's who applied). APHS became racially segregated overnight. Well, its grown beyond our control, now. RBR's Performing Arts program is so big now (and it's a great program from what I hear) they are taking kids from all over the county. Add to that other towns have started their own. In Howell we have a concentrated performing arts program. I hear approximately 600 students apply for 23 seats. The RBR ruling by the commmissioner was a coffin nail for APHS. Only a federal civil rights lawsuit challenging the ruling based upon de facto segregation can change it. I've been singing that song for almost a decade, to everyone who ever ran for board of education in AP. They think its worth following up on when they are running for office. They forget it after election day. No one's listening. No one cares. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, Jack Pitzer [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Stuff like this illustrates the idea that Asbury Park could really capitalize on developing it's reputation as a breeding ground for great music and musicians, as well as showcasing our musical history, and bringing more clubs on line to expand both the types of music one can go to hear live, as well as giving bands, both local and and national new and exciting places to play. [AsburyPark] Re: Van Zandt's School Music - We're a bit late
The opening of OTHS was certainly a big blow to Asbury, but it was self imposed. They asked for one seat on the Board of Ed because they had as many students in APHS as we did. In the worst decision ever made by AP, the Board of Ed turned OT down. So they built their own high school. I have no qualms with that. That's their right. Asbury still had enough white students for the school to be desegregated, and that was the natural state of things. The decision regarding RBR had minimal impact on other school districts. They primarly took from Asbury's sending districts, and they took all the white kids. That wasn't replicated in any other school. But like I said, no one cares. Folks will just continue to minimize it. I'm starting to care less too. 10 years of being the only one to see it and complain about it gets pretty frustrating. Not so minimal if you worked, as I did, at one of the schools which lost students to RBR during the 1990's declining enrollment period. The additional loss of students who wanted an enriched arts program had a ripple effect across the curriculum: budgets, staffing, loss of other elective programs, RIFs, et al. It may not have been a racial imbalance problem, but it wasn't minimal. Unintended consequences: Can't blame parents who wanted full arts instruction, or RBR for taking the lead, going against the grain by upgrading their program rather than cutting it. In the worst decision ever made by AP, the Board of Ed turned OT down. So they built their own high school. That could be. Go look at a before and after year book at Monmouth Regional, and one from Asbury Park. Monouth Regional's changes don't even show. Asbury Park's changes are incredible. One whole race has been excised from the school. You can't even compare the two. Dan, how about analyzing the population shift in general over that period. Deal can't even maintain their own k-8 school let alone send to AP. They basically have no studdent population - same for Allenhurst and last Loch Arbor (OT), Now you know Belmar almost always sent to St. Rose, Allenhurst to RBC, Itnerlaken wither RBC or St Rose since most of these towns were either Irish Cath or Italian or a good mix of the 2. AP has had the OPPORTUNITY with over 1 billion in state aid to build a superior program but failed for one reason or the other. Skip the race issue. No reason a single race school can't excel. You don't need white kids to make the rest smarter. What the REAL problem is in Monmouth County as a whole is that the quality of education overall has diminshed (my opinion). At least in OT. Why can't all kids have the SAME opportunity for a HIGHER level of education/programs offered i the speciality schools which, as you pointed out, IS NOT open to all residents. You have to apply and hope your kid didn't f-up along the way. Make all the schools strict and fund more programs and enforce strict policies as to learning and discipline instead of letting kids skate along? The issue has nothing to do with race. I Yahoo! Go complain to the Katrina victims that your basement once flooded after it rained. That's about what you are doing now by comparing the complete excision of the white race from APHS to a couple of late board of education meetings over parental anxiety at Monmouth Regional. It's exactly thinking like that which hides the severity of what the kids in Asbury Park are going through because of that decision - racial segregation. Of course you live there and I don't, so if nothing continues to get done about it, it's not my kids that suffer, its yours. So go ahead and think what you want about it. That's about what you are doing now by comparing the complete excision of the white race from APHS You're missing my point with that insidious analogy. The '96 decision to allow students from other districts to attend RBR _http://www.state.nj.us/education/legal/sboe/1997/asbpk.pdf_ (http://www.state.nj.us/education/legal/sboe/1997/asbpk.pdf)was not the straw that broke the proverbial camel's back in AP. to a couple of late board of education meetings over parental anxiety at Monmouth Regional. It wasn't Monmouth Regional. And it wasn't parental anxiety. For the BOE, It was tuition money that went to RBR; for the staff, loss of other elective programs and jobs; for angry parents, why we didn't offer enhanced programs regardless of cost (as opposed to taxpayers without school-age children). It's exactly thinking like that which hides the severity of what the kids in Asbury Park are going through because of that decision - racial segregation. Of course you live there and I don't, so if nothing continues to get done about it, it's not my kids that suffer, its yours. So go ahead and think what you want about it. Why should I care? If you're trying to label me as insensitive to racial issues, you're way off base. Quite the opposite. To put it bluntly, I believe white flight, which started way before that RBR decision, caused many of our problems here. Your issue is an oversimplification. I had maybe two or three whites in my classes at APHS way before 1996. And I've never regretted not having fled from Asbury Park. So let's just agree that Asbury Park's schools need a dedicated BOE, administration, and faculty, and look forward to support those who fit that bill. It's your point, so how about you analyze it? If you are going to suggest to me that the sending districts have less high school aged students now than in 1996, I'm calling shenanigans. Show me that I'm wrong. Your points about the various towns are wrong. There were plenty of students from each of those towns when I went to APHS and later when I taught there. Like I said - go check the yearbooks. You will see the few years before this ruling, when RBR started the program, a great drop off of white students, and then a full scale vanishing afterward. AP has had the OPPORTUNITY with over 1 billion in state aid to build a superior program but failed for one reason or the other. $1 bilion? I don't think your number is right. Abbott funding is 10 years old. We got $56 million last year. I don't think we got $1 Billion over 10 years. But I'm no expert. Could be wrong. Show me. I've seen you complain of AP's Abbott money before. I think the funding formula is bad too. However: In the 50 years before Abbott funding, when the Feds made us house the poor here in Federal Housing, and sent us barely anything in education money, Asbury Park lost millions upon millions of dollars for 50 years. In that whole 50 years, I don't recall anyone from Asbury turning to the folks in Ocean and demanding that they kick in for Asbury handling a federal problem. Yet you sure do complain alot now that your on the losing side of the money. If you want to blame Abbott funding, I'm with you. Blame Asbury? Forget it. Everyone still owes us for that 50 years. Skip the race issue. Thankfully Thurgood Marshall thought differently. He didn't skip the race issue. See Brown v Board of Education. No reason a single race school can't excel. Agreed, but since Asbury Park High School was not naturally a single race school, why bus the white kids out and make it an unnatural single race school? You don't need white kids to make the rest smarter. Agreed again, but what of the benefits of diversity, both racial and economic? Have those concepts been abandoned? Well, as evidenced by that ruling that 10 years worth of AP Board of Education members have been too stupid to challange, apparantly so. Very much so have those ideas been abandoned in Asbury Park. Also, liberal activists of yesteryear would never have sat still and let a state sponsored segregation of a school stand. Today's liberal activists care more for trees and polar bears than people, as RFK and MLK turn in their respective graves. Yahoo! TD, You and I can both stop, take residence in AP, and stick our kids there. but we haven't. I'd take a gamble on those beers that Deal, Allenhurst, Belmar have LESS HS age kids eligible to go to AP. Then you have determine why those parents CHOOSE to send their kids to a private school, parochial school or to a county speciality school. IT's choice. You and I have made it as well, by choosing to live in towns other then AP with a schools that are well diversified in race and incomes - that being Howell and OT. OT and Howell are not the same as in 1996 nor in are they in our era of the late 70's either. In '75 my class (8th grade) had 3 african american students - and I can name them. In '79 I could still name a few more african american students. And I;m saying I can name them as a good thing casue we were all friends. I can say today the make-up of the the student body, at least in OT, is about as diversified as it can be on all levels - race, incomes, family status etc. As such, in my view, the teaching methods have changed dramatically. I wish I could convince my son to go to CBA, and I'd be willing to pay. It's school. Not a playground. They'll kick your ass out as fast as they cashed your check. As for qualifying to go to a speciality school, you shouldnt have to. Yahoo! [AsburyPark] 10 hours on I-95
Gives you many minutes to ponder. RE: AP needs money: All the ideas presented were execellent. Here is one that, because of the new people in the building dept., is underway. It is, become much, much, much more developer friendly. When we undertook the makeover of the 300 block of 4th Ave, possibly the worst block in the city, the city cost us at least 12 months. Between fighting for permits, getting harassed by zoning, and zero help from anyone in city hall, 2 condo projects that could have meant over 90 new tax paying homeowners, the delays caused our sales to start right when the market started to turn. Instead of welcoming the developers, Fasano, Sigmund and Gifford, they were treated as if they were thieves in the night. City officials should have celebrated the projects and got behind them. The end result, 304 4th ave ended up in auctions and, sadly, the building is reverting to the mess that it was prior to our cleaning in up. I am a very big fan of Terry Reidy, but I put the bulk of the blame on him. Despite our constant begging of him to step in and assist us, he did not. Yes, we deserve a portion of the blame. Stupid arrogance did get in the way. But when you venture millions of your own money, albeit to make money, there should be some give and take. Again, I believe if we started this project under the new building department personnel, the project would have evolved the way we imagined. RE: Hamilton and the drfiveway. I had the same thing happen to me. Gypsy pavers offered to pave my driveway(in Oceanport) for $700. Once they got started it became $3200. I threw them off my property and have enjoyed the hald a driveway they paved. RE: House of Blues. I ask you, is there anyone more connected than our very own Dan S? RE: Moving city hall to the west side. How is this not a no brainer? The West Side of AP has been neglected since day 1. The people who live there have earned and deserve this. Get the project moving and eff the whole idea of a redevelopment poroject. Make the vacant land available, make it available to minority buyers t incredible incentives and get the governing ding bats out of the way and allow captalism, you all remember good old American capitalism, to take over. within a very short period of time, Springwood Ave and the West Side will be transformed into a vibrant, money making community. The nicest people live on the west side, again, they deserve this. RE:The Baronet. Fishman bought the theater promisin(at council meetings) and to the seller, Fasano, that he would keep the Baronet going. He chased us away and the theater is quickly falling into the state it was in when we bought it. I tried to discuss the logical idea of developing the Baronet, Fast Lane and Asbury Lanes, along with the Pryor Pavillion, into what it is. Agenuine Historical Arts District that would be a great tourist draw for the entire city. Larry Fishman refuse my calls, never returned a acall, and when I did finally get to speak with him, he continued his lying ways. The most important thing that can happen is for thsi lying, no account piece fo garbage to be ridden out of Asbury on a rail. He has done the city immeasurable harm. Thankfully, we were able to broach the idea to Gary Mottolla and he was morfe than receptive. Again, Fishman remains in the way. RE: The Blue Bishop football team. Get behind them. These guys, despite the overwhelming odds, are the epitome of champions. While we're at it, we should embrace APHS's glorious sports tradition. The men and woman who excelled are all getting old, there should be something done to preserve the unbelievalble APHS sports tradition. Happy Thanksgiving, I hope the dog finds his way home. Yahoo!
