These are the kind of words that prove your ignorance in that anyone who doesn't agree with your views is the problem. Nazi-right? Anyone who isn't a liberal democrat who supports Barack Obama is a nazi, I guess. Well I see where you're coming from. Its okay for you to call me part of the nazi-right, even though I'm a moderate and not a conservative (but you assume otherwise because I'm not voting for your savior). But if I were to call you a communist, you'd probably be offended and claim you were just a liberal. Typical double standard stereotyping. I wouldn't do that... I would just call you ignorant for assuming anyone who doesn't agree with Springsteen's politics is a neo-conservative right winged nazi. I'm not a nazi... I'm not a right wing conservative. You're putting words in my mouth and stereotyping me because I said I dont want to hear a political rant at a concert. If I were a Ted Nugent fan, or a ZZ Top fan, and they ranted conservative politics at a concert of theirs which I went to, I would want them to shut the hell up and sing too... but I'm not a fan of their music enough where I would go to see them in concert anyway. In fact, all of the concerts I go to are usually with Democratic supporting artists. Springsteen rants at his show. Billy Joel and Bon Jovi are also two huge Democrats, but they keep their mouth shut, and theres not a few parts of their show where half of the audience is just sighing wishing they would cut the crap and do what the audience paid them over $100 to do... and thats perform their music. Freedom of speech is freedom of speech... if a performer or artist thinks he or she can save the world with his political views, and wants to look like an idiot doing it, then by all means let that person do whatever he or she wants. But in my book, they just look ignorant. Bruce Springsteen, Ted Nugent, or whoever wants to look like a moron in alot of their fans eyes can do whatever they want... but its dumb to assume that because someone is a fan of their music means they have to listen to their politics. JR, What about the song Bruce wrote, when the 3M plant in Freehold closed? What about the song from the movie, Philadelphia Story, about a gay man who contracts aids and fights to keep his job. Brings tears to my eyes, just thinking about the cruelty of the heart this film evokes. Bruce sings of all that is wrong and then sings of being Born In The USA, which evokes all the positive attributes of being born here! Guess that's okay huh, JR? So, he shouldn't care about what is happening, not only in NJ but the rest of the country? I prefer Bruce's happy songs! Everybody loves happy! He can also evoke emotions that ponder an answer. Re: [AsburyPark] Re: Shut Up and Sing
The song was in part a tribute to Springsteen's friends who had experienced the Vietnam War, some of whom did not come back; it also protests the hardships Vietnam veterans faced upon their return from the war. The song's narrative traces the protagonist's working-class origins, induction into the armed forces, and disaffected return back to the States. An anguished lyrical interlude is even more jolting, describing the fate of the protagonist's (literal or figurative) brother (in some recordings or live shows, the word brother is replaced with buddy): I had a brother at Khe Sanh Fighting off the Viet Cong They're still there, he's all gone He had a woman he loved in Saigon I got a picture of him in her arms now The Battle of Khe Sanh involved the North Vietnamese Army, not the National Front for the Liberation of South Vietnam heard in the song lyrics. Eventually the Americans prevailed and broke the siege, only to withdraw from the outpost a couple of months later. Khe Sanh thus became one of the media symbols of the futility of the whole war effort in the States. In late August 1984, the Born in the U.S.A. album was selling very well, its songs were all over the radio, and the associated tour was drawing considerable press. Springsteen shows at the Capital Centre outside of Washington, D.C. thus attracted even more media attention, in particular from CBS Evening News correspondent Bernard Goldberg, who saw Springsteen as a modern-day Horatio Alger story. Yet more notably, the widely-read conservative columnist George Will, after attending a show, published on September 13, 1984 a piece entitled A Yankee Doodle Springsteen in which he praised Springsteen as an exemplar of classic American values. He wrote: I have not got a clue about Springsteen's politics, if any, but flags get waved at his concerts while he sings songs about hard times. He is no whiner, and the recitation of closed factories and other problems always seems punctuated by a grand, cheerful affirmation: 'Born in the U.S.A.!' The 1984 presidential campaign was in full stride at the time, and Will had connections to President Ronald Reagan's re-election organization. Will thought that Springsteen might endorse Reagan, and got the notion pushed up to high-level Reagan advisor Michael Deaver's office. Those staffers made inquiries to Springsteen's management which were politely rebuffed. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Born_in_the_U.S.A._(song) Nevertheless, on September 19, 1984, at a campaign stop in Hammonton, New Jersey, Reagan added the following to his usual stump speech: America's future rests in a thousand dreams inside your hearts; it rests in the message of hope in songs so many young Americans admire: New Jersey's own Bruce Springsteen. And helping you make those dreams come true is what this job of mine is all about. The campaign press immediately expressed skepticism that Reagan knew anything about Springsteen, and asked what his favorite Springsteen song was; Born to Run was the tardy response from staffers. Johnny Carson then joked on The Tonight Show, If you believe that, I've got a couple of tickets to the Mondale-Ferraro inaugural ball I'd like to sell you. During a September 22 concert in Pittsburgh, Springsteen responded negatively by introducing his song Johnny 99, a song about an unemployed auto worker who turns to murder, The President was mentioning my name the other day, and I kinda got to wondering what his favorite album musta been. I don't think it was the Nebraska album. I don't think he's been listening to this one. A few days after that, presidential challenger Walter Mondale said, Bruce Springsteen may have been born to run but he wasn't born yesterday, and then claimed to have been endorsed by Springsteen. Springsteen manager Jon Landau denied any such endorsement, and the Mondale campaign issued a correction. You raise good points about generating income, but I don't think that everyone who has a problem with the containers could fairly be described as sad assed. Impressions matter and shipping containers can't help but have a temporary, and thus incomplete, quality about them. They bear a striking resemblance to those trailers you see in the parking lots of schools that can't afford to expand to accommodate their bigger student populations. There is a doing the best we can quality that people associate with those trailers and some people might also associate that with the boardwalk containers. Now, after years of the boardwalk being a ghost town, yes, obviously anything that generates revenue is a step up. And you have a legitimate opinion about creativity and providing opportunities for small biz owners. But some people might look at the oceanfronts of the other towns nearby and legitimately ask, Why does Asbury Park's boardwalk have to be the one that looks like a permanent construction site? This doesn't make them sad assed. It just means they want the town they love to strive for what they see as the best rather than settling for doing the best we can. Yahoo! On Saturday, Bruce Springsteen kicked off three days of Vote For Change concerts on behalf of Barack Obama with a powerful acoustic set that drew estimated 50,000 to the Ben Franklin Parkway in Philadelphia. Cutting a distinctly Woody Guthriesque profile in rolled up flannel, denim and tousled hair, Springsteen stood atop a 30 foot high stage emblazoned with the word “CHANGE” and belted out a seven-song, 45 minute acoustic set as a gift for Obama volunteers and a catalyst for the disengaged to register to vote. Plenty of people heard the call — according to the Obama campaign, some 21,000 new voters were registered as a result of the event. http://tinyurl.com/4mg546 “I’m not Barack Obama, but I’ll do my best,” said Springsteen, before wheezing his harmonica like an angry freight train launching into a tense, jingle-jangle reading of “The Promised Land,” his 1978 affirmation of faith in the ideal American in a time of dwindling opportunity and diminished expectations. Four songs later — including a like-minded “The Ghost Of Tom Joad,” the obligatory “Thunder Road” and the rarely-heard “Does This Bus Stop At 82nd Street?” — Bruce spoke humbly about why he believes in Barack Obama. “I’ve spent most of my creative life measuring the distance between that American promise and American reality. The distance between that promise and that reality has never been greater or more painful. I believe Senator Obama has taken the measure of that distance in his own life and in his work. I believe as president, he would work to restore that promise to so many of our fellow citizens who have justifiably lost faith in its meaning.” After a mournful rendition of Woody Guthrie’s “This Land Is Your Land,” Springsteen sent the people back out onto the streets with marching orders to take their country back from “those who who would sell it down the river for a quick buck.” Yahoo! Re: [AsburyPark] Re: Wesley Lake Railings
I saw the railings a few days ago. I took some pictures to post on here, but never got around to posting them. Maybe I'll do that later today. They look good in my opinion. I don't think that area near the lake is ready to be opened just because the railings are up. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] Yahoo! [AsburyPark] Re: That Other Election
Sandpiper, Asbury is run under the Faulkner Act, which I can never keep up with to make sense, but I'm sure one of our learned posters will aid and abet me! I'm too lazy to Google it. All I know is, the residents don't vote like they should! 17-18 thousand people here and the best you can get is about 3000 votes, if that! I hear a lot of whining, (present company included), about what's wrong here, but I don't fight anymore; too tired! Hey, I'd be happy if they'd just install a camera in Library Park! I Bit*h about Black people, how unfair life is, yada, yada, etc., but I feel that I can't change anything, trust me, I've tried! I'm in my 60's and tired of beating a dead horse! I still dream a world, treat people fairly and am trying to leave everyone alone; except here, of course! Wish the East Indians in the Post Office spoke clear English, etc. You apparently don't live here, but love the City. We all do in our own teeny way. Hey, if you can do something to enhance life here, state it! Yo JR: You apparently know something I don't about Kramer! In this very building former Mayor Kramer lived on the 15th Floor with his Filipino Wife! Many police Officers still live here, Firemen and City workers. That's why I made sure to write this is all very unscientific, but might it be that property owners tend to be more compelled toward public service? I emphasize tend there. I'm sure there are plenty of apartment dwellers working for the city. I was hoping someone would fill in the factual blanks to my speculation and you did, so thank you for that. So what do you think is the best way to make sure all residents are equally represented in city government? Could a ward system work? Something else? Yahoo! Sharon - I'm glad somebody read that report. I'm happy for Mark Kinmon and the others, but 17, at least, gang affiliated thugs in the local area doesn't make me feel warm and fuzzy. A couple months ago, I had to buy a couple garbage cans ... Went to the HD and youhad about 4 choices. The cheaper rubber maid ones where the lids get out of shape (square) or the squirrels eventually chew through (round) or the larger ones heavier plastic with the lids nice hinge, but more $. The last choice were the metal ones. 1. I knew no one in my house would drag them out to the street since there were no wheels 2. I didn't want to look at ugly metal garbage cans in front of my house. But I did think of repainting them really odd colors. There you go. A business. Go buy a bunch of metal garbage cans and spray them all kinds of cool colors. Market them as as green as they may be made from recycled stuff and can always be recycled again. Yahoo! The trash collectors have a habit of banging the cans against the truck in an effort to 'unpack' the contents. Plastic cans retain their shapre while the metal cans do not. These failed along the seams. I've got two plastic sears trash cans from 1963. Yahoo! your right, i shouldn't have said sad assed. i just truly get exhausted with the complaints. i can't judge anyone for slow progress, and all i have seen on the superficial level is progress. what many seem to gripe about is the superficial level. excluding you Werner. i assumed it was all an AP Partners/MM menage. if the city does own it and isn't gaining any revenue its beat. and the leadership is failing. but who the hell knows what deals have been made. i feel like there is lots of speculation here without hard facts. so its pointless to debate what is happening. asbury IS in the middle of change. i just don't get all the impatience and i KNOW people are enjoying it here and spending money. i am. i hope you all are. a wand cannot be waved and asbury will be glistening. and with the economy the way it is (sp down another 5% today) patience will behoove you. they don't look that bad. they did business. i saw a couple dancing on the boardwalk at the cuban place.. [AsburyPark] Re: Shut Up and Sing
Thank you for clearing up, what I was trying to say. Yes, flags are waved when he sings of something so American, that in spite of it, (the war), we'll still wave it, not because the government was right; they weren't with Viet Nam or these 2 wars in Iraq and Afghanistan! In my opinion, it's what makes us all Americans and patriots! To protest, is patriotic, because you are expressing yourself and making a personal statement, that you don't have to walk in lockstep, to be a patriot, a word so confusing now. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, Jersey Shore John [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: The song was in part a tribute to Springsteen's friends who had experienced the Vietnam War, some of whom did not come back; it also protests the hardships Vietnam veterans faced upon their return from the war. [AsburyPark] Re: That Other Election
I resided in Neptune, when all of this was going on and didn't care what happened here, as they were Neptune's cross-town rivals. My kids were scholar-athletes and I was running a tight ship at home. Maybe my Catholic upbringing had a lot to do with how well my kids did, but to this day, as short as I am, none of my kids have ever disrespected me, the way I see kids are doing today. I thought Kramer was a dirty old man, because his second wife, had not too long graduated from Neptune, herself! He had grown kids, when he married this girl. I knew her and her family, because she had younger siblings, who grew up with my kids. He was always in the newspapers, flamboyant and showy! There were always scandals in Asbury and the folks in Neptune thought that the politics here was shady! Not my words, because all I ever heard was bad things about Asbury. When Jannerone was the schools superintendant, there was a big hullaballoo over the golden parachute he received when he retired. It was in the high 90 thousands! Unheard of in the 80's! The kids in Asbury needed remedial classes in college for the bad education, then, (mid-80's). I believe Mr. Mann replaced him? Correct me, if I'm wrong. I just passed my 38th year, here in Monmouth County. Not much I don't remember. [AsburyPark] Re: APPress Reports 5 Arrested Reputed Gang Members
You're Welcome! There will be other arrests Maureen. I'm sure of it. It's a vicious cycle that I've seen over and over and not just in this area. Lakewood and Long Branch come to mind. Urban areas where drugs are prolific, unchecked and leads to violence. I never hear of a bust in Deal or Spring Lake but the drugs are as much there as here. In New York, one only has to stroll down Wall St. to get a fix! That's where the drugs are! --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, radio881gal [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Sharon - I'm glad somebody read that report. I don't know what the difference is between a member and an associate, but I bet the distinction wouldn't mean much to someone thinking of buying here. I'm glad Milgram came to show support and I think Valentin is doing a much better job than his predecessor. Get your point about the black faces. That's why so many people don't realize they harbor racist notions. The subliminal messages are everywhere. Racism is the norm. Let's get a look at some of the buyers. Aren't they equally as guilty? Re: [AsburyPark] How to Respond to A Heckler
The soldiers in Iraq are NOT fighting for our freedoms. Who knows, at this point, WHAT they're fighting for. We didn't get the oil. There's no democracy. Our freedoms were never the point. Of the 7,000 reasons the Bushies made up, week after week. Besides, our freedoms do not emanate from military efforts or from the Pentagon. Our constitution is not under attack in Iraq. Speaking of Palin's Nazi Rallies and her Nazi-ettes. This lame comeback is hardly the top story about her today. They all had someting on it - rides, mini-g etc. They were all LEASED OUT by the city, in competitive (funny word) bidding (sealed bids). Today, unless there is some compensation we don't know about, the city gets ZERO for use of the green spaces which generate income for the owners and they collect rent.
