Not a plow in sight.

This is the worst snow response I have ever seen in 30 years here. And
there have been similar storms. Looking around, it appears that Sunset Ave and
Park Ave across the lake from me are also snow-bound.

The risk from lack of access is huge... there is no way fire and emergency
services to help people in parts of the City if needed.

My conclusion over the past several years that Asbury Park is
dysfunctional appears to be panning out on many levels.

Got a pic of Sue Henderson taking the oath and sound files for most of
the meeting, including the new appointments and reappointments to
committees and, of course, the public portion.
I put the mp3 recorder right up next to clerk Steve Kay, so you can
actually hear what he's saying now. That's important because most
times all you hear from the council is move it, pass, yes...etc. This
way you can hear what they're approving.

Corzine to NJ mayors: Expect less from state
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS • January 14, 2009
* TRENTON — Gov. Jon S. Corzine says the amount of aid the state
funnels to towns and schools will almost certainly shrink in the next budgetary
year.
Corzine told a group of mayors today that he'll be hard-pressed to sustain aid
to municipalities, schools, and perhaps hospitals and higher education for the
fiscal year that starts July 1.

The governor says he won't know how much less aid there will be for towns until
the state gets a better idea of how much tax revenue it's lost because of the
recession.

Corzine is urging the Legislature to approve his proposal allowing towns to
defer this year's contribution to the state worker pension fund, which would
save them $540 million.

The move is meant to stave off huge property tax increases.

The proposal was pulled from the Senate agenda last month after it became clear
it didn't have enough votes to pass. But the Senate's expected to take it up
again before the Assembly considers the bill.

What's in the dumpster?

They believe that some kind of toxic waste was buried along with it.

Great info! Wasn't online for 2 days, but watched an expose' that
dealt with homeowners and renters being evicted from homes! (News 12
NJ). Very sad, in the case of renters who are paid up only to be
given eviction notices because the owner defaulted. It's against the
law to evict a renter, simply because the owner defaulted. Didn't
know that and renters should attend whatever workshops available.

When school closed for the holidays, a disabled woman, renting told me
a story about her landlord not providing heat. This was when the temp
was down to 14-19 degrees. I advised her to call Fair Housing in
Freehold and to file a complaint with the Asbury Park Police, for the
record.

Also Code enforcement in City Hall should have been notified. It's
criminal to deprive someone of heat and/or hot water! The lady didn't
seem to know what her options were. She is on Section 8 and I
informed her that Uncle Sam had already paid her rent, so under the
law, she should complain to them, also. Code Enforcement will send a
representative over to the address and survey any violations, contact
the landlord and give them X days, hours or whatever to fix these
problems.

Re: [AsburyPark] Re: OMG - WTF - Again !

2008-10-28 Thread denise
Good Morning Tommy I know you were addressing Sharon, but I thought I jump in
and give my two cents.

First of all congratulations on the win---All of our teams were undefeated
until the lost to Howell.  I was on vacation and did not attend the game but I
heard it was a good game.

The names are not new and not considered traditional.  I named my daughters
what I thought was at the time unique names.  I did not want the traditional
names like Denise, Sara, Amy, Joanne, Katie.
(Taniya,Tivona,Tamara,Tierra,Tayana) I wanted to be creative.  If you look at
their names you see they all begin with T and end with a and they all have 6
letters.  Their middle names are traditional (Michelle, Danielle)
In my opinion I think the next generation after me started naming
children after what they thought were muslims names with some adjustments .
Some also took traditional names and added letters to make it different for
instance Shawn became(Eshawn,DeShawn, DaShawn, MyShawn). Then some went in my
opinion overboard with names that probably made it hard for the child to
pronounce like Ashanasia, Ashaquasia then some names became probably like the
names you discovered on that list --only for the child to be given a nickname
that was easy to pronounce.  Also the late 80-90's generation considered the
traditional names as slave names.

I don't think the idea was to be as you say deliberately separate because I
would say to you what makes the names like Tommy and Denise, Concetta right and
the names like Ashanasia, DaShawn, Chiquetta wrong.  Generations have their own
trends. What we thought was right in our younger years is not what is
considered right to today. Most young people have they're own mindset these
days that's why you now see spiked hair-, you see the gothic look, you see the
pants hanging off.  Do I agree with the new trends no.  But you also have seen
the comeback of pedal pushers(capri pants) mini dresses , penny loafers.

But at the same time a certain name has hurt some people.  Someone could have a
master's degree and have graduated at the top of her class but because her name
on the application for employment was Shamika she was never even considered for
the job.

I grew up with Sharon's children even though they are a couple of years younger
than myself I also grew up with James(Butch) Butler who lived around the block
from me even though he was older.  I also went to school with John Loffredo
sister.

I grew up in Belmar then Neptune now Asbury Park.  What is going on in any
community right now.  I work in Freehold and it used to be that when you heard
a car pulling up besides you in traffic blasting rap music with the base so
strong you could feel your heart beating in your chest I thought it would have
be an young African American, but instead it was a young White American.  The
younger generation are coming together more, I also see young kids of all
colors walking around with their pants hanging off so it is not just in the
black community.  I just recently came from Disney they have booths that charge
to put cornrows and beads in your hair which traditionally started in the black
community.

So what must we do!  Can we hang on and hope the trends will soon change again?

Wow Sharon I'm glad you brought that up about Shamika. Something
happened recently and I hope you'll bring your considerable insight
to bear on it, first as an American, and second as an African
American.

My friend and I were calling the Asbury-Howell game from the booth.
Both of us grew up in AP and live in Howell so we were excited.

When it came time to call the Asbruy Park cheerleaders, a nice woman
came up to the booth with the list. She said, Do you want me to
read these names over the loud speaker?

I knew she thought we would be uncomfortable with the first names.
We wanted her to feel comfortable so we told her we were both from
AP and probably knew some of the families (we did) so we could
handle the names.

She gave me the list. I have to tell you, there was no first name I
had ever heard of before. This was well beyond Shamika.

One name I knew I couldn't handle, and asked her for help. She
looked at it and admitted that she couldn't say it either. She had
to make a cell phone call for the pronunciation.

My friend ran through the listover the loud speaker and did a
perfect job with the names.

It made me realize that I may have just experienced a bit of culture
clash.

As an Italian, I come from people who changed their names to sound
more American. Many of my cousins used their American

The Race Question At Asbury Park

Asbury Park, NJ July 14 - The colored people here are not as
 indignant as was supposed
over the action of James A. Bradley in arranging a separate bathing
 ground for them. The
members of the Afro-American League, who were active in the
 movement to hold a
meeting tonight, in which Mr. Bradley was to be strongly denounced,
 found but little
sympathy, and the whole thing ended in a fizzle.

This evening the colored people denounced the hot-headed persons
 who talked of
holding the indignation meeting. After conferring together, the
 leaders of the colored
people decided that Mr. Bradley's action was justified by the
 circumstances, and there
will be no trouble here over the race question.

Applying modern values and standards to interpret events of another
 time and context
 leads to distorted conclusions.

Re: [AsburyPark] Re: OMG - WTF - Again !

2008-10-28 Thread denise
My problem is I graduated from Neptune High School.  My mom and dad still
reside in Neptune, my two oldest daughters graduated from Neptune and my twins
graduated from Asbury Park High School and my youngest is a cheerleader for AP
Pop Warner.

Many of the parents in AP say they bleed blue I have to say I bleed red and
blue.  Love both towns still.

My parents and relatives taught me about my history.  I don't put it all on the
school to teach and we can't truly put all the blame on the teachers for what
is wrong with the children of today.  Little Johnny can't read because little
Johnny has not been adopted by a village to teach him.

It starts at home when I went to school there were two classes offered to me
and I took both.  There was American History taught by my Italian teacher Mr.
Cafone, then there was Black History taught by my African American teacher Mr.
Jake Jones.  If there were things I did not understand or was confused about I
went home and asked my parents.  If I still had quesions I knew where the
library was to do further research.  Whatever the outcome I had various sources
to draw my conclusion from.

I worked on my youngest child from the womb.  I had to put pillows in a chair
so she could reach the keyboard at the age of 1 now she's teaching me a few
things about electronics.

Hi Denise!

Thanks so much for these thoughts below. VERY insightful.

Don't congratulate me on the win - unless my kid is on the Howell
team, my heart is always with AP ;-).

My friend and I in the booth were in that rare position of cheering
for both teams touchdowns and tackles.

We've heard all about AP's program in Howell this year. Outstanding!

Let me add a bit to your thoughts below.

The names are not new and not considered traditional.  I named my
daughters what I thought was at the time unique names.  I did not
want the traditional names like Denise, Sara, Amy, Joanne, Katie.
(Taniya,Tivona, Tamara,Tierra, Tayana) I wanted to be creative.  If
you look at their names you see they all begin with T and end with
a and they all have 6 letters.  Their middle names are traditional
(Michelle, Danielle)

I know what you mean. We thought we were being creative in
combining two names for my daughter (Annalisa). She's only met two
others.

In my opinion I think the next generation after me started naming
children after what they thought were muslims names with some
adjustments .  Some also took traditional names and added letters
to make it different for instance Shawn became(Eshawn, DeShawn,
DaShawn, MyShawn). Then some went in my opinion overboard with
names that probably made it hard for the child to pronounce like
Ashanasia, Ashaquasia then some names became probably like the
names you discovered on that list --only for the child to be given
a nickname that was easy to pronounce.

Great history lesson, Denise. Really shows the evolution.

Also the late 80-90's generation considered the traditional names
as slave names.

I thought that. It's a real cultural problem. I blame the schools
for teaching the wrong things. I did a column on it not to long
ago. It's here:

http://tinyurl. com/6yhg8q

I don't think the idea was to be as you say deliberately separate
because I would say to you what makes the names like Tommy and
Denise, Concetta right and the names like Ashanasia, DaShawn,
Chiquetta wrong.

I know what you mean. I didn't put my sister's name in the common
name column though. That's why it was hidden from her until she was
14. The family thought it was to ethnic at the time and didn't want
her having any problems fitting in.

Generations have their own trends. What we thought was right in our
younger years is not what is considered right to today. Most young
people have they're own mindset these days that's why you now see
spiked hair-, you see the gothic look, you see the pants hanging
off.  Do I agree with the new trends no.  But you also have seen the
comeback of pedal pushers(capri pants) mini dresses , penny loafers.

GREAT POINT!

But at the same time a certain name has hurt some people.  Someone
could have a master's degree and have graduated at the top of her
class but because her name on the application for employment was
Shamika she was never even considered for the job.

Exactly right! That's my fear too. Aren't we putting the children
at a competitive disadvantage with the non-traditional names?
That's why I call it culture clash. The European mindset was always
to Americanize. The Black mindset, which has every right to
America, seems to be trending toward separateness.

I grew up in Belmar then Neptune now Asbury Park.  What is going
on in any

I feel there are more children in AP who want to learn than there are children
who don't want to learn and if the powers that be could find a way to legally
separate the two-I know the school system will turn around--but first everyone
has to get on the same accord---the main goal is educating our future.

Discipline needs to be instilled for allchildren-parents-teachers.  The
fight should not be against one another, the fight should be for the children-
their future and our future depends on it.  We need to change  our public
schools from being a daycare center and make it what it was built to be a
school of learning.

Private email asks:
the question is  what does one do with the kid that tells you to go f yourself?
YOu send him
out of the room and they're back the next day or 10 minutes later.
IMO
So many variables -
Does the teacher really command respect, know the subject matter and pedagogy
well,  and is he or she a fair and competent teacher?
If so, does the administration and board have zero tolerance for behavior which
interferes with the education of the other students; if so, great reason to
have strong suspension and expulsion criteria.
if not, is there mentoring support for the teacher by master teachers?
Are parents being held accountable for the behavior of their children?  Are
they invited to sit in classrooms?
Is good student behavior being noted and commended?
Do less than effective teachers still get satisfactory observation reports
because the district can't attract any better emplyees,  or conditional
evaluations contingent on specific areas of needed improvement within a
specified time?
If not, do supervisors fulfill their job descriptions to document the poor
teacher performance, required for dismissal?
Are counselors always available to student and not overloaded with too many
students and CYA paperwork?

Just a few examples.  Hard work, but it can't be achieved with lots of catered
luncheons from Frank's, Serpico's, TJ's, et al.

Watch the number of students coming and going to school, particularly high
school, with books, indicating homework.  Usually a good indication of how
serious the district is about academics.

As I teacher, I've always been advised by my administrators that the district
was responsible for basic supplies for all students.

Most students came with their own, but by law we had to provide for those who
could not. In individual budgets allocated to each teacher, paper, pencils,
pens, etc. were the first items we had to allocate for.  If we had left over
inventory from the previous year, then we could spend more on items like
newspaper subscriptions, AV materials etc for our own students.

As a side issue, private companies like Pepsi, Nike, et al. would also deliver,
gratis, huge amounts of school supplies with their logos; however, I went out
of my way to make sure no brand names made it into my classroom.

[AsburyPark] Annual back to School Block Party

2008-07-14 Thread denise
Good afternnoon all

I am reaching out to all.  We need help.  We need help securing funds/supplies
for the annual back to school party for the children of Asbury Park.  This will
be our third year The first and second year having been a great success.

The past two years we had dancers, singers and mentors.  We had rides, games and
served hot dogs, hamburgers and drinks for the enjoyment of all in attendance.
The highlight of both events was the book bags that contained
pen, pencils, notebooks and supplies for going back to school.  Both years we had
over 1200 in attendance without incidence and to top it off one year we had the
Governor visit complimenting how great it was.

I am a member of the Ridge and Bangs Revitalization Committee and I am reaching
out to everyone in this group who may be able help make this event happen again
this year.

There is nothing better than making the children feel good about returning to
school.

Odd isn't it? The SAME building that housed Criterion Candies, then
became the temporary home of our Seniors, then booted them OUT to do
what they're doing! Wasn't it busted heating or some flim-flam
excuse? Just go up Hwy 33 West and SEE the Senior Citizens building,
built with a GRANT and money given by the state and County! What is
up with Asbury Park?

You guys USED to be on the cutting edge of everything and you let
Neptune build new schools, new programs and a Senior Center, to DIE
for! I was Monmouth County President and was invited, when it opened!
I thought to myself, that Asbury Park had something to at least MATCH
theirs but no!

Now, that I'm a Senior myself, I'm tempted to crash over in Neptune's
because I hear AP Seniors has a corner in a basement in the city.
Correct me, if I'm wrong. And I SAW the big AC units myself, this
morning, when I met up with Glenn/Dapawprint!

have done so already.  The ideal spot for the container would have been in the
corner (where MM is).  No ones moving anything at this point!
But of course, weather MM herself will remain there forever is
questionable.  I know her family has been running the place for the last few
years now, will they continue?

[AsburyPark] Re: Asbury Park Chamber Names Carousel Awards

2008-02-21 Thread Denise

I have the feeling MM is not planning to cater to a boardwalk filled
with children. When they first showed their plans in City Council there
was nothing for children except a candy store with walls of candy. They
did not mention the water park that was proposed in the app. MM in my
opinion is gearing the boardwalk to the people they will need to fill
the Condos that will be built on Ocean Ave. The Condos being built are
for couples with no children.

I can remember the days when I was young and living in South Belmar how
we came to Asbury Park on special occasions ie Easter, Children's Day
for the amusement rides. Is there still such a thing as children's day.
MM is not interested in history. If Ap could survive on history there
would be no need to do anything to the buildings on the BW except some
paint. The Boardwalk that we knew is HISTORY. In someways I agree that
we need to move on to bigger and better things, but MM cannot forget the
families in AP because some of us are here for life.

I'd like to see a carousel in the Corousel House again, but i don't
think its possable at this point. Look at the direction the boardwalk is
going in I don't think it would fit in with the stuff planned for
the boardwalk. Times can change though, who knows! I doubt it though...
I was sitting behind members of MM at a previous counsil meeting. A
frequent towns person wondered over and began asking questions about
amusments and other boardwalk attractions (like the water park he had
heard of as being part of MM's plan). Their answer to his questions was
no..

Re: [AsburyPark] Re: Former Monmouth County Emergency Management Coordinator Harr...

2008-02-12 Thread denise

I have also always inquired why AP was never included
in the bio terrorism drills and emergency management
drills held by the county---being employed by the CHD
I was basically brushed off. Went privately to a
couple of AP officials brushed off again. I stated
the same thing Asbury Park is basically another
Katrina waiting to happen. I also question why the
super X is still open---I can't push the issue without
having to defend myself as a whistle blower. Anyone
willing to take on the county. The SuperX food store
is the most disgusting store I have ever been in. The
place wreaks of bad meat smell.

The people in AP should not have to go to that
disgusting store because they have no other decent
food store in walking distance. I also don't under
understand how they can sell Prussian delicacies (a
baby pig with the head hand and feet still attached)

It's seems like they are only ticketing when work is
so.

They should be doing it on a regular basis and have
received the go ahead to start enforcing parking
tickets all over the city. So you may get one on one
day and may not get one on another day. But be aware
that if you are parked illegally your chances of
getting a ticket are greater now

Re: [AsburyPark] Re: A Look...Community Center's in Asbury Park

2008-01-18 Thread denise
Did you say model it after the group below?

Civilian Conservation Corps
by Randy Golden
exclusively for About North Georgia

As the country suffered the economic woes of The Great
Depression, Franklin Delano Roosevelt extolled the
virtues of hard work. It was in his acceptance of the
Democratic nomination for president in July, 1932 that
FDR began his conservation movement, proposing putting
city men to work restoring the country to its former
beauty. According to Harry Rossoll, the Civilian
Conservation Corps, or CCC, was a massive salvage
operation destined to become the most popular
experiment of the New Deal.

It was on the day of his inauguration that President
Roosevelt began creating an alphabet soup of agencies
to help battle the economic and social problems that
beset our country. In early March, 1933 he summoned
Congress to our nation's capitol and in an emergency
session on March 9th Congress heard his plan to enlist
250,000 men in an effort to preserve the natural
resources of these United States. Surprisingly,
organized labor mounted a campaign against FDR's
proposal, however, the bill was signed into law on
March 31, 1933.

After passage of the act in 1933, Georgia quickly
found a way to eliminate blacks from participation in
the program. In spite of the unemployment rate for
blacks being twice the rate for whites, all blacks
were listed as employed, making them ineligible to
participate in the CCC. However, by May, 1933,
Roosevelt called Democratic Governor Talmadge on the
carpet, threatening him by withholding every penny of
CCC money that would pour into the state. Talmadge
quickly reconsidered and agreed to permit Blacks entry
into the program, so long as they served in separate
camps.

For two years Georgia and other states admitted more
than 200,000 Black males into a program that over its
lifespan of 8 years saw a total of 2.5 million men
move through the camps. While early camps in northern
states were occasionally integrated, by 1934 there was
segregation throughout the organization. The presence
of a Negro CCC camp near a town or village anywhere in
the United States caused such problems that by 1934
the director of the program complained bitterly about
the general attitude towards Blacks. Enrollment of
these Americans into the Civilian Conservation Corps
was curtailed in 1935, with the silent approval of
Roosevelt.

Re: [AsburyPark] Re: Annual Clean Up Asbury Park Day

2008-01-18 Thread denise
Beginning this year we should have a total of 108
policeman employed for AP---We also have a large
presence of County and State officers patroling the
streets of Asbury Park.

Believe it or not---there has been a reduction in
crime in AP. Alot of crime that had not been reported
in the AP Press was occuring in AP---even though the
press tried to make sure they had every bad occurence
that happened in Asbury Park on the front page.

Our Police are on foot patrol---in warmer temperatures
on bike patrol---we also have two officers on horse
back.

So we have the police working for us we just need the
community to come together and work with the police in
being the second pair of eyes.

I'm not sure if it's in place as of yet but I know
they are working on a new phone system for the police
department so when you report a crime your name is not
blasted all over the scanner.

Any problems feel free to reach out to the Chief-Mark
Kinmon---he is a great guy---very down to earth

I have to disagree with your list---most of the
locations you name require you to be a member
---except for the West Side Community Center which
needs renovation.

I am active with Pop Warner and if it rained or was
too cold to hold practice outside the only place we
would have access to is the Westside Community Center.
Where we had to squeeze 4 cheer leading squads in for
practice. Can you imagine 4 different squads doing
different cheers and the echo effects from the gym

Hinge maybe you don't see it but drug sales and gangs are not just on
the westside---I have reported drug sales that I have seen on the
east side---just like you see the prostitution on the east side the
prostitution is also on the west side---the drug dealers and gang
members do not discriminate they are throughout the City of Asbury
and need to be removed. The East side is at present being beautified
with new business and new people but if we don't remove the rift raft
as a whole we can forget about the whole town. Because the drug
dealers and gang members (who are the drug dealers) will go where
they can make their money.

Gang members are drug dealers fighting for territorial rights

[AsburyPark] Re: 2009 AP CIty Council Candidate Announcement!

2008-01-16 Thread Denise
We are both in agreement with the main concept it needs to be cleaned
up. It will have to be a community project---but it can't be a
divided community.

We are also both in agreement that there really isn't all that much
opportunity for the youth of AP, either for jobs (summer or year
round) or any form of recreation. We don't have BB courts, tennis
courts, public baseball fields, a community center...none of that.

No they should not have to play in the ditch on main street.

But we have to work together and stand together for all of Asbury.
Do we have to have a leader---yes that's the reason for voting
AsburySteve will get my vote when hell freezes over

Are you kidding me? I've called the PD about drug sales right out
front of my house, and if you recall, I'm also the person who called
the PD after I found a hypodermic needle in Library Square Park one
Sunday morning. I agree that these activities don't just occur on
the
west side, but if you look at the overall history of crime in the
city, a majority of it has always occured in the west side area.
What
I'm mostly talking about is a community policing itself, rejecting
the
gang/drug lifestyle, rejecting the welfare mentality and making a
positive example instead of an enduring negative one.
Part of this involves the hope that MM brings to the city.
I've said this many times before...there really isn't all that much

Maybe it's just me, but when I see kids having to play touch
football
in a ditch on Main Street in front of the train station, something
is
wrong. Not with the fact that kids are playing, but they have to
improvise a playing field out of a ditch.

Once I decide to get a broker's license (if), I have
an office with my name on it. In AP.

I sincerely believe that will happen.

You gonna complain if I bring in someone that wants to
invest $5m in an entertainment
complex? Or spend $20m to develop a hotel? Or a market
research firm calls looking for
real data for one of their clients analyzing a
potential deal in AP? Either I answer the ? or
direct to the the City Manager/Redevelopment etc.

No not going to complainappreciate everything you
do for the City of Asbury Park. Not knocking anything
that you have done in the past for Asbury Park. If
there were more people who reside in the City that
felt the way you feel about the City Asbury Park would
once again be on the map and in the record books as
the place to be.

Back to what an outsider does:

1. Brings 10 people in for dinner after the movies at
Monmouth mall - choices are:
a) Red Bank
b) Long Branch_
c) Asbury
d) the houlihans, fridays etc.

So I decide to hae everyone follow me to AP - 10
people 4 not from the immdediate area.
Wind up in AP and have a great time. Three days later,
those 2 new people and 2 of their
OTher friends wind back in AP for dinner. Now, are
those establishments complaining that
6 NEW people were introduced to AP? Doubt it. I;'m
sure Dan, Tommy and many others
have had to drag people here. Guess what - it works.
Good food, people and fun.

Keep up the good work---keep bringing you wife to
visit may one day she come and stay when the kids are
grown.

Loving those who love Asbury

This past summer and friend and I went to Cookman for drinks. Were
biking home very late and about 3 sheets to the wind.

We passed a house with a garage behind it. The garage door was open
and on the lawn were about 20 or 30 bikes. A woman on the lawn was
talking with a man in a white panel truck who was loading the bikes.

It took me till the next morning to realize what I'd seen. I always
wondered why you never saw your stolen bike locked up somewhere else
in your town. They were taking them far, far away for resale, I guess.

I didn't know Asbury very well so I couldn't reconstruct what street I
was on.

Sure wish I could.

Officials want Little League field moved

By NANCY SHIELDS
COASTAL MONMOUTH BUREAU

In less than two years, the Asbury Park Little League raised $225,000
to rebuild the worn-out, flooded playing field the league shares with
the girls softball team at the city high school.

The league spent $100,000 to upgrade the field last spring, and now,
President Danny McKee and his board of directors are in the second
phase to put in dugouts, night lights and a small field house with an
announcer's booth.

But once the league began making the larger improvements, the school
district began raising objections.

Two weeks ago, school officials stopped the new lights, being paid for
by Interfaith Neighbors, from being delivered. Officials said a soil
test was needed.

On Tuesday, district officials stopped McKee from having engineers
conduct the soil tests they had required. The company was not on the
state's Department of Labor registry or pre-qualified by the state
Department of Treasury.

In recent weeks, McKee said, he has been given a growing list of
requirements that no one mentioned before. He said he sent Board of
Education attorney Alan Schnirman the complete scope of the project in
October 2006. Schnirman declined to comment Wednesday.

Also on Tuesday, the crisis reached a new dimension when school
officials suggested to McKee that the Little League field be moved to
the school's intermediate school grounds off Bangs and Prospect avenues.

Following a closed session of the school board Wednesday night, McKee
was told that is what district officials plan to do.

The idea to move the field is that of the board's new state fiscal
monitor, Mark Cowell. John Moore, a former school board member, told
the board that it must take a stand and say, We're going to have a
Little League field at the high school.

Let the state monitor overrule you, said Moore, the city's deputy
public works director.

The league has already spent $100,000 donated for its field at the
high school, said the group's treasurer, Brendan Pack.

And now, to say to move it to the middle school, I can only believe
someone doesn't want this done.

If we're not doing it the right way, fine, give us the right way in
one fell swoop, Pack said. Tell us everything that has to be done.

McKee said, If this doesn't get done, I want to be paid for my time
and want the school to reimburse everyone that gave money. It's
basically fraud. . . . They basically lied to me and I passed that on
to all of Monmouth County and throughout the country.

Acting Schools Superintendent James Parham said Wednesday there are
still several outstanding issues, but said moving the field was being
looked at.

What we're looking to do if it's feasible is to relocate that field
over to the Asbury Park Intermediate School, Parham said. We would
feel it would be more valuable to the community . . . and to the
intermediate school.

For years, the Little League field was on a different part of the high
school athletic field and was included to be improved in a 1997
referendum question approved by voters.

But that earlier board ran out of money and the Little League was
moved, sharing the deteriorated girls softball field.

McKee and his board worked the past several years to rebuild the
league, and launched their campaign to upgrade the field in 2006.

Danny has spent part of the last two years of his life working on
this, said school board member Frank D'Alessandro. In any other
town, any sane town, they would be working to help him, to have a
partnership with the Little League, not only for our children but as a
feeder system for the baseball team at the high school.

Why are we making this man jump through 17 hoops to get anything
done, he added. I think they didn't expect him to get this far. . .
. Now they're saying why not just move everything over to the
intermediate school. . . . That will cost taxpayers $100,000, to put
in all kinds of sprinkler systems, do the soil tests, if they want all
that done.

One of the issues that still bothers McKee is that he was supposed to
meet with the school board's building and grounds committee in July,
but that meeting was canceled. In August, he was told he had 15
minutes. He said he gave his presentation and left thinking everything
was good to go.

Garrett Giberson, chairman of that committee, said Wednesday afternoon
that he could not comment.

Parham said another issue is to make certain that

Any comments, corrections, qualifications are greatly appreciated.
Now, I'm going to go to work on approaching the owner.

Don Sammett
Director of Planning and Redevelopment
Asbury Park City Hall

Dear Don Sammett,

We are writing regarding the vent for the meat smoker at D L
Barbeque, 1206 Main St. Odors from the smoker vent blow into
residential windows. We believe the vent should be above the roofline
of neighboring houses and apartments.

1206 Main Street is three stories tall in the front but only one story
tall in the back. The vent is in the back of the building, level with
the windows of second story apartments and the second story windows of
nearby houses, 709 and 709 ½ Fourth Avenue.

During the summer we couldn't open the windows while the meat was
smoking or our curtains, sheets and pillows would smell like barbeque
smoke. Even on beautiful nights we had to close the windows and run
the air conditioner, increasing our utility bill. It cost us money so
they can make money. We don't know yet how the sound and smell will
affect our property values.

When we bought our house at 709 Fourth Avenue, this building housed
The Mercy Center. Prior to that it was a bakery.

Robert Palubinskas sent the fire inspector and fire official regarding
uniform fire code, chapter 3, and they found no problem. Prior to
that Bill Grey inspected the vent and found it working properly.
Because it had been a bakery he felt the vents were grandfathered in.

But a meat smoker was not grandfathered in any more than a coffee
roaster would be.
We understand that Americas Cup had to submit plans for approval
before installing its coffee roaster, which vents above the roofline
of the adjacent apartments.

Asbury Park needs both viable business and stable property values in
order to thrive. We are certain that both can work together and in
this case I'm hoping something as simple as venting above the roofline
will enable that.

We look forward to your reply.

Sincerely,
Linda Griggs and Allen Hansen

I agree---Danny asked who will pay for the lights that can now not be
installed---he received no answer. The question would also be is why didn't
the lawyer check into this in the beginning. If the lawyer did not know the
jist of things I am sure a few phone calls could have solved this problem a
long time ago.

Take a cue from Frank. The lawyers serve at the pleasure of the BOE.
It is one thing to perhaps proceed cautiously and listen to counsel.
And I understand that there may be a perception of liability if the
soil cannot support the lights, etc. But now we are talking about
telling the LL to move. The BOE can override the state monitor. I have
heard it from too many people, on both sides of the fence that it is
obvious that SOMEONE does not want the LL. Who is it? It is time for
the BOE to stand up.

If there is a real issue with the lights, or something else, exactly
what is it and how do you solve it?

But from what I hear, it is one obstacle after another that is laid
before Danny. That smells. As one obstacle is overcome another is put
in his place. If they are going to do this (which we should not allow
them to) the BOE should give us all our money back.

Dear friends,
Usually it isn't good business smarts to put a newspaper column on the
Internet, but I'm making an exception this week, just this one time, just on
this Asbury Park website.
A little dust up at the triCityNews. I want our High School Football team on
the cover, so people will go to their Championship game. The folks that run
triCity disagree. I'm sure my column about High School Football will get
bumped from the front page for the opening of the one millionth antique store
or the one billionth artist that can't paint worth a damn.
So in the spirit of the rebellion and using the power of the Internet, I'm
printing my column below, to alert everyone to Friday night's championship game.
What's triCityNews gonna do, fire me?
Enjoy:
ASBURY FOOTBALL VIES FOR STATE TITLE FRIDAY NIGHT
Adults And Politics Can't Stop Them This Year

An atheist is a guy who watches a Notre Dame-SMU football game and doesn't care
who wins. President Eisenhower

Football is import. A town is judged on the quality of its football team. A
school is judged on the success its program. Spirits soar when the school team
is winning. Even kids who don't play get the idea that their school is in good
hands when the adults have their act together enough to make sure all is in
place to help the team beat other schools. The scoreboard builds confidence.

Friday night, November 30 at 5:00, the Asbury Park High School Football Team
plays for their section's State Championship. Asbury Park hasn't played for a
Championship in 20 years, and hasn't won one in 23. The game will be held at
Rutgers in New Brunswick.

Please make the time to go to this game. The Asbury Park High School players
will get an adrenaline boost when they hear a roaring crowd. They play against
Keansburg. Keansburg is a football town, with a good program from Pop Warner
on up. Make no mistake, Keansburg will fill seats at Rutgers. They won't let
their players down, and neither should we. The only way to show Asbury players
support is to be there. They won't know you wish them well from your homes.

Let's let Asbury players beat Keanburg's numbers on the scoreboard, while we
beat Keansburg's numbers in the stands.

Let me tell you of three recent stories about Asbury Football that might
explain why we haven't been State Champs for two and a half decades.

About 7 or 8 years ago Asbury had a great team. We were 8-0 and heading for a
State Championship. Then there was a complaint made to the NJSIAA, the
governing body. One of our players was in a program that required him to go to
tutoring. He didn't go to tutoring, because the school never offered it.

So what punishment did the NJSIAA impose upon Asbury for having a student that
didn't go to tutoring? They turned our 8-0 record into an 0-8 record. Bye-Bye
playoffs.

They didn't care about all the work every kid on the team did on that field to
go undefeated. They punished everyone for an off the field infraction. They
stole the season. In professional football, if you have too many men on the
field it's a five-yard penalty. Throwing to an ineligible receiver is loss of
a down.

For the NJSIAA to wipe out a whole season and crush the hopes of all those kids
and the City for an off field tutoring infraction was a giant middle finger
to the City of Asbury Park. This Friday, lets give it back to them.

By the way, the young man who missed the tutoring, who this whole system is
supposedly set up to serve – he quit school. He never returned to High School
after the ruling because he felt responsible, even though the school never
offered the tutoring. What a heartbreak. I get sick thinking about it.

Then a few years ago, we had a star quarterback, who the NJSIAA said could not
play his whole senior year. When he was in 8th grade, knowing he was going to
be a star, the High School coach let him suit up and take some snaps with the
High School team, just to give him a thrill. The NJSIAA ruled that 8th grade
was his first year of eligibility for taking the snaps, and you only get four -
so no senior year play for him.

There was a challenge to the ruling, and a settlement was made where the
quarterback was suspended for two games. In a 10 game seasons, two games can
keep you out of the playoffs.

Then there was last year. The Asbury Park Board of Education (Bored of
Education?) is notorious for concentrating on gossip, tearing people down and
personnel issues. The students never seem to come up in their dealings. Last
