Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] A nice review of the Roon software
I definitely don't miss physical media and much prefer my listening room without a cd lined wall. I find the biggest problem is just how large my collection has become over the years, so much so that I've forgotten what lies at the core of my musical tastes. It is a great music streaming solution, and still the only thing I'd recommend to anyone if they weren't going to use Roon. Fundamentally what Roon provides me with from a user experience perspective is deeper and richer ways to explore my music collection, something that just isn't possible with LMS. Some examples: I like to read artist biographies and album reviews. Other artists, albums, composers etc. named therein can be clicked through from within the biographies or reviews. Let's say I like Simon Phillips' work as a drummer and would like to find every album in my library where he makes an appearance...simply go to an album he appears in or search for him as an artist and click through...you'll be presented a complete list of albums in your library he's appeared on, many of which may be complete surprises to you unless you're a walking encyclopedia of music. If it's something I'm going to want to come back to often I can bookmark that and any other filtered result I care to see without having to redefine/ re-specify the criteria. If I want to see all albums released by a specific record label within a selected genre(s) that's pretty simple too. I can browse all Soundtracks, EPs, Singles or any combination of genres, years, decades, audio formats etc. at the touch of a button. When I'm browsing an artist I can see their main albums, Singles and EPs and appearances logically arranged. I also have at my fingertips a list of artists that are Similar To, Followed By, Influenced By and Associated With that artist. Whilst this kind of exploration may not appeal to everyone, I find it incredibly useful, it's something I've always wanted to be an integral part of my listening experience and unfortunately it's something LMS simply cannot provide. It analyses the audio stream in every file to be able to recognise it even if renamed at a later point, calculate replaygain etc. for itself. That analysis will take some time in a library that large. The good news is you can still use it whilst all that's happening...it's just not as responsive as it is once the analysis is complete. My guess would be that if the analysis is done on a local machine housing the music it'd be a lot quicker than over a network (which is the case in my present setup). I haven't used it in some time though as I'm principally a Linux user. Roon basically embodies just about everything I could want from a music server, it's metadata rich, it can use its own metadata or yours or both, leverages the metadata to enable exploration of your music, it's fast, enables filtering of browsing/playback by multiple criteria, has artist biographies, album reviews, lyrics etc. and streams bit-perfect audio. I saw your comment re wishing Roon had a plugin for LMS. Truth is it doesn't need it, just download and install it and point it to your library as a Watched Folder (don't use Organised folder unless you want it to move your files). Terminate LMS and enable Squeezebox support in Roon and your SBx players will appear within Roon. 14 day free trial, nothing to lose. Searches are a lot quicker than via iPeng and faster than LMS. I used to keep LMS' database on a ramdisk and performance was great. I don't think there's anything out there that delivers as rich and immersive an experience iro leveraging metadata to enhance your listening experience. As a simple example LMS is great at surfacing links between artists and tracks if you've captured that data. With Roon you don't have to have captured that data... more often than not Roon knows who's appeared on a track so you end up finding instances where a favourite artist has appeared elsewhere in your library that you had no idea of. A pet hate I have iro LMS and all the wifi apps is that when you browse an artist you're presented with a long mixed bag laundry list of everything they've appeared in that's surfaced by your tags - their albums, appearances, compilations, bootlegs all mixed together in one glorious mess...good luck finding an album you're after if you have a lot of compilations. Roon sorts that lot and presents them on the same screen differentiating between main albums, singles and EPs, appearances on other artist's albums and then compilations. I gave up asking for this in LMS. It also lists Similar To, Followed by, Influenced by and Associated with that appears in your library (which can incorporate Tidal albums seamlessly). There's work to do on Classical music and metadata editing/ customization within Roon's database and it's underway...I've no doubt the end result will be fantastic...the Roon team are music lovers and they get it. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Is my Transporter's time up?
On Friday I listened to a custom DAC that employs the Sabre chip in a friend's setup - we both own TP's and I've listened to his setup on numerous occasions. The TP was used as transport and I was blown away by the soundstage and the detail resolved by this DAC. I'd already switched to a PS Audio Digital Link III, but will definitely be moving to this custom DAC when the design is finalised. The TP is no slouch, but you can do better these days where DACs are concerned. It makes for a great transport if you're not planning on playing back 24/96. audiomuze's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=33613 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96011 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Open Letter to Music Pirates from NPR
I agree that the very limited availability of lossless content is an issue that the industry seems unwilling to address - to their own detriment. Additionally, as a music loving consumer today I'm faced with: - very few (if any) record stores with decent depth and breadth of catalogue beyond the current so called top 20 - limited availability in my neighbourhood/ country of CDs by artists I enjoy (sure, I can order them through the local stores, pay a hefty premium and wait 4-7 weeks for them to arrive) - very limited ability to purchase music in lossless format - (often) poorly mastered CDs with little to no dynamic range - (many) popular music artists putting out completely forgettable albums containing a single or two that you'd spin for a few days/ weeks and then spit out like old chewing gum. How many really classic albums have been released since Nirvana's heyday? The end result is artists putting out disposable crap are ignored and I buy a lot less than I otherwise would (you can gear their current crap on the radio anytime you care to turn it on for at least a month following release --- it's meaningless drivel anyhow), and when I do, if it's not a lossless download from places like Bandcamp it's usually an album from a musician whose music I know well, ordered from Amazon. I'd not be at all surprised if it was found that the overwhelming majority of music piracy is carried out by teens and people in their 20's and the pirated content is the mindless drivel/ disposable crap I refer to above - it is after all stuff that has little to no artistic or intrinsic value and it's probably treated accordingly. audiomuze's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=33613 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=95541 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

Disappointing to read about Logitech's refusal to assist, and I do hope you're able to force them into resolving the issue Rob, because the TP's a nice piece of kit and a very pricy (overpriced by today's standards) one at that. But really guys, you carry on as if the TP is the last word in audio fidelity. Personally I don't think Logitech should ever contemplate a TP v2 - it's not their game, sphere of competence or the market they serve - all of that was in the Slimdevices domain. What Logitech do have that's important to me is the Squeezebox ecosystem, without which my enjoyment of my music would be severely diminished. I've purchased a few SB Touch devices and use them as players wherever I want to listen to music. In my listening room I've forgone the TP, replacing it with a Touch as transport, feeding an external DAC (which I've come to prefer over the TP). The point is, as good as the TP is/ was, there are better (and cheaper) DACs on the market today. audiomuze's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=33613 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=95537 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

In my setup I find I only hear the speakers if they're toed-in too far i.e. the tweeters are both pointing directly to where your head would be in your listening position. In my setup it makes the soundstage quite narrow with a lot of stuff coming from the speakers rather than being placed in the soundstage. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] One for the gullible ?
hey, don't knock it till you've tried it :P The best I've heard yet was some fool (apparently an audio engineer by profession before dedicating himself to making hi-fi and speaker stands) trying to tell me that placing my NAS on top one of his sound structures would noticeably enhance the sonic performance of my system. This despite my protestations that the devices are networked and the fact that the NAS and Transporter use my home electrical circuit as a network and are located about 40m apart in entirely different sections of my home. Needless to say the conversation ended quickly and I never purchased a sound structure, not the rear wall speaker mounts for my home theater that caused me to call him in the first place. -- audiomuze '*puddletag: A tag editor for Linux (that happens to run on OS X)*' (http://puddletag.sourceforge.net/) audiomuze's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=33613 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=80786 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles
[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] 24/192 playback
A number of my DVD-Audio discs rip to 24/192 e.g. R.E.M's Out of Time. On more than one occasion I've thought some favourite tracks didn't sound as good as I remember them sounding on CD so I've gone back and played the CD rip to find that some do sound better than the DVD-A to me. This got me looking into playback and I've noticed the 24/192s are transcoded to 705kbps FLAC, which is about half the rate of regular CD rips, and presumably explains my experience? Why would SBS have sox transcode 24/192 to lower quality than the average CD rip, and can one modify this behaviour? -- audiomuze Oh, and yes, I almost forgot... there are those $250.00 acoustic pillows you can stick to your walls, or even better than that magic tuning dots that you can also stick - and that by the shear act of using them will free you of the bondage of this dilemma.
