well, even though I don't have a real say in all of this, I agree with you, a phone is a phone while tablets are obviously down to the basics computers those basics are in a hand held package, yes but a iPhone still is unable to compile and run a full fledged program, while if its basic enough to not be to large for the on hand memory and the inbuilt storage slot capability to hold pads and tablets can I used the second edition of the Tandy radio shack pocket computer, its capabilities were less than a tablet or pad of today but it had a processor, a math co processor, and memory and ran actual programs even if it had a single line of simple text readout. glad to see the adaption, inthane -Original Message- from: Blind-Computing [mailto:blind-computing-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of David Ferrin Sent: Sunday, May 19, 2013 9:16 AM To: blind-computing@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] Modification to the guidelines We have to draw a line somewhere or another. Re: [Blind-Computing] navigating installed programs
it's not listed as IE10, just internet explorer or internet explorer 64 bit essentially it is the replacement for the original internet explorer so it uses links with the same name as 9 did, or at least that is the way it worked on my win 7 home premium machine unaltered location in the start menu(I made a pin to start menu on the original link, so its in the menu directly under the search box, but the original link is at): hit the windows key to get to the start menu, up arrow once to the all programs sub menu, then right arrow(here is a strange to most thing here, I right arrow until I hear the name of a actual program, sometimes its once, sometimes its three times and sometimes I must right arrow a couple times, then left arrow) until you hear the name of an application, then hit the letter I until you land on one of your internet explorer icons. there are at least two, usually 3, Internet Explorer 64 bit, Internet Explorer and one sometimes showing up that says something about without add ons (an emergency version in case you get a virus that blocks you from getting to assistance websites; like Microsoft security search and/or MacAfee stinger or Norton's web powered scan site!, this one will still go to these locations for you to get assistance with the little bugger) the differences seems to be how many programs that you have installed, I have a lot of stuff on my home monster machine, that's why I bought a monster machine, so its a small amount of work extra to get to things without using the simple search box (which is why they put that search box first in things!) or, the speech in safe mode add on that is available on my grab bag site. and either a set of USB sound card and speakers or standard head phones; or (best actually) a set of USB headphones since there considered a external sound card and have there own drivers that windows will find and install in 98% of cases you will probably want to learn the commands for a lighter weight screen reader like NVDA as well, since it seems easier to use in the safe mode speech operations, but you can set up a cheat sheet and go from it while using the safe mode operations as long as you know the few basic commands to command line/run command start the screen reader, for getting to the desktop, starting the sheet (I'd just put a shortcut to it on the desktop to speed things up), changing to a text editor window, and to move in a text editor reading window that will give you speech in windows 7, 8, and it has been said XP as well, though I have not tried the second or last ones yet myself http://grabbag.alacorncomputer.com HTH, inthane -Original Message- From: Blind-Computing [mailto:blind-computing-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Rick Justice Sent: Friday, May 17, 2013 5:23 AM To: blind-computing@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] getting in to safe mode You forgot to mention that there is no speech in safe mode. I have not seen this reaction. or method of readout, are you using jaws or something else. and have you rebooted since the update? if your machine installed the I.E. 10 update, it must show up in the update window, that's start menu, then type in control panel until you have it enter, go to the programs and features link, and enter on it. next you tab across until you see the view installed updates link and enter on it and it will show up in that list of items if yours is not working this way then I have no clue what may or may not have been turned on or off to cause this change in readings. and to activate it should be the same internet explorer icon that was in your start menu previously. apologies on my not being able to assist you more in this, but you have me stumped this time, inthaneelf -Original Message- From: Blind-Computing [mailto:blind-computing-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Tom Sent: Saturday, May 18, 2013 12:54 PM To: blind-computing@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] navigating installed programs obviously I'm not familiar enough with the add or remove menu to follow your instructions. as I said, on my xp pc, internet explorer is displayed as internet explorer on the menu. on mine, the menu begins with 2, 3 digit numbers, the downloaded program name, (letters and numbers), another name, then date. if yours sounds different than this, then our machines are set different -Original Message- From: inthaneelf Sent: Saturday, May 18, 2013 1:29 PM To: blind-computing@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] navigating installed programs its in the updates sub section look for a (I think its a ) button and enter on it that should put you in the correct window. inthaneelf -Original Message- From: Blind-Computing [mailto:blind-computing-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Tom Sent: Saturday, May 18, 2013 3:25 AM To: blind-computing@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] navigating installed programs I went to the add or remove list, and there is no internet explorer listed, as it was on my xp pc, and only 2 windows listed, windows live essentials and windows live sync, and since I do want to uninstall i.e. 10, can someone out there using windows 7, please go to their add or remove list, and tell me if there is a listing for their version of i.e., and if there is, please let me know what the listing says? -Original Message- From: Mujtaba Merchant Sent: Friday, May 17, 2013 10:03 PM To: blind-computing@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] navigating installed programs Hi Tom, Try this out, in the search box of the start menu of windows 7 type add and remove programs and hit enter. You may have to turn your jaws cursor on with the minus key. Then do a ctrl home to get to the top of the page and start arrowing down passed the page title, menus, until you hear something about information bar, or activex. Press your right mouse key (slash key on your calculator keyboard). This should give you some options to deal with the activex problem. If you don't find the information bar/activex stuff I talked about earlier, press your pc cursor key, then turn your virtual cursor mode off with insert+z and then try the steps in the above paragraph again. Re: [Blind-Computing] View Protected files?
hi cliff, here is the notes I have that will enable your friend to handle this. There are two ways to solve this problem: 1. Unlock the file in the file properties in Windows Explorer before opening the file. 2. Unprotect it once you get into Word. Here are directions for both: Method 1: 1. Select the file in Windows Explorer. 2. Press the context key and choose the Properties option. It will be at the bottom of the list. 3. Press the spacebar on the Unlock button. Note when you do this focus is left on the unlock button. You will have to use your JAWS cursor or virtual cursor to click on the OK button. 4. Now the file won't be protected when you bring it up in the Office application. Method 2: 1. Open the document in Word. 2. Press Alt-f for the Office pull-down, I for Info and E for Make Editable. This will unprotect the document. I don't know if the exact steps are the same for other Office applications or not. If not, with a little exploration you can find out how to do this. have a good day, inthaneelf -Original Message- From: Blind-Computing [mailto:blind-computing-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Cliff Smales Sent: Tuesday, May 07, 2013 6:26 PM To: blind-computing@jaws-users.com Subject: [Blind-Computing] View Protected files? Re: [Blind-Computing] Groove Folder Synchronization
hi, shortcuts, although they do use a small amount of resources, the amount is so small that unless your running a single core computer with under a GByte of ram your not going to notice it, that's if all your using is shortcuts and/or folders to sort them into. also, having your information on your C drive is not going to slow you down significantly, what it does do is make it far more difficult to replace/reload the OS without wiping out your data as well, and slows that process down. those using a small drive or partition of a drive can fix things far faster since they do not have to worry about destroying there data when they wipe and reload the OS. ssd's as expensive as they currently are, will increase boot speed even more than anything else you have mentioned, in which case using the smaller ssd for the OS and another larger and slower standard hard drive for your data is quite the recommendation now a days. take care, inthaneelf -Original Message- From: Blind-Computing [mailto:blind-computing-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Mujtaba Merchant Sent: Friday, May 03, 2013 7:18 AM To: blind-computing@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] Groove Folder Synchronization Hi Mike, Thanks for the link. I abstain from putting shortcuts on the desktop, simply because it eats up resources. Also an advice to all is that do not store all your data in the C drive. Instead store it in any other drive. Reason for this is your Operating System sits in the C drive. Having too many programs or data files on this drive will slow down Windows start up or shut down, also to a great extent the performance of your PC. In Windows 7 you can just type in the program name in the search box and it's there for you to hit enter on it and launch it. Like for example you would use the windows key to have the start menu opened, the focus will be in the search edit box, just type word and this will throw up results of the programs that have word in them, use the up and down arrow keys and locate the program you wish to launch and hit enter to launch it. Usually it's the first program in the search list, so not much worries. hi, just a quick addendum to this. It can be My Documents folder, C drive, D drive, Desktop or anywhere in Windows. In order to put your files and folder at your favourite place, each time you have to follow either of these two classic methods : Note: I know all of you know these basic things, but their is something else which i want to tell you all. Just keep reading it First Method 1. Select your file or folder which you want to move or copy 2. Right click to display a context menu 3. Click Copy or Cut 4. Go to the location where you want to put your file or folder 5. Right click to display a context menu 6. Click Paste Second Method 1. Select your file or folder which you want to move or copy 2. Press CTRL + C to copy or CTRL + X to cut (move) 3. Go to the location where you want to put your file or folder 4. Press CTRL + V to paste it Following the above steps looks easy but when there is a way to speed up the whole process, than why not use that option. Whenever you right click any file or folder, (you noticed or not) their is an option of Send To in the context menu. The shortcut key for it after pressing the application key is letter, N. By default, there are some limited options available in that menu, but you can add your own folder or location over there and than can easily copy any file or folder to your favorite folder or location instantly. But before moving ahead, let's see what the default options available in the Send To menu are. Default Options In The Send To Menu Right click any file or a folder and select the Send To option from the menu. For example, at one of my PC these are the options available in the Send To menu. Let me tell you briefly about the most common options of the Send To menu : Compressed (zipped) Folder : Clicking this option will quickly creates a compressed file (Zip file) and copies the selected files or folders to it. Desktop (create shortcut) : Clicking this option will create a shortcut of your file or folder on the desktop. My Documents or Documents : Clicking this option will create a Copy of the selected file or folder to the Documents folder. Fax Recipient : Clicking this option will allows you to send the file as a fax via the Windows Fax and Scan tool. (you need to configure windows to work like that) Mail Recipient : Clicking this option will allows you to easily attach a file to an e-mail message. (It will only work if you have installed any email client. For e.g. Ms-Outlook, Outlook Express, Thunderbird etc.) CD/DVD RW drive : Clicking this option will create a Copy of the selected file or folder to the CD/DVD drive, so that you can burn your documents easily on the CD/DVD. USB drive : Clicking this option will create a Copy of the selected file or folder to the USB drive (if it's already plugged into your computer) 3 1/2 Floppy (A:) : Clicking this option will create a Copy of the selected file or folder to the floppy drive (if you have that in your computer) How To Add Any Folder In The Send To Menu After knowing much about the Send To menu, now let's see how you can add your favorite folder in it. By doing that you can easily copy your files / folders by simply right clicking it. Note: You can also add Copy To or Move To option in your right click menu, but I recommend that method only to those people who know what they are doing. Go to the location of your favorite folder, Right Click it, click Send To and select Desktop (create shortcut) It will instantly create a shortcut on the desktop of your folder. Now go to your Desktop and Right click the Shortcut folder and select Rename. Just remove the

hi Trish, defragmenting more than once a month is as far as I see and know useless unless your doing a lot of file intensive and altering things on a daily basis. about once a month is more than enough for most regular computer users, just you need to remember to do it then! I use a alternative to the windows defragmentation application that is faster than the windows version called auslogics disk defragmentation: http://auslogics.com/en/software/disk-defrag but if you wish to work with and re assign the time of the windows application, it is in my windows 7 useful hints download off my grab bag site: http://grabbag.alacorncomputer.com along with numerous other useful hints for windows 7 use and repair. or you can follow the tips out of one of it's files, windows 7 tips and tricks below: Setting up scheduled defrags is easy: 1. Click the Start button, type defrag, and click Disk Defragmenter. 2. Click Configure schedule. 3. Choose a time when your computer is turned on, but you are not using it. 4. Click OK and Close to save your settings Your disk will now be defragmented regularly. Angelo -Original Message- From: Mujtaba Merchant Sent: Wednesday, April 03, 2013 10:20 PM To: blind-computing@jaws-users.com Subject: [Blind-Computing] Symantec and JAWS Screen Reader Hello Folks, This is something spectacular I came across at my work place and thought I should share it with you guys. I work on a Windows 7 OS PC with JAWS 14 installed on it. Now, this PC is behind a corporate firewall and has Symantec protection I believe corporate edition. When the IT department installed JAWS on this PC there were initial glitches in installing it and activating it to the full version. Had something to do with Administrative privilages. Anyhow, this has nothing with the concern of this email. I started experiencing iratic behavior from JAWS on applications that were of my daily use. For example we use Microsoft Communicator 2007 as an internal communication tool or IM client as some of you may know it as. JAWS fails to announce the status of my contact in the contacts list, there is absolutely no clue if the contact is away, in a meeting, busy or just offline. Then on some web pages it failed to read elements like buttons and some links. In excel when I switch to the worksheet from another application, by default the home tab is already selected so I need to press the escape key before doing anything on the sheet. Sometimes, JAWS would just get paranoid and start reading arbid text from an application which is no longer in focus. This made me get really frustrated and I wrote to Freedom Scientific. They gave me a work around for my communicator issue, unfortunately it did not work as expected. I did a little research on the net and found out the culprit is the Symantec protection software that is blocking JAWS functionality. Here is what Symantec had to say on their website: You can create file exceptions for Tamper Protection. You might want to create a Tamper Protection exception if Tamper Protection interferes with a known safe application on your client computers. For example, Tamper Protection might block an assistive technology application. Source: http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=contentid=HOWTO80927 id=HOWTO80927 Now my question is why does one have to got to go through this extra effort in adding JAWS or for that matter any other screen reader in the exemption list of applications in Symantec? Should not they have already figured out that this will create hinderances to any blind user in a corporate environment? Why can't Freedom Scientific OR Symantec take some ownership in creating a more accessible environment for a blind user when it comes to security. Lucky for me, I have some technical knowledge to back up my researching ability, imagine a novice blind computer user, he/she would have to go through a lot of trouble to demystify this strange behavior of his installed copy of JAWS. This is of most concern because there is no mention of this issue being reported by Freedom Scientific on their site. I am going to dig their forums to further investigate this claim of mine. I've got some mp3 files I want to store there, and I was able to create a folder a week or so ago, but couldn't find it today. So I tried creating another one, but couldn't seem to do it the same way. I guess I need to have a better understanding of where and how to create new folders. Today, I saw the usual folders--documents, music, video, and something else, but as I stated earlier, I couldn't seem to create a new folder. Ideally, I'd like to have an Audio folder under the Libraries folder. Any clarification much appreciated. Dave From: Steve Easiest way is to just do as you always did for Xp. You can go to the directory where you want to create the folder by browsing from Windows Explorer which you open with control-E. Hit alt-f for file, w for the new submenu, and arrow to folder. The library is there for a centralized spot where you can find all the files of a given type. Each library type, for pictures, documents, music etc. has its own default location. However, the library actually just points to the location of the various files of that type; in other words, you could have several spots where you have pictures - on your documents folder under mypictures, possibly at some location on-line like a facebook album, etc. and you could have the pictures library point to all those pics no matter where they are. If you open the library for my music, you can see or change the default location. But, you don't need to store your mp3's there. You can store them in your default music folder under documents, username, mymusic I think it is called. Steve From: Gene You can make folders in libraries or you can make folders while working directly in drives just as you did in Windows XP. If you create a folder in a library, it will be created in a default location. You are still creating folders on the hard drive but you are doing so from inside of a library. You can change the location where folders are made. A library allows you to see all files of a certain kind regardless of where they are on your computer. Re: [Blind-Computing] excel printing
hi, I at one time was fully sighted, and formatting is still difficult for me even having seen most of the things that can be done! understanding some things about the program helps, while other things are needed, but which of the choices are needed depends on the people your working with and for. a good way to get experience with what can! be done is to take a class at a local college or junior college in, well either excel, or most often they have a computer 101 class, which will have an introduction to the4 basic office tools, word, excel, PowerPoint and access. if you talk with the instructor, before the class starts and take it as a C/NC ( credit/no credit, meaning not for a grade but only for passing it and the points toward a college degree) and tell them what your working on, many will be willing to work with you as much as they can (good to ask the school your paying to show you this for some tutor, and disabled students center help as well!) if you have a friend at work, you can ask them about what they think you should do and I can probably tell you how to set it up the big thing is a two fold project, one find out what they want, and then find out how to create it you can contact me off list for more information, another hint, if you do not change anything, you have a total of about 15 letters per cell and 4 cells across the page before things start getting out of shape, that's 60 symbols in the whole row of 4 cells, of information, if you do not alter them with the formatting menu, anything more and we need to start changing things. regards, inthaneelf inthane...@roadrunner.com -Original Message- From: Blind-Computing [mailto:blind-computing-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Mujtaba Merchant Sent: Saturday, February 23, 2013 9:54 PM To: blind-computing@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] excel printing Hello, This is kind of difficult to answer for any blind computer user. Printing a worksheet also depends on how many columns you have filled in the sheet, there is a difference on how many cells are actually visible and are actually there. The key combination Insert + F1 will give you the summary of the worksheet in focus. Also under the view menu, you can choose how the worksheet can be seen, printlayout etc. While printing you are given a dialog box that allows one to print the current page or selected page like 1 to 3 etc. Users are also given the option to print the selected area, for example if you have selected cells a1:f112 all the matter in those selected cells will be printed. Note: Each worksheet has gridlines visible to the user, it represents cells on the worksheet. But while printing these gridlines are not printed unless you have provided the cells with a thin grid line border. Giving your printout a table like look. The safest suggestion I can offer here is take a sighted friend with you and practice the art of printing again and again. I sincerely apologize for not being of any ground breaking help but this is the best I can do at this point in time. -Original Message- From: Blind-Computing [mailto:blind-computing-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of romance's prince Sent: Saturday, February 23, 2013 4:45 PM To: blind-computing@jaws-users.com Subject: [Blind-Computing] excel printing hello friends am totally blind, use excel in my work, and need to print reports and applications from excel, the problem am facing that sighted people always send me complains that sheet not formatted good and not fine in printing. please, need the steps which help me to format excellent sheet which will be printed on A4 paper. am using jaws, excel 2003. many thanks beero For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/ For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/ For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/

Now, type, ipconfig, press enter. That's I P C O N F I G. 3. Now, route the Jaws cursor to the PC cursor, press page up, arrow down 1 line at a time until you hear, Default gateway the numbers next to, Default Gateway will be your IP address. Default Gateway 192.168.1.1 The numbers including the points is your Router IP address. 4. Press the PC cursor key to go back to the PC cursor type, exit, press enter to exit the command prompt. 5. When you put your IP address into the run dialogue you need to put, http://, in front of the IP address. So, this is what it would look like in the run dialogue: http://192.168.1.1 6. Type, http://192.168.1.1, into the Run Dialogue press enter. Now, tab to the password edit field, type in your password, tab to okay, press enter. You will now be in your router settings. Re: [Blind-Computing] Winamp not playing tracks automatically
sometimes the only fix for Winamp troubles is to completely remove and replace Winamp, there is a .ini file that Winamp makes in the {user name, app data} folder that controls win amps initial setup and interactions. and replacing this with a new one (by deleting it and then filling out the first use info again) and/or replacing it with a saved unused version of the file (by making a copy and installing it over the top of the original in use one) can fix things as well, but you need an uncorrupted copy of the file to do the second one and/or to fill out the info again if you do the first. let me know if you decide to try removing the file and I'll hunt up the path to it for you. inthane -Original Message- From: Blind-Computing [mailto:blind-computing-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Steve Boodram Sent: Friday, February 15, 2013 7:16 PM To: blind-computing@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] Winamp not playing tracks automatically It use too but not sure what went wrong. Re: [Blind-Computing] Network Attached Storage RAID.
ok, by the information your giving you do not want a nas (network... attached storage, I.E. Ethernet) but a multi drive external drive unit, there are three major things, one you can get a robo-drive, its a 4 drive 3.5 inch drive unit that can use various different raid like storage methods including ones that include striping so that if a drive goes out in the unit you can plug in a replacement drive and rebuild the lost drive from data in the stripes. the nice thing about the robo-drive (available from various vendors, tiger direct is one of them, although there out here in California not that far from me so I could go get one directly) is that it doesn't matter the size of the drive, if you have to old HD's of the G-bite variety, and you buy 2 new t-bite drives and run out of cash, it will take them all and integrate them into your super external drive if later you get a sale and get 2 more T-bite drives, you can literally pull out a drive and rebuild it on a new drive with the striping and the robo-drive is a normally USB attached unit, you have to buy a modular adapter to use it as a NAS unit. a second thing to think on is I know there are two HD external drive units for 2.5 in drives, and there may be units which handle three or more available (been a while since I really looked). so you could make a nice sized portable drive with those. 3. as far as brands, I'd stay with the biggies, or companies like Sabrent (which I know make quality cases I use them for my hand made drives), for raid units, I would stay with the better known units, and/or talk to the folks at newegg.com about them, I have little experience with them and its been years so I'm totally out of date on the topic. one thing I have learned, the most expensive are generally good, the middle priced one's will have a few good and a few not so good companies, but there not going to get a decent rep if there selling Junkers, and low end is just that. something is making them that much less expensive, what might it be? If so, which ones work which ones deserve to be stomped into a wood chipper turned into mulch with extreme prejudice? I'm going to be using the NAS with my laptop, so installing a physical RAID controller card isn't an option, and I'd prefer if the box had either a USB or E-SATA connection to the laptop. (WiFi doesn't like me tends to scramble itself due to my magnetic personality. *Chortle*) Another reason to prefer the physical connection is that I'm not fond of having to File Transfer Protocol (FTP) my own files across my sluggish network to my NAS box. It would take too long to FTP multiple TeraBytes of data to the NAS, when I could just plug in the USB or E-SATA cable from the NAS to my laptop, and move them via Windows File Explorer like I would any other files. Since I'm connected via Cable Modem (no Wireless), the RJ45 jack of the laptop is already in use, so I can't connect it that way. For important updates, tab to the Important updates link open it to see what's available. In optional updates you have to check the updates you want installed whereas in important updates, they are all checked you need to uncheck the ones you don't want to install. I'm writing this from memory, boy are you in trouble LOL LOL, because I don't have any new updates at the moment. Also, there is an installed updates option that you can click on to see what updates have been installed. Gerry, you might want to email the owner of the lists' you're having problems with make sure you're still subscribed or to see if there are problems with others using the same internet provider as yourself. Re: [Blind-Computing] is that possible to use ms office 2003 and2010 both?
actually it may be possible with a custom install of the earlier office set, using something like office 2003 alpha (a name not expected by so not used in the 2010's install and over write functions) and then installing office 2010 with its standard setup you may be able to put both on one machine, but I think this may be the last combination like this that will be doable. the auto integration is being extended in each version of office and is becoming more complete and inescapable. good luck for whatever reason your wishing to do this, inthane -Original Message- From: Blind-Computing [mailto:blind-computing-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Mujtaba Merchant Sent: Monday, January 14, 2013 5:04 AM To: blind-computing@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] is that possible to use ms office 2003 and2010 both? Re: [Blind-Computing] Problems with EBay and Facebook
ah, well you could use jaws, it still works there on eBay (I don't use facebook so can't comment on them), you could update to windows 7 which is not that hard to learn and can be customized to look just like XP, or you can play with your dos when it comes out! live and learn, you make it sound bad, when it's actually a good thing inthaneelf -Original Message- From: Blind-Computing [mailto:blind-computing-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Eleni Vamvakari Sent: Thursday, January 03, 2013 1:21 PM To: blind-computing@jaws-users.com Subject: [Blind-Computing] Problems with Ebay and Facebook Over the past several months, I've been having major problems with Ebay. I've noticed that the combo boxes for sorting items, as well as the edit boxes for choosing price, and the regular links for things like buy it now, the various categories, location, etc. have all become inaccessible. They now look like a combination of links and check boxes, which do nothing when I click on them. I've tried both Firefox, which is my main browser, and Internet Explorer. Sometimes, they work properly, but now, neither one is working, and these problems appear on both browsers, where previously, I was able to use IE for the purpose. Firefox also started acting normally, a few days ago, but has now resumed this strange look. The ad-ons manager in Firefox has also become inaccessible. I also have to use the mobile version of Facebook with both browsers, since it's very difficult to use the main site on Firefox and virtually impossible with IE. When I get e-mails of notifications from Facebook, they all use the www. version of pages. But I can't get to the address with IE, as I can with Firefox, in order to edit it to m. so that I can view things on the mobile site. I also can't update IE, because I'm using Windows XP, and 7 is the last version that will work with my os! So basically, I'm left with only a few options. 1. Change to a version of Windows which I have no idea how to use, and no desire to learn, one which is far more complicated than what I already have. 2. Buy another Mac (which is ridiculously expensive) so that I can upgrade to Mountain Lion, or buy more memory for my Macbook so I can upgrade to Lion. Both have better navigational features than Snow Leopard, but I'm not a huge fan of the Mac. Please do not suggest to me that I buy an iOS device. I don't like touch screens and the like, nor do I wish to change to Linux. 3. Continue using Firefox and uninstall/reinstall it every time Ebay starts acting up, hoping that will fix the problem (it didn't today), or I don't like an add-on and need to delete it, or do a system restore each time. 4. Wait for my MS-DOS 7.10 machine, which should be coming soon. I've heard that these sites are accessible with DOS browsers. For the record, I use NVDA as my screenreader. Has anyone else experienced these problems? If so, what solutions have you found? This is really upsetting me! What's worse is that both Ebay and Facebook have wonderfully accessible mobile pages, but they don't have many of the basic features of their main sites. Re: [Blind-Computing] system restore
ok, interesting, I never had this much trouble with accessing system restore in windows XP )nor do I know on three out of five machines still operating here). I do not need to use all these out of the ordinary keystrokes and such, h well if you need more help I can go through my simpler version of these instructions with you while running one of my XP machines concurrently. and if your on win 7 can accommodate that as well, since two machines here run it inthaneelf inthane...@roadrunner.com -Original Message- From: Blind-Computing [mailto:blind-computing-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Mike B. Sent: Thursday, December 27, 2012 1:56 PM To: blind-computing@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] system restore Hi Anna, Below are 3 different explanations on how to find run a restore point. Read all of them to see which 1 you can follow the best. #1: Restoring your computer using System Restore, and Jaws. This procedure was used successfully with Jaws 6.2, on an eMachine computer, with an Intel 2.8ghz processor, 256mb ram, and 80gb hard drive, with the display resolution set at 50% of the maximum available screen resolution, and color pallet set at highest 32 bit. 1. From the system restore window, choose, restore my computer to an earlier time, and tab to the next button, and press enter. 2. Use control home, to move to the top of the page, then arrow downuntil you hear the current month and year. while arrowing down the page, you will hear instructions for restoring your computer. 3. While the cursor is positioned on the current month, shift tab, and you will be on the previous month button. if you want to see the restore points in the previous month, press enter on the previous month button. 4. Follow the above steps to locate the month from which you want to select a restore point from. Each time you select the previous month, or next month, you can use the up and down arrow keys to move thru the text on the selected page. 5. Once you have selected the month you want, from the available choices,, arrow down the page until you hear the day of the week you want. This is where a simple NotePad file of your restore points comes in handy. After making a restore point, if you record this imformation in a file, you can refer to it to see the exact date you want to restore to. This makes it quicker to locate a restore point in the restore point calendar. 6. place your cursor on a day of the week, and then tab until you hear Jaws read a restore point, and from here you can use your up and down arrow keys to see the list of restore points on the page. 7. once you have found the restore point you want to use, tab to the next button, and press enter. 8. Here you should get a confirmation page, so, start at the top of the page, and arrow down to read the imformation. 9. If you are satisfied with your selection, then tab to the next button and press enter. The system restoration should begin. 10. Do not disturb the computer during this process, your machine should re-boot when the restore operation has been completed. There may be a restore confirmation screen presented to you when the machine re-boots, and you can okay this dialogue to close it, and resume using your computer. NOTE: This is how the process went on the system mentioned above using one particular version of Jaws, and does not reflect how Jaws will read the imformation on every system. #2: From: Gerald Levy When you launch the System Restore wizard from System Tools on the Accessories submenu of the Start menu, tab around the second page of the dialog until you land on shows the previous day button. Sometimes, you may land on shows the next day button and skip over the one for the previous day. If this happens, simply Shift-tab once to the previous day button. Hit Space on this button and then go to the top of the page with Control-Home. Arrow down until you land on that day's llist of restore points. If that's not the one you want, tab around to the shows previous day button, and repeat until you have gone back a few days to find a restore point you want. HTH. Gerald #3: From: Gene gsas...@ripco.com Here is more information. I said in my last message that System Restore in XP uses a somewhat nonstandard interface. It appears the interface causes later versions of JAWS to work differently with it than earlier versions. I don't know how much you know about System Restore. My Accessible World presentation gives a lot of information about System Restore for those not familiar with the utility and advises on how to use it in ways that will avoid possible problems such as unintentionally uninstalling programs. If you don't want that much information, you can skim my presentation untuil you get to the parts you want to listen to. But I'll provide some information that may allow you to use it with your current version of JAWS in this message. Your version of JAWS may not allow you
