[Chevelle-list] Column shift steering coulmn problems

2004-11-12 Thread Dan McIntosh

Hi all..
I'm having some trouble with the column on my 62
Impala..
The shifter feels very very "loose"... like
the detents are almost not there or something..
When it is all the way up, which should be park, it
is actually in reverse, makes it fun when pumping the gas and starting the car,
lol..
All the way down, which should be low, is actually
drive.

Looking for any info on this problem. Should
I be looking at column problems, could it be the linkage, or the trans
itself.

Thanks all!

Re: [Chevelle-list] Back Package tray ideas

I built a tray for some 6X9's for my old 64
Impala.
I used 1/4" thick tempered hardboard, covered with
a layer of cotton batting, and then some color matched vinyl.
The factory one had a taller "finishing strip" on
the front edge, so I recreated that as well.
The result was, it looked like stock, but provided
a great mounting surface for the speakers.

you can kinda see it in this picture.

bench-checking is yes, you can. You assemble the Megasquirt in a
circuit-by-circuit basis. At the end of each section,
there is a test procedure so that you know your work up until that
point is correct. It's all covered in detail in the
manual. Also, there is a seperate board called the
Stimulator that can be plugged into a completedMegaSquirt. The
Stimulator basically mimics the signals the various the
sensors put out. If you buy a MegaSquirt, spend the few extra
bucks for a Stimulator. You're considering one those
LT1 intakes, eh? I know there are folks who've done it
successfully, but I guess I'd just like to see one in person.
The upside is that LT1 setups are *cheap*. I'm not exactly sure
why, but I saw several at Carlisle and on ebay for under 200,
complete. I wasn't ready to try something like that for
my first EFI project. I finished my engine harness last
night. I need to install a fuseblock and fuses for the
fuel pump, injectors, o2 sensor heater and I'm done
electrically. Then I all I have left is the o2-sensor-bung into
my header, and plumb the fuel system. I would be really happy if
I can make it idle by Halloween. Hey Rick (or
other TPI swappers), what did you use for a throttle cable? The carb

[Chevelle-list] my flywheel is missing some teeth

2004-09-29 Thread Dan McIntosh

Howdy!
My new ride wont start. Thinking it was a starter
malfunction, I removed it from the car. When I glanced up at the flywheel,
I noticed that 6 teeth were virtually non-existent.
It seems like if I spin the motor a little bit, the
flywheel will move and the starter will engage on good teeth. But my
question is, if it doesn't start on the first revolution, and it hits this spot
again, will it blow right by the bad spot due to momentum, or will it stop
spinning the motor again.
I want to drive this damn car already, but
something is keeping me from doing so!
Also, if it does start, and I park somewhere, and
the flywheel just so happens to stop in the bad spot again, is there a quick
remedy, such as leaving the car in drive and pushing on it or
something?
Thanks all!

  Your flywheel will
continue to frustrate you. It will eventually chew the teeth up on your

Ya, it's an auto trans, so the proper term is
flexplate? Cool.

Wont I need to drop the trans to replace that

Dan , if it does stop on the bad spot, you will need to turn
the motorover to get it to a good spot. Not very easy to do unless
you happento have a breaker bar socket for the crank
bolt. You really needto get it fixed. A
flexplate for an auto tranny is cheap. If its a fly wheel, a shopcan
remove the old tooth band (?) and install a new one. The teethare on
a band that is heated and placed over the flywheel. As itcools it
contracts to flywheel size. Never done it myself, but somepeople do
the change at home.- Original Message -From: Dan

  You know when
your lowrider is really low when your flywheel starts to lose
  teeth!

  If you had a
manual, it would be easy to roll the car in gear and spin the engine a
bit. With an auto, I'm not sure you can do much to move the engine once
it is off. You could carry a long handled wrench with a socket for the
crank snout (assuming your engine is newer and has the bolt) bolt so you can
turn it when you need to...

  Either way, you
need a new flywheel big time. It may only be a few teeth, but the whole
balance of the engine will be off. The flywheel is bolted to your crank,
and now there is a slight imbalance of the flywheel. Drive for a while
at the right resonant RPM and you could cause nasty damage. I expect
actual chances of breaking your crank are close to zero, but I would want to
get a new flywheel as soon as possible.

  When you replace
the flywheel, see if you can guess why this happened. Did you engage the
starter while the car was running, or is the starter misadjusted? You
don't want to have this happen to your replacement!

I decided that the aftermarket serpentine systems was out of
myleague...and maybe a matter of opinionway overpriced, since it
hasgone up by hundreds of dollars since they first came out.It was
suggested to me to look into a Chevy Truck 454 serpentine systemfor my 396
big block. I found the local dealer had the brackets in stockand I got
them for a discount since they had been on the shelf for awhile. Picked up
the crank pulley and power steering pulley as well. Hadto go with an
aftermarket water pump pulley to get a grooved one. Seebelow on
why. These mounting brackets do NOT look near as pretty as the
aftermarketaluminum systems. However, it did two other things for me that
I wantedas well:#1, It allowed me to put my alternator on the
driver's side to mount theA/C compressor on the passenger side and shorten
the lines and neaten upthe look of A/C compressor mounting.#2 I
had read that when you turn a water pump backwards that you loseabout 20%
cooling efficiency. Having a big block with A/C and knowing Iwould be in
long lines on hot days cooling was priority #1 !!! But..I still wanted
to go serpentine. OK, I'm hard headed...here's wherethe Scandinavian part
comes in ;)The steel brackets allowed me to weld on a mount to put on
an idlerwheel on the driver's side of the water pump pulley. This allowed
me todouble back the belt, after going over the crank pulley and water
pumppulley, to go to the A/C compressor.I have a link to a picture
of the system as I was putting it together. It gives the best view of the
pulley and water pump. I'll post anotherpic of the final
  product.http://home.earthlink.net/~csmartin33/images/engine%20drivers%20side.jpg

[Chevelle-list] front running light conversion

2004-07-26 Thread Dan McIntosh

Hi all,

On my 64 Impala, when I turn on the main
headlights, the running lights turn off. Exactly the same as when I had my
65 Malibu.

I tried on the Boo to wire in a relay that would
allow them to stay on, but it didn't work out well at all.

Has anyone done this, or seen a website detailing
how this could be done?

Thank you.

Thank you Rocky!!

I just did it, and it works perfect. Looks
much nicer in the front now. Also looks safer (at least in my
opinion).

Very much appreciated!

Dan,Here is a reply from a post on Team Chevelle in
1999from someone who did the same thing.Starting in 1968, when
side-marker lights wereintroduced, the parking lights remained on when
theheadlights were switched on. Prior to that model year, the parking
lights switched off when the headlightswere switched on. I believe this
pertains to all GMvehicles.I own a 67 SS396 Chevelle, and found an
easy way tochange this without adding anything or cutting anywiring
(and its completely reversible). The hardestpart, especially on a 66-67
Chevelle (with A/C yet),is removing the light switch from the
dash.Play it safe, and disconnect the battery first.
Thendisconnect the light switch from the dash, and drop itdown below
the edge of the dash. Before you unplug thewiring harness from the switch,
look at the positionof the purple wire in the connector. It will be in
aslot which is at the end of the switch, farthest fromthe dash. Look
for an open slot in the conector whichis at the other end of the
connector, towards thedash. Remove the connector from the light switch,
andthen release the terminal of the purple wire from theconnector
using a small screwdriver (you do this fromthe light switch side of the
connector). Insert theterminal of the purple wire into the open slot of
theconnector which you identified earlier (the one closerto the dash).
Then just reconnect the wiring harnessto the light switch, and reinstall
the light switchinto the dash, and reconnect the battery. Now
theparking lights will function as before in the halfwayposition, but
remain on when the headlights areswitched on.I did this two years
ago on my Chevelle and on a 65Impala, and haven't had any problems from
it. I don'tremember if there are any numbers on the slots in
theconnector, or if there was more than one open
  slot.Rocky=A Man And His

Adjustable air bag suspension. hehe.

Maybe big block springs would lift it a
little.
Are you still running the original
springs?
If so, chances are they're wore out and have lost

want to avoid hitting the ground as much as possible. What i want to do is
raise the car in the rear about 3 inches and a few inches in the front. I have
hear that i can just install some airshocks in teh back and that will lift it
enough but i don't really want to put all that weight on the shocks instead of
the springs sharing their duties.what are my options? i have seen spacers
for springs and even for shocks. I have also hear that you can take station
wagon springs and put them in to give you a bit of a lift.I'm sure

it is very, very slow.

I have the stock powerglide, and 3.something to 1
rear gears..

4 bbl edelbrock 600 carb, power plus aluminum dual
plane intake, stock ram horn exhaust manifolds with 2.5" duals with
glasspacks. HEI dist with good 8.8mm wires.

What do I need to do to get some power out of this
thing. It is such a dog as is... I have super skinny 13" tires and cant
even do a burnout most of the time..

I'm not looking for 8 million horsepower, just
something a little more respectable than the 110 HP is feels like I have
now..

do I need to build up the motor some, or would a
trans swap to a 200R4 be the way to go?

Thank you for any help you can give..

  Dan,

  Just a question for
ya, when you “finally” get it up to highway speed, and then you get on it,
does it go pretty quick??? I’m
  guessing it does. I have a 350
  that was backed by a 2speed powerglide…. I changed to a TH350, and MAN what a
difference. I have a first gear
that in the neighborhood of 2.5 where as the powerglide is about 1.75. I can now “Throw Smoke” when ever I
feel like it, from a dead stop or rolling. I’d bet that with the tranny swap you’d get all the power you’d need (not want J). I hope this helps. And of course I could be totally
wrong, and if that’s the case.
The list will surely let you know.

Flowmaster makes a nice kit for A bodies with 2.5 inch pipes
and Flowmaster 30s. The sound is not quiet if
that is what you are looking for. It has a throaty idle and
gets loud above 4000 RPM. Got mine on Summit Racing for

"match" the pipe size with the volumetric efficiency

[Chevelle-list] timing questions

2004-04-18 Thread Dan McIntosh

Hi all,
I set my timing yesterday on my motor with the
vacuum advance disconnected..
I set it at 8° BTDC, and it runs great.until I
hook up the vacuum advance again, at which point it starts wanting to stall
right off idle, and backfiring out of the exhaust..

any ideas what my problem is? The dist. is a brand
new HEI unit...

thanks

Re: [Chevelle-list] timing questions

yes, I capped off the vacuum line while setting the
timing..
the dist. is an aftermarket no name HEI. I believe
it has an adjustable vacuum advance..
Its almost like the advance is coming on to
soon...
anyone know how I can test that?

thanks

Dan, Are you blocking off the vacuum while you are setting
your timing? Maybe plugging is a better word. If not your timing will change
substancially once hooked back to the dist. Just a thought.

I know its a long shot, but, who

Chrome anything on an engine is junk, but that is just my

put an aluminum pump on it and save yourself the
trouble.Tom

Re: [Chevelle-list] chrome water pump

The first one was a chrome plated steel pump from Summit racing.
The latest is a chrome plated aluminum pump made by ???.

these chrome ones have bit me twice, and it's starting to hurt!

As far as Chrome water pumps go they are not junk unless you get a
rebuilt one that is done with an inferior seal. Many chrome parts on a motor
can and will leak after a period of time or even upon installation if not
install properly for example over torquing the bolts and crushing the gasket.
Chrome water pumps are a little different as they start life as a standard
cast water pump as would have originally come from the factory. Many other
chrome parts such a s timing covers and valve covers use very cheap and thin
metal as the base for there chrome product which makes them prone to oil
  problems.

massive amounts of pictures, and what not, you might want to look into

Just wanted to let you guys know that we are having a huge used parts

the new facility doesn't want us storing all of our used parts.
Everything used in our back shop is for sale, and prices are dirt

accepting reasonable offers on anything, and everything. Let us
know what you are looking for, or feel free to ask us any questions

[Chevelle-list] temperature sensor..

2004-01-30 Thread Dan McIntosh

Howdy..

I'm putting an electric fan on my car this year,
and bought a temp. sensor to control the on/off cycle of the fan.
The switch is supposed to be installed in one of
the heads..
Wouldn't it be better to install the sensor in the
radiator?
after all, the fan is blowing on the radiator, not
the engine..
The switch is set at 192° on/ 182° off. I have a
180° thermostat.

Any input is appreciated. Thanks.

You really should be using a puller to get the sprocket off, you can get
one at just about any auto parts store. For a stock motor, set the lower
gear on 0. +2 advances the timing by 2 degrees increasing horsepower, -2
retards it increasing the torque. Even on my high horsepower 454, I have
it set at 0. You don't need to worry about degreeing in the cam on a
stock replacement chain, just make sure you line up the dots on the 2
  sprocketsand bolt it up.

Pulling with these is find. Yes even with alum heads and intakes while
pulling the trans with the engine. That weight is distributed through a whole
lot of studs and/or bolts. Do watch out for the lift plate though... most of
them are welded pretty cheesy and they may break with big weight.

  Hey Everyone,

  Well, I went and
put air bags on the Chevelle...and I must say, it looks awesome. I will post
pictures on my webpage here in a day or so. But I have my sway bar, and I was
just wondering if anybody needs one? Its off my 66 Chevelle its the thicker
  one, polyurethane bushings also.

What would 710mm equate to in inches? I bought a pair of big
Pirelli reartires for my 69 Elky and the width is 360mm and the overall
diameter islisted at 710mm.Clint HooperHH Custom,ownerLT5
