Dennis,

What if the gearbox had been tightened before to compensate for the worn out
steering, then when you put on nice new stuff the gearbox is too tight??? Just
thinking out loud here.

The alignment guy has more than 25 years experience and
seems to know his stuff. No work was done on the column or
box and it handled fine before.

We did space original size 14x5 wheels out an inch.

Thanks,

Before I forget! Did they adjust the play in the steering box with the
suspension in the air? If not then you will also have the centering problem
and the steering will be stickey!

shooting for (70s- 80s street machine) or it might not anyway whats your guys'

then in 1965 it was "this car is pretty good, but its not perfect." Then in
1966 it was "this is pure perfection." After that it just all went downhill.

What bases are you referring to? The actual frame? Or the covers that go on
the sides and back? From GM they were metal...but reproduction are plastic.
They are physically the same from 66-72, except 66 doesn't have a button
release, its on the side for 67, and then it's in the middle on the back for
68-72. Just going off memory here.

[Chevelle-list] Time for a new engine!

2009-07-10 Thread bad66chevelle454

Hey everyone,

Well for the last few months my Chevelle has been backfiring and running like
crap. I finally figured out what the deal was yesterdayThe exhaust valve on
#8 is burnt. The motor is old and tired. So I'm going to rebuild it.

So any idea's for engine combo's?? I don't have a bunch of money to spend on
this but I would like to bump up the performance of it. Right now it's a really
stock 454, 8:1 compression. I'm thinking about bumping up the compression to
9:1, adding a cam, and if I can afford them, maybe some aluminum heads. I think
that would really waken up this motor. But basically this is a street car
that's cruised 99.9% of the time. So I want the drive-ability.

Anybody else care to chime in?

Thanks!

Good thing yah caught it. My car had one on it when I bought it. It was fine

Just a little caveat emptor... When I built the engine for my El Camino 4 or 5
years ago, I put one of those shiny chrome thermostat housings on it. It rotted
from the inside and developed a hole, which caused a bad leak. Today I bought
the good old fashioned cast one and the walls of it are substantially thicker.
I was lucky not to get stuck somewhere. I first noticed it when I was just
moving the car from one side of the street to the other for parking
regulations.?

The check valve could be bad I suppose, but unlikelyYou can get boosters
from your favorite Chevelle/El Camino parts store. My favorite is True
Connections, www.true-connections.com 1800-600-4144 and I know they have them.
I don't know the price off the top of my head though.

I don't personally know of a way to test those boosters to see if they are good
or not. Other than what you're describing sounds like a bad booster. Might want
to do a search around to see if there is a way to test them before you shell
out the money for a new one.

the car as dry as possible – possible sediment might be a consideration on how
dry you run it with the engine.  Naturally, disconnect the hoses and sender
wiring before removing and maybe even flush out the tank with water if possible
and let sit for a day or two with the cap off to help ventilate before dropping
the old one.

A floor jack and either a thin piece of
plywood or thick cardboard between the jack head and tank to spread the weight
when dropping the old tank.  A buddy helping to keep the tank on the jack would
be nice too.

Has anyone tried this stuff? I wonder if it will work on white letters?

White Wall Wipes
We know the routine all too well: Buy a new set of whitewall tires, and
in a month’s time, all four look like they’ve been immersed in pan of
coffee — Yellowed. it takes a half-day’s worth of scrubbing to bring
the bright white back to tip-top shape. To help rectify the seasonal
dilemma, Detail Pro now offers their new White Wall Wipes.

The soft, premium wipes — designed specifically for daily maintenance
of whitewall tires — are pre-moistened with a specially designed
cleaning solution that
removes brake dust and road grime at home, car
shows or cruise-ins without the need for a hose and bucket. A single
canister of Detail Pro’s White Wall Wipes costs $5.99; two-pack,

My 65 Malibu went through the same situation.  Found that the engine
number was different to the original registration certificate.  The
Malibu was standing since 1982!!!

Problem was solved through the local Licensing Office and Police
Vehicle Theft Unit.  The numbers were corrected at no cost and the
Malibu is now registered in my name.  You should have a similar system

going to call the courthouse tomorrow and see if the VIN on the car is
still out there or if it has been junked, or if the danged thing is
stolen!!!  The guy I got it off of had it for almost 20 years sitting
behind his barn and I traded him out of it with an old 69 pickup I had,
I have known him forever and THOUGHT he had checked this stuff out,
thats what I get for thinking. Oh well if I cann't get it titled I

Hey Larry,

You can build yourself a really nice BBC. As far as crate engines go,
they are alot of options I'm sure you realize. I don't have any
experience with them, so I can't say much. However, I've done a bit of
research also, and I'd LOVE to do the ZZ502/502 crate from Chevy. It's
EFI, and all the computer and everything are hidden under its tunnel
ram. Basically you plop the engine in there, and for the EFI end of it,
you connect a ground, a power wire, and a fuel feed/return and that's
it. No figuring stuff out. I've heard from word of mouth these are
great set ups. When I save up enough, I think this is the route I'm
going to go.

Jim,

I just got done insulating my Chevelle. I went on this website, called
Sound Deadener Showdown... www.sounddeadnershowdown.com and read all
the reviews. I went with their suggestion, the Raamat product.
www.raamaudio.com The owner of Raamat called me right after I placed my
order to insure I had ordered the right thing, what my plans were,
etc...If you have any doubt about what to order, call him first and
talk to him! He's a super nice guy. I ended up putting a layer of
raamat, then his foam, another layer of raamat, and then another layer
of foam on top of that on my floors. I have two layers of raamat and
one layer of foam on all my doors, and a layer of each on the roof of
my car. I will say it cuts the road noise down a considerable amount!
I've only driven my car about 4 hours total since putting it back
together, so I'm not sure about heat yet. Both were great products that
are easy to work with. Good luck-

Re: [Chevelle-list] 66 rewired

I haven't completely rewired my carbut I've done a fair share of work on
it. If you want to just rewire everything stock, I HIGHLY recommend M&H Wire
Harness's. I used one of their harness's in my 66, and it was perfect. Colors
the same as original, came with all the new clips/connectors, correct lengths,
etc. I know that True-Connections, www.true-connections.com stocks and sells
M&H harness's. I've never used or seen Painless wiring harness's, so I don't
know about themthe only thing I've heard about them is that they are more
of a generic type harness.

As far as wiring...it's pretty involved. There is a forward lamp harness,
engine harness, dash harness, intermediate wiring, and the rear lamp harness.
Not impossiblebut requires a decent amount of work.

 Larry,

Sometimes over the years, the fenders will shrink up, so you have to buy fender
extensions to make them the correct length. :o)

Totally kidding, of course.

[Chevelle-list] Fwd: American Racing Wheels for Sale

2008-06-10 Thread bad66chevelle454

Hey List,

I still have these wheels for saleI'm dropping the price even more because
I want them gone!

I have two rims and tires for sale. American Racing CL 205's, 18x8, 4"
backspacing. They have Nitto 555 tires, 285/35ZR18 in size. They are in mint
condition, but are used. They have approximately 500 miles on them. You can see
in the photos how spotless these are, even the backside of them.

I bought 6 of them off a guy, and now I'm selling the two that I dont need.
These were on the rear of his stock 1970 Chevelle, without any rubbing or
rolling the fender, so they will fit.

I'm asking?only $650?for the pair, I was asking $900. Just about 3 months ago
when I bought them off the guy, I paid $800 for them, so I'm taking a loss
here. I'd like to have a local pick-up, but I could ship them. I have no idea
what that would cost though, but I live in Moreno Valley, CA(by Riverside), my
zip code is 92555. I was quoted 1200 bucks at a local tire and wheel shop for
two of these rims with who knows what kind of tires. On Newstalgia wheels
website, its $1,187 for two rims and tires, and that doesnt include shipping.

Feel free to ask me any questions.

There isn't a dash bolt kit, but there is a interior screw kit. It comes with
the screws that attach the lower dash to the upper dash, but not the bolts.
There is about 8-10 screws, 2 bolts per side, a bolt in the middle, plus the
steering column nuts that hold the dash in.

The heater isn't hooked upand it wasn't before I bought the car. There is a
hose coming off the core, and I tried spraying water there, to see if I could
get the heater to work, and it looks like its plugged solid.

The oil is perfect, nice and clean, smells normalthat's why I was a little
stumped about this black water. But I'll drain/fill/run it a few times, and I
think that should clear up my problem.

Thanks everyone!

I agree with John. BUT I would hook up the heater and turn it on so as to flush
all out that may be settled in. How does your oil look? Smell? Check for any
trace of anti-freeze in the oil just to be sure you don't have a bigger problem.

[Chevelle-list] Black Radiator Water?

2008-06-09 Thread bad66chevelle454
Hey All,

A few months back I bought this 62 Cadillac. It had been sitting, not running
for roughly 7 years. Just about two weeks ago I got it driving. I rebuilt the
carb and water pump on it, and did a general tune it. It runs like new, and
I've driven it about 100 miles or so this past week. Well this weekend I was
checking the fluids on it...I pulled the radiator cap, and the water was black.
I stuck my finger in there, and it looked like I stuck my finger in black
grease. The water was barely down. It doesn't run hot, on the gauge, from C to
H, its only about a quarter of the way up. When I rebuild the water pump and
all that, it wasn't black water.

What could cause that? The oil is nice and clean, no water in it. The engine
doesn't smoke. Could it be the old radiator hoses or something? The heater
isn't hooked up either.

Any ideas? I figure I'll flush it out, drive it some, then see if it happens
again.

Thanks,

-Tim

What I mean by overheating is that the temp rises substantially at idle and if
I let it idle long enough, it would eventually bubble over (but I never let it
get that hot). I do have a shroud and the radiator is 2 years old and is a
4-core.?I have the standard clutch fan(new clutch) and also a small pusher fan
outside of the condenser.

The aluminum will help. I suggest Alumitech Reproductions...I just installed
one into my 67 Nova, and it looks beautiful, and fit perfect.
www.chevellecooling.com is the website I believe.

They do make high flow water pumps. However just because it flows more, doesn't
mean its better. It might cause it to flow too fast, in that the water wont
have a chance to cool in the radiator, making your car even hotter.

What does your cooling system consist of now? How old is your radiator? Do you
have electric fans, or a clutch fan?

someone telling me that the so-called "high flow" water pumps are no better
than a standard water pump. My overheating seems to really occur at idle (stop
light, traffic, etc.). So here is the question: Has anyone really found a
high-flow water pump for my car and if so, where can i get it and how much?
Also, do you think the aluminum radiator will help?

I'll look and see but The last time I tried I couldn't get to the end of
the pin. The only way I could get to the clip was with a long skinny

 David,

I suppose you could take take the master cylinder off and do it that way. Kind
of the backwards way to do it, but if works, then it works. Let me know what

I don't know how they got the pin in. There are a couple of braces in the
way and the steering column. The only way I can reach the rod is with a pair of
long needle nose pliers. I'm thinking if I take the MC loose I can turn the rod
back in. May be wishful thinking.

Re: [Chevelle-list] brake question

2008-05-17 Thread bad66chevelle454

Mark,

Here's how I do it.

1: Disconnect battery!

2: Put the front of the car up on jackstands, and remove front wheels.

3:?Disconnect tie rods, and disconnect the brake hoses(watch out for fluid!)

4: Using a pickle fork, pop off the top control arm, at the ball joint.
5: Using the pickle fork, pop the spindle off the lower control arm(easier said
than done).
6: Inspect your ball joints and anything else.
7: Put new disc brake spindle on the lower ball joint/control arm.
8. Connect the upper ball joint/control arm to the spindle. Note: You may have
to put a floor jack under the bottom control arm to push it up a bit, so the
top ball joint will reach the lower one.
9: Reconnect tie rod, tighten all castle nuts and insert cotter pins.
10: Do the other side
11: Remove old master cylinder, proportioning valve, and front brake lines.
12: Install new front hard lines, the ones to the brakes and the ones from the
new master. install new porportioning valve, hook up hoses to calipers.
13: Mount new booster, make sure there is a little play with your pedal before
it engages the booster, 1/16"-1/8"! This is very important. Install booster
vacuum hose.
14: Bench bleed the new master cylinder.
15: Install new master cylinder.
16: Bleed brakes(front and rear)
17: Reinstall front wheels.
18: Reconnect battery
19: Go for a test drive.
20: Have a cold beer!

If you have any other questions, as in exactly HOW to do some of this stuff,
please ask. This is just the order in which I would do itor did do it. It's
a fairly straight forward type of job. Good luck, and let us know how you like
it!

I finally got around to changing my rear tranny seal today. I had an
opportunity to use a friend's garage rather than lying in the street, so I
carpe'd the diem.?
?

I just want to pass on to you guys that the trick I found that worked for me
was to punch right through metal of the old seal as close as possible to the
outer edge with a small sharp flat screwdriver, followed by a bigger stronger
screwdriver to make a nice-sized gap in the metal. Next get the small
screwdriver between the tailshaft housing and the seal next to your new slit to
deform the outer edge of the seal, and then use the big screwdriver to pry the
seal out using the tailshaft housing as a pivot point. With this method it
resisted a little then suddenly popped right out.?
?

Things that did not work:?
?

Prying from the inside?
?

Going to auto parts stores - 3 places didn't have a seal removal tool and told
me to use a screwdriver!?
?

Good luck out there...?

Folks,

?

How difficult would it be adapting an SS dash to a
plain old 70 Malibu. I have a line on a beautiful 'grandma' Malibu that looks
like it is going to be the baseline for the 70 Clone that I have been dreaming
of building. The interior is an almost perfect white with a bench. The only
thing?that I would like todo to the interior is to adapt an M21
for the power glide and to replace the dash with an SS dash. Is the dash just a
plain drop in dash that will connect to the stock wiring except for maybe the
tach? Or will I need a whole new wiring harness. The motor would either be a
'turn key' ZZ4, or a crate 502. BUt I am leaning towards the ZZ4 as I can still
get the AC to work with the pump on the ZZ4.

?

Thanks in advanced for any advice,

John from CT.

 Mark,

The 12" do require 15"+ size wheels. My car already had 15" Cragars when I
bought it, so that didn't effect me. Right now I'm running 18's in the front,
and 20's in the back, so I have plenty of room for clearance. Even if you're
dead set against 15" rims, and want to keep 14", the 10" disc is still a
massive improvement over the drums.

Your favorite parts supplier. There is a million different kits out there. What
are your plans for the car? If you want a race car, you might want to do some
Wildwood kit. If your plans are just for cruising, a basic kit will do you

Re: [Chevelle-list] tubular front end

2008-05-07 Thread bad66chevelle454

 Lorne,

There is quite a few different companies out there that make tubular front
ends. Global West, Hotchkis, SC&C are just a few of the top name ones. But my
question to you, what are your plans for the car? Just a weekend cruiser,
strip, race? A simple rebuild of your stock components, with a standard type
disc brake set up(Not a wildwood, baer type), will do you good for a cruising
car. Most people(not all) that put on all the tubular stuff with massive brakes
and things like that, it's purely for show and to have the name. On my car, I
went from 4 wheel drum, to disc/drum, and it was a night and day difference.
Then I went to power disc/drum and it was even better. I'm planning on using
all stock stuff, adding disc to the rear and a sway bar in the rear(already
have one in the front), and calling it good. Mines going to be on the street
cruising 99% of the time, and that's all I need.

I would agree with Tim, or if chroming was too much $$ a nice gloss black
sometimes looks like chrome if it is a nice finish.

What I plan on doingis taking some sheet metal, and covering the firewall.
Not making it 100% smooth and clean, but cleaning it up. That way any holes,
lines, creases, etc. will be smoothed over and filled. I just want to clean
things up a bit. I plan on painting it semi-gloss or flat black. That way the
engine will really pop out. I like when its painted the body color, its a good
look, just not for me.

Re: [Chevelle-list] 1965 Frame & Rearend

2008-04-16 Thread bad66chevelle454

 Larry,

If I were to cut and weld a frame like that, I would use a full-penetration,
butt weld. That would allow you to get maximum strength out of the weld, plus
grind it smooth so it's not visible.

Good luck and if you have any questions, just ask.

I would probably use some angle iron inside the frame for strength or you
could just box it. The El Camino fuel tank mounts way different. It has side to
side mounts(bars) ?under it with straps over the top. Bolts to the
underside of the chassis.

Re: [Chevelle-list] spindles or springs

2008-03-21 Thread bad66chevelle454

I'd say spindles. Most likely the more expensive route, but you're not
sacrificing any ride quality. If you lower it too much with springs, you'd have
to get an alignment also. But the springs would be cheaper, and while I've
never used them, I'm sure the Hotchkis lowering springs ride just as good if
not better then stock. My experience here is on my daily driven S-10. I did
lowering spindles, then did lowering springs. The springs arent Hotchkis, but I
only got about a 1.5" drop out of them. It rode exactly the same as the stock
springs.

Truthfully, either one. The only major difference I'd say is price. If you're
only planning on lowering it a inch or two, then choose whichever one.

What make, model, and engine?

Some oil in the cylinders isn't a bad idea but if the oil pump is driven
by the distributor it's possible to prime the whole oiling system.
Replace the distributor with a drill-driven primer (either bought or
made) and spin the pump for awhile (it helps if the drill can be locked
on). Every minute or so manually rotate the crank 90 degrees until you
go through 2 or a multiple of 2 full revolutions.

It's important to either note the orientation of the oil pump driveshaft
before starting this, or know how to time an engine from scratch...

Re: [Chevelle-list] Electric fans

2008-03-17 Thread bad66chevelle454
Other than wanting to changewhy go electric? You dont have any fittiment
issues. You dont overheat at all. The clutch/fan setup really works the best.
Switching to electric fans only gives you about 5HP at 10,000RPM from what I
remember reading.

However, if I were to talk to anybody about electric fans, call Alumitech
Reproductions. They are a sponser on the Team Chevelle website, and the owner
is the nicest guy you'll ever meet. He can set you up with an electric fan
setup that will work. On a side notemy intake manifold (Edlebrock) has a
spot for a sensoras do the heads. On the Nova I built, I used the push in
style, and it works perfect.

I ?need some advice on choosing an electric fan. I am still running the old
style Clutch set up.
?

I have 1968 Chevelle with 454\425 GM Crate 4 speed. No accessories to drain
my?Powermaster Alternator #8002 Idle 75 amps, output Hwy speed 102 amps. I am
updating the Forward lamp harness and engine harness?so I can switch from the 1
wire setup to a 12CSI hook up that the new harness incorporates. I have also
?ordered a bunch of stuff from MadElectrical to assist in getting things hooked
up with new headlights and other parts.(relays, headlight relays etc)

?

My questions is this. I want to install a Dual 13-inch fan setup. What I have
been reading is that these fans draw about 40 amps idling. Does anyone on the
list use any of the Variable speed Controllers that are offered. If you use a
temp sensor, is it plugged into your cylinder head, or the intake manifold. I
was reading? on Ron Francis's webpage that if you use the Intake Manifold
fitting, you have to allow for a 15 degree difference. I really don't want to
change the upper radiator hose outlet from the Intake, and the only other
option is to use the probes that slide between the fins. I will be running
235\60r15 tires, with 3:55 gears., I usually drive my car to Chevellabration
from Louisville Ky with no problems of overheating? while driving or sitting
still.(not even during the country cruises)...I just feel like making a change.

?

If any of? you guys use the various setups, I would appreciate your input.

[Chevelle-list] [Chevelle List] O/T American Racing CL 205's For Sale

2008-03-17 Thread bad66chevelle454

Hey List,

I have two rims and tires for sale. American Racing CL 205's, 18x8, 4"
backspacing. They have Nitto 555 tires, 285/35ZR18 in size. They are in mint
condition, but are used. They have approximately 500 miles on them. You can see
in the photos how spotless these are, even the backside of them.

I bought 6 of them off a guy, and now I'm selling the two that I dont need.
These were on the rear of his stock 1970 Chevelle, without any rubbing or
rolling the fender, so they will fit.

I'm asking $800 for the pair, or best offer. I was asking $900, but I lowered
the price. I'd like to have a local pick-up, but I could ship them. I have no
idea what that would cost though, but I live in Moreno Valley, CA(by
Riverside), my zip code is 92555. I was quoted 1200 bucks at a local tire and
wheel shop for two of these rims with who knows what kind of tires. On
Newstalgia wheels website, its $1,187 for two rims and tires.

Feel free to ask me any questions.

got the square style with out bleeder screws that I believe to be the original
style that came on the car. After a bench bleed I installed it on the booster
and I had to really force it on. My question is is this normal or is the rod in
the booster a different length for the round and square styles of
cylinders? After I mounted the cylinder it seemed the brake pedal only had a
very little travel and the cylinder felt as if it was bottoming out. Can ya all

I always take extra line, screw them into the master cylinder, then bend them
up and into the reservoir, so that the ends of these lines are submerged in the
reservoir. Fill up the master cylinder with fluid, making sure the ends of the
lines are submerged. Put the master cylinder in a vise, and push on the piston
part of it with a screwdriver. You'll see bubbles come out from the
lines...keep going and going and going and going(haha) untill no more air comes
out. You could do this on the car also...which is what I did. That way you can
just step on the brake pedal. But then you'd need somebody else to tell you

Subject: [Chevelle-list] Wheels for Sale

Hey List,

Thought I would post on here first.

I'm asking $900 for the pair, or best offer. I'd like to have a local pick-up,
but I could ship them. I have no idea what that would cost though, but I live
in Moreno Valley, CA(by Riverside), my zip code is 92555. I was quoted 1200
bucks at a local tire and wheel shop for two of these rims with who knows what
kind of tires. On Newstalgia wheels website, its $1,187 for two rims and tires,
and that doesnt include shipping.

Feel free to ask me any questions.

On a side note: My car goes into paint today. I'm getting off here in a few to

Yeah it does look pretty bad, but fortunately it's mostly condensation (when I
shut it down there?were two?puddles of water directly below the tips).? The
temperature?was around 30 degrees?when I made that video.

Re: [Chevelle-list] 67 Chevelle exhaust exit routing photos sought

2008-02-22 Thread bad66chevelle454

Brad,

Thanks for the info! I wish I had time to run down there and talk to them. My
car is stripped of paint, all replacement sheetmetal is on, exterior is
stripped of any moldings, the entire interior is stripped. They just have to
finish a little welding, do some body work, and paint. I'll do all the
reassembly. Looks like I'm taking it over to a place in Pomona, tomorrow
morning.

I actually just put new wheels on mine, and they are pretty similar to yours. I
bought American Racing CL205's. But mine are 18/20's. I have 4.5" backspacing
in the rear, and 4" in the front...I was just curious how much yours were to
kind of compare. Minus the balljoint area, looks like they fit pretty good!
Maybe a tad snug, but no big deal.

Thanks again!

-Tim

Tim,

?

The paint job was very good.? I did a bunch of prep by removing bumpers, trim,
and some other stuff.? I also bought all the replacement body panels (rust and
previous accident damage).? They did not re-assemble the trim other than the
window chrome.

?

So, for stripping, primer, sanding, and final paint ran about $5K maybe ten
years ago.? They laid down a really thick coat of custom color paint and did a
great job of body prep (no waves) and paint finishing (very smooth).? I might
have the color mix somewhere, but I basically told them I wanted the Chevelle
to make the foreman's yellow '72 Camaro to look dull.? They experimented and
came up with a few possibilities, and this is the final result.

?

The wheels are from?Vintage Wheel Works (http://vintagewheelworks.com/) and are
the V45 wheels with 5 7/8" backspace.? You might be better with a 5 3/4"
backspace as there is minimal clearance between the upper A-Arm ball joint
socket on the Global West arms and the rim.? There is a ton of room to the
outside on the rear, and I did have to pound the wheelwell (trunk) a bit to
make sure the tire did not rub at max compression.? You can see some of this in
the pictures here:

Your new wheels...they are all 17x9.5's? What about tires sizes and
backspacing???

Although I think your cam choice would work, I believe it's at the far end of
what I would put in a daily driver street car.

?

It really depends on what you want. Do you want a car to show off??Is a?lumpy
idle is more important than practicality? If that's what you want, then I think
it's a good choice.

?

Do you want more practicality and drivability? I can only imagine what you pay
for gas where you are. Let's face it, a big block isn't going to get very good
gas mileage by today's standards anyway, but is economy important to you? If it
is, go a little smaller.

?

If you are building a daily driver then my philosophy is this; less is more
when it comes to cams. A lumpy idle is cool but a smaller cam will give you
more power where you can use it...in the lower to mid-range.

?

Even in drag racing less can be more. I have a 3600 pound 71 that runs 11.50s
with a Crane 224/236 @ .050 hydraulic roller in a 461 (.030 over 454). Most
people don't believe that's all the cam I have in it. I think it works as good
as it does because it gives me the bottom end power to get a heavy car moving.

?

Staying within the Edelbrock line, I would recommend this cam for your
application:

"There were just bodies everywhere; it was horrible," said Crystal Gaines, 27,

Gaines said she grabbed her child but could not help her father, William Gaines

"He wasn't breathing, he wasn't moving," she said. "His body was in pieces."

Re: [Chevelle-list] Cam choice?

2008-02-08 Thread bad66chevelle454
I can attest to that. My BBC flattened the cam, so I put in a new, bigger cam.
It was cool...lumpy idle, and when you got on it, it sounded mean as hell. Its
basically a stock 454. Unless it was completely warm, the darn thing wouldnt
idle. I remember the day I had enough. I was coming home from work, uphill on a
long street, in traffic. I had to move 10 ft, take out of gear, left foot on
brake, right foot on gas just to keep it idling. I said screw that, and put a
cam from a stock 502 in it. It lost some top end power for sure, but I think
bottom end it gained a little bit. And you cant beat the fact it just purrs
like a kitten now. Just food for thought.

It might be a two speed motor. The two speed and one speed looked way
different. I'd give True-Connections a call. They get them rebuilt, and they
usually have them in stock. 1-800-600-4144.

My 65 SS has a wiper motor that looks like the ones on the?later model? cars ,

looked and can't find one that? is for the 65, Ground Up has one that looks
like it but for a 64. There are out of them and do not know when they will get
one. It looks like the motor for hidden wipers.

Is there a place I can send mine to get it rebuilt, seems the only? thing I can

Who were you sending the photo to? The mailing list does not accept
photos
(don't think so anyway) and the list does not list cars for sale.

You might try a free photo hosting service like cardomain.com or

Re: [Chevelle-list] Fuel injection!

2008-01-16 Thread bad66chevelle454

Just to give Street and Performance a little boost, I used thier wiring harness
and computer on a 1990 TPI out of a Camaro. Worked perfect and fired right up.
I've called them asking about heater hoses on that car and they knew the
answer. Very smart and knowledgeable guys over there.

I didnt chime in with your problem, because we ran an in-tank fuel pump. You
dont even hear it when the car is running and barely hear it when the car isnt
running(when it cycles on). We ended up getting the fuel lines off a 1990's
Camaro with that motor and bending them to fit our Nova. Used the stock
pressure and return lines. Then we just added a inline fuel filter and called
it a day. The only problems we've had is a clogged fuel filter, and we thought
the fuel gauge didnt work, but it does! Damn near ran out of gas on the way
home one day.

I had a talk with Aeromotive again today! Three components can cause the
problem. Heat from the exhaust or not enough air movement over the fuel pump to
keep it cool. Second, restrictive fuel entry into the pump causing cavitation
or from a non baffled tank and with the surge in fuel you have cavitation. Last
but not least an inadequate wiring. Of course you do need to have a return for
the system! They feel very confident that mine will work. I should know next
week.

Street & Performance wanted me to put in a booster pump in front of the main
fuel pump. Aeromotive wasn’t impressed with the idea. I use Aeromotive on my
Chevelle and Brett in tech support has been very helpful before!!

If it doesn’t work next week, with all the money and effort put into the
design, you’ll hear me scream all the way from Texas!(LOL)

Thanks!

I had a similar but not quite so frequent problem when I first ran my TPI
system.   I  finally resolved the problem (knock on wood) by putting a low
pressure pump near the tank, feeding it to a surge tank and feeding the hi
pressure pump from the surge tank.

Do the pumps give any indication (noise) before they quit?

time to do something different. I took my 46 truck to two different places
and they didn't know their rear from a hole in the ground, hence calling
Aeromotive, which I should have called them sooner, but each time I thought
we had found the weak point!

I know it would be better to put the tank under the bed with an internal
pump, but I don't want to cut an access hole through my new aluminum diamond
plate bed, so I would prefer to use the old tank in the truck. I just want
to know if someone has done it, and it appears you have!! The truck has an
LT1 engine from a 96 Z28.

I have a 1970 El Camino with a 92 TPI engine and 700R4 unit out of a 92
Camaro. I use the A100 pump mounted in the rear in front of fuel tank below
level of tank pick up. Stock fuel pick up and sender installed in tank with
¾" rubber line to pre filter to pump. AN-6 SS line to left side of engine
with Aeromotive fuel pressure/return regulator set to 55#. This return line
goes to Morose EFI fuel return kit that is installed in the gas tank fill
pipe. The fuel rail return line is run in a separate line that connects to
one of the vapor pipes at the top of the tank. From the Aeromotive fuel
pressure/return regulator to fuel rail is another fuel filter, I used a fram

heavy duty filter rated at 200#.

I had this installed in 1999 with no problems with this setup. The El Camino

is a driver and not used for drags so the AN-6 lines satisfy the fuel
supply.  You man need to increase the supply lines for performance
operation.

FYI, the stock or after market in tank pumps are not suitable for use
outside the tank.  The liquid of the fuel is used to cool the pump in the
tank.  If you used this type of pump and shield the pump with Dynomat you
could have prevented the pump from cooling with the air passed over it.

Good luck Leo

Listers-

I just finished the process of galvanizing my frame and coating with POR15
Chassiscoat Black.  It rained the day they galvanized the frame, and they
stored it outside until I had a chance to pick it up the next day.  Needless to
say, the frame was covered with oxidation – white powder.  I scrubbed the
entire frame with POR15’s highly alkaline Marine Clean (Potassium Hydroxide)
using a toothbrush to get the oxidation off.  Yea, it sucked.  Then I treated
with their Metal Ready to etch and leave a zinc phosphate coating that was
supposed to help the paint adhere.  I let it sit all night to dry, and then hit
it with my heat gun in the morning to get any of the last droplets of water out
of their hiding place, and proceeded to paint.

The paint is thick.  I was concerned that I would run out of my quart before
the job was done, so I put a very thin coat on the front.  After it became
apparent that I would have enough paint, I started putting it on thicker.  A
few observations about the paint:

1)  Did I say it was thick?  This is good because you can paint upside down and
the paint does not run down the brush and down your sleeve.

2)  It is prone to drip.  Around any holes in the frame, if you are painting
both sides, check for drips afterwards.  If you are working on a show piece, or
something you are trying to do an original restoration on, this may not be the
best stuff.  They say that it is not a perfect finish, but gets the job done.
So far, I agree.  Coat #2 will look better, I am sure.  Perhaps if I sprayed
it?  I donno – but I don’t have the equipment to spray anyway….

3)  Brush painting a Chevelle frame is a pain in the a$$.  It took me a little
over 3 hours for one coat, and my arms are exhausted.  Why didn’t I do this job
when I was in my 20’s?  This thing is kicking my a$$.

4)  I used about 24oz of paint for the entire frame.  I may have used more if I
laid it on as think on the front end.  I will rectify that with coat #2 later
tonight.

If anyone cares, I may post later after the 2nd coat and let you know how it
went.  Next week I can start putting the suspension back on and get it back on
its wheels.

Herb,? We used the Goodmark hood on the 66 I just finished. It was a major pain

It was made worst by the use of aftermarket fenders. If Harwood makes one buy

I live in Southern California, where its almost as cold as Iowa. :o)?? I know
you said you dont have LPbut for years and years we've had a "Mr. Heater"
that goes on top of a 5 gallon tank. Ours is the two burner model. We turn that
on low, both heaters, and within 20 minutes the garage is fine, warm enough to
work in. I would think if you turned both on to the high position for about 20
minutes it would have the same effect. Just an idea.

I too live in Iowa and yes you are right.? It is a cold winter this year.?
Atleast we had a white christmas this time but now I am ready for spring.?

As far a garage heaters go, I install alot of Reznor heaters in shops, garages,
warehouses etc they are fairly inexpensive to install and you can get a
bunch of different btuh sizes.? Menards carries there own brand of "Reznors".?
I have never put one of theirs in but I dont see any reason that they wouldnt
work ok.? Menards also carries a smaller "ventless" style heater that will heat
up to something like 500 sq feet.? They do work good but if you let them
run?along time, you will start to notice a smell.? Both of those models can be
ran on LP.? You just have to be sure you get the right one.? I personally
install Reznor brand heaters that I get from Plumb Supply (wholesale) but I
believe that Grainger or Dennison also sells them.? If you need any help let me
know and stay warm!!!
