RE: licensing software

2000-06-05 Thread Jae Kang

LDMS (LanDesk Management Suite) from Intel is much more solid product.
SMS (ordinary product as usual from MS ) is very poor.

Also don't forget that if you have very large slow WAN connections,
enabling S/W licensing function is not recommended.
WILL NOT WORK.

Re: Cisco Certified Salaries

2000-06-05 Thread Albert

Yep, I will second that.

I was hired to be the Network and Facility Administrator. I got into
trouble (kind of) because I got tired of hearing one of the junior Sys Admin
complaining about MS when he was repairing a server and help him out. My
boss came by and told me to get back to my stuff and let the junior admin do
his job. He said I was hired to do Cisco and not MS. I am starting to tell
the other staffs (users) that as soon as it come out of the wall jack, it is
not my responsibility and they have to talk to the other MIS staffs.

By the way, I only have two months experiences. (no IT before this job)
Live in a high cost and low IT wage area, Vancouver Canada, and make more
than $29,000us.

Get motivated, I mean studying. Read everything on this list. If you see
ANY thing that you don't understand, find the answer in CCO. Practice at
home every night. Put yourself on a schedule to get your CCNP in four
months. THAN go and have a talk with your boss. If you know your stuff
(even with less than 1 year experiences), you will be able to find a fun job
that pays well and is challenging. I did. I just finish setting up a VoIP
(with help of people on this list). I am now doing the planning for a 144
VoIP setup, collocation for our server farm, planning a redesign of our
entire network.

Oh, start collecting business cards.

I also have some Cisco Configuration Guides that came with the 3600s and

Sure it will work -- if you redistribute. This is where you will possible
see routing loops.

You can also create a tunnel interface on both EIGRP routers and share
EIGRP info that way. This way they will both look like they are directly
connected. Here's a possible config for the tunnel:

 (e0) r1(s0) -(s0) r2(s1) -(s0)r3(e0)

r1 and r3 e0 interfaces are in the 172.16.0.0 address space
All serial interfaces are in the 192.168.0.0 address space
r1 and r3 are running eigrp
r2 is running igrp with someone else

r1:
int e0

We refer to it as Spanning Forest at Ctron.
We have implemented it but using proprietary extensions at this point much like
Cisco has.  As soon as 802.1s is standard we will do the same.

  about dot1q versus ISL

my understanding is that dot 1q runs one
instance of spanning tree per trunk, rather than per vlan as ISL does -
hence if one VLAN is blocking then dot1q disables the entire
  trunk

A collegue of mine reckons that dot 1q now
does as per ISL and runs STP on a per-vlan basis, but the 802.1q spec has

Re: Frame Relay on back-to-back routers (without FR switches)

2000-06-05 Thread Joe Martin

You can do this.

Here's the basics:

R1
interface Serial1/0
 ip address 192.168.2.1 255.255.255.0
 encapsulation frame-relay
 no fair-queue
 frame-relay interface-dlci 16

R2
frame-relay switching
interface Serial1/0
 ip address 192.168.2.2 255.255.255.0
 encapsulation frame-relay
 no fair-queue
 frame-relay interface-dlci 16
 frame-relay intf-type dce

ping 192.168.2.2

Type escape sequence to abort.
Sending 5, 100-byte ICMP Echos to 192.168.2.2, timeout is 2 seconds:
!
Success rate is 100 percent (5/5), round-trip min/avg/max = 1/2/4 ms

TTL of 1 I guess the router will process the packet and if its
supposed to be forwarded will decrement TTL by 1 and the packet should
expire at the next hop.

I think they might be traffic shaping your ftp traffic.

Well, we only suspect that our ISP could have
done some traffic
shaping to limit FTP to a certain limit. But I am not too sure how
they
could do it on a per session basis.. I know we can restrict traffic
not to
peak beyond a certain limit for a given protocol, but if this alone
is
done, then simultaneous File transfers would have hampered the throughput
of all the sessions. The throughput remains the same irrespective of
the
number of sessions opened simultaneously

FTP runs over TCP, that requires an acknoledge for n packets (window).
On a
WAN environment, if you have plenty of BW, delay is going to be one
of the
limiting factors. Other factors are: I/O on your PC, quality of the
TCP/IP
stack (I have Win95 and we connect through a DS-3 to the Internet,
but I
cannot get any faster than 130-150Kbps), etc.
If you try to do the same thing using Linux you might have a better
result.
Win95 and NT 4.0 (not sure what releases) they have a bug on the TCP
stack.
It doesn't negotiate/change the windows size properly. Did you ever
noticed
that sometimes it's faster stop a download and start a new one? That's
the
reason, if the tcp stack in Win95/NT worked properly, it should change
the
window size on the "run", but it doesn't (sliding window).

Hello Friends,
We face a peculiar problem in our company. We
have a 512K access
speed to Internet. Our ISP is VSNL in India. When we do an FTP, we
never
achieve a throughput greater than 100Kbps...Very funny thing here is
we
peak to 512K on our local link to VSNL, if we initiate simultaneous
FTPs.
But for all the FTP sessions, the maximum throughput achieved is only
80 to
100 Kbps.
Is there anyway to restrict the throughput
to a limit for a single
session in the internet cloud, which could be creating this problem
for
us.Can some expert throw some light on this please.?
Warm regards and Thanks in advance
Venkat

This will work. You just need to do redistribution from one to the other
and remember the fact that the IGRP domain in the middle is FLSM based.

Re: EIGRP contiguous AS

2000-06-05 Thread Kenny Sallee

Sure it will work -- if you redistribute. This is where you will possible
see routing loops.

You can also create a tunnel interface on both EIGRP routers and share
EIGRP info that way. This way they will both look like they are directly
connected. Here's a possible config for the tunnel:

 (e0) r1(s0) -(s0) r2(s1) -(s0)r3(e0)

r1 and r3 e0 interfaces are in the 172.16.0.0 address space
All serial interfaces are in the 192.168.0.0 address space
r1 and r3 are running eigrp
r2 is running igrp with someone else

r1:
int e0
ip address 172.16.2.1 255.255.255.0

int tunnel 0
ip address 172.16.1.1 255.255.255.0
tunnel source
tunnel destination

router eigrp 100
network 172.16.0.0
no auto

r3:
int tunnel 0
ip address 172.16.1.2 255.255.255.0
tunnel source
tunnel destination

router eigrp 100
network 172.16.0.0
no auto

RE: SNA device types

2000-06-05 Thread Lima, Frederico

PU 2.1 is not APPN.

PU 2.1 is more a LEN node ( low-entry node ) and it can exist without APPN.

PU 2.1 is the PU type required for the LU 6.2 sessions.

Subject: SNA device types

Darren,
you are mostly right, but a bit mixed up.

In SNA there are PU types and LU types.

The PU type describes the function/capabilities of the device within the SNA
hierarchy:
PU types:
5VTAM (SSCP)
4FEP
3 there is no PU type 3
23274/3174 cluster controller, 3777 RJE station, other devices
(typically
connected to a FEP by a leased line running SDLC 1974-1980s) . Token ring
SNA
gateway (1990s). SNA gateway on a LAN with a CISC router running DLSw to
another
Cisco router on a token ring (1990s-). Any SNA gateway product running on a
server will be a PU type 2.
1I've forgotten what that was.

then when peer to peer networking came into SNA:
2.1 APPN (advanced program to program networking) supports independant LUs.
Includes more recent 3174 etc cluster controllers.

The type of the LU describes what data stream it uses to communicate. ie the
format of the data sent from one LU to another.

LU types
new-fangled ones:
6.1 application to application CICS - not used much
6.2 application to application (APPC)
classic ones:
3 printer attached to a 3174 cluster controller using 3270 data stream
2 3270 display terminal (3278, 3179 etc) your basic "green screen", or
emulation of one on a PC
1 SNA character set - printer or RJE station
0 content of data stream not specified (this was used for program to
program
communication before APPC/APPN came in eg Solve:Netmaster INMC, an Aussie
product)

SLU :
in classical SNA a session is between two LUs. One of the LUs is the Primary
(PLU), the other the Secondary (SLU). The primary LU is the application on
the
mainframe, such as CICS, TSO etc. The secondary LU is the user's terminal.

Hope this isn't too overwhelming and it helps. Feel free to ask more
questions!

Jenny

---
Question for all:

In the SNA hierarchy there are defined types 5,4,2 and 1 nodes.

>From what I've read so far I've assembled the following:

Type 5IBM Mainframe (Runs VTAM) SSCP
& PU5
Type 43705/3725/3745/3746 FEP/Communications ControllersPU4
Type 23174 Cluster Controller PU2
Type 2Token Ring SNA GatewayPU2
Type 1Token Ring Device LU
Type 1TN3270 Terminals SLU

Type 5 & 2Cisco Router acting as DSPU Concentrator PU5
& PU2

Is this anywhere near close?

Does an ethernet client running a TN3270 session also appear as an SLU
or LU?

Sorry if this is basic but SNA is the area that I am definately weakest
and while I can configure up basic DLSW+ services I prefer to understand
the underlying principles.

Darren

RE: Isolation

2000-06-05 Thread Dale Cantrell

Hey guys, don't give up the dream just yet. I've been at this I.T. stuff
8 months and it's been rough, too! But with enough persistance, going to
any/all Cisco seminars, attending user group meetings, I have landed on a
gold mine,,for me. I've started a few days a week with a used router,
switch, IBM equipment, reseller, named Duane Whitlow and Co.
Conrad Viceroy was good enough to take my Hounding with a bit of salt
and let me in. Enough of a plug, but this was Exactly what I needed. Loading
images from TFTP, password recovery, generally checking all equipment before
shipment, gives lots of hands on. I've died and gone to heaven. :>)) My CCNA
date keeps getting pushed back, but I wasn't in any hurry in the first
place. Some of us have harder heads for subnetting to sink into! :>)
Thanks for posting guys.

You are not alone. I'm in the same spot as you are. I have virtually zero
hands on with Cisco equipt. My current position is slowly squeezing my
enthusiasm. In a couple of months, I'm am gone from here and hopefully I'll
find something that will allow me to work with Cisco equipment (nice to have
other types thrown in as well) even though I may have to start at the lower
end. I've already started on the CCNP track and I find it damn difficult to
get through the study material without hands on. I'm hoping to get a couple
of routers on my own because I think classes are just too expensive. Good
luck on your journey.

RE: setting mtu size on a 2611

2000-06-05 Thread Chuck Larrieu

One reason might be a move to voice over IP. While I am not really up to
speed on this yet, I recently attended Cisco sponsored AVVID training, and
this was a point that was made. On the internal network, having a smaller
MTU helps greatly on the voice over side. Voice packets suffer less delay
when data packets are smaller rather than larger. Voice packs don't have to
wait around for large data packets to go through. Less delay = better voice
quality.

I asked specifically about the issues on the data side, and the instructor
did point out that ATM, with a packet size of 53 bytes, was highly efficient
and did not cause data services to denigrate.

I suppose there is the additional overhead of fragmenting and reassembling
large packets. And a major issue if the DF bit is set. One more reason never
to set the DF bit, I suppose.

Why do you want to change the MTU size You are going to walk into

Filtering NetBEUI & IPX on Bridged interfaces

2000-06-05 Thread Terry L. Hartman

I have been looking for a way to filter out NetBEUI & IPX from propogating
across bridged interfaces.

Scenario:

8 - ISL VLANs & 10 - Remote (T1) sites with routed IP and Bridged LAT
traffic. Bridging is enabled for the LAT traffic, however, there are a few
IPX servers which traffic does not need to be seen on any other nets. The
customer also doesn't beleive in removing the extraneous protocols that new
machines ship with (NETBEUI & IPX/SPX) - they say too many machines to
re-configure.

I have attached a protocol analyzer to all VLANs and there is rogue traffic
/ protocols propogating on the LANs.

I want to be able to filter IPX and NetBEUI from leaving the interfaces /
LANs they originate from (bridged) while permitting LAT / DEC traffic. I
figured the best way was with an Access-List 2xx or trying to tunnel,
however, I am having trouble finding the appropriate type codes.

thanx,

gateway (1990s). SNA gateway on a LAN with a CISC router running DLSw to another
Cisco router on a token ring (1990s-).

0 content of data stream not specified (this was used for program to program
communication before APPC/APPN came in eg Solve:Netmaster INMC, an Aussie
product)

SLU :
in classical SNA a session is between two LUs. One of the LUs is the Primary
(PLU), the other the Secondary (SLU). The primary LU is the application on the
mainframe, such as CICS, TSO etc. The secondary LU is the user's terminal.

Hope this isn't too overwhelming and it helps. Feel free to ask more questions!

Jenny

---
Question for all:

In the SNA hierarchy there are defined types 5,4,2 and 1 nodes.

>From what I've read so far I've assembled the following:

Type 5IBM Mainframe (Runs VTAM) SSCP
& PU5
Type 43705/3725/3745/3746 FEP/Communications ControllersPU4
Type 23174 Cluster Controller PU2
Type 2Token Ring SNA GatewayPU2
Type 1Token Ring Device LU
Type 1TN3270 Terminals SLU

Type 5 & 2Cisco Router acting as DSPU Concentrator PU5
& PU2

Is this anywhere near close?

Does an ethernet client running a TN3270 session also appear as an SLU
or LU?

Sorry if this is basic but SNA is the area that I am definately weakest
and while I can configure up basic DLSW+ services I prefer to understand
the underlying principles.

RE: setting mtu size on a 2611

2000-06-05 Thread Clark, Jason

Yeah, I know it's not a good idea to change the MTU. The reason I am doing
this is for testing purposes for a customer. I am trying to test out PMTU
discovery. Basically I want to change the MTU to 1450 on the router and
then enable PMTUD on a Solaris box and configure Solaris with the default
MTU of 1500 and have the two devices negotiate the MTU to 1450.

Thanks

RE: Dialer Pool & Dialer Rotary

2000-06-05 Thread Feliz, Edgar

Dialer maps are considered legacy DDR, Like frame-relay map statements,
while dialer pools are the new kids on the block. Why Cisco's IOS does not
permit both kinds of statements to be used on one BRI interface is a
question for the developers I think.

You should just be able to configure legacy DDR, with multiple map
statements on the BRI interface. Or make both dialer interfaces part of the
same dial pool. So both will have "Dial pool 1" lets say. Because even if
you have different dialer interfaces they can be part of the same dialer
pool.

Hope this helps.

Subject: Dialer Pool & Dialer Rotary

Hi all,

As far as I knew is the Dialer pool, pool-member command allowed us to
assigned a number of dialer profiles to a physical interface.
Dialer rotary-group is only aassign One Dialer profile to one interface
only.

I had int Dialer0 which is configure to dial to remote office and Dialer1 is
configure to dial into the ISP. I had only one physical ISDN interface and I
would like to assign both dialer profile to the BRI interface. Dialer pool
can do the job, but not dialer rotary-group.

While I configure it I realise that I can't assign dialer pool IF , i had
the dialer map map in used.( Dialer0 is configure using Dialer Map & Dialer
1 is without Dilaer Map )

Can anyone here tell me why dialer pool is not applicable if dialer map is
active ??? How can I share single physical BRI interface when i had one
dialer profile with dialer map, and another dialer profile is without dialer
map ???

Thanks.

Start with www.cisco.com. on the lower right you will find links to the
Cisco AVVID architecture. You have a lot of reading to do.

In general, this is not something that you want to just wake up one day and
decide to install. You may want to get ahold of your Cisco sales person, or
a good third party consulting company, and start the educational process.

UOne boxes, if I understand correctly, are the component of an IP telephony
infrastructure that provide services such as voice mail.

All in all, it's about supply & demand plus fortune involved.

Passed support 2.0

2000-06-05 Thread Jim Rampley

I passed support 2.0 last week for my last test for CCNP.  I got an
873 with 692 being the passing score.  Everyone complained so much about
the old CIT test being so poorly worded, I took the new version.  I thought
it was a very well worded test with little ambiguity.

I have several years of troubleshooting experience which came in real
handy.  As a matter of fact, without a bunch of experience or LOTs of lab
time I don't believe this test will easily be passed.  I read the Cisco
Press CIT book, Priscilla's CIT flash cards, and Boson CIT test #2.  (There
are 3, so I just picked one).

RE: new version of 802.1q?

2000-06-05 Thread tgaston

Hello,

I have done some research on this recently. We had an issue with the
Catalyst 4006, which currently does not support ISL trunking. What I found
is that Cisco has implemented PVST+ (Per VLAN Spanning Tree) extention
technologies within their newer switch platforms that allow 802.1q trunks to
do Spanning Tree per VLAN. This ofcourse is not a standard, this someting
Cisco has done within their products. I beleive the standards bodies are
working to allow the standard 802.1q to do STP per VLAN in the future.

In further discussions with the engineers at Cisco, they stated that
implementing 802.1q trunking today does not pose any issues.

Thad Gaston

my understanding is that dot 1q runs one instance of spanning tree per

A collegue of mine reckons that dot 1q now does as per ISL and runs STP

RFC1700 and other useful information - port numbers and more

2000-06-05 Thread Chuck Larrieu

Got to wondering about RFC 1700, being as it is dated sometime in 1994. So I
inquired of the IETF, and was informed that port numbers and other
assignments are now being updated and made publicly available by IANA

www.iana.org

so, check it out: http://www.iana.org/numbers.htm#P your gateway to the up
to date listing of assigned TCP and UDP port numbers, IP protocol numbers,
and more.

Maybe a bit less friendly than the old RFC, but lots of good stuff there.

In any case, RFC1700 is ok, but going forward, IANA is the source of the
latest and greatest.

Re: Frame Relay on back-to-back routers (without FR switches)

2000-06-05 Thread K Sacca

Remember, frame relay is an Interface Specification
only. Frame Relay specifies how a user device such
as a router delivers info to a WAN for transmission.

So he could set encapsulation frame-relay on each
router, but what good that would do I don't know.

You can test F/R back to back as a PVC but I would
do it right and set one up with frame-relay switching

RE: CCNA and subnetting questions

2000-06-05 Thread Cate, Constance

1) Read the question, they will tell you what they want you to know; they
just don't say it very clearly sometimes. Just like the real world where you
have to go plowing through the s&*^ to get to the info you need.
2) If they don't say differently in the question that you read very
carefully, then the assumption is that you cannot use the "zero
subnets."

When you are preparing for a test remember that you are expected to
understand the default behavior of the IOS version you are being tested on.
If the question does not specify a different configuration from the default,
then assume the default. Sometimes the information is implied by some
configuration detail and not directly stated, so. think through all the
implications of the information you are given.

Subject: CCNA and subnetting questions

Hello everybody,

Well, I'm taking a stab at the CCNA this Monday. I'm wondering if, for the
purposes of the exam, that when you get subnetting questions whether you're
supposed to assume that subnet-zero has been enabled or not. I just
recently completed my MCSE, and with all the Microsoft tests the zero
subnets cannot be used. But I've seen it both ways in studying for the
CCNA. Thanks in advance.

Re: VLAN problems with Catalyst 3548G

2000-06-05 Thread Ariel

From what I recall only 1 VLAN interface can be up at one time. Think of
the VLAN interfaces like the sc0 interface on a Cat5000 in that you can
assign the VLAN and IP address of the switch itself for telnet/SNMP or
other remote access to the switch. The difference being you don't have to
reconfigure the VLAN interfaces when you want to change them, just shut one
down and no shut the one you want to work.
If you shutdown the VLAN 1 interface then do a no shut on the VLAN100
interface it should come up, make sure you have console access or telnet
access to the IP address you assigned to the VLAN 100 interface or the
switch may become unreachable..

Also note that even though the VLAN 100 interface is down that VLAN 100
would still exist and work for any ports that belong to that VLAN..

This is the same behavior as the Cat2900XL switches..

I hope this is what you were looking for...

Re: Cisco Certified Salaries

I don't know where you live, but in Denver you'd most likely be making
20k/year more than that with those qualifications. Of course, as usual,
this depends on experience and who you decide to work for, but generally IT
salaries are pretty high here.

Async PPP dial-i on AUX

2000-06-05 Thread peter whittle

Hi all,

I am interested in configuring the AUX port with external modem to
handle ppp dial in on either a 2500 or a 4000.

Does any one know of a reference where I can find out more about using
the aux port as
another port rather than as a terminal port? The location of a specimen
configuration would be appreciated.

Thanks

George, congrats on your new CCNP, great job!
I got certified back on April 7, and still haven't received my CCNP

So, I went on to the galton website to check it out, only to find out that
the package
was mail just on June 1.
Would that free CID training CD be included in it? I am looking forward to

Re: Router/Firewall

2000-06-05 Thread Tim O'Brien

You will need the firewall IOS feature set for the 1750. You will probably
also want to bump up the memory on the 1750. The IOS firewall feature set is
very nice and should be able to do everything that you will need.

Tim

try Cisco part # CD17-CH-12.0.5= (require a minimum of 4MB flash and 16MB
DRAM memory)

Hello All,

I have a client who wants to split his T1 between voice and data. 12 lines
of data and 12 lines of voice. The split will be done by an Adtran DSU/CSU.
They want to then use a Cisco router for the Internet connection, however
they need to have firewall capabilities. They were told by someone to use
the Cisco 1750. Does anyone know about this router, does it have firewall
capabilities, are they good enough or should they get another firewall
besides the router. Also is this a good router for their purposes (70 user

Re: VLAN Trunk traffic question

2000-06-05 Thread Kenny Sallee

Actually, in a production network with many vlans, I think there will be
more traffic on the trunks. If one port is a trunk and it has 5 vlans
configured, a broadcast from all vlans will traverse the trunk - so if all
vlan's broadcast at the same time, instead of 1 broadcast - as most ports
will see - the trunk will see 5.

As far as traffic passing the trunk where it is not destined for a user on
that trunk...Only broadcasts, multicasts, and unicasts destined for a real
user will traverse the trunk. So a unicast to a user off swich C will not
be seen by switch B. On switch A, if you do a "sh cam dynamic" you will see
MAC address mappings to the trunk port interface of users off switch C.

If you start talking about multiple VLANs then you can look at VTP prunning.
If setup properly, it will only send traffic on a trunk if there is a
particluar VLAN configured on a switch off that trunk. In your scenario,
say you have 3 VLANs. VLAN 1 is configured on all 3 switches. VLAN 2 is
only on switch C and A. VLAN 3 is only on Switch B and A. Switches B and C
are trunking to switch A. Switch A has user ports in all 3 VLANs. A
broadcast from a port on switch A in VLAN 2 will not traverse the trunk to
switch B, because there are no user ports in that VLAN anyway. Makes sense
huh?

hey guys and gals,

Well, passed my CCNA this morning. Showed up at the testing center and
my
internet registration hadn't gone through, and I was all pumped for the
exam, so I had to do some running around to get re-registered, but
that's
another story. The exam itself I found surprisingly easy, compared with
the
depth with which I studied a lot of the material. I think I was making
the
test out to be worse than it was. I had 78 questions, and they were a
pretty good spread. I had almost no questions on routing protocols.
The
test was probably strongest on OSI layers, bridging and switching, with
subnetting ranking up there too. But no one area was extremely
difficult.
Anyway, I'm fairly new to this study group and haven't posted much, but
I
definitely appreciate the help and encouragement I've gotten. Guess I'm
on
to the ACRC exam.

Speaking of which, can anyone suggest some good reading/study material
for
that exam?

Thanks again, looking forward to all the exams to follow.

between just those two VLANs.  Also just a side note.  The mls rp ip

The exam doesn't cover specifics about any of hardware. You just need to
know what device you should use at what layer (Core, Distribution, or
Access) in a given situation.

Isolation

2000-06-05 Thread Michael Linehan

Although this group is great for collabarating...I feel the need for
some human interaction. My current job environment entails me as the
only network proffessional on staff. Is any member of the list a current
member of the NPA? If so, what do they think? Is this worth the $175.00
per year? Are there any other options in the Twin Cites (Minnesota)
area??

Also I have a philosophical question. Would it be better to find a
position that peripherally allows some Cisco WAN experience before
embarking on CCNP/CCIE? I have my CCNA. Or should one just go for it
anyway?

Passed CIT and now a CCNP

2000-06-05 Thread George Zhang

I passed CIT 4.0 today with a score of 834. It is my last test for
CCNP. I finished in about 90 minutes and had about 15 minutes to
review. The most difficult part of CIT, for me, is the ambiguity of the
questions. Another thing is that you have to guess what Cisco wants you
to answer. Without knowing how the score is calculated based on the
number of right/wrong answers, I had no idea if I passed or failed just
before I saw the "Congratulation". Overall, my test was in line with
previous posts regarding CIT.

Here is my road to CCNP:

ACRC: 12/22/99
CMTD: 2/7/00
CLSC: 5/1/00
CIT: 6/5/

I would like to take this opportunity to thank every one in this group,
especially those who have answered my questions and or communicated with
me directly. Knowing that many people are working towards CCNA, CCDA,
CCNP, CCDP, and CCIE has been a good motivation factor for me. Thank
you all.

I don't know if I want to get CCDA and CCDP before I go for CCIE.
I like to hear your opinions about the value of CCDA and CCDP. How much
can you learn by studying for CCDA and CCDP? How are they recognized in
the networking community? Your opinions are greatly appreciated.

George Zhang, CCNP

VLAN problems with Catalyst 3548G

2000-06-05 Thread Lance Hubbard

Got a new toy to play with...a Cat 3548G. Problem is, that while creating a
new VLAN (in this case I chose "VLAN 100"), The VLAN interface seems to have
a love affair with the shutdown/Administratively down state. Anyone had
similar hurdles to clear? (besides the obvious "no shutdown", it is
ineffective)

Cheers,

Lance

Re: VLANs and SC0!

2000-06-05 Thread Kenny Sallee

I've moved sc0 from vlan1 several times. There should be no reason you
can't. Here's how our lab switch is setup now and working fine:

set interface sc0 15 192.168.168.251 255.255.255.0 192.168.168.255

I would suspect an IP addressing/subnet mask or a configuration problem
here. Also, since it's only one switch, why not set VTP to transparent?

BCMSN hardware question

2000-06-05 Thread Steve Kalman

Hi Folks,

I'm interested in taking BCMSN. Before plunking down $2500US, I was
wondering if anyone could answer a few questions about the course?

What hardware is present? The sales rep at one training company said that
all students have 1900s and 5500s. Another said that the course has those
switches. (Quite a difference!) Another sales rep listed four model number
series (1900, 2600, 5500 and 2500). I assume that a router would be helpful,
but both 2500 and 2600? Still another sales person said that there would be
internal routers (RSM, I presume) and ISLs (inter switch links, probably)
and Supervisors (Sup III, I'd hope) but the salesperson had no idea what
those acronyms meant.

Has anyone gone to this course (better yet, taught it)? Can you advise on
the hands on component?

Thanks,

Steve

I believe 802.1s is the standards group working
on Spanning Forest (per vlan stp)

have been having (semi) argument at work about
dot1q versus ISL

my understanding is that dot 1q runs one
instance of spanning tree per trunk, rather than per vlan as ISL does -
hence if one VLAN is blocking then dot1q disables the entire
trunk

A collegue of mine reckons that dot 1q now does
as per ISL and runs STP on a per-vlan basis, but the 802.1q spec has changed
without the # changing

someone help me out here...

thanks

Andy

Re: Frame Relay on back-to-back routers (without FR switches)

2000-06-05 Thread quezada

I want to know if we can run Frame Relay between two
routers back to back without FR switches ?
yes you can
you probably would want a frame relay switch to practice hub and spoke
and other nice things ;but you can run frame realy over a back to back
connection

You need a FR switch in between them, most Cisco routers can be config'ed to
act as FR switches. Search the list, there are many posts on how to do this.
