NEXT_HOP attribute for BGP and IP routing table entry?
Hi All, Quick question about the NEXT_HOP attribute used in the BGP protocol... If the UPDATE packet cross EBGP link, the NEXT_HOP will be the IP address of source BGP speaker from AS. This will not change with in the AS. All BGP tablesin AS will have the same NEXT_HOP IP - but what will be used in the IP routing table. BGP first check if route to NEXT_HOP is in the local IP routing table.(sync enabled, ext..) Then what? Does it first look what the next hop ip address is in the IP routing table and use this IP for the routing table entry, OR does it add the IP routing table entry with the SAME NEXT_HOP attribute IP as all the BGP speakers in the AS have? Both make sense, but not sure which one will be used... it has to do a recursive lookup anyway! RE: ROUTING 2.0
Hi all, I took the routing exam Monday and failed by 60 points. What I did wrong is study BGP and not worry about OSPF and EIGRP. The exam outline is what you will see on the exam, if you feel comfortable with the outline, you will do ok. Decnet routing with using HSRP
Hi, My company is using Cisco 2501 and 2621 routers. We are using DECNET and TCP/IP protocols. Before that, I know that when the router is enable DECNET routing, it cannot implement HSRP. However, somebody told me that a new verison IOS can do that. Is that true? If true, where can I find this information? LS100, Fore ATM NIC, W2K, C5K
Anyone tried getting an ATM NIC on Windows 2000 to work with an Lightstream 100 and Catalyst 5000 LANE blade? I suspect Microsoft's lack of backward compatibility in their Windows 2000 ATM implementation is preventing this setup from working. I'm using a Marconi Forerunner LE 155 adapter. >From what I can find, the LS100 only supports UNI 3.0 and the help files in W2K says Microsoft's implementation is UNI 3.1. I tried using both auto-configured LECS address from the LS100 and using the well known LECS address (5155 on Cat 5000 being the LECS, LES/BUS, 12.0(9) something code). If anyone out there has any experience with ATM NICs and Windows 2000 talking to Cisco equipment, let us know your experiences. Meantime - gotta yank the card out and get it into my other test machine with NT4 (I know the Marconi drivers for NT4 has a UNI 3.0/3.1 selection option). Couldn't get my 3Com 3C339 Token Ring PCI card to work with W2K either - no drivers. P/S - It sure feels like Token Ring is dying - with the slowly dwindling supply of decently supported NICs for it. I have simulated the network links and policies in the lab to protect this bandwidth but would like to draw further feedback to identify any other potential problem. Again, discussed in some detail in the new paper. Iin this case, since the gateways are transoceanic, without redistributing BGP into IGP, it would appear that it is difficult to select the best exit using IGP. Re: load balancing on Rip
CEF switching allows you to control the type of load sharing on a per interface basis -- with the ip load-sharing command -- see below To enable load balancing for Cisco Express Forwarding (CEF), use the ip load-sharing interface configuration command. To disable load balancing for CEF, use the no form of this command. ip load-sharing [per-packet] [per-destination] no ip cef [per-packet] Syntax Description per-packet (Optional) Enables per-packet load balancing on the interface. per-destination (Optional) Enables per-destination load balancing on the interface. Default Per-destination load balancing is enabled by default when you enable CEF. Atif Awan wrote: > you do not need any commands to setup load balancing. OK, as much as I always previously loathed all the people who would post regarding passing the CCxx test, I now find myself in the position to do so (I think now that I was probably just jealous). I took and passed the CCNA 2.0 test today with a 903. My only complaint was that I had to answer several questions after the test (NDA & are you over 18..etc..)before I could see my results. My thanks to all the list members who post here and share their valuable time to help us all get thru these tests and on with our careers. Anyway, time to take a night off from studying and then start finishing off my mcse (2 tests left!), then maybe a little Linux or Win2k or CCDA? Re: load balancing on Rip
The router is probably fast-switching. Which means it is load balancing on a per-destination basis. All of your traceroutes are for the same destination, so they are going the same route. On the serial interface, if it is T1 or slower, do a "no ip route-cache" That will turn off fast-switching, and make the router process switch the packets. It is then supposed to load balance on a per-packet basis instead of a per-destination. > >The admin distance is 120, hop count is 2 for two entries to the same >network yet when I do a traceroute it only traces through the first entry >Duck >- Original Message - >From: Brian <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> >To: Donald B Johnson Jr <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> >Cc: Atif Awan <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>; Agnelo D'souza <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>; ><[EMAIL PROTECTED]> >Sent: Monday, August 28, 2000 8:58 AM >Subject: Re: load balancing on Rip > > > > On Mon, 28 Aug 2000, Donald B Johnson Jr wrote: > > > > > How come when I do a traceroute it only shows that one path is being >used. > > > Thanks > > > Duck > > > > show us the route table output,then show us the traceroute. > > > > Brian > > > > > > > - Original Message - > > > From: Brian <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > > > To: Donald B Johnson Jr <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > > > Cc: Atif Awan <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>; Agnelo D'souza ><[EMAIL PROTECTED]>; > > > <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > > > Sent: Monday, August 28, 2000 8:28 AM > > > Subject: Re: load balancing on Rip > > > > > > > > > > On Mon, 28 Aug 2000, Donald B Johnson Jr wrote: > > > > > > > > > Could You show me the commands to load balance RIP please. Re: BGP Multi-Homing
Adding on to the question... 1) If a /24 is not acceptable, does the acceptable range start at /21 or /23 or? Here is what I believe is doable - but you need your providers to co-operate along:- 1) Get a /? from your provider, ensure they allow you to advertise a more specific route for the portion of their address space assigned to you. Then re-advertise this to your other providers (from what Howard say, it can't be a /24 so I'm wondering what's the minimum as per question above). You will need your own ASN. 2) Use a single provider, multi-homed BGP, and advertise the specific networks with the no-export community. Your provider will learn multiple routes to you via BGP but will not re-advertise them. Since you are using a portion of your provider's address space, it is already being advertised as a larger aggregate route so the rest of the Internet knows how to route to you via your provider. You can use private ASN space (get a private ASN number from your provider) for this. The 2nd option would alleviate the headaches of trying to get your own addresses and ASN but limits you to one provider. Any thoughts? As a first cut, I would place an access list on the router that allows established connections DMZ -> outside and also allows inbound connections to those ports on those servers you have in the DMZ. You'll also likely need to allow UDP port 53 for DNS. Will one of the DMZ servers be a name server? If so, will it be authoritative for any zones, and need to do zone transfers to a secondary (TCP 53)? With a deny any any log at the end of the router access list you can see what holes you need to open if things aren't working as planned. The PIX will by default allow connections originated on the inside to connect to the outside, so the configuration should be minimal there unless you're either denying certain types of traffic originated inside, or plan to allow static mappings and certain traffic originating from DMZ or internet to reach hosts on the inside network. There's no reason not to deny unwanted and/or malicious traffic both at the router and at the PIX. More security. If a host in the DMZ gets compromised, it's nice to have another defense for the inside. The biggest problems with this type of setup are customer related, not configuration or hardware. You design a secure network and then someone demands the ability to use PCAnywhere to get to his inside workstation or worse yet hangs a modem on it. Insist on IPSEC/VPN for such idiocy if at all possible. -- Jay Hennigan - Network Administration - [EMAIL PROTECTED] NetLojix Communications, Inc. Actually IPv6 started back in 91 or 92 if I'm not mistaken. BGP Multi-Homing
Does anyone know where I can find good whitepapers or configuration examples of BGP in multi-homed environments? ARIN won't give out anything less than a /21, but some providers won't advertise networks unless the IPs belong to you. Just another situation where politics are as much of a part of an engineer's job as everything else. Good thing we have VPs to slam providers Level 3 I've checked the archives and read recent posts by Howard Berkowitz (looking forward to the whitepaper on Sept. 1st). Any other ideas??? This paragraph from Howard basically sums up what I'm discovering: Depends on the policy of the particular ISP, even tier 1. Some simply don't want to advertise any /24 that's not part of their address space, some won't do it except for direct customers who have negotiated to advertise provider-independent address space, some might not be willing to negotiate to advertise an a more-specific assignment of another provider's space, and some don't care. ___ UPDATED Posting Guidelines: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/guide.html FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

PIX configuration
My network is as follows: Ethernet Segment ---|PIX||RTR|--OUT TO INTERNET INTERNAL DMZ EXTERNAL I have a few servers out in the DMZ zone. How and what is the standard for security configuration for the PIX and the RTR (router). Is the RTR suppose to shield only the servers in the DMZ and allow all other access inside? Is the PIX suppose to be configured such that any traffic from the Ethernet Segment on the INTERNAL network going through the INTERNET is filtered and allowed via the OUTBOUND list on the PIX. How about the conduit? How is that suppose to be used. I have the network pretty much setup, but wanted some suggestions as to if I'm doing it right. I'm currently using the RTR to protect the servers in the DMZ as well as placing some security for inbound connections while using the PIX to establish/filter what traffic can go outbound and what can't. How about traffic coming inbound from the INTERNET, should that type of traffic be filtered on the RTR or by using the conduit on the PIX. Any help with how to setup security at what section of the network (where) would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. _ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. So then i placed the ethernet module in the same slot the WAN module was in to make sure that slot works and it does. So then I took the 2 WAN cards out of the module and put them in 2 spare 2600's we have to make sure that they work, and they do. So this leaves me with this question. FW: Video conferencing over IP question
I am putting together a IP/VC solution for 1500 users at 2 sites right now. How many users do you have at the sites, then you can estimate bandwitch requirements. From Cisco's webpage, you will need the 3660 (or others) to run Multimedia Conference Manager, one at each site. Yes, you can use Dlsw for this. We have almost 200 ATM machines in our network and we use DLSw+ for connectivity back to our mainframe. Check CCO for examples. We currently run 3 ISDN lines into each office for video conferencing and the phone bills are quite expensive. We are looking into running video conferencing over the Frame network and my question concerns what switch I should install in the offices. Right now I am looking at the 3548 XL at two of the main offices with 2924 XL switches for the rest of the offices. If video conferencing over IP becomes a reality in 6 months I was thinking about adding a 5000 series switch at the main site to have a core/distribution layer with the 3548 XLs serving as the access layer. RE: ATM Dead? Was: 350-001 examin very tough
I recently took the CATM class and we had some discussion over whether ATM was dead or not The consensus was this: ATM has been passed out by a combination of Fast Ethernet, Gig Ethernet and soon 10-Gig Ethernet - some of the newer features in IOS add the QOS factor. However, someone forgot to tell the Telco's / Service Providers. ATM is a big big big part of their networks and will continue to be for a long time into the future. Also, a couple of Cisco's high end routers use an ATM backbone - so an understanding of ATM is necessary. Also, understanding how ATM works helps you understand how carriers provision Frame Relay - so again ATM knowledge is good. Also, since the earlier post mentioned Token Ring, let me take a stab at that too. I hate Token Ring. Not dislike - but HATE. I've always hated it - with a passion ! But as long as people have mainframes and SNA traffic and other legacy IBM devices then Token Ring will play an important part in enterprise networks. Therefore a thorugh knowledge of Token Ring will be required into the future. Just my 2 cents. RE: ATM Dead?
Tough question. Currently, ATM is the predominant control protocol in service provider networks, but that is starting to change. The complexity of managing IP-over-ATM overlay networks, as well as the loss of efficiency due to the ATM cell-tax (especially on high-speed links) is causing many service providers to begin to migrate ATM control planes to MPLS. Using MPLS, service providers can provision "ATM-like" services, but they can do it over a variety of layer 2 protocols such as Frame Relay, Ethernet, PPP, or ATM cells. If you look at Marconi (formerly FORE), arguably the leader in ATM products, they are already working on migrating their products to support MPLS. Another item worth noting, none of the major hardware vendors that I know of have plans to produce ATM-to-packet interfaces at speeds of OC-48 or above, effectively killing ATM in the network core. From what I've read, the cost and complexity of designing the SAR process outweighs any benefit. I believe that ATM will be around for a long while (heck, X.25 is still around). I believe that most service providers will begin to migrate data traffic to MPLS control planes by converting their ATM switches to become label switch routers. ATM will still be used to provide CBR services for things like voice and video, with ATM switches handling both ATM and MPLS in "ships in the night" mode. Over time, and as MPLS-QoS services mature, the ATM control plane will be fully replaced by MPLS. Once that happens, service providers can begin to phase out ATM cells at Layer 2, replacing them with variable length packets over PPP or Ethernet. Where ATM continues to thrive is in relatively low speed services such as DSL. Most DSL connections still use ATM framing, and probably will for a good long while. So, is a 3 year Masters program in ATM worthwhile? Sure, your friend is planning on going to work within service provider networks, and he gets some exposure to MPLS. Just my .02. Yes, the primary unit will failover, though it may take up to a minute. There's a bug in many versions that causes the failover process to take much longer (10 minutes) if you're using a syslog server. They fixed it by turning off syslogging of the failover process! Not a problem, since I have the OS diskette. I didn't need to do the recovery, I was seeking the general knowledge around it. Here is another question though. When you have 2 firewalls and they are setup for redundancy, ( forgive my ignorance if I'm using the incorrect terms and feel free to correct me. ) and one fails, does the other automatically step in, or how does that work? Cable Modem problems
I have a cable provider that has major problems all the time. The problem is that they occasionally loose the network connectivity. They always have us reinitialize the cable modem and get assigned an ip address and gateway address. Everything works for about 2 minutes and then we have to do it all again. The tail fin 3com modem show proper lights. However, I can ping my own address but no longer the gateway everytime. I then have to reinitialize (restart) the cable modem and release/renew my dhcp address to get it working again. Anyone have a clue. why this is. Re: ATM Dead?
ATM is hardly a dead technology at this stage in the game. Though we're not really seeing it to the desktop and LANE implementations aren't the hottest thing, it's an incredible technology in the backbone. Providers love it because it allows us to run anything and everything over it (from voice to IP, and everything in between) and maintain quality of service. One backbone carrying everything. So ignore ATM at your own risk, because it's going to be with us for quite some time. Kris, From: John Neiberger <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: ATM Dead? Was: 350-001 examin very tough But is ATM really dead? Sure, not too many people will be introducing new implementations of LANE, but it seems to me that ATM over the WAN is still fairly common. We will be using some ATM in the near future, as a matter of fact. We are implementing alternate backup routes to all of our main branches using DSL. Our provider is muxing all DSL lines to an ATM connection back to our HQ. Pretty cool, actually. John > Chuck, > > I think I'll be joining you about the same time > (350-001) . Video conferencing over IP question
We are building a Frame Relay network from scratch. We have 2 main offices and around 8 remote offices. For equipment the four main offices will have 3640s and the 4 remote offices will have 2620s. Two of the main offices will 100 + users while the other two will have 25 + users. The remaining remote offices will have 5-10 users. I am concerned about the 2924 XLs in the four remote offices. Should I look into the 3524 XL series for the remote offices to be able to handle the video conferencing traffic? RE: Access-List filter & NT login
Brian/All: Oops, sorry Brian. That second line was not there in the test access-list. The first line was the only line there. I have since performed additional test. Here are the results: Recap: > > Network A = 222.9.241.0 (network connecting to outside) > > Network B = 222.9.242.0 > > Router Interface 0/0 = 222.9.241.15 > > Router Interface 0/1 = 222.9.242.15 > > ip access-list extended Test > > permit tcp any 222.9.242.0 0.0.0.255 established > > ip access-group Test in (to router interface 0/0) Objective: Network B able to surf the web. With only the above permit, I put a protocol-analyzer on the interface. I notice that dns query UDP 53 is not being replied. so I added the following statements and the log show: permit tcp any 222.9.242.0 0.0.0.255 established (205 matches) permit tcp any any eq domain permit udp any any eq domain permit tcp any any eq echo (just for test) permit udp any any eq echo (just for test) permit tcp any any eq whois (just for test) permit udp any any eq rip (250 matches) (just for test) permit tcp any any eq hostname (just for test) permit udp any any eq who (just for test) permit tcp any any (just for test) Still the test machine cannot access the web. So I added permit ip any any Then the test machine can access the web. The protocol analyzer shows that the dns query UDP received a reply from the outside. the hits shows up in the permit ip any any. The problem seems to be in the dns query UDP reply. I thought the permit tcp&udp any any eq domain would take care of the problem but it didn't. Any help would be appreciated. Hi, Cisco Buddies: Does anyone know anything about the OPSE(Open Programmable Swithing Engineer) test for Cisco Voice partner? My company asked us to take the test, I figured out it's good for me and my company anyways, and it probably wouldn't take much of my time beofre my CCIE Lab date. My questions are as below: 1)What Material is BEST for preparing for the test? Any one has official course material want to trade with me for other good stuffs(CCIE written , CVoice, CIM...)? 2)Is there any URL in CCO where I can get the OPSE study materials? I have partner access to CCO. Any comments and suggestions will be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks in advance! Also keep into consideration the switching process configured on the router. Intstead of doing a traceroute why dont you ping the destination and observe the route the packets take. RE: Pix Firewall Password Recovery
Title: Pix Firewall Password Recovery I have done the PIX password recovery per CCO and can confirm that it does indeed work as stated. The only "gotcha" I can think would be a problem is knowing the correct PIX OS version running on the box. RE: 350-001 examin very tough
Title: RE: 350-001 examin very tough I concur on the free training portion here. I attended free switching training, which helped me some with passing the Switching 2.0 exam and will attend a 3-day advanced routing class next week. I have already passed this test but extra FREE training never hurts, does it? All of the training in my area is taught by a "Channels" SE, who in my case is a seasoned CCIE. He is good as is the training. The story I get from him is that Cisco is permitted to teach a "portion" of what the training partners provide, but they don't want to teach it all as that would remove the need to have training partners in the first place. This way, we (supposedly resellers) can get some free training on the complex stuff and fill in the blanks via other means, like books and CCO. Re: Good question involving EIGRP & ISDN
Your traffic continues to use the BRI because of the IP fast-switching cache that is enabled by default in IOS. On your BRI interfaces, do this: int bri x/x no ip route-cache You can also use the "backup interface" command on the serial interfaces instead of floating static routes as you have currently setup. The IP route-cache can be cleared manually:- clear ip cache Note - I believe the route-cache should only be disabled on the BRI interfaces in this case... can anyone confirm this? RE: Higher than CCIE...
I havn't found the start of this thread, so I hope you don't mind me interrupting here. I think I would be tempted to get one CCIE cert first and then re-evaluate your position. From a marketing angle I don't think you'll generate many more $$$/hour having all five than just holding one CCIE cert. Even holding one cert will give you the respect of your peers. If its knowledge you crave, then study for life and you'll probably feel less anxious about proving how good you are through pieces of paper. I tend to use my bits of paper when I feel that I need to which is generally once a year when I'm looking for a contract. Good Luck and keep watching the skies Phil. --- "Howard C. Re: Minimum BGP Address Aggregation
If you are still thinking in terms of class C and half class C, you are not ready to plan BGP multihoming. You _must_ start thinking in CIDR terms. >I was told by an ISP that the minimum address aggregation acceptable on the >Internet is a single class C address space. Is this correct? No, it is not. It is the minimum allocation of provider-independent space by registries. A /24, however, may NOT be globally routable. It doesn't sound like your provider understands multihoming. >This would >limit companies that do not require a vast amount of IP address to do any >failover. Load balancing and primary/backup are quite different. What is the problem you are trying to solve? Do you have routers that can take a full Internet routing table (85,000 or so routes), or do you need a strategy that reduces the number of routes? ATM Dead? Was: 350-001 examin very tough
But is ATM really dead? Sure, not too many people will be introducing new implementations of LANE, but it seems to me that ATM over the WAN is still fairly common. We will be using some ATM in the near future, as a matter of fact. We are implementing alternate backup routes to all of our main branches using DSL. Our provider is muxing all DSL lines to an ATM connection back to our HQ. Pretty cool, actually. John > Chuck, > > I think I'll be joining you about the same time > (350-001) . RE: 350-001 examin very tough
Chuck, I think I'll be joining you about the same time (350-001) . But boy do I hate ATM & Token Ring. So boring learning this stuff, when in the back of my mind I consider it dead technology. The only way I can keep my sanity is by planning to rip as much of this crap out as I can and replace it with Giga technology etc before I escape to do something more interesting. Regards, and good luck for the written. Keep watching the skies .. Phil. --- Chuck Larrieu <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Stefan, sorry to hear the bad news. Minimum BGP Address Aggregation
I was told by an ISP that the minimum address aggregation acceptable on the Internet is a single class C address space. Is this correct? This would limit companies that do not require a vast amount of IP address to do any failover. I have a full class C w/ one provider and a half class C (x.x.x.128-254) w/ another provider and would like to do a multi-home load balancing or a primary / backup configuration w/ BGP. Anyone out there been up against this one? CIM for CCIE
Hey guys, Does anyone out there in groupstudy land know how effective are the new CIM expert labs are in preparation for the CCIE labs? Also, I have been trying to find out if for example, a five user CIM kit includes 5 of the same course or different courses in the same kit, because a few of my buddies are considering pooling together to buy these CIM labs. Anyone, feel free jump in with their 411?
