 WIC-2T $ 450.00

2002-01-30 Thread McCallum, Robert

Come on mate where's your sense of humour.

BTW Jason is right the mouse new it was in for a hard time when it saw me so
it bolted.

As for Brussels you do not see any equipment, you are just sat in a
classroom with keyboard, monitor, mouse (sometimes), pens, pencils,
sharpener , rubber (eraser for the Americans) and paper. You can wander off
at any time to get yourself a "free" can of coke or tea / coffee. I would
advise this
as you may as well bloat yourself with liquid as the lunch is a buffet
selection of continental type rolls. For us Brits sweet rolls with some
form of strange meat on them doesn't really appeal, in fact they were quite
rancid. I couldn't find a decent roll despite my 6 times of trying. Next
time
I'm going to bring in a packed lunch, with a Capri Sun just for luck.

Rock,

If you have intf s0 to ISP1(desired) and intf s1 to ISP2,
I would try
"Set int s0 s1" after the match clause.
If s0 is up-up, it uses ISP1, if it goes down then it uses s1 (ISP2). At
least is should be so...

Subject: Route map [7:33429]

Hi group,

I would like to define a route-map on a router to forward certain packets
(defined by the ACL 101) to 2 different next-hop address. I use 2 next-hop
addresses to avoid the single point of failure. The 2 next-hop addresses are
directly attached to the router.

The first next-hop address 10.10.10.10, the primary gateway, would be used
to forward all packet maching ACL 101. If the primary went down then the
second next-hop 11.11.11.11, the backup, would be used to forward all
packets maching ACL 101.

Would the following route-map do as I want?

route-map test permit 10
match ip address 101
set ip next-hop 10.10.10.10
set ip next-hop 11.11.11.11

access-list 101 permit ip any host 10.10.12.12

Any information is welcome.
Thank you all.

Cisco Router Integration with Ace Server for SecurID [7:33671]

2002-01-30 Thread imran obaidullah

hi,

I have cisco 2621 with IOS (Firewall, Plus features and 56-bit IPSec
encryption) feature set. I have client to site VPN established by the remote
users with this VPN router. The users should have an external authentication
using secure id.

I tried configuring the ace server to work as an radius server and
integrating directly with checkpoint firewall and this setup works fine

I want to integrate the same ace server to work with the above router. I had
added the normal aaa commands but the users are not asked for any
authentication and they can access the local network after establishng the
VPN.

Can anyone give me sample config on intergrating the radius server with the
router.

RE: term no mon command [7:33658]

2002-01-30 Thread Baety Wayne A1C 18 CS/SCBX

There are 4 places logging information is sent; via the monitor, the
console, SNMP, and a buffer. Each logging destination can be likened to 4
different views. In each view you can control the amount or severity of the
logging information (debug, informational, notification, warn, errors,
alerts, critical, emergencies). When you enable a view to have a certain
logging level, it enables all higher logging level messages as well to be
outputted to the view.

When you plug a terminal into the console port with an async cable this is
called the console view (line con 0). The command 'logging console '
controls the severity of logging information sent to the console. You can
totally disable all logging to the console with the command 'no logging
console'.

When you telnet to an active interface on the router this is called the
monitor view (line vty 0 4 and line aux 0). The command 'logging monitor
' controls the severity of logging information sent to the monitor. By
default, you need to type 'terminal monitor' to actually activate this view
when you telnet. You can totally disable all logging to the monitor with the
command 'no logging monitor'.

When you configure the router to output logging information to a syslog
server with 'logging ' this is called the buffered view. The
command 'logging trap ' controls the severity of logging information sent
to the buffer. You can totally disable all logging to the console with the
command 'no logging trap'.

When you configure the router to output logging information to a SNMP
network management station with 'snmp-server host '
this is called the SNMP view. The command 'logging history ' controls
the severity of logging information sent via SNMP. You can totally disable
all logging via SNMP with the command 'no logging history '. Note: For
the SNMP view you must explicitly disallow the logging severity level.

If you need more information on the use of all of the logging levels and
what information is actually printed at each level take a look at the
troubleshooting commands guide

very extensive explaination. and one more doubt is for the buffered view,
having 'logging traps' command to control the size and severity level, but
what the command 'logging buffer' and 'command logging facility' used for?

If you have CDP information from the two upstream routers, you could write
a route-map using the 'verify-availability' command. Take a look at the
following example and URL:

route-map MOVE-STUFF permit 10
 match ip address 101
 set ip next-hop 192.168.0.1
 set ip next-hop verify-availability

route-map MOVE-STUFF permit 20
 match ip address 101
 set ip next-hop 192.168.1.1

http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/software/ios121/121cgcr/switch_c/xcprt3/xcdnfc.htm

I have no idea if this works, I just noticed it fiddling with next-hops
last week.

Re: Router doesn't hold Enable Passwrod [7:33645]

2002-01-30 Thread David L. Blair

Do you have an Enable Secret password set? The Enable password is mainly
still around for support of older IOS code. Cisco is trying to move
everyone to using Enable Secret.

Have you tried typing out the full command: enable password password?

What is your configuration register set to 0x2102 or 0x2142? If is set to
0x2142, the router will ignore the startup-config which contains the Enable
and Enable Secret passwords.

If that does not fix the problem, I am out of ideas.

Cisco Router Integration with Ace Server for SecurID [7:33681]

2002-01-30 Thread imran obaidullah

hi,

I have cisco 2621 with IOS (Firewall, Plus features and 56-bit IPSec
encryption) feature set. I have client to site VPN established by the remote
users with this VPN router. The users should have an external authentication
using secure id.

I tried configuring the ace server to work as an radius server and
integrating directly with checkpoint firewall and this setup works fine

I want to integrate the same ace server to work with the above router. I had
added the normal aaa commands but the users are not asked for any
authentication and they can freely access the local network after
establishng the VPN.

Can anyone give me sample config on intergrating the radius server with the
router.

With Best Regards

Cisco Security Advisory: Cisco CatOS Telnet Buffer Vulnerability

Revision 1.0

For Public Release 2002 January 29 at 1500 UTC

- -
---

Summary
- - ---
Some Cisco Catalyst switches, running certain CatOS based software releases,
have a vulnerability wherein a buffer overflow in the telnet option handling
can cause the telnet daemon to crash and result in a switch reload. This
vulnerability can be exploited to initiate a denial of service (DoS) attack.

This vulnerability is documented as Cisco bug ID CSCdw19195. There are
workarounds available to mitigate the vulnerability.

This advisory will be posted at http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/707/
catos-telrcv-vuln-pub.shtml .

Affected Products
- - -
Cisco's various Catalyst family of switches run CatOS-based releases or
IOS-based releases. IOS-based releases are not vulnerable.

The following Cisco Catalyst Switches are vulnerable :

  * Catalyst 6000 series
  * Catalyst 5000 series
  * Catalyst 4000 series
  * Catalyst 2948G
  * Catalyst 2900

For the switches above, the following CatOS based switch software revisions
are
vulnerable.

vulnerability.

Details
- - ---
Some Cisco Catalyst switches, running certain CatOS-based software releases,
have a vulnerability wherein a buffer overflow in the telnet option handling
can cause the telnet daemon to crash and result in a switch reload. This
vulnerability can be exploited to initiate a denial of service (DoS) attack.
Once the switch has reloaded, it is still vulnerable and the attack can be
repeated as long as the switch is IP reachable on port 23 and has not been
upgraded to a fixed version of CatOS switch software.

This vulnerability is documented as Cisco bug ID CSCdw19195, which requires
a
CCO account to view and can be viewed after 2002 January 30 at 1500 UTC.

Impact
- - --
This vulnerability can be exploited to produce a denial of service (DoS)
attack. When the vulnerability is exploited it can cause the Cisco Catalyst
switch to crash and reload.

Software Versions and Fixes
- - ---
This vulnerability has been fixed in the following switch software revisions
and the fix will be carried forward in all future releases.

Try specifying the exact IP address of the PC from where you want to
initiate the Telnet session and not the block of IP.

RE: BGP and one backup link [7:33433]

2002-01-30 Thread Ian Henderson

Some ISPs can be evil and ignore path stuffing for customers - happens
here in .au a lot. One way I've found around it that works very well is
BGP Conditional Advertisement.

Basically it can 'see' if a route is in the routing table, and if it
isn't, advertise more routes. So, if you stop seeing the default route
from your usual provider, you can advertise your netblocks (specified by
an ACL or a prefix-list) to a second provider.

Outgoing traffic could be left to the floating static, or use the same
method to advertise a default route to your customer routers/cores/whatever.

Reasons I like it: Works across multiple routers; works even if the
physical interface is up (floating statics wont, backup interfaces won't);
can be easily 'swung' by shutting down BGP sessions without shutting
physical interfaces; is a much cleaner solution than path stuffing
(SOMEBODY out there has a longer path than you do :)).

Take a look at:
http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/459/cond_adv.html

Re: Telnet to inside through VPN [7:33589]

2002-01-30 Thread ipguru1

You can telnet to the outside of a pix. You have to use ipsec to do it, but
it can be
done as of 5.0

I am sure this is going to wrap, but this is how you do it with 5.1

Re: PIX % DNS Doctoring [7:33331]

2002-01-30 Thread Godswill HO

Hi,

Check your dns doctoring alias command:
alias (inside) 200.219.100.30 10.128.128.30 255.255.255.255

The order above is wrong. I assume the assigned address to the dns server is
10.128.128.30 and 200.219.100.30 is only a globally translated address. The
correct order should have been:

alis (inside) 10.128.128.30 200.219.100.30 255.255.255.255
This command will try to initiate the dns dosctoring from the inside client
and replace all dns response having 200.219.100.30 with 10.128.128.30 and
not the other way round as you initially had configured it.

Contact me again where necessary.

Regards.
Oletu

I am doing this exact thing right now for a customer and it works like a
charm here is a moc config for you without ip addresses of course.
See the config below and I made everything bold in reference to what
everyone is speaking about with cef. One thing I have noticed it is
supposed to be per packet but I am actually getting about 60/40% load
balancing over the links according to theinterface counters and the packets
going over each t1. That is one question that I have do you truly get
50/50 load balancing or is everyone else seeing this type of result with
load balancing also. I am using ospf on both routers.

Re: FW: [INFOCON] - UNIRAS Briefing - 23/02 - Cisco - CatOS [7:33684]

2002-01-30 Thread Tay Chee Yong

Hi,

Someone has any idea which CatOS for Cat6k is a stable release? I am
currently using Release 6.1(1d), and I need to upgrade it. I am also
looking at Release 7.1(1) with SSH support. Any advise from the experts out
there??
Thanks

Regards,
Cheeyong

Re: Internet Router? [7:33639]

2002-01-30 Thread nrf

But if all you're talking about is a branch router with 2 WAN links, do you
really need to carry full BGP routes? Is it really that important to get
optimum routing in this situation?

In fact, I even doubt that you need 64MB of RAM for your BGP. Just have
both ISP's hand you a default. Or perhaps a single BGP route from, say,
UUnet, and then recursively point your default to that route

ethernet errors explained [7:33687]

2002-01-30 Thread Patrick Donlon

Hi Everyone

I trying to find some information on some Ethernet errors that I see on a
port, see the text below. The machine is an RS6000 and was experiencing
some
performance problems, the NIC was set to auto negotiation and there were
the
usual errors. The port and NIC are now both fixed and the errors are
increasing steadily, I've had a good search on the CCO but I can't find any
explanation of what causes the errors, any advice will be appreciated

 Regards

 Patrick

If you are using nat friendly applications, then you could get an Ip from

What are you trying to do?

Gee, these look exactly like questions that I had on my Telephony
Fundamentals test; thus, answering the questions here would be a violation
of Cisco's NDA. Sorry.

But, if you do some searching on Cisco's pages, and the Internet in general,
you can find the answers, and the rational behind them.

RE: Internet Router? [7:33639]

2002-01-30 Thread Hire, Ejay

If all you need is two t-1's with no eye towards future scalability, then
just about any router will work (17xx+) the trick is you don't need to
accept full routes via BGP, Just accept the default routes.

Hello Everybody,

I just want to run this by everyone for their input from experience.

Scenario:
I'm looking for a Cisco router that will be providing Internet connectivity
running BGP and that will be able to handle the capacity of 2 PTP T1's to
the Internet. I know minimum RAM will have to be 64mbs for BGP routes. I
just want to know what people have tried that does and doesn't work.

My choice would be a 3640 for future T1 expandability and/or a HSSI port.

Thank you for the input.

Scott

You don't have an EIGRP problem, the routing protocol has nothing to
do with an interface being up or down. 12.0.8 is prey old, before
beating your head I would upgrade the IOS.

You appear to have the inline power module for ip phones. I had a
problem once on a server where I disabled the power on the port and this
resolved the errors.

OT: Cisco AVVID vs. 3Com [7:33705]

2002-01-30 Thread Stull, Cory

Does anyone have any working experience or good opinions on Cisco's IP
Telephony solution compared to 3Com? I'm trying to make a buying decision
and right now am very up in the air. 3Com has a nice and more cost
effective solution that even would allow me to (coming soon) be able to use
my existing legacy Lucent/Nortel phones with their NBX system. But 3Com
doesn't have IP to the phone yet and they seem to have some proprietary
voice over ethernet... Their inline power is also consisting of power patch
panels or the power coupler.. not pretty.

Any comments?

Thanks
Cory

Dave tried that one first as I thought it was the most interesting, but
sadly

(enable) set port inline 2/26 off
Feature not supported on module 2.

I'll go back to basics first Ole.

OSPF Startup questions [7:33711]

2002-01-30 Thread Cebuano

Hi, group.
I have a few questions to iron out regarding OSPF startup.

1. EXSTART - master/slave is created between each router and its adjacent
DR/BDR.
Q: But this "election" on who the master will be is mute because the
router with the higher RID (thus) the DR/BDR acts as the master, right? If
not, shouldn't the DR act as the master anyway since he ( or she) is the
central distribution point for the area's topology?

2. LOADING - slave router sends an LS request if the master's DBD has a more
up-to-date link-state entry.
Q: "up-to-date" meaning timestamps?? But...what if there's no NTP server
to synchronize them?

Thanks.
Elmer

RE: term no mon command [7:33658]

It may not be a good idea to turn everything off with "no logg cons". You
may want to limit the message rate or severity levels. Try:

"logg rate cons 10 all except crit" or "logg cons 3"

Re: css 11000 [7:33498]

2002-01-30 Thread Arinze Okafo

During a session, the CSS maintains an association between a client an a
server. The association is referred to as stickiness. Stickiness enables
transactions over the web when the client must remain on the same server for
the entire session. Depending on the content rule, the CSS sticks a client
to an appropriate server after the css has determined which load balancing
method to use.

Depending on the application, the site may require that the customer become
stuck to one server once the connection is established, or the application
may not require this until the customer starts to build a shopping cart.

The CSS can use a variety of methods to achieve stickiness depending on the
requirement of the application including:

Source IP address
Source IP address and destination port.
String found in a cookie or URL
SSL session ID

In my case I needed the client stuck as soon as they log on to the site..

snmp, 64bit interface counters, slightly OT but related [7:33719]

2002-01-30 Thread Herold Heiko

I'm experimenting with snmp. Ios 12.2(5) . Snmp configuration is simply

I'm trying to monitor some 64bit counters (ifHCInOctets ecc.) with mrtg,
but can't get the correct values, in fact mrtg complains

WARNING: Expected a number but got '#'

with a basic configuration like
Target[name.tst]: 1:community@host:2

Normal snmp v1 setup works for all the usual targets I tested
(interfaces, cpu, memory, ntp for now).

Trying to snmwalk those counters appareantly won't work either -

does produce everything except the 64bit counters.

But note,

ifMIB.ifMIBObjects.ifXTable.ifXEntry.ifName.1 = Fa0/0

while

snmpget -v 2c host community

1
ifMIB.ifMIBObjects.ifXTable.ifXEntry.ifHCInOctets.1 = No Such Instance
currently exists

This would have been ifHCInOctets for Fa0/0 . debug printed

 ifXEntry.6.1 = NO_SUCH_INSTANCE_EXCEPTION

so appareantly snmpget did not lie on me.

I see two possibilities:

a) my router config needs something else to enable v2 - but in that case
debug should at least complain for a v2c packets.

b) that basic mrtg conf needs something else or the version of mrtg I'm
using (2.9.17) is buggy, AND I'm using snmpwalk with a wrong syntax, too
(or it is buggy).

c) ?

Any idea at least if the problem is related to the router config or the
mrtg/snmpwalk setup ?

Heiko

RE: Cisco AVVID vs. 3Com [7:33705]

2002-01-30 Thread Bill Carter

My company is a Cisco Voice partner and a 3Com Voice Partner. The office I
work out of uses the 3Com NBX for about 20 phones. It works, no real
complaints. Some of the earlier versions of code were pretty bad.
Downsides, NBX has 1 hard drive, if it goes we are down. No way to backup.
3Com may be providing a new solution, I'm not sure???

Here is our position when selling to a customers. If they are a small
office (0-30 phones), with no need for VoIP connecting different offices,
3Com is probably the best choice. Cost is a lot less than Cisco solution
for same customer and customer wants basic features (voice-mail,
auto-attendant, call-park, call-transfer, speaker phone).

For customers with larger offices (40+ phones), the potential for VoIP with
branch offices we go Cisco. We end up selling Cisco to 95% of our
customers. In-line powered phones is a big advantage. Power outlets at the
desk are usually filled, it's nice to avoid power strips at every desk.

I see 3Com has a price advantage and Cisco has a Technology advantage.
Support from Cisco is excellent. Lots of time the problem people have with
the Cisco solution is the complexity. Cisco VoIP can work in many different
environments, 3Com is more positioned for the standard/simple small office.
Don't forget data integration with IP phone system. XML applications to the
phone are a very good thing. Some applications on the phones our customers
like are phone directories, time-clock sign-in/sign-out (for hourly staff).

You have to look at the survivability of the company. 3Com has problems
turning a profit. Networkers hate 3Com NICs, 3Com has exited the core
switching market. They now sell NICs (most professionals hate them), modems
(commodity), low end switches (commodity), home broadband routers (Cable/DSL
commodity), and a low end phone system. How long will this model work
Will they dump the NBX in the next 12 months???

Subject: OT: Cisco AVVID vs. 3Com [7:33705]

Thanks

RE: Internet Router? [7:33639]

2002-01-30 Thread Bill Carter

The 3640 will work for you. I would definitely max out the RAM. Some
others have commented about not needing full BGP route tables. My customers
have been very happy with partial tables as described in the following CCO
link. I have also had customers use 2 2650's, 1 T-1 per connection box,
HSRP on the Ethernet port and run IBGP between each other for optimal
routing. I then configured them with the below link.

Scott, we just replaced our 7204 w/128 MB with a 7505 256 to handle dual
DS3s. At last glimpse there were 103,000 routes. This upgrade was for
future impacts. The 7204 has been reallocated to handle another DS3 all
by itself. Hope this helps...just my .02

Re: OSPF Startup questions [7:33711]

2002-01-30 Thread Cebuano

Thanks,
I should pay closer attention to Doyle next time.
But still, i would think that regardless if there's a new
router with a higher RID that comes on line, the DR/BDR
should be the default MASTER to initiate the exchange
since he's got all the topology/links info in the area, except
of course for scenarios where there is no DR/BDR.

RE: Errors on Ethernet Ports on 6500?!?!?! [7:32853]

2002-01-30 Thread Bill Carter

I have been seeing a lot of problems with 3COM NIC's If the switch is
forced 100/full and the NIC is auto we get a lot of errors, if NIC is forced
100/Full errors go away. If Switch and 3Com NIC left to auto switch will
come up 100/full and NIC 100/half.

You have to make sure the NIC is also forced.

Subject: Errors on Ethernet Ports on 6500?!?!?! [7:32853]

This is wild stuff, so I thought I'd run it by GroupStudy to see if anyone
had seen this before or knew what caused it.

We're currently migrating connections from a 5513+RSM to a new
6509+Sup2/MSFC2. There were three ethernet connections, that upon being
moved from the 5500 to the 6500, starting showing input errors and CRC
errors. When these connections were moved, the port on the 6500 was
configured identically to the same port on the 5500 as far as speed, duplex,
VLAN assignment, and spanning tree settings.

These same devices (same patch cables and all) created no errors on the 5500
whatsoever.

Here's the kicker: When we went back and changed the port speed/duplex to
"auto" on the 6500, it negociated the same speed/duplex settings we had
forced, but now there were no more errors. (i.e. a server set for 100-Full,
that was plugged into a switchport on the 5500 forced to 100-Full was fine,
but plugged into a port on the 6500 forced to 100-Full caused errors, and
plugged into the exact same 6500 port set for "auto" speed/duplex had no
errors.)

Any ideas on why letting the switch detect settings caused no errors while
forcing it to those same settings causes errors?

Thanks,
Mike W.

That is a common problem with 3Com NICs you can try upgrading the dirvers
witch sometimes helps but hardsetting speed and duplex to 100/full on both

Regarding this command...
"Default-information originate [always]"
this is documented as saying...
this generates the default route into OSPF even if the path to the default
route goes down...
and...
even when the router has no default route, with the magic keyword "always" it
will create a "default route"...pointing to where??
Q: What's the point of advertising a route if it is indeed DOWN? Isn't this
like saying i know that Exit5 is closed but I'm gona keep directing all
motorists to go to Exit 5 anyway?

Please clarify this for me.

Elmer

Hi all!

Could anyone please, clarify me if there is any chance of mapping a Host
name to an IPX address.
Like we do for IP addresses
This is for Cisco routers 2621 and 3640.

Thanks for any reply,

IPX question - can workstations see the fake servers configed [7:33733]

2002-01-30 Thread Chuck Larrieu

Sorry, my attempts to test this locally have failed miserably due to other
( related ) IPX problems.

If I configure SAP sources on a router - i.e. servers and printers - will I
be able to see those "devices" when I browse using network neighborhood on a
Windoze PC?

Chuck

aside - I installed the Microsoft client for Novell networks and experience
a similar problem to the one described by my customer - takes a long time
for a login screen to appear. agonizingly slow browsing, etc. I have a Dell
with a 3com card, so I need to update my drivers, as has been discussed
elsewhere ;->

As the port is in full duplex, the fact that it doesn't show any
collisions doesn't mean anything, as it doesn't look for them. I agree
with the previous poster: triple-check the NIC in the RS6000. Lots of
runts, CRC errors and alignment errors on a FDX port is an almost-sure
sign that the other end is set to half duplex.

It's sad that you are supposedly a CCIE candidate and you cannot read the

top of that you request people violate the NDA they signed by telling you

Re: EIGRP problem [7:33636]

2002-01-30 Thread Chuck Larrieu

personally, I would call the telco and whine and complain and rant and rave
at them. It may not be their problem ( based on the problem description )
but it's a great stress reliever.

It is also possible that there is a hardware problem. perhaps a TAC case
should be opened?

Also, it is possible that the IOS image is corrupt. One can still download
similar images from CCO, provided one has a contract.

I agree- EIGRP would be the last place I would look as a cause.

RE: Internet Router? [7:33639]

2002-01-30 Thread Hire, Ejay

Have you checked the utilization on those 2650's? I'd bet it's never gotten
above 15%. The 2650's can handle a lot more than 1 t-1's worth of traffic.

Thank you all for your replies. I have solved the problem, apparently these
MAU's are not capable of 16mb speeds. I chaned the speed on the token ring

I don't need 16mb anyway because this is a non production lab.

the router prices you were quoted were very good, however memory/flash
considerations should be looked at.
1924-a/en and 2924-xl can be gotten for less on ebay (300$ and 550)
respectively, modules can be gotten for less on ebay as well.
Definately look into buying the routers though.

RE: Lab Essentials [7:33737]

2002-01-30 Thread Daniel Cotts

Rather than a place I'll mention some situations:
1) Your employer gives/loans you some gear.
2) You are aware of a company that ceases business. They directly sell you
gear.
3) You buy equipment coming off lease. Either you have a contact with the
leasing company or know the buyout price for the company holding the gear.
4) Similar to (2). An auction of a company that has gone out of business.
Problem is that many can be bidding.
5) An equipment reseller. Many acquire their inventory by one of the above
methods.
6) eBay auctions. Always a good place to look under "completed auctions" to
get an idea of fair value.

Decide which switch and which router and start hunting. Good luck!

Re: EIGRP problem [7:33636]

2002-01-30 Thread Priscilla Oppenheimer

You should be looking down a couple layers. EIGRP operation can't cause the
line protocol to go down. The line protocol being down indicates a
data-link layer problem or maybe a physical-layer problem. What more can
you tell us about this installation? There must be some more clues if you
refocus your attention away from EIGRP.

RE: Recent One-Day Lab Takers?? [7:33592]

2002-01-30 Thread Kaminski, Shawn G

I don't believe that "Cisco Nuts" is breaking the NDA by asking what
equipment is in the lab. Cisco gives this information out freely on their
site but they have a habit of not updating it when they add new equipment to
the lab. It's bad enough we have to fork out all that money to take the lab
(the average is about three times). The least we should know is what
equipment we're going to be working on so we can simulate our home labs to
match the actual lab. Just my opinion.

It's sad that you are supposedly a CCIE candidate and you cannot read the
web site stating what equipment you are expected to know for the exam. On
top of that you request people violate the NDA they signed by telling you
the exact composite of the rack!

This side is set (or auto-negotiated) to full duplex. Receiving while
sending is not an error. This side should never report a collision. That
doesn't mean that there can't be a duplex-mode mismatch. A mismatch could
result in both sides reporting errors, just of different sorts.

The other side could be set (or auto-negotiated) to half-duplex. You should
check if it has errors, including collisions. If the half-duplex side does
its normal CSMA/CD thing, senses no data, and happens to send while the
other side is sending, the result is a collision from the half-duplex
sender's viewpoint. The half-duplex side stops sending and backs off, in
the middle of its frame. The result is probably a runt with either an
alignment and/or Frame Check Sequence (FCS) error. The recipient receives
an errored frame, even though it can't correlate this with a collision
event. The recipient reports a runt and/or FCS or alignment error.

Now, if you are sure that you don't have the obvious problem that everyone
is going to assume you have (duplex mismatch), and you are still seeing
alignment and FCS errors, then it's time to start investigating what else
besides collisions could damage frames. An FCS means that the FCS placed in
the frame by the sender doesn't match the FCS calculated by the recipient.
In other words, a bit got changed. An alignment error means that the frame
didn't end on an 8-bit boundary. In other words, a bit got dropped.

Besides collisions, these errors could be caused by crosstalk, impedance
mismatch, noise, running a power generator next the cables, lightning
strikes, etc.

Hope that makes sense. Please let us know the resolution. It will be a good
learning experience.

Priscilla

Someone mentioned theere being an online course for PBX fundamentals. Is
this a free resource? I checked cisco.com, but I may have missed it.

Thanks,

SPAN question for 6000 IDSM [7:33757]

2002-01-30 Thread Telemachus Luu

Hi,

How do I go about SPANning multiple vlans to a port. I have a 6000 IDSM
blade in slot 9 and the monitoring port is 1. However, I can only span one
vlan (one ingress session for both directions) at any one time.

"set span "vlan#" 9/1"

Running this command again for another vlan will only make the previous vlan
inactive for SPANning.
My goal is to SPAN several (15) vlans or ALL the vlans. Any suggestions?

thanks,
Telemachus

Is ISL still widely used? Are there still many shops out there using it? (I
assume Cisco only outfits) It seems that Cisco has all but dropped support

IGRP over EIGRP...How?? [7:33760]

2002-01-30 Thread Cisco Nuts

Hello,
I have 3 routers running both Eigrp 1 and Igrp 100. I configed. a
distance of 4 for Igrp so that it would be the preferred protocol but
the routing table shows both Eigrp and Igrp learned route for the same
netw. I am trying to understand why? I expected to only see Igrp learned
routes since the lower admin dist. of 4 would take over Eigrp's dist.
of 90...but it is not apparently so. Any ideas? Thank you.
Example
on RTC:
6.0.0.0/8 is variably subnetted, 2 subnets, 2 masks
D 6.6.6.6/32 [90/4064] via 192.168.10.241, 00:00:05, Serial0
I 6.0.0.0/8 [4/158750] via 192.168.10.241, 00:00:05, Serial

Config. on RTC: !
router eigrp 1
passive-interface Ethernet0
network 7.0.0.0
network 192.168.10.0
no auto-summary
!
router igrp 100
passive-interface Ethernet0
network 7.0.0.0
network 192.168.10.0
distance 4

2002-01-30 Thread Mike Bernico

Partial tables are probably fine. If you must do full tables (probably due
to a customer power trip) and your customer will have BGP connections to two
or more ASes (ISPs) then I'd strongly recommend a box that can handle 128MB.
64 just isn't enough to crunch all those paths, I've seen quite a few 7200s
with 64mb blow up in that very environment.

2002-01-30 Thread MADMAN

There are lots of ISL trunks still working, if it ain't broke... But
yes the direction is dot1q and I have been suggesting customers consider
dot1q on new installs. The original argument, dot1q does not support
per VLAN spanning, is no longer valid.

Re: ethernet errors explained [7:33687]

2002-01-30 Thread Mike Mandulak

I'm sure we'll keep seeing this problem for years to come... Auto negotiate
does NOT work properly for a lot of NICs with older drivers. If you can,
upgrade the driver on the RS6000. I know a while back IBM used the 3Com
chipset in RS6000s, I don't know if that's true anymore but I bet it is. IBM
may or may not have a driver that addresses this issue, in which case you
are going to have to force the duplex on the RS6000 to full and do the same
on the switch.
