I had to change my posting name and email to get through. Anyone know why
all the sudden I'd be getting blocked/filtered?

SBI/PacBell "Basic" ADSL PVCs?

2001-02-14 Thread Jason

Here's what I just sent off to PacBell's support team, but I'm sure I'll
have to battle their live tech support personnel to get in touch with an
engineer who can answer this (if someone else knows, that'd be great as my
ATM knowledge is limited to configuring a few 1417 ADSL CPE routers):

Up until this point the customer has connected with their Westel Wirespeed
using the EnterNet 300 software. However, we're moving to a new platform for
VPN support and security:

I'm configuring a Cisco 1720 router with an ADSL interface card for a
customer with Basic ADSL which uses PPPoE. The Cisco 1720 supports PPPoE
authentication, but I first need more ATM info. What PVC information should
I configure for the router? I've tried 0/35 & 8/35 (the two standard PVCs I
know about for Enhanced ADSL), but neither get me past Layer 2 ATM.

--

As a side note, here's the base config I used on the 1720 and also on an
827-4v for my personal static "Enhanced" ADSL connection (no need for PPPoE,
and PVC 0/35 worked):

Re: Modem to Console Port

2001-02-14 Thread Jason

All good advice, but at the least issue 'disable' when you're done so that
privileged commands cannot be issued, and use exec-timeout in case you get
bumped off your phone line and can't get back in right away.

Re: Telnet to PIX outside interface

2001-02-14 Thread Jason

This is by design for security reasons. The insecure solution is to provide
a conduit for telnet to a terminal server device on the inside (i.e. router,
switch, something that can accept telnet and then allow you to telnet from
the device), and once telnetted to it, telnet to the inside interface of the
PIX.

The more secure solution would be to have a SSH2 server on the inside for a
secure connection through the PIX, and then SSH to the PIX (or telnet from
the SSH2 server if the inside is fully trusted).

VNC can be tunneled through SSH2, which fixes any security problems. Not an

You don't need the CCNP to get these specializations anymore, just the

Re: INCREDIBLY OFF TOPIC: Phones?

2001-02-15 Thread Jason

Telephony is very much a part of Cisco these days, including the CCIE lab
and CCNP Voice Access Specialization. You'll find a good start at Cisco's
site:
http://cisco.com/go/avvid/

As a side note, we're starting an 18 site AVVID install tomorrow. We'll be
bringing up the PSTN PRI and two Call Manager boxes, with the cut-over date
for the first site (150 phones) late next week. Wish me luck, heh. Oh, did
I mention the owner of the company is close friends with our CEO? Got to
love these sort projects that just must work, no excuses.

Re: SBI/PacBell "Basic" ADSL PVCs?

2001-02-15 Thread Jason

What other suggestions do you have for a large customer with a large amount
of sites that wants to connect securely, but cheaply in the long run?
$39/mo. per site for 384K guaranteed access is all they're seeing right now,
vs. 128K ISDN for twice as much, and an Access Server at the central site as
well, which they wouldn't need so long as they have internet connectivity
(which they do). This current customer is a law enforcement office with 30+
remote sites and the main site has T3 access to the main county office, and
from there out to their PBI T3 internet access, and this current internet
access doesn't come from their budget. The biggest problem is that
PacBell/ASI is uncooperative at this point and doesn't want them taking a
cheap solution. No doubt they'd rather sell them another T3 at the main
site with T1s to all the remote sites. 30 sites at government T1 access is
around $150 + mileage, and a couple $K for the T3. Do the math, and even
with occasional outages (which are acceptable to this customer), the cost
savings can't be overlooked. Worst case, we'll probably configure a small
access server and external modems off the AUX ports of the 1720s for backup
dialing (another advantage of having the ADSL WIC so the router actually
knows when the link goes down).

5.2(4) is rather new (last 2 weeks or so), and still supports static
conduits.

Re: SBI/PacBell "Basic" ADSL PVCs?

2001-02-15 Thread Jason

Thanks for the advice, I'll check out that PVC. Basically, we get Layer 1
connectivity to the ATM switch, but are failing to bring the PVC up (ILMI
errors). As I said, I'm not ATM expert. I don't think we're even to the
PPPoE stage of authentication (debug ppp negotiation & debug ppp
authentication never show any lines).

The PVCs I do know about are 0/35 or 8/35, which work on the static/Enhanced
DSL lines I've configured.

Does ATM have a way of "auto detecting" the PVCs? I mean, how does the
Alcatel chipset (for instance, in the Westel Wirespeeds we're issued) know
what PVC? At my house the PVC is 8/35, which works fine with my Westel, but
the PVC is different at this PPPoE site, but yet the Westel knows or figures
it out (I've tried my Westel at this PPPoE site just for kicks, and it works
fine with the EnterNet 300 software on the PC).

Does anyone have a link to the VPN3000 Concentrator Win2k beta software?
I'm eager to try this out and ditch having to configure both IPSEC/ISAKMP

The PIX can use internally stored pre-shared keys, or can use external
authentication such as TACACS+.

Re: SBI/PacBell "Basic" ADSL PVCs?

2001-02-15 Thread Jason

The worst thing is the run-around with tech support. Everyone likes to say
"We don't support Cisco" to which I say "the router doesn't matter, but you
asked so I told you, I just want your switch configuration info for an end
user." Basically, if you're using the exact configuration and hardware they
support, it's like pulling teeth to get anywhere. I know if I could get to
an end engineer I could actually get the information I need. This morning I
battled through a level 1 and level 2 phone support personnel before the
third person (I believe still at level 2) magically turned up the following
PVCs:

4/0
202/142
107/142

He had no clue what went where, and was uncooperative to get this escalated
further to find out for sure which was the PVC needed at the end user site.
Unfortunately I was not on site, or else I'd have had them hold until I
tried each. When I was able to have the customer try each, none worked.

Cisco TAC isn't able to help until I have the correct PVC information, as
all they can say is that it's incorrect (which I can read from the debugs
just as well).

Tomorrow I'll try 0/33, as someone on the list has suggested has been
mentioned on DSLReports. I'm just frustrated with PBI/ASI's level of
support of late, especially for their lower end products such as ADSL.
Support for FR has been horrid as well, but that seems mainly due to
miscommunication between the local loop and ASI (still ASI's fault as they
should be following up to see that sites are getting installed). Anyway,
I'm ranting and tired so I should stop now ;-p

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Re: SBI/PacBell "Basic" ADSL PVCs?

2001-02-15 Thread Jason

Yeah, I know PPPoE sucks and I've told the customer that I recommend using a
LinkSys router to handle the PPPoE and the Cisco VPN Client software for the
VPN/IPSEC for the sites with smaller amounts of people, and getting
Enhanced/static ADSL for the larger sites. But they're looking at the
bottom line long term and also maximum security (LinkSys is not really
secure enough as a NAT out to a bad website could provide a hole back in).
At the moment though, they want me to pursue getting PPPoE to work with the
Cisco gear.

/27 is the correct summarization for those routes, but the range it covers
is 0-31, with 1-30 being valid hosts. Get a subnet calculator to

Re: telnet - to - PIX & Internet router-

2001-02-16 Thread Jason

Correct, for security reasons the PIX does not act as a terminal server to
allow you to telnet from it. If you wish to telnet to a router through the
pix, configure a static NAT, and the a conduit to permit tcp/23.

Re: Firewalls and VPNs

2001-02-16 Thread Jason

As someone said yesterday: The PIX will not route, period. It will NAT
(including NAT 0), but it will not route packets between different networks.
If you need routing off any interface on a PIX, you need a router there.

Re: Investment Question about 1900, 2500, and 5000 series equipment

2001-02-16 Thread Jason

They're all definitely on the heading toward end of life phase, but I think
they'd be worthwhile to learn on. Most labs are made up of 2500s. The 5000
will get you some CatalystOS experience (I believe that's the term for the
non-IOS based switching OS, although depending on the blades/software
versions may not support newer commands, and the 1900 will get you some
basic IOS-based switch experience. I'd just look at it as an investment in
training for yourself, and not expect a large resell value, although there
will still be some, if nothing else for another person looking to set up a
lab.

IMHO, the 700 line is a huge waste of time. Avoid burning time on them and
just study everything else so that you can eat the few questions you get on
them.

When will Cisco dump those 700s anyway? And now this other non-IOS based
600 line for cheap end-user CPE equipment. Bleh.

Re: Scenario we need help with...

2001-02-16 Thread Jason

Be aware that the DNS RFC says caching nameservers don't have to honor any
TTL less than 2 days. This means realistically you could be looking at 2
days worth of downtime globally. We do these sort of moves on a Friday
evening, and by Monday morning caches are cleared and resolving to the
proper address.

Here's a though, and I'm sure I'm overlooking something:

Bind two IPs to the webserver, the new one and the old one. That way
traffic will come in and go back out for the proper IP, and the PIX will NAT
them back to the original IP. You could use route-maps to direct the
traffic out the correct PIX. I know this worked with no problem for my
Linux box when I cut over to a new ISP when I was multi-homed (no PIXes
involved, just two ISPs and two IPs).

The biggest thing is to test to make sure the box responds with the original
IP address, and not the primary IP. It's not a problem with my lil' Linux
server.

Cisco 2620 as a Firewall??

2000-11-26 Thread Jason

I was recently using Cisco's Product Selection Tool and was looking for
routers that might dub as a firewall. After putting in all of my options,
it listed the 2620 as a potential candidate for the Firewall functionality
in addition to routing voice and data. Considering that I already have a
2621 in the closet, --

My question is this -- How exactly can I get the router to work as a
firewall as well as a router? I am looking for details as I can already
guess the basics. I'm sure I need an IOS upgrade which includes PIX or some
other firewall functionality. If you have experience in this area, share
the knowledge! Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks so much,
Jason

Re: OSPF Lab - DR behaviour with loopbacks WAS: RE: question about loopback interfaces

2000-11-30 Thread Jason

I thought OSPF is suppose to converge whenever you have a change in the
route. I.e whenever any interface bounce.. regardless of the OSPF Router ID.
The difference is probably in terms of the amount of "data" being sent.. but
definitely a covergence would occur..

Bring equipments in and out of US

2000-09-16 Thread Jason

I need to bring a few routers out of US and maybe in a couple of months,
bring them back again. What can I do to avoid any inport and export taxes
since I plan to bring the same equipments in and out for personal use. But
I'm sure I'll have a hard time convincing them that I have 6 routers for
personal use !! :-P

Anybody has any experiences, trainers, etc , please let me know.

Thanks !!

Re: You were good ,but biased too.good luck anyways,

2000-09-26 Thread Jason

I didn't follow the exact situation here and so I'm not sure what went
through here. But to answer Pradeep's question " BTW, how many people from
this forum have you really "placed" Any figures ? " , the way I look at it,
if you are a professional headhunter, it's not so much how many you have
placed but how many you have CORRECTLY match up and placed.

I can assure you that lots of these will match up and try to place even if
you don't fit !!

I appreciate the fact that Raymond actually get back to you even if he
doesn't have anything suitable unlike others that will just dump you into a
database. I actually got some that tells me I'm a good fit for a particular
position , blah blah blah and ask me to sent them the resume as they don't
have it on file !!??!! In that aspect, I think he has done what he could and
even if he didn't managed to placed some/many/all of us, I still thinks
highly of him and wishes him all the best.

For those who is looking for a professional who can place you correctly and
not just anywhere, please contact "SANDY XA" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> . I'm VERY
impressed with her professionalism and the way she work. I am not getting
anything out of this, I have not even met the lady except works with her
through the phone. Although I eventually got something else on my own , I
was very impressed by her. She really find out where you are, what you want
and try to match to her client and the thing I like most about her is the
fact that she feedbacks IMMEDIATELY any responses from her clients,
regardless of it being positive or negative. In addition, she doesn't go
ahead and forward your resume unless you have seen the job description and
company profile and agrees that you are interested.

Feel free to forward her your resume if you are in the Bay Area, CA .

This is basically what is known as a bodyshop. You are a mechandise, you fit
the decription, the price match. He doesn't care if you can do the job, if
you cannot, he will just replaced you. I would suggest that you call him
back and inform him that should you go down and they changed their mind,
they are expected to pay you for time wasted IF you need a job. Otherwise,
don't bother

Should the very first thing that you should do in this case is to check what
ports they are attempting to connected to in reverse direction ?

Guess it's nice to be called "stupid" by someone who asked for advises.
Teach all of us not to response in future to stupid questions in the first
place.
Why did you bother to take the written in the first place, why not be
prepared for the lab and then take the written ? Sure as hell save all your
headaches !!
Between waiting 6 months and doing the lab at the nearest possible time, I'm
sure there are enough people "smart enough" to tell you that it might just
be worth it.

Why do people assume that there is a significant differences between
studying for CCNP and CCIE ? The same materials used for CCIE can be used
for CCNP , especially when it come to the practical.

Re: Free Cisco CCIE labs [7:2705]

2001-05-01 Thread Jason

Well , if your requirement is just CCNP (certifications) , then obviously no
lab is necessary. If your requirement is CCNP level of knowledge. Using a
book meant for CCIE Lab doesn't do any harm and in fact is just as relevant.
One of the most commonly overlook materials for CCIE preparation is actually
the courseware for CCNP's courses.. I'm sometimes amazed at some of the
questioned asked (including by me) that can be found in the ICND, BSCN, etc
courseware....

Re: port number list on DOS [7:2809]

You can check for well-know ports. Also there are various utilities that
will allow you to link the ports to the process running on the machine. Most
of these utils will work only on NT or W2K since Win9X is somewhat braindead
in TCPIP

Re: Disable telnet port (Cisco Trivia) [7:3289]

1. I assume across WAN means using routable protocol.
2. IPX is the alternative routable protocol.
3. SNMP supports IPX ... Not having tested that with Cisco, I cannot be
sure... is that one of the solutions ?

This is becoming one of those why do NT guys look down on Unix guys

the trainer on the first day because he doesn't know how to use a mouse, and
the trainer insisted that he is not going to train someone how to use the
mouse on a Admin course.

What was your point ? That Multics sucks , and by the same token, therefore
Unix sucks and NT/W2K rules !!! At least, NT/W2K was based on a working
operating system. Anyone of you notice that Unix is all about ego ? If Unix
is finished in 1 month, why are there still people working on it ? On the
other hand, if Unix is perfect, why the hell are people working on it ? If
Unix promotes innovation, why is nobody using it ? Would you trust you ATM
machine to Linux ?

Yap, definitely sheltered !! :-) Most ATm runs on OS2, 2nd most popular is
NT. I don't see Linux there and I am not interested in seeing it there

Oh, now the IOS is Unixish ?? Phew, so by that token, all Unix experts would
be CCIE... so I guess the number would include all the so call Unix/Linux
"experts"
I don't remember mentioning that the ATM runs NT, most of them actually run
OS2. The extra $$ you save from using open?? source OS would be waste on
support

In case you have not notice, Cisco is working on a GUI

You make me laugh even more...

1. When has that become a issue ? LOL

2 + 3 . So show me a Cisco router running x-windows since Cisco IOS is unix
based and Unix can run x-windows . :-) . X-Window is NOT Unix, but let's not
get technical here, you won't understand...

4. Yes, I would highly suggest that you do the same ..

5. I have not even bother to display any technical knowledge here, all this
are empty talk/arguement, anytime you have a this OS is better than that OS,
it is empty talk !! Absolutely no value in it at all. You should be aware of
that even before you reply to this message.

Re: Additions to CCIE R&S lab [7:34136]

2002-02-12 Thread Jason

Errr,

I thought Brad was the one who started the rumour that Cisco is going to
have PIX , etc in the R&S lab some time back.. I'm too lazy to search for
the message but I'm sure more than a couple of people here will remember

J

P.s. If my lab is over and done with, and I'm a reseller for Cisco , I'll
probably recommend that Cisco throw in everything that they have on the R&S
labs... sure as hell keep the competitions away...

Grandstore , until the name was trashed like @!#$ and then they became
IQSale , and then THAT name was trashed and now they changed name again.. So

Don't buy from IQSale Was Re: don't buy from ComRe [7:17023]

2001-08-23 Thread Jason

And they probably thought that you didn't know what you are asking for and
that they are doing you a favour by giving you a switch :-P

What I would really tell everybody is not to buy from IQSale and Grandstore,
these guys are FRAUD !!! CHEATERS. So guys, remember, don't buy from IQSale
aka Grandstore aka HiTEK they also use different seller names in eBay .
When you ask a question regarding something on eBay, you will get a response
, but then they will not response when they have to do refund, etc

Re: Don't buy from OneSource Was Don't buy from IQ [7:17225]

2001-08-24 Thread Jason

Well, my advise to all is still the same, don't buy from

1. OneSource
2. IQSale
3. GrandStore
4. Hitek

They are the same companies and they seems to believe that changing their
names help to avoid their responsibilities to their customers. They are
FRAUD and CHEATER . I will also put up the names of the people that I was in
contact with in a web page shortly... If you know of anybody that has been
cheat or default by these companies above, please forward details to me and
I will put it together in a web page as a warning to others.

If anybody knows any other name that the companies go by , let me know... I
will be putting up a web page pertaining to this company and I strongly
suggest that anybody thinking of buying anything from them either directly
or through eBay, seriously reconsider it.

Re: atm lab [7:16210]

2001-08-25 Thread Jason

1. More Expensive : Get two routers with two ATM interface, you can
configure for ATM PVC - back to back.

2. Slightly Cheaper : Get two router with MFT and configure for ATM mode on
the T1 , you can configure for ATM PVC - back to back.

For SVC, you must have a ATM switch although a cheaper option is to use
non-Cisco switches.

Re: Does access list work for router originated packets [7:17485]

2001-08-27 Thread Jason

Priscilla,

This is NOT a anomaly !! This is well documented behavior. In fact, in ICND
course, this is the first thing that we highlighted when we started
discussing ACL...

ACL does not act on the packets that originate in the same router as where
the ACL is defined.

Re: IQSale , Grandstore Was Re: Prologue: Anything [7:18022]

2001-08-30 Thread Jason

Louis,

I don't know about you, but for IQSale / GrandStores / Hitek , in fact every
message that I wrote to this Forum, I actually forward to various people in
IQSale as well to provide them a opportunity to defend themselves and make
right their mistakes. However, if they chose not to make right their
mistakes and they felt that what I said is wrong or lies , they could easily
sent their lawyers after me .

I know a lot of people chose not to make statements regarding companies like
that simply because of fear, in my case, I'm prepared to standby my
statements, that they promise me a refund and till date, I have not received
a single cent and they have failed to response to me after that. If you
don't call that fraud and dishonest practise, I really don't know what you
will call it. I guess you call them honest bible loving people who deserve a
chance

As for eBay ratings, those are BS !! Don't trust the ratings... eBay don't
really care ... Also please stop the mis-use of the Bibles Quotes in this
forum, maybe if you can close down all the Courts, etc in your country ,
you can start using the quote again

I guess somehow this pass through my newsgroup reader without me noticing
it.
If I were to tell you what topic you missed, then obviously I'll be breaking
the NDA.

Anyway, I also have a standard cabling that works fine for me . I actually
spent time going through the lab scenerios trying to figure out if my eqpt
would works for the scenerio and how to optimize the eqpts placements , and
that waste lots of time because it has to be repeated for every lab
scenerio, I'm however glad that you are working on updating the scenerios.

It's not so much the binding as the quality of the presentation, I could
scan a page and let everybody take a look at what I mean, part of the edge
of the page is missing, etc..However, I don't see the point to that This
info is just meant to help people decided ... The other problem is that the
labs was standardise on your eqpt, i.e. if you have AGS, you assume
everybody has AGS, etc... so it's difficult to find the exact number of
interfaces, etc as what you have in the scenerios..

No problem.
