RE: 3500XL - duplicate IP and Windows NT/2000 server [7:73868]
You may be able to track the MAC address to a specific manufacturer. That should narrow down the source (unless it is a softcoded MAC). RE: electrical issues with switches [7:72151]
I'd also like to know if Cisco puts voltage protection on the blades? While not exactly the same thing, at my last position we had hundreds of serial terminal servers (Nortel Annex) connected to dumb terminals (all over the country). We found that during bad weather, or other power related issues, the terminal server's serial connections (RJ45) acted as lightning rods. While the terminal server was on APC, the dumb terminals generally were not. When the terminals received a power surge (etc..) they would happily redistribute the jolt to the the serial port and then the terminal server, frying individual ports, blades, and sometimes the entire terminal server. 95% of the time the dumb terminals were fine once the terminal server was replaced. In 2 years we probably replaced 85 of the 350 or so deployed. Unless there is some expressed interest please respond to me privately if you would, thanks. We have suffered over the last couple of years what I would consider an unusually high number of blade failures in various switches (from several vendors including Extreme and Cisco). They have the earmarks of an electrical problem, that is, supplied current spiking and valleying. For instance, where I am located - Northern Virginia - we had some major storms move through last night. This morning I had two blade failures in two separate closets. These closets all have UPS units (usually more than one) and the switches, all of which have dual power supplies, and are split with one power supply going to one UPS, the other to another UPS. Granted both are in the same room and usually plugged into the same circuit. Seemingly this would eliminate, or at least mitigate, the bulk of any electrical fluctuations in the closets. The UPS's have been tested with various diagnostic tools and they appear to check out fine. My question is this. The failures seem to occur more often on densely populated blades (isn't that always the case?). Many people in the building leave their PC's on at night. When the power goes out in this building, the PCs in most areas will also power down. When power is restored, even if it just flickers, all these machines will boot at the same time. Is there any chance that this surge - if there is one - of current coming from the rebooted PC NIC cards could cause these issues? Or is there even a current that flows back from the NIC's (it would seem logical, but I am not an EE). I do realize that I may be grasping at straws. Any thoughts, and again I apologize for the off topic content. There are many bright folks in this group so I thought I would ask. can't ping my own interfaces?? [7:63437]
Hello All, I'm quite perplexed, please help out if you can! My PC has two ethernet cards. One is connected to a Linksys Router, which is connected to a cable modem for internet access. The other ethernet card is plugged into a 2924XL cisco switch. 1. I can ping the cable modem and access the web - no problem. 2. I can ping an IP address on the 2924XL, no problem. 3. I can ping my PC FROM the 2924XL, no problem. PROBLEM: FROM my PC, I can't ping EITHER of my local IP addresses of the ethernet cards. One IP is 192.169.1.100/24, the other is 192.168.1.67/28. Can somebody give me a clue?! Thanks in advance! actually what I do with Sniffer Pro to monitor the WAN (even though I wont see layer 2 stuff which the wan sniffer will see) is I port mirror the Ethernet port where the router plugs into the lan/wan switch to an open port and plug my sniffer in there. hope this helps. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:alaerte@;embratel.com.br] Sent: Tuesday, October 29, 2002 6:47 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: HELP WITH SNIFFER PRO [7:56442] You do need a WAN hardware in the Sniffer. RE: Cabletron vs Cisco Switches [7:49812]

I don't like the VH's very much either, but they are cheap. To make them run reasonably well, make sure you have the 2.05.00 firmware. In the Bridge Extension under VLAN learning, make sure you are running in IVL mode. SVL is evil and causes unpredictable results. Changing from SVL to IVL requires a reboot. Also make sure you enable IGMP on your VH's 2200's and 6000 to ensure the multicast traffic isn't broadcast everywhere. This setting is off by default on all your Cabletron products. Once you get all that set, they should behave pretty well. I've seen some weird spanning tree problems in poorly designed networks, but that may be getting better with the latest firmware. If you're looking for some good, inexpensive switches, check out the HP Procurves. I've had good results with them and they are a little less than the VH's. Good Luck!! Thanks for the reply! Good point about the router ID. After the first response, I began playing with the OSPF "router-id" command, and subsequently discovered that the virtual-link must be defined as terminating at the router-id, and not the physical interface or in any specific area. RE: Why does IOS only allow ICMP granularity on "destination" [7:42656]
I think it relates to the fact that ICMP uses TYPES rather than PORTS. Though it still uses source and destination IP address, ports are not used, so the whole source port thing doesn't really make sense with ICMP. There really is no "source type", so they don't have granularity on the source address. Make Sense? Or did I muddy the waters further? -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Thursday, April 25, 2002 5:29 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: Why does IOS only allow ICMP granularity on "destination" [7:42618] On Sep 15, 12:40pm, "Gaz" wrote: } } I don't think you will see the source as echo reply. OSPF Virtual-links [7:42565]
My question is regarding OSPF and virtual links. As you can see, I have created an area 23 between R2 and R3 such that R3 will need a virtual link defined in order to have a connection to Area 0. My question is, does R3 have to peer with an interface in R2 that is a member of area 0? I have noticed that if I put R2's loopback interface (which R3 is peering to) in area 23, it fails, whereas, if I move the interface to area 0, the virtual link comes up. Please take a look at the crude diagram below, or the attached visio for clarification. Please let me know your thoughts on this. Thanks again for all of your informed help (and I apologize if this appears to be a less-than-CCIE-caliber question). RE: OSPF over ISDN demand circuit [7:42348]
Why not just deny the OSPF traffic in the dialer list, thereby declaring it uninteresting to bring up the link, but okay to pass over the link once the call has been established. Or, how about the no peer neighbor-route statement?Thoughts? >From CCO: Under the BRI interface that is running demand circuit, configure no peer neighbor-route. This prevents the /32 mask from being installed. You can use the configuration shown below on Router 1 only, but we recommend configuring this command on both sides for consistency. Sent: Wednesday, April 24, 2002 1:42 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: OSPF over ISDN demand circuit [7:42348] Hi, Having passive for the ISDN int would stop OSPF multicast hellos from going across the ISDN interface. You could still do a neighbor statement though which is unicast however. If the ISDN is bouncing, it's probably due to a route-redistribution problem or some form of IP traffic going out the ISDN interface. Do you have other routing protocols sending updates out ISDN (use passive interface for those routing protocols). Check your redistribution, do you have filters to not allow the ISDN/dialer interface IP subnet to be redistributed into OSPF again? To see whats triggering the ISDN/dialer int do: show dialer (should have a reason) debug interface bri/dialer debug ip pack (see note below) Debug ip pack generates a lot of output and might/will crash the router so be careful with it. If you use the debug interface (interface) condition then the debug output will only show traffic in/out of the interface specified which will narrow down the output. --- timothy thielen wrote: > If one wishes for routing updates to bring up the > link, can one not just use > the "passive-interface" command on the ISDN > interface? > > If it is a backup link, passive interface will > keep routing updates will > keep the link from coming up for updates. i have seen this before with a similar environment but the device that was causing this was an old bay box that was generating TCN BPDU's causing respans. you might want to fire up a sniffer and filter on BPDU. as far as the root switch, i would nail down the priority on all of the switches. be aware of what the default priorities are on both the cisco and enterasys devices. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Friday, April 19, 2002 8:23 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Spanning Tree in a Cisco / Cabltron (Enterasys) environment [7:41944] We have a mixed environment of Enterasys E7, Cabletron 6000, Cabletron MMACs and a Cisco 2948. [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Thursday, March 21, 2002 3:14 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: VTP Servers [7:39083] Hello, The switches use the VTP database with the highest config-revision. IE: You can be playing with a switch not attached to the network and then attach it to the network and if it's config-revision is higher it will wipe out the other switches. Changing the VTP domain makes the config-revision 0 again. So it is important to make sure the config-revision is 0 before you plug it into a live network if you don't want this switch to overwrite your VLAN databases. I don't recall offhand the 'show vtp ...' command that shows you what the current config-revision value is but it is there. Also, be aware that a VTP CLIENT can send out VTP updates and wipe out your VLAN database config. IE: A quick-fix is not to change from Server to client mode. VLAN1 is where the server is also connected to. I do Telnet from any other VLAN: Telnet takes a long time, then it times out. That tells me it is something in the InterVLAN routing. What would be the next step to troubleshoot the problem ? I look into the Cat 5000 configuration but I can't see any relevant changes that caused the problem. TAC Update [7:34115]
Just wanted to let you guys know if you haven't seen this: The new "Hardware Troubleshooting Index" page on the Cisco Technical Assistance Center (TAC) Web Site brings you a suite of documents that can help prevent downtime due to unnecessarily replacing the most common routers, switches, and modems. Organized by Cisco platform, the resources on the "Hardware Troubleshooting Index" page help you determine if a problem is due to hardware failure. If you do have a hardware problem, these documents further assist in pinpointing the exact component that needs to be replaced. Troubleshooting documents are available for the following products: * Cisco AS5200 and AS5300 Series universal access servers * Cisco Modem ISDN Channel Aggregation (MICA) modems * Cisco 1600, 2600, 3600, 6400, and 7200 Series routers * Cisco uBR7200 Series and uBR7246 VXR universal broadband routers * Cisco 7500 Series routers, route switch processors (RSPs), and versatile interface processors (VIPs) * Cisco CVA120 and uBR900 Series cable modems * Cisco Catalyst(R) 2900XL/3500XL Series switches * Cisco Catalyst 5500/5000/2926G/2926 Series switches * Cisco Catalyst 2948G-L3/4908G-L3 Series switches * Cisco Catalyst 6000 Series switches * Cisco Gigabit Switch Router (GSR) 12000 Series line cards * Catalyst 6500/6000 Multilayer Switch Feature Card (MSFC1 and MSFC2) Keep your downtime to a minimum with the new "Hardware Troubleshooting Index" page: http://www.cisco.com/tac/newsflash/hardware_troubleshoot_013102.html Sincerely, Cisco Technical Assistance Center Message Posted at: http://www.groupstudy.com/form/read.php?f=7&i=34115&t=34115 -- FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

SNMP process [7:28068]
on our core router, every once in a while we will drop some telnet connections. When this happens I look at "show proc cpu" and see that overall util is 89% in which 69% of that traffic is snmp. Obviously this is not good. The router is a 7507. Anyone have any suggestions on this? This is to confirm your seat in the following course: Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) Starting on November 26, 2001 Length of class: 5 days Prereq: A good understanding of the operation and configuration of Interior Routing Protocols especially EIGRP and OSPF. This class is intended to introduce students to the concepts and configuration of the Border Gateway Protocol and lead students to an understanding of many of the tools and techniques used in more advanced BGP implementations. All of the configurations and labs will be conducted using Cisco Systems routers. This course will be taught by Larry Mobley, who also developed the course. The Cisco equipment will be accessed remotely. All courses start at 9:00 a.m. on the first day of class. Classes end approximately at 5:00 p.m. with an hour for lunch. We are located at 25786 Commerce Drive, Madison Heights, MI 48071 (Northwest of the I-696 and Dequindre intersection, just West of Lincoln Avenue and North off the I-696 Service Drive). For detailed map see attached. In the event that you need to reschedule or cancel your registration for this course, arrangements must be made at least 30 days prior to the class start date to prevent a charge to your company. Brent, I feel like there lab package is worth the money. You can probably get some other items for less but it won't hit you as hard or as much in certain key areas, which I feel is essential...I have numerous study aids but nothing has helped me more than lab scenarios/rack time that kicks my butt...that is the only way it gets drilled in my head. Most people will tell you that their packages are a great addition to your arsenal. Yeah other people have other preferences..but just wanted to tell you what I have had luck with. Also, icmp can not be inspected thru cbac. -Keyur Shah- CCIE# 4799 (Security; Routing and Switching) CSS1,CCNA,CCDA,SCSA,SCNA,MCT,MCSE,MCP+I,MCP,CNI,MCNE,CNE,CNA Hello Computers "Say Hello to Your Future!" http://www.hellocomputers.com Toll-Free: 1.877.794.3556 International: 1.510.795.6815 Eurpoe: +(44)20 7900 3011 Fax: 1.510.291.2250 -Original Message- From: Wright, Jeremy [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Friday, October 19, 2001 2:14 PM To: 'Keyur Shah'; [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: '[EMAIL PROTECTED]' Subject: RE: CBAC Performance Issues [7:23573] well we have a 1000 or so devices and there are a lot of internal telnet sessions going all day...I was thinking about using CBAC on other protocols besides telnet on the internal interfaces and use the extra secutiy features like DOS prevention etc. Was thinking about monitoring telnet and all other connections on the external interfaces. -Original Message- From: Keyur Shah [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Friday, October 19, 2001 4:00 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: CBAC Performance Issues [7:23573] What kind of traffic are you talking about Jeremy?
