RE: VRF lite & multi VRF [7:71691]
VRF Lite and Multi VRF is the same thing. VRF Lite is a way of extending the some of the functionality of the PE to the customer (CE) without turning the router at a customer site into a PE or running MPLS on it and joining the rest of the provider network. So you can create multiple VRF tables on the CE. A simple example might be 3 companies that are in the same office space, and they want a MPLS VPN service, yet each single company might not be willing to purchase a CE on their own... by implementing VRF Lite, the single CE would allow to build separate virtual router/routing table for each customer, yet share the same access circuit/PE. hope that helps - Paul Message Posted at: http://www.groupstudy.com/form/read.php?f=7&i=71762&t=71691 -- FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I have had similar problems with yahoo before too. So the QoS you would apply only gets applied to your router's WAN interface. There might be 10 FR switches in between your 2 routers, and none of them can prioritize because it cannot distinguish traffic. With MPLS, you can do QoS even within the cloud because for example, if you set your VOIP to be prec 5 and require high priority, your MPLS cloud (routers) can tell the difference and will treat your prec 5 traffic better (if the provider has it congiured this way). That is the key difference. RE: MBGP/MPLS VPN question [7:64036]
Whether you use Private or Public really does not matter. The provider will create a specific VPN just for you and this will not have any effect on the global routing table of your provider. And even if it did, the whole idea of public networks are address unique to you on the public network so no one besides you should be using it. Originally before the MPLS VPN came about, you had to use a public address/networks to peer with your provider at layer 3(for example the internet or similar), but by using rfc 2547 VPN, you are allowed to use private networks (like your Frame Relay network) if you want to... So kind of combining the positive features of both layer 2 and layer 3 VPN technology. - Paul Message Posted at: http://www.groupstudy.com/form/read.php?f=7&i=64317&t=64036 -- FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

RE: Telnet to 2501 through a linksys router [7:62654]
Jason, I am kind of confused, how can you allow telnet to both your sun box and router at the same time from the outside? Do you have multiple addresses on your WAN side? If you are saying you are already inside your lan, and from the sun box, telnet into your router and it works ok.. then I would assume that somehow, your router cannot/or dont know how to fwd packets outside your internal lan. Can you post the config? I have a linksys and 2511 behind it also. Do you have a default gateway on your cisco router, and is it pointing to the linksys router? - Paul Message Posted at: http://www.groupstudy.com/form/read.php?f=7&i=62671&t=62654 -- FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: MPLS images for 7200? 2500? [7:60284]
Chuck, It definitely is an unsupported image. It is an image that Cisco created internally for some testing only. Most of people at Cisco don't even know the image exists.. I know, I even opened a TAC ticket to locate this image and they told me that it did not exist even though I specifically mentioned I heard it was a testing version only. SAP database latency requirement?? [7:57062]
All, Has anyone supported SAP database/application in your network or customer network? If so, what is the general standard in latency requirement to make this work properly. I am hearing that possibly Meta Group has put out some results that says the requirement to run SAP is 200 ms RTD or less... I don't know much about SAP, except it does require low latency, however that seems to be extremely low. VoIP in genrall requires 150 ms one way or 300 ms RTD to work without much issues, so does SAP require shorter latency than VoIP? I could not get much info from the SAP web site on this, if anyone ever had experience, any assistance would be greatly appreciated. thanks, Paul Message Posted at: http://www.groupstudy.com/form/read.php?f=7&i=57062&t=57062 -- FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: Tag-switching and MPLS interface commands [7:56372]
I believe the main difference between the two is that tag-switching ip turns on TDP which is Cisco proprietary and MPLS IP turns on LDP which is the open standard everyone adopted after Cisco came up with tag switching I think each are implemented slightly differently but both are basically used to distribute label information in the network. The only thing I can recall at this moment is that they use different tcp port numbers but that is about it. I am not sure why turning on mpls ip would show the tag-switching ip in the configuration. - Paul http://www.convergedigest.com/tutorials/mpls2/page1.htm Dennis Laganiere wrote: Does anybody know the differences between the the interface commands "tag-switching ip" and "mpls ip" (or better yet, have a good URL for it)? Hello all, I guess it is my turn to make my announcement. I got my number this past weekend in RTP. #8960 This was my first attempt and thankfully, my last attempt for this track. I would especially like to thank Brian Dignan, CCIE #8248. He was a tremendous help in getting me ready to pass the first time. My company actually promised me 100% support for CCIE training when I got on board but the past 2 years, I ended up without any of the promised training. So I needed to prep with my own fund (meaning, I had to ask my wife for the money) :-) and I needed a lot of help on many subjects that I normally don't deal with every day. Especially on DLSW, TR and IPX. Brian took the time to explain these technologies and made the complex topics, easier to understand. I believe Stan earlier has already mentioned that Brian has started teaching his own Cisco and lab prep classes in the DC metro area. I also recommend Brian 100%. Anyone that would like to reach Brian can do so at - [EMAIL PROTECTED] As far as the books, I mainly used the same books as others, Bruce Caslow's book, Doyle 1 and 2 and CCIE practical studies. And Halabi book for BGP. RE: WAN Switching [7:34035]
Also, the big question is, who is going to keep buying stratacom switches in the future? If Cisco thought that the demand for this product was huge, I do not think they would have cancelled the program. I have heard some reasons why the CCIE track was cancelled was due to the fact that even people working on the switches could not gain access to the equipment, just for the lab purpose. But why cancel the NP/NA track. Probably, people that needed these boxes already have it. They already either have more than they need for future expansion or since big chunk of the customers were telcos, they are in bad financial shape or going out of business. Lucky for me, I only got the the CCNA-Wan part before they cancelled the program. I have other buddies that actually work on our backbone and they went through to NP. And then it was cancelled. Now they are all studying routers. - Paul Message Posted at: http://www.groupstudy.com/form/read.php?f=7&i=34263&t=34035 -- FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
RE: WAN Switching [7:34035]
Hey Mike, What do you think about the future of the stratacoms? My friends and I have been discussing it back and forth. Is the demand going to be there for this product in the future or what? Even on the new C/S CCIE track, you only get the written portion as an option for WAN stuff but in the lab, no stratacoms either. What do you guys use the Stratacoms for at work? Especially if you guys are running this product as a normal consumer/business and not as a telco. thanks, Paul Message Posted at: http://www.groupstudy.com/form/read.php?f=7&i=34157&t=34035 -- FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

RE: Cisco WAN Certifications [7:28615]
Yup, it is retiring. First, they retired the WAN CCIE and now, they have finished off the rest. Not sure how valuable this cert really is now days. As far as replacement, not really sure if they will really come out with anything to replace it. The new C/S CCIE's written portion can be taken with the WAN switching option from what I hear. I think 50% of the test is general and is the same and the last 50% can be chosen among many different options and WAN switching is supposed to be one of them. Still, in the lab, no WAN switching equipment. just routers and lan switches. RE: Latency on the local access circuit [7:26263]
Hi Alex, This site has another router connection back to the hub so this PVC is not being used at this moment except for testing. I have no fecn/becns. I have the CIR set at 128K on the network portion. No discards within the cloud. in fact, within the network, it is around 70 ms between stratacom to stratacom. But between the router to router ping, it is very abnormally high. The hub site has other PVCs exiting to other routers and they all work ok. Just this particular one. It seems that something locally must be changed. Bad thing is I have to rely on many intermediaries to get answers and get things done. Latency on the local access circuit [7:26263]
Hi All, I am having issues with a remote router we turned up overseas.. The router is working fine and the local access circuit test from the local telco comes back clean but, I am getting ping times on a normal 100 byte packet of around 170ms - 220ms. Similar type of connections all fall within around 70ms or so on this type of pings, but on this one, it is much higher. Has anyone had any issues similar where you had 100ms + added onto a ping time by the local access circuit? This is frame relay network and the problem site is a remote site. On the hub router, 1 - all other connections are fine. 2 - I have control of the frame relay switches and RTD within the network is about 50ms, and usually in this type of scenario, I get another 20ms + or so added to the ping router to router for the local access circuits. 3 - Already checked the traffic shaping statements on the PVCs. 4 - Already checked the parameters on the frame switch for any wrong parameters on the switches. This is a complete FR PVC. 5 - I see no errors on the remote side's serial interface, or do I see any errors on the port of the switch. My next step is to put a ticket out for the local techs to swap out the CSU/DSU and the cables... And maybe they are not working 100% or they introduced cables that might not be standard. Has anyone had problems like this? thanks, Paul Message Posted at: http://www.groupstudy.com/form/read.php?f=7&i=26263&t=26263 -- FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I plan on getting it myself, like many other people on this forum, but how closely is this related to the real lab? What I mean is, are these labs supposed to help you try and get ready for the real lab test? Which brings out the next point, it is ok for Cisco to come out and break NDA but not ok for others to talk about the lab? :-) Cisco is probably saying, this book is the best to prepare for the lab because who can help you prepare for the lab better than the people that bring you the test http://www.booksamillion.com/ncom/books?d=2042240383686&pid=1587200023 lab ccie wrote: > > Finally cisco press comes with this book for $70 ,why the > hdid they do it b 4 ? > > In-depth study and exercises for the CCIE Routing and Switching > Lab ExamCCIE Practical Studies, Volume I focuses on the 1-day > lab portion of the exam, largely regarded as the most difficult > portion of the CCIE testing process. I remember opening a ticket some time ago where I was trying to reference some issue to an older TAC ticket, saying that this is still happening and the last time, you guys gave me no real solution. Gave the guy the old TAC number. Well, I get a reply back from TAC and the answer was the exact same answer as the first original TAC ticket, with the same spelling and grammatical errors as the first one. The only thing different about this answer was the name of the TAC engineer at the bottom. Re: ATM/FR Interworking [7:24190]
Well, good luck on getting your service straightened out. Frame and ATM internetworking is relatively new so lots of tweaks have to be done. including on the provider end. We are trying to tweak some parameters now for some of our customers running the same type of service. But as far as your service, it looks like yours is working ok and you are just trying to get the best paremeters configured on the routers. RE: ATM/FR Interworking [7:24190]
I believe in this case, your ATM SCR = FR CIR in the network, so if you set it at 384PCR 384SCR on the router, then you are telling the router to push the traffic and treat this PVC as a 384K pipe. At the same time, your FR side and the provider network sees traffic coming in at 384, but it knows that the CIR is really 192K, so anything above that, it marks DE. I believe if the traffic is not being pushed too long at the increased rate, there is a good chance it will carry most of your traffic, however if you keep the traffic at this speed consistently high, beyond the SCR/CIR that your network is expecting, eventually the PVC's buffer might/will eventually get filled up in the network and might discard. So it might be a good idea to try to keep your SCR at the prescribed limit that your provider is setting within its network. Out of curiosity, who is your provider and what type of equipment are they using? RE: Static default routes [7:23534]
Oops, I read your question wrong earlier... as far as the most amount of 0.0.0.0 route, I have put 6 in for the 6 T1s that a customer was using for their internet service. They wanted to get a T3 in but because of various reasons at the lec, they could not for quite sometime, so 6 T1s were put in to compensate for the lack of 1 T3 temporarily. The only thing that I could not figure out how to do was, where to put the maximum path statement. Normally, from my understanding, we put it under a routing protocol to make the default load bal of 4 paths to 6, but could not figure out how to do it on static routes since there were no router configuration mode for us to put this under... So we figured on static, it will default to the maximum of 6 and just put the 0.0.0.0 route from the internet gateway router. Most people that are > going to pay > $2,000 for training want the equipment in front of them to > touch and feel it Hi Richard, I agree with what you are saying, but If I may add a little to the discussion, I think some additional factor here is that mentor tech did not compensate for the current higher supply and lower demand in the field. If we compare a few years ago (Let's just say 1.5 years ago), the money from IT was being spent like crazy and the demand was high for the Cisco techs and cisco certs were being pushed by consulting groups. (I am hoping it still is or will be) :-) At this time from the supply side - 1 - few places that were selling remote labs or training equipment, so lower amount of access to proper training equipment. 2 - shortage of ccie and ccnp training materials available on a wide scale, or at least, lot less than what it is today. And during this period, companies were paying for everything... But today, basically a big chunk of corporate budget is frozen, thus people are forced to spend their own money for lot of this training. And 4,500+ dollars for a week's worth of training is a lot to come up with out of personal funds.. I am not saying it is not worth it, but just in today's economy where training might have to be paid for by your own personal fund, 4500 dollars is a lot. Also, now for VLabs, again, few years back, fewer places offered online remote racks. But today, more places are popping up and offering the usage of the full rack from 8 - 24 hours at a lot lower cost then just a year ago. In addition, routers and switches are being bought and resold over ebay just for home labs so people can study for their ccna/da/ie. Lot more of this is happening today then a few years ago. So the need for someone to get vlabs and pay 70-110 dollars for a specific module of lab is a lot less. Granted you have to supply your own lab scenarios but over time, I think it is more economical to either buy your equipment and resell it over ebay or rent a remote rack at places like ipexpert, ccbootcamp and such. Honestly, you cannot just do the lab once, you have to come back and do it a few more times but now, are you going to have to pay 70 dollars again to do something that you did a few weeks ago?? And if this was the trend, maybe mentor tech should have seen it coming and lower some of the prices and readvertise their new pricing structure and compete with other firms offering lower cost training and access to the online racks. As you have mentioned, I think a good chunk of it can be done at home and then we can rent the rack space periodically to do some of the more complex labs.. RE: IPExpert Lab Study Guide Feedback [7:23425]
I will post what I asked chuck about it earlier.. if you have not seen it yet. - Author: Chuck Larrieu (Mailing List Post) Date: 10-18-01 10:53 there are several good sources for Lab prep material now. NLI / Bootcamp, Fatkid, and the one sold through Cert Zone. NLI is comprehensive. Their older Labs contain a lot of obsolete material, but this does not diminish their value. NLI would like you to rent rack time from them, but many of their labs can be done in a typical home lab. Fat Kid Labs seem to be more topic specific, rather than comprehensive in nature. But they are worth looking at. Fat Kid has very reasonable rental rates, but most of their stuff can be done at home. IP Xpert builds their labs around a large pod, and their model is that they rent you rack time at reasonable rates to do their labs. One can jigger the setup, and get a lot of the stuff done on a home lab. It comes down to where you want to spend your dollars. In terms of cost, Fat Kid is the least expensive and NLI is the most expensive. But the cost of the study material is about that of a 2501 on an auction site. Your cost for setting up a home lab will be far and away more expensive than any materials you buy. These days, the study materials available are excellent. the major differences between NLI and IP Xpert are in the presentation ( several sheets stapled together versus a nicely bound book ) the presence or absence of obsolete topics ( NLI has been around a lot longer, and has legacy material which can be skipped ) some cosmetic presentation things like color diagrams nicely done on Visio versus hand sketched. Seems to me I'm forgetting somebody. Solutions Experts or something? I'll have to dig around. Oh yeah, and Vlab. Re: IP unnumbered [7:21794]
I think a lot of the ISPs are doing this for the smaller customers.. For example, we put in on the side, an internet router for a small law firm using MCI and instead of giving us an address for the serial interface, they wanted me to ip unnumber it from ethernet port. Saves them some ip addresses for the serial link... but kinda screws it up for management purposes and then if you are running NAT, I think you might run into some problems there. But then again the customers really dont care as long as the few users can surf the net. What is happening is that RtrA does not know how to route packets to B's ethernet segment. The only route it knows about is it's serial link. RE: frame relay question [7:20609]
How often and how long are the outages? Write down the times that this has happened and call it in and have ATT's Frame Relay group check the path of your PVC to see if there were any network related issues. Things that could have happened are, reroutes, downed trunks, etc... I believe ATT keeps 24 hours worth of logs on the stratacom network so if you see an outage, call it in as soon as possible and have them investigate. Another thing you could ask for is have them reroute your pvc to a different path if a better one is available. I am surprised Symantec still has not updated their source on this yet. The last update from them is at noon and has it listed as low threat. I had to goto antivirus.com to get updates.. I do not take care of the internal network where I am, but after running the sniffer on my PC, I have seen our broadcast traffic increase by about 7 times then normal, mostly due to arp. RE: OSPF over Frame-Relay - Interface-DLCI vs. Map [7:18917]
When you are using frame relay on a physical interface or p2m subintf, Map statement tells the router which PVC/DLCI to use when sending packets to a destination ip address. for example, frame map ip 10.10.10.1 200 frame map ip 20.20.20.1 201 These statements tell the router that to send packets to 10.10.10.1, use the PVC that is configured for DLCI 200. But, To get to 20.20.20.1, this time, send the packet to the PVC that is configured to 201. These statements are there because unlike a true point to point serial interface, you actually have multiple logical connections (PVCs) on this 1 physical interface. Because of this, you need to help the router distinguish which PVC should be used to get to one of the many remote sites. Now when you use a subinterface, what happens is that the router configures a logical interface, under the physical interface that is treated like a point to point serial link. In this type of of situation, you do not need to do any map statements because, in theory, there can be only one remote end router. Compared to when you just use the physical interface and have 5 PVCs terminated on the physical. The only additional thing you have to do on the subintf is that you use the interface dlci xxx command under the p2p subintf to tell it which DLCI this subintf belongs to. If you want to do a comparison, we can use a common telephone. you have 1 phone line coming into the house into 1 phone. Even though you have only 1 phone/phone line(physical serial interface), by utilizing the different phone numbers, you can call many different people because for each diff phone number(DLCI), phone and the phone company will create a logical/virtual connection(PVC) to the other phone... so instead of saying frame map ip 10.10.10.1 200, we have phone map john 555.1212 phone map bill 555.2525, which means, to talk to john on the phone, use the number 555.1212 And later, what you do is just run a single line (p2p subintf) to john's house direct and you run a single phone line to Bill's house direct. In this situation, all you need to do is just mark (intf dlci xxx) somewhere on the phone line which of the phone lines goes to john's and which one goes to Bill's. hope this helped and I did not ramble on stuff that did not make sense. RE: Frame Relay - Behind The Scenes... [7:18653]
Hi, You are not going to see anything until the provider activates the frame relay port that you are tied into. >From your description, all that has happened is that the lec came out and install a local access circuit to your provider. If you have configured your serial int for frame relay, it will send out a lmi status request to the frame switch. Once your proivder activates the frame port, it will see the request and then reply back with a lmi status. If they have not turned up the port, all your router will do is send out the request but it will not get back anything, thus.. you will not see anything new on the router. RE: FECN/BECN below a CIR [7:18444]
Hi, All a fecn/becn is a threshold that the provider sets at a certain limit to trigger these messages when they have a certain amount of traffic on the network. Different providers set these threshold at different levels. The fecn/becn does not mean anything will be dropped, only the DE packets generally can be dropped if the network needs to drop anything. Let me set up a hypothetical example using the number 50 and 100 packets. Just using these numbers to make it easier to explain. Let's say you buy service from Provider A and Provider B. Both are the same CIR/PIR and everything about their network is exactly the same. Let us say that the providers guarantees that they will always send 50 packets a second. also, let us say that they will send up to 100 packets a second if the bandwidth is available but they will be marked DE. And let us say you avg a hypothetical continuous 65 packets a second and both providers have plenty of room to keep giving you the ability to burst up to 100 packets/sec. However, provider A sets the fecn/becn threshold at 60 and provider b sets it at 70. >From A, you will always get fecn and becn messages and from b, you will not because it never reaches the 70 threshold. That is it. From both providers, you always run the risk of having any packets from 51-100 dropped but that has nothing to do with the fecn/becn bits. But by looking at the fecn/becns, we get an illusion that provider a has more congestion on their network then provider b even though you are getting the same exact service. hope this helps, Paul Message Posted at: http://www.groupstudy.com/form/read.php?f=7&i=18523&t=18444 -- FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
RE: CCNP Study Material [7:18473]
Well, I do not have exp with the virtual trainer, but I have seen both Sybex and Cisco Press books. Cisco Press is by far the better book with more in depth info. Problem might be that it is not as easy to read as sybex. Sybex is easy to read but is not a complete prep for the exams, at least in my opinion. Sybex is almost like the exam cram book. My suggestion is if you can get both, use the cisco press as the major learning tool and then use the sybex as a review book 1 week before the exam. RE: Frame relay switch question [7:18318]
On R3, Global config command of - frame-relay switching then on each serial interface of the frame switch, you need to configure some parameters. For example : interface Serial0 no ip address encapsulation frame-relay clockrate 64000 frame-relay lmi-type ansi frame-relay intf-type dce frame-relay route 101 interface Serial1 111 These statement basically states that this interface is now working as a frame relays switch interface (DCE) and that it will propagate DLCI 101 towards the router. Any info coming is to this DLCI will be switched out to serial 1 and DLCI 111 on that Serial 1 interface and some other basic stuff as clockrate on this interface and such... Re: tough VPN question [7:16739]
Is WINs configured correctly for the clients? I am assuming that the clients were added to the domain before you started having problems. Can you add another wks to the domain?
