Switch 1900 version V9.00.03 (HELP, HELP, HELP)

2000-09-14 Thread Juan Blanco

Team,
There is a problem with the switch 1900 IOS version V9.00.03, These
switches are taking a very long time to keep in memory the new settings in
particular the VTP TRANSPARENT setting. At this moment the only solution is
to configure the switch at the customer site and be aware that if the
customer power off the switch the configuration will be erase. We called
the CISCO and they are aware of the problem but not solution.

2001-03-03 Thread Shane Stockman

I am going to connect a cable from the telco's chrono directly to the PRI
module on the 3640. I need the pinouts for the cable from the chrono to the
port.I am using cat5 cable.

This is what I have found but I am unsure whether it is correct to use as I
don't want to blow the module port.

Pinouts
Telco Chrono PRI Module DB15
1 TX Tip>9 TX Tip
2 TX Ring >2 TX Ring

4 RX Tip>8 RX Tip
5 RX Ring >15 RX Ring

I think this would be 120-Ohm balanced connection.

2000-10-04 Thread Study Cisco

Hi

I am facing one strange problem with my WAN. I have 5
branches connected via leased line ( 2Mb ). Previously
they were 64 Kb. Now I have added WIC card in all
router (Cisco 3640). The connectivity is as follows

  SiteA-SiteB-SiteC-SiteDSiteE
   | |
   | |

Site A-B = SiteB-C = SiteC-D = 2Mb.
SiteD-E = SiteA-E = 64Kb.

SiteA to siteE and SiteD to SiteE are connected via 64
Kb and rest of them are via 2 Mb. The 2Mb between Site
B-C is new to 2 Mb. I have not use any QoS on my
router interfaces. It is set to FIFO queueing. I have
not appiled any filtering or any application level QoS
on any of router. I have implemented EIGRP on all
router as routing protocol.

The kind of problem I am facing are as follows
1. The uucp can not copy between SiteB-C any data
between servers using uucp ( on new 2 Mb link ). But
other all TCP services work without any problem. So I
shifted from uucp to ESMTP for mail server to
communicate between site B-C.

2. And recently I am facing new problem of .doc and
.xls file are not getting transfered on the same link.
when I use simple FTP on the same new link between
SiteB-C. It can not transfer any data of .doc or .xls
of even 10kb file size. But at the same time parallely
I am able to transfer any other data of 20 Mb of other
file format. But at the same time I am able to attach
the .doc and .xls file to mails and send them across
same link.

I am totally confused with the kind of problem I am
facing since it doesnt seems logical.

So can any one help me in this ..
Thanks in adv.

HELP! Frame Relay HELP! [7:12632]

2001-07-17 Thread Ray Smith

I was doing one of the frame relay labs from Hutnik's CCIE lab books and did
not understand the following:-

1. Why is it that I could only ping from Router-A to Router-B and
vice-versa, but can not ping their own interfaces?

2. Why is the routing protocol (RIP in this case) configured on Router-A but
not on Router-B, yet I was still able to ping accross end-to-end?

Can someone out there explain this to me? Thanks

You don't need a routing protocol to ping a directly connected neighbor ip
address on the same subnet. Inverse arp should of taken care of the layer-2
to layer-3 mapping. As for your own interface add a frame map command for
your own interface and it will work.

Yes, at the next reload but not until then. But.if you have frame-relay

IPSec help

2001-01-31 Thread Ricky Gomez

Hey all, I'm trying to implement IPsec in my existing network but we are
using NAT. In order for the Encapsulating Secure Payload (ESP) and
Authentication Header (AH) protocol to exit out my network the packet cannot
be modified, in which it is being modified due to Network Address
Translation (NAT), so the connection is terminated.

Does anyone know what appliance I need to invest in, in order to make this
work?

I hope that you have got the null modem cable , if you don't please get
that and connect that to the WAN port on both of the routers , one of it
will be DCE on which the clock rate has to be configured and the other will
act as a DTE for simulation purpose , assign the IP address to both of the
interface and try to ping at each other and at any other interface .

thats it , all the best .

RE: Help!

2001-02-28 Thread Rizzo Damian

It's relatively easy. For example if you wanted to simulate a Frame Relay
connection between the two routers via a DCE/DTE cable, you would configure
your routers as stated below;

Router 1 (the DCE end, provides clock at 64Kb, "clockrate 64000")

   interface Serial1

   no ip address

   encapsulation frame-relay

   clockrate 64000

   no keepalive

   interface Serial1.1 point-to-point

   ip address 131.108.177.164 255.255.255.0

   frame-relay interface-dlci 26 broadcast

  Router 2

   interface Serial0

   no ip address

   encapsulation frame-relay

   no keepalive

   frame-relay intf-type dce

   interface Serial0.1 point-to-point

   ip address 131.108.177.166 255.255.255.0

   frame-relay interface-dlci 26 broadcast

 -Thats it. Hope this helps.

The best free information is the Cisco web site. Read the certification
requirements - then look up the answers. You will be much stronger for doing
so. For subnetting try this:

VPN help

2000-09-26 Thread Lakeman, DerrickX

I have a client that has a small office of 3 computers (all running Windows
2000 Pro networked together via Ethernet)(Site A). One of the Windows 2000
Pro computers at his office acts as the 'server' and has a DSL line
connected to it. He has a computer (Windows 95) in his mother's home running
DSL (Site B), one in his home running DSL (Windows 95)(Site C), and a
traveling laptop with a 56K modem (Windows 9x)(Site D). My understanding is
Windows 2000 Pro doesn't support VPN so... What hardware and/or software
product is best for creating a VPN over the internet? What server products
and what client products are best?

Thank you,

Dirk Lakeman

2000-10-06 Thread Study Cisco

Hi

Yes I pinged with 1500 buffer size and it pinged
properly As I told you in my 1st mail. If I start ftp
simultaneously .doc (10 Kb) and any other format file
for example a inbox file (20 Mb). The doc file doesnt
gets transfered but the other file goes to
destination. I tried this in various conditions ( with
zero load also etc.) & Platforms (NT / Unix). But it
didnt helped me.

On my serail interface I hav following config. this
may help you
***
Serail 0
ip address 20.15.1.1 255.255.255.252
no ip route-cache
no ip mroute-cache
no fair-queue
bandwidth 2048
***
Same config I have on opposite router serail
interface.

RE: Help!!!!!!!!!

2000-10-06 Thread dacarl4

The routers either forward the packet or they don't, right? They don't care
if it is a word document or an excel spreadsheet. The router deals with
Layer 3 and could care less about the higher layer protocols (unless you
have configured ACL's to filter such things).

To rule out the carrier as the problem see If you are able to ping reliably
across the WAN with 1500 byte packets. Then change the bit pattern (using
extended ping) to 0x and 0x that would test the all ones and all
zero's integrity. Once you do all of that and the pings get through then
you can "probably" rule out the carrier.

Just a thought, but you haven't changed the MTU on any of the interfaces
have you? You want to make sure they are the same on both sides. Also I
would recommend running Fair-queuing on the 64k links. That will aid in the
interactive traffic getting through when there is a large FTP or SMTP mail
with an attachment trying to get out. As far as the queuing on the 2MB
side, FIFO is probably your best bet since there have been a lot of issues
with fair queuing on larger bandwidth links (T1 and above usually).

Sorry I don't have an exact answer for this, but there are a couple of
suggestions on troubleshooting it. For what it's worth, hope it helps.

the largest 1500 if you only have ethernet, see what happens, and pls let
use know the result.

David,

I am able to ping with data size 100 and bit pattern
0x, but when I change the data size to 1500
with bit pattern 0x I cannot ping the destination.
Is this bcause of carrier problem?

Also I am able to ping with data size of 1500 and bit
pattern of 0x.

Thanks for your help.

Hi,

I'm facing a strange problem with my router (2621),I'have

for fa0/0 : 100.x.x33

for s0/1:  200.x.x.1
for fa0/1 : 200.x.x33

now problem is that: I want my LAN1 traffic go out
by S0/1 interface.
when i try traceroute from LAN1 then it took more
then 600 ms from fa0/0 to s0/1 next hop. the same thing from LAN2 took less then
10ms.

PIX Help

2000-11-09 Thread Austin

I am using a static mapping on the pix for an inside illegal address to an
outside legal address.
I want to allow the inside machine to be pinged from the outside as well as
allow http traffic to that machine.
Lets say the inside address is 10.1.1.5 and the internet legal address is
45.33.20.5
This is what I did:

static (inside, outside) 45.33.20.5 10.1.1.5
conduit permit icmp host 45.33.20.5 any
conduit permit tcp host 45.33.20.5 eq www any

I cannot ping the inside machine from the internet with this config.
Please help.

Thanks.

2501 help

2001-04-04 Thread jenny . mcleod

Oh boy. What version of IOS are you running - 9.14 or something like that?

>From memory, and this appears to be backed up by my historical copy of the
Router Products command summary for 'software release 9.1' (they didn't use
the term 'IOS' then), that is what you get with an early IOS version. I'm
not sure when it changed - I think in IOS 10.0.

Type 'show version' at the exec prompt (i.e. not while you're trying to
configure the router) and look for the version - second line of output,
probably. If it's 9.something, then you have a very early version of IOS.
You can still do a fair amount of stuff - ospf, igrp, IPX (except it used
novell as the keyword then), rsrb, snmp, x.25... depending on what feature
set you have.
If this is supposed to be a production router, upgrade it. If it's for a
lab, you will rapidly find that you cannot do anything that is faintly
recent (EIGRP, HSRP, etc), and most of the commands in books won't work,
and you will want to upgrade it anyway. Many of the commands have changed
since 9.1.

hi ,

need your help again, it goes this way :

Hi,

Re: High Speed card of cisco router (for Destiny's

Could you verify what would be the exact port we're
going to use for the 4Mbps/512kbps upgrade
1.) a Channelize T3 ?
or
2.)a High-Speed Serial T3 ?

also, will the interface be V.35 from the CM701 going
to the cisco router (7206)?

I've already verified this modem from Destiny/Domsat:
  (2)COMSTREAM MODEMS, HS, V.35, DVB REED-SOLOMON -
with S/N 90077845
(note: as per Domsat, this CM701 sat modem is working
properly)

Does this modem support up to 8Mbps for their
future need?
Do we still need to install or configure a High Speed
card for the 4Mbps/512kbps upgrade ?

thanks

any form of input will be greatly appreciated

thanks

Please Help

2000-08-28 Thread Steve Carson

To all,

I am in need of some help. I have a 3640 router that is new. We got a 4
port ethernet module for it and a Network module that holds 2 WAN
interfaces. Put the ethernet module in and the IOS sees it and everything
is fine. Put the 2-port serial module in and nothing happens. Thought
module was bad so got a replacement today. Inserted the 2 WAN cards in the
new module and placed in router. Still nothing, does not see the WAN cards.
So then i placed the ethernet module in the same slot the WAN module was
in to make sure that slot works and it does. So then I took the 2 WAN cards
out of the module and put them in 2 spare 2600's we have to make sure that
they work, and they do. So this leaves me with this question. Is there
something that I must do to get the 3640 to recognize this Network Module
with the 2 WAN cards in it or by some strange luck did I just get 2 bad
Network Modules and should try and order a 3rd new one.

Thanks for your help

Maybe they are talking about the differences between the fixed config boxes
like the 2501 with say 1 ethernet and 2 sync and the 3640 with 4 blank slots
where you can put all kinds of different netmods in to support
LAN/WAN/VOICE.

Just a logical guess,

Help needed

2000-06-09 Thread Puckett, Larry

Just bought a used 2501 for lab and received copy of working boot screen
with it. But when I boot it up it goes through a slarp and get an ip address
but continues to give message of ' NVRAM invalid due to possible write
erase'. If it doesn't go through slarp it comes to the setup dialog and am
unable to type anything via the console port or the aux port. After the
router slarps , I am able to access the router via aux port but not the
console and I am not able to get into enable mode because there is no enable
password set according to the router. I've tried auto install with a tftp
server to no avail. The configuration register is 2012 and during the boot
sequence I am unable to break into rom monitor or rx boot mode.

Re: Help

2000-07-12 Thread Priscilla Oppenheimer

It doesn't look like a hang. It looks like a normal router startup
sequence. The Token Ring and serial ports are probaby down because they
aren't connected to anything.

You see "Illegal IP keyword" because your config has commands in it that
are newer than the IOS in ROM, but that's OK. The router goes on to boot
from flash which has 11.3 in it.

Seeing the > character when you break into the booting process is normal
too. If you break into the router you just need to then type some commands
to do something, such as "b" to boot.

I may be missing something, but it appears that you may be troubleshooting
a non-problem or that you haven't told us enough about your symptoms.

The sort of topics you are looking for are more likely to be under
corporate security policies, or Acceptable Use Policies, than SLAs.
SLAs tend to be concerned with how fast/reliably something can be

Without checking too deeply...
Try changing BRI 1/1 to associate with dialer rotary-group 2 instead of
rotary-group 1. Your dialer 2 interface isn't being used at the moment.

What you could use is a separate OR double tunnel, for example (some extra
public IP's)

network private

nat (here) to public ip (behind FW=DMZ)

vpn FW ipsec(here) source

vpn FW ipsec dest

nat (here) from public ip to private ip (behind FW=DMZ)

network private

This chapter shines a in-dept light on the topic, and also explains a
pass-trough vpn scenario.

using NAT. In order for the Encapsulating Secure Payload (ESP) and

Authentication Header (AH) protocol to exit out my network the packet cannot

be modified, in which it is being modified due to Network Address

Translation (NAT), so the connection is terminated.

Does anyone know what appliance I need to invest in, in order to make this

work?

RE: IPSec help

2001-01-31 Thread Christopher Larson

This should not be a problem on your side when using ESP. With ESP your
traffic is encapsulated, w/o modifying the original packet, and the firewall
forwards to your peer, where the outer packet is stripped revealing the
original data.

It is the peer that will have a problem as the address you come from will
change as the nat translation changes. The fix for this in the Cisco PIX
environment is to run Dynamic IPSEC lists w/ wild card authentication keys,
or if you are using the host based client software, run IKE mode config on
the side that is recieving data from a NAT'ed peer.

We run multiple IPSEC ESP tunnels to several peers using NAT. We also accept
several tunnels from dial up clients (whose address constantly changes due
to DHCP) using the IKE mode config or wildcard keys and dynamic lists.
AH is a different animal altogether and it does in fact change (or add) to
the datagram. I avoid AH when possible in production environments, so I
cannot comment on it.

Hello all,
I am taking the switching2 exam on the 13th and am
having serious problems "getting" this process.
Does anyone know if there is a decent white paper out there.
I have seen the threads that showed tricks on how to get
a hex from a decimal but it really has not helped me to under-
stand the full process.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Help with Firewall

2001-02-20 Thread Howard Yuan

Hi,

I'm trying to set up a firewall on my Cisco router. I'm trying to block
everything from the Internet except for webpage access (port 80). But, when
I set it up to do that, I can not surf the net without putting in the line:

permit ip any any

But, doing that will allow everything to come in through the router. I
don't want anybody being able to come in through any port except for the
ones I specify. Is there anybody that know how to do that? Please tell me.
Thank you in advanced.

Yeah, a legacy protocol question. I can answer those! &;-)

IPX does fast switching by default. You can limit the number of entries
stored in the IPX route cache to free up router memory and aid router
processing with the "ipx route-cache max-size" command. To further improve
performance, you can also configure the router to invalidate fast-switch
cache entries that are inactive with the "ipx route-cache
inactivity-timeout" command.

Cisco IOS software also supports IPX Multilayer Switching (MLS). For more
information on IPX MLS, refer to the "Multilayer Switching" chapter of the
Cisco IOS Switching Services Configuration Guide:

http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/software/ios121/121cgcr/switch_c/xcprt5/xcdmsipx.htm

There are a bunch of optimization features. Cisco has done a terrific job
dealing with Novell bizarreness for many years.

To reduce routing and SAP traffic, you could use:

* Enhanced IGRP for IPX instead of IPX RIP
* NLSP instead of IPX RIP
* Static routes instead of IPX RIP
* Snapshot routing
* SAP filters

To reduce traffic across a WAN, you could use
* IPX compression
* IPXWAN
* SPX spoofing whereby a local router sends SPX client/server keepalives
instead of requiring keepalives to traverse a WAN
* watchdog spoofing whereby a local router sends NCP client/server
keepalives instead of requiring keepalives to traverse a WAN
* IPX access lists

So, the real question is, of course, what problem are you trying to solve?

Hope this gives you some ideas, though.

Priscilla

Re: IPX Help

Hi,

Yes there is caching 'sh ipx cache'

The main commands to view IPX are:
show ipx servers (this shows the networks and SAP's)
show ipx route (this shows the routes networks to interface)
show ipx interface ## (show the IPX options on interfaces)
show ipx traffic (give useful detail on the routing traffic)
Show ipx cache (I have only used to confirm where stuff is going.)

Just some ideas.

Re: IPX Help

2001-03-19 Thread EA Louie

Issue: bandwidth of SAPs (Service Advertisement Protocol) broadcast over
the WAN - depending on how many IPX services are allowed, it could be a big
hit...although I've never personally seen SAP traffic saturate a decent
bandwidth (128k and above) WAN link, perhaps others here have.

Solution: Filter outbound SAP's at the source router (this may need to be
done at both ends of the WAN circuit depending on the number of servers on
each side. Normally, unless an application or printer needs to be
advertised on the 'other' end of the WAN link, I shut them all down, except
for file services.

Otherwise, the routing tables (same for IPX RIP as IP RIP) are sent over the
WAN link every 90 seconds by default.

I have! (Well, thinking back, maybe it was only 128 K?) SAP stands for
Service Advertising Protocol. Cisco has spelled out the acronym incorrectly
for years.

IPX RIP sends every 60 seconds by default. IP RIP sends every 30 seconds by
default. You're thinking of IGRP when you say IGRP perhaps?

Sorry for being so picky. Your answer is right on!
