Strange Problem.
Hi, Today I got my second leased line and after that I find very strange thing in traceroute command. My IP rages are 45.x.x.x from one ISP 162.x.x.x from second ISP My gateway which is doing NATting in ip range of 45.x.x.x both of my lines are using Static routes. Protocols are PPP & HDLC respectively. I add a static route to my router ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 162.x.x.x That mean all the traffic should use 162.x.x.x link. then I used traceroute command to my next hop of 162.x.x.x from router console then it took less then 15ms to reach there. But when I used traceroute command to my next hop of 162.x.x.x from my LAN then it took more then then 700ms to reach that hop. what could be the reason of that. TIA Gm

Hi, I'm facing a strang problem in my network. Suddenly all the computer disapper from the network neghibour hood, but when I ping the system they respond back. After some time all the thing come back to normal. all system then available in the network. What could be the reason for this how i can sort it out. TIA Gm
RE: strange problem
I faced this problem several times... http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/105/21.html --- IP Classless Where the ip classless configuration command falls within the routing and forwarding processes is often confusing. In reality, IP classless only effects the operation of the forwarding processes in IOS; it doesn't effect the way the routing table is built. If IP classless isn't configured (using the no ip classless command), the router won't forward packets to supernets. As an example, let's again place three routes in the routing table and route packets through the router. router#show ip route 172.30.0.0/16 is variably subnetted, 2 subnets, 2 masks D172.30.32.0/20 [90/4879540] via 10.1.1.2 D 172.30.32.0/24 [90/25789217] via 10.1.1.1 S* 0.0.0.0/0 [1/0] via 10.1.1.3 Remembering that the 172.30.32.0/24 network includes the addresses 172.30.32.0 through 172.30.32.255, and the 172.30.32.0/20 network includes the addresses 172.30.32.0 through 172.30.47.255, we can then try switching three packets through this routing table and see what the results are. A packet destined to 172.30.32.1 is forwarded to 10.1.1.1, since this is the longest prefix match. A packet destined to 172.30.33.1 is forwarded to 10.1.1.2, since this is the longest prefix match. A packet destined to 192.168.10.1 is forwarded to 10.1.1.3; since this network doesn't exist in the routing table, this packet is forwarded to the default route. A packet destined to 172.30.254.1 is dropped. The surprising answer out of these four is the last packet, which is dropped. It's dropped because its destination, 172.30.254.1, is within a known major network, 172.30.0.0/16, but the router doesn't know about this particular subnet within that major network. This is the essence of classful routing: If one part of a major network is known, but the subnet toward which the packet is destined within that major network is unknown, the packet is dropped. --- -Original Message- From: suaveguru [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Monday, January 29, 2001 11:40 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: strange problem hi I got a customer who intially has a defautl route that does not work . Is this a Windows environment? IS it happening on one computer or all clients? We encountered the same problem in our network a while ago. Of course assuming that this is an environment that suffers from not having a Push\Pull Wan link over WINS and using a half dead PDC , seems more like a peer to peer problem as I see it , knowing what NOS is involved, and how it's being implemented would make the diagnosis easier. I have seen flaky or corrupt WINS servers cause this exact problem. Install WINS on another server and shut down your existing one. OT: MRTG strange problem
Why would MRTG not pull stats from a switch if all the switches are configured the same? I have 4 switches located in the same location. I can pull data off three of them but not the fourth? any suggestions? Also, can anyone tell me how to configure MRTG to pull data for each individual switch port? Strange problem in AS5300 !!!!!!!
I have already setup an AS5300 with 120 modems. I managed to dial in the access server & get authenticate without activate the "bring up terminal after dialing". Why i can conform that is bcoz i can get the ip address from the ip pool from as5300, also the dns server ip address. If I activate the "bring up terminal after dialing" on dial-up networking, the terminal will show up and let me key-in username & password. once I finished the key-in, then I press "F7" to continue, it straightaway tell me that it can't establish the connection. hopefully you guy can help me out. regards, lee ___ UPDATED Posting Guidelines: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/guide.html FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Strange Problem. [7:60092]
Dear Friends, I have strange problem at hands. I have 2 Serial Sync 64kbps links connecting to 2 different places. The problem is one of the link start dropping packets (after 3 hrs) moment both the links are put one ANY ONE router. I used 1751,2511,2610. I also put a different WIC & different cables. I fail to understand what is wrong. The Service provider tells he seen no problems in the link (when complained and asked to run his tests on the links.). Has anyone faced such a problem before??? Any help is appreciated. Re: OT: MRTG strange problem
the cfgmaker should automatically make a mrtg.cfg file of all the active interfaces on a switch. Otherwise, it will REM them out as inactive. Uncomment the lines in your mrtg.cfg file to monitor all the ports. My only explanation why it won't pull info from the fourth switch is maybe a misconfigured SNMP community string. An off the top suggestion would be that the two links are load balancing? When one dies the other tries to carry all the traffic but by itself the bandwidth is saturated? Re: Strange problem, Pls help
Regarding your problem, Gary, just get on the phone with that ISPs tech support and don't let the engineer off the line until they've removed the filter. I had to battle an engineer at UUNET to get him to double-check their filters as my Sprint blocks weren't getting seen through their AS. When he finally did, he found a few problems, and once corrected I could seem them at cerf & oregon (which, btw, are great BGP looking-glass resources): telnet://route-views.oregon-ix.net telnet://route-server.cerf.net -- Jason Roysdon, CCNP+Security/CCDP, MCSE, CNA, Network+, A+ List email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Homepage: http://jason.artoo.net/ Cisco resources: http://r2cisco.artoo.net/ ""Gary Crouch"" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote in message [EMAIL PROTECTED]">news:[EMAIL PROTECTED]... > I have the same problem at my site we are using BGP routing and when the link > to our ISP thats provides us with the IP blocks goes down traffic goes out the > other ling but tries to return on the down link because our bgp routes are be > filter by the other provider that has agried to advertise them. > > What protocols are you using? > > > >>> Gunjan Mathur <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> 04/01/01 10:49PM >>> > Hi, > I hve 2621 router and tow WAN links are terminating on > that, my proble is this is one of my wan link goes > down then second link drop the packets. > What colud be the reason of that. > > ravi > > __ > Do You Yahoo!? > Get email at your own domain with Yahoo! It looks to me like you are having some AAA problems. I would need to see several lines of your config to help you more. You could be maintaining a userlist on the AS5300, using TACACS+ or Radius. I have working configs for both TACACS+ and Radius. Post your aaa configs lines and any lines that pertain to TACACS+, Radius and let me know if you have local AS5300 users but do not post because the level 7 passwords can be hacked so you could open your self up to more problems. Strange problem with Cisco 2501 routers
Hi Folks, I have a few Cisco 2501 routers all eith the same startup problem. On startup, the routers behave normal, but after the "Press RETURN to get started" message, the routers come up with errors about the ethernet and serial interfaces, restarts and then hang up completely. Thinking that the problem may be with the DRAM, Flash or software, I have replaced these with ones from other Cisco 2501 routers in good working condition, but the problem remained the same. The typical output from these routers is as shown at the end of this posting. Any good ideas will be appreciated. Thank you. Strange Problem with router... [7:6293]
Hi, I am facing a strange problem from last two days. One of my 3640 router is behaving in a strange manner. Sudenly it is becoming 60 - 99 % CPU utilization.(Usally 20 - 30 %) at the same time It is droping the output packets on Main Serial link (which is using for uplink/downlink) and input packets on fastethernet (Used for LAN) port. Even these Interfaces are not overloading.. On the same router I am having 17 more serial links, and 1 more fast ethernet, and one ethernet interfaces and all are in working. I am using wccp v1, and BGP also on the same router. After Observing the problem I did the following things. 1) Increased the hold-queue to 4096 2) stopped the wccp and observed the status. But there is no use. It behaved in the same pasion. So I kept the things back. I am wondering.. if anybody help me.. The traffic is same and not varying.. but it is very much flutuating.. Please give me suggestions.. if anybody have any idea.. Thanks, Kiran PS: The router is not giving this problem continuously.. for 2 mins.. its working properly.. next 2 or 3 mins.. dropping the packets.. and next 2 mins.. working properly.. Re: Strange problem with Cisco 2501 routers
The only startup errors evident in this output is this: > Unknown or ambiguous service arg - udp-small-servers > Unknown or ambiguous service arg - tcp-small-servers > Illegal IP keyword - classless You're probably seeing this because you are running IOS 11.1(7), but your config is pasted in from a router running at least 11.2. 11.1(7) apparently doesn't understand these lines: service udp-small-servers service tcp-small-servers ip classless You can upgrade your IOS or remove those lines from your config. The status messages about the interfaces are not strange in any way. They look quite normal, assuming the ethernet port was connected to something but the serial ports were not. You're right, but I think he is talking about the UPDOWN messages. This could be due to a "shutdown" line in each interface, but it would help to see the configuration. RE: Strange problem with Cisco 2501 routers
Do you have a TFTP server on the segment maybe with a file net-conf? It could be pulling a bad configuration file from a tftp server. Also it might be trying to pull a IOS image from a TFTP server that is not there. It might have a boot system tftp command in the config. I assume you just got these and you are experiencing the problem. Try going into ROM mode and change the Configuration register to ignore the start up config file (confreg 0x142). reload the router and see what the config look like. I have a feeling it is looking for something off a TFTP server. If you want you can make a copy of the config and then do a write erase. Change back the Config Register to 0x2102 (Router#config-reg 0x2102). Reload the router and see if you get the same error. continuation : Strange Problem with router... [7:6295]
I checked the buffers, there are buffer failures, in the router.. I think this could be because of that particular moment processor might be overloaded so it might not allocate the time for buffer allocating.. It was fine, and no problems with the same router and same interfaces.. but the problem arised only for last two days.. Any ideas to overcome this problem.. thanks, Kiran On Wed, 30 May 2001, Kiran Kumar M wrote: > > Hi, > > I am facing a strange problem from last two days. yup. thats going to happen when you plug that many serial links into the 3640. look at the mtu, look at your pps, and look at the 2640's forwarding capabilities. i have a cusdtomer who's 2640 freaks out the same way with 8 t-1s coming into it... Hi Peter, Thanks for your mail. But I was using the same for last 16 months, almost with same setup. I never faced this problem. mtu is default, pps it can support upto 40,000 to 70,000 (according to cisco site), in my case it never reached to that point.. Thanks, Kiran On Tue, 29 May 2001, Peter I. Re: Strange Problem with router... [7:6293]
Hi Have you changed anything in the network of late? With the very little amount of information you have provided (about the network), my first thought is something with SNMP is polling the router at a regular time. There are several SNMP bugs in several versions of the IOS. The last time I was faced with something like this, a edge router was going brain dead (70-99% CPU) every hour on the hour. It required a reboot to get it back. I had recently added a fair amount of NAT and ACLs to the router and thought that was the problem, but it turned out that another admin working on getting Cisco Works up and running had inadvertently put Works on the production network. There was a bug in the IOS on the edge router and when Works polled it, it would hit 70-99% CPU and would have to rebooted. I upgraded the IOS and the problem went a away. Re: Strange Problem with router... [7:6293]
If you are running BGP on 3640 you are bound to have problems. Not that it wont work, but it wont be consistent. Are you running the complete BGP table? Are there any other stuff like NAT or debug running?. What is the memory you have on the router. Recommended router for BGP if you are running full BGP table is 7206 VXR. Strange problem with a 2924XL. [7:63680]
I had a strange problem this evening with a 2924XL. The server attached to port f0/13 had been generating errors and finally the switch stopped talking to it. A shut/no shut combination started everything back up again. The configuration only says to send a trap when a broadcast storm happens. There isn't anything about excessive errors. Any thoughts? I haven't checked CCO. I don't have a good idea what to search for without getting 10,000,000,000 hits. Thanks. Strange problem of route table [7:59533]
Hi all, Can anybody tell me when I add static route to my default network it shows with Administrative distance of 1,whereas we know that static routes to our own interface have AD. of zero. Example C 10.77.152.128/25 is directly connected, FastEthernet1/0 S* 0.0.0.0/0 [1/0] via 10.77.152.129 is directly connected, FastEthernet1/0 Its showing here with administrative distance of 1 the route with default gateway of FastEthernet1/0. Please do clear me where I am wrong Thanx in advance Munit Message Posted at: http://www.groupstudy.com/form/read.php?f=7&i=59533&t=59533 -- FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Very Strange Problem....Any Ideas? [7:59682]
I worked on a network move for a brokerage company last week and encountered a VERY strange problem. We moved a bunch of equipment to a new office building. During the process, we changed the internal network from 192.168.100.0/24 to 172.31.4.0/22. There company has 4 Cisco 3500XL 48 port switches, with no VLANs and plain vanilla configurations. The fanciest thing is portfast on the client machine ports. Switches are linked via GBICs in a cascade. There is one client maintained router that sits before the firewall with only static routes and no routing protocols. There are multiple outside vendor routers for specific applications (real-time quotes, clearinghouse mainframe, etc.), but these too also have only static routes and no routing protocols. After installing all of the network equipment and servers, we started to turn on clients and get new DHCP addresses. Since the new network was 172.31.4.0/22, 172.31.4.1 - 172.31.4.255 was reserved for servers, printers, switches, and routers. The remaining 172.31.5.0 - 172.31.7.254 was reserved for clients...though there are only about 100 clients at the moment and thus they only took 5.0 - 5.100 or so in DHCP. After installing maybe 20 clients or so, we started to see mass slowdowns on the network. Pings between clients and servers were very irregular and intermittent. There was no discernable pattern to when pings would succeed and when they'd fail. We exhaustively went through all devices and made sure that they'd been correctly set to the new mask and that all server functions (DNS, WINS, AD, etc.) had been correctly setup for the new subnet. Everything looked fine. In an effort to troubleshoot, we unhooked the switch stack and put core servers and a few clients on a single switch. Again, communication was irregular and unpredictable, whether with static or DHCP addresses on the clients. Sometimes things would be fine, other times clients could ping the server, but not the switch to which they were attached. Sometimes clients could ping the switch, but not the server. Sometimes the clients could ping neither. Again, there seemed to be no pattern. Thinking there might have been some IOS bug, we erased nvram, upgraded the switches to current IOS code, and put in a completely plain configuration. This had no effect on the problem. After 4 of us (with probably 50 years of industry experience between us) spent 15 hours or so trying to resolve the issue, I finally suggested we try moving the clients from the 172.31.5.x/22 block to the 172.31.4.x/22 block. This solved all problems, and all clients were able to ping both switches and servers 100% of the time. Again, we didn't change the mask on anything, only the third octet of the client ip range. We then went back and triple checked every device attached to the networkservers, routers, switches, printers, clients, etc. Every single device had the correct mask (/22) except for two vendor maintained UNIX boxes...they had 172.31.4.x/24. We suspected as much earlier since clients couldn't communicate with the UNIX boxes from the beginning, but the other servers could communicate with the UNIX boxes without issue. These UNIX servers weren't running RIP(or any other RP)...and besides, there aren't any other network devices listening for RIPso we weren't really concerned about them causing the network connectivity issues. At the time, I couldn't see how a bad mask on these boxes could effectively make the whole network unusable, so I didn't bother correcting it early in the day. At this point, I've had a week to think about the issue and I still don't have a logical reason for why this problem might have occurred. Anyone out there have any thoughts? I'm going back to put in a 3550EMI as the core in a couple of weeks. At that point, we're going to investigate more and try to move the clients back to the 172.31.5.x range. I'd like to test theories at that time if anyone can put one forward that we didn't already testas I said, we spent a lot of time on this and I didn't put every test we did in this email. All I can offer is that it wasn't IOS code (we tried more than one version), it wasn't the switches (we tried several, including non-Cisco), it wasn't DNS, WINS, DHCP, or any other server side issue (we thoroughly examined and ruled those out...beside, this was even happening at the IP level between switches). Everything had worked correctly at the old building...the only two things that changed significantly during the move were the IP range and the building wiring. AND, the wiring in the new building was brand new Cat6...I even dug out the WireScope and verified that the drops passed spec. Thanks! a strange problem in bgp and ospf environment
Hi,there: I'm studying the section of in Halabi's book, But unfortunately, I never get pass. Please watch the topology attached in this mail, The 3640-1,2610, 2501-2 router run bgp protocol, but ospf run between 3640-1 and 3640-2. The question is if I use clear ip bgp * command, the ospf route 192.68.5.0 255.255.255.0 192.68.6.2 will appear in 3640-1's routing table, but after BGP peer established, this route was replaced with BGP route 192.68.5.0 255.255.255.0 172.16.20.2. I know the reason is the distance, but the fact is I have set the command in 3640-1! the BGP route 192.68.5.0 255.255.255.0 172.16.20.2's distance should change from 20 to 200 and that ospf's route should stay in 3640-1's routing table,it cann't be replaced by BGP's route again! SO,I cann't understand completely. Another question: When I use command, then , I can find the route 192.68.5.0 255.255.255.0 192.68.6.2 appeared, but the BGP esatblished, the route then disappeared from the output of the . What's happen ? Thank in advance... STRANGE PROBLEM in updating EIGRP routes [7:37055]
Dear All I am facing a strange problem in 1751 routers. In a simple scenario in which two 1751 are connected with over a channel with serial port and eigrp is used for routing. Router 1 s 0/0 ip addr 192.168.10.1 fe 0/0 ip addr 192.168.1.1 Router 2 s 0/0 ip addr 192.168.10.2 fe 0/0 ip addr 192.168.2.1 both router get the routes of remote LAN and any machine on 192.168.1.0 (R1) network ping all machines on other 192.168.2.0 (R2) network. Configurtion on both routers have been saved. But the Promlem is that when any one of the router reboot/power cycle then it do not send its routes to other router but gets the routes of remote router and also it shows other router as eigrp neighbor. It means that when R1 reload/power cycle then after comleting reload it shows routes of 192.168.2.0 but R2 remote router does not shows route of 192.168.1.0. Eigrp configuration is present on both routers and both routers shows other router as their eigrp neighbor. Both routers shows Eigrp configuraton in sh run configuration To solve this problem, eigrp configuration has to be removed from R1 and reconfigured then it becomes OK. no router eigrp 100 router eigrp 100 network 192.168.10.0 network 192.168.1.0 Is anybody knows about this problem? Is there any bug in IOS? The router configuration is very simple and working perfectly on other 2500 series routers. Hi Ken, What is connecting to this interface...you may want to manually configure the duplex and speed settings on this interface to match that of the device that is connecting to it. RE: Strange problem with a 2924XL. [7:63680]
Check the device that is connected to the port for speed setting and duplex. If possible fix it to one particular setting at both ends. Start low and then build up to 100 full. The errors are usually caused by a mismatch or cabling that cannot handle it. First thing I would do is verify duplex and speed settings and hardcode them for servers. The move the server to another port to see if the problem is still there. If it is, then the switch is ruled out and you need to look at the cabling and NIC -Original Message- From: Ken Diliberto [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 25 February 2003 17:52 To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: Strange problem with a 2924XL. Re: Strange problem of route table [7:59533]
Hi, Static routes can either have the AD of 1 or 0 depending on the way you add them to your router. e.g lates RouterA interface FE0=192.168.0.1/27 and it is connected to RouterB FE1=192.168.0.2/27 & FE3=10.1.0.1/24. To define route to 10.1.0.1/24 on RouterA you have two methods. 1. RouterA# IP route 10.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 192.168.0.2 (AD=1) 2. RouterA#IP route 10.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 FE0 (AD=0) If both commands are entered option 2 will be the prefered route. So you are correct, choose the one you prefer, it also depends whether you want to do load balancing, floating static route, etc... Regards. Re: Strange problem of route table [7:59533]
Hi Godswill, Thanx for reply.I agree with u,but Still the doubt persists if both the commands are used then both entries come to the route table. As per your and mine theory also only better administrative distance should come into the route table, but here both are introduced into the route table ,as it seems it has administrative distance of 1 for default gateway of its own interface(obviosly zero is preffered then one)? Why both entries in route table. As confusion is creating from different answers so please reply ,so that all confusions are over. Re: Strange problem of route table [7:59533]
Hi Munit, Let assume you put both coomands say: 1. IP route 10.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 172.16.0.1 2. IP route 10.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 FE1 since the AD of 1 is 1 and that of 2 is 0, option 2 will be the prefered route for any routing activity to network 172.16.0.1. The route defined by option 1 will be a floating route to the same network, it will not be in your rotuing table. Remember the routing rule, 'Only prefered routes are selected and inserted into the routing table" option one will only show in the routing table if by some means option become unavailable or fails. Try then on your router and see. If you enter both commands on ur router and implement 'Sh ip route' you will only see the route defined by option 2, however if you remove the option 2 command, the route defined by option 1 will surface in your 'sh ip route' I hope this will help you. Why both entries in route table. As confusion is creating from different answers so please reply ,so that all confusions are over. Regards. If I understand you correctly, I don't think we were seeing what you're describing. We had the problem I described even when all devices were attached to a single 3548. Also, someone else asked about the MAC addressesthey were all correct. Clearing MACs on the switch didn't help the issue. Re: Very Strange Problem....Any Ideas? [7:59682]
Thanks for the reply. One of the guys with us actually put a sniffer (an actual hardware suitcase) on the network, but didn't notice anything unusual. Like you, I suspected that it might have been a poorly configured app or some broadcast traffic. If the trouble was showing up at the packet level, the guy looking at the sniffer couldn't see it. I didn't look at it personally since we were all looking at different potential problems and comparing notes. When we go to put in the 3550, I'll probably throw my own sniffer on the line to catch some traffic if the problem reoccurs. Re: Very Strange Problem....Any Ideas? [7:59682]
Craig, I looked through the other responses, but I wanted to offer something. I worked in brokerage for a number of years, most of which time I was in the beginner's level regarding networking. But I do recall some "strange" things happening, and I never did trust the answers particular venders were giving me. First question - when you say "vendor" Unix boxes, are you talking ILX systems? IP only box? no port to IPX, I assume. Second question - is there a firewall someplace in the mix? Third question - any other vendor equipment - say a Bloomberg router or a Bridge Networks server, or maybe a Telerate or two? Any other Thomson equipment in the mix? I had a problem once with what ILX told me was a routing loop. I'd have to sit back and think a long time about the topology I had in place. The problem only occurred with a particular branch that I was moving from a bridged to a routed WAN link. Another time, when I was testing using centralized ILX services ( servers at HQ, workstations in remote offices ), ILX used to blame the failure to operate properly on IP helpering which I had in place for DHCP purposes. They also used to claim that my RIP passive on my PIX firewall was interfering with their servers. I can buy the routing loop, but I never did buy their IP helpering and PIX finger pointing. Again, I'd have to sit back and think a while. It's been over three years now. I asked about other vendors, because you never can tell when a misconfigured redistribution or some static route from 3rd party equipment might creep into the mix. Let us all know. Especially me. I still have a soft spot in my heart for brokerage. Since you worked in a brokerage situation, you probably understand better than most... It's straight IP, but there is equipment from Bloomberg, Metavante, Reuters, Pershing, etc. Most of the equipment, I have to take the vendor's word that it's not misbehaving since I don't have access. Supposedly, each vendor checked their equipment and ruled out all the things we asked them to check. RE: Very Strange Problem....Any Ideas? [7:59682]
You should probably look into the behavior of those UNIX servers that insist on using a /24 mask. Is it possible that they also advertise such a mask with ICMP? See RFC 1256 for more info about ICMP router solicitations and advertisements. I think I have seen Windows and Macintosh machines broadcast ICMP router solicitation messages. Usually they are ignored, but perhaps not in your case. The UNIX machines may have responded with the wrong mask. Routers (and hosts that do routing) also periodically broadcast or multicast router advertisements, which can wreak havoc even if the other hosts don't ask for the info. You said you checked the mask on all your devices, though... But perhaps the problem was intermittent, due to the intermitten nature of ICMP router advertisements. Another thought is that there could have been a rogue DHCP server somewhere. These days DHCP server capability is showing up in all sorts of devices, particularly wireless access points, but also other Internet toasters, refigerators, etc. ;-) Anyway, I guess you already know that you'll want to put a sniffer on this network and figure out what is really going on before you go back to the addressing that should, of course, work. Another thing you may want to do is have MRTG poll the switch and/or routers. This way you may be able to notice if one of the one of the servers or netowrk devices is sending out unexpected large amounts of data. Before adding additional commands, have a clear idea: what is your routing policy? how do you want the added command to change the routing policy? Halabi (1st ed -- I have 2nd ed on order) doesn't present things in this manner, I agree. But in many respects, his Parts 3 and 4 should be studied before Part 2. Learn policy before configuration. So what are you trying to do with the backdoor command? I say this, in part, because I've never found a real-world case where I needed it. There are some examples in documentation, I will admit. Looking at the Halabi examples, I think it's cleaner to use a route-map to redistribute the IGP route into BGP, setting a local-preference to make it preferred. Local preference is BGP standard, while backdoor is not. > >Another question: >When I use command, then , I can >find the route 192.68.5.0 255.255.255.0 192.68.6.2 appeared, but the BGP >esatblished, the route then disappeared from the output of the route ospf>. >What's happen ? Re: STRANGE PROBLEM in updating EIGRP routes [7:37055]
There appears to be quite a few bugs with EIGRP in 12.2(4)T. There is one that sounds similar to this but it's not exactly the same thing. Still, you might want to try the workaround just in case. Try setting 'pulse-time 3' on your serial interfaces. In some cases, with certain outboard gear, EIGRP has problems with interfaces that use pulse-time 1 or 2 after a reload. I don't know what the default pulse-time is, but it might be enlightening to at least give this a shot. If I were you, I wouldn't use 12.2(4)T unless you really have to. Were you the one needing this image to get certain modules to work? If so, upgrade as soon as you can. It appears that 12.2(8)T is out but I didn't see that it fixed any of the EIGRP errors. Good luck, and let us know if you find the answer! WAS RE: Strange problem of route table [7:59533]
I seem to recall that the Administrative Distance of static routes that specify a local interface has differed between 0 and 1 depending on IOS version. I have a hand written note that (I think) says the value is 0 for 11.3 and 12.0; but is now 1 for newer IOS versions. If true, your results will depend on which IOS your routers are running. I'd appreciate comments for those who have more specific info. Re: what the h... - strange problem - Cisco doesn' [7:62148]
Consider your OSI layers. :-) A hub problem is very unlikely to cause such an issue. A generic router wouldn't either. This definitely seems like a Layer 7 problem. Someone is filtering on .exe and .zip. They just weren't smart enough to think about the UNIX and Mac equivalents. This could be an Intrustion Detection System or some sort of smart firewall. How are they downloading these? E-mail attachments maybe? Not letting users download .exe files via e-mail attachments might make a lot of sense as an e-mail server configuration. Anyway, start looking at Layer 7 and above (politics, policies). Question your Internet provider! Priscilla Charles Riley wrote: > > Sorry, should have mentioned. Re: what the h... - strange problem - MORE INFO [7:62184]
Thanks to all who have responded and requested more information. Below is a more embellished picture: "Internet"-BIG_ROUTER-FR-2500HUB---AS5300---D/U Users We are the ISP, in this case, which is why I can say no content filtering is occuring. We have several of these small POPs in the region, all of the going to BIG_ROUTER at a central location. BIG_ROUTER and its trusty configuration are not suspects at this point because the other POPs connected to it have no problem. In fact, if users dial into the POPs of nearby towns, they do not have this problem. This problem was brought to my attention about a week before the slammer attacks occured. The downloads are via HTTP and FTP; the results are the same. The problems occur with any server on the Internet. This morning, an user just informed that he can no longer download .img files. He also told that he logs attack traffic, and is seeing alot of scans and attempts against ports 137 (and sometimes 139) on his box. I don't think our FR provider is the problem since FR stops at Layer 2 and won't/can't distinguish between .zip and .gz files. I am thinking that perhaps there is a workstation or server connected to the hub that may be proxying or intercepting .zip and .exe requests? Sam's suggestion of sniffing is a good one, and will be probably be my next step as it's been a while since this POP LAN had its health checked. Troubleshooting continues! Re: what the h... - strange problem - MORE INFO [7:62184]
I bet the scans of ports 137 (NetBIOS Name) and 139 (NetBIOS session) happen all the time and aren't related. Most Internet-connected hosts are being scanned for these ports being open on a regular basis. File sharing uses them and if someone has file sharing open a hacker can do mischeif. Good luck with the troubleshooting. This is a good one. I'm still betting on some IDS or firewall or proxy server. Have you considered personal firewall/anti-virus software on the affected stations as a possibility too? what the h... - strange problem - Cisco doesn't like Windows? [7:62144]
I ran across a strange problem with one of our POPs the other day, and am in the process of researching/troubleshooting it. We have a configuration something like this: "Internet"---2500---AS5300---D/U Users Not shown is a LAN connected to the 2nd Ethernet on the 2500. All connections to the shared Ethernet are via a Kmart bluelight special hub. The connection to the Internet is a T-1 FR. Neither the 2500 nor the T-1 is anywhere close to being overloaded. We are not doing any content filtering, nor have any access lists been applied, nor are any sites blocked. The connection works great...email, web browsing, etc. all work just fine. The only problem is that users can only download UNIX and Mac flavored files, but not anything that smacks of Windows. For example, they can down the .gz/tar and .sft files for a SSH client for example, but can not download its .exe or .zip counterpart for Windows! Take the same .exe and .zip file, and rename it with a UNIX or Mac filename extension, and you can download it. Surprisingly enough, the problem does not lie with the users. I took a "clean" laptop to the site, and encountered the same results. Has anyone ever experienced a problem like this? Could this be a bug in the IOS on the 2500? Any suggestions would be welcome. load a packet sniffer on the laptop and see what really happens. If you don't have one I know of a good free one . You install libpcap first, reboot and then install analyzer. http://winpcap.polito.it/install/default.htm http://analyzer.polito.it/install/default.htm Then you can see if the packets are coming back to you and if windows is dropping them for some reason. Re: what the h... - strange problem - Cisco doesn't like [7:62148]
Sorry, should have mentioned. I get the same result whether the user system is UNIX, Mac, or Windows...it plays havoc with .exe and .zip. That is a good suggestion, though, about the sniffer...that is about the only thing I haven't tried yet. The Kmart bluelight special hub is making me a little suspicious... Re: what the h... - strange problem - Cisco doesn't like [7:62149]
That HUB doesn't know the difference between the various file name extensions and neither does the router. UNIX comes with tcpdump so there's no need to load the sniffer. Also run the debug command on the router to see if the packets are going through it if you don't see them getting to the UNIX box in tcpdump outputs. sounds like someone's content filtering upstream. Most admins will block .zip and exe but aren't concerned with the UNIX .tar and .gz variants. You'll know this for sure when you run the debug command on the router, ""Charles Riley"" wrote in message [EMAIL PROTECTED]">news:[EMAIL PROTECTED]... > Sorry, should have mentioned. RE: what the h... - strange problem - Cisco doesn't like [7:62150]
Charles; Give us more detail. I'm taking you to say that dial-up users connect to a server somewhere on the Internet to download files. Any particular servers or any server out on the Internet? They are using FTP? Any difference between active or passive mode? You did not mention any servers at the POP location. Any strange MTU configured anywhere? > -Original Message- > From: Charles Riley [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] > Sent: Wednesday, January 29, 2003 4:17 PM > To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Subject: what the h... - strange problem - Cisco doesn't like Windows? > [7:62144] > > > I ran across a strange problem with one of our POPs the other > day, and am in > the process of researching/troubleshooting it. When you say, "sounds like someone's content filtering upstream", are you talking about the frame provider? Re: what the h... - strange problem - Cisco doesn't like [7:62163]
my money's on content filtering by your upstream. did this ever work? I wonder if this is a spillover from last weekend's port 1434 (saphire) attacks. could be that some upstream engineer started filtering everything Microsoft to stop network overload. Re: what the h... - strange problem - Cisco doesn't like [7:62180]
Yes. As long as Charles knows he's not doing any filtering within his architecture, the filtering must be done at his ISP. But like I said earlier, the only way to be sure is running debug on the router and tcpdump on the host while downloading to see where the packets are dropped. Strange Problem: Everything works fine but the Router can NOT [7:34170]
Hi group, I have a router which is the main gateway of my network. All the hosts on my network can successfully ping everywhere on the internet, but the ROUTER itself has always a success rate at 50%. Bellow is the ping result: Router#ping Protocol [ip]: Target IP address: 193.0.0.193 Repeat count [5]: 10 Datagram size [100]: Timeout in seconds [2]: Extended commands [n]: Sweep range of sizes [n]: Type escape sequence to abort. Sending 10, 100-byte ICMP Echos to 193.0.0.193, timeout is 2 seconds: !.!.!.!.!. Success rate is 50 percent (5/10), round-trip min/avg/max = Same time my computer which is exactly behind the router can ping 193.0.0.193 without any errors. No routing protocol is running on the router and it's using simple static routes and all of its interfaces have VALID IP addresses. Any idea what the problem is ???
