Re: Stus-List New Wiring Diagram Draft

2015-03-26 Thread Peter Fell via CnC-List
Hey Rich

Could you elaborate on your thoughts re combiners / charge relays vs.
echo-chargers? I’m looking at options right now myself.

For Edd, is there any benefit to having a solar controller that is dual-bank?
I’m not sure which one you are proposing (have?) but I’m wondering if the
‘programming’ of the distribution of charge to each bank will conflict with the
voltage sensing and resulting operation of the ACR (or perhaps think of it the
other way round).

For me I’m puzzling over a similar situation. My setup is proposed to be a
house bank of 2 x Group 27 flooded in parallel with a small (U1?) AGM ‘start’
(I’m only starting an Atomic Four) ... but set it up so that the ‘start’ is
actually a ‘reserve’ battery ... I’ll use the house bank for starting and house
duties and connect my alternator to the house bank. So my 1-2-Both switch
becomes a battery ‘use’ switch ... normally just used between Off and 1. But my
battery charger is a ProMariner ProSport 20amp 3-bank charger, that distributes
charge to each bank depending on SOC (so for example, connected to 3 batteries
it could provide 2amps, 2amps and 16amps) and also has multi-charging stages.
It also wants to have one set of leads connected to at most one battery ...
even if they are in a bank. So in my setup, 2 sets of leads to the house, one
to each battery, and one set to the reserve. ProMariner tech support says that
a combiner or ACR will not cause any issues but I’m not so sure this would be
the case. Blue Sea recommends setting up to turn off the ACR when multiple
bank chargers / multi-stage chargers are used. So I probably will install a
switch on the ground, like Edd plans, and/or a relay to trigger on energizing
the AC circuit to the battery charger and break the ground to turn off the Blue
Sea ACR. I’ve also been looking at a Yandina Combiner 100 ... it has similar
capability to be turned off (although with it, it has a ground connection but a
separate ‘remote’ connection that is used to trigger the combiner off by
closing to ground). Now I may in the future put in a solar panel. I actually
have a good controller with single bank connection ... would certainly work
through the combiner or ACR but probably wouldn’t be used at the same time as
the charger (solar alongside / underway during summer months and charger only
during the winter when I’m running cabin heater / dehumidifier anyway).

I don’ think, by the way, that the Echo-charger can be turned ‘off’?

You are correct - it is Globalstar and they did have problems with the first
generation satellites. This phone works with the second generation satellites
that were launched about two years ago. I have one and it's excellent. It
starts up and locks on satellites faster than I can start my cell phone and the
voice quality is excellent. The data is slow, but that's true for any of the
systems.

Joel - if you want to try it, I'd be happy to let you. I have a lot of minutes
left from last year that will expire, so great if we use some.

If you are bored, take a look.

What I've done may not be right for anyone else, but it might give you ideas of

lack a second jib track and reaching strut, etc.

Re: Stus-List First aid kit

2015-03-26 Thread Rick Brass via CnC-List
I suppose, Joel, it depends on what you mean by “offshore”.

If offshore means the South Pacific, and when in New Guinea you might run into
(inset whatever nasty bug or predator trips your trigger here) a $450 kit might
be a bargain. Even a necessitiy.

For me, offshore means the islands in the Bahamas, or maybe some place in the
Caribbean. My kit is pretty big. I can splint, suture, heat, cool, rehydrate,
relieve pain, treat burns. Heck, the kit even has a scalpel and tubing, but if
you need a tracheotomy you are probably SOL, buddy. The kit takes up 3
waterproof boxes – four if you count the one marked “analgesics” that has the
scopolamine, Dramamine, aspirin, Tylenol, sunburn cream, etc. in it – and it
cost somewhere around $200 to put together.

Look on a couple of cruiser sites and you should be able to come up with a
list of contents appropriate for the area where you will be going. Or ask the
wife. Then buy what you need.

Chuck - I recently had this discussion off-list with Jake Broderson; my take
was that the i50/i60 displays will only ever do one thing. The wind display
will only ever display wind. For not much more, you could get into the i70
system; it only comes with one display to start, but that display can show
any data on the bus. So you can set it up in tri-data mode and display
wind, speed and depth on the one display (like this):

Want to add another display? Change the data shown on the first display,
and add other data on the new one. It's a very nice, customizable system.

Raymarine has a rebate on until the end of April; you can get $50 back on
any instrument purchase. If you want special C&C lister pricing, contact me
off-list. And there are others on the list for whom I've provided gear,
including the i70 System - ask around for their experience.

Advanced training would be worthwhile, but i'd probably pass out during the

In the Safety at Sea seminar they made clear that if you have a heart attack
and no AED you are dead. No one can do CPR long enough for a boat or chopper
to get to you. Sobering stuff!

During the Bermuda race we had an MD on board, but he hadn't seen a patient in
30 years. Still it was comforting to have him there. My internist was good

Re: Stus-List New instruments?

2015-03-26 Thread Ken Heaton via CnC-List
No, you would also have to purchase a Raymarine iTC-5 Instrument Transducer
Converter and a few more cables to make up a small SeaTalk ng network as
there are no connections on the i70 for the transducers.

http://www.raymarine.com/view/?id=3338

...or you could keep the i50 tridata instrument mounted and hooked up
somewhere on the boat and connect an i70 to it using a single SeaTalk ng
cable.

Stus-List New Wiring Diagram Draft

2015-03-26 Thread Edd Schillay via CnC-List
Listers,

Thanks for all of the advice regarding rewiring the power systems on the
Enterprise.

Here is link to my draft setup:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/15162917/ENTERPRISE/EnterpriseWiring-Draft.pdf

Very crude I know and probably could be considered a mess by any respectful
wiring diagram standards. Still, I would appreciate listers input or just to
say “Edd, you got it all wrong. You idiot. Get off our C&C List, you amateur
hack.”

Thanks again. This list is the most valuable part of owning my C&C.

All the best,

Edd

Chuck - I recently had this discussion off-list with Jake Broderson; my take
was that the i50/i60 displays will only ever do one thing. The wind display
will only ever display wind. For not much more, you could get into the i70
system; it only comes with one display to start, but that display can show
any data on the bus. So you can set it up in tri-data mode and display
wind, speed and depth on the one display (like this):

Want to add another display? Change the data shown on the first display,
and add other data on the new one. It's a very nice, customizable system.

including the i70 System - ask around for their experience.

Re: Stus-List New instruments?

Speaking of instruments - - I have an old Nexus (NX1?) system. It works.
But...some damn (large) bird decided to perch on my wind instrument on the top
of the mast. He/she broke off the vane of the wind direction part. I found it
on the deck, but am unsure about trying to reattach it - glue? a light weight
stiffener? I dunno.

Does anyone have such an old relic sitting around in their boat bin? I would
rather replace the vane than try to repair it.

Thanks for looking.

Ask her what needs to be in the kit and then what she would be able to use
if it were in the kit, buy every item she suggests, check against what is

each than a standard kit includes...buy a water tight container and label
as First Aid and store on board...you can get a lot of first aid kit suff

Re: Stus-List Tool(s) Recommendation for Battery Cable

If Edd’s going to pre-run and cut/crimp as he goes then I would think the
hammer crimp wouldn’t work for him.

In the thriving metropolis of New York, are there any tool rental places that
have them? Craigslist for a used one?

If you use the hammer crimp I suggested make sure you have a good "anvil". I
have always had the luxury of being able to take mine home and hammer them on
the concrete garage floor. The "V" shaped cradle and striker compress the lug
pretty evenly from 3 sides. While hitting it I can hear and feel a discernable
change when the lug is fully crimped. IMO This type of hammer crimp is
different/better (and cheaper) than the ancor dimple crimper (which can use a

Josh,

Advanced training would be worthwhile, but i'd probably pass out during the
course!

In the Safety at Sea seminar they made clear that if you have a heart
attack and no AED you are dead. No one can do CPR long enough for a boat
or chopper to get to you. Sobering stuff!

During the Bermuda race we had an MD on board, but he hadn't seen a patient
in 30 years. Still it was comforting to have him there. My internist was
good about writing prescriptions for Zofran, scopalamine etc. I'll need to
re-stock.

I've also heard quite a few recommendations for the whole offshore crew to
have advanced medical training. No matter how good the first aid bag is
and how good your wife is, what if she is the one injured? AEDs are also
becoming a regular addition to offshore kits. I recommend it.

Re: Stus-List New instruments?

2015-03-26 Thread Frederick G Street via CnC-List
Chuck — I recently had this discussion off-list with Jake Broderson; my take
was that the i50/i60 displays will only ever do one thing. The wind display
will only ever display wind. For not much more, you could get into the i70
system; it only comes with one display to start, but that display can show any
data on the bus. So you can set it up in tri-data mode and display wind, speed
and depth on the one display (like this):

Want to add another display? Change the data shown on the first display, and
add other data on the new one. It’s a very nice, customizable system.

Raymarine has a rebate on until the end of April; you can get $50 back on any
instrument purchase. If you want special C&C lister pricing, contact me
off-list. And there are others on the list for whom I’ve provided gear,
including the i70 System — ask around for their experience.

Stus-List lf38 hatch seals

Here's the stuff. Seems the galley and head hatches are A&H. I also need a

I resealed my A&H hatches with a ?? diameter neoprene foam ?rod? called breaker
bead by a friend in the glass business. It is used to seal around commercial
windows and is pretty inexpensive. I think you can find it at Lowes and Home
Depot, but mine came from a glass shop. I scraped the old foam seals out of the
channels where they are mounted and wire brushed the aluminum frames, then
applied 3M automotive trim adhesive and spread it in the channel and pressed
the rubber into place.

Cut the rod square with a razor blade, start at middle of the lower side of the
hatch, make sure you don?t stretch the rod as you press it in place, cut the
finished end to length with a razor blade when you get there and can be sure to
get a tight match with the point where you started.

I know this question came up in 2006
(http://cnc-list.com/pipermail/cnc-list_cnc-list.com/2006-May/002846.html ),
but that's 9 years ago and the story may have changed since then.

I'm getting to work on a few leaks in our boat, and the galley + head hatches
(LF38) come first.

The previous thread recommended Clean Seal, or direct from Atkins & Hoyle (for
the more expensive option). I had trouble finding the part # on Clean Seal
though. Are those two still the best options?

Here's are some pics of the galley hatch:

http://svviolethour.com/?attachment_id=181

http://svviolethour.com/?attachment_id=179

http://svviolethour.com/?attachment_id=180

The current gasket material actually doesn't look that bad, it just doesn't
seat well - so unless I'm very careful to cram it in the right spots we get
leaks. I almost wonder whether it's just the wrong size/shape for the hatch?

Would something like the Bomar Hatch gasket material (5/8" in an extruded
format or 9/16" in round) on Defender possibly work?

Plus, I can't help lust after some new stuff.

Re: Stus-List First aid kit

2015-03-26 Thread Edd Schillay via CnC-List
Joel,

Most sporting goods stores and camping supply outfits has some good robust kits
for a fraction of the “marine” prices. How detailed a set will depend on you
and the requirements. I have a pretty good set on board which I got for under
$100, but I don’t go more than a few miles offshore and don’t see myself as
someone who could do any major first aid beyond the basics.

Having a nurse on board is a major benefit. It would be wise to ask her what
items she would need on board in case something happens and then pick a kit
based on that.

Re: Stus-List New instruments?

2015-03-26 Thread Edd Schillay via CnC-List
Chuck,

The T-108 is pretty simple, but installation will depend on what you already
have up there. I had to send someone up and it turned out to be a pretty big
deal since my old B&G system had some stripped screws up there. The bonus is
there’s no wiring to be done.

You may find the readings a little quirky though. If you race, it’ll be
frustrating. If you cruise and just want basic speed and wind angle, you’ll be
pleased. I had a mid-mast repeater installed to help with the signal on mine,
but you should be OK with a 34.

Even if there is extra labor involved, it will probably be cheaper than getting
a new wife who can hoist you up the mast.

Chuck,

I have the wireless wind with the 12 volt display. Good news is no
wiring. Still requires a trip up the mast.

Remember, the transducer may not fit in the current thru hull sleeve. If
you want to integrate the instruments into a chartplotter you need to buy
the T122 interface and connect using NMEA 183 - not 2000.

Obviously not a marine environment - so far they work fine). The company has
an odd name, but the quality of the marine signal and 12 V power cables I
bought from them was fine. You could check with them to make sure they use a
good crimper and lugs.

Re: Stus-List Tool(s) Recommendation for Battery Cable

2015-03-26 Thread Edd Schillay via CnC-List
Fred,

I’m well aware that yellow is the new black, but I don’t think the majority of
the cable manufacturers got that memo.

I’ll never confuse the AC hot lead with the DC ground. I keep my AC wires
insulated and away from my DC. When my AC wires are exposed, it’s only for a
few inches and very close to their white and green counterparts.

All the best,

Edd

To avoid confusion with the “hot” AC lead, which is also black, the DC “cold”

Re: Stus-List Tool(s) Recommendation for Battery Cable

2015-03-26 Thread Nauset Beach via CnC-List
Edd,

You probably could find a marine electrician on City Island to do the crimps
for short $ after you measure the runs you need, mark the spools with tape,
and bring the wire spools, lugs and shrink wrap tubes to him. That way you
could get "good" cuts and crimps from a "good" crimper without shelling out
the $700 Denis mentioned.

He is getting $ for very little time on his part, and you are getting top
quality cuts and crimps without investing capital.

Fred,

Thanks, but the lengths are all a question mark. I purchased a large spool
of red and black cable and are going to do the runs under this and over
that, and then cut/crimp.

There are imported version for a lot less.

Re: Stus-List Hatch gasket material for A&H small hatches?

2015-03-26 Thread Rick Brass via CnC-List
I resealed my A&H hatches with a ½” diameter neoprene foam “rod” called breaker
bead by a friend in the glass business.

Cut the rod square with a razor blade, start at middle of the lower side of the
hatch, make sure you don’t stretch the rod as you press it in place, cut the
finished end to length with a razor blade when you get there and can be sure to
get a tight match with the point where you started.

Re: Stus-List C&C 37plus Draft

2015-03-26 Thread Danny Haughey via CnC-List
Hi Ron, That is a little encouraging. I know there is a C&C 41 for sale at
the marina where I kept Lolita. It drew over 7 feet and they modified the keel
to shorten it and attached a bulb to put the weight back on. I figured if they
were concerned enough to go that kind of trouble, there had to be a reason...
The Viking Drew almost 6' and I got into many places with little issue. I had
a couple soft groundings on shoals but nothing really hung us up. That extra
1'-3" has me a bit concerned... Danny

Danny,

I have a 37+ with a 7’3” draft which I keep in Bristol, RI. So far
it has been no problem in Narragansett Bay, Block Island Cuttyhunk, Vineyard
Haven & Edgartown. I sail with a friend in a J/30 out of Red Brook Harbor.
That’s a little tight and if I brought my boat there, I’d look for
either a really calm, clear day and/or favorable tide.

As far as the deep keel, the boat is extremely stable and rides well in rough
water. With 10’ waves going around Cape May, it did very well.

Good luck on your choice.

Hi Guys,

I've got a 37plus on my radar but the draft is 7'-3" I think that may be a bit
too deep, I don't think I'd be able to stay where I kept the Viking and I do
like that location. I also think it may limit some harbors out on the the
islands in and around buzzard's bay...

Would anyone have any comments about the deep draft and it limitations around
Cape Cod, south coast and the islands?

Edd,

I owned a business that had a Thomas & Betts TBM6 crimp tool. It is
expensive and I don't think you'd want to buy one. However, it is very
important to get a good crimp. You might try finding someone who makes
custom marine cables.
