[cobirds] Osprey in Loveland 11/16
About 15 minutes ago I saw an Osprey on Namaqua Road in SW Loveland. It was flying around a pond that was built a couple of years ago and earlier this summer an Osprey platform was put up in the same location. It is only 5 minutes from my house, so I got home to get my camera and went back, but couldn't relocate the bird to get photos. This is the latest Osprey I have ever seen in CO and according to ebird this is a first November record for Larimer County. Several birders let me know today that they went to Fort Collins City Park today and no one have been able to locate the Brants that were reported yesterday. [cobirds] Northeast Colorado Rarities 11/14
Today, as you all know, I visited NE Colorado. Immediately after I arrived at the Common Ground-Dove location I (re)found a RUSTY BLACKBIRD in the same location where Brad Steger found one yesterday. It then took me 1 hour until Todd and I found the COMMON GROUND-DOVE and we watched it for about 45 minutes, most of the time on the road close to the entrance to this location. Todd and I then drove County Road 28 (Sedgwick County) looking for the Harris's Sparrow that Mark Peterson posted about yesterday. We couldn't find any, but I was successful in spishing in a Ring-necked Pheasant, the first time I have ever done that. Also in the area was a RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER. Next stop was to the Ovid Woods looking for the stub-tailed wren. We heard a wren give the agitated call a couple of times as it flew around me, but we didn't see it. I also heard a wilson's warbler like call, presumably from a PACIFIC WREN. Then we went looking for the Eastern Towhee again reported yesterday by Mark and Brad. We were unsuccessful in finding the towhee, but did refind the 'Eastern' BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER and a HARRIS'S SPARROW. Next stop was at Jumbo Reservoir, but when we were arriving the wind picked up and made scanning difficult. We were quickly able to refind the RED-NECKED GREBE and PACIFIC LOON both on the Sedgwick side of the reservoir. While scanning from the Logan County side we saw an adult female SURF SCOTER flyby in a flock of Mallards. This is when Todd and I split off and my plan was to head straight home, but plans change. On my way to the interstate on Red Lion Road I saw 2 dead Opossums and I decided to stop and photograph them. After a couple minutes at this spot I watched 16 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS fly east to west along the South Platte River. While heading home I decided to make a quick stop at Prewitt Reservoir (Washington County) just to check if I could find anything in those strong winds. My first stop was driving on the Logan side and walking up on the dam, there I found was an adult male WHITE-WINGED SCOTER and a COMMON LOON. I then scoped from the north center portion of the reservoir and found a PACIFIC LOON. The last stop was from the west side. Here I was able to find another PACIFIC LOON, a RED-NECKED GREBE, and 4 BLACK SCOTERS (2 of which were adult males). My last stop of the day was at Jackson Lake in Morgan County. I wasn't able to find anything of interest from the State Wildlife Area. From the dam I was able to locate a COMMON LOON and a RED-THROATED LOON. From the boat ramp I was able to find another COMMON LOON and 2 PACIFIC LOONS. Cole Wild Loveland -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] Gulls at Timnath Reservoir 11/10
This afternoon I spent a little bit of time at Timnath Reservoir in Larimer County. I got hung up looking through the geese and gulls, so I didn't have the time to scan most of the reservoir and I didn't even have enough time to scan all the gulls as closely as I would have liked. Here are the highlights: Snow Goose - 2, also a hybrid snow/canada type present ICELAND GULL - 1 1st year Thayer's Gull - 1 Lesser Black-backed Gull - 3 Possible SLATY-BACKED GULL - 1 (I am thinking 2nd winter) From looking at pics on the internet I strongly believe that it is a Slaty-backed, but I am willing to be proven wrong. First off it was a large gull, a lot heavier and even several inches taller than the Iceland Gull it was battling with over some food. It had a white head and breast with a smudgy spot around the eye. It also had a fairly white belly. It had a tricolored back, most of it was smudgy dark, but it also had a little bit of lighter gray and brown. It had dark, appeared black, primaries and pink legs. It also had a bicolored bill, with ~1/4 of it being black and the rest being pinkish. A couple very poor pics of the possible Slaty-backed (and one of the pics it is next to the Iceland Gull) can be seen on my website: http://www.pbase.com/birdingwild1/image/139545574. The bird was a long ways away and was digiscoped with my iPhone. I will be out first thing tomorrow morning looking for the Varied Thrush with several birders and then we are planning to head to Timnath right after that. I will post if we refind any of these birds and hope to see others out there. Cole Wild Loveland -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] Gilpin County and drive back 10/25
Today I decided to try my luck again at Gilpin County, mostly looking for ducks (which was almost duckless) and European Starling (I missed it yet again, it is the only county I still need to see it in). I then worked my way back to Loveland. Here are the interesting birds I saw along the way: Gilpin County Los Lagos #3 Lewis's Woodpecker - 1, the first bird of the day in Gilpin Town of Rollinsville Northern Shrike - 1 Clark's Nutcracker - Flock of 78 harrassing the shrike Gray Jay - 1, with the Nutcrackers Evening Grosbeak - 26 Brown-capped Rosy-Finch - 1 Lump Gulch Road White-winged Crossbill - 1 Evening Grosbeak - 4 Red Crossbill - 5, flyover Spring Creek Reservoir Green-winged Teal - 2 flying off as I pulled up to the lake Horned Lark - 3 119 heading east from Central City / Blackhawk American Tree Sparrow - 1, in with a flock of Juncos Boulder County Boulder Reservoir (all birds previously reported) Black Scoter - 4 (female / immature) Surf Scoter - 1 (female / immature) Arctic Tern - 1 Common Garter Snake - 1 dead Larimer County Dry Creek Reservoir Surf Scoter - 2 (female / immature), they were not together Cole Wild Loveland -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] Front Range birds on 10/22 and 10/23
The past few days despite long days at work I also made some time to go birding. I have made quite a few stops, but most didn't have much of interest. Here are the interesting birds: Yesterday (10/22) Great Western Reservoir (Broomfield County) Red-necked Grebe - 1 Long-billed Dowitcher - 2 Timnath Reservoir, dusk (Larimer County) Thayer's Gull - 1 Lesser Black-backed Gull - 3 Rusty Blackbird - 1, I watched it fly off, but there is a very large blackbird roost along the county line road on the east side of the reservoir and I wouldn't be surprised if it circled back to the roost. Today (10/23) Ish Reservoir (Larimer / Boulder Counties) Pomarine Jaeger (probable, I am still trying to do some research to separate Pomarine and Parasitic) - 1, As I mentioned in an earlier quick post this morning we watched it fly south. It was about 3/4 of a mile away, so it was difficult to see most of the field marks. Timnath Reservoir (Larimer County) Sanderling - 2 (present for about a week now) Lesser Black-backed Gull - 2 Cole Wild Loveland -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] Gilpin County Rarities 10/6 including Chihuahuan Raven and Pine Warbler
Katrina Stowasser and I went up to Gilpin County today for a morning of county birding and everything I mention from this outing can be found on page 39 in the CO Delorme Atlas and/or the county birding website (http://www.coloradocountybirding.com/county/bird_a_county.php?name=Gilpin). We got up there around 6, so decided to try our luck at some owls. We ended up hearing 2 Long-eared Owls, 1 Great Horned Owl, and 1 Northern Saw-whet Owl. We it got light enough to see we started at Los Lagos Reservoir #3 and saw 3 Mallards on the pond. We then made a spot at Manchester Lake and found a small flock of birds, with the best being 1 Brown Creeper, 1 Golden-crowned Kinglet, and 1 Hairy Woodpecker (Mountain race as expected). After going through the flock we then drove a little ways down Tolland Road that goes west out of Rollinsville. About 1/2 a mile out of Rillinsville we saw a bird on top of a small power pole that while first driving by I thought was a crow based on the size, but at the last second we noticed it had a larger raven bill. I had Katrina back up so we could see the bird and it stayed on the post. Just as we turned off the car we heard the bird call at close range. It was fairly high pitched and what I am use to hearing for other Chihuahuan Raven. We then got our optics on the bird and quickly noticed it had a short bill, with nasal bristles extending over 3/4 of the bill. Then after about 50 seconds of watching the raven through our binoculars it flew and I immediately noticed a mostly rounded tail. Everything I saw and heard on the bird suggested Chihuahuan Raven and if I was in a location that both species were present I would have no problem calling it Chihuahuan. I know the mountains are way out of habitat for Chihuahuan Ravens, but this is one of the few spots that I could picture seeing a Chihuahuan Raven being if they went upslope. Also, this is not that far away from Boulder, which seems to have a few reported each fall and winter. About a mile past the raven we found a small flock of birds that included 2 Yellow-rumped Warblers, 1 Orange-crowned Warbler, 1 'Pink-sided' Dark-eyed Junco, and 1 Golden-crowned Kinglet. We then slowly drove about 2 miles on Lump Gulch Road, which I found usually can be quite productive if you can find just the flock, which we did. In the flock we happened upon the second best bird of the day, which was an adult female Pine Warbler. Also in the flock was a Cassin's Vireo, several Yellow-rumped Warblers, a Ruby-crowned Kinglet, and a White-breasted Nuthatch, along with a bunch of usual species. A quick stop at Thorn Lake produced a Brown Creeper on the drive in and 5 Ring-necked Ducks on the lake itself. We then decided to drive through Golden Gate Canyon State Park and ran into several flocks of birds. Not much of interest here with the bests birds seen was 1 Swainson's Thrush and 5 Red Crossbills. A drive on Apex Valley Road heading west a couple of miles produced several dozen birds, but the best were 2 Bushtits and 2 Western Bluebirds. As we were just getting to the west side of the private reservoir of Chase Gulch, we stopped to do look through the wet meadow when a juvenile Townsend's Warbler flew into the tree next to the car. As we got close to the reservoir we were able to find 1 Pied-billed Grebe and 2 Mallards. Going through Central City and Black Hawk we found a small flock of Rock Pigeons, but we were unsuccessful in looking for Eurasian Collared-Dove (1 of 2 Colorado counties I still need it in, the other being Hinsdale). On the way down the highway from Black Hawk to Golden we found our last bird in Gilpin County for the day, a Canyon Wren. [cobirds] Le Conte's Sparrow - Timnath Reservoir 9/4
This evening (9/4) I flushed a Le Conte's Sparrow at Timnath Reservoir, in Larimer County, at the edge of cattails on the northeast side of the reservoir. It flew into the cattails and eventually came into view through the middle of the cattails for about 20 seconds to provide great looks. Unfortunately I have been working today, so I didn't have my camera along with me to get photos. A few other birds of interest were 20 Long-billed Dowitchers, 1 Sanderling, 7 American Avocets, and 2 adult Bald Eagles. [cobirds] Larimer County Birding Fair 9/24
I went to the Larimer County Birding Fair at Fossil Creek Reservoir this morning for a couple of hours before I had to go to work. There were more birds on the lake than I saw there last week. The best were two flyover Caspian Terns. Land birding was the great today. The birds along the lake side was 1 Nashville Warbler, 1 Townsend's Warbler, 1 MacGillivray's Warbler, 1 Wilson's Warbler, and 1 Ruby-crowned Kinglet all mixed in with lots of Yellow-rumped Warblers. [cobirds] Sprague's Pipit 9/18 Timnath Reservoir area
I found a calling Sprague's Pipit at the intersection of Larimer County Road 40 and County Line Road (which it was in both Weld and Larimer Counties). I watched it circle low around the area for about 15 seconds before it flew west and disappeared behind a tree. I tried chasing it down, but wasn't able to relocate it. I am assuming that it landed in the field. I was able to see a streaked breast, white outer tail feathers, and wing bars. Along with those features and the call I was able to get a positive ID (although, the call itself is distinctive). Timnath Reservoir has lots of birds, although numbers seem down compared to earlier this week. Species of interest were: Sanderling - 2 they have been around for a couple weeks (4 seen were on Monday) Long-billed Curlew - 1 that has been there since Monday. Western Sandpiper - 1 Least Sandpiper - 1 Sabine's Gull - 2 (1 photographed) down from 3 that I saw yesterday. Canvasback - 2 Ring-necked Duck - 2 Lesser Scaup - 1 Bullock's Oriole - 1 White-faced Ibis - 8 Pied-billed Grebe - 224 I also birded Fossil Creek Reservoir, Duck Lake, and Dixon Reservoir this morning and the only birds of interest I saw were 7 Canvasback and 2 Wilson's Phalaropes at Duck Lake. [cobirds] Eastern Colorado 9/7
Katrina Stowasser and I birded eastern Colorado for most of the day (9/7). Here are the highlights: Last Chance (Washington) Canada Warbler - 1 previously reported. Mississippi Kite - 1 juvenile Northern Cardinal - 1 female Great Crested Flycatcher - 1 Ovenbird - 2 American Redstart - 10 Northern Waterthrush - 1 Willow Flycatcher - 1 Red-breasted Nuthatch - 1 Akron Golf Course (Washington) Worm-eating Warbler - 1, my 37th species of warbler this year in CO and Katrina's 34th for the year. Red-naped Sapsucker - 1 Town of Akron (Washington) Great Crested Flycatcher - 1 Baltimore Oriole - 1 adult male Jumbo Reservoir (Logan/Sedgwick) DEAD, the only shorebirds I could find was Killdeer, Spotted Sandpiper, and American Avocets. Snow Goose - 1 (Logan) Common Tern 2 (Sedgwick) Skipped Prewitt to get to work on time, which left 25 minutes walking around Crow Valley. [cobirds] Probable CAVE SWALLOW 8/30 Timnath Reservoir, Larimer
Early this afternoon I did a bunch of birding on my way to work. While driving towards the County Line road on E CR 40 (also called E CR 44) I saw three Cliff like swallows flying over the eastern most ditch. I stopped the car just as they were flying over the road and got binoculars on them as they were flying away. I wasn't able to pick up much detail on them, except the bird I was looking at closest appeared to have a pale cheek. Just when I thought I wasn't going to get enough detail I heard one of the birds give two call notes that I have never heard from Cliff Swallows. It had a call that sounded similar to a Barn Swallow but more clearer. I then listened to the call note on my Sibley app and it sounded identical. I am not sure if all 3 birds were Cave Swallows or if just one of the birds were, but from the two call notes it gave I was safely able to eliminate at least one of the birds from being a Cliff Swallow. I stayed at the spot for 20 more minutes without seeing the birds again, but I hope someone can refind the bird and get a photograph for an official first state record. A few other birds of interest: Sanderling - 2 at Timnath, 1 basic / juv plumage on the NW shore and 1 alternate plumage. All 4 regular peeps (Baird's, Semipalmated, Western, and Least) on the extensive mudflats of the outlet at Timnath Reservoir, scan from the County Line Rd. Caspian Tern - 1 adult at Fossil Creek Reservoir on the west shore of the reservoir sitting with a bunch of gulls. [cobirds] Arctic Tern 8/22 Timnath Reservoir, Larimer County
This morning (8/22) Katrina Stowasser and I got to Timnath Reservoir before 7 to try to refind the terns. We were not able to find any terns, but there were also a ton of birds on the islands. The birds of interest we saw this morning was 1 imm Hooded Merganser and 1 Horned Grebe (first found by Steve Mlodinow and we also saw it yesterday). We returned to Timnath Reservoir just before noon. We started at the park in the SW corner. From there we saw 1 Forster's Tern sitting on the island where all the terns were yesterday. We then went around to the NE side of the lake where we spotted another tern standing on the island, which is a lot closer then we were yesterday and with it being partly cloudy made for pretty good lighting. This tern had an all black cap, wingtips were about the same color gray as the back, a short fairly straight all red bill. Since it was slightly on the back side of the island and the angle it was standing we were not able to tell the breast color or the leg length or color, but there was a Franklin's Gull standing right beside it and we were able to see most of the legs, so it appeared to have very short legs. I hope others are able to see this bird, but from missing it this morning it means it could be difficult to see. We did see 3 other terns flying around from this location, 1 was a Forster's Tern, 1 appeared to be another Forster's, and the other I am not sure what it was. [cobirds] Possible Arctic Tern 8/21 Larimer
Katrina Stowasser and I were birding Timnath Reservoir this afternoon when we found a group of 5 terns standing on an island towards the northeast side of the reservoir. We were standing on the southwest shore. I noticed of the terns standing on this island there were terns of 3 slightly different sizes. One was noticeably smaller than the others. We started looking closer at them all and noticed the 2 largest had orange bills and legs which makes them Forster's Terns, the 2 middle sized ones had red bills, red legs, and gray wing tips, belly, and breast which makes them Common Terns. The other appeared to have an all black cap (which would eliminate Least, it also wasn't small enough to be a Least) we couldn't see the legs as we watched it walk a little bit on the shore, we couldn't see any details on the bill even when we were able to tell it was moving its head around, it did have gray wing tips. The fact that we couldn't see detail on the bill and legs suggested that the bill and legs we relatively short. Everything I could tell about the bird suggested Arctic except the only thing that I am worried about is that the breast and belly didn't appear to be gray, but that also could have been the lighting where it was standing. The other thing is according to ebird this would be the earliest fall migrant Arctic Tern in CO (this list is not complete, so I don't know if this would actually be the earliest record), but Long-tailed Jaegers and Sabine's Gulls start showing up around this time, so this would definitely not be out of the picture. There were also several terns flying around the reservoir, all that we identified were adult Forster's Terns and about half of those had the head color of non-breeding birds, but with mostly orange bills. We didn't find anything else of interest while we were out there. There is a lot of shore showing now, but the only shorebirds we saw were Killdeer and Spotted Sandpipers. I have been checking Timnath Reservoir about every other day for over two weeks and today had by far the most birds on the reservoir so far. Although, last week there were far more migrating land birds around than today. Cole Wild Loveland -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] 7/28 Lesser Nighthawk, Larimer
Yesterday (7/28), I watched a female Lesser Nighthawk fly over my house in SE Loveland as it was going south southeast. It was a smallish nighthawk with rounded wings and it was in a direct flight. It wasn't the erratic flights that we usually see on feeding Common Nighthawks. As I got a closer look I notice a very rufous body and the primary spots were near the tip of the wings. [cobirds] Driveby / Flyby Scissor-tailed Flycatcher - Larimer
This afternoon (7/21) while driving home from work on Highway 402, about 1 mile east of Highway 287, I saw a kingbird shaped and sized bird flying south across the road in front of me. I quickly picked up the gray coloring and a tail a little longer than the body. With this I realized it was a Scissor-tailed Flycatcher, probably female. It didn't have a black cap on it, so I was able to eliminate Fork-tailed Flycatcher in this quick view. Luckily, this species is easy to identify from its long tail and a kingbird shape. It looked identical to the Scissor-tailed Flycatcher that Joe Roller found in Yuma County on July 12. I watched as long as I could while driving and it kept flying during that time, which the bird was about 200 yards to the south and it was still going strong towards the south. I really don't believe this bird to be chasable, but there is still a chance it could still be around. I will keep my eyes open on my way to and from work the next few days and post if I can refind it. Singing, responded to playback but never saw the bird. Rufous Hummingbird - 1 (Baca and Las Animas) flew around and then through the large parking area. Rufous-crowned Sparrow - 1 (Las Animas) Orchard Oriole - 2 (Baca) Yellow-billed Cuckoo - 4 (Baca and Las Animas) Ladder-backed Woodpecker - 3 (Baca and Las Animas) Western Screech-Owl - 2 (Baca) 2 Miles south of Springfield on Highway 287 (Baca) Long-billed Curlew - 12 in a field on the west side of the road Neenoshe Reservoir (Kiowa) Mountain Plover - 1 running around at the edge of the reservoir Snowy Plover - 36 Western, Semipalmated, Baird's, and Least Sandpipers - couple hundered peeps Long-billed Curlew - 1 Lake Cheraw and Lake Holbrook (Otero) had very high water levels, with very few birds. Dairy Farm on the north side of Lake Meredith (Crowley) Semipalmated Sandpiper - 3 Western Sandpiper - 1 Marbled Godwit - 1 Stilt Sandpiper - 4 Bonaparte's Gull - 2 Franklin's Gull - 1 Lake Meredith (Crowley) Black Tern - 4 Lake Henry (Crowley) LAUGHING GULL - 1 adult, photographed in flight, it flew south towards Meredith as we were studying it. Flagler SWA (Kit Carson) BLACK RAIL - 1 calling in the marsh below the dam just as it was getting to dark to see. 7/13 Bonny Reservoir area (Yuma) - It was slightly raining, foggy, and windy. Didn't find most of the birds we were looking for. Bell's Vireo - 1 Field Sparrow - 1 County Road Y, about a mile south of the Yuma/Phillips county line (Yuma) SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER - 1, appears to be the same bird Joe Roller photographed on the 12th. We saw the bird sitting at the top of a dead tree as we were slowly driving by, but we were not able to stop as the roads were very muddy and I was afraid that if we stopped we would get stuck. Frenchman Creek SWA (Phillips) Bell's Vireo - 2 We skipped out on Tamarack Ranch and Jumbo Reservoir due to road conditions in the area. We birded our way back to Loveland, but didn't find anything else of interest. Dirt road conditions made it difficult to go most places. [cobirds] South West Colorado and San Luis Valley 6/16-6/18
Katrina Stowasser and I did a big trip to south west Colorado the past 3 days. It was a very long and very successful trip. We had lots of exciting birds, but not many that we didn't expect in these areas. By far the best bird was an Arctic Tern in Costilla County. Some of the highlights include: WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL - 6/18 (Lake) A pair flying around and eye level and calling in a campground just below Mount Evans Forbay. - 6/20 (Hinsdale) A female sitting in the top of a tree and calling on the top of Slumgullion Pass. Red Crossbill - 6/18 around a hundred around Lake County with most of them being in the town of Leadville and Turquoise Lake. We had them in a number of other spots on the trip also, but in small numbers. Gray Vireo - 6/19 (Ouray) 1 singing about a mile west of the town of Colona, also present at this location was a Gray Flycatcher and Ash-throated Flycatcher. Band-tailed Pigeon - 6/19 (Ouray) At least 5 at Lake Lenore - 6/19 (La Plata) 1 sitting in a tree at Wildcat Canyon (same tree as Acorn Woodpecker). Acorn Woodpecker - 6/19 (La Plata) 2 in the usual trees at Wildcat Canyon. Lewis's Woodpecker - 6/19 (La Plata) 1 on out way out of Wildcat Canyon. - 6/20 (Archuleta) 3 in the town of Pagosa Springs (I don't think I have ever missed them in this town) Lucy's Warbler - 6/19 (Montezuma) 4 (1 pair and 2 other birds singing) at Lower Yellow Jacket Canyon. Lesser Nighthawk - 6/19 (Montrose) At least 3 birds (2 males and 1 female) at the usual spot at Nucla Sewage Ponds at dusk with well of 100 Common Nighthawks. Lesser Goldfinch - 6/20 (Hinsdale) 1 singing and calling in the town of Lake City. We had several others, but in more expected areas. Orange-crowned Warbler - 6/20 (Hinsdale) 1 male consistently singing on our way up to Slumgullion Pass from Lake City. American Three-toed Woodpecker - 6/20 (Rio Grande) 1 at Million Reservoir just west of South Fork in an old burn area. Williamson's Sapsucker - 6/20 (Conejos) 1 male flew accross the road in front of us on the east side of La Manga Pass. American Bittern - 6/20 (Alamosa) 4 birds (3 flying around together and 1 standing on the road) at Alamosa National Wildlife Refuge. ARCTIC TERN - 6/20 (Costilla) 1 first year bird at Smith Lake. Seen well in flight and sitting. Forster's Tern - 6/20 (Costilla) 3 (2 adults, 1 first year) at Smith Lake. Black Tern - 6/20 (Costilla) 1 at Smith Lake. Hepatic Tanager - 6/20 (Huerfano) 1 male at the usual spot south of Walsenburg. Cole Wild Loveland -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] Larimer County 6/9 to 6/11
There are several good birds I have observed over the past 3 days in Larimer County, they include: Great Egret 6/10 and 6/11 - 1 bird seen at Kechter Pit (Gravel Pit on the SW side of I-25 and Harmony) Snowy Egret 6/11 - 1 bird seen at Kechter Pit. White-rumped Sandpiper 6/11 - 1 bird seen at Strauss Cabin on the north side of Strauss Cabin Road just north of Harmony. This is the same area that Steve Mlodinow saw one a week or two ago. I am assuming this is a different bird as I have been checking that location fairly consistently for the past month trying to find one there as the habitat looks good. Caspian Tern 6/10 and 6/11 - 2 birds yesterday and 1 seen today at Kechter Pit, Nick Komar saw one diving in a small pond today just east of I-25 directly across from this area. Red-eyed Vireo 6/11 - 1 singing on private property while Nick and I were doing a bird survey. This property is in Laporte and it has a lot of great riparian habitat next to the Poudre River. Yellow-throated Warbler 6/9 - Singing in a row of trees 100 yards south of Cattail Pond. Ovenbird 6/11 - 1 bird singing on territory at the private ranch near Laporte. Rose-breasted Grosbeak 6/11 - 1 adult male seen at the Laporte private ranch with an unknown female (Rose-breasted, Black-headed, or Hybrid). Also saw a male hybrid Rose-breasted x Black-headed Grosbeak. Indigo Bunting 6/11 - 1 male singing on territory at the Laporte private ranch. Bobolink 6/9 - At least 4 males and 2 females on territory just south and east of Cattail Pond. This is the 3rd year in a row I have had them at this location and also the 5th year out of the past 8 years. [cobirds] Highway 50 birding and more on 5/27
Katrina Stowasser and I started yesterday morning in Gunnison. We made several stops in the area. The best stop was at the Gunnison Water Treatment Plant (Gunnison County), which the best bird was a calling ALDER FLYCATCHER. Other interesting birds were Dusky Flycatcher, Willow Flycatcher, Wilson's Phalarope, and Virginia Rail. At Blue Mesa Reservoir there wasn't to much around, but a few things were American Avocet, Cinnamon Teal, and Franklin's Gulls. On the evening of the 26th we saw a western Purple Martin flying around the west side of the reservoir. We started to work our way towards Pueblo along Highway 50. We made several stops in Chaffee County. It was very birdy, but nothing of note until we were just about to leave Sands Lake when we noticed a strange bird flying towards us going from the east to the west. We quickly realized it was a small loon and with getting several field marks on it we realized it was indeed a breeding plummaged RED-THROATED LOON flying up stream. Just before seeing this bird we heard of the BAY-BREASTED WARBLER and as it would be a life bird for the both of us we decided to go try for it. When we got to Colorado City (Pueblo County) with the help from Brandon Percival for directions we found the bird after about a 15 minute search. We stayed looking for the other interesting birds reported there recently with no luck, but I was able to get some great photos of the warbler. We then decided we needed to work our way back north and realized that there was a report of the Canada Warbler at Last Chance (Washington County), so even though it was a little out of our way it could be a good trip. The only bird of interest that we saw at Last Chance was an American Redstart. At Thompson Ranch (Lincoln County) about 20 minutes south of Last Chance we ran into a group of birders that said they had just saw / a few still looking at the VERMILION FLYCATCHER that was reported there earlier in the week and we were able to get a good look at it. The only other good birds that we saw at this location was a Broad-winged Hawk and a Barn Owl. [cobirds] Magnolia Warbler Larimer 5/23
This morning (5/23) Katrina Stowasser and I found a singing Magnolia Warbler at the Environmental Learning Center in Larimer County. After crossing the the bridge just north of the parking lot go right at the trail, just about 50 yards before the trail splits again the bird was in a bush just behind a very large Cottonwood tree. It has occasionally gone to different trees, but it keeps going back to this bush. While watching this bird we also heard a singing Black-and-white Warbler. [cobirds] Cherry Creek Cormorant 4/10
This morning (4/10) Katrina Stowasser and I decided to go look for the Neotropic Cormorant at Cherry Creek Reservoir in Arapahoe County. We searched several hours before finding it in the marina and I have no idea where it was before then. We didn't find anything else of interest. On our way home we made several stops. The only bird of interest was a male Barrow's Goldeneye at Luna Reservoir in Weld County. To see the photos go to my website: http://www.pbase.com/birdingwild1/2011_photos. Yesterday (4/8), Katrina and I did a morning of birding the only bird of interest that we found was a Vesper Sparrow at Fossil Creek Reservoir. [cobirds] Black-legged Kittiwake - Weld County 4/7
Katrina Stowasser and I went looking for rare gulls in Weld County today (4/7). The first stop was Black Hollow where we refound that probable 1st year Glaucous-winged Gull, 1st year Mew Gull, 2 adult Lesser Black-backed Gulls, and 1 1st year Thayer's Gull. There were not any interesting gulls at Drake Lake and we were not able to refind the Swamp Sparrow. Our next stop was Windsor Lake where we just found and currently looking at a 1st year BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE flying around the middle of the lake. [cobirds] Red Rocks, Jefferson County 3/20
Katrina Stowasser and I decided to go down to Red Rocks this morning to find her a bunch of life birds. We then decided to work our way to Walden Ponds to see the Tundra Swan that has been there for several weeks. Highlights include: Red Rocks - Jefferson Golden-crowned Sparrow - 1 White-throated Sparrow - 2 Harris's Sparrow - 1 Curve-billed Thrasher - 1 White-throated Swift - 1 Peregrine Falcon - 2 Prairie Falcon - 2 Standley Lake (Jefferson) Great Western Reservoir (Broomfield), and Baseline Reservoir (Boulder) didn't have much of interest. Walden Ponds - Boulder (only looked at the pond by the parking lot) Tundra Swan - 1 Bonaparte's Gull - 2 (basic plumage) Greater Yellowlegs - 1 Hybrid duck was still there, I am still thinking Green-winged Teal x Northern Pintail. [cobirds] Winter Wrens - Larimer County
This morning (3/4) I did a little birding around the Environmental Learning Center in Larimer County. I was able to refind two of the Winter Wrens that have been hanging around the area this winter. I heard a bird call twice while in the area that sounded very similar to that of a Carolina Wren. Nick Komar and I heard this same call about a month ago, but just like today it was a little to far away to hear it well enough to say for sure. A few migrants in the area today was a Common Grackle and a Killdeer. [cobirds] Snow Buntings - Larimer County
While spending several hours walking around the Timnath Walmart parking lot at the northeast corner of I-25 and Harmony (my job is a cart pusher there) I noticed lots of sparrows and larks flying towards the south. I carefully started looking and listening to the flocks. After about 8 flocks of Horned Larks and Lapland Longspurs I heard and then saw a flock of about 15 Snow Buntings. I heard the long down-slurred rattle call a couple of times, but most of the birds were giving a clear chew call. The birds were white heavy sparrows with short tails and black wingtips. Horned Larks and Lapland Longspurs are very uncommon for this area, so it was very surprising seeing and hearing all these birds. After about 3:00 the snow stopped as did the flocks of songbirds. I ended up with about 150 Horned Larks, 10 Lapland Longspurs, and these 15 Snow Buntings. [cobirds] Juniper Titmouse - Larimer County
This morning (2/22), I heard and then saw a Juniper Titmouse in with a small flock of Black-capped Chickadees at Horseshoe Lake. To get to the location from N Monroe Ave turn east on Knobcone Pl and then north on Elm Ct. I parked at the end of this roundabout looking at some of the many gulls on the lake when I first heard and then saw it at a house on the east side of Elm. It then flew a few houses east and I couldn't relocate it. There are a couple flocks of Mountain Chickadees in the area also. [cobirds] Cinnamon Teal - Larimer County
This afternoon, 2/19, I stopped by Cattail Pond (Larimer) on my way to work. While there I found 2 drake Cinnamon Teal in with a flock of Green-winged Teal. Ducks there today that were not there yesterday morning include Northern Pintail, Gadwall, Green-winged Teal, Lesser Scaup, and Bufflehead. With all this it appears ducks (and perhaps other birds) are on the move. The only other Cinnamon Teal I have heard of in Colorado so far this year is from an ebird report of 2 in Chaffee County on the 14th. [cobirds] Flyover Common Redpoll 1/12 Larimer
Yesterday while walking through the Timnath Wal-Mart parking lot (intersection of I-25 and Harmony) I heard a bird flying over that I had recognized, but only heard once or twice before. It immediately came to me that it sounded like some Common Redpolls that Joey Kellner and I heard a few years ago at Jumbo Reservoir. After getting home late last night I listened to recordings on xeno-canto.org and found the call, which is how Joey and I got positive ID on the birds a few years ago. [cobirds] Varied Thrush - Loveland
Hello, This morning (1/1/11) I found a Varied Thrush on my property in SW Loveland which is Larimer County. I then watched it fly towards the east. I found out that a Varied Thrush was seen a little over a mile east of my house today about 30 minutes after my observation. This could be the same bird. I will post if I see it again as I am not sure if this bird will be chasable. If anyone would like to look for it please contact me privately by email. [cobirds] Iceland Gull in Loveland 12/5
A 1st winter Iceland Gull just flew from a small pond on the east side of Namaqua Road in SouthEast Loveland (Larimer). It was photographed in poor lighting by Nick Komar and myself. Nick saw the bird while driving to my house to pick me up this morning. It looked very similar to the bird that I saw at Windsor Reservoir on Wed, I would guess it is the same bird. While unsuccessfully trying to refind it at Rist Benson Reservoir we saw an adult Thayer's Gull. [cobirds] Union reservoir birds
Just to clarify as of 1:45 the Black-legged Kittiwake was still being seen by birders. The swan which was with geese at the sailboat launch area at the east end of the lake (was at the west end) is a Tundra Swan. The 2 juv Long-tailed Ducks were still present as well as a Common Loon and 2 Thayer's Gulls (adult and juvenile). The dark 'M' on the back of the kittiwake was much less prominent than a typical first winter kittiwake (appearing almost absent in certain angles). The gray nape patch was visible, but the black neck band appeared absent, suggesting that the bird is a subadult in its second winter. [cobirds] Black-legged Kittiwake - Windsor Reservoir
Today (12/4) after Union Reservoir, Nick Komar and I went to Timnath Reservoir in Larimer County, but to our surprise there were very few birds, as well as the Weld County Landfill, and then Black Hollow Reservoir was frozen. We decided to go look for the interesting gulls at Windsor Reservoir in Weld County. There was thousands of gulls, but it looked like there had been a large turnover since I was there last on Wed. We were able to find 1 juvenile BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE, 3 Lesser Black-backed Gulls (2 adults, 1 1st winter), and 1 1st winter Thayer's Gull. There was also Ross's and Snow Geese as well as about 5,000 Common Mergansers on the lake. Today most of the birds, including the Kittiwake, was on the south side of the reservoir. [cobirds] Morgan and Weld Counties 12/1
Cheri Orwig and I ventured out to Morgan and Weld Counties today, 12/1. Highlights include: Jackson Lake State Park - Morgan County Eastern Screech-Owl - 1 Long-eared Owl - 8 Yellow-rumped Warbler - 1 Myrtle GLAUCOUS-WINGED GULL - 1 1st cycle bird. We watched fly half way around the lake starting close to us at the dam on the south side and we lost it somewhere around the state wildlife area on the north side. It appeared to be a good bird, but can't say for sure that it didn't have at least a little bit of Herring Gull genes in it from the looks we had, wish I could have seen it on the ground. Snow Goose - 6 Mountain Chickadee - 2 Crow Valley Campground - Weld County Mountain Chickadee - 1 Brown Creeper - 1 Pawnee Center (don't remember what it is called, but just north of Crow Valley) - Weld County Hermit Thrush - 1 Snow Bunting - 1 flyover Driving roads north of Jackson Lake and north of Crow Valley we were looking for Gyrfalcons, found lots of raptors (no Gryfalcons). Windsor Reservoir - Weld County (Unsuccessfully chased a Yellow-billed Loon) ICELAND GULL - 1 1st winter, Kumlien's (new early record for CO?) Thayers Gull - 4, 1 adult 3 1st cycle Lesser Black-backed Gull - 7 adults Greater White-fronted Goose - 3 Snow Goose - 20 Ross's Goose - 5 Cole Wild Loveland -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] Brant Post
Sorry I accidentally hit send. The Brant was in a very large flock of geese on the east side of the lake. There were several thousand white cheeked geese with over 50,000 Snow and Ross's Geese. The Brant is a juvenile, but be careful looking through all juvenile 'blue' geese as they can look similar. I was also able to find a Black Scoter and a 1st year Thayer's Gull. [cobirds] Larimer County Lakes 11/6
Cheri Orwig and I spend the morning (11/5) checking several lakes in Larimer County. There was a big turnover from yesterday. Here are the highlights: North Poudre Reservoir #3 Common Loon - 1 Cobb Lake Common Loon - 1 Timnath Reservoir Mew Gull - 1 adult Thayer's Gull - 1 1st winter Lesser Black-backed Gull - 4 adults Barrow's Goldeneye - 1 male Fossil Creek Reservor EURASIAN WIGEON - 1 male continues from yesterday Common Loon - 2 Pacific Loon - 1 Boyd Lake Pacific Loon - 1 (there was 0 loons that was seen at this location yesterday (no Commons or Red-throated)) Horseshoe Lake Red-necked Grebe - 1 Cole Wild Loveland -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] Fossil Creek Reservoir and Boyd Lake (Larimer County)
Cheri Orwig and I went to Fossil Creek Reservoir in search of the Eurasian Wigeon found by Josh Bruening today. We ran into Larry Griffin and Sue Kinney while we were at Fossil Creek also. Fossil Creek Reservoir EURASIAN WIGEON - 1 male, it had rufous sides with some gray. Appeared to be a male molting from nonbreeding to breeding plumage. Hopefully will have some identifiable photos on my website later this evening. Great find Josh!! Surf Scoter - 1 juvenile Common Loon - 1 Could not locate the Black Scoters, but not saying they were not there. Boyd Lake, as the light was fading Gulls - Several hundred coming into roost, but all I could identify was Ring-billed, California, and Herring. Common Loon - 10+ I saw a bird that was a long ways away that appeared to be a Red-throated Loon. It was loon shaped, with a long body and a short thick neck. It had had a overall a small bird (about the same size as the nearby Western Grebes), small bill (appeared to be upturned), the body and head was very white. It looked more like a loon than a grebe. I didn't get a very long look at it before it dove and then I decided to try to get closer and could not refind it. It was somewhere towards the southern side of the lake and I saw it from the most northern part of the state park. Tomorrow morning Cheri and I are planning on checking these lakes and others in the area. If anyone else is interested in joining please let me know. We are planning to have about a half day trip starting just after 7:00, but I haven't decided what the first stop will be. If you are interested please call me at 970-232-5368. [cobirds] Chihuahuan Raven 10/27 Larimer County
On this windy day, 10/27, I decided to check lot of lakes and reservoirs in Larimer County. I didn't have to many birds of interest, but the best bird of the day was a Chihuahuan Raven flying over Timnath Reservoir. Yesterday, I checked a few lakes also. Birds and lakes of interest: 10/26 (southwest Loveland) Lonetree Reservoir Lot of grebes and gulls (the later coming to roost), this lake should be checked regularly. Dry Creek Reservoir A ton of diving ducks. I would not be surprised if a scoter or interesting loon shows up here this fall. 10/27 Horseshoe Reservoir Red-breasted Merganser - 1 female (previously reported) Bonaparte's Gull - 1 adult (previously reported) Boyd Lake Common Loon - 2 Fossil Creek Reservoir and Swede Lake Thousands of dabbling ducks, perhaps something rare like a Eurasian Wigeon or American Black Duck will show up here this fall. Timnath Reservoir Lesser Black-backed Gull - 3 adults CHIHUAHUAN RAVEN - 1 flew from the east to the west (against the wind) along the south shore. I got it in my scope and it filled up my scope view. When I first saw it I thought it was an American Crow. It had a short, thick bill. The bill had very little (less than 1/4 of the bill) showing beyond the nasal bristles. It had a fairly rounded tail (very slightly wedge shaped). The wings were shorter than and a little wider than I am use to for Common Raven. Unfortunately, if I would have been carrying my camera with me I would have gotten a great photo. Other locations that I checked that didn't have anything of interest: Duck Lake, Strauss Cabin Archery Range Pond, Deadman Lake, Lake Loveland, Donath Reservoir, Cattail Pond, Bud Mielke Reservoir, Ryan's Gulch Reservoir, Lon Hagler Reservoir, Boedecker Reservoir, and Rist Benson Reservoir. I stopped by several Larimer County reservoirs this afternoon and Timnath Resevoir was the only reservoir that had anything of interest. Timnath is very low and with a scope everything can be seen from the park in the se side of the lake. Below are the highlights: Black-bellied Plover - 2 AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER - 1 in the NE side of the lake, it opened its wing a couple of seconds after finding it. I was not able to see any white wing stripe and it had an all dark rump and tail. This was the 400th species of bird that I have seen in CO this year. [cobirds] Eastern CO day 2 (9/3)
The total number of birds were down compared to yesterday (9/3), it could be because of the wind and/or that it got about 15 degrees hotter today. However, I was still able to see some good birds. While scoping the shoreline of McIntosh Lake (Boulder County) I found a single BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER in the northwest corner of the lake. I got a good, but brief view of it as it walked into a small cove. I was not able to refind it after that in about 20 minutes of scanning. It appeared to be an adult. The only other two shorebird species present was Killdeer and Spotted Sandpiper. The Pacific Loon was still present close to the dam. [cobirds] Yellow-billed Loon: Gunnison County 6/20
Late afternoon yesterday (6/20) I was driving by the outlet at Blue Mesa Reservoir (Gunnison County) when I saw a loon, so I pulled off at the first pulloff east of the east bridge at the eastern end of the reservoir. When I got it in my scope I realized it was a YELLOW-BILLED LOON in Basic Plumage. I took some pictures of it in bad light and one of them was identifiable. The photo can be viewed at http://www.pbase.com/image/125806996. I am curious how many inland summer records in the lower 48 there are for this species? There was also a female Red-breasted Merganser at the same location. Cole Wild Loveland -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] Weld County Fallout 6/8
This afternoon I decided to chase the Prairie Warbler photographed yesterday at Crow Valley. The mosquitoes were awful and the water level was still fairly high, so there are lots of good places that I couldn't get to. The highlights were: Crow Valley (Weld County) - 1 PRAIRIE WARBLER (refound) - Singing. From the picnic area walk south to the fence, from there walk west until the first tree (a very large tree that you can walk under), it was staying in this area. - 1 Red-eyed Vireo - Same location as the Prairie Warbler. - 1 BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO - I got a good close view of it flying into the row of trees along the creek just south of the Prairie Warbler tree. I could not find it after it landed. It appeared smaller then a Yellow-billed Cuckoo, it was whitish underneath and brown on the uppersides. There was no rufous anywhere on the bird. - 1 Cordilleran Flycatcher - Same area as the Cuckoo. - 1 GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER - Singing. It was where the creek goes under the fence on the south west side of the campground. - 1 Northern Waterthrush - The same location as the Golden-winged Warbler. Norma's Grove (Weld County: On CR 100, just east of CR 57) - 1 WOOD THRUSH - With several Swainson's Thurshes along the creek on the north side of the road. - 1 'Western' Veery - Along the creek on south side of the road. [cobirds] Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Larimer
I heard a Yellow-billed Cuckoo calling this afternoon on my property in SW Loveland (Larimer). It called for about 2 minutes and I never heard it again. I wasn't able to try to chase it down. If anyone would like to try for it please let me know. I will post again if I hear it or even see. Like Dave Leatherman mentioned a couple of days ago, this is a fairly rare bird for Larimer County. On another note, I can't believe the numbers of reptiles and amphibians I have seen and heard on my property the past 3 days. They include: 1 Snapping Turtle, 3 Painted Turtles, 8 Western Terrestrial Garter Snakes (all about 6-8 inches long), 1 Plains Garter Snake, 1 Bullsnake, 1 Racer (eating at Western Terrestrial Garter Snake), at least 12 Western Chorus Frogs, and at least 18 Woodhouse's Toad. [cobirds] Larimer / Jackson County Owls
Last night (3/28) Sol Miller and I decided to headed up towards Cameron Pass last night to try our luck at Boreal Owl. While on our way we saw an Osprey at Namaqua Park in SE Loveland. We decided we would try to quickly see the White-winged Crossbills in the Grandview Cemetery. We were able to watch the female on the nest and also heard the male fly north from the same tree. We also heard a group of Sandhill Cranes fly over and we also saw a Great Horned Owl on a nest (owl number 1 for the trip). We started up Risk Canyon at dusk and quickly found a Northern Pygmy-Owl in lower Rist Canyon sitting at the top of an aspen, we watched it for about 15 minutes before heading on. Our next stop was the parking lot at Joe Wright Reservoir, but when we got there the wind was howling and we were not able to hear anything. We decided to try the Jackson County side and there was no wind at all. Between the Moose Visitor Center and the pass we heard at least 7 Boreal Owls calling spontaneously, one of he owls we were able to see the silhouette fly across the road, but we were not able to see it after it landed. On our way back towards Fort Collins we had 1 Northern Saw-whet Owl on the Pennock Pass road and another in upper Risk Canyon. Back in SW Loveland we decided to try for Eastern Screech-Owl. We were not able to find any screech-owls, but we heard 4 more Great Horned Owls. We ended up with 15 individual owls of 4 different species and every owl on the trip was calling spontaneously. If anyone wants better details to the owl locations please contact me privately. Earlier in the day I had 2 White-tailed Ptarmigan by one of the pulloffs on the Summit County side of Loveland Pass. We were not able to see it though. Clark's Grebe - 1 Horned Grebe - 2 Weld County: Erie Landfill A couple thousand gulls. We could not find anything rare, but they were so far away that we could have missed something. Luna Reservoir There were lots of ducks on the south side of the reservoir. Re: [cobirds] Red-shouldered hawk Yes
My brother (Cody) and I found the Red-shouldered Hawk about 5 minutes after Larry Modesit pointed us in the right direction (thanks Larry). We found it by going to the bench at Kodak SWA that Bryan Guarente suggested yesterday in his post. Immediately after we got to the bench we saw the bird in a tree not to far south of where we were standing. I got a decent picture of the hawk from there. After a few minutes of us watching the hawk it flew further south into some trees at the edge of the field. Pictures of the hawk and the Snowy Owl can be seen at http://www.pbase.com/birdingwild1/2010_photos. Good luck to everyone that decides to chase these and other birds this year. Cole Wild Loveland

[cobirds] Northern CO Birding
At Timnath Reservoir Nick Komar and I refound the RED KNOT, this time it was in the SE corner of the reservoir. While scanning I found a RED PHALAROPE swimming by itself out in the middle of the reservoir, there are some Red-necked and Wilson's Phalaropes on the lake also. Then we decided to go to Phillips County, where we spent most of the day. Birding was very slow out there, but we were still able to find a bunch of shorebirds. The best was a juvenile SANDERLING at county road 2 and county 29. A few other birds of interest at this location was Pectoral Sandpiper and Semipalmated Plover.
