  Mouse-wheeling sliders moves them the wrong way.

Status in Ayatana Design:

Status in Indicator Display Objects:

Status in “gnome-control-center” package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in “gtk+3.0” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Steps:

  1) Open the control center and open User Interface.
  2) Move the mouse pointer to the Launcher icon size slider.
  3) Scroll the mouse wheel upwards.
  4) Notice that the slider moves to the left.
  5) Scroll the mouse wheel downwards
  6) Notice that the slider moves to the right.

  This is opposite of how all other sliders work, including the volume
  control, for instance.

  Desired Solution:

  The logical incremental direction is left to right (horizontally) and
  bottom to top (vertically).

  Vertically (e.g.: with scrollbars), to move the thumb towards the
  bottom, we move the finger (on top of the mouse wheel) towards us.

  Hence the same movement, when we have horizontal slider, should move
  the thumb from right to left.

  On my current Precise build the Launcher tile in the Appearance panel
  and the slider in the Sound indicator work fine.

Bug description:
  Since switching to Ubuntu 11.10, the way unity notifies you when a window has
been updated has deteriorated.
  - In 11.04, the upper left corner of the screen was turned blue. As a result
you could see that *some* window needed your attention, and start finding it.
This is no longer the case.
  - In 11.04, the window switcher showed window icons. As a result, for
applications that switch the icon when some event happens, you could find the
window firing the event very quickly. This is no longer the case.

  I'd invite you to use skype with multiple parallel conversations to
  find just how many messages you miss because of these changes. Now I'm
  not hung up on the exact way 11.04 did these things, but the state in
  11.10 is so much worse that it's becoming unusable.

  Perhaps that's a feature, but I just can't understand how it can be
  usable or can't be configurable.

  If I select a category, and want to see another one, the second
  results are mixed with the first results.

  In my view, that behaviour should be at least configurable, since
  jumping from category to category means that I have to unselect a
  previous category, to see only the results from only one category.
  That's just not productive, since it's bound with more clicks and
  takes more time to find an application.

  If I know the name of the application I could type it ofcourse, but
  what if I don't know the name - it's too confusing for new users.

  Left-clicking a launcher icon does at least 8 different things

Bug description:
  I've been using Unity (Natty and now Oneiric) for a while now and
  really like it, but have found window management via the launcher to
  be quite problematic, namely because when there are multiple instances
  of a program open, a slew of things can happen. I'd like first to lay
  out how the currently system works and then lay out some of the
  problems it causes, pointing out the inconsistencies within that
  system along the way. Finally, I'd like to propose a simpler system
  for what left-clicking on a program icon on the launcher does.
  Apologies if this has been discussed before (or if this is the wrong
  place for this report), but I haven't found a conversation/bug that
  directly addresses the complexity and multiple inconsistencies of the
  current system as I hope to do.

  If you left-click a program icon in the launcher the following things will
happen:

  Case #1 - There is no instance of a program open. Pressing the icon
  opens an instance of that program.

  Case #2 - If there is one instance of a program running, but the focus
  is on another program, pressing the icon will bring it forward -
  whether it is minimized or not.

  Case #3 - If there is one instance of a program running and it has
  focus, clicking the launcher icon does nothing at all.

  Case #4 - If there are multiple instances of a program running and the
  focus is already on one instance, then all instances are shown in
  scale mode and the user can pick one which becomes the focus. The ones
  left unchosen are not brought forward - it doesn't matter if they are
  minimized or not, they stay where they are.

  Case #5 - If there are multiple instances of a program running, the
  focus is not on any of them, and they are unminimized, then all
  instances are brought forward above all other windows, the last used
  one to the top. Worthy of note is what happens if you go a step
  further: if the one just brought into focus is minimized or closed the
  others return to their previous positions - either behind other
  programs' windows if opened, or they disappear if they were originally
  minimized. This is perhaps the system's most baffling behavior. You
  can actually do some confusing things here. (E.g. Use the top window
  just opened, then click on one right below it, then minimize them
  both. The other instances remaining that were summoned upon clicking
  the launcher icon and are currently on top will actually all go back
  to their previous state from before you initially clicked the launcher
  icon - even if it was hours ago!)

  Case #6 - If there are multiple instances of a program running, the
  focus is not on any of them, and some are minimized, then the
  unminimized ones will be brought forward - EVEN IF the last one used
  was a minimized one. The same weird behavior of windows changing
  positions later, as seen in case #5, also applies here.

  Case #7 - If there are multiple instances of a program running and all
  instances are minimized, they are *all* brought forward - sort of.
  They are all opened and displayed, but if there are any other program
  windows open, only a single one of them (the last one minimized) will
  be in front of those other programs' windows. Unlike in cases #5 and
  #6, if that one window is minimized/closed, the others stay sitting
  there, and do not return to their pre-launcher-icon-click position.

  N.B. The above cases deal only with using a single workspace! There
  are actually several more possible cases if you have applications
  spread across more than one, but on the whole they stay within the
  same paradigm. If you have multiple instances on multiple workspaces,
  clicking on the icon generally deals only with instances on that
  single workspace. However, when you click in a way that invokes the
  scale view you will see all the windows from all workspaces... This in
  and of itself might be inconsistent, but for now let's leave how
  workspaces work out of it.

  I will, however, include one more case, because it directly
  contradicts what happens in #7:

  Case #8: If there are multiple instances of a program running and all
  instances are minimized, but you click the icon from a workspace
  without any of the programs running, scale is not invoked. Rather, the
  view is first shifted to the workspace in which the last instance was

  If Sticky Edge was a well-known term amongst people who use computer

  The Displays panel includes a Sticky Edge switch.

  If Sticky Edge was a well-known term amongst people who use computer
  displays (like Sticky Keys is for disabled people, for example),
  this might make sense. But it isn't, and doesn't.

  Unfortunately I can't suggest a replacement, because I don't know what
  Sticky Edge does either.

  The option for setting up accounts like facebook is disturbing. The term
broadcast account is not clear for new user.
  We should replace 'broadcast' with 'social network'

  This was pointed out in a Canonical's user study about the top
  showstoppers for new users:

  http://design.canonical.com/2010/06/when-new-users-first-encounter-

  3. Use of jargon

  During their exploration of Ubuntu, participants encountered words
  they didn’t know, or didn’t expect, or terms that they had no use for:
  examples included ‘Gwibber’,’broadcast’,’terminal’ and ‘server’. “You
  lose me with ‘terminal’ and ‘server’.” one person said.

  The use of such specialised language significantly influenced how
  users perceived the brand and the intended audience for Ubuntu. Some
  of the participants wondered whether Ubuntu was meant really for
  expert users rather than for them.

Bug description:
  To make Unity more accessible, there should be more options for the
  global menu. Such as disabling it, or only enabling it for fully
  maximized windows.

  Here are two user stories with three scenarios:

  Pete mostly uses his netbook and really likes the way the global menu
  is integrated and saves him the much needed vertical space, but when
  he is working at his desktop, he finds himself constantly moving his
  mouse to the top of his screen to access the application's menu. Pete
  wishes there was a setting that would allow him to turn off the global
  menu for non-maximized applications that would still integrate the
  menu for applications that are fully maximized.

  John on the other hand, is a traditionalist. He most commonly works
  with multiple terminals and finds that the global menu just gets in
  his way. He also dislikes how the menu becomes hidden by default.
  Currently, the first thing he does after a fresh install, is remove
  the 'indicator-appmenu' package in order to completely remove the
  global menu from his install. John wishes there was a way to simply
  disable the global menu without having to remove a system package that
  could potentially cause a dependency issue later down the road.

  This is really more of a papercut than a bug, but I still think it
  represents a usability issue, especially for new users.

  Steps to reproduce:

  Open any application (non-maximized). Look at the title bar and/or
  application window. There is no application menu bar (File, Edit,
  etc.) displayed anywhere in the application window, and only the
  application title is visible in the top bar. The user does not
  necessarily know that mousing over the top bar will cause the menu bar
  to appear, and as the top bar is somewhat empty anyway, it seems like
  there would be plenty of space to have the menu bar always displayed,
  and no good reason not to. (i.e. like on OSX). This link also shows

Bug description:
  When using Unity on a screen with a large resolution (for example 1920x1200)
using the global menubar can result in excessive mouse and eye movement.
  For example, if the window is small and at the bottom-right corner of the
screen, to go to the menu you have to move your mouse to the top and then at
least somewhat to the left, and that can be a long way.
  What's worse, is that it happens to follow the cursor with your eyes too and
this has two drawbacks: one is that it is just more fatiguing, and the other is
that you go over any other window that is in the way and it has a lot of
potential for distraction.

  I think what should be done is making use of the extra space after the

  However, I can not find any real printer config tool in Natty running

  printers that I already know about. There's no Show printers shared

  Sadly, this kinda impacts my work and makes me less productive. So

  Ubuntu 11.04, Ubuntu 11.10, Ubuntu 12.04 beta

  1. Log in to Unity, and try to connect to a server: File Connect to
Server.
  2. Launch Firefox, and try to select an item from the Bookmarks menu.

  What happens:

  1. The File menu, and the rest of Nautilus's menus, are hidden by default.
  - Unless you mouse over it, the menu bar is blank.
  - When you mouse over it, the menus appear.

  2. The Bookmarks menu, and the rest of Firefox's menus, are hidden by
default.
  - Unless you mouse over it, the menu bar contains only the text Firefox Web
Browser, which isn't useful at all (especially, but not only, since the real
name of the application -- Mozilla Firefox -- is already present in the
window title bar).
  - When you mouse over it, the menus appear, partly but not completely
replacing the previous text: Firefox W File Edit View….

  What should happen: Menus should be visible by default, so that you
  can know that they exist without scrubbing the screen, and so that you
  can see where a menu is each time you aim for it.

  The current behavior has led some people (including, this week, one of
  my design colleagues) to conclude that Ubuntu applications don't have
  menus when they do. For example
  http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/opensource/gnome-shell-vs-ubuntu-
  unity-which-desktop-wins/2291: One of the most handy menu entries in
  GNOME (for me at least) is the Connect to Server entry in the Places
  menu. This allows the user to connect to nearly any type of server
  quickly and easily. The user can even connect to a Windows Share from
  here. In Unity - you won’t find that. In fact, you will be hard
  pressed to find any means to connect to a server in Ubuntu Unity.

  In bug 720424, Jono Bacon reported that when we did some developer
  tools usability testing last week and on some other occasions when I
  have had someone use Unity, I have noticed that some folks don't
  realize there is a menu there as it is not visible.

  This was confirmed by usability testing of Ubuntu 11.04, where 2 out
  of the 10 people who needed to use a menu item could not find the
  menus at all -- and of the 8 who did find them, 7 did so only when the
  window was maximized. https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-
  desktop/2011-April/002970.html (Usability testing results of Ubuntu
  11.10 have never been published, but this part of the design did not
  change.)

  Do not confuse this bug with bug 735233 (about adding an option for
  visibility) or bug 682788 (about reaching the menu on large screens).
  Adding any options would not fix this bug, which is about the default
  visibility.

  Usability: The application menu is hard to find in Natty

Bug description:
  I just tested Ubuntu 11.04 Alpha 2 a bit and I think for average users
  it may be very hard to find the menu of applications.

  Because the menu is hidden and only appears when the user hovers over
  the panel with the mouse, he can only find the menu, if he already
  knows that it is located there, which is an obvious contradiction.
  However, a user has almost no reason to try and hover the panel in his
  search for the menu, because it is not visually connected to the
  application at all.

  New users, who don't follow closely the development of Ubuntu, as well
  as users migrating from Windows will have a hard time finding the
  application menu. I would consider this a major usability regression.

  I know, that one might argue, that this is only valid the first time
  the user uses Ubuntu, but please note that there are a lot of users,
  who use the computer very seldomly or use Windows most of the time.
  (Perhaps it is necessary to mention, that I myself am a Linux-only
  user for over 10 years now)

  I don't really see a reason, why the menu shouldn't be visible all the
  time, regarding the vast amount of horizontal space in the panel,
  which is now just empty.

  Please think of someone near you, who doesn't use computers a lot,
  your parents or grand parents perhaps, and ask yourself honestly if
  they would get along easily with the current design.

  Atm it's quite simple to adjust on a per app basis whether to use the global

  This though is not an ideal solution, (if a 'solution' is even considered
needed), if it's is possible at some point to set to - maximized - use global

   that would work out well for all users

  It would also somewhat account for the possibility of some apps having
  missing menu options when it's menus are in the global menu

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 682788] Re: Global menu is not ergonomical on large screens

2012-04-23 Thread John Lea
** This bug is no longer a duplicate of bug 735233
   Option for persistent menus in AppMenu for focused application

** Summary changed:

- Global menu is not ergonomical on large screens
+ Improve Unity menus

** Description changed:

  Global menu in general (not only in Unity) is very unergonomic on large
  screens (see the attached screenshot) because if you have a small window
  somewhere near the low right corner you have to move the cursor all the
  way up to to panel to reach the menu. I understand why the global menu
  was used for the netbook edition (it saves space and most windows are
  maximized), but since Unity is intended to be for the desktop edition
  there should be an option to switch to the traditional position of the
  app menu. It would be welcomed by many desktop users.

  A commonly suggested solution is:
   [ ] Global Menu on
   [ ] Global Menu off
   [ ] Global Menu only for maximized windows
  The default is usually suggested as either the first (on) or last (on only
for maximized windows).

  -
  Desired change:

- Implement the 'Enhanced Menu' project for 12.10.
+ Implement the 'Enhanced Menu' project for 12.10. This project will
+ address the issue described in this bug and also issues described in the
+ duplicates of this bus. Note this is the 'official' bug that tracks the
+ implementation of this project.

  The following options will be added to 'System Settings/Appearance':

  ---
  Menus
  Location:Global/Local
  Visibility:  Hidden/Always displayed
  ---

  More details to follow during the 12.10 cycle... ;-)

  The new Show Desktop application ( not on the desktop by default,
  but installable from the software centre ) is used to minimize all
  open windows. With this in mind, I think it's fairly intuitive to drag
  an application's icon to the Show Desktop icon and having all windows
  of the application minimized. Not only is this pretty intuitive
  (probably), it also adds the feature of being able to minimize all
  application windows at once.

  automatically adding newly installed applications makes the launcher
  unusable

Status in Ayatana Design:

Status in Unity:
  Won't Fix
Status in “unity” package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  This got spawned from bug 955147.
  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SoftwareCenter/LaunchingApplications decided
  to add newly installed applications to the launcher by default.

  This new concept essentially admits defeat that new users do not know
  about the dash. This started last cycle with moving the control-center
  icon into the launcher (thereby making it overflow on netbook
  screens), which already spawned a large discussion. Now this proposes
  to throw all limits over board and add tons of new icons to the
  launcher; NB that we make it very easy to install lots of new apps,
  and we go through great lengths to make it possible to create, find,
  and install third-party apps even post-release.

  Now, this approach works around a temporary 5 minute question (where
  does that app go?), not by giving a 5-minute answer (quick tutorial
  or hint application which opens up the first couple of times), but by
  essentially redefining what the launcher is: a place where all
  applications go. This has several problems:

   * Our launcher just isn't built for that -- it's efficient and useful
  for up to 10 to 20 icons, depending on your screen size. But after
  that it folds, and exponentially gets harder to use. It doesn't have
  text to describe the applications, does not have a stable order, and
  is just one-dimensional.

   * It does not have most of the applications that are installed by
  default -- how do people find that?

   * It teachs the wrong thing -- that the launcher is the place for all
  apps. It drives people further away from the dash, thereby aggravating
  the learning problem instead of solving it.

   * It optimizes a thing which represents 0.5% of the workload [1]
  at the expense of making the other 99.5% much worse.

  The spec itself points out that this relies on heavy users removing
  unwanted launchers. Given how the launcher works, anyone who installs
  more than ~ 10 apps is a heavy user, i. e. quite a large part of
  users.

  The flaw in that spec is the conclusion it draws from the fact that
  users are not able to figure out how the dash works: You rely on users
  being able to remove apps again, but then they would again need to use
  the dash to start these applications, a capability you just denied
  them.

  So in summary, this turns the launcher into something like the app launcher
that e. g. Android has -- place for all application. But as it's not built for
this and there are no improvements for at least mitigating the effects of this
change.

  Making the launcher useful to hold an arbitrary number of apps
  requires it to become two-dimensional, sorted, searchable, and touch
  friendly. We already have that -- the dash. So if we want to go that
  direction, could we just not use the dash as we have it, and instead
  change how to invoke it?

  [1] Assuming a very pessimistic scenario: using Ubuntu for two hours a day
for a year, and 50% not finding out how the dash works in 5 minutes.

Status in “unity” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:

This link also shows
  the problem:

  It does not seem sensible to keep the menu bar hidden except when the

  Somewhat relatedly, if a window is maximized and then un-maximized,

  this is a bug, but it actually represents what seems to be a more

  have a menu or not ?

  For exemple, you are a newbie. You are opening Firefox, where is the

  top of the screen.

  I think what should be done is making use of the extra space after the
  title of the application. The title should be first, and after that,
  the global menu. If there is not enough space, just show what can be
  shown on the extra space (the lasts entries of the menu, and the
  firsts ones hidden)

  I know this is really confusing, so I send with all that ugly text a
  little picture of what I have in mind.

  By the way, it's not meat to be perfectly like my mockup, but the
  idea is to make the menu more easily discoverable and make use of the
  not used space (the menu could be aligned right or track the window to
  make use of this extra space)

  However, I can not find any real printer config tool in Natty running

  Sadly, this kinda impacts my work and makes me less productive. So
  was the gnome print config removed? Or is it hidden somewhere that I

  Usability: The application menu is hard to find in Natty

Status in Ayatana Design:

Status in Unity:

Status in “unity” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:

  In Unity, the menu is moved out to the top of the screen, hidden

Bug description:
  Global menu in general (not only in Unity) is very unergonomic on
  large screens (see the attached screenshot) because if you have a
  small window somewhere near the low right corner you have to move the
  cursor all the way up to to panel to reach the menu. I understand why
  the global menu was used for the netbook edition (it saves space and
  most windows are maximized), but since Unity is intended to be for the
  desktop edition there should be an option to switch to the traditional
  position of the app menu. It would be welcomed by many desktop users.

  A commonly suggested solution is:
   [ ] Global Menu on
   [ ] Global Menu off
   [ ] Global Menu only for maximized windows
  The default is usually suggested as either the first (on) or last (on only
for maximized windows).

  -
  Desired change:

  Implement the 'Enhanced Menu' project for 12.10.

  The following options will be added to 'System Settings/Appearance':

  ---
  Menus
  Location:Global/Local
  Visibility:  Hidden/Always displayed
  ---

  More details to follow during the 12.10 cycle... ;-)

  Global Menu Lacks Customizability

Status in Ayatana Design:
  New
Status in The Application Menu:
  New
Status in Unity:
  New
Status in “unity” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

John wishes there was a way to simply
  disable the global menu without having to remove a system package that
  could potentially cause a dependency issue later down the road.

  global menu does not appear until mouse-over

Status in “unity” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:

This link also shows
  the problem:

  It is extremely user-UN-friendly to hide the app menus by default. Normally I
can see the menu I want to click and the just move the mouse to the

the top (or press the alt key), search for the menu and then relocate the mouse

visible to the left of the menu and should have a fixed width, say 300px. It
could look like this:

  To unveil the the full name of the window, just click on the name and

  It does not seem sensible to keep the menu bar hidden except when the

  Somewhat relatedly, if a window is maximized and then un-maximized,

  this is a bug, but it actually represents what seems to be a more

Bug description:
  When using Unity on a screen with a large resolution (for example 1920x1200)
using the global menubar can result in excessive mouse and eye movement.
  For example, if the window is small and at the bottom-right corner of the
screen, to go to the menu you have to move your mouse to the top and then at
least somewhat to the left, and that can be a long way.
  What's worse, is that it happens to follow the cursor with your eyes too and
this has two drawbacks: one is that it is just more fatiguing, and the other is
that you go over any other window that is in the way and it has a lot of
potential for distraction.

  This was discussed and acknowledged during an UDS-O session:

  While on smaller displays, having app menus in the global menu works
  out well, on larger displays this is proving to be a bit unhandy and
  most likely will not be generally well received.

  Atm it's quite simple to adjust on a per app basis whether to use the global
menu or not though clearly a config tool would be better.
  This though is not an ideal solution, (if a 'solution' is even considered
needed), if it's is possible at some point to set to - maximized - use global
  unmaxed -keep in app
   that would work out well for all users

  It would also somewhat account for the possibility of some apps having
  missing menu options when it's menus are in the global menu

  ---

  More details to follow during the 12.10 cycle... ;-)

  Adding any options would not fix this bug, which is about the default
  visibility.

  For exemple, you are a newbie. You are opening Firefox, where is the

  I think what should be done is making use of the extra space after the
  title of the application. The title should be first, and after that,
  the global menu. If there is not enough space, just show what can be
  shown on the extra space (the lasts entries of the menu, and the

  I know this is really confusing, so I send with all that ugly text a
  little picture of what I have in mind.

  By the way, it's not meat to be perfectly like my mockup, but the
  idea is to make the menu more easily discoverable and make use of the
  not used space (the menu could be aligned right or track the window to
  make use of this extra space)

  In previous versions of Ubuntu, I can configure printing quite easily
  by hitting the Administration/Printer menu. This is kinda important
  because there are some things I have to set there to be able to
  connect to network shared printers on other hosts in the office.

  However, I can not find any real printer config tool in Natty running
  Unity. The best I can find is a Printing app that lets me add
  printers that I already know about. There's no Show printers shared
  on other hosts option similar to functionality that was present in
  Maverick, so I can't scan the office network and actually print
  anything.

  Sadly, this kinda impacts my work and makes me less productive. So
  was the gnome print config removed? Or is it hidden somewhere that I
  don't know about, or was this functionality removed?

Title:
  HUD - HUD offers search results from app indicators more often than
  from currently focused application

Status in Ayatana Design:
  Triaged
Status in The Application Menu:
  New
Status in Unity:
  Confirmed
Status in “unity” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  When using the HUD, search results are always reduced to menu items in
  the keyboard or network application indicators, irrespective of what
  application has the focus.

  Steps to reproduce:
  1. Start Firefox
  2. Press ALT to open the HUD: the HUD search box opens with the FF icon next
to it
  3. Type pref: the icon changes to different app indicators (what app
indicator is shown varies), in particular the keyboard and network ones and
does not show any FF menu options

  Expected behaviour
  The HUD should favour menu options from the application that currently has
the focus and only show app indicator menu options as secondary items. In the
example above, the Firefox Edit Preferences menu item would have been the
obvious one to show considering FF had the focus.

  It looks like the HUD in its current state is only able to show search
  results from the focused application or one of the app indicators but
  not both at the same time. The result is that it jumps between focused
  app and app indicators making it very unpredictable. A more stable
  behaviour would be to show search results from both the focused
  application and all app indicators with an order that favours the
  focused application.

  --
  Note from design:

  This is an important bug, the display of indicator and desktop options
  needs to be very significantly retarded. They currently have much too
  high of a prominence.

  A feature that would improve Unity's usability would be to have the
  ability to close windows from within Spread Mode.

  For example, when the user presses Super+W and the shrunk windows
  appear, users should be able to middle-click a shrunk-window to close
  it. The shrunk-windows could also have an X in the corner so users
  can click the X to close the window.

  Often, I end up having several windows open that I no longer need
  open. I might have 4 Firefox windows, 5 G-Edit windows, 3 Libreoffice
  Impress windows, etc. I'd like to be able to enter Spread Mode and
  selectively eliminate the windows I no longer need open.

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: unity

  Left, right, and middle click trigger different events depending on
  whether you're using the workspace switcher, window spread view, or
  static application switcher. The UI for these share similarities
  (window previews, mouse and keyboard interfaces, zoom effect,
  typically invoked via keyboard shortcuts) but the mouse behaviour is
  different, leading to a confusing experience.

  Workspace switcher
  - left click selects (but does not zoom to) clicked workspace (behaviour A)
  - left click-and-drag drags clicked window between workspaces (behaviour B)
  - right click zooms to clicked workspace (behaviour C)
  - middle click does nothing (behaviour D)
  - mouse-scroll-up selects (but does not zoom to) next workspace
(behaviour E)
  - mouse-scroll-down selects (but does not zoom to) previous workspace,
UNLESS previous workspace is on a different y-level, in which case it does
nothing (behaviour F)

  Window spread view
  - left click zooms to clicked window (behaviour C)
  - left click-and-drag zooms to clicked window (behaviour C)
  - right click selects (but does not zoom to) clicked window (behaviour A)
  - middle click selects (but does not zoom to) clicked window (behaviour A)
  - mouse-scroll-up selects (but does not zoom to) hovered window (behaviour
A)
  - mouse-scroll-down selects (but does not zoom to) hovered window
(behaviour A)

  Static application switcher
  - left click zooms to clicked window (behaviour C)
  - left click-and-drag zooms to clicked window (behaviour C)
  - right click zooms to clicked window (behaviour C)
  - middle click zooms to clicked window (behaviour C)
  - mouse-scroll-up zooms to hovered window (behaviour C)
  - mouse-scroll-down zooms to hovered window (behaviour C)

  So, to recap: we have 3 modes for moving around the virtual desktop,
  with different click events exhibiting a total of 6 different
  behaviours, not one of which is consistent across all three modes. The
  behaviour signatures are as follows:

  Workspace switcher: ABCDEF
  Window spread view: CC
  Static application switcher: CC

  The responses of these plug-ins to the various click events should be
  re-evaluated and unified in order to provide a consistent and easily
  learnable user interface.

  The Sound control panel icon has a filled grey background. When using
  the keyboard to select an application in the lens, I can't tell if
  Sound is highlighted as the highlight is obscured by the background.

  Also the icon is low resolution.

  I note that control panels don't seem to get bumped up the MRU list.
  I use the Sound control panel much more than Sound Recorder, but if I
  search for 'Sound' the Sound Recorder is always first in the list.
  This is probably best.

  show that the title of the window remains System Settings regardless
  of which panel you are on.

  However, because of the change made in bug 801784, the window title
  changes to the name of the currently open panel.

  This is ugly in three ways:

  1. It means the title of the current panel is displayed twice,
  millimeters apart -- first in the window title, and then in the button
  just below it.

  2. It causes the launcher to flash distractingly as you navigate.
  (Should the Firefox launcher tile show the icon of the page you're
  visiting, instead of the Firefox logo? No, because that would be
  annoying. Same thing here.)

  3. Least importantly, clicking the All Settings button illogically
  changes things that are both above and below it. (Web browsers also
  have this problem, but they have nowhere else to compactly show the
  title. We do.)

  Ways this bug could be fixed:

  a. Make the window title always System Settings, and revert the
  launcher change. This would fix (1) (2) and (3).

  b. Make the window title always System Settings, leaving the
  launcher as it is. This would fix (1) and (3), but not (2), and would
  introduce a new minor problem: the launcher and the window wouldn't
  match.

  c. Use Back and Forward buttons instead of the breadcrumbs, and revert
  the launcher change. This would fix (1) (2) and (3). (I explained this
  further in https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=643322#c9.)

Bug description:
  NEW ITERATION:
  What is currently defective by design is the way unity is put on top of the
background windows. It's a simple colored layer placed above stuff, with some
nice blur to makes things more readable but it carries all the issues of
washing out the resultant color of the dash, making it less crisp and vibrant.

  A nice trick is to play with the underlying background windows (the
  damage area/pixmap taken from Compiz), blend them with colors, and
  place the resultant below the dash.

  The steps are these:
  1) Take the underlying pixmap
  2) Blend this pixmap with a tweaked average color using OVERLAY operator
  3) Blur the pixmap (as we currently do)
  4) Put this new obtained pixmap below the dash
  5) At this point, the dash could be just a solid dark layer even with a lower
opacity

  We might tweak the steps further, but the essential bits will remain
  the same because what will make the big difference is the blending
  described in step 2, that we are not doing now.

  ~~~
  ORIGINAL BUG (FIXED Cimi):
  The background of the BFB, Workspace Switcher, Lens, and Trash launcher icons
tiles need to use a higher saturation of the average background colour of the
wallpaper.
  Currently the colour is not as prominent as shown in the design,
  compare the attached image unity_desktop_24_06_11_02.png to the
  current implementation (when using the default wallpaper).   In the
  exact visual effect we are trying to achieve the colour takes on much
  more prominence.
  Desired resolution:
  - Increase the colour saturation in the BFB, Workspace Switcher, Lens, and
Trash launcher icons
Bug description:
  I've come to love the new main dash home screen. However, a problem
  with it is that when I search for an application and then launch that
  application, the search is remembered the next time I open the dash.
  This causes the information on the screen to be wrong in the sense
  that it doesn't display the most recent stuff, but the most recent
  stuff according to my old search. In order to see the most recent
  stuff, you then have to first clear the search field. But it's not
  that easy to notice, so it's easy to forget.
  The dash and all lenses should forget searches when closed.
  Replace spread mode with window previews
Bug description:
  Feature request:
  Replace the spread mode with window previews.
  The spread mode is:
  Annoying: because of the zoom-out and zoom-in animation.
  Intrusive: because the whole screen changes.
  Tedious and inefficient: Because it takes too much time to switch between
windows.
  Because switching between open windows of the same application is
  something you have to do often, it's very important that this works as
  efficient as possible.
  I propose the following solution:
  Instead of showing the spread mode, show all the open windows of the same
application as window previews near the application icon in the panel.
  (This only needs to work when two or more windows of an application
  are open)
  Imagine two or more windows previews horizontally of vertically
  aligned at the right side of the application icon.
  When you want to switch between two or more windows of the same
  application you simply go the the application icon and the window
  previews are shown. You than just select the window you want and off
  you go! Simple!
  Window previews are:
  Not annoying : because there are no animations.
  Not intrusive: the whole screen doesn't need to change.
  Efficient: Because the animation is not necessary: time is saved.
  I added some mock-ups: see comment 3, 4, 5 and 6.
  - All available apps (including apps available to purchase) should be
  displayed under the apps available to download category header.
  - Underneath the 'Source' filter header, the 'Software Centre' filter
  option should be removed and replaced with 'Open Source' and
  'Commercial' filter options.
Bug description:
  Currently if a user enters the alt-tab window spread by pausing, on
  reaching the end of the spread they return to the app switching list.
  However if a user enters the alt-tab window spread by pressing the
  down arrow key, on reaching the end of the spread they loop back to
  the beginning of the spread.
  In recent user testing, having these two different modes of navigation
  proved very confusing to a number of users.
  Desired solution:
  - Even if a window spread is entered by pressing the down arrow key,
  on reaching the end of the spread the user should move to the next
  application (the same behaviour as when a user enters a alt-tab window
  spread by pausing)
  When switching between two applications (say firefox a libreoffice
  writer) one of which has multiple windows, switching back does not
  necessarily choose the last active window.
  To replicate:
  1. Open a libreoffice writer document and write 1 on the page.
  2. Open another and write 2
  3. Open firefox
  4. Go to the writer document and make sure you are working on the document
with the 1 on the page.
  5. Click on the firefox launcher icon
  6. Click on the libreoffice writer icon
  What happens: The libreoffice writer document labeled 2 is opened
  What should happen: The libreoffice writer document labeled 1 is opened
  This becomes very annoying when trying to quickly switch between 2
  windows, as I have to double click the writer icon and open the
  correct window.
Bug description:
  When the Dash is open and there is a maximised app in the background,
  the top bar background should not disappear.
  To reproduce:
  1. Open any window and make it maximised.
  2. Open the Dash
  What you currently see that is incorrect:
  - The background of the top bar disappears showing the background wallpaper
in the position where the top bar was.
  What you should see:
  - The background of the top bar (just the dark bar without any emblems or app
title, effectively just the top bar texture) should remain in place, and you
should *NOT* be able to see the background wallpaper.  For clarity, this change
does not change the dash in any way, we are only changing the background
*behind* the dash.
  Desired solution:
  - *ONLY* in the case where there is a maximised window, the top bar
background should be displayed when the Dash is open.
  - When there is no maximised window the top bar background should not be
displayed (as currently happens)
  - The attached images ambiance_topbar.png and radiance_topbar.png show
*exactly* the effect we are trying to achieve
Bug description:
  Reduce the spread delay for all items other than the initial item the
  select lands on after alt-tab opens.  After the user moves the select
  off it's opening position, spread delay should be shortened.  This
  change is because a longer spread delay is only required for the
  initial item to allow the user time to scan the items in alt-tab
  without being disrupted.  The spread delay on all other item can be
  shorter, which should give a more responsive feel.
  --
  Note from User Testing:
  In user testing, participants did not find the spread because they
  moved between applications too quickly.  When I pointed out the spread
  to them, they commented that the delay was too long.  Power users said
  that it would be faster for them to find what they were looking for
  without the spread.
  The See  more... text in the dash on each section should have
  the same baseline as the section name to its left. At the moment, the
  See more... piece looks a few pixels too high.
  Desired solution:
  - Review the file_lens_17_08_11_02.png visual design that is
  attached to this bug.  This design  shows the expanded and collapsed
  states of both the Dash category headers and search filter sections,
  and also the exact desired positioning and alignment (basically the
  See more... text is baselined, and the expand/contract arrows are
  always centred relative to the directly proceeding text).
  - Adjust size/position of dash elements until they exactly match the
  design. This can be tested by overlaying the attached design with some
  opacity on top of a screenshot of the dash in GIMP.
[Desktop-packages] [Bug 922979] Re: Keyboard Shortcuts overview isn't displayed on 1024x600 resolution or lower
2012-04-16 Thread John Lea
Marking invalid as the overlay is not interactive and there are
currently no plans to design a smaller version just for netbook screens.
However patches can be submitted to the design team (which would need
design signoff before it could land).
  I think it should because of my screen resolution : 1024*600
Bug description:
  I was using dodge windows in unity mainly because it make the launcher
  go out of the way on maximized apps (like Kdenlive who is benefiting a
  lot from unity's capability of making the most space usable).
  But I was never hiding the launcher when I use windowed apps (like
  firefox on the left and openoffice on the righ part of the screen)
  because it helped me a lot switching with something else rapidly (like
  thunderbird, pidgin, etc)
  What I think to be a good third behavior of the launcher is to hide
  itself when one app or more are fullscreen and if they are not, being
  always there.
  There is some corner cases like if one app is full screen and the
  focused app is not. But I think this will not bring some crazy bugs
  like dodging windows did in the past.
