[slim] mobile version of Squeezenetwork

2008-11-17 Thread mortslim

With all the recent talk about iPhone apps, I have a humble suggestion:

For those of us who:

a. Have an iPhone/iPod Touch; and,
b. Don't use SqueezeCenter; and,
c. Just use Squeezenetwork; and,
d. Find that the Squeezenetwork webpage is awkward to use on the
iPhone/iPod Touch;

Now, therefore,

How about Logitech making a mobile version of their squeezenetwork
webpage that works better on the iPhone/iPod Touch?

Apparently the current Squeezenetwork webpage is heavily graphics based
and isn't so easy to navigate on the apple devices.

In fact, of all the webpages on the internet, I find the squeezenetwork
webpage to be one of the most difficult to work with on the apple
devices.

If there was a mobile version of the squeezenetwork webpage, I bet it
help to sell a lot more squeezeboxes and booms!!!

So please logitech, publish a mobile version of the squeezenetwork.

Thanks

Flac files use up a lot more network bandwidth that MP3, sometimes ten
times as much, which can stretch marginal networking.

Have you looked through the wiki on networks. You should and some of the

Contact support.Support is really good. try them.

I assume that the vista PC is wired to ? so you have an all wired
support ? if not wire the pc too.
Is the music on the vista PC too ?

The usual culprits are Firewall and/or AV software

Search this forum for which ports to open i FW i think 9000 and 3483
would do.
There are some more ports which normally is not needed.

A search for which files to ignore in AV and Firewalls reveals this:
Also set your FW and antivirus to ignore *.myi and *.myd files.

I'm not a vista user. my latest win PC had XP which was infected with
Norton (avoid like the black death). So I know nothing on vista righths
user's and such problems ?

How is your network setup what ip adresses DHCP and all, you could walk
trogh that with the suport too.

[slim] 5.1 not working anymore

2008-11-17 Thread kzuiderveld

Hi,

I successfully ripped and played about 30 DTS and Dolby 5.1 tracks a
few months ago. Worked flawless.

Alas, after an upgrade to the latest SqueezeCenter (7.2.1 - 23630
ReadyNAS) and the Squeezebox V3(firmware 113), my files are not
recognized as 5.1 anymore; my receiver plays them in stereo mode, which
of course gives only noise.

I checked the settings on the server and SB; the files are in "native"
mode and volume control on SB is disabled.

does anyone have suggestions what caused the setup to stop working -
and even better, ideas for a fix?

Thx, Karel

Re: [slim] Squidgy for iPhone now available in Apple App Store

2008-11-17 Thread mortslim

If its a Squeezenetwork limitation that doesn't allow an iphone app to
work without aid of squeezecenter on a computer, then I humbly suggest
that logitech fix this.

Many webpages work fine with the iphone. Unfortunately, the
squeezenetwork is very difficult to work with on the iphone. Maybe it
is less text based than graphically based.

Suggestion: Several webpages now have both a regular version and a
mobile version. Maybe logitech can publish a mobile version of the
squeezenetwork.

[slim] RadioIO soundpass on Squeezecenter?

2008-11-17 Thread joeriz

I recently signed up for a soundpass with RadioIO and have entered my
account info in Squeezenetwork (SN). I can use the soundpass just fine
when logged into SN. However, I am not getting the commercial-free
stream when using Squeezecenter (SC).

Has anyone else had this problem recently? The only thing I can think
might be wrong is that my RadioIO account name (joeriz) does not match
my SN account (my e-mail address). If it is a requirement that they
match, it wasn't made clear. According to the 'help' screen at RadioIO
I can not change my account name. And, as far as I can tell, on SN it
has to be my e-mail address.

I suppose SC does not have the ability to grab my RadioIO account name
from SN...?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Joe

Sorry, it just goes into standby mode. A push of the Transporter's
"Power" button wakes it up again. I have it set to go into standby
after 30 minutes of inactivity.

This problem only appears in the first 4 minutes of an album. If it
can get by that, which it usually does, then it will continue without
incident to the end of the album.

Could be a bad computer part I guess, but I doubt it. How would I
test?

Which Terrastation do you have?

There is already a large community of SC users running on Buffalo,
Synology and Qnap NAS boxes. Have a search for SSODS (SlimServer On
DiskStation - SlimServer being the former name from SqueezeCenter) on
these forums and the internet as a whole, there is a lot of information
on this out there.

Your computer -shuts down- when this happens? Yes, that would cause
Transporter to lose its connection with the computer!

How does it shut down? Does it crash, reboot, turn off, etc? It's
possible you have a hardware defect in your computer, bad hard disk or
RAM for example.

It does not look like that at all.

Under Help About Kmix it says Ver 3.0 using KDE 4.1.2.

After some experimenting using headphones I found out if I set the
system vol to 100% and adjust the volume in Amarok to the same level as
the CD sound. Distortion disappeared but the sound is still kind of
flat, lifeless. But I guess that's depends on the hardware and cable
and not the software.

And I'll do clean install some day.

No. SC already supports UPnP servers (but not really that well) but it
is disabled by default as it's not very useful. SC's UPnP support will
get better as a result of this (it will be mostly the same code) but
most people won't need to use it.

Why? SC is way better at organizing and handling your music than
Twonky is, so the only reason to run Twonky if you also run SC is to
serve other devices on your network. There is another enhancement to
make SC a proper UPnP *server* for those kinds of devices. Personally
I'd like to do it but I'm in the minority on that one. I don't see it
happening any time soon if at all.

I think if you actually bothered to properly read you would realise
that you have just actually just taken me completely out of context.
Even a 4" screen, twice the size of SBc would be 'small'. How big is
big then in the context of this device? Do you want a 15" monitor
bolted onto it?

And even if i had meant exactly that, it did not justify "1. What part
of 'big screen' didn't you understand?". That was a pretty strange
reaction from you, but judging from of threads, not uncommon.

Re: [slim] Why do I need the SqueezeCenter server to play my MP3 files?

2008-11-17 Thread scrubby

Ah, OK, I think I am getting it. Am I correct in guessing, then, that I
am still going to need SqueezeCenter running somewhere? And is it
correct to guess that Squeezcenter is the service that will - pending
development - be able to recognize Twonky and incorporate those files
into the library as a upnp resource?

So what I really want to do, then, is figure out how to get
SqueezeCenter running on my Terastation, and all that running alongside
Twonky! That'd be the ticket I am guessing!!

Many thanks for your time, andyg!!

Re: [slim] Future of SB3 ?

2008-11-17 Thread Pale Blue Ego

If you're going to have a "big screen" display for the SB4, then it
might as well be a video streamer as well. That would seem to be a
different product than a future SB3 (SB4).

If we're keeping the discussion strictly to improvements to the SB3
music streamer, maybe ideas involving video outputs and touch screens
should migrate to a new thread about a video Squeezebox.

To get back to the potential SB3 replacement, I would favor either an
incremental improvement of the existing form factor, or a full-width
component with a wider VFD. In either case (pun intended) I would want
a horsepower boost in terms of CPU, on board memory, buffer, and DAC
sound quality.

Re: [slim] Why do I need the SqueezeCenter server to play my MP3 files?

2008-11-17 Thread andyg

Yes, but don't think of it like the Boom has UPnP support. It only
supports the bare minimum needed to proxy the necessary packets back to
a server (SN) and SN handles the interface and control functions as
usual by integrating the UPnP server into the Music Library menu as a
new option. When playing music the files are streamed from the UPnP
server to the Boom, no data from the audio files goes to SN.

[slim] PlayStation 3 browser and the SC Web UI

Jumping up a usage level, what I'm also really looking for is something

Re: [slim] Unusual request? filter my music for lossless format?

2008-11-17 Thread DaveWr

Further to my last post - I used to use a single library for the family
iPod collection plus Squeezecenter. I used the scan for only checked
music in iTunes feature of Squeezecenter.

In iTunes you can sort by Size to get the AAC compressed files. Select
these and copy to a playlist Compressed. Then go into the playlist and
deselect all the tick marks (I think its column 1) by control + click
on an entry or shift + click. This clears of adds all check marks
(sorry on business overseas so cannot check currently).

This will deselect all you iPod music, then Squeezecenter will only use
the checked items. This is a little tedious long term, two libraries is
slightly more time, but if you use / change iPod music frequently
easier, keeping everything correct without full Squeezecenter rescans
is a little tricky.

Dave

Re: [slim] Sound Quality Linux vs Windows

2008-11-17 Thread agillis

Sounds cards in PCs have poor analog output for the reasons stated in
this thred. There is a lot of electrical noise in a computer. If you
are getting pops and clicks you can make sure your sound card is on
it's own interupt. Use "lspci" from the command line in linux. But I
don't think this is your problem.

Your best bet though is to use the SDIF out on your PC and connect that
to your stereo. That way the A/D is done by the stereo not the PC. If
your PC sound card doesn't have SDIF or digital out you can get sound
sound cards or USB sound systems that do for under $25.

Re: [slim] Unusual request? filter my music for lossless format?

2008-11-17 Thread DaveWr

Hi

I do exactly what you want. On a mac you start iTunes whilst holding
down the Option Key (Next to the Apple Key). This will open a dialogue
box select library. I have two libraries, Lossless and iPOD. When I
rip with iTunes or XLD (which is a bit like EAC for Macs) - I put the
lossless file into the lossless library. I then select the new files
in a playlist called Export. In iTunes you can export this playlist,
remember to select xml format as the save option. Close iTunes -
reopen with the Option Key again selecting the iPod library. Check
iPod library has import options set to your required AAC selection
type, ensure 'copy music to library' is set, and 'organise library' is
set. Then go to library and Import Playlist. This will complete the
import of your files into iPod library.

If you are doing this regularly, then it is easier to use Doug's
scripts or build you own script.

I hope this helps. I only do this on a batch basis every month - if I
have added music.

I hope that helps.

Regards

Dave

Let's put this into context:

Re: [slim] Squidgy for iPhone now available in Apple App Store

2008-11-17 Thread Enoch Soames

I had a similar problem (with a library of 2200 albums or so) - Squidgy
got through the 'albums' scan, but it would crash back to the home
screen halfway through 'artists.' It finally occurred to me to reboot
my iPhone (hold down the top button and bottom button simultaneously
until the slider appears at the top of the screen, then restart). That
did the trick - it scans everything now. I've encountered a similar
problem with other apps, particularly games, so it may be an iPhone
problem rather than a Squidgy problem. It's worth a try, anyway.

Apart from those missing favorites and a few other issues, I'm very
impressed with Squidgy, by the way. It really shines where playlist
creation is concerned - I love being able to reorder songs quickly.
Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a way to _save_ new playlists,
or access old ones. That's pretty important.

Hey andyg, I am trying not to be so confused and have just the simplest
of questions regarding the possible support for upnp. Is that support
from the point of view of the player? So, to put a finer point on it,
would I be able to play my files (hosted on a Terastion/PowerPC set up
with Twonky upnp service) using a Squeezebox Boom? Does this mean the
SqueezeBoom would have upnp support? I am really hoping this is the
case as upnp is serving up other devices in the home and I would like
to capitalize on that.

Apparently we weren't looking at the same thread because the one I

Unfortunately, now I can't find the one I originally wrote that about.

I don't disagree, but what should be and what is, are two different
things. Poor email support is not uncommon & probably has numerous
reasons - from being inundated with spam, to incoherent questions from
people with no writing skills.

I pretty much expect poor email support and consider it a treat when I
get a fast and detailed response. Phone support seems much more
productive most of the time, especially once you get past the 1st tier
script readers.

Re: [slim] Unusual request? filter my music for lossless format?

2008-11-17 Thread moley6knipe

> how do i access other library on a MAC if i do NOT add applescript?

Don't know, sorry. Would imagine there is a way - p'raps try holding
down the apple key when you open iTunes - must be able to find this by
Googling, I'd think?

> Also-- since the music is already ripped to this one file, both
versions (ALAC and AAC) are in the same folder. And, I dont know how to
sort these out using MAC OSC. It is easy in iTunes to sort on "kind" but
then how is it possible to move files to another folder from within
iTunes?

Well you could sort by kind in itunes and note down the file/folder
locations, but that would be a colossal pain. If you were using
Windows a really god tagging application like www.mp3tag.de/en would do
it programatically; perhaps you could look for an app for the Mac that
would do likewise? you'd need something that would let you sort and
move your files by "Codec" or "bit rate" or similar.

Manually, you could sort each folder by size - that (should) list all
the aac and all the alac stuff in two clumps per folder, I would
think?

Sorry, not a Mac expert by any means. try posting about this problem
in the ripping / transcoding etc forum - you might get more exposure
there.

2008-11-17 Thread MeSue

Squeezecenter has an option to browse by music folder if you want to see
it just like in explorer. This is slower, though, since it has to read
the directory structure as it goes.

For your Rolling Stones problem, it probably has to do with the way the
music is tagged. SqueezeCenter's library browsing does very well, but
you have to be rather meticulous about tagging your music. Check out
the tagging info in the wiki or in the tagging section of this forum

Can you treat it as a compilation album ? I know there is a setting
that I use for any compilation albums that groups them under 'Various
Artists' rather then having all the individual artists clogging up my
list of artists. I guess the only limitation would be that it would
come under 'Various Artists' as opposed to 'Rolling Stone's.

The other option would be to look at the tags again, there must be
something in the album tag which is setting those to the individual
album rather then a greatest hits one.

Re: [slim] Distortion during loud tracks - my amp is too sensitive - what to do?

2008-11-17 Thread Mnyb

Clive is probably right, no one knows where or when it clips.

But any how, now my amateurish calculations SBR has an output speced as
4.8Vpp
which is circa 1.7Vrms the Marantz wants 0.185Vrms (I assume rms ).

Via the calculator i found on the web i get this:
1,7 volt is 6.83dBu or 4.61dBV
0,185 volt is -12.44dBu or -14.66dBV

In any case the needed damping is 19.27dB say 20dB

Please correct me if i'm wrong it was way back i calculated such
thing's

So 20dB damping in preamp volume control will do the trick.

Now the excell spread sheet for calculating damping resistors is gone ?
any one got a copy ? well a part of the jobb is done.

Internal sound cards can be pretty bad. They also tend to produce a lot
of interference from the motherboard. External sound cards (or external
DACs) can be much better, but one might as well get an SB for the money

Re: [slim] What REALLY happens end-to-end with Apple Lossless files?

2008-11-17 Thread Mnyb

I have tried the DTS and dolby digital test, my HT processor gets it
ergo my chain is lossles, no bits are missing.

It's a little fuzzy to encode an 5.1 stream as wav and then to FLAC ,
but it can be done. I took it one step further and burned such a track
on a CD and ripped it to ensure that no unknowns had creeped in
anywhere in my signal chain

The result here is if you use rg or volume= white noise.

So it's an all or nothing test and it really play back as an 5.1 sound

Thats why i'm not using any replay gain or volume control , or any
processing plugin or pre processing on the files them self, I want to
serv bit perfect rip's of whats on the CD to my HT processor (who has
an abundance of processing , thats another topic )

dcote;360692 Wrote:

No flames here but an easy way to prove that at least the FLAC decoding
is lossless - it requires an HDCD-encoded track and an HDCD decoder
connected digitally to an SB.

If you play back an HDCD-encoded track in FLAC to an HDCD decoder
connected digitally, you will get the HDCD indicator to light up. You
need to have digital volume at 100% and no ReplayGain.

If this process was lossy at any point in the chain, this couldn't
happen. Turn RG on or adjust the digital volume and the HDCD indicator
goes away.

I believe you can also do this with Dolby Digital and DTS-encoded
files, but you have to do some special things to the WAV file in order
to get the SB to relay it to the outboard decoder. Still, a single bit
error will screw this up and it doesn't.

Yes, it's been done a number of times. I think there were some posts
about tests like this in the Audiophile forum (thar be dragons!)
recently. I think at this point everyone can rest assured that when
using a lossless format with no bitrate limiting, volume control or
replay gain the SB is bitperfect. If there's server-side transcoding
involved then of course there's the possibility of an error at that
stage, but it's trivial to test the binary in question (e.g. flac, sox,
whatever).

Just a guess, but it may be down to the Ubuntu soundcard driver.

Ubuntu may be using a 'generic' soundcard driver that may not be
specifically written for your soundcard.

You don't say what soundcard you have ... perhaps the manufacturer's
web site may have a manufacturer written linux driver for it.

As I say, just a guess.

Sorry, I missed that! Re-reading your post, I see you never mention
SC, you're comparing computer -> stereo vs. CD player -> stereo.

Incidentally, this is why I gave up on computer audio. No matter what
I did, it was always just...blah. I suspect if I spent mega $$$ on a
soundcard (M-Audio Delta or similar) the results would have been
better, but the SB was roughly equivalent in cost and a lot more
flexible.

Re: [slim] Sound Quality Linux vs Windows

2008-11-17 Thread Mark Lanctot

It really should be mentioned here that SqueezeCenter doesn't care what
OS you're running, the sound quality should not be affected (up to the
point it drops out completely due to insufficient bandwidth). After
all, you don't even need a soundcard to run SC. SC does not use any
sound software or hardware.

Playing back through the computer using the kernel mixer is a different
matter.

Re: [slim] Sound Quality Linux vs Windows

2008-11-17 Thread bpa

Generally the PC speaker sound output has gone through a mixer which can
combine various sources (e.g. wave, CD , mic, line-in ) into one
output. Many of these sources are enabled by default so a lot of audio
processing (e.g. upsampling , mixing, downsampling, enhanced stereo)
will be performed on the audio before output. By contrast with SC,
audio from files are passed unaltered to the SB.

In Linux look for mixer control (e.g. Kmix in KDE I think or amixer on
shell) to adjust volume amongst other things.

Re: [slim] Freezing, slow response - how I resolved it

2008-11-17 Thread technograndad

Interesting.

I have two SB3s, one in the lounge and one in my bedroom, and one of
them reboots itself on a quite regular basis, after 5 minutes or so,
longer sometimes.

I swapped them over, thinking it was a problem with the wi-fi but it's
just the same when wired. I swapped the power supplies but the problem
remained with the same unit. I'm thinking perhaps a component might be
failing? It seems to reboot itself after a few minutes with loud/busy
music and lasts for several tracks sometimes with quieter music. Could
something be getting overloaded?

Your post pointing the finger at the server operating system is
interesting and now I'm wondering if I can revive this wonky player.

I've tried going back to v6.5 but it still fails, I'm currently on an
overnight build of v7.2.1 from a couple of weeks ago, firmware 113. I'm
running Windows XP, with recently applied SP3 although it was failing on
SP2 for a while before that.

Doe anyone know if there are any debug settings I can turn on which
might indicate what's actually happening at the player? Or any
plug-ins? I sometimes see a crazed display just before it reboots.
Mostly it carries on with the track it was playing, other times it
stays quiet in the "stopped" position.

Any clues, tips or advice would be most welcome

John

Yes I have found a difference, I dual boot into Ubuntu & XP - the root
cause of my difference's was related to the wireless card through. The
wireless card was performing poorly on Linux and that was impacting
sound quality, this has been improved significantly on the move to 8.10
so doubt whether that is your problem.

I haven't since the 8.10 checked the sound quality between the 2, I
guess this is a hard thing to measure as with the wireless issues
resolved then it would be related to my own interpretation

Re: [slim] Unusual request? filter my music for lossless format?

2008-11-17 Thread moley6knipe

The .m4a extension is indeed the same for AAC and Apple Lossless files,
as both audio formats are "wrapped" in an MPEG-4 container. I, too,
have no idea what that means ;-)

What are you running iTunes / SC on; Mac or PC?

Either way, it's possible to use iTunes to manage two or more
libraries. On a PC, when you double-click to run iTunes, hold down
your shift key. That'll get you a dialogue box, and from there you can
create a new iTunes library, complete with its own folder structure.

Then use one of these libraries for your iPod stuff, and another for
your SC stuff. Tell SC the loaction of the iTunes .lib file that
manages your Lossless stuff and you're good, everything's filtered.

I find that having to remember which stuff to add to which iTunes lib
is a pain if I decide to blow the libraries away and start again, so
i'd recommend that you think about moving SC stuff into its own folder
structure, and your iPod stuff into another.

eg here's mine...

M:\Music\iPod\ contains my iPod only iTunes library files, and
M:\Music\iPod\iTunes Music contains all my mp3 and aac stuff

M:\Music\SqueezeCenter\ contains my SqueezeCenter only iTunes library
files, and M:\Music\iPod\iTunes Music contains all my Apple Lossless
stuff

..if you're running on a Mac, Google Doug's applescripts - there's a
nice one that lets you switch libs from within iTunes itself.

EDIT: ah, you're on a mac. Even easier for you, no holding down Shift
or whatever that's called on a Mac ;-)

So favorites don't work on it? I was about to download it but that's a
deal breaker for me right now as that's the only way to access XM
stations. I guess I'll wait a bit for an update or Pippens to come
out. I plan on buying Pippens regardless but thought I'd try this one
in the mean time.

[slim] Sound Quality Linux vs Windows

2008-11-17 Thread bernt

Hi!

I have this stereo connected to my computer with Kubuntu 8.10.
http://www.amazon.com/JVC-FS-Y1-Component-System-Player/dp/B0007XH72Y

The other day I burned a music cd from flac files and put it in the
stereo to test it. And wow! What a sound compared to play the same
music with Amarok.

The sound from the computer was distorted and flat compared to the cd.

If I installed windows, could I get better sound or is it the
soundcard, cables or..?

Has anyone else noticed a difference in sound quality between Windows
and Linux on the same hardware?

Kind Regards
/Bernt

Re: [slim] Distortion during loud tracks - my amp is too sensitive - what to do?

An attenuator possibly makes sense in order to free up a decent amount
of preamp volume control range, BUT...

The point I was originally trying to make is that even an amp with an
"old-fashioned" input sensitivity around the 150mV mark should not be
overloaded by the 2V signal that typically comes out of a CD player.

rh2600 needs to perform a very simple experiment:

1. Set the Squeezebox volume to maximum (100), play a loud piece of
music, and turn the Marantz's volume control up so you can hear the
distortion.

2. Now turn the Marantz's volume control down. If the distortion
disappears, it was either due to clipping in the Marantz's power amp
section (nothing you can do - you need a more powerful amp), or it
might even be due to overloading of the speakers (you need speakers
with higher power handling).

On the other hand if the distortion remains even at low listening
levels, it's due to overload of the Marantz's input ciruitry. Try
turning the Squeezebox's volume down - the distortion should go away.
In this case, attenuators will fix the problem.

Re: [slim] Poll: Which DAC do you prefer SBR or SB3?

2008-11-17 Thread autopilot

A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the
results, please visit http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=55106

Question: Which DAC do you prefer?

- SBR's Wolfson's WM8501
- SB3's Burr-Brown PCM1748E

There was quite a lot of discussion about this at one stage, so when i
first received my beta SBr, i hooked it up to the same medium end AMP
as my SB3 and did about half a day's worth of A-B testing. TBH, while
there are slight differences in characteristics, they are so similar
overall i can't say i prefer either really. I would like to have voted
"No preference" If held at gun point, i would probably blurt out "SBr".
I say this because it found it to be a touch brighter, and i like the
sound. The SB3 was a bit warmer, and i think most people will prefer
it. I guess its also down to the music you like. I'm also quite
prepared to accept my ears/brain where biased because i'm so use to the
SB3's sound.

Since when has any MP3 codec been assumed to be "near perfect"? MP3 is
lossy so is inherently no where near prefect.

Anyway, if the decoding of a lossless stream wasn't perfect you would
get audio errors, not "playback [that] is rather shrill" as the OP was
speaking about.

[slim] Choppy Flac playback with SBClassic and Duet

2008-11-17 Thread Jontte

I had problems with my Squeezebox Duet since the day one. Flac files
started to play but after few seconds the started to get choppy and
totally unlistenable. MP3's and internet radio worked fine. I tried
wireless and ethernet connection and they both had the same problem.

After weeks of wondering I decided to connect my PC to router via
another network adapter and there was the solution... don't know why
though, but who cares, I was happy. :)

I then decided to buy Squeezebox Classic for my bedroom. I connected it
and now it had the same problem than my Duet used to have. I tried
wireless and wired connection but it didn't have any affect. I ran
network test and it showed that after 320 kbs the performance starts
getting weaker. But my livingrooms Duets performance was rock solid.

Last week I reinstalled my Windows(Vista 64bit)and hoped this could
help... but now my SB Classic works fine and performance is 100% and
Duet stutters with Flacs. Both players are connected to router via
ethernet cable, so there isn't any wireless network issues. I'm getting
really frustrated. Any ideas?

Re: [slim] FLAC format for videos?

2008-11-17 Thread dcote

i have been doing this for over 5 years now with my KISS/Linksys
networked DVD player (it is an ancient DP500). it plays VOB just fine,
which allows you to simply rip the DVD "as is" to your NAS. the VOB
file simply shows up in the file menu and i press play.

however, i have decided to compress DVDs, because even a NAS will run
out space sometime! ;-)

i encode all my movies myself, using the XviD codec and 160kbit MP3.
but, as you said, i dont care about AC3/DTS, since i dont have a
surround system. but as is, the quality is excellent and almost
indistinguishable from the original DVD.

Re: [slim] What REALLY happens end-to-end with Apple Lossless files?

2008-11-17 Thread dcote

at the risk of getting severely flamed here... ;-)

has anyone actually tried to take the dig. output from SB3, receiver et
al. and compared that to the original CD?

reason i ask is that there ARE known issues with at least one of the
codecs in the SB3:
http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=6231

i understand that that bug applies to the MP3 codec, but it was assumed
(!) to be near perfect, which it was not.

is there not a minute possibility that other codecs (internal and
external) may be suffering similar symptoms?

dont get me wrong, i agree that the most likely cause of AndrewFG's
symptoms is iTunes' ripping process itself and/or a healthy dose of
placebo. but no-one wanted to believe the MP3 codec bug at first,
either... ;-)

Re: [slim] Artwork Display

2008-11-17 Thread booguss

Hmm, i replaced the 7.3 JS's with 7.2.1 again. I guess I'll wait until
SC 7.3 is released officially.

Another issue for me is the artwork size; I have noticed that optimal
size of the artwork is around 600*600 so that it sits nicely on the
screen toghether with the Track name etc.

However, I do have some really big artwork at aroud 1400*1400 (and even
bigger), and I also have some small artwork at 300*300 (and smaller).
Problem is that the artwork does not seem to resize in "Nowplaying". If
I load a song from an album with a folder.jpg at 1400*1400 it occupies
the entire screen as if it was a wallpaper :-)

Similarly, if I load a song from an album with a folder.jpg at 300*300
it's way too small too small for the nowplaying screen purpose...

I haven't tested if it's a differance here, between tag embedded
artwork vs folder.jpg artwork.

Cheers!
/boo

I've noticed something like that when playing on an external MP3
streaming player.
I wonder if it is related to the metadata being sent with the stream?
Perhaps something about the format of it is causing some players to
misinterpret it.

Is there any easy way to turn it (metadata) off as an experiment?
