2023-03-29 Thread Radivoj Kar, F6GNZ via DX4WIN
Hi John,Nice reeding your post this early morning. And I agree 100% with you.
Using dx4win from it's 1st release and despite some small issues I also still
stick to this logger, fast and easy to use, except during big contests, where
WinTest beats it and all others. After move to our ex-summer home and our staff
being in a container for over 6 months during preparation for permanent full
year living, my shack is still not completely QRV for making QSOs. But, I
expect to have more time to get it ready in a near future, so we may establish
a schedule.Last saturday was my 85th anniversary an we were waiting for the
whole familly to come, but unfortunately only Sasha with his familly managed to
come, Vladimir's flight was cancelled because of social movements in
France...Hoping that everything is fine with you and your familly, Mira and
myself send our 88 and 73 to you and your's, hoping to see you here one
day.Cheers,Radi

believe most DX4Win users who also operate FT8 would like full
integration.  Most likely that would require adding UDP communication and
Paul says that is not likely to happen, at least not anytime soon.

Fortunately, it is not difficult to add FT8 QSOs to DX4Win.  I create a
shortcut to the WSJT-X (or JTDX) .adi file.  I import that file and it
imports very quickly.  Not ideal, but very easy.

If you need a logging program with real time uploads to Club Log, LOTW, full
integration with other software and other fun things, DX Labs software may
be your choice.  But the learning curve is steep and the number of settings
and options is significant.  DX4Win is very straight forward and so easy to
use.  I want to focus on making QSOs, not spending tons of time on the
logging program.

Just my 2 cents

Subject: [Dx4win] any upgrades?

I am just sorta on the fence here now since I finally have made the jump to
FT8 and just wondering if DX4WIN is going to be upgraded to handle WSJT-X
like it does with MMTTY. I have been using DX4WIN for many years and now
have 160K+ q's in the log. There are several minor changes I would like to
see but integration of WSJT-X is one that I would like to see. So while I
have been looking at all the windows logging programs now available I don't
really want to move away from DX4WIN if something is in the pipeline. If
nothing coming then I guess I'll be looking at other options. Thanks for

A friend called me for help with dx4win but I'm baffled. He's a long

time user of DX4Win but hasn't been on the reflector before (he's

signing up right now - W2KKZ Bob) but is hung up trying to log the contact.

He has his log open and is trying to add a new QSO. He hits F9 and the

log box clears. He can enter all the QSO info and when he his "Enter"

the log box clears - but the qso doesn't show in the log.

When I repeat his steps on my computer everything works OK. I ASSUME

(?) something must be set wrong on his computer. Anyone have any

suggestions as to what to look for?

How do I unlock the DX4WIN window positions so that I can see them on the

Hi Jim,I think that is would now be best if you just add message to dx4win
reflector with a link to your site where the ic7300 rig file is ready for
download, becaise it is the same one I copied from dx4win 8.05 rig files. It
works perfectly both for the ci-v remote connector, as well as for the usb ci-v
, providing care is taken to have 19200 set in the radio, in dx4win and mHam
keyer, if used. An for usb ci-v have 57600 set in Windows Device Manager for
radio usb com port and in dx4win radio preferences.

[Dx4win] Re :Re: Importing different FT8 logs

2021-04-05 Thread Radivoj Kar, F6GNZ via DX4WIN
Hi David, Lee and Paul,Thank you for comming back so fast to help me solve my
problem. In the meantime I found that I had created another one, this time
within the wsjtx log itself. By inadvertance, I have logged two QSY date groups
directly into the Home QSO log, by  opening the Home wsjtx instance instead of
the QSY one. That's the main reason of having those QSY conracts imported into
the Home Group 1.
Now, I will try to follow your advises in order to correct the DX4WIN
problem. Then, I would have to do it separtely in wsjtx log in order to merge
two QSY date groups into the main wsjtx log.
I will keep you informed on how my efforts went in order to have a clean DX4WIN
log group allocation.
So, thanks again for your help. It's tome to go to horizontal polarisation :) ..

BUT: I have created different WSJTX instances with different FT8 logs, each one
related to my different QRA locator. They are  stored in different folders, so
when importing them, I'd like that each of them gets logged in DX4WIN under the
related Group name used for this location.
When importing Home FT8 QSOs log, I selected Group 1 and the log contacts now
appear in my Home Group1 window. Then, before importing the  FT8 log made on one

1. Am I missing something during the import procedure? How to get them
allocated to the Group2 during Import?
2. Once they were imported and appear in the Goup1, how to move them to a group

I have sent this question to the Reflector, but it was rejected because I
enclosed some screen shots that number of bytes exceeded the number allowed by

Start Windows Device Manager and display COM Ports.Insert  the cable plug
into IC7300 CI-V jack (REMOTE) and the USB plug  to PC USB port. In device
manager see the comport number of the new created comport. I port  Properties
set baud rate to 57600 (same as IC7300 default in DX4WIN/Radio tab).  Set Radio
COM Port in DX4WIN to same Port number of new detected Port in Device Manager
(or you can change Port numbers to different numbers in Com Port Properties and
in DX4WIN Radio Tab to be the same in both).
If these Port numbers are different from one used in WSJT-x or other programs
using the radio USB COM3 port, there will be no conflict.
If you use win4icom application, it is also best to keep DX4WIN set to the CI-V
port and out of the ic4win program which controls the radio on its COM3 USB
port and connect other applications on win4icom Aux ports.
Hope this helps.

This will avoid comport conflicts. You can find ci-V adapter on Internet or

Hi Mike,

Thank you very much for the prompt response, which is much appreciated.
I should probably have mentioned that I tried to use the import/export tool
as you suggest, without success:
I'm only given the ability to merge DX4Win logs (perhaps this functionality
is limited in the demo version?), not to import the files. I tried merging
the files using all possible versions and keep getting the same
inconsistencies. (I think there might be an issue with the mode of operation
as well, as I certainly don't recall doing that much RTTY...).

Very grateful for any additional thoughts from you and the broader

Hi all,

I have identified in my computer backup log files from 20 years ago(!) when,
being a teenager with a modest station, I often operated from friends’ QTHs.
Some of these logs have been created with DX4Win.

I have tried to open the logs in .dxl format with the current demo version
of DX4Win, but I’m under the strong impression that the data has either been
corrupted or that there's a version conflict. Indeed, those logs have a lot
of activity recorded on 12m, which is not a band that I recall using. (As a
matter of fact, I can’t even remember if my novice licence entitled me to
operate on 12m then). I have, however, a vivid recollection of operating
often on 10m, which is most likely where I made those QSOs.  Also, I am
tempted to rule out human error at the time of logging as there are three
files presenting the same issue.  Has any of you faced a similar issue in
the past and, if so, how have you resolved it?

Thank you in advance for any help!

[Dx4win] Re :RE: CW Skimmer with DX4WIN ??

2020-04-19 Thread Radivoj Kar, F6GNZ via DX4WIN
Hello Guy and Ricardo, Yes, in my first configuration I was also using the
Microham 2 with Router and had interfaced Dx4win over CAT1 and CWS over CAT2
using different com ports for each, and it worked. Later, when I added the G11
SDR controlled by the GSDR (PowerSDR console derivative), I used the DDUtil
utility and virtual ports to interface dx4win and CWS with SDR used as RX-only
and set DDUtil to use FT1000MP as slave radio for TX-only, synchronised with
SDR/CWS frequency. But now, after purchasing the IC7610 for my home station,
having it controlled by ic4win application, I wanted to re-use my FT1000MP in
my summer QRA south of France, without any additional hardware and control it
just by DX4WIN and CWS applications. This was the main reason of asking a
question. I have sold my Microkeyer 2 and replaced it with the MK3 connected to
the new IC7610 Rig, and do not want to make extra expenses for additional h/w
for my summer installation. If Paul wanted to add OmniRig to dx4win, all would
have been much easier..Now it seems I'l have to forget using CWS or use OmniRig
compatible logger for this site..

This has been working for decades here without any problems.
BUT
You need to have a interface from microKEYER like DXP-MKII-MKIII- MK2R+, USBII
etc
In the Device router software you can set for example com1 to your radio (CAT).
and also com2 to your rig (2nd CAT).
In dx4win you can select com1 or com2 for your rig and in CW Skimmer also
But they should not be equal in both programs,
DX4WIN = com1, CWskimmer = com2
Or
DX4WIN = com2, CWskimmer = com1
Ft1000mp I had long time ago and can confirm that it worked this way also.

Btw over the years I tried out many different software serial splitters, serial
bridges etc
But didn't found any that was 100% fool prove working.

Hi, Has anybody ever been successful on controlling the FT1000MP or other rig

Both applications can not share the same Rig comport.
If DX4WIN could support OmniRig, it would be easy. LP PAN 1/2 doesn't support
FT1000MP, so had anybody found a solution?

Re: [Dx4win] Re : New Computer

2016-03-12 Thread Alan Zack
Yes, I actually have a copy of my DX4WIN folder on an USB thumb drive. I can
plug it into a laptop and have a record of all my QSO's with me when I
travel. I just move a copy the latest k7acz.dxl file to the thumb drive to
keep it up to date.

2015-02-23 Thread Charles Cu nningham
All

A while back I had an unfortunate and nasty attack from some Russian
ransomeware hackers and later I also lost the hard drive on my laptop
machine.

I have assembled a new replacement Win 7 Pro machine, My Dx4 Win is
preserved in a backup folder from my old Windows XP machine. It still works
and I can edit the logs, OK, but I can't start if from a shortcut because
the required DLL is not there.

I need directions regarding how to re-install DX4Wn 8.05. and how to safely
backup and preserve my logs, and transfer them to the Save file in the new
DX4Win 8.05 Installatipn

I also need to know how to install the Updater, so I can Update my program,
DXCC Countries List, QSL managers etc.

Can anyone help? Thank you so much for your help!

Bob, have you looked in the Save folder of your DX4WIN program directory
(where DX4WIN.exe is found) to see if DX4WIN.tcp is there, together with
your .dxl log files?

When you move to Windows 7, you will need to reinstall DX4WIN anyway.
Be sure you install it somewhere other than Program Files or Program
Files (X86), because its data files are all stored in the program
directory.

Luis, I just tried a submission based on my log, and report the same
behaviour, multiple QSO's. I found out how to fix it though - when you
first did the submission, I think in the AWARDS box, you had all boxes
ticked (bands, modes, mixed).

In the Report Generator, select the AWARDS FLAGS button, select the Award,
and perform the ACTION Clear submitted.
You have 3 WPX awards to clear - Mixed, bands, mode.
Then go back to the award, when you select submission make sure that only 1
award type is selected; all should be ok

My luck lasted short time. Everything seemed to work FB after application of
all suggested power modifications, but there it is again, some of the USB/RS232
ports/devices get again inhibited by Windows, though in much greater time
intervals then before (sometimes all OK during 1 hour of operation, then
suddenly SteppIR or antenna rotor stop responding :(

re 1. That's interesting. The 735 and some Ten Tecs use the Icom protocol but
the frequency string is one byte shorter. I used the 735 years ago without
issue so I wouldn't have suspected the rig file. Good catch!
Ihave used my IC735 many years ago  with one of very early versions of
dx4winand it worked OK. In the meantime, replaced it qith IC706 for portable
operation and now decided to leave 735 in my summer home permanently. But, as
I made a new ci-v interface I suspected it rather than dx4win bug in new
version. Testing with DXLab  Commander told me that interface is OK and
something was wrong in dx4win, but couldn't find what. Jim, W5IFP detected a
problem in the rig file in new dx4win releases.
2. This doesn't make any sense. Any polling rate should work providing it is
not too short for the radio to respond. with 5000ms it will update every 5
seconds. You do need retries, with older Icoms they will ignore polling
requests if they are busy, for example spinning the dial. I typically use 4
and timeouts are rare... but any number should work. With a number too low the
rig might time out occasionally.Newer rigs can time out too but you almost
have to go out of your way to trigger a timeout because of the faster
processors. It has happened with my 7700 doing some major knob spinning (never
think to use the keypad ;-) In any case, you should not have to play with
these values to make it work. I've used from 500ms to 2 seconds without
trouble. I never tried faster than 1 second with my old 751A.
As I often change frequencies/ bands , a 5000ms polling time would be too long
for updating logging window. Besides, as I said, the only way to update it
quickly under this condition is to click on Receive in frequency control
window. Everything happens faster and automatically with a shorter polling
time. I know it shouldn't be too short, but 350 ms was OK and works all the
time.
3. It is not actually necessary to change this value in the rig file, all it
does is change the default speed. You can override in preferences.
I know, but as I have set ic735 jumper for 9600 bps, I thought it was natural
to set it as a default value in the rig file, not borhering to uncheck default
and enter 9600 in the preferences box.
I believe CI-V should be OFF for reliable performance with DX4Win. With older
rigs (probably including the 735) leaving this on can cause data collisions
and corrupt data which results in erroneous frequencies being reported. This
can be dangerous if using amps or tuners relying on C-IV for frequency
information.
I had set the jumper off prior to testing, but when it stopped to respond to
polling I thought I should put it back as Jim told me it worked OK with a new
rig file with his 735 that had trx jumper ON. So I set it ON again and after
having a success finding a good polling time compromise, I just left it ON. If
I see any collision issues, will set it to OFF again, but so far I don't
experience any problems with it. .But it's good to know that this could be an
issue in some cases.
I should mention that this has not happened to me recently... I no longer have
my 781 which was the last radio with which I experienced this problem. My
IC910H did not have this issue which is why I suspect the newer radios are
better at detecting collisions.

Can someone confirm if this data collision problem still happens with older
Icoms with V8.05? I seem to remember it did in 8.01 causing the bandmap to
shift erratically, but Paul did some tweaking in subsequent versions.

With a precious help of Jim Hargrave , W5IFP, the problem was solved!

(set in Radio Preferences). Some other close to these numbers may work also,
but this one works all the time in my case)

3. Speed in ic735.rig  file and preferences was changed from 1200 bps to
9600 bps and JU22 in radio was also set to 9600 bps (left position
contacts). Also, ci-v transceive jumper in radio ( the last contacts on the
right) was left ON.

RMX: transceiver band/frequency will not be reflected correctly in logging
window if radio is tuned to a frequency out of HAM band limits, which is OK.

Now, I am happy again.. :)

Subject: [Dx4win] Re-loaded version 8.05 now packet window spot time

Message-ID: 009701cbe7bb$5d8c0870$18a41950$@rr.com
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii

I had to re-load DX4WIN version 8.05 yesterday due to a HD failure and now I
cannot get the packet spots received to indicate the arrival instead of the
actual time. I right clicked on the packet window and highlighted SORT and
chose arrival as I always did and the spots indicate the actual time in
hours, minutes. In the past when I chose ARRIVAL it would indicate the aged
minutes the spot was received.

I still have 8.04 on the computer and tried it and it acts fine in this
regard.

How do I get this function back?

Thanks.

[Dx4win] Re contestmode (not showing the contestnumber field)

Hello fellow OM's,

My problem with not showing the contestnumber is

I minimized the startup window (not the QSO window), so the

Thanks again for helping me out.

Re: [Dx4win] RE : Moving windows

2010-04-09 Thread ALAN ZACK
If you have changed your preference setting for SKINS (same window as Leave
all windows
in original position option) away from NO SKINS SELECTED that is your
problem in ver. 8.02 or 8.03. If you select any other SKIN setting your
windows size and positions will be messed up the next time you open the
program.

It is too bad because I would rather use another skin than the default but
as you experienced it does not work right.

Maybe Paul has it on his to do list?

Re: [Dx4win] RE : Strange errors in ADIF export

2009-12-28 Thread Dave Sharred
Hi Paul

I agree of course with everything that you say; but the /SAN is on the QSL
card

The real problem is DX4WIN correctly identifies it as Corsica in the logging
program, but it is the ADIF export file from DX4WIN that is causing the
errors.

If they were consistent, then I would know how to fix the file!

Most of the errors I reported were in this category I think...

Hi all
re TK0KP/SAN, obviously the SAN is not part of the officuial callsign,
just an addition by the op to indicate he was operating from the
Sanguinaires islands (IOTA)
DX4Win will take that SAN for Sweden, which is logical with such a SA
suffix...
Basically, the SAN should be taken off the logged callsign.

HI

Just trying to cleanse a Club Log import; but it looks like I have some
corruptions in the ADIF export from DX4WIN; as shown below.

Not sure if this is a program issue, or just a database issue. I have
cleansed my log where I can

All comments appreciated!

RM3O (from 1980) - DX4WIN showed this as EU Russia but the export was
interpretted as KYRGYZSTAN. I did notice that the zone was set
incorrectly as z17 in my log entry, so maybe this screwed up things? I
will try this again

TK0KP/SAN - is showing in DX4WIN as Corsica (=OK); but in Clublog is
showing as Sweden ! The reason appears to be that the ADIF export
assigns 284 to this QSO !

Callsign: 1A0KM/IBYO Date: 1991-12-08 09:09:00 Band: 10
QSL: No
1A0KM/IBYO is an invalid QSO under the ARRL DXCC rules. This may depend
upon the date of your QSO. Club Log is storing this QSO, but marking it
as invalid. Set your logged DXCC ID to '0' or QSL state to 'I' to
suppress future notifications.

I set this in the QSO window to I for all DXCC awards. It would appear
that this does not suppress the QSO, or set the DXCC ID to zero in the
ADIF export ?

Callsign: FR/DJ6SI Date: 1992-05-14 19:57:00 Band: 20
QSL: Yes
FR/DJ6SI is an invalid QSO under the ARRL DXCC rules. This may depend
upon the date of your QSO. Club Log is storing this QSO, but marking it
as invalid. Set your logged DXCC ID to '0' or QSL state to 'I' to

I set this in the QSO window to I for all DXCC awards. It would appear

ADIF export ?

Callsign: EX2A Date: 1993-09-21 19:09:00 Band: 30QSL: No
Your log claims BELARUS. Overriding your choice and using KYRGYZSTAN.

DX4WIN showed KYRGYZSTAN; but it looked like the zone was shown
incorrect in the log as Z16. The ADIF export then showed this correctly
as ADIF country 135

[Dx4win] Re-Start

2009-12-25 Thread Louis Anciaux
Hola from Panama -

i did purchase the new version 8 and installed it some time back. Was
working for the most part, but did have an issue with FJ not being correct
and a couple other items, that didn't prevent me from using it.

I was away a couple months - Apr to June and as was tending my wife (post
surgery) to latter part of the year, was mostly concentrating on collecting
new entities for DXCC Submits (post issue of the #1641 160m DXCC).

My laptop was stolen (Break Entry) and lost all that data. Our system
here (wireless but very slow, like 5-10 kB!) and finally located an Apr log
that I had placed on the Ext HD - thankfully!

So am now attempting to re-enter the DX4WIN in a new laptop, and only gets
me to a DEMO page. I did have several saved logs, and same thing will
them. I have put the Lic and Invoice as indicated. But, seems is a step
missing here? Only getting the Demo version.

What's missing here? Appreciate your assists, as able.

Have a great Xmas Holiday and New Year next week.

With regards,
Louis HP3TA

My card was submitted to the DXCC desk and then bounced for the lack
of docs. NC1L says I still have to resubmit the card itself a second
time (either directly or through a checker). There used to be a
procedure where ARRL HQ would remember disallowed cards you had
submitted so if they were to be allowed in the future you didn't have
to resubmit the card. Anyone know why that won't work in this
case? I'm not complaining, just curious.

[Dx4win] RE : Another unexpected result

2009-03-15 Thread F6EXV
Hi
In your preferences, QSO tab, check the box regarding the confirmed
status : QSL in hand, LoTW or both...
You should check QSL in hand to get the result you are looking for...
By the way, there was a time when you could see both indications on the
confirmed column. I no longer see those Am I missing something ?

Is this the expected behaviour?

I would like to have a band map also. When you sort the spots you will
see
many spots for the same station and you have not an easy way to check
all
the band. It helps just to know what a station is when you listen a qso
or a
pileup. By the way ve3nea sells a program called band master. The bad
news
are that it needs to have radio control and there is no way (?) both
programs band master and dx4win have radio control over the same port.
ve3nea gives omnirig for free to make the trick but dx4win doesn't
support
it. Maybe the only way is a program which gives virtual com ports. So
this
way you must setup dx4win to see vitual com port 8 and band master to
see
virtual port 7. then we will have Virtual ports 7 and 8 to be directed
to
port 1 where the radio is connected. The problem is that i have not
found a
free program to do it that really works without other problems. Anyone
who
have tried one and it is free? I can find some of them in internet but
the
first one i had tried, messed my com ports after installed

First of all, if you have 7.06, you do NOT need these updates. They
 are already included.

DX4WIN.CTY #56 (country file, release notes on web site):

DX4WIN.AWD (award database, release notes on web site):

 DX4WIN.TCP (DX cluster nodes):

 This is the list of changes for DX4WIN.TCP;

  F4ERG-3 Added DxNet node
  IZ3MEZ-8 Added DX Spider node
  KI5T-2Added AR-Cluster node
  PA6NL-1 Deleted DX Spider node
  PP5MCBAdded WinCluster node
W2GSB Changed IP address to 96.224.230.165
  WA8DX at address wa8dx.servebeer.com:7300 is back on-line

As usual, make sure DX4WIN is closed and follow the installation instructions.

Note that the master callsign database is still called DX4WIN.MAS.
You will need to manually rename this file to DX4WIN.MAS1 to be
 compatible with 7.06

Jim, is this only for WriteLog conversions? And will this work with the ARRL
160 contest too? I imported OM K9OT's ADIF log from NA into DX4WIN for LOTW

I can donate his contest log if you need a guinea pig.

And I know we will be doing the CQ 160 contests coming up. I only need a few
states for 160 WAS.

When we finally make the big switch to a Windows contesting program, I expect
it will be N1MM, not WriteLog because of the cost. Sure hope it plays well with
DX4WIN.

updated the prefix mappings so that you should not notice any logbook

To further explain what Jim said:

I go to REPORTS DXCC LISTING select ALL.

The list that opens shows what countries you have WORKED, MAILED a QSL
to, SUBMITTED, or CONFIRMED. If you see a W for WORKED, you double
click on the W and it will take you to that QSO so you can send a card,
etc. Also, it will take you to the first QSO, you may have to use the
slider bar, (next to the time window) to find the latest QSO.

Re: [Dx4win] Re: Dx4win Digest, Vol 54, Issue 12

2008-10-12 Thread Les Kalmus

David,

You need to do the following:

Set up several com ports in the MH router. In my case, I use com5, 6, 7, 8.
In the router on the ports tab, select a com port to control the radio
with. I use com5.

Click the set button next to com5 and select the radio from the list.
Assuming the MH cables are connected to the radio, the router should now
be communicating with the radio via the DK.

Once this works, go into preferences in DX4WIN and on the radio tab,
select the radio, then select the same com port you selected in the
router, i.e. com5.
For your radio, I believe you must select 4800 as the baud rate. You
will have to play with the DTS/RTS setting, but I think checking high
for both may work.

What you will have done is set up the radio to be controlled by your
Digi Keyer by setting up the MH router.
You will have also set up the DK to be controlled by DX4WIN. DX4WIN will
think it's connected to an actual com port when it is really connected
to a software port in the MH router. The commands it gives to and
receives from the radio are actually coming from the router which
interprets all that stuff and talks to the radio which thinks its
talking to the software.

Sound complex but it's not once you get the hang of it.

I dont have the radio connected because i also use and have connected

seeing the radio a ft1000mp has only one serial port (cat input)
I have no idea on how to also connect the radio to the only cat input.

Anyone using a micro ham interface and dx4win.???

I'd be interested in how you have it all connected

As always Thanks to the people who took the time to try out my problem

Re: [Dx4win] Re: Country File Correction

2008-09-24 Thread F6EXV

Hi all
As previously mentionned, determining the country (sorry, the entity)
out of a TO callsign cannot be automated.
The same call may be used once from FM, once from FG, and also from
other entities

The prefix has to be entered on each case.
If a callsign is repeated in your log, it will show the last entity for
which it was validated.
Let's say you work TO5FJ in 2008. You must enter FJ on the first
contact. If you work that station again, DX4Win will reckognize it as
FJ, and you can hit enter if correct.
If the call is reissued for let's say FG, the next time you work it, you
will have to enter FG in the prefix field manually etc...
French administration does not care about DXCC... Yes, I know, they
should, but the US does not either (1x1 callsigns)... HI HI

The contacts log here correctly. The starting date is January 6, 2008. Most
likely he entered the call as T-zero-5FJ instead of T-oh-5FJ.

TO prefixes aren't mapped. TO callsigns are mapped. Close you log. Go to
File - Databases - Countries. Find the country of interest. Click on the
Callsign tab to see the callsign mappings.

[Dx4win] RE: QSLing Direct

2008-09-06 Thread J.F. Samuels
Jim, I like your tongue-in-cheek query!

Really, everyone has slightly different ways of preparing to QSL. Some do
it right away, some infrequently, some use a service, others use a
combination of ARRL Outgoing service and direct. I am of the latter, and I
don't QSL very frequently. When I do, I want to make sure that I have the
best address possible, particularly for the direct ones; now each overseas
QSL costs me over $3.00.

I start by searching for Label=Y and Method=Direct. When I hit F3 in
the CALL field, I get a window that is the result of searching the
following:

1. QRZ! on my disk
2. ON6DP Manager List
3. World-wide IBM Hams list
4. Current GO-List

By inspecting the above, I can (usually) make a quick determination of the
best route. I trust the GOLIST most and they will supply a route too.
Whatever route I select, I highlight it and copy it (Ctrl-C or right-click
and use the options there) to the clipboard. For mailing direct to a call, I
put the station's call in the Manager field. If the QSO Manager call is
right, I just click in the QSO Manager field and use Ctrl-E to bring up the
manager address. If the address is right, I close the box and go on. If
not, I highlight the incorrect address, and paste in the correct one
(Ctrl-V). Sometimes I have to shorten the name or address fields to fit
properly on labels. Then I save the address, and go on to the next call
using PF10. Sometimes I change a direct routing to Bureau or Other.

It sounds complicated, but QSLing is an art, not a science! And, it goes
quickly once you've started.

I use a special .BAT file in the EXTDATA folder to call a free program
called QGREP. That program searches the ON6DP and IBM Hams lists, or any
other lists you have, and makes the output available for display. Send me
an Email if you want a copy of the .BAT file.

John, K2CIB

I have a bunch of QSOs with USA stations and are marked for labels (QSL
method = Direct). There is nothing in the QSL Manager box for any of
those QSOs.

How do I make DX4WIN print both the QSO *and* the address labels together
for all those QSOs (which it can look up from the local RAC callbook
database)?

Several have asked for the solution so hear goes. Credit to David, G4RQI for
getting me headed down this path.

It appears you do not get the option to specify a COM port in the MMTTY plug-in
being used with DX4WIN. David suggested I setup the MMTTY program itself
(outside of DX4WIN), specifying my PTT COM port on the TX tab of the setup
options and on the MISC tab set the TX port to COM-Txd(FSK). Make sure MMTTY
works perfectly by itself and then try to use it from DX4WIN.

Now, back to DX4WIN MMTTY. Make sure you do not specify the COM port for PTT
here. You will get an error like Port already in use if you do. To check
this: From the DX4WIN MMTTY window press CONTROL S and the window to set the
PTT port comes up. I set mine to PTT CONTROL and RTS and the error stopped.

After doing that, my FSK RTTY using COM1 for data and PTT is working fine.

I have been using DX4WIN 7.03.16 for many months now without problem.
Suddenly a quirk has developed, and I need help please.

Now, as I open DX4WIN, all windows open as prearranged except my main QSO
window. Instead, I am now getting an ERROR window on startup which says:

Master file: C: Program Files\dx4w703A\DX4WIN.MAS not found, no
calls loaded

If I click on OK ...or Exit X, this ERROR window goes away and my QSO
window opens for use.

Can someone please tell me why this is happening, and how to fix? Many
tnxTed, N8GZ

download the latest file dx4win.mas from ad1c page
http://dx4win.ad1c.us/download/master/DX4WMAS_20080709.zip
Put this file to
C: Program Files\dx4w703A\
directory
You probably have the master callsign lookup window open. If you don't use
it you don't need to download, etc. Just close the window and i think that
dx4win will stop to ask you the file. By the way (for the newer users) the
master window has a choice if you right click over it.

dx4win.mas is your master callsign lookup file. Download the master.dta
file from
www.k5zd/scp. Right click in the DX4WIN Master Call window. Click on
convert.
Convert the master.dta file. This will put the master database in dx4win
format.
Now when you enter a call in the callsign window you have a instant
callsign lookup
that beats against about 125,000 active calls that were recorded in recent
contest

logs...Problem solved... Fun..

Usually buro workers or not worth the time to send back one or two cards.

Well it must not be strictly enforced as I periodically get US QSO cards
from the buro.

Re: [Dx4win] Re: Sending USA-USA Cards to Bureau YES

2008-06-27 Thread Art - W6KY
John is right... Here is the FAQ's straight from the ARRL web page:

Question: Can I send QSL cards to US QSL Managers through the Bureau?
Answer: Yes you can as long as you or the station you made contact with was
outside the 48 contiguous states at the time.

Question: Can I QSL US Amateurs through the Bureau system?
Answer: No you cannot send cards to other US hams through the Bureau UNLESS you
or the other station was DX at the time and your QSL card indicates this. (ex.
you make a contact with XE/K1TLK or you are in Mexico and your QSL card
indicates that is where you were at the time of the contact.)

So  ZD8R via N6ND can go via the bureau to N6ND..And there I thought
I knew everything!!   Thanks John...

One exception is when you are sending a QSL to a USA manager of a non-USA
station.  This is allowed.

The ARRL QSL Bureau does NOT handle US-to-US cards, unless their web page
is out of date.  That statement is the very first thing on the outgoing
