The Soviet aircraft had both solid state and tube radios and other navigation equipment. The tubes were used both as a backup, and for EMP protection after a nuclear attack. [Elecraft] [K1 2277] VFO Alignment--VFO Range Test
I'm not succeeding in changing the VFO frequency for the K1 range test. (80 kHz set up). On start-up, I see a number "6", then "986", and then "86.2" which stays on the display. If I hold EDIT it shows OPF. If I hold DISPLAY it shows OSC and the display shows "3" and then "098". So far so good. The next step is to make sure that the VFO frequency goes up as the VFO knob is rotated counter-clockwise. I'm seeing no change as I rotate the VFO knob, so off to troubleshooting in Appendix E. At Problem 40: Supply voltage is 13.23 V, Solder is Kester 44, 0.015. L1 leads are properly stripped and show 0 ohms resistance across the leads. --How do I check crystals? I see infinite resistance between the leads. I used minimum solder time, about 2-3 seconds as I recall. At problem 41: Anode voltage was 3 V (measured with black lead on the ground, and red on the anode) on D3 and 6 V on D4. I'm not sure which is the OFFSET pot. I think it is C20, but I have not found a way to verify in the manual. C13 is in the TR Switch and Transmitter section. The varactor flat side is facing the same direction as the transistors near them: flat side towards the front. I'm probably missing something simple, but it is not popping up for me. [Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement
Good Evening, A soggy day today; nice to stay inside next to the fire. The wet is causing trouble in the phone lines though. I think the longest I've kept an Internet connection all day is fifteen minutes! I am not sure what happened but maybe one of the mountain's vistors shot up a connection box. Most likely someone was sighting in their rifle. I have had better luck on HF however. Twenty meters was open to 2 and 8 land while I was eating dinner and during the week it was open quite nicely into 5 land. There is a bit of QSB now but if you either speed up or slow down you'll defeat the rapid flutter. Otherwise there is a wagon wheel effect which makes for tough copy. Forty meters was open last night from the Plains into Alaska. I also heard a Hawaiian station in contact with a JA. Sunspot 960 (may it rest in peace) did its job while it was in existence. The deer are back eating the yard again. They also like the new growth on the fir and hemlock. I expect to see elk in the front yard soon because they get fat on the tree's new growth. However, the nearby clearcuts have a lot to eat from the replanting which occurred a few months ago. It is much lower so they don't need to work too hard. Mine is over six feet off the ground so they would have to reach :) But I do have quite a few trees leaning at between 10 and 45 degrees which are still growing. Hopefully the elk will get a chance to eat some of that before I am forced to cut them down. Re: [Elecraft] KXB30 sensitivity better than KXB3080?
Martin, I would be hesitant to make comparisons based on signals on the air. The signal propagation can make a big difference. If you have a signal generator that will produce a measurable (and repeatable output, that can be used for a valid comparison. Normally, the 30 meter signals are as good or better with the 3080 option as they were with the 30 meter option. You may have a problem, but first try adjusting the 30 meter trimmers. For accuracy in adjustment, they must be adjusted with an insulated screwdriver blade - even a metallic screwdriver wrapped with tape will cause some de-tuning during adjustment and you must find the proper tuning point by trial and error. 73, Don W3FPR Martin (VA3SIE) wrote: Hi, I wonder if anyone else has an observation about the sensitivity of the KX1 on 30m with the original 30m board compared to the 30 & 80m board? The Soviets used tubes in their electronics back then. because their available industrial resources couldn't make and support solid-state electronics of the type needed. They could have imported all the solid-state devices needed, but they decided it was more important not to become dependent on foreign technology. We could learn something from that. Even today, tubes have some specialized uses. Every microwave oven has one. And the New Horizons mission to Pluto, which is the fastest manmade object in history, has a couple of Traveling Wave Tubes (TWTs) aboard for the radio. 73 de Jim, N2EY ** See what's free at http://www.aol.com. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] KXB30 sensitivity better than KXB3080?
Hi, I wonder if anyone else has an observation about the sensitivity of the KX1 on 30m with the original 30m board compared to the 30 & 80m board? I've noticed that signals are not as strong on 30m now with the new board. For example, the RTTY station on 10100kHz is at best a 4x5 whereas it used to be 5x9. I can only hear the strongest CW stations. 20m & 40m are as good as before. I don't know how good 80m is. It works but I have no basis for comparison. Any suggestion where to start trouble-shooting? I assume the problem will be in the main SMD-loaded board rather than the T2 changes or the LPF-1 board, since those other parts of the mod would affect 20m/40m performance and TX performance... which seems fine. All the tests in the assembly manual passed, the correct voltages were present at the correct times. I'll repeat those tests to make double sure. I suppose then I will double-check all the connections to the main KX1 board from the KXB3080 board. Any other suggestions? Anyone else had a problem? Cheers & 73 Martin. Re: [Elecraft] KPA100 Power Malfunction
Ed, Lack of power control with the KPA100 installed normally points to a failure of the KPA100 wattmeter circuit. Start with replacing the 1N5711 diodes D16 and D17. It could also be that U5 and/or U6 are not performing properly. If your KPA100 was working at one time and there is *any* possibility that you encountered a lightning surge, then D16 and D17 are the most likely suspects. If it has not worked before, look at the soldering (especially U5 and U6, check all 6 leads of T4 for proper orientation and tinning - make certain the red wire goes through the center of T4 and the bare wire from the SO239 jack goes to hole #6. There are a few other possibilities, but those should get you started on the right track. The bottom line is that the base K2 is not getting a proper indication of power output from the KPA100 wattmeter and the base K2 develops full output because it thinks the power output is low - in other words, you do not have power control. When you totally remove the amplifier and the power control is restored to normal, that indicates that the K2 power control is functioning and the problem is in the KPA100 wattmeter. 73, Don W3FPR eKotz wrote: When the KPA100 is not installed, my K2/QRP operates normally. [Elecraft] Anderson "Power Pole" connectors...
Interesting assessment! Just received this from a friend who knew that I (and many others) used Anderson Power Pole connectors quite a bit. Forewarned is forearmed! Do not try and substitute the "Chinese copies" of the Anderson Power Pole connectors marketed by TYCO under the AMP name, for the "real thing"!!! They fit together terribly, the contacts are inferior to the Anderson ones. Maybe the "what's his name" CEO wanted more profits to buy more $6500 shower curtains! I have been meaning to pass this along some time ago. I got a sample package from TYCO for possible use for an "engineering project" I was involved in. I was putting some of these on some ham stuff a few days ago and didn't think I'd still had any of the samples left! They LOOK identical, but the housings do not nest together neatly like the originals. They are not compatible with the originals. The dovetails in the nesting lugs are slightly bigger. Only "ID" on them is the word "China" molded into the rear edge (as opposed to Anderson on the originals). Also the contacts mate with the Anderson connectors but not really reliably. Anyway, these things are crap! They "look" OK, but they are not carefully made. Steer clear of them. I think Allied Electronics has them in their line, and possibly others. [Elecraft] K2/100 and KPA100 SWR bridges
Hi , I would have to say that the K2/100, coupled with the KAT00 is probably one of the few radios I know of that have two SWR bridges in series/parallel. How do they work together? The VRFDET of both is joined together via pin 7 of J3 between the ATU and the KPA100 and ultimately end up on pin 2 of the main MCU on the control board. Ok, that detects power levels I believe, but what happens if either SWR bridge stops functioning? The VFWD and VREFL lines from each SWR bridge both go to their respective MCU's on the boards they are derived from, and one can only assume they dissapear as a signal back to the main MCU again via the Aux Bus ??? But if they do and are in parallel, once again, how do they work? I imagine there is some programming magic applied here somewhere. I can also see that removing the SWR bridge when you plugged a KPA100 in would be virtually impossible, but one of the big NO NO's in Ham Radio is putting your SWR bridge before the ATU, so how does Elecraft get away with this one? I seem to remember the KAT2 can be used in series with outboard amps and the like, but I also seem to remember they were "removed" by software...as such. Perhaps this applies to what I am asking about, but I think not especially after having diodes shorted in the KPA100 and KAT100 seperately and both times the K2 was affected the same way.( ok I forget to remove my antennas when lighting is around) Just curious, and thought it might realign the Reflector with radio problems rather than horticulture? Re: [Elecraft] {K1 2277] VFO Alignment--VFO Range selection, 40m, 20m.
Rich, Both 80 and 150 kHz have their adherents. 80 kHz will give you tuning that's less touchy, though I've never had trouble with 150 kHz, even without the "felt mod." The wider band will let you hear WWV on 10 MHz and get you into some less crowded frequencies -- especially helpful when there's a big contest on, for example. You can't go "wrong" either way, I don't think. You might search the archives for "K1 tuning range" for more opinions. AFAIK, CW is the only digital mode supported by the K1. Good luck. I couldn't bring myself to get rid of it as it just worked too well and I never forgot how to make it work no matter how long it had been since I picked it up. I also have an Icom IC-T8A three-band handheld and an IC-706mkII. Both radios have their manuals sitting next to them as I can never remember how all the features work. Most bad UI designs come from feature overload. Once you put a computer in the box the tendency on the part of programmers is to just keep adding little features just because they can. The other source of bad UI design is the desire to make the application "customizable". BTW, I am keeping my IC-2A. 73 de Brian, WB6RQN Brian Lloyd - brian HYPHEN wb6rqn AT lloyd DOT com ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. RE: [Elecraft] Best Handi-Talki Out There Now?
I have an Icom WM32A that I picked up in 1999. Works fine, when I can figure out how to work it. Claims to have an "Intuitive" interface. Perhaps to C3PO or R2D2, or one of their human clones, but not to this mere mortal. Otherwise it works fine. It is both 144 and 440 MHz and capable of full duplex operation using both of those bands. Guess that's one of the "features" everyone needed. Right Receives both FM and AM and tunes the aircraft and weather frequencies. This was supposedly, part of their early warning over-the-horizon ICBM missle tracking, missle attack alert system. You got to admit - this dwarfs the freedom antennas of VOA. Wow, RF antenna-design must be in solid shape in Russia. When I learned Karnaugh Mapping in school - they used to talk about the students in Russia, having to work with 12-variable karnaugh maps. Back in the cold war, they talked about the russian jet fighters - which still had vacuum tube VHF rigs in them. Apparently, they had a better natural anti-jamming ability, that some of our hot U.S. fighters of those days. Fred, N3CSY Park yourself in front of a world of choices in alternative vehicles. I've been happy with my VX-6R, although I understand that you can't connect it to a grounded mobile antenna with the cigarette-lighter charger attached or bad things happen (maybe a DC block in the antenna line would help, but I haven't verified that). Re: [Elecraft] K2: Firmware Escrow
There is a very good alternative to software escrow: open software. Since the K3 software is hardware-specific, it is unlikely that it will give other vendors a leg up to see the Elecraft source code. So two things happen by making Elecraft's software open: 1. It solves the escrow problem by automatically creating multiple copies of the source tree. I know I would grab a copy and I am sure others would too. 2. Anyone can generate a software build. Even if Elecraft stopped developing a particular radio, owners can still enhance their equipment, much in the way we still have folks experimenting with older vacuum tube (valve) kit today. 2. Others with good ideas can add functionality and features to the radio without having to wait for Elecraft to get around to it. Elecraft can even fold good, well thought-out features back into the "official" source tree. I also have played QRP the whole way -hi! I've been trying to hike these sections for so long that my trail map is coming apart. I had to tape it back together this morning -hi! After this next hike I'll have hiked around 120 miles on the PA AT. I've hiked past thirteen Pennsylvania AT Shelters and for most of this hike Trevor Boy, my dog has been hiking with me. I must finish this hike before my faithful hiking partner gets to old. Trevor Boy is eight years old now, but still acts like a pup -hi! If the weather holds, I'll hike next week maybe Thursday and Friday. I'll post details as it gets closer to Thursday. Re: [OT] Re: [Elecraft] English
Buckeye is also the term used in the mountains of Western North Carolina. I have never heard them called a horse chestnut. I only know of one use for them; when I was a child an elderly neighbor always carried one in his pocket to prevent constipation. As I remember it, the wood is very coarse and grainy and not useful for much of anything. Our foresters treat them as trash trees and usually just fell them and leave them lay. I have read a lot on this reflector about the K3, but am not motivated in the least to purchase one. I'm extremely happy with my K2/100 and plan to make do with it. One of the big attractions of the K2 for me was being able to start with a pile of parts and end up with a beautiful little rig that I had assembled myself. Best wishes to Elecraft on the success of the K3, but I don't plan to be an owner. 72, Jim - W4BQP ARES EC, Spartanburg Co., SC Chris Kantarjiev wrote: "Buckeye" is an Ohio term ... though I've no idea how much farther it may have spread. 73 de chris K6DBG ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. It started to be used more and more on HF about 2 months ago, the explosion in activity follwed similar "what's this mode" postings to the digitalradio Yahoo Group. There's even an internet sked arranging page http://www.chris.org/cgi-bin/jt65talk for terrestrial JT65A. The "normal" use of the mode is for EME. You need WSJT software to use it. Andrew K3UK wrote a "bozo's guide" to using JT65 on HF:- http://www.obriensweb.com/bozoguidejt65a.htm I've actually used it myself, and worked K1JT, Joe Taylor, the author of the WSJT package, on 20m. I've also worked 9V1QQ, Bob, in Singapore. It's an interesting mode to tinker with but I soon slipped back to CW and my K2 when the novelty wore off! Using JT65 involves fixed TX/RX time slots (e.g TX on odd minute/RX on even minute) and very little data is passed. The actual "exchange" takes the form of 2 alternating tones of particular frequency which "hard code" the signal report of "OOO", the acknowledgement of a received report "RO" and the end of the QSO "73". If you listen to a full QSO it will take 5 minutes as each part of the QSO is done sequentially, in 1 minute timeslots. There are other modulation modes in the WSJT package for Meteor Scatter and other esoteric V/UHF propagation modes. HTH!
