Re: [Elecraft] ELECRAFT TO TOKYO HY-POWER 2.5
Mine works just fine without ALC. I Don't believe the anti-liability stuff with ALC connections from amp producers. If you have your K3 using ALC and provide a consistent output to your amp then it isn't an issue. If you try to run over the 1.5kw limit for Amateur operation, it is an issue. Steve, This is the reason I spent my money on the Hakko de-soldering gun. I was a test builder and found myself doing quite a number of mods. Many of us HAMs are accused of it. Good things grow under rocks. It would be the dark side! The issue is assuming what is sent on the internet is private? No way. Many have no idea as to what is disclosed from their own PC. Check the cookies... my God! We give a way so much personal information. But then without doing so, you struggle and waste time. Mistakes can happen. Whatever one writes, consider the consequences and don't forget: it can be found on the internet. If you don't want it known, send it out USPS. If someone else should not follow one's perceived protocol: s happens. No one is perfect. I am not, Don is a lot closer. I have mistakenly sent out things I didn't want to or sent them to the wrong recipient with no malice intended. I recently did so. The wrong recipient told me he knew they weren't for him so just deleted them. Then he told me the last one I wrote was quite good. Oh, well. S happens. I can't get it back. I screwed up (again!) and could not retract the simple but very bad mistake. I didn't dwell. Moved on to this issue. Let's all lighten up and be forgiving because none of us is perfect. When you install the filter you set the "cut in" frequency with the utility. Keep in mind the actual width of the filter vs the "named" frequency, there IS a diffference. There is documentation somewhere or you can measure it, or I can look it up in my notes. I usually set my filters to "cut in" a bit above their actual width. For instance, the 250 filters are really 365 (if I remember correctly, and this is probably the one that is the fartherest off. So I set it to cut in at 400 (good to know the freqs because the 400 is about 435 so you DO NOT need both the 250 and the 400, they are virtually the same). As you narrow the bandwidth via the front panel the radio automatically switches to the next filter as you reach your specified cut in frequency (and the filter currrently in use it displayed on the front panel). You don't have to remember anything or turn it on manually, it is all automatic. I have the 2.7, 1.8 (set to 2.0 cut in), the 500 (set to come on at 550 I think), and the 250 set to come in at 400. I will be buying the 1000 next so I have a bit wider receive when scanning for RTTY or CW, then narrow the bandwidth if needed to work them. The Elecraft external preamp with 0.7 dB noise figure and 18 dB gain helps a lot: K3 with PR6 external preamp preamp on 0.9 dB And the preamp is pretty robust to strong signals. For terrestrial signals in a quiet rural area, a noise figure of 4dB or less is probably adequate. For EME, you want less. Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft Amps
High power is helpful to hold onto a frequency. When another high power amp comes on and your power is lower, the amp helps, big time. I was a die hard QRP'er, but on lower bands when the conditions are not great, the amp makes a huge difference. I run a THP HL-2.5Kfx whenever needed and no second thoughts. When the bands get better, my electric bill will much lower. I agree about the comments of Elecraft designing a do it all amp including the remote tuning option. The day that happens, The THP might, not likely, but might hit the used market. Hard to part with a perfect output design like this particular THP. I have tried the rest. Perhaps the Elecraft amps will use similar design, then who could resist a build it yourself amp, I couldn't. Re: [Elecraft] K3: Using the MFJ-998 IntelliTuner
I did the same thing with the 994 with an ALS600. I would use the tune set at 10 watts from the K3. If the SWR wouldn't come down low enough, I selected a different antenna with my remote antenna switch, retuned and then switched back to the desired antenna and that would reset the memory and retune. Resetting the power would not clear the already stored memory. This would be a nice feature to have with any remote tuner... to avoid the cabling which can be a big pain. 73, Bill K9YEQ -Original Message- Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K3: Using the MFJ-998 IntelliTuner I do the same here Phil. When something goes wrong, I switch the DC off and back on to reset the 998 but I'm still not totally satisfied. I'm looking into using a multiconductor cable wired directly to the 998's control switches for complete remote control. Of course I couldn't actually see it's display.Maybe a camera? A Noise Gate, such as is used in the K3, acts much like an FM squelch does on receive. It looks at Tx audio amplitude and if a signal exceeds that amplitude, it opens the audio path for a certain period of time. Whenever an audio peak exceeds the threshold, the timer is re-triggered. Thus, continuous speech will keep the gate open. The timer is necessary to allow softer parts of speech to pass without distortion. Thus, the Noise Gate is not a clipper or "waveform modifier" and introduces no crossover or other distortion when it is activated. In this case, the speech overrides the noise source during speech, and the timer silences the audio path when there is no speech. However, if the threshold is too high, then "leading edge" distortion may result. A Downward Expander changes the gain (slope, or transfer function) of the input amplifier for signals below the threshold. This can result in crossover and other distortion for the low-level components of speech. On the other hand, it may also result in reduced amplitude of the noise source itself even when speech is present due to the slope of the downward expansion. Gating in the form of clipping occurs when the downward expansion slope results in zero gain. The most common misadjustment of the Noise Gate is to set the threshold too close to the noise source's level. This can result in the noise source triggering the audio, resulting in a scratchy or staccato effect. In most cases, *increasing* the threshold beyond that point will result in the desired "squelching" of the noise source, while still allowing speech to pass. 73, Lyle KK7P __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

I did that with an MFJ 994, which worked ok up to 600 watts, but not legal limit. 73, Bill K9YEQ K2 & KX1 (Field tester); K3; W2; mini mods -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Phil Hystad Sent: Monday, January 25, 2010 11:03 PM To: Elecraft Discussion List Subject: [Elecraft] K3: ATU but a bigger version I really like the way that the K3 ATU works. Sure, a separate "bigger" box container. I don't really like some of the auto-tuners that I have seen that are in automatic mode and retune behind the scenes (so to say). I like to have some control over my auto-tuner. So, is there any hope that Elecraft might someday build a big 1500 watt capable ATU along the same style as the ATU in the K3? [Elecraft] Cable for HL-2.5Kfx to K3
I had previously posted that I needed the correct cable for my amp and Bob at Array Solutions emailed me and fixed my problem faster than I could bat an eyelash. Got the right cable and set the amp for "Y" Yeasu and the amp now tracks the K3. It also has the ALC cable with it and that also does what I expect. Using the W2 wattmeter protects the amp if I have the wrong antenna from my remote. Now all that is left is to get the remote situation and the tuner to do that job. I am looking at both the HC 1.5Kfx auto tuner and the Palstar At-Auto to figure out what to order next. I am somewhat afraid of the MFJ-998 as I want a 1.1 to 1 or less and can already to 1.7 to 1 with the antennas I have. I will keep investigating. I have an Alinco DM-330MVT power supply that has significant birdies on 160M. The power supply has a nice feature that allows you to move the birdies, which makes it obvious that the birdies are originating from the power supply. The birdies are at least 1 S-unit above the background noise. Here's what I've done to try to eliminate them: - added a filter connected to the DC output consisting of 4 toroid beads (type 77) in series on each side and 0.1 caps across the leads and from each lead to ground. I also have both leads going about 10 turns through a type 77 toroid to filter common mode birdies. - I've put 2 snap on type toroids on the AC line as well as wound the ac cord through a T200-1 toroid (which I had lying around) . - I shielded all of the power leads from the power supply to all of the equipment that it powers (mostly my K2, KAT100 and external speaker/amp), with the shields connected to both the power supply and the K2 chassis grounds. - I've moved the power supply away from my K2 (about 5' away). All of this seems to have absolutely no affect on the birdies. To add to the mystery, the birdies are there only when I have an antenna connected to the K2, so it would appear that the Power supply is radiating, but with all of the wires to it filtered and the DC lines shielded, where can it be radiating from - (as a test I put the whole power supply inside a metal file box and grounded that to no effect. So, can anyone explain this? Other than buying a new power supply, what do I do now? Except for the birdies on 160M, this is a nice power supply that's small enough to fit into an attaché case with my K2, KAT100, mic and key. Thanks. When selected in SETUP, this option allows the W2 Interface to run as a global floating window. It will stay on top of all other application's windows regardless of which window has focus. Requires closing and restarting the program before taking effect. - Added support for multiple instances. You can now control multiple W2's by using multiple copies of the program running simultaneously, each with it's own preferences (serial port, window positions, etc). You need to make a copy of the executable file and rename it to whatever name you want to use to identify the W2 it will connect to. For example, you could name one of the executables "W2 K3-HF.exe" and another "W2 Yaesu-VHF.exe". The filename is used to create a unique preferences file and is also displayed in the title bar of the Interface window. There are more elegant ways to do this, and I may further refine it in a future release, but this was relatively easy to implement and works FB. It should be able to handle any number of W2's - IF you have the W2's, a fast PC with lots of RAM, lots of disk space to hold all the .exe's, and lots of serial ports. :-) - Numerous internal changes and tweaks. Daniel, A half wave end fed at 40 meters will have extraordinarily high impedance. Shorten it and you find the KX1 will tune. In this config my Icom 703Plus tuned all bands and forward power was a bit diminished. The Elecraft KX-1 would not tune 40M only. KX1 is getting respectable power and swr on 80, 30 and 20 and 40 will throw a high power value and r9.9. Getting some advice from this reflector (Thanks to Dale - WC7S in WY) and the antenna manufacturer I then switched out the 3 foot coax with a 25 foot coax between the balun and transceiver. In this config my Icom 703Plus tunes all bands at near SWR 1.0 and forward power is exactly at what is set. The 703Plus works like a champ and even better in this config. Now the Elecraft KX1 has high SWR r9.9 on 80, 40, 30 and reads between r3-r5?? on 20M with respectable power levels on all bands. I would have thought the KX1 to perform better as well? Now the 703 is perfect and the KX1 is down on all 4 bands? Could someone help me understand why this might now be? I realize the KX1 tuner is smaller capacity than the Icom internal tuner - but this antenna configuration is quite respectable. I read many anecdotes of the sorts of "I threw a wire up in a tree with my KX1 and it tunes and works lots and lots of countries." This isn't exactly throwing a wire in a tree but a fairly standard antenna setup. Is there not enough overall power from the KX1? I put a call into Elecraft before/at the holiday and they are getting an answer for me on my previous question as to how to get the KX1 to send a continuous wave when the KXAT1 is in bypass for the external tuner. It appears to me that it sends dits or dahs when ATU is set to external tuner ATU == CAL. I would try to study the situation more with the THP HC200-AT autotuner but I'm unclear at the moment what the theory/design is with the KXAT1 in bypass mode. I think you will find some sound advice on this forum, LS. You raise a good question. I think the key is that you have done no significant kit building to date. There is nothing fundamentally more difficult about building a K2 vs. a K1. Both involve soldering lots of discrete components onto a PCB and then following the instructions for test and alignment using relatively simple test equipment. The K2 process takes longer and can be more time consuming, depending upon what options you select. Then again, even the K1 has what seems to be a never-ending pile of capacitors to install. I've successfully done both kits and have been pleased with the results. Given where you are at with kit building, I'm going to suggest a third alternative. Start out by building some of the small inexpensive test equipment kits that Elecraft offers, such as the dummy load, the 3 band signal generator, a balun, the step attenuator, etc. All of these will be helpful no matter which transceiver you ultimately decide to build. More importantly, they will get you comfortable with following the Elecraft instructions, soldering components, and testing a final product. After you have two or three of these kits under our belt, then start thinking about a transceiver. Along with your soldering iron, I would recommend that you invest up-front in an anti-static mat and accessories, good screwdrivers and pliers, and a dependable DVM intended for solid state equipment. Whatever direction you decide on, don't be shy about asking for advice here. 73 ... Typically one only needs to decrease HI CUT and the center frequency takes care of itself. When the HI CUT gets so low that intelligibility is beginning to decay, a slight change upward in LO CUT can improve things, but normally LO CUT is a "set and forget" control for SSB - mine normally stays at 0.15, 0.20 or 0.25. In other words, the J1 connector was not in place earlier when your K1 was working. If that assumption is correct, then I'd look very very closely at the K1's RF PCB soldered connections to the J1 connector. Especially, check for no solder bridges to ground (pins 5, 6, and 7) from signal pins 3, 4, or 8. My money says that during J1 installation, either pin 4 or pin 8 got shorted to ground with a solder bridge. Check pins 3, 4, and 8 with an ohm-meter to ground (pin 5, 6, or 7). If you get a very low resistance, then that's your problem. And since this is at the RF board connector J1, the same symptoms would show regardless of the KNB1 being in place. Good luck. When I am running on batteries the power output on 20m is 2 bars or if I understand the manual correctly that would be about 1 watt. Using my AC adapter I get 4 bars or 2 watts. On 20m I get 2.5 watts on the batteries and 3 watts on AC. Does this sound about right? Next, when you change bands I believe you have to tune the antenna to the new band is that correct? Re: [Elecraft] K3 KAT3 Antenna Tuner Tutorial
Windy, I usually push the ATU tune whenever I change bands but have never relied upon the tuner to manage. Here's the manual: ATU (KAT3) If you have the KAT3 antenna tuner installed, you can select ANT1 or ANT2 by tapping ANT . Hold ATU to select AUTO (autotune enabled) or BYPASS. If the ATU icon is on, the antenna can be matched for best SWR by tapping ATU TUNE . Up to 30 ATU settings are saved for both antennas on every band. The ATU icon will flash briefly whenever new settings are automatically loaded. Tapping ATU TUNE a second time within 5 seconds of a match attempt will retry using a more extensive search. This may improve the match when using high-SWR or narrow-band loads. I don't believe this answers the question as to when the tuner invokes an automatic retune, however. 73, Bill K9YEQ -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of KM5Q Sent: Thursday, October 22, 2009 2:02 PM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K3 KAT3 Antenna Tuner Tutorial Sure Bill. So then I re-tune, of course. As far as I can observe, that seems to wipe out the "wet" setting that was recorded at some nearby frequency. Seems OK. I just have to accept that I don't know where the segments are, and so I keep an eye on the SWR when I QSY (normal habit anyway). I'll await any more helpful info from the creators. I accept that it may be simple "just keep doing what you are doing". It isn't a problem, I'll await any further understanding of the rules that the ATU memories follow. Most DOS programs will run in the "DOS-box", and it will support most USB devices as well as 'legacy hardware' like serial ports. Win2K Pro is a solid operating system even though it does not have all the "whiz-bang" GUI features of XP and Vista, but it can operate without all the extra glut and just keeps 'slugging along' with no problems. 73, Don W3FPR Julius Fazekas n2wn wrote: > Ron hits it on the head... Re: [Elecraft] Difficulty with K3 Utility RS232 Interface
I will ditto Don's comment. I regularly test the firmware and have had no issues. I use the latest firmware files and I have rolled back once only to turn around and load the updated firmware beta again. Every release goes through thorough testing and I have had no issues other than suggestions. There may some feature bugs but these were always add-ons or updates to configurations that needed improvement. 73, Bill K9YEQ K2 #35; KX1 #35; K3 #1744; mini mods ATS-3B -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Don Wilhelm Sent: Thursday, June 25, 2009 5:40 PM To: K2ZLS Cc: ELECRAFT@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Difficulty with K3 Utility RS232 Interface Tony, While it may appear to be so on the surface, the K3 Utility and the .. ask the others in the Field Test or Development Teams and they should also verify that. [Elecraft] Elecraft Diversity Receive... changed the subject matter to this topic.
Ditto the diversity receive. I use stereo speakers on the line output of my K3 into Creative Labs triple tweeters per channel and a central subwoofer. I use a third speaker out of the speaker output in mono mode which is a combination of the stereo channels. I use two 75 meter dipoles, one 25 feet above the other and they are not in the identical plan or side slopes. Incredible receiving experience. Not cheap but I cannot believe my ears. What a difference. My whole desk is filled with sound... about 4 foot of it. Diversity is incredible. I run an ALS 600s amp and I can work what I can hear. Even the guys running 100 watts or less at distance. This setup extends my effective range with more than just QRO operators. This is also a benefit of the fine Elecraft engineering. I don't even work for these guys and they are effectively tapping into my life savings! :-) This is a sweet setup, the best in my hamming experience from 1960 and I have had experiences which were quite a step up in technology. Or, from a computer, by sending a "PS0" command, then waiting at least half a second later dropping the /POWER_ON line. You can turn the rig off at the power supply if that is unavoidable. Just as with a "brownout," when the firmware senses a supply voltage dip to 9.5 V or lower, it shuts down everything as cleanly as possible. But it may not have time to update all changed parameters in EEPROM (current VFO frequencies, etc.). Thus when you turn power back on, you might find the VFO in the last location you were at when you switched to the current band. I once tried turning my K3 off with at power supply several dozen times to see if I could make anything bad happen. Nothing did. That said, do use the preferred method if you can. 73, Wayne N6KR On Jun 7, 2009, at 11:03 AM, Geoffrey Mackenzie-Kennedy wrote: > Joe, > > Many thanks for your help. > > I had been toying with the idea of buying a K3 for use at another QTH, > but there the mains supply is not 100% reliable.
