[Elecraft] K3 Field Day
Just my $0.02. On one of the two K3's we had at FD (NR3X), we used an 80M dipole fed with 450 ohm ladder line. Operators could not believe that I terminated the ladder line into a 4:1 balun, then directly into the K3 (KAT3). Using the internal tuner, the antenna became a multi-bander without a glitch. This particular rig was used on all bands except 40M CW, in which another K3 was used. Gotta love it. [Elecraft] k2 transmitt problem
Hello all, I have finally gotten to the final stretch of construction and have hit another snag. I had gotten the power out on all bands correct and was starting to align the filters when the VFO went out. I reworked the solder joints looking suspect on all 3 boards with no good results. I did discover the encoder had gone bad. I replaced it, aligned the filters using Spectrogram and then discovered I had NO power output on any bands! I get a HIGH CURRENT warning then .4-.5 on the display when tuning. Following the page 17 rf board vdc voltage chart all went well until I got to Q18 and Q19. Q18 G voltage rated -1.0= actual -.001 S was OK=D rated 6.3= actual 8.3. Q19 G rated 0.0= actual -.4==S rated 0.8=actual 1.7==D was ok at 8.0 vdc. Q20 checked out ok. Here I stopped and asking for suggestions. Thanks in advance. Dan af4lb NOTE==Q5 needed to be checked with the bottom cover off in transmit so I did not do it. Didn't want to risk frying the finals again. I do have 13.4 vdc on the case in transmit and receive. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] K2 transmitter problem
Hello all. I have gotten my K2 assembled and stated aligning the filters using Spectogram and the VFO stopped working. I reworked any suspicious solder joints to no avail. I discovered with the help of a friend with a scope that the encoder had failed. I replaced the encoder and discovered I have no power out on any band at all. I get HIGH CURRENT every time I hit tune and only .4 watts out on the meter. I ran a ground check on Q19 and the results are G= 96.7 K ohms, S=240.8 ohms, and D=276.2 ohms. I reworked the solder on R20 and RFC14 with no effect. Re: [Elecraft] K3DVR vs CW Memories
Yep, I use this exclusive. Works great, lasts a long time. Only issue is that the ESC button does not stop the audio transmission, but I "fix" that problem by re-mapping an unused contesting key to emulate a "REC" button press (the button in the center of the memory keys which stops playback). The re-mapped key I use (on my keyboard) is the tilde (~) key immediately below the ESC key. Took no time to get used to. And, as already mentioned, the audio is outstanding. Re: [Elecraft] Product Suggestion Big Box K3
Me too, I sold my K3, and my next transceiver purchase will definitely be a big box with a built-in bandscope, better audio, and with more dedicated controls (not as many multi-use buttons). It would be great if Elecraft would offer such a product. With their fantastic customer service, I think Elecraftwould attract many (if not most) Icom and Yaesu customers who would prefer an American alternative, if only they would address the market differently. Having the best performance and specifications from a technical standpoint is obviously a big plus, but for many hams, there is more to enjoying a radio than technical performance alone. Also, I may be wrong, but I don't think portability is a major issue for most hams. I know than many hams think that the K3 is nearly perfect just the way it is. My opinion is that a slightly larger radio with better ergonomics, an updated display, and better audio would not diminish the appeal of this magnificent radio, but would enhance it; and would reward Elecraft with an excellent market share. Of the things I thought I'd dislike the most about the K3, it was its size. Having been a big box user for so many years, I thought I'd never adapt. Eat those words. The thing I DO like most about the K3 is its size. It freed up so much real estate that my shack became much more ergonomic than prior renderings. RE: [Elecraft] K3 - modes and band/freq
Just change the frequency first, and then set the desired mode. The radio (whatever it's make or logic) will do what the programmer (operator) wants. Dan / WG4S / K2 #2456 Kenwood protocol predates the per-band memories that modern radios have, I.e the radio saves the mode and frequency you were last on, on each band. If you send a mode, does the radio then have to wait X milliseconds before acting on it to see if there is a frequency change coming next that also will change the band ? How long should the radio wait? How long should X be? Kenwood have never defined it any place.. Problem with this is that doing it this way slows down considerably the speed at which the radio can respond to commands, not a good thing if the application is doing more than simple logging or QSying. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] Antenna works too well - I'm worried!
Hi, Dave-- Ann Arbor here. Last summer, I also built a 66' doublet, but used twisted pair for the feedline. Connected the twisted pair directly to my KX1 with an internal antenna tuner. I didn't' work UT, but I did have solid contacts with VT, OK, and MD stations. It seems to work a lot better than the random-wire antenna (28' vertical radiator, three radials) described in the antenna tuner manual. Last time I went portable with it, I built a 66-ft. doublet fed with twisted pair and strung it up between two tree limbs about 15 feet high. This antenna tuned up easily and worked really great. My simplistic theory is that the more wire you can get into the air, the better an antenna will work. [Elecraft] Problems with Top Ten Decoder?
I'm having an odd problem with two brand new Top Ten decoders and two different K3's. In each case, the decoder is having problems pulling up the band data lines coming in from the K3. All four band data lines measure at 5 volts without the K3 connected (thanks to the decoder's pull-up resistors), but only between 1.6 and 2.1 volts with the K3 connected (on lines that should be "on" - lines that should be "off" read zero volts). Turns out that isn't a high enough voltage for the decoder chip to read properly, so the band decoder doesn't work. I strongly suspect operator error, but can't figure out what I am doing wrong. Hints? ***dan, K6IF ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. [Elecraft] Two K3's, Same Band, Same Time?
For Sweepstakes, we are thinking about using a large multi-multi contesting station to house two separate single operator efforts. The station has two yagi antennas on each band, separated by about 500 feet, and element tip to element tip when beaming the US (antennas pointed in parallel). The thought has crossed my mind that two K3's in such a situation might be able to deal with the other signal, even strong and so close, if one station is at the low end of the band (say 14005) and the other is at the high end of the band (say 14075). Would anyone care to weigh in about the likelihood of the receivers surviving such behavior? ***dan, K6IF ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] K3: No measurable voltage on band data lines?
I'm still trying to debug my problem with the Top Ten band decoders and my K3 (s). When I put a volt meter on the band data output pins of the K3's ACC connector, I don't see any positive voltage (all the pins read zero). When I connect the ACC pins to the Top Ten decoder via an appropriate cable (thus bringing the decoders pull-up resistors into the picture), I see a non-zero voltage on the "high" pins, but only between 1.6 and 2.2 volts - not 5 volts. Without the connection to the K3 in place, the same pins measure 5 volt (due to the pull-ups). Is this normal - in particular, is it normal not to be able to measure a positive voltage on the "high" pins of the ACC connector with nothing other than the meter attached? I realize that these are "open collector", but I would have expected to read some positive voltage. ***dan, K6IF ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] K3 (RX) Handling of Key Clicks
As a die hard CW operator, it's difficult to imagine that after 45 years as a ham, I actually worked my first CWSS. Shame on me. I had a blast just S&Ping on and off during the weekend. This was the first active CW contest I've had with the K3. While early on after receiving the K3, I had the opportunity to have it side by side with an FT-2000, after a week of A/B comparisons the FT-2000 was relegated to a different location and disconnected from the operating desk. Since CWSS would be a great radio comparative genre, I returned the FT2K back to the operating desk and next to the K3 - again for A/B comparisons. No need to go into real details, save one, as the K3 is the clear winner. On receive what I really noticed far more than anything else is the K3's handling of key-clicks. Yep, there are plenty of stations with key-clicks, but the K3 AGC handles them SO much better than the Yaesu. It almost appeared I could tell by the clicks who was using a K3 and who wasn't. From a transmit side, several stations who I know were using the K3 had no clicks at all - including some whose signal level approached 30 over. Surely in some receivers, a signal that strong may have clicks generated by the RX itself. Both of these observations attest to the effectiveness, quality, and attention to detail realized by Elecraft. Way to go! Re: [Elecraft] Antenna Analyzer
You all might want to take a look at the Autek Research (www.autekresearch.com) antenna analyzers. The basic model is only $140, while the more full-featured model that can do things like inductance, capacitance, and phase angle measurements is still only $200. Neither has an analog meter, but that hasn't been a big drawback, and the flip side of that is that it's small. It easily fits in the palm of your hand. 73! Re: [Elecraft] Paddle key setup
As you noted, the "standard" way is to make dits with the thumb, and this practice was indeed adopted because that is how bugs worked. If you do it differently, though, so be it. Most new radios now have the ability to switch this via a menu selection, so that even if you do go to Field Day and use someone else's gear, it should be relatively simple to change the setting. 73! It works great---1 to 1 VSWR 160 through 10 meters. However to get a decent VSWR at the low end of 80 Meters, it is necessary to hit the tune button at approximately 3600 Khz then tune down about 6 Khz at a time, hitting the tune button, step by step to get to the low end of the band. Once there I can go to other bands, then come back to the same 80 Meter frequency and still get the 1 to 1 VSWR. If I would hit the tune button say at 3570 Khz, then go back to the low end I would end up with about a 3 to 1 VSWR. It would be necessary to creep it down again. A 4 to 1 balun exhibits the same condition. Adding 20 ft of ladderline made no appreciable difference. Adding 3 ft of coax eliminated the problem, but messed up other bands. I feed the coax to the center coil of the trifilar winding with the ladderline tied to the outer ends of the other windings. This problem was not experienced when I had the balun in the shack, but put it outside to get rid of RF in the shack. So, the tuner is capable of tuning whatever the impedance is at the low end of 80, but for some reason it needs help to get there. You can tune the AT into a dummy load (on ANT2, let's say), and then not tune it to the antenna ever. Then, if you are on ANT1, the tuner will use it's remembered settings for that band and antenna. If you switch to ANT2, the tuner will use it's remembered settings for the band and dummy load (which is the same as bypass for all intents and purposes). Actually, it may BE the same. RE: [Elecraft] Cell Phone Antenna Enhancement?
This may not help, if the signal isn't strong enough, but you can set most phones not to roam. That will restrict it to associating with the correct tower, if that's what you want. I learned this trick in the hospital. I had my cell phone being a CDMA modem for my laptop to get my business back running during a convalescence. The phone would often associate with a Sprint tower, I'd be G3 and good-to-go. Unfortunately, there were some roaming towers with better signals. I was complaining to the nurse about my phone associating with the "wrong" (stronger) tower, and she suggested I turn off roaming. For a 30 year networking professional to need to take networking advice from medical personnel doesn't happen very often, but this time it sure did the trick! hth Dan I know this is way off target - but I figure there may be cell phone RF antenna experts lurking in this forum. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. RE: [Elecraft] ATU in for ANT A, out for ANT B
It CAN be done on the K2. The KAT2 never retunes unless you press the retune button you'd have to tune your remote AT using key down, but that may not be a hardship. I have a straight key wired up all the time anyhow. I use the diodes trick and a stereo "Y" adapter to have the paddles and key always on-line. Not Elegant (sri Eric and Wayne), but certainly functional. Of course, after you accidentally hit tune, tune the remote AT with whatever setting you've got, hit tune again, and you're back in business. Yes, and then you get to buy a bunch of parts for your KIO2! DO NOT CONNECT RS-232 to your KIO2 without opening all unused (by RS-232) pins. ONly Sig Ground, TX and RX go from computer to K2. All other lines on the KIO2 are not RS-232 and can't tolerate the +- 15V the computer will supply. Michael Babineau Replied: No I don't, but probably the easiest way to do this would be to to find a Mac specific Modem Cable (Ebay for $4 US). It will have the correct DIN connector for the Classic Mac serial port and a DB-25 connector at the other end. My guess is that you would just need a DB-25 to DB-9 adaptor to connect the cable up to the K2 (it looks like the KIO2 has a DB-9 on it). The adaptor, I believe, should be straight through as I am assuming that the computer would view the K2 as being DCE, just like a modem. RE: [Elecraft] K2 with MacOS Classic
The diodes are doing two different things. Wire them up! It works great here. In this case, you are using the computer RS-232 to key the rig, so you'll definitely be building a custom cable - TxD and RxD to the K2, DTR to your keying circuit (btw, this can fit into the DB9 shell), and NC all the K2 specific lines. The two diodes on the K2 end are to allow ADET operation (a keyer and a straightkey/computer simultaneously connected). If the DTR line pulls the pair of diodes low, both DIT and DAH go low together and the K2 assumes a straight key. If they go low at different times, the K2 assumes iambic keying and acts appropriately. So ops (up at twice the speed I can run) can fool ADET and need to turn it off. They don't need the diodes but must switch from paddles to SK/Computer with the menu. Other ops only ever do it one way or the other - and switch off ADET too. hth, Dan / WG4S / K2 #2456 -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Bekir Kemal Ataman Sent: Tuesday, November 22, 2005 1:04 PM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: RE: [Elecraft] K2 with MacOS Classic >Yes, and then you get to buy a bunch of parts for your KIO2! > >DO NOT CONNECT RS-232 to your KIO2 without opening all unused (by RS-232) >pins. I am one of those old generation (!) people who do not move a finger without reading the manual first. >;-) Now, as for reading manuals, I have got an interesting case for all of you to comment on. Multimode's Documentation starts by saying the following for transmitting (receiving is via the sound output of the rig): "If you also want to transmit, you'll need to connect the audio output (speaker) jack of your Mac to your radio's microphone input jack. You may need to reduce the audio amplitude using a potentiometer, or attenuating audio cable. Many have sucessfully usd the RigBlaster, made by West Mountain Radio (http://www.westmountainradio.com/)." Then goes onto describe the procedure for PTT and CW: "For transmitting, you may want to be able to control your radio's PTT (Push To Talk) line. A PTT output is generated from the DTR output of the Mac's serial port. A CW key output is generated from the Transmit Data output." The diagram in the Documentation depicts a little circuit on the line from Mac's serial port to the CW Key control (and a smilar one to the PTT) such that: Mac Serial Port --> Diode (1N4148, etc.) --> 2.2k Resistor --> Transistor (2N, etc.) -->PTT The other leg of the Transistor goes to ground. On a diversion from this line, there is a diode (1N4001, etc) which then connects to the first leg of the transistor going to the PTT. [I hope I haven't described it too badly. The diagram is on p4. of MultiModeDocs.pdf. I tried to attach it to this message but the list does not accept attachments.] The documentation describes the way the circuit works as follows: "When the serial port output goes positive, it biases the transistor, so the collector can sink current. The 1N4148 diode protects the transistor when the serial port output is negative. The 1N4001 protects the transistor against flyback from a relay that might be lurking in the radio. A faster diode would probably offer additional protection. The connection on the Mac end would go to the DTR output line. If you'd like to use a similar circuit for CW key control, then it would go to the TxD+ line (or TxD- if you need to invert the logic of the output)." There is no problem as far as this description is concerned. All sounds logical. Looking at things from the K2 side, p. 95 of the manual says that I should have two diodes (one on each line from the dot and dash connections) on the cables going to the computer, when I connect it in parallel to a paddle. And it describes the reason as: "When you connect the keying device in this way, you can continue to use the paddle as usual. But if the external keying device is keyed, both the DOT and DASH lines will be pulled low simultaneously, via the diodes. The K2 firmware interprets this as direct external keying rather than as DOT and DASH triggers." This sounds quite logical, too. However, when you bring the two descriptions together on a single circuit an interesting case occurs. Now, I am not exactly a techie type person and learnt electronics just enough to pass the exam BUT AFAIK having diodes on both ends (i.e. on the computer side as well as the K2 side), each protecting their own respective device, there will not be any current flowing. Am I wrong? Or should I put the circuit together and test it anyway? Thanks for your help in advance. 73! BKA (TA2RX) -- Bekir Kemal Ataman ArchiM

[Elecraft] Noise on received audio
I have K2 s/n 4426 and have been using it for over 1 yr. I built it orginally as the qrp radio with all options except the KIO2. I have also built the K2/100 options and use this only at the home qth and take the battery qrp configuration on travel. I have recently started noticing distorted or "buzzing" riding on type of the audio. This is most audible on CW with strong signals, but I can also her it on SSB voice signals as well. It almost sounds like the person I'm listening to has rf on THEIR signal, though I know this is not the case as EVERY signal has this noise. I hear it most pronounced when using the 100W amp lid, but I can also hear it when using the qrp lid. Here is perhaps a clue to the sourcewhen I lift up the front of the lid on either the 100W lid or qrp lid about 2" high, the noise goes away completely. In fact, if I tilt up the front of the lid, and stick the handle of my screwdriver underneath it to hold it up, the audio is perfect...Could something on the motherboard of the K2 be generating just enough noise to get picked up by the audio sections/speaker wires in the lids of my rig? Rig has SSB, DSP options installed. The noise comes through whether I'm using an external speaker or headphones, it doesn't matter. I do not have a scope to do any snooping, but any ideas that could help me eliminate this noise thru trial and error would be appreciated. The radio is still usable, but this is somewhat irritating and frustrating... Thx 73 K5GUS ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. FW: [Elecraft] K2 with MacOS Classic
Question one: The Rig Control and Info data streams are documented in the KIO2 Programmers Guide (http://www.elecraft.com/manual/KIO2%20Pgmrs%20Ref%20rev%20E.pdf). Example: DTE: Tx data says: fb0001406; (please set VFO B to 14,060 Kcps). DTE: Tx data says: fb;(To what frequency is VFO B set?) DCE: Rx data says: FB0001406; (VFO B is set to 14,060 Kcps). DTE: Tx data says: KYcq*cq*cq*de*wg4s*wg4s*wg4s*k; (D-oh! - BUT - the last WG4S and K will not be sent - short buffer) 1 2 123456789012345678901234 DCE: Rx data says: KY0; (Buffer not full) DTE: Tx data says: KY4s*k; (send the rest of the message). Anyhow, download the pdf, hook up a dumb-terminal (local echo and local linefeed) and play with your radio to get the hang of the protocol. Most of the fun will be in handshaking, as some commands are very fast and some aren't (usually involving relays or the ATU). Question two: If you build the KIO2, you also build the cable, and it's OK. If you use a different cable, you must assure by some other means that the pins used for AUXBUX, ALC, etc., are not passed through to the DTE (computer). The choice of a DB9 may have been inopportune, and some users have keyed their jacks only to take proper plugs (slot the shell or break off/stuff a pin). Yes, it's easy to make a mistake, but I wouldn't call it a design flaw. If you plug your K2 DC-In to the 120VAC wall, something might fry too. DB25 is often a modem, but probably more often a Centronics printer. IDE cables will go in with pin 1 towards the Power receptacle as easily as away from it. If you put your finger in the spark plug wire from your car while it's running, it hurts (your finger - not the car). The KIO2 pins are chosen as the signals needed in "outside" boxes - KAT100, KPA100, KRCn - NOT as RS-232 defined signals. Question three: YES! Dan / WG4S / K2 #2456 >>>>>> Sent: Monday, November 28, 2005 3:05 PM If the RS-232 is only using GND and TX/RX (cw switching), how does it get rig control info from software like DXLab and HamRadioDeluxe? I've heard you could fry the K2 RS232 board by using the wrong serial cable - which I think is a design flaw as these cables (null modem vs straight through) are not marked differently so it's easy to make a mistake. Should I open the cable I'm going to use up and make sure only three pins are connected? thanks and 73, Paul >DO NOT CONNECT RS-232 to your KIO2 without opening all unused (by RS-232) >pins. RE: [Elecraft] KAT 2
"So can anyone see what I'm doing wrong" To connect a WM-2 in circuit with the KAT2, you'd need to open the case and measure the power between the RF board and the KAT2 board. This is simply not necessary. Use the power measurement capability of the KAT2. If the load is very close to 50 ohm resistive, you can hook it up the way you imply you've got it, and get reasonable measurements. You say "the SWR is pegged". I don't know what that means. The KAT2 will show various SWR ratios (not forward and/or reverse power) while in AUTO mode, so you may be discussing some function/feature of the WM-2. How does the KAT2 seem to work with the WM-2 out of the circuit? Yes, ANT1 is indicated by an extinguished ANT2 enunciator. "And explain it to me so I can understand it" Power meters, such as the WM-2, expect to see 50 ohm loads. If you have a different load, the power meter will display wildly different values. A transmatch, antenna tuner, conjugate match, or whatever you call it will show 50 ohms on the input (if adjusted correctly) and whatever the feedline presents on the output. The only way to get a meaningful power measurement is in the input, 50 ohm, side. Of course, this won't take into account any inefficiencies in the tuner. To do that, you'd need to analyze the impedance at the feedline, measure the RMS voltage at that point, and do some arithmetic WAY over my head. I'd suggest going with "Don't ask, don't tell" - say what the K2 says. Dan / WG4S / K2 #2456 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. RE: [Elecraft] Power Supply Question
By scanner, I meant an image scanner to scan the schematic. Since you don't have a schematic, you don't need to scan it. I've never seen a battery with recent use show 0 volts unless it's connected to something. If you disconnect it, it should show at least a few tenths of a volt. 0v on the P/S could be a fuse or breaker, but without a schematic it's going to be tough to troubleshoot by email. Some of the obvious things to check would be continuity from the leads to the circuit board, and wall voltage to a transformer, and inspect anthing that looks like a protection device to see no voltage drop across it. There may be something obvious, like a burnt part. If the battery really failed shorted, then turning on the PS should have popped a fuse, maybe even in your wiring from the PS to the load! Good luck. The schematic would really help. Google may help you find one. When the PSU was switched off it blew the DC fuse on the output of the PSU. The reason is the battery is capable of feeding enough power back into the PSU to exceed the current rating and rupture the output fuse which normally protects the PSU. The solution in our case was to fit a relay on the PSU DC output with it's coil powered from the AC supply. When the AC supply fails, the DC output link is cut off from the PSU. Not all PSU suffer this problem as we never had a problem with the 2m repeater with floating a large gel cell across that, but yours apparently did! RE: [Elecraft] FW: K2/100 SWR accuracy
Be sure you are talking Apples and Apples here. There may be an Orange in the mix! The responses you've gotten for calabrating your SWR to match the external meters are assuming you are putting your tuner in bypass mode. You didn't say that, and may not be doing so. What you said was "press[] TUNE". The K2 SWR meter will normally read the SWR between the Radio and the Tuner. Your external meters will read the SWR between the Tuner and the Antenna. RE: [Elecraft] Polar Bear #1 Needs Help!
Using the camera's digital to analog curcuitry will work, if quality and editing are not factors. Usually, one buys a firewire card (or has firewire built in to the computer), and downloads the video as a digital file (Huge, about 15G/hour) to the workstation. Then, all the NLE (Non Linear Editing) is done, transitions and words are added, and a sound track massaged/added. When the final product is ready, only then will you go to analog for display. If the final media is digital (EG Email, CD, DVD-Rom), the movie can stay digital. Only going to VCR or a TV Monitor would you ever need to convert it to an analog signal. There are quality issues only. Dan Oh yes, Firewire is just another networking tool. Parallel, Ethernet, Serial, USB, Firewire. They all do the same thing, but at different speeds. Firewire is slang for IEEE 1394 and runs about 400 Mbps. It used to be 4 times the speed of Ethernet. Now, with Gigabit Ether, it's 0.4 times the speed. What's the term firewire mean? I keep seeing this word when referring to video. Do you think that if I record from my camcorder into an external dvd recorder it will work? I plan to just go out and buy a dvd recorder and input the video and sound onto a dvd from my camcorder. Then buy a software package for WinXP to edit the dvd. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. [Elecraft] Stupid? Top this!
When I was about 12 years old (1958/1959), printed circuit boards were exotic technology that was unavailable in kits. I wanted badly to handle one, and learn how they are made. A magazine (I believe it was Popular Electronics) ran an article on a 40 meter, transistorized QRP transmitter. I took the schematic, and (to the best of my abilities at that time) drew out a printed circuit board mask by hand. As there was no electronic supply stores in the area (South Carolina) at that time, I saved up my pennies and ordered a blank printed circuit board and an etching kit. I realized that this was going to be a one-shot deal. When the kit arrived, I carefully masked off the board with the included black tape, and little black dots. I then carried the board and etching kit into the kitchen, showed my mother what I was doing, and asked her if she had a shallow container that I could put the board in and then pour in the etching solution. She said that she had just the thing, and produced an *aluminum* pie pan that she had saved from a Morton, frozen, cherry pie. Yes, you see where this is going. I put the circuit board in the pie pan, poured in my bottle of etching solution, and was amazed to see the pie pan erupt into a foaming, black mass. I grabbed the edges of the pie pan, and ran for the (stainless) kitchen sink. Just (and I do mean just) as I got to the sink, the bottom came out of the pie pan, and all of my etching solution went quickly down the drain! It's funny now, and it was probably funny at the time, but I don't believe I thought so then! The board sat around the ham shack for years, and I would look at it (with all the acid resist tape still on it) from time to time. It was kind of like hitting yourself over the head, but without the pain. The rest of the story? I etched my *second* printed circuit board just a few years ago, and (believe me) I used a glass container. That worked better!
