Open Relay Help

2003-05-30 Thread Taylor, Skip
Apparently my mail server has been listed as an Open Relay at
http://njabl.org/.

I've followed the instructions listed in the following FAQ, and still get
listed as an open relay.

3.73 Q: How can I configure my Exchange server so it can't be used as an
open relay?
A: http://www.exchangeadmin.com/Articles/Index.cfm?ArticleID=7696

My server is as follows:
Windows 2000 SP2
Exchange 5.5 SP4
Trend Micro's ScanMail and EManager are installed and current on version and
pattern files.

I have been unsuccessful in finding and searching the archives. Any help
would be greatly appreciated.

The real story with Secondary MX

2003-05-30 Thread Mike Anderson
Hello,

This is still a mystery to me. Could somebody explain, or point me in
the right direction, as to how this all REALLY works? And also, to make
sure things are configured correctly (on the secondary server)?

What is the overall process, on how mail gets routed - and the criteria
that has to be met, before a Primary mail server is given up on, and
then gets sent to the secondary server?

Obviously, it all begins with DNS - you have preferences using numbers.
The lower the number, the higher the priority the Mail Server is. So,
the first MX gets a setting like '10', and the secondary MX gets a
setting like '20'.

Once that is done - what really happens, if in fact, the primary server
is unreachable? Does the secondary Mail Server actually need to have
all the User Accounts and Domains that the first server has in order to
accept messages? OR, does it accept literally everything, and then
spools the mail, once the Primary Mail Server is reachable again. And
that leads me to the next question - how does the secondary Server know
that it just accepted mails (temporarily) for a primary server, and that
it's supposed to periodically contact the Primary - so it can offload
all the mail it's been accumulating this whole time?

If somebody could explain the whole process, or refer me to an article
of some type, I would be very grateful.

Thanks in advance,

Mike

RE: The real story with Secondary MX

2003-05-30 Thread Public Folder: Exchange

Generally you use a SMTP relay on another system as a secondary. This
usually is just a relay that accepts ALL mail for a particular domain.
It usually has no knowledge of user accounts.

Normally, mail is attempted to be delivered to the primary MX, if it's
not available, the next lower priority one is tried and so on down the
list.

If the secondary receives mail, it tries at specified intervals to relay
the mail to the server/ip that it is set up to send that mail to
(usually the primary MX) or it can use DNS.

RE: Unknown User problems (help!)

2003-05-30 Thread Blunt, James H (Jim)
Well Mike,

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but both of the recipient organizations
are on the FiveTen RBL.

Checked both glencap.com and versaggi.com against www.SamSpade.org.

So if your servers are checking the destination address against RBL's before
sending, would you get an error similiar to that? I don't know.

Hi Ed,

The first thing I checked was Reverse DNS - it's absolutely perfect - I even
checked it using remote systems - and DNS verifiers. Rock and Roll. As far
as Black Lists - I will check ORBS and a couple others - but this is a
Capital Management company - nothing but first class people (and business
practices) and they never did a mass mail in their lives - so I just can't
fathom them being on any type of list. Ok - just checked it - they are on
NO blacklists.

It's possible they are lumping this particular error message with all the
other crap they are throwing at us - saying, that it's happening more than
once. I *know* the unknown user error is happening often - and that's my #1
concern right now. I really don't feel that the other problem mentioned
above is happening often at all. Today is the first I heard of that
particular one.

Now regarding the NDR (for the Unknown User error) - here it is:

Please post the entire NDR.

In response to the second question, it appears that your server is being
rejected. Two reasons this might occur is that you don't have a valid
reverse DNS (PTR) entry, or you are on one or more realtime blackhole lists
(RBLs).

Hello,

Ever since we moved our business to another building down the road, and
switched ISP's (with a new block of IP's), our Exchange Server has been
acting up.

We didn't have to change hardly anything after moving - except some IP
addresses on the ISA Firewall Server's external interface, and some DNS
settings on the Exchange Server (for outgoing mail DNS resolution).

>From time to time, external users that are sending e-mail to users on the
Exchange Box, are getting "Unknown User" error messages. This has NEVER
happened before - and am desperately trying to figure out, how changing
ISP's, can cause all these problems. How the heck could a remote system,
get as far as opening a connection all the way to the Exchange Box, and once
authenticated etc., it's unable to find a particular user on the system -
when they are there plain as day??? This server has never hiccupped a single
time before the move -

Also, (here is another good one), on AOL and similar systems, from time to
time, users that had no problem before the move, could send mail to
particular users with no problems, are NOW they are getting similar error
messages:

> The following recipient(s) could not be reached:
> [EMAIL PROTECTED] on 5/28/2003 4:37 PM
> The e-mail account does not exist at the organization this
> message was sent to. Check the e-mail address, or contact the
  > recipient directly to find out the correct address.
> < rly-xg03.mx.aol.com #5.1.1 SMTP; 550 geomarxxx IS NOT ACCEPTING
MAIL FROM THIS SENDER >

Does anybody have ANY ideas as to what is going on here?

Our client is really getting irritated - and I have been working day and
night, making sure DNS is setup right, our Reverse DNS is setup right (with
our new IP's), just anything else that I thought of...

Thanks in advance for any information offered,

Mike

RE: The real story with Secondary MX

2003-05-30 Thread Dickenson, Steven
Well, I've only used this setup in the *nix world. However, this is how it
tends to work.

The sending SMTP server does an MX lookup on the e-mail destination domain,
and grabs the address of the lowest numbered MX.

It attempts to make an SMTP connection to that server. If it fails, it will
then do another MX lookup, this time grabbing the next lowest numbered MX.
Some mail servers will grab all MX records during the first lookup. Some
mail servers will also attempt to use the secondary MX if it encounters an
error during the SMTP session with the primary MX. I have no idea what
Exchange would do in this case.

When the secondary MX receives a message, it will automatically attempt to
forward it to the primary MX (determined via DNS), unless told to do
otherwise (usually via manual routes). The secondary MX will keep trying to
contact the primary MX for a set amount of time. If it times out, it should
return an NDR to the sending SMTP server.

RE: The real story with Secondary MX

2003-05-30 Thread Chris Scharff
Secondary Mx records is one of the services we provide to our customers,
so I've been through this a lot. :) The typical secondary Mx record
falls into one of the two following categories:

1. A secondary entrance into your existing mail network. Offices in NY
and LA, an Mx record which points to each with one being the higher
preference. In the event one link is unavailable mail is routed to the
other and then dispersed throughout the network

2. More commonly, it is a store and forward server which has been
configured to accept mail for foo.com and either uses DNS to try and
forward that mail to the higher preference Mx record or has been
specifically configured to forward all mail for foo.com to a specific

Subject: The real story with Secondary MX

Mike

I have been unsuccessful in finding and searching the archives. Any

Great - thanks for the info.

Another question - how does the Secondary server KNOW that it's a

I don't want to go overkill and setup another Exchange box, to simply
accept messages. I was thinking about using IMail or something much

It doesn't.

You can simply use the Windows 2000 SMTP service for this task. Just be
sure to set it up correctly so it only accepts mail for the required
domain(s) and isn't an open relay.

You have to set it up to accept mail (aka be a relay for) the primary e-mail
domain. It doesn't know it's a secondary MX, per sea, it just knows that

If you don't want to setup another Exchange box, try setting up a *nix box.
That way you can do spam scanning on the cheap when accepting the mail. I
use a Linux box with Exim, SpamAssassin, and SA-Exim to do just this.

RE: The real story with Secondary MX

2003-05-30 Thread Paul Hutchings
Basically you tell it, not trying to sound funny there, but I guess
different MTAs are told in different ways..

As an example I use postfix as our inbound gateway, if I wanted to set it up
as a secondary MX for domain.com I'd basically tell it where to route mail
to domain.com to, and that would pretty much be that barring some tweaking.

Just a personal opinion but I'd be tempted to use a third party for a
secondary MX - the one I use is dirt cheap and deadly reliable so I'd sooner
not worry about another box to look after..

RE: The real story with Secondary MX

2003-05-30 Thread Roger Seielstad
It all depends on how you want to configure your relays.

The default for sendmail implementations is that mail needs to be delivered
to the lowest preference server. If a server with a higher preference
accepts the mail, it will spool it and attempt delivery to that lowest
preference mail server.

In the case of Exchange, you can easily have 2 IMS's with staggered MX
preferences. In this case, either IMS will accept mail and route it
internally (assuming full directory replication).

If you look at the MX records for my company, you'll see that there are 4
MX's listed with increasing preferences. All 4 of those servers will accept
mail and then forward it through our firewalls to internal relays which
deliver the mail to Exchange.

RE: Open Relay Help

2003-05-30 Thread Paul Hutchings
I think the "Hosts and clients connecting to these internal addresses" is
your problem - you don't need it ticked (or I should say it isn't ticked
here and doesn't affect inbound email).

I'd bet money that's your problem. I had my Exchange server setup like this
at one point, for a Mac client with an old version of Eudora that didn't
support SMTP AUTH. It turned Exchange into an open relay. Removing the IP
address, but leaving the box checked, solved my problem.

If you've not already done so check your outbound queue - you don't want to

I think the "Hosts and clients connecting to these internal addresses" is
your problem - you don't need it ticked (or I should say it isn't ticked
here and doesn't affect inbound email).

RE: Unknown User problems (help!)

2003-05-30 Thread Mike Anderson
Hmmm okay.

Actually, versaggi.com - is the address of my partner - in which we are
the consultants working on this project. The originator of the messages
(that was having problems sending to glencap.com) was just forwarding
the information to my friend @ versaggi.com to show him the errors he
was getting.

I checked dnsstuff.com - to check for the blacklists - and it came back
(almost) squeaky clean. Also, they are using XO Communications as their
ISP (which I am not happy with) - and I know that TONS of their IP
blocks, and clients, are on Spam lists up the Wazoo.

I just hope glencap.com isn't being lumped in, with some other Spammers.
That would stink. Also (much to my dismay), when we moved facilities
(and ISP's), we didn't get a full Class C this time - which stinks.
Because some companies / Spam lists, will simply block an entire Class C
- and not go the extra mile, to figure out which SUBNET the Spammer came
from - so they end up blocking TONS of other legit companies that are on
that Class C. All this crap started when we lost our Class C, and moved
to XO - with our chopped up Class C.

Well, moving on - that still doesn't answer the question of the "Unknown
User" - because if they are doing Spam checking, before the message gets
sent, wouldn't it intercept it before it could make to the destination
server? If that's the case, the 550 message should never get an
opportunity to present itself. This is happening, once the glencap.com
mail server is contacted, and a connection attempt with a particular
user is being made.

I am really stumped on this -

Thanks for the info though,

Mike

Well Mike,

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but both of the recipient
organizations are on the FiveTen RBL.

Checked both glencap.com and versaggi.com against www.SamSpade.org.

So if your servers are checking the destination address against RBL's
before sending, would you get an error similiar to that? I don't know.

Hi Ed,

The first thing I checked was Reverse DNS - it's absolutely perfect - I
even checked it using remote systems - and DNS verifiers. Rock and
Roll. As far as Black Lists - I will check ORBS and a couple others -
but this is a Capital Management company - nothing but first class
people (and business
practices) and they never did a mass mail in their lives - so I just
can't fathom them being on any type of list. Ok - just checked it -
they are on NO blacklists.

It's possible they are lumping this particular error message with all
the other crap they are throwing at us - saying, that it's happening
more than once. I *know* the unknown user error is happening often -
and that's my #1 concern right now. I really don't feel that the other
problem mentioned above is happening often at all. Today is the first I
heard of that particular one.

Now regarding the NDR (for the Unknown User error) - here it is:

Please post the entire NDR.

In response to the second question, it appears that your server is being
rejected. Two reasons this might occur is that you don't have a valid
reverse DNS (PTR) entry, or you are on one or more realtime blackhole
lists (RBLs).

Nope, rejects relay attempts using sam spade.

If you've not already done so check your outbound queue - you don't want to
find there's 10,000 spams in there :-)

The new "free" MMS only comes with the enterprise version of Windows
2003 server. It does not come with standard. I guess it must need saucer

Not directly. You could use MMS or simplesync or your own scripts. You
might be able to set up a standalone 5.5 environment in the middle and
have an ADC on each side sync through that. Sounds like a pain in the
neck to me though.

It it possible to synchronize 2 separate E2K GAL's using the ADC? It

RE: Open Relay Help

2003-05-30 Thread Paul Hutchings
If it's originator is <> they're NDRs and the likes - they can be safely
deleted.

You might want to keep an eye on http://www.openrbl.org to make sure you
don't creep onto more DNSBLs as people receive stuff that may have been sent
through your server and report it to Spamcop and the likes.

Some lists you'll be able to get removed from, some you're stuck on simply
for being with QWest.

Paul

RE: Open Relay Help

2003-05-30 Thread Randal, Phil
On the subject of emails from "<>", RFC2821 says your mailer must
accept them. It neededn't do anything with them, though.

There's a surprisingly large number of misconfigured mailers
which bounce them, alas.

RE: Open Relay Help

2003-05-30 Thread Paul Hutchings
It looks like a bunch of Qwest IPs are on blacklists because of Qwests
alleged unwillinglness to terminate spammers using their network - I don't
really know the specifics, but I suspect if you go to
http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=qwest+group%3A
news.admin.net-abuse.* you'll get an idea.

Main thing is get of any lists you're on because you were an open relay,
short of changing IPs or ISPs you can't do much about the others.

Paul

Ok, so I know that pst = bad.
What can I use for archiving purposes then? I have had a look around but I
am totally budget constrained so I imagine that something like EAS
(http://www.exchangearchivesolution.com/) is out the question as I bet it
costs £££ - similarly commvault et al.
Does anyone know of a low cost solution if users want to save email? I am
currently researching Microsoft Exchange Server Archiving Agent (EAA) Has
anyone used this? Any good? Reading
http://www.exchangeadmin.com/Articles/Index.cfm?ArticleID=7920&pg=1&show=640
makes me think that this isn't really what I'm after which is some way of
users keeping messages in their mailboxes or some other central repository
without going over their limit. Disk space is a problem at the moment and I
have no money to spend. Anyone got any ideas? Or do I just tell the users
to like it or lump it?

I don't know if this is Acceptable Practice but could be a work around.
Copy the emails to a directory on a file server or local drive as a .msg file. At this time you can keep them there or burn them to a CD.

Scripted shutdown of Ex2k

2003-05-30 Thread Aaron Greer
I've been asked to come up with a script that will allow others (on our
general networking team) to gracefully shut down one of our Exchange
servers. I'm figuring that a straightforward series of NET STOP commands
should take care of it, but am concerned about the time it'll take to
shut down the IS (for instance, if net stop times out and gives up
before a large IS finishes shutting down). Do any of you all have any
pointers or caveats? Is there any way in a simple batch script to check
to see if a service has finished shutting down?

Thanks,
Aaron

RE: Open Relay Help

2003-05-30 Thread Dickenson, Steven
Agreed. It drives me nuts, as I do sender address verification using null
senders. It's okay to reject null senders for multiple recipients, but not
for just one! I'm also amazed at the number of sites that just ignore
e-mails I send informing them of their RFC violation.

On the subject of emails from "<>", RFC2821 says your mailer must
accept them. It neededn't do anything with them, though.

There's a surprisingly large number of misconfigured mailers
which bounce them, alas.

The new "free" MMS only comes with the enterprise version of Windows

Not directly. You could use MMS or simplesync or your own scripts. You
might be able to set up a standalone 5.5 environment in the middle and
have an ADC on each side sync through that. Sounds like a pain in the
neck to me though.

It it possible to synchronize 2 separate E2K GAL's using the ADC? It

Others have answered your question well, but I feel it worth emphasizing
that MX records only tell *other* mail servers what to do. They usually do
not influence the actual destination servers themselves. Most SMTP
implementations need to be explicitly told to handle mail for a given
domain. Otherwise you get errors like "Relaying denied" or "MX loops back
to me".

The typical algorithm is something like this...

First, the server checks an SMTP envelope's "RCPT TO" command(s). Any
"RCPT TO" commands which specify a domain the server is configured to handle
are accepted for processing. What exactly happens depends on the
configuration, but typically, the message is either delivered locally, or
relayed to a higher priority (lower numbered) MX. High availability systems
may do things like use alternate routes to internal mail storage servers or
things like that.

Any remaining "RCPT TO" commands on the envelope are thus relay attempts.
If the server is well-behaved, it will make sure the sender is authorized to
relay. (This is where the "Relay denied" error mentioned above comes from.)
If the relay is authorized, the server will look up the destination MX, and
forward the message on to that mail exchanger. If a server discovers that
*it* is the best MX, you get errors like "MX loops back to me".

The 'free' MMS also needs SQL and Visual Studio.

The new "free" MMS only comes with the enterprise version of Windows
2003 server. It does not come with standard. I guess it must need saucer
separation for operation

Not directly. You could use MMS or simplesync or your own scripts. You
might be able to set up a standalone 5.5 environment in the middle and
have an ADC on each side sync through that. Sounds like a pain in the
neck to me though.

Hello,

It it possible to synchronize 2 separate E2K GAL's using the ADC? It
does not appear to be and I am finding very little information on it.

Thanks.

Why would a company who sends me so much SPAM sell a product called "SpamSucks!"?
Especially spam trying to sell me a product called "SpamSucks!" And sent with a

Del Items Recovery- Public Folder failure

2003-05-30 Thread MS Exchange List

Hello,

OS: W2K SP3 + Security Hot fixes
E2K SP3 + 03/03 Store Roll-up

Recovering a Public Folder with "Recover Deleted Items" results in the error:

"Outlook was unable to recover some or all of the items in this folder. Make sure you
have the required permissions to recover items in this folder, and try again. If the
problem persists, contact your administrator."

Sadly, I am the Administrator.

This 1 PF is 3 levels down, messages in it, but no sub-folders. The user that deleted
it has Owner rights for the folder it was deleted from and the deleted folder itself.
As do Email Admins. The Owner that deleted it gets the same error I do when they try
to recover it (I turned "dumpster always on" for them).

The behavior is you can see the folder to recover, it lets you start recovery, you can
see the folder appear and messages then start to appear in it (if you're watching from
a different Outlook client), and then right at the end you get the above error and it
vanishes from the PF structure. It is then in "Recover Deleted Items" again and ready
for another try.

What I've done:

-I have tested creating, deleting, and recovering other folders with similar Rights,
(and ones not similar) etc... and all works fine.

-I have run "isinteg -s ... -fix -test alltests" against the PF store.

-I have turned off Virus scanning (Trend Scanmail).

-I've searched Google Groups, and it looks like the last couple months there are a
quite a few Admins in the same boat as me. The only happy endings I found were one
that ran isinteg, and one that just kept trying and trying and finally it worked (feel
the power of Admin).

One thing that comes to mind is that this PF was probably created back in the Exchange
5.5 days and was on a server upgraded in place to E2K.

Any tips?

Thanks,
Brent

Exchange 2000 Contact to fax connector?

Well what I've been asked to look into is if you were to send an outlook
contact who only has a fax number, how can you get exchange server to
transfer the message to MSFAX? If anyone has any tips I'd be grateful,
tahnks.

Well I'm just looking into this right now, but I'm wondering if anyone
here has any resources or any tips as to how I can achieve this.

RE: Exchange 2000 Contact to fax connector?

You will need a 3rd party fax server. GFI Faxmaker is a nice and well priced
system.

Well what I've been asked to look into is if you were to send an outlook
contact who only has a fax number, how can you get exchange server to
transfer the message to MSFAX? If anyone has any tips I'd be grateful,
tahnks.

Well I'm just looking into this right now, but I'm wondering if anyone here
has any resources or any tips as to how I can achieve this.

Remote sites

2003-05-30 Thread Leeann McCallum
I know this is probably a dumb question. In fact, I KNOW this is a dumb
question for a Friday.

I've set up a test nt4, 5.5 environment by doing a couple of restores (both
IS and DS) from 2 sites in our live environment. (Several reasons for this
incl. recovering a few public folders, testing our DR procedures, and
preparing for a 2K upgrade)

Our live environment is actually 5 sites, however I was wondering if it is
possible to somehow remove the 3 sites from the Directory that I don't
intend to restore.

I have tried removing the connectors (x400 and DRC) from the gateway server,
but there is no server in the site to contact to delete.

I'm thinking I need to somehow remove these 3 orphan sites, and perhaps
running admin in raw state, but this is just Friday theorising.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks
Leeann

RE: Del Items Recovery- Public Folder failure

2003-05-30 Thread Dumke, Jane
I've found that when this happens to us (and it has several times), that
there were probably "ghost" permissions on the folder from an account
that has been removed from AD. We've never been successful in
recovering one of those.

Subject: Del Items Recovery- Public Folder failure

Hello,

OS: W2K SP3 + Security Hot fixes
E2K SP3 + 03/03 Store Roll-up

Recovering a Public Folder with "Recover Deleted Items" results in the
error:

"Outlook was unable to recover some or all of the items in this folder.
Make sure you have the required permissions to recover items in this
folder, and try again. If the problem persists, contact your
administrator."

Sadly, I am the Administrator.

This 1 PF is 3 levels down, messages in it, but no sub-folders. The
user that deleted it has Owner rights for the folder it was deleted from
and the deleted folder itself. As do Email Admins. The Owner that
deleted it gets the same error I do when they try to recover it (I
turned "dumpster always on" for them).

The behavior is you can see the folder to recover, it lets you start
recovery, you can see the folder appear and messages then start to
appear in it (if you're watching from a different Outlook client), and
then right at the end you get the above error and it vanishes from the
PF structure. It is then in "Recover Deleted Items" again and ready for
another try.

What I've done:

-I have tested creating, deleting, and recovering other folders with
similar Rights, (and ones not similar) etc... and all works fine.

-I have run "isinteg -s ... -fix -test alltests" against the PF store.

-I have turned off Virus scanning (Trend Scanmail).

-I've searched Google Groups, and it looks like the last couple months
there are a quite a few Admins in the same boat as me. The only happy
endings I found were one that ran isinteg, and one that just kept trying
and trying and finally it worked (feel the power of Admin).

One thing that comes to mind is that this PF was probably created back
in the Exchange 5.5 days and was on a server upgraded in place to E2K.

Any tips?

Thanks,
Brent

Assuming spambelt's target audience is the /dev/nul device on my SMTP
gateway I am pleased to report they have 100% market penetration and a
good rapport with their recipients and have done so for a couple of
years now.

Of course if they think they are actually sending that drivel to real
live actual people here then I guess suddenly things don't look quite so
rosy.

Public Folder Replication Across Routing Groups

2003-05-30 Thread Neil Doody
Hi, to combat a problem I have been having, I have recreated the
configuration within Exchange, and used different routing groups for
different servers to accomplish the same setup as I had previously.

However, since putting the different servers in different routing
groups, public folders are no longer working. The public folders work
at head office where I am, but at remote sites where servers are in a
different routing group, the public folders cannot be accessed and they
say that they probably haven't been replicated.

RE: SpamBelt

2003-05-30 Thread Erik Sojka
Not quite.
I'm merely pointing out the difference here ;)

If Tom's talking about the same message I got today, it was "targeted"
to TechEd attendees, and not to any and every @$$hole who has ever
browsed Sunbelt's website (i.e. their normal "targeted" audience).

Of course, Sunbelt's messages in this case can still be construed as
being vaguely requested (I get a boatload of junk from MEC/TechEd
vendors) - it is assumed that all MEC/TechEd vendors get the list of
attendees.

The question remains why Sunbelt chose this particular message to look
extremely spammy (See Tom's note re: roving.com and juno).

RE: Exchange for macs

2003-05-30 Thread Couch, Nate
You don't need to do anything on the Exchange server.

For the Macintoshes themselves all you need is a hosts file with entries for
the Exchange server(s) and the DNS servers since Macs don't use WINS.

Then on the client side make sure you are not using Appletalk since that is
a chatty service. Set them up for strictly TCPIP.

In your TCPIP control panel make sure they have the DNS servers in their
search list and that should be it.
