Active Directory and Exchange 5.5
Hi, I've been asked to upgrade our Windows NT4 domain to Active Directory. We are currently using Exchange 5.5, and I would hope to move to Exchange 2000 in due course. However, I think upgrading both at the same time may be a bit too much work. Is it possible to continue running Exchange 5.5 with all the users being in AD ? Is the AD connector essential in these circumstances. I played with this scenario in a test environment, and after upgrading the domain, I was still able to access Exchange without installing the AD connector. I was under the impression that AD connector HAD to be used after upgrading. My AD domain name and NT domain names were the same, ie. DOMAINNAME became DOMAINNAME.AD. I'm a bit confused as to the role of the AD connector in this scenario. Thanks, Tony. List Charter and FAQ at: http://www.sunbelt-software.com/exchange_list_charter.htm
RE: Active Directory and Exchange 5.5
Absolutely. I consider the migration a 2 step process anyway. I would want to see a secure, stable Active Directory deployment prior to implementing the migration for Exchange. There are several subprojects really: 1) migrate users from NT to Windows2000 AD. 2) Synchronise Exchange 5.5 directory information with AD. 3) Install and migrate to exchange2000. The Active Directory Connector synchronises directory information between Exchange5.5's Directory Services and the Windows2000 Active Directory through the use of Connection Agreements. There is lots to be read. Exchange 5.5 Upgrade
Title: Exchange 5.5 Upgrade I've got another question. It doesn't look like my new Exchange server is going to ship for another couple of weeks, bummer. However, I did receive the Exchange 5.5 Enterprise media. My question is this: According to Q240152, I just need to run the setup.exe from the Enterprise CD to change the Type attribute to give me an unlimited store. Does anyone have an idea of how long this upgrade might take? I have an approximately 14.5 GB IS, Exchange 5.5 Standard, SP4, Windows NT 4.0, SP6. I just need a guestimate of time to determine when I can schedule an outage to do this. Note on moving Exch 5.5
As we have been discussing, I moved my mail server this past weekend. A note on a blip I experienced: I changed the internal IP on the new server to match the old server's IP (I gave the old one a completely different IP) after moving mailboxes so that I would not have to mess with router settings and such for the NAT. It worked fine, because the DNS was still correct, mail came through, etc. On Monday, when people started Outlook and it looked for the new mail server, some users had issues with the new IP. They were trying to resolve to the old IP. I blew out WINS and it still looked for the old POC. A well meaning coworker added an LMHOSTS entry for the server (GOD NOO). Bad form, but it worked at that moment, which is all users seem to care about. I plan to go back and fix this issue when things settle down. I just wanted to bring this up for posterity's sake. *wink List Charter and FAQ at: http://www.sunbelt-software.com/exchange_list_charter.htm
RE: Public Folder Alerts
The script uses a particular event which only fires if a new item is created in that folder. If using Outlook with the Exchange provider (no IMAP or OWA) you should be able to fire up such a notification if you hook into the change event. Unfortunately I don't have the specific name of the event handy and it's been about two years when I did such 5.5 stuff. But you should be able to find it on MSDN IIRC. OWA password change
We are running Ex5.5 sp4 on W2k sp2 backend and IIS/OWA on W2k sp2 front end. Most of our consultants are never at the office and receive all there mail using OWA. The system is only exposed to the internet on SSL and we have been using the IISADMPWD .htr programs to change passwords every 90 days. With the recent problems with respect to MS02-028 Heap overrun int HTR I am wondering about alternative solutions to enable my users to change there passwords from IIS. NT networks typically will use NetBIOS over TCP/IP for name resolution, i.e. WINS before DNS. Exchange/Outlook Resolution problem
Here is one that will stump even the best of you (although I kind of hope it doesn't). Here is our situation - we have a development 2000 domain with an exchange 2000 server in it, basically all for testing and staging build tests. We are trying to test a blackberry server build from start to finish. One of the things blackberry depends on is using an outlook profile to attach to exchange. The only problem is - we cannot resolve any user we create in AD and generate an email address for. The email address gets generated, it propagates and all is good. However, when trying to attach to that profile (resolve it from the outlook client) it says it cannot resolve. 1) It appears the servers are talking to the GC's. 2) We are able to ping the NetBIOS name. 3) Even directly on the exchange server with a client installed, it gets the same error 4) The first exchange server has been ripped out and reinstalled many times already (my theory is this is the problem) What I am asking is if anyone ever heard of such a problem and what you guys suggest. Thanks!!! List Charter and FAQ at: http://www.sunbelt-software.com/exchange_list_charter.htm

McAfee The final Results.
Well I just got done replacing McAfee VirusScan with Trend OfficeScan on all my desktops, and I thought I would post the results here. Trend found 22 out of 84 computers had a virus on them despite having VirusScan with up to date (4209) data files installed on them. They were all set up to check for new dats automatically. Most had multiple infections, with one even having 6 different viruses on it. 90 percent of the viruses were Outlook based email viruses that somehow got through GroupShield, and VirusScan! I even saw several infections from KLEZ, and supposedly you didn't even have to be up to date on your DAT fields for VirusScan to clean that one. I just thought that this info was worth putting out there for those using or thinking of using VirusScan. RE: McAfee The final Results.
I can't speak for Trend, but I just installed Antigen last night. The installation was relatively painless, the file extensions to block have to be entered manually one by one, the auto update for the sigs works great, their support people so far have been very good, the subject line content filter works well but is very particular, it uses, in my case four different virus engines and it makes me coffee in the morning. OK. So it really doesn't make me coffee. The bad news is I'm having an issue with end users not receiving notifications of virus laden emails. Antigen is catching them and stripping the infected attachments but not notifying the recipients. I need to rename some Antigen .adb files then stop and start all services. Then enter all my file extensions by hand again (by the way, thank you Martin for the list). Guess who's going in real real early tomorrow. RE: .net questions
Funny, just got out of a meeting with MS about .net. I would suggest getting your MS rep out there to the developers and infrastructure groups to see what .net provides for both areas. Your basically looking at XML Web Services that will allow you Rapid Application Development and cross platform communication. There are four parts to .net: Clients, Servers, XML Web Services and Developer tools We just got the developer pitch today (kind of understood what was going on) and will get the infrastructure part later (my area). But .net as far as I can figure is a family of development and server products. Exchange 2000 is one of the .net applications but I don't think Terminal Services really changes much between Win2K and .net servers. Biztalk Server, Share Point Portal Server, Exchange 2000, SQL 2000, etc. are all part of the 12 server products that will be available. RE: .net questions
It sounds like what her group was discussing was the .NET development platform (ASPX, C#, VB.NET, etc). At this time, its easy to confuse the two (dev vs. server). Frankly, I left it up to our developers to decide. All they needed from me was to upgrade the MDAC and install .NET Framework on the servers -Original Message- From: Ken Leyba [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Tuesday, July 02, 2002 5:14 PM To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: RE: .net questions Funny, just got out of a meeting with MS about .net. I'm running 3206 in a test environment and its running okay. Found out the hard way that e2k doesn't work on it, and the RDP5.1 isn't implemented correctly. RE: Active Directory and Exchange 5.5
Tony, without the ADC you do not have synch between the 5.5 database and the AD database. You have to manually go in and add mailboxes to users, and users to mailboxes. Then if you make a change on the AD you have to go into 5.5 and reassign the owner. Stuff like that. Also making new users without the AD wont populate the 55 db, so again you create 50 users in AD, then you create 50 mailboxes, then associate those 50 mailboxes to each user one at a time. Trust me, use the adc :) -Original Message- From: Tony Flannery [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Tuesday, July 02, 2002 7:27 AM To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: Active Directory and Exchange 5.5 Hi, I've been asked to upgrade our Windows NT4 domain to Active Directory. *wink List Charter and FAQ at: http://www.sunbelt-software.com/exchange_list_charter.htm List Charter and FAQ at: http://www.sunbelt-software.com/exchange_list_charter.htm List Charter and FAQ at: http://www.sunbelt-software.com/exchange_list_charter.htm -- The information contained in this email message is privileged and confidential information intended only for the use of the individual or entity to whom it is addressed. Found out the hard way that e2k doesn't work on it and the RDP5.1 isn't implemented correctly. (Cant connect to it via WinXP using rdp5.1). I'd double check your config then. I've been using Win.NET Server since 3604 and am now running 3628 and I never had any issues using Win.XP to connect via RDP to the Win.NET box. oh yah and the new sharepoint on it is much nicer. I assume you refer to Sharepoint Team Services which are removed in later builds. Hey William is that new build on the msdn? I didn't see it .. Nope. Build 3628 (which William I believe refers to) is only for beta testers. RE: .net questions
I thought that's what you meant, I have 3602, but I knew you had the newer one and mine was 06. heeh .. Siegfried - A bunch of us went through this before, and I know some people said there's works, but mine never worked, with or without a domain or AD. I even tried joining the domain from an xp box and then doing it, I got an error every time. Being fairly proficient in RDP TS (manage about 12 servers @ 250 users) I felt I had it all setup correctly just for a basic connection from an admin acct. Oh well, looking forward to the new build.. -Original Message- From: William Lefkovics [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Tuesday, July 02, 2002 9:27 PM To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: RE: .net questions Oops... Don't forget that old NetBIOS node type in DHCP. P-node, M-node .. or whatever it was to tell the dhcp client which order to process requests. List Charter and FAQ at: http://www.sunbelt-software.com/exchange_list_charter.htm
RE: Exchange and Remote Exchange?
Title: Message I don't think it can be done, your best bet would be to backup offsite then and have the ability to restore. Geocluster was a product we were reviewing last year I know Sunbelt uses it, but at the time I don't think it handled exchange. -Original Message-From: Exchange - Sunbelt [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Tuesday, July 02, 2002 10:34 AMTo: MS-Exchange Admin IssuesSubject: Exchange and Remote Exchange? I've gotten conflicting responses from several peers around me and so I want to pose the same question to y'all. I have this idea: We have a network with a e2k server. It is where all the mail comes in/etc...I would like for disaster recovery purposes to connect a vpn to the network. At the other end of this VPN at a remote location would be another server - E2k. I would like the internal server to replicate itself and all messages/etc to the remote server. This could be done in real time or just once in the evenings. Is this possible? I was told it would be like a front end/back end and the remote server would only have 'shortcuts' pointing to the message on the main server. I would not want the remote server to handle incoming user requests due to bandwidth constraints on VPNs (ie perhaps more cost). In case of disaster and the main e2k blows up, I would want the remote server to be ABLE to take over (I realize I would need to setup / route IP etc). =20 List Charter and FAQ at:http://www.sunbelt-software.com/exchange_list_charter.htm List Charter and FAQ at: http://www.sunbelt-software.com/exchange_list_charter.htm
