Dependencies on start up - in E2k

2002-07-02 Thread Newsletter

Hi all,
A newbie to this forum so I apologies if I'm treading on any toes.

We have a fax solution on our E2k SP2 server called FAXMaker which is served by an
external modem for inbound stuff and an ISDN for outbound and it works pretty
wellbut when we have to ever restart the server it is important that the following
services are started in order otherwise things get 'messy'

Fax Service which starts C:\Winnt\system32\faxsvc.exe
FAXmaker FAX Server which starts C:\Program files\FAXmaker\fmservic.exe
FAXmaker Exchange Connector which starts C:\Program files\FAXmaker\fmexgway.exe

Is there a reg hack or similar to get
FAXmaker Exchange Connector to depend on FAXmaker FAX Server and then to be depended
on by Fax Service starting?
Kind regards
Nick

Active Directory and Exchange 5.5

2002-07-02 Thread Tony Flannery

Hi, I've been asked to upgrade our Windows NT4 domain to Active Directory.
We are currently using Exchange 5.5, and I would hope to move to Exchange
2000 in due course. However, I think upgrading both at the same time may
be a bit too much work. Is it possible to continue running Exchange 5.5
with all the users being in AD ? Is the AD connector essential in these
circumstances. I played with this scenario in a test environment, and
after upgrading the domain, I was still able to access Exchange without
installing the AD connector. I was under the impression that AD connector
HAD to be used after upgrading.

My AD domain name and NT domain names were the same, ie. DOMAINNAME became
DOMAINNAME.AD.

I'm a bit confused as to the role of the AD connector in this scenario.

Thanks,

Tony.

RE: Active Directory and Exchange 5.5

2002-07-02 Thread William Lefkovics

Absolutely. I consider the migration a 2 step process anyway. I would
want to see a secure, stable Active Directory deployment prior to
implementing the migration for Exchange.

There are several subprojects really:
1) migrate users from NT to Windows2000 AD.
2) Synchronise Exchange 5.5 directory information with AD.
3) Install and migrate to exchange2000.

The Active Directory Connector synchronises directory information
between Exchange5.5's Directory Services and the Windows2000 Active
Directory through the use of Connection Agreements.

There is lots to be read.

Upgrading Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 to the Windows 2000 Platform

Exchange 5.5 Upgrade

Title: Exchange 5.5 Upgrade

I've got another question. It doesn't look like my new Exchange server is going to ship for another couple of weeks, bummer. However, I did receive the Exchange 5.5 Enterprise media. My question is this: According to Q240152, I just need to run the setup.exe from the Enterprise CD to change the Type attribute to give me an unlimited store. Does anyone have an idea of how long this upgrade might take? I have an approximately 14.5 GB IS, Exchange 5.5 Standard, SP4, Windows NT 4.0, SP6.

I just need a guestimate of time to determine when I can schedule an outage to do this.

Note on moving Exch 5.5

2002-07-02 Thread Matthew Carpenter

As we have been discussing, I moved my mail server this past weekend.

A note on a blip I experienced:

I changed the internal IP on the new server to match the old server's IP (I
gave the old one a completely different IP) after moving mailboxes so that I
would not have to mess with router settings and such for the NAT. It worked
fine, because the DNS was still correct, mail came through, etc.

On Monday, when people started Outlook and it looked for the new mail
server, some users had issues with the new IP. They were trying to resolve
to the old IP. I blew out WINS and it still looked for the old POC. A well
meaning coworker added an LMHOSTS entry for the server (GOD NOO).
Bad form, but it worked at that moment, which is all users seem to care
about.

I plan to go back and fix this issue when things settle down.

I just wanted to bring this up for posterity's sake. *wink

RE: Public Folder Alerts

2002-07-02 Thread Siegfried Weber

The script uses a particular event which only fires if a new item is
created in that folder. If using Outlook with the Exchange provider (no
IMAP or OWA) you should be able to fire up such a notification if you
hook into the change event. Unfortunately I don't have the specific name
of the event handy and it's been about two years when I did such 5.5
stuff. But you should be able to find it on MSDN IIRC.

Hi guys,

I've got an add-in program that removes duplicates from a folder. Only
problem is that Outlook 2000 (SR2) only gives me the options of allowing
this program access to the folder for one minute, two minutes, 5 minutes or
10 minutes. I would like to set this thing to run overnight, so I'd like,
maybe, a 10 hour option? Is there any way of changing the value of these
options? I checked the registry and the MSKB, but didn't find anything off
the bat.

Thanks,

Evan

Well I found something. There was still a DNS entry for the old IP address.
I originally intended to make it separate and make it mail2 or something
similar in DNS. I removed the entry and it has cleared most of my problems.

*wink

I think it's going to depend on how the WS is configured, particularly that

OWA password change

Windows NT networks will try querying an DNS server before trying WINS, by default. See MS article Q172218, for further explanation.

Subject: Note on moving Exch 5.5

*wink

RE: Note on moving Exch 5.5

2002-07-02 Thread Andy David

NT networks typically will use NetBIOS over TCP/IP for name resolution, i.e.
WINS before DNS. That article refers to host name resolution (Hosts, DNS
etc... before WINS) which *Outlook* as well as other applications will use
to resolve.

Matthew,
Windows NT networks will try querying an DNS server before trying
WINS, by default. See MS article Q172218, for further explanation.

Can anyone elaborate on how that works on an NT 4 domain? WINS is correct
and a conflicting DNS entry is there? Why does DNS take precedence on an NT4

domain? I thought that was a 2K thing??? (I am sending this to the NT list

Exchange/Outlook Resolution problem

2002-07-02 Thread Steve Balen

Here is one that will stump even the best of you (although I kind of hope it
doesn't).

Here is our situation - we have a development 2000 domain with an exchange
2000 server in it, basically all for testing and staging build tests. We are
trying to test a blackberry server build from start to finish. One of the things
blackberry depends on is using an outlook profile to attach to exchange. The
only problem is - we cannot resolve any user we create in AD and generate an
email address for. The email address gets generated, it propagates and all is
good. However, when trying to attach to that profile (resolve it from the
outlook client) it says it cannot resolve.

1) It appears the servers are talking to the GC's.
2) We are able to ping the NetBIOS name.
3) Even directly on the exchange server with a client installed, it gets the
same error
4) The first exchange server has been ripped out and reinstalled many times
already (my theory is this is the problem)

What I am asking is if anyone ever heard of such a problem and what you guys
suggest. Thanks!!!

2002-07-02 Thread Clyde Burns

Once you had your exchange 2000 server installed in your dev domain did you
ever reboot your global catalog server(s)? I had some very similar issues
until I figured out that the NSPI addition to the global catalog servers
required a reboot. Technet article q256976 was helpful to me (describes how
mapi clients access AD)

Here is one that will stump even the best of you (although I
 kind of
 hope it
 doesn't).

Here is our situation - we have a development 2000 domain
 with an
 exchange
2000 server in it, basically all for testing and staging
 build
 tests. We are
trying to test a blackberry server build from start to
 finish. One
 of the things
blackberry depends on is using an outlook profile to attach
 to
 exchange. The
only problem is - we cannot resolve any user we create in AD
 and
 generate an
email address for. The email address gets generated, it
 propagates
 and all is
good. However, when trying to attach to that profile
 (resolve it
 from the
outlook client) it says it cannot resolve.

 1) It appears the servers are talking to the GC's.
 2) We are able to ping the NetBIOS name.
 3) Even directly on the exchange server with a client
 installed, it
 gets the
 same error
 4) The first exchange server has been ripped out and
 reinstalled
 many times
already (my theory is this is the problem)

What I am asking is if anyone ever heard of such a problem
 and what
 you guys
 suggest. Thanks!!!

McAfee The final Results.

2002-07-02 Thread Majetic, John RAME

Well I just got done replacing McAfee VirusScan with Trend OfficeScan on all
my desktops, and I thought I would post the results here.

Trend found 22 out of 84 computers had a virus on them despite having
VirusScan with up to date (4209) data files installed on them. They were all
set up to check for new dats automatically. Most had multiple infections,
with one even having 6 different viruses on it. 90 percent of the viruses
were Outlook based email viruses that somehow got through GroupShield, and
VirusScan!

I even saw several infections from KLEZ, and supposedly you didn't even have
to be up to date on your DAT fields for VirusScan to clean that one.

I just thought that this info was worth putting out there for those using or
thinking of using VirusScan.

I remember a product from a few years ago that would take all incoming
attachments on Exchange and strip them from the mail, then store them
elsewhere while still making them available to the user as if they were
in the DB. I can't find it now. Does anyone remember this tool?
MailEssentials will strip them, but I don't think it allows the user to
retrieve them as if they are still in the DB.

I have seen the exact same results when moving from McAfee to OfficeScan and
have seen similar but not as bad when moving from Norton to OfficeScan. The
worst is when you see it is a computer that has been troublesome but never
able to diagnose correctly.

RE: McAfee The final Results.

2002-07-02 Thread Stephen J. Norton

I can't speak for Trend, but I just installed Antigen last night. The
installation was relatively painless, the file extensions to block have to
be entered manually one by one, the auto update for the sigs works great,
their support people so far have been very good, the subject line content
filter works well but is very particular, it uses, in my case four different
virus engines and it makes me coffee in the morning.
OK. So it really doesn't make me coffee.
The bad news is I'm having an issue with end users not receiving
notifications of virus laden emails. Antigen is catching them and stripping
the infected attachments but not notifying the recipients. I need to rename
some Antigen .adb files then stop and start all services. Then enter all my
file extensions by hand again (by the way, thank you Martin for the list).
Guess who's going in real real early tomorrow.
Steve

Personally I use Trend. I have always had excellent experiences with it.
I demo'd anitgen and while it is a great program, I found the interface to
be kludgy. Also the fact that I have to enter the file extensions one at a

Frankly, both are excellent products and you cant go wrong with eihter.

I can't speak for or against Trend as I've never used it.

OTOH, I installed Antigen a year and a half ago and I've loved it. To my knowledge, we haven't recieved a single virus through company email since.

The only thing I would change is that I wish files were scanned for viruses before they were filtered by attachment type. I filter all executables and Antigen doesn't give me a quick way to determine if a file is a clean executable or a virus.

.net questions

2002-07-02 Thread Thompson, Elizabeth

Situation:

go to .net for web at this time, becuase they could do everything they
needed to with out it. not that great, can do the same stuff myself

no-tech manager a then went to non-tech higher up b (my boss's boss) and
said what! we need to go to .net, as MS says it is the next best thing!

non-tech higher up b (my boss's boss) said to my boss what is up with
.net and why aren't we going to it? MS is advertizing it all over the place!
we need to get it!

my boss said - Find OUT what is going on!

I went to technet and MS and now the lists.

Per MS it is a XML web serivce which somehow has serversMS site was not
clear on how it worked. The Technet article were better on told me that .net
is a programming framework to link web and traditional server systems
together to enable better flow of information.

Am I correct in my undertsanding?

Is .net server a true NOS based or is is just web services?

My undertanding is that it is not offically released yet, is that correct?

Is anyone beta testing it? If so what problems have they found with Exchange
and Terminal services? I thought I read from one of my lists that there were
issues with exchange??

Who is planning on going to it?

Funny, just got out of a meeting with MS about .net. I would suggest
getting your MS rep out there to the developers and infrastructure groups to
see what .net provides for both areas. Your basically looking at XML Web
Services that will allow you Rapid Application Development and cross
platform communication. There are four parts to .net: Clients, Servers, XML
Web Services and Developer tools

We just got the developer pitch today (kind of understood what was going on)
and will get the infrastructure part later (my area). But .net as far as I
can figure is a family of development and server products.

Exchange 2000 is one of the .net applications but I don't think Terminal
Services really changes much between Win2K and .net servers. Biztalk
Server, Share Point Portal Server, Exchange 2000, SQL 2000, etc. are all
part of the 12 server products that will be available. There are also the
development platforms Visual Studio .net, etc.

RE: .net questions

2002-07-02 Thread Martin Blackstone

It sounds like what her group was discussing was the .NET development
platform (ASPX, C#, VB.NET, etc).
At this time, its easy to confuse the two (dev vs. server).

Frankly, I left it up to our developers to decide. All they needed from me
was to upgrade the MDAC and install .NET Framework on the servers

I just thought that this info was worth putting out there for those using or
thinking of using VirusScan.

for add/remove users and basically all admin tools were in the browser
(like the admin web site, but much more). The other two seem to run
pretty nice. Our 3206 is running AD , DNS, DHCP, and PoP3 mail services,

Change the registry on the local pc, or you can do the server side fix
as well, which was like putting a rule in the public folders. Check
mskb. TweakXP can make the registry changes for you automatically, or
just enter them in.

RE: Active Directory and Exchange 5.5

2002-07-02 Thread Benjamin Zachary

Tony, without the ADC you do not have synch between the 5.5 database and
the AD database. You have to manually go in and add mailboxes to users,
and users to mailboxes. Then if you make a change on the AD you have to
go into 5.5 and reassign the owner. Stuff like that. Also making new
users without the AD wont populate the 55 db, so again you create 50
users in AD, then you create 50 mailboxes, then associate those 50
mailboxes to each user one at a time.

Trust me, use the adc :)

Hi, I've been asked to upgrade our Windows NT4 domain to Active
Directory. We are currently using Exchange 5.5, and I would hope to
move to Exchange 2000 in due course. However, I think upgrading both at
the same time may be a bit too much work. Is it possible to continue
running Exchange 5.5 with all the users being in AD ? Is the AD
connector essential in these circumstances. I played with this scenario
in a test environment, and after upgrading the domain, I was still able
to access Exchange without installing the AD connector. I was under the
impression that AD connector HAD to be used after upgrading.

My AD domain name and NT domain names were the same, ie. DOMAINNAME
became DOMAINNAME.AD.

I'm a bit confused as to the role of the AD connector in this scenario.

Thanks,

Tony.

NT networks typically will use NetBIOS over TCP/IP for name resolution,
i.e. WINS before DNS. That article refers to host name resolution
(Hosts, DNS etc... before WINS) which *Outlook* as well as other

Subject: Note on moving Exch 5.5

As we have been discussing, I moved my mail server this past weekend.
A note on a blip I experienced:
I changed the internal IP on the new server to match the old server's IP
(I
gave the old one a completely different IP) after moving mailboxes so
that I

would not have to mess with router settings and such for the NAT. It
worked
fine, because the DNS was still correct, mail came through, etc.
On Monday, when people started Outlook and it looked for the new mail
server, some users had issues with the new IP. They were trying to
resolve
to the old IP. I blew out WINS and it still looked for the old POC. A
well
meaning coworker added an LMHOSTS entry for the server (GOD
NOO).
Bad form, but it worked at that moment, which is all users seem to care
about.
I plan to go back and fix this issue when things settle down.
I just wanted to bring this up for posterity's sake. *wink

.NET has at least two meanings:

In one sense, .NET is just the latest thing Microsoft is using instead of
a version number. We had Windows 95, 98, 2000, ME, XP, and now .NET.
Likewise Office, SQL Server, Exchange, and so on. Ho-hum, marketing strikes
again.

In another sense, .NET is a software environment. .NET combines a number
of tools and technologies to give developers an application framework to
develop software in, and users to run it in. Microsoft says it will let you
develop software faster, make it run better, eliminate backwards
compatibility problems, make everything platform independent, and create
world peace. ;-) I expect reality to be something less then that.

The two means of .NET do not necessarily have anything to do with each
other. Sure, Windows.NET is supposed to be Windows re-implemented on .NET,
but software release schedules being what they are, it would not surprise me
to see that pushed off into the next release. :)

Note that Windows XP and Windows.NET will coexist for quite some time.

Windows XP = Client OS
Windows.NET = Server OS

I'm running 3206 in a test environment and its running okay. Found out

the hard way that e2k doesn't work on it

and the RDP5.1 isn't implemented correctly. (Cant connect to it via
WinXP
 using rdp5.1).

I'd double check your config then. I've been using Win.NET Server since
3604 and am now running 3628 and I never had any issues using Win.XP to
connect via RDP to the Win.NET box.

oh yah and the new sharepoint on it is much nicer.

I assume you refer to Sharepoint Team Services which are removed in
later builds.

Hey William is that new build on the msdn? I didn't see it ..

Nope. Build 3628 (which William I believe refers to) is only for beta
testers.

I thought that's what you meant, I have 3602, but I knew you had the
newer one and mine was 06. heeh ..

Siegfried - A bunch of us went through this before, and I know some
people said there's works, but mine never worked, with or without a
domain or AD. I even tried joining the domain from an xp box and then
doing it, I got an error every time. Being fairly proficient in RDP TS
(manage about 12 servers @ 250 users) I felt I had it all setup
correctly just for a basic connection from an admin acct. Oh well,
looking forward to the new build..

Don't forget that old NetBIOS node type in DHCP. P-node, M-node .. or
whatever it was to tell the dhcp client which order to process requests.

I
don't think it can be done, your best bet would be to backup offsite then and
have the ability to restore. Geocluster was a product we were reviewing last
year I know Sunbelt uses it, but at the time I don't think it handled exchange.

  IssuesSubject: Exchange and Remote Exchange?

I've gotten conflicting responses from several peers around me and so I
want to pose the same question to y'all.
I have this idea: We have a network with a e2k server. It is where all the
mail comes in/etc...I would like for disaster recovery purposes to connect a
vpn to the network. At the other end of this VPN at a remote location would be
  another server - E2k.
I would like the internal server to replicate itself and all messages/etc
to the remote server. This could be done in real time or just once in the
  evenings.
  Is this possible?
I was told it would be like a front end/back end and the remote server
would only have 'shortcuts' pointing to the message on the main server.
I would not want the remote server to handle incoming user requests due to
bandwidth constraints on VPNs (ie perhaps more cost).
In case of disaster and the main e2k blows up, I would want the remote
server to be ABLE to take over (I realize I would need to setup / route IP
  etc). =20
