Viktor, It might be your carrier, phone lines, ISP, or a squirrel in a tree. Anything is possible. What I do is log as /root and try ifup ppp0 . Once connected its easy enough to go back to KDE. Personally "if" has always worked for me better than kPPP every time. Don't forget to /root and then ifdown ppp0 to close your connection. Pj
Re: [expert] windows discovered me
Hey Aric, Relax, don't drink the beers and ponder this. I would use Partition Magic to remove all traces of Linux first. Then I would create a 2MB partition and format it as ext2. Then, and again, using Partition Magic I would create a 15mg partition at the top of C: drive (above Windows) and install Lilo. Then reinstall Red Hat or Mandrake 7.0. Once your Linux is operational you can go in and change Lilo to boot to either system - it doesn't care. If you don't, it will automatically boot into Linux. You can also change the boot time to more minutes and give yourself enough time to select your operating system. If you want to boot into Linux via diskette put LILO after the 1024 limit. It isn't necessarily recommended but I did it for a long time without any apparent negative effects. In either case, Windslop will NOT recognize or bother ext2 Linux. I understand the lastest distro from Mandrake includes a new journaling system called reiserfs. I don't know enough about it to make a statement except I believe at installation you have the option of choosing reiserfs or ext2. I've only used ext2 and I know this to work with Winslop without problems. I've done this a couple of times. Winslop totally ignores Linux, yet I can still access and change its files in the Linux invironmnet without any problems as long as I don't try to save them in a format unknown to Linux. As a very bad example, I can *save* as htm or .jpg or ascii format but not as Visual Basic or Office document. This is just my $.02 worth. I'm just a newbie hangin' out and listening. Pj

Re: [expert] As a newbie :)
Don, This may not be helpful but the one thing I discovered about Linux is that if there is even a hint of hardware problems it does not install nicely and it's a nightmare to configure. I didn't know I had an I/O problem or bad memory as the problems were not consistent or persistent, but L-M knew it. Every piece of software required a forced install. By the time the problems were resolved I'd installed three new boards, 256 new memory and 4 new video cards. It is amazing the difference in sys performance now. Re: [expert] Duplicate message
About the list-bot... Normally the bot only sends duplicate messages under two conditions other than member error. About 3 times a year it seems to take a vacation and when it does everyone gets double and triple messages. Messages also seem to get fouled when the weather is bad, most notably in the winter and rainy seasons. Our four-state weather has been horrible for a week. I've received very few messages but only one has been in duplicate. Now this same nasty blizzard type weather is moving into the Midwest and East coast where root servers are located. The forecast is for -40 to -60 wind chill. I know it's going to affect the telco lines where I live even though we are a hub and I am 5-blocks from the switch. That said, I am positive that Mandrake is aware of the issues and is listening and will resolve the problem as soon as possible. Duplicate messages are irritating but is the price we occassionally pay for this service. Pj Keep in touch with http://mandrakeforum.com: Subscribe the "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" mailing list.

It is my understanding that 7.2 is not compatable with previous distros. The only problem free "upgrade" to 7.2 which contains the new file system is to do a clean install. I was told the same will be true of the next distro which is scheduled to be released late spring or early summer. BTW, http://www.lsl.com has several different Mdk tools at $1.89 per CD. Re: [expert] Slow system
Sorry, I have to disagree. For our new users I'd like to reiterate that the three most common reasons that Linux does NOT recognize the correct amount of memory are: dirty RAM, mis-matched RAM (different manufacturers) and shared RAM. Shared RAM can be corrected with a one line script. Dirty RAM can be corrected by removing and cleaning the contacts. Mis-matched RAM can usually be corrected by buying two or more sticks from the same manufacturer or retailer at the same time. Be sure to check the sticks ID before you buy it. Linux will always recognize the correct amount of RAM. I have previously used 64EDO, 128 P-100, 160 P-100 and now I have 256 P-100 on a Tyan board with VIA chip. It was all recognized correctly at the first boot. Windows almost always recognizes the correct amount of memory just as it correctly identifies Winmodems. Unfortunately trying to compare Winblows with Linux is like trying to compare a cow and a sailboat. There is not comparison and Linux is a lot smarter too! I'd also like to make a comment about motherboards and Linux. I recently wrestled with a peculiar problem. I couldn't install Mandrake properly regardless of what I did, and I was limited basically to the command line. After nine months of fooling with the box, the BIOS, the VIA chips, etc., I found the board had a bad I/O connection and weak memory. Even though the memory was correctly recognized Linux was smart enough to know there was something wrong and would not perform properly. I haven't had a problem since I changed the board and memory. I bet my problem is the VIA chipset support in the kernel Ahh.. Well, we fixed the performance with hdparm and mem=, but now, when the disk use is high (like when starting X) the computer freezes, the disk spins down and the harddisk light light constantly. The only thing I can figure is that it must be the ide chipset on the mainboard, which is a VIA chipset. I haven't gotten any response from anybody about this, so I'll past the last mail below and hope that someone will answer. If not we'll have to change the mainboard. Previous mail: I've had a lot of problems installin Linux Mandrake 7.2 at my friends computer. Sent a mail earlier about a problem with the system being terribly slow, and got a lot of good help on this, but encountered another problem (with might be related?) afterwards. I'll try to get this as specific as I possibly can. Please read on. The first problem I had was that the system was terribly slow, especially when starting X and other stuff that takes up more memory than just bash. I got two suggestions on how to deal with this; the first being to add "append="mem=128M"" in lilo, something that helped cause the kernel seemed to only see 64M. The second was that I should run hdparm to get the disk in 32bit mode and to use dma, I checked and the disk was running in 16bit and with dma turned off. So I fixed both of these problems and everything seemed to run a lot faster(16/no-dma=64M in 17seconds, 32/dma=64M in 3seconds). Then when I tried to install a big rpm from disk2 (hadn't started X yet) the system freezed. I could not do anything at all and the harddisk-light light constantly without the harddisk doing anything (it spinned down and got quiet). After rebooting the disk wasn't detected in the bios, I had to turn off again and then it was detected. I booted up again and tried to start X and kde2, but halfway into starting kde2 it locked again. It seemed after more tests that when there was a lot of activitiy on the disk it locked. I now shut off 32bit and dma on the disk believing that thi
Re: [expert] Slow system
Tom, Just for the sake of a good discussion, I said "common reasons." There are of course exceptions. The board and RAM I just replaced is a good example. The RAM was recognized in both Windows and Linux, yet 90MB of the 160MB were bad. It was sporadic. When it worked it was great but when it didn't it was a nightmare to diagnose. Re: [expert] Multiple attempted unauthorized accesses
I have a personal firewall set up on my Winbloze box. As soon as I made it active I noticed I was being scanned constantly from a machine with the same DNS. After four hours, I used ARIN to find the DNS and Netblock owners and sent appropriate messages. I haven't been bothered over much since. The next day I checked my system for open ports at www.grc.com to verify I was running in a secure "stealth" mode. The good news is that this free firewall fouls scanner attempts and allows me to secure the most common open ports. The bad news is that ports in the much higher numbers remain open, and is the reason I am building a box specifically for a Linux firewall. I previously contacted the folks at ALTER net and sent logs. They were most helpful as they don't like hackers and spammers either. [expert] Re: Off Topic: BIOS - Could an engineer help me?
Hello list, This message is lengthy - which is why it is OFF TOPIC. It pertains to hardware conflicts - which I'll get to in a minute - and why the plea for help. I'm looking for a hardware engineer to help me verify BIOS and to help me compose a letter to my reseller's engineer where I am trying to exchange this hardware, all of which is under warranty. I don't know how to talk to this guy; he doesn't read what I write, he sends stock "help desk" answers - which isn't as helpful as my ISP's customer support. To begin with I talked to the reseller's tech staff and customer support several times BEFORE I ordered anything. I was assured that the configuration would work and I would be happy; no hardware conflicts with what I wanted to order. I was warned that the K6-3 had problems with the tri-level cache processing certain types of mathematical computations - AMD wouldn't support it -, and it was suggested that I order the K6-2 instead. Armed with this information, I ordered the Tyan 1590s[VIA chipset], K62-500 and 2-64MB P-100. I requested that they assemble the board and burn it. They didn't. The board arrived with 1 DIMM, a noisy CPU fan and the heat sensor clip (power) installed between the CPU and fan. A friend who builds computers took the fan and CPU apart, installed the board and set the BIOS. The AMD CPU fan was replaced with a Pentium fan without a heat sensor. This machine has been a pain since I turned it on. I've replaced 4 new drives since February. I get black streaks across the desktop. I have trouble holding a net connection. The box locks, crashes and I see blue screens all too frequently. Linux isn't stable and neither is W98. Incidentally, the CPU/new fan now sounds like chattering squirrels . As I was concerned about heat because the heat sensor on the CPU is missing, I added a case cooler, slot cooler for the video card, and bay cooler for the 3-drives I would like to use. The temp stays around 40 degrees consistently regardless of how long the box runs. Finally out of utter frustration I started surfing AMD and TYAN looking for answers. Tyan supports the board. AMD does not recommend the 500 CPU on this board, and lists the boards that does support. this configuration. I went back to the hardware seller site and found a comment board for the motherboard. One of the messages posted talked specifically about the problems I am having. I contacted the author and explained the problem; sent him the reply from my hardware provider and he suggested he could try to help me. [He is the senior engineer for a large telco.] He indicated the problem is one that no one wants to talk about: the bridge on the the VIA chipset doesn't work with the speed of the P-100 correctly and causes the kind of problems I am having. [This explains why the same board with a 350CPU and EDO RAM runs flawlessly.] He first had me check the jumpers and straps on the board. They are correct, as is the multiplier and RAM speed. However, in checking I found one of my DIMMS was weak and removed it - which did help to stablize the system some - but I still have a long way to go. Before Labor Day he sent me a list of things to check on the BIOS. He said if the BIOS checked out he would help me write a reply to the reseller's engineer that he would understand. I sent the information about the BIOS back to him before the holiday. There has been no reply since. I am in limbo. I can't setup Mandrake and I can't keep Winslop running. I don't know anything about BIOS and I don't know what to tell the reseller. I have all the messages pertaining to hardware specs and the letter from the reseller's engineer. I want to exchange boards and upgrade RAM to a better quality. I would be very grateful for any help. If there ever was a testimonial to knowing your hardware before you purchase it, this is a perfect example. Thanks and sorry for the length, Pj

Re: [expert] Vi/Vim - The editor from HELL! a little morecoddling?
As a new user I have enjoyed this thread a great deal because I got a glimpse at Vi editor thru it. I'm a Winflop user and hate it..which is why I am slowly moving into Linux, but I have an advantage. My guru is a Linuxgod/power user/debugger who is holding my hand. I've gotten over my love for GUI - except to play cards - and actually like command line. It beats winflop hands down. The biggest problem winflop users encounter is the differences between the two operating systems. It's impossible not to look for comparisons if only for a reference point. MC menu "looks" a lot like it's DOS counterpart because of the color and form, but that's where the comparison ends. The two are as much alike as a sloop and cow. And the Linux learning curve is horrendous. Man pages are written in Greek - or should I say Geek? Mandrake is bleeding edge technology for sure, but it's my feeling that if they wish to court the desktop set they are going to have to do more than include KDE and their best wishes. A broken KDE isn't any better than winflop, and we need some type of simple text editor that acts like a typewriter so we can send mom those long, rambling letters and create small HTML pages to amuse her. I'd like to learn to use Gimp. It locks up every time I try to scroll the font list. Why? I was told it is because the fonts are missing. Great. How am I supposed to learn to recognize fonts if I can't see them? I don't have a clue what avantgard or babledable looks like, or the sizes that can be displayed, and I haven't yet figured out why the missing fonts are listed in the first place. I'd rather see five fonts that are included than lock up on 20 that are not. Mandrake is in it's infancy in terms of age, but it's going places fast, and it's gaining ground every day. The developers do a great job and they work hard to put out a good product. Yes, some improvements and changes can be made and they are being made, but I think it's going to take more than a few newbies to coax them into the changes we would love to see--especially when we trash their product on this list. I used Pico a few times. It isn't my editor of choice but it will do until something better - that I can use - comes along. I use a small, free (750k) no-frills editor from Norway that is dual function. I can write a letter, or click an icon, and write html code. If I can use it under Wine it will solve my basic writing problems. If we want the developers to help us like they did a year ago when Denis, Steve, Civileme, Axalon, Jean-Michael, Ramon, Dave, Brian, and others like them, were watching the list and responding then we have to change our collective attitudes. The power users and guru's are lurking in the shadows watching this list but they are silent as are many of the sys admins and networking guru's who used to be very active. The temper tantrums, cursing, rudeness and trashing the best Linux product available will not get custom scripts or hand holding when we need it the most. Yeh, they used to do that too and on a daily basis. An installation choice has been the best idea to come out of this thread. This is Mandrake after all, IMHO the distribution most suited to the widest range of experience from newbies right up to experts. How do we get this into 7.2? now there's an idea. linux should have the command #tutorial nnn, like man, but it pops up a clearly written dummy's guide with lots of examples. I don't think there's a tutorial command Then I hereby propose it. I agree that there is a lot of documentation and help out there but you really have to hunt for it. It is scattered all over the place, most of it is on line so you need the network connection to be running. There is a need for clear and concise explanations and examples right at your finger tips. A public domain tutorial along the lines of a dummies book for each command, available from the command line, would be an immense help. The sheer number of UNIX books out there testify to the short comings of man pages, and the how-tos can't help if you're not sure what you're looking for. The problem isn't with the lack of documentation out there, in my experience it's that nobody bothers to read it before running to the nearest mailing list/newsgroup/guru/whatever. I'll put my New Guy hat on and tell you why. ;-) That's because there's nothing telling the new guy where to find that documentation. No one remembers the Diablo drives, 5M fixed 5M removable (soft sectored cartridges made for some fun when mounted on a hard sector drive :) But that was "high tech" compared to storage which consisted of paper tape, punch cards, mag tape... Of course, even these were great when compared to programs "written" on 30"x30" (if I remember the size correctly) plug boards with loads of wires and the odd diode to prevent backflow. That was about the time it took an entire weekend to sort a few thousand "records" (cards, one column at a time) if not too many cards were "eaten" by the sorter which required a trip to the 026/029 machines... Then VM appeared on the IBM360/67... One way to test this is to open a teminal and run the applications from there. It is apparent that *something* is not quite right :/ You said GNOME always starts with two windows open. Re: [expert] 7.0-2 Hardware conflict
John, Thanks for the reply. I'm leaning toward a combination problem: me and ? I don't think I expect too much from Linux. This is like any other new-to-me OS. I'm working my way thru conflicts and learning from the seat of my pants. I do feel however, I should be able to connect to the internet, use email and have some type of stable desktop without locking up or crashing everytime I start X. I do not want to point a finger I only want to correct the problems or understand the methodology if it isn't a *problem* that I encounter. I did uncheck the autoconfigure host box as suggested. To answer your question I haven't been able to get back online to update any versions of Gnome or Gimp. I think you're right about the CRT and Xconfigurator. My current monitor configuration seems to be ok. I hope Linux never drops to the level of micro-sloth. The only reason to have Mdk is so I can install a system that suits me and not a billion other users. I love Mandrake..warts and all.. but the process of elimination sure is frustrating. IF this is checked in KPPP, you'll get the problems you've described with programs refusing to open when you're on-line. Not sure EXACTLY why this happens, but I know it's generally caused because you've changed the name of your box and now your X server can't connect The monitor was never been correctly identified but once configured does not seem to cause any problems. I generally don't bother with the auto-configured X settings. IMNSHO, the auto-setup isn't "ready for primetime" when it comes to setting up X. Maybe it's just that I like to mix and match hardware, but I've found that I generally have to use one of the X configuration utils to set up my X. What is the answer and is there a solution? Do I have a timing or hardware conflict or a combination? Probably a combination of the two. Or, maybe you're expecting a bit too much from Linux. After all, it's not quite at the same level of hardware detection and setup as Windows 9x is. John
Re: [expert] 7.0-2 Hardware conflict
Hi John, Ok..your explanation may resolve some problems. I suspected some kind of scaning was going on. Unfotunately, I can't run linux 24/7 until I move from W9x completely. Generally I am in Linux a couple of times a day. One of the things I was taught in Winblows is... if I have lockups and errors to reboot because in theory it resets the registry. Think of it as an automatic SCANDISK at bootup. It will do a QUICK check of the filesystem every time it boots, and a more thorough check after every few boots, which is one good reason NOT to reboot frequently, if you can help it, and to leave the system on 24/7, if it's an option. Kppp is configured for server assigned addresses. I have two ISP's. I've never had the *reset* problem before, if this is a *normal function* that is all I need to know. I like Jay's suggestion. New users like myself with no *nix experience don't know how to deal with broken, or disfunctional apps. If I had more experience I would want a choice. The problem as I see it is this..if Mandrake gives us what we all want we'll have a 500-pound monster that still won't work smoothly with some machine configurations. Downloading is a bane to all of us, but in this case smaller/easier is better and a system that purs is worth some inconveniences, imho. Personally I'd be happy to see my video card, monitor and scanner supported as well as a better CRT sizing capability. You can't please all of the people all of the time, but Mandrake does a good job of giving us a great product. I want to make a short comment about Windows. There are more than a few of us that have dual boot systems. Yes, this is not a Windows forum, but there are times when it's necessary for a Linux user to ask Windows questions. I purchased two Mdk distro's still don't have a stable system so I need Windows until it is running correctly. I love Linux and I wouldn't trade Mdk for a 10-gold plated computers with real M$ systems installed. The point is, go easy on us dual users. Civeleme, AMEN!!! Are you listening Mandrake?? Some of our guru's have played in Linux for an eternity; they know of what they speak. .. Pj Civileme wrote: I have noticed a number of office-style aplications are offering the SEND instruction from desktop icons, jpg files and such. This is not, unfortunately a practice limited to windows though there one can SEND a Microsoft Word file to a floppy as well as email out. The usual effect of this send instruction is an attachment to email or direct transmission of a file. IF a similar instruction is implemented on Mandrake for any of the supported desktops, I would suggest a default format conversion to *.rtf, SYLK, DIF, etc, depending on the file type, with possible options offered to the user to change the transmission format. Why? Every day I have to deal with messages sent in WordPerfect format without even so much as an extension to hint on type--and I have to deal with Word 95 Word 97 and Word 2000, and I have to set up OUR systems to open these furschlugginer attachments from email with a SINGLE CLICK. I train users here to be more courteous, but still there are those who are so dyed-in-the-wool Microsoft fans that they take their work to their home computers And make floppies in formats that the folks they are supposed to be supporting cannot read (version format conflict). Linux should be about interoperability, so if we are to have the Brain-Dead Send instruction, at least let it default to something someone on the other end can probably open without buying new software. I urge all the list members with complaints to take it to Mandrake! The purpose of this list isn't to trash our developers but to help users who need it. Telling the list that this, that and something else doesn't suit *you* defeats the reason Mandrake has a bug report. It is possible, after all, that other users do NOT have your problems with your system. Mandrake developers rock! They give us the hottest, latest bleeding edge technology available. Ron, Thanks for you comments. I agree that activating a filter will remove certain types of mail. Re: [expert] OT: Linux Newbie
Civileme You've been on this list a very long time. I've seen you post sharp replies to some authors. I've seen you take a break from this list. I've read your minutely detailed replies that were one page long. I've even seen a typo or two, but I've never seen a swear word or derogatory remarks about Mandrake or just plain bad manners in your posts. If you remember when I joined this list the developers monitored it and were quite active. Now it is rare to see a reply to this list directly from Mandrake. There's are more than a few of us who would like to correct the problems and put the list back on track. I got a lot of "understanding in my soul" by being here and being exposed to those Mandrake and Linux specalists who, btw, are sorely missed. Maybe this effort is for nought. Perhaps the developers and old guru's will never return, but we will not know the answer if we don't make the effort. Mandrake does a great job of giving us a terrific product. We want them to know that their effort is appreciated by many members of this MUG list and their collective expertise is needed here too. Turning on a filter is an easy way out of trash talk. You breathe Linux; It gives me nightmares. If I filter mail I might miss a learning opportunity and I can't afford it. Thank you for your comments, patience and cool head, Civileme. [expert] OT: Linux Newbie
Hello List, My comments are not intended to start a thread or a flame. Please contact me privately if you feel compelled to comment. I am a newbie, a fact I do not hide. I joined this group several months ago to learn- when I loaded my very first mdk distro and discovered how deep the water is. You have taught me well and for that I am grateful and I thank you for your time and patience. During these months I've watched an ugly metamorphisis take plce. The list then was monitored by Mandrake developers and programers. They generously took time to respond. The list then was filled with replies from some of the brightest minds in the Linux communtity. Combined, these folks probably had a million years of *NIX experience they were willing to share just for asking. So what happened? From my vantage point I've seen an erosion not only in the type of question but also the attitude. This list was composed of well-mannered men and women..what my father would call ladies and gentlemen. The list slowly changed from a polite demeanor to one of demanding, shouting, cursing and temper tantrums. Our Mandrake developers have been cussed, discussed and generally trashed because some whiny baby doesn't know how to use a new operating system. Thus the fault changed from the operator to the program creators. [Speaking for myself I can only say that every error message I've seen in Venus, my distro, has been of my own making becasue I don't understand the basics yet.] This list is for Mandrake Experts. It is not a baby-sitting service. No one on this list is obligated to answer any question. No one is obligated to answer instantly. Your demands, my demands and future demands are just that: demands. The gentle members of this list frequently ignore these messages as they should. Lately, I've read a lot of messages with attitude written all over the subjet line: "How many times do I have to...?"; "Mandrake Sucks"; "I've written x times why ...?". Regardless of content the message is the same: I am the most important person on this list and I demand an answer right now! Guess what? You aren't the most important person on this list. Everyone has equal standing. If you don't have a life, get one. As far as I have been able to determine there is no perfect operating system. Not every piece of hardware made will work on every system. Not every piece of software written will work on every system. There are too many machine configurations to consider. The advantage of Linux, particularly the Mandrake distro, over Winblows is twofold: MUG and modules. If *it* doen't work to your satisfaction you can fix *it* yourself without waiting months for a patch that fixes your whole system. Many times in the past a Mandrake developer would posted a small script to fix a particularly thorny problem for one person. I don't see this anymore. To the people who need this list the most, I have some advice: Be polite. Please and thank you go a long way toward getting a quick response. Be patient. We live in every time zone in the world, please take this into consideration as well as the fact that we all have private lives. STOP SCREAMING!! It's annoying and a guaranteed way to not receive a reply. Stop making demands; it's rude. Admit you don't know how to do something and be grateful when you get the answer. We all have frustrating issues, don't let it spill into this list. This MUG is a great group of guys and gals, please help keep it that way. Thanks, Pj
Re: [expert] OT: Linux Newbie
Before I found this MUG, I was in a newbie list, where I rightfully belonged. I was beseiged with foul language and temperamental children telling me and others to RTFM. I didn't appreciate the language then and I don't appreciate it now, personally. The reason this MUG was a great resource was because it was inhabited by persons who acted like adults. They didn't need to swear because they were frustrated. They needed answers and got them from their peers who were also on this list. At one time this list was not composed of home users. The people that ran our universities, and medical schools, and governments, and large corporations were very active on this list. The security experts and system analysists were here to help us secure our systems and make our networks function. Those names are missing, as are OUR developers and debuggers, that wrote the little scripts and taught us little tricks to keep us up and running after we shot ourselves in the foot. They are all gone. The only way to achieve this level of help again is to clean up our collective act or build a new MUG. From where I sit, and reading the level of questions submitted tese days there doesn't appear to be much to work with. The question is very basic. Do you want the guru's and developers back on this list to help us or not? If you do clean up the language, lose the attitude, exhibit a modicum of self control, open your ears and develop some patience. Then, just maybe Denis, SteveP, Dave, Zak, Ramone, Chamouol, Axalon, Jean-Michel and the other old heads will come back and rescue us from ourselves. I don't know about any one else on this list, but I need all the help I can get that's why I'm here. I'm not likely to leave and I'm not likely to help a whining, screaming, kid with a foul mouth and bad manners. And I know that I am not... a majority of one. Whether or not we read doc's isn't as important as trying the best we know how according to our level of knowledge. Not all of us have the ability to read the man page, but we all have the ability to try to clean up our own mess. As far as I am concerned if we are smart enough to run a Linux system successfully we are smart enough to be civilized and act like it in public. This list after all is a public forum. Pj

DrakeX setup a swap partition, a /boot partition (hda5) and a root partition (hda7). Boot loader is lilo. I need to reinstall Windows 98. I understand that if a do this Windows 98 setup will remove lilo from the boot sector in favor of its own boot loader. For this reason I am trying to make a boot floppy so I can mount the root filesystem and reinstall lilo after I reload 98. I have tried created boot and rescue disks using both dos (writeraw) and linux following the instructions from the documentation. The boot disk works but whenever I select "rescue" from the "boot:" prompt and put in the rescue diskette I get an error. I am not sure but I think the error message is the same as below. I have also tried to use mkbootdisk to make a boot floppy. When I boot off it says it is trying to load the root filesystem off of hda7, I then get an "Error: 0x10" message. Any suggestions. May-be somebody will give you a real bit of advice: let me just express my sympathy. Boot and rescue disks seem to work only in a plathonic space of ideal computers and virtuous users. If you installed Linux from a cd, you can just allow Windows to destroy your boot sector, then make a fake upgrading of Linux from your cd, during which you'll tell it "Oh, yes, I'd love to install a loader! Lilo 'd suit me perfecly well" Nevertheless, If I were you, I would backup everything I 'd think valuable. But I must say that I 'd do that only if I were you: beeing myself, I wouldn't probably be so patient, and I 'd take the risk of loosing everything. [expert] video card
I installed "Air" Power Pack tonight with the help of a L-M guru. We ran into some weird things while trying to install the video card. This guru is a sys adm with several years of *NIX and programming experience and runs the same version on his machines as well as S3Virge video card. When I built this machine I ordered a Diamond S3Virge3D/2D AGP/8MG memory. It is guaranteed to work under Linux, and is the only part I ordered that wasn't a 'boxed' version. The card is installed in the AGP port. We tried three different methods to install it including SuperProbe. We tried different monitor settings including 'custom.' Nothing worked, but I discovered Winblows calls it a S3Inc.Trio 3D/2X. Linux calls it a S3Trio3D/2X PCI. I was told it was a Virge 3D/2D -not 2X- with the S3 chip from Diamond. The CD-ROM I received is a Diamond Speedstar A55. I've seen several threads about video cards and a recent one about SiS chip and I don't mean to confuse the issue but I have a couple of questions. My Tyan 1590 board has the SiS chip. Would this have any effect on the video card? Secondly, what do I have and what should I do about it? My inclination is to send it back and get the correct card. If this isn't what I should use with "Air", what should I order? I do have a AOPEN S3Virge PCI that does run under L-M very nicely, but it only has 2mg memory. All comments will be appreciated. Not sure I understand, John. M$ (plain vanilla) HTML worked okay before FP. I think I probably wrote what Scott said wrong. He said that SSI's, like counters, won't display properly in an FP page without the FP stuff in his server too. He runs Apache. Re: [expert] reconfiguring disk
I use Windows version Partition 5.0 to re-partition on the fly. Unless Windows partition is full, you should be able to reduce the size of FAT or FAT32 and increase the size of Ext2. If you want to contact me privately I can try to walk thru it step by step. I boot Windows directly and Linux from a floppy (because I'm past the 1024 sector boundary?). What I want to do is to shrink the Windows partition (I'm only using about 2G of it) and use the rest as more Linux partition. I'm trying to run Partiton Magic to do this, but it keeps telling me that my partition table is bad. It might be, but that's the only place where there's a problem since the two OS's run fine on their own. The partition table is as follows (for the first drive) partition 1 0 - 0 - 0 thru 1023-255-63 partition 2 1023 - 0 - 0 thru 1023-255-63 Clearly, this information is bad, but it won't let me change it to more reasonable values. Any one have any ideas - my next step is to get ahold of the Power Quest folks for their help. Thanks, Lorne -- Lorne Schachter (732) 819-0460, (732)819-0460 (FAX) http://www.intact.com/~lorne
Re: [expert] What is going on with BUG tracking??
For years I lusted for a *perfect* operating system. So I bought Winblows, only to discover that 90% of the "PC compatable software" caused my machine to crash, lock up and puke blue screens. Then I started hearing whispers about a new OS called Linux. " It's stable," they said. "It'll run for years," they decried. I listened, I read and a kind of limited understanding settled in my soul. Linux isn't integrated - it's composed of modules. If a module doesn't work correctly I have a couple of options. I can download a new version or fix it. I have Mandrake; I'm happily stable and looking forward to the day I can contribute something back to the community besides html. One of the reasons I like and prefer this group is the level of civility. Polite questions always garner a polite answer. Pj
