[Finale] System Divider only in score

2019-10-16 Thread Michael Lawlor

Fin 2014.5

I have created a system divider, //, in a score but it shows up in the
parts.  If I delete it from the parts, it gets deleted in the score.
How do I define the system divider for the score but not the parts?

Is there a way to mix rhythmic slashes with notes in the same staff? I'm
doing a bit of a sketch score type of situation, with guitar chords on
Layer 1 and bass notes on Layer 2. Is there any way to set Layer 2 to do
Normal Notation while still leaving Layer 1 to be Rhythmic Notation?

Re: [Finale] OT: Vocal Underlay of "Mrs.:

2019-08-27 Thread Michael Edwards

[ Robert Patterson: ]

FWIW (joking aside) my copy of Merriam Webster correctly identifies
"missus" as dialect in one of the definitions, and I would rather
avoid

that implication.

In that case, how would "Mr - s." go? But that might cause the
singer to start pronouncing "Mister" - although surely as they got to
know the line they would realize it's not that, so it shouldn't be an
issue. (Nothing seems truly satisfactory.) Maybe "mis-sus" or
"miss-us" in parentheses underneath the "Mr - s." would look like a
pronunciation guide rather than dialect.
Or, alternatively, "Mrs. -" (the hyphen acting as a syllable
extension and going under the second note). That wouldn't need the
pronunciation guide underneath in parentheses.

[Finale] ISO B paper sizes

2019-06-21 Thread Michael Lawlor
I have created a B4 score in Finale by selecting the only B4 size
available.  When trying to print this to PDF, I got a message indicating
the paper sizes do not match.  I have worked out that Finale is using
JIS standard instead of ISO.  I have fixed this by changing to custom
page size, but wonder why this "omission" has occurred and why ISO and
JIS are not both included in standard definitions, or ISO preferred over
JIS.

Is there a way to save a custom page size so I do not have to set it up
each time?

Re: [Finale] No success sending PDFs to Australia

2019-05-14 Thread Michael Wittenburg
Raymond,

That sounds like an email client problem. I found out that AOL.COM years ago
was stripping out all my attachments, or worse, not even bothering to send
emails with my attachment, which was my resume! I can't even imagine how many
jobs I never even really applied for due to that...

Anyway, I have good luck with gmail, but if it's being weird, try Outlook.com
or another mail service?

It also might be THEIR email client that is stripping the pdf away, since I
find gmail pretty reliable, and I see that's your email service. You might try
uploading to Dropbox and then sending them the link to share. You can also do
this on Google Drive. On either, there should be a menu that has "share" as an
option and that's where you put in their email to add them as an authorized
viewer.

Good luck!

Re: [Finale] Opera Score Order

2019-04-24 Thread Michael Wittenburg
Yes, this makes sense; that way, when you have an ensemble of singers they are
stacked in a similar order to the hypothetical chorus. I just did Verdi Requiem
and that's how the soloists are stacked in that score, mirroring the chorus
setup.

I can also say from my experience with something like the sextet from Lucia
that the soloists are all stacked in SATB style.

It's there in the Drums section -- Bongo Drums.  It shows up if you
select "Common" or "All" or "World" in the left-hand column and then
select "Drums" in the middle column.

At least that's what happens on Fin25/Windows.

[Finale] Cannot hide time signature, cannot change stave name

2019-03-06 Thread Michael Lawlor

[Finale 2014.5]

This is something I have done before with no problems, but just cannot
figure it out at the moment.  I have created an exercise in semibreves
(whole notes) and do not want a time signature to appear.  I edit staff
attributes and untick time signature in items to display but it has no
effect on the time signature of the first stave.  I have done this for
all the staves and it works, except for the first one.  I have tried
switching it back on and off again and it has no effect; I have created
a new staff, named it, hidden the time signature and entered the notes
of the first stave from scratch (not copy-paste).  This works until I
delete the original, offending stave and the time signature appears on
the first stave again.

Problem two

In this same exercise, I set it up just choosing four of the same
instruments.  Finale appends numbers after the duplicate staff names,
but when I try to change the staff names (using edit full staff name
...), they change except for the sequence number.  In score manager, I
can see the correct staff name in the "full name" in the panel at the
bottom for the selected staff but the one with the sequence number in
the instrument list at the top.

What have I missed?

Thanks in advance of a solution.

[Finale] Enharmonic key signature?

2019-01-29 Thread Michael Meyer
Hi all —

I thought I knew how to do this, but it’s not working. FinMac26.

Concert key is E Major. Have a tenor sax part that displays F# Major, but I
need it to display Gb Major instead.

I thought I did this in ScoreManager for the instrument’s Transposition, either
by checking or un-checking the box for “Simplify Key” — but doing that hasn’t
changed the displayed key signature from F# Major.

Am I doing it wrong? Is it actually something/somewhere else?

Thanks for any help.

So Robert, when you say “3rd party plugin” do you mean plugins that others
have made that you’ve procured along the way? Or “3rd party” meaning “not
included in the included Finale plugins” and so you have made all of these
on your own?

Just a question out of curiosity more than anything. Thanks for all of your
descriptions here, this is an amazing discussion! And I would love to hear
how many of these are addressed in Dorico out-of-the-box from someone who
is using it regularly.

[Finale] Fwd: Glisses in Finale

2019-01-07 Thread Michael Lawlor
I was using Aria Player and Garritan, so I have tried switching to
softsynth but still get no sound with glissandi going directly from one
note to the next.  It appears to behave if I tie two notes together so
there is only one gliss. attached to each note, but the sound is not
very good and only hints at being a glissando (i.e. it starts to gliss
but does not reach the next note and there is a gap between notes).

Are you using Aria Player and Garritan instruments? If so, glisses will
eventually degrade the playback. The solution is to save the instrument
setups and re-install them from time to time.

[Finale] Playback of glissandi

2019-01-06 Thread Michael Lawlor

Finale 2014.5

I have just started a work for string quartet that opens with a set of
six chords, joined together by glissandi.

I entered the notes and listened to the playback and it sounded fine.  I
used the smart shape tool to add glissandi, but when I tried playback,
there was no sound.  I deleted the glissandi, tried playback and it
worked, but the pitches that sounded were all wrong.  I deleted the
glissandi and tried the pitch bend and then the guitar bend tools.  They
played back for the first two shifts but not the rest and the pitches
kept on shifting and I did not like the result, which was very
disjointed.  I tried the glissando tool again, but there was no sound.

Does anybody know if I am doing something wrong or does it not work?  I
have tried glissandi in the past with older versions of Finale and they
worked some of the time but were always problematic.

Hello David and Steve,

Steve’s understanding is correct. The Dolet 7.2 for Finale plug-in is there so
you can get batch import, batch export, and MusicXML 3.1 support in earlier
32-bit versions of Finale. All these features are built into 64-bit Finale as
of v25. Dolet is a 32-bit plug-in, so it won’t show up in either Finale v25 or
v26.

I think I would put the soprano at the top, but the rest in normal
orchestral order.
I have an idea that chamber music does usually follow orchestral
order, with a few exceptions - such as piano (when present) at the
bottom, or a solo singer at the top.
If I recall correctly, Schubert's Octet has the score arranged in
the order: Clarinet; Horn; Bassoon; Violin 1; Violin 2; Viola; Cello;
Double-Bass. (The Horn is another exception to orchestral practice -
put above the Bassoon, in average order of descending pitch, so
classifying all the wind together.)
Beethoven's Septet (with almost the same instrumentation) does
similarly in copies of that score I've seen.

So I would feel safe in doing what I just listed above.
 Hope that helps a little.

[Finale] Finale doesn't change key signatures correctly.

2018-05-10 Thread Michael Edwards

Hallo.

I have a problem in Finale with changing key signatures. There
are two basic options in Finale for this - to cancel the old key
signature (partially or entirely) with naturals before inserting the new
one, or just inserting the new one.
I always use the former option for this - the older, traditional
method - but Finale usually doesn't do this correctly, and I'm wondering
if this is a known problem and if there is anything I can do about it.
As I'm sure most here would know, you cancel the entire old key
signature if you go from sharps to flats or vice-versa; but if you go
from sharps to a smaller sharp signature or flats to a smaller flat
signature, you cancel only the flats or sharps in the old signature that
won't be in the new one. And if you are going from a smaller to a
larger signature of the same type, then, and only then, do you have no
naturals at all.
However, most of the time, I find that Finale puts in all the
naturals for the entire old signature regardless - sometimes even in the
last case I mentioned where none are needed.
To make things more complicated, it sometimes seems to do things
correctly, which is why I just said "most of the time". That seems to
suggest that there are unknown, invisible circumstances in each
situation that govern whether this problem occurs or not. In a case
where it does it incorrectly, though, no amount of tweaking or re-doing
it seems to make any difference.
This seems such an obvious problem that I would find it incredible
that it has not, over all the years Finale has being going, been noticed
and corrected.
(To forestall anyone asking, yes, I have tried different settings
in the menu item that controls key signature changes. It does change
some behaviour, but not in a way that is correct according to the normal
rules for changing key signatures, as I described above.)

Is this a known problem, and is there a remedy, please? Or am I
possibly doing something wrong that I just don't know about?

 Thank you.

         Michael Edwards.

Re: [Finale] Expression Problem

2018-05-09 Thread Michael Dutka
Hi David and thanks for your reply. Sorry I didn't make that clear. I
dragged the expression marking from its original location to the beginning
of the piece. I_think I remember which file that was (working against a
deadline, putting out lots of files every week), but now, any new file I
create experiences the same problem, likewise any old file once I change
the tempo marking.

But hey, couldn't hurt - I'll try to find the original file and delete and
re-enter the tempo marking to see if that solves the problem.

Best,
Mike

[Finale] Expression Problem

2018-05-09 Thread Michael Dutka
Hi, folks. Running Finale 2010 on a 2011 MacBook Pro OSX 10.8.5.

Did one little thing a few days ago that's caused no end of trouble. I
moved an expression (tempo) marking from the middle of a score to the
front. Ever since then, I've been experiencing strange problems with the
expression tool and playback.

For one thing, the first eighth of a beat of every measure doesn't sound.
Music that I wrote before that plays correctly, but if I try to input new
music into an existing file, the minute I change the tempo assignment, the
same problem recurs.

I can compensate by adding an extra blank measure at the beginning of each
piece, but then I have to delete it to print, and it's really annoying.

Also, the expression tool itself started malfunctioning. In some new files,
changing tempo markings has no effect on tempo - I can set q=63, 72, 112
and it makes no difference.

I've shut down and restarted the program, rebooted the computer, and
nothing helps.

Has anyone else experienced anything like this? Any ideas on how to fix it?

I'm assuming that uninstalling and reinstalling the program will restore
original settings, but I'd be extremely grateful for any other advice or
suggestions.

Many thanks in advance and best regards,

Mike

[Finale] TG Tools Fit Measures tool glitch

2018-01-30 Thread Michael Wittenburg
Dear List,

I love the TG Tools Fit Measures feature; I hate having to set up all the
systems nicely and neatly one by one, as it is time consuming. However, I am
continually running into a glitch where when I tell it the number of systems to
set up the music in, it will jam EXTRA measures, bafflingly, into the first
line, making it nigh-unreadable, and then weirdly space out the rest of
measures across the remaining systems. Sometimes I can make it behave,
sometimes not. Sometimes if I go "too many steps" at once, it will cause this
error, and simply adding one system at a time until I'm happy will look
correct. Other times, I'm forced to go and set all the systems to my own
liking, basically negating any work I have done with the tool. This may be
happening only when I go from fewer systems to more (to fill out a page, for
instance), but I am not completely certain on that.

Has anyone else run into this issue?

Thanks in advance,

Michael Wittenburg

  Thanks for your suggestions, David.
This goes way beyond my current knowledge of Finale, so I will
probably just have to ignore it, and pretty well not use playback as a
useful rendering of a piece. (My music tends frequently to include
slightly strange situations like this.) I can only say that, once I do
know those midi matters generally, I will refer to what you said and use
that to help me solve it; but for now it goes way over my head. I
suppose I naively thought there might a simple fix I just didn't know
about.
As I said before, I used two layers in each manual staff, to
distinguish the notes which stop earlier, and the few that continue
sounding: the layers that contain the notes which stop earlier contain
the complete chord (four notes in each hand), whereas I used extra
layers to duplicate, and give a longer note value to, the few which
continue; that is, the low G in the right hand, and the F and B in the
left hand. Also, the B/Cb duplicated in the layers uses two different
enharmonic spellings: the one which is in the big chord is written as Cb
to reflect the spacing of the total chord all in thirds, but the copy in
the notes which continue longer is written as B, because those three
notes act like the penultimate G7 harmony in a C major close. Is it
possible that putting the same note in two layers but using different
enharmonic spellings could somehow be causing this, or at least
complicating it? I don't really want to change the notation, because I
think there are good reasons for doing it this way.
It doesn't seem likely to me, though. Much the same thing
happened in a piano piece which is totally diatonic for dozens of bars,
so there are no accidentals whatever. I had a situation where the bass
notes change bar by bar, going down one step for each new bar, but the
sustaining pedal is meant to merge them all together for three or four
bars (the upper harmonies were compatible with this), accumulating them
one by one into a mini-cluster - and I used layers and the v1/v2 device
to tie these notes and gradually let them pile up until there was a
cluster of about 4 adjacent notes tied over - and the same thing happens
when I try to play that back.
So it doesn't sound like enharmonic anomalies such as in the organ
piece are the problem, but just too many notes, tied for differing
numbers of beats. (I fear this may come up again and again and again,
as I do tend to write very intricately voiced music to highlight the
structure.)
I didn't fully understand your suggestions, David, about the extra
staff, midi channels, and so on - but would this alter the actual
appearance of the score on the page? I've got that looking the way I
want it (except that I still have dozens and dozens of minor tweaks
about note positioning and so on), and it does reflect exactly what I
want - so I wouldn't really be keen on changing the visual appearance of
the score in order to solve playback problems. This piece uses the
normal three staves for organ music, but it sounds like your suggestion
would involve using one or more extra staves, which I don't think are
necessary at least for visually reading the score.
Anyway, I think I will have to put this in the "deal with later
on" category. But thanks all the same for your suggestions.

Michael Edwards.

Re: [Finale] Extraneous note appears inexplicably in organ music playback.

2018-01-07 Thread Michael Edwards
[Christopher Smith wrote:]

Thanks for your suggestion, Christopher. I thought for a moment
you had it, and kicked myself for not checking. I've just looked again,
and I'm afraid it's not that.
I neglected to say in which octave this rogue B appeared, and it's
in the lower octave. The Bb that ties over is the one almost an octave
above Middle C - but the rogue B is definitely an octave below that,
adjacent to Middle C.
Nonetheless, in case the octave was deceptive, I used the asterisk
to show the accidental to check out what you said - and the higher Bb
definitely is a flat, not a natural. There is definitely no B or Cb
anywhere in that bar. There is in the following bar (which contains the
same chord shifted down a perfect 5th) - is it beyond the bounds of
possibility that the Cb from there is somehow being shifted a bar or so
earlier by the Finale playback?
So I'm afraid the matter is still unresolved.
Can it just be a software or memory glitch or bug that does such a
thing? Perhaps I just need to delete the whole bar and do it again from
scratch, and see if it happens again.

[Finale] In playback, some notes don't last as long as they are notated (piano, organ music).

2018-01-07 Thread Michael Edwards
Hallo.

In certain passages of a piece where the texture is more
complicated than usual (lots of extra sustained notes inserted either
with an extra temporary layer or by the V1/V2 device in Speedy Entry, or
a combination of both), I have noticed that some longer notes don't
sustain nearly as long in playback as they should - I don't know if it
affects short notes too, but they are too short for me to notice.
I suppose I should really post sample bars here for anyone who can
answer to look at, but I don't know how to do that yet.
Is this, in general, a known problem, and is there any solution to
it?
I have so far entered only piano and organ music since I bought
Finale some months ago, and this appears in both of these types of
music.
Here is an example in an organ piece I wrote many years ago but am
now entering in Finale: three bars before the end, the following chord
is sustained for several beats (in ascending order and all notes on
manuals spaced in 3rds):

   Ped.: Db Ab at bottom of pedalboard;
   l.h.: F Ab Cb Eb;
   r.h.: G Bb Db F.

A few beats later, all notes are released except for G in the
right hand and F B in the left. Those notes are written as an extra
voice in both manual staves, with the l.h. using B instead of Cb for its
spelling, because that F B G serves as a dom. 7 before the final C major
chord. Yet when the point comes where all the other notes are released,
in playback the F B G does not continue to sound - everything ceases
together.
I've noticed this kind of thing in others contexts, too, in piano
music. Is the arrangement of notes and voices just too complicated for
playback to render correctly, or is there a way of fixing this?
  Thank you.

Michael Edwards.

[Finale] Extraneous note appears inexplicably in organ music playback.

2018-01-07 Thread Michael Edwards
Hallo.

In an organ piece I am entering, the following chord appears near
the end, all notes named in ascending order and all spaced in 3rds:

   Ped.: Ab below middle C;
   l.h.: C Eb Gb Bb;
   r.h.: D F Ab C.

A couple of beats later, all notes are released except the F in
the right hand, which is sustained into a new chord (a similar chord
based on Db in which the F becomes the top note). But at the point you
release the first chord, in playback an extraneous note creeps in - a B
(Cb) in the left hand which really jars.
I have double checked, and that note is not notated anywhere in
the chord (in either enharmonic spelling), and there are no missing or
misplaced accidentals: I cannot see anything wrong at all about the
notation in the score - yet that odd note chips in at the very end of
the total chord.
What is going on here? Is there a way of fixing it?
  Thank you.

[Finale] Microtone accidental positioning

2017-11-14 Thread Michael Lawlor
Finale 2014.5

I am working on a piece with a lot of microtone accidentals, using the
articulation tool.  Even though I have specified horizontal and vertical
positions for the articulation, this is ignored every time and I have to
position each and every accidental.  Is this broken as designed or is
there a way around it?

Re: [Finale] an 18th Century horn question

2017-10-23 Thread Michael Lawlor
Choose the key that fits the music best.  This could be the key of the
piece, but sometimes a related key is a better match. Also, the horns
could be in different keys.  Start with the key of the strings/rest of
the orchestra; if that causes problems, look for the simplest change
that fixes it.  It is also possible that the crooks could change if the
music modulates - you would expect to see some gaps allowing the players
time to switch crooks.

Hallo, Jef; thanks for the information you gave.
You may quite well be right that I lack an understanding of the
fundamental basis on which Finale works. Do you know if there are any
of the help web pages that explain this basis?
So far I have found various help pages that explain how to solve

Re: [Finale] Create multi-staff instrument

2017-10-15 Thread Michael Edwards
Perhaps I can't comment directly on this issue as it's already
emerged, but it does relate to an issue I expect to come up with my own
work, but I just hadn't yet gathered what seemed like enough details to
actually ask about it here yet. But perhaps I might try to briefly
indicate my problem, and hope someone can please help me, since the
topic has come up.

My issue is with piano music, and there are a few pieces I have
which will briefly require 3 or 4 staves, although I use only 2 for
maybe 95 percent of systems in piano music. (And nothing I write
requires more than two staves for the entire piece.)
I think I found a utility for adding a staff, but there were two
problems with it: Finale added the extra staff for all systems in the
piece, not just the one or two where I wanted it; and the curly bracket
at the start didn't lengthen to cover all staves, but just remained
covering two staves it considered to be the original ones, and not the
extra one or two.
Are there easy solutions to this, please?
Also, does creating an extra staff just for a couple of systems
have implications if, as I edit the piece, repagination occurs and the
distribution of bars on particular staves changes? Do I have to plan
for that, or will Finale look after it if the bars do later get
rearranged automatically (or I rearrange them manually)?

And, about previous suggestions already given in this thread:
suggestions were given to rename a part to another instrument - but
would that cause the playback to switch to the renamed instrument, or
would it continue to play back as the original instrument? (As I think
I once said before, correct notation is paramount for me, but I do want
to preserve accurate playback if that can be catered for in addition.)
And also a distinction was made between extra staves for a single
instrument and a "group" as solutions to Dennis's problem, and I don't
really understand that. I've read a bit about it in the help pages, but
didn't find it very clear.
Would either of these matters already mentioned in the thread help
my problem, as stated above?
  Thank you.

Michael, Edwards.

Harold,

Under the articulation tool, there are actually four different trill signs,
including trill-to-flat, natural, and sharp upper note I tested these just now,
and each one plays back differently, as I suspected. I even forced a
trill-to-unison by attacking a B-natural with a trill-flat sign.

If you're looking for quarter-tone trills, that's something I can't answer;
hopefully this helps!

I probably should have commented on the direct question asked,
about the type of bar-line. If you don't use the system I proposed in
my previous post, I would probably, myself, use a thin-thick double bar.
Just thinking about the Minuet movement of mine which I mentioned
before (which is in handwritten manuscript which I don't have handy now)
- I'm trying to recall how I did that; I certainly would have used what
I thought was the most correct notation, adapted to the unusual
situation but conforming to the rules as far as possible. The 1st-time
bar has the normal concluding repeat sign; the 2nd- and 3rd-time bars
don't need repeat signs - and I'm pretty sure I used a double,
"thin-thick" bar-line for both of them, one after the other.
So I think that would be applicable if your situation, too. To my
eye, a double-thin bar-line might not separate sufficiently two bars
which are written consecutively but are never played consecutively.

Hallo, Dennis.

I'm not quite sure what rules govern this, but I would consider
not using first- and second-time bars at all, but instead using the
"Coda" system, similarly to what you sometimes see in Beethoven piano
sonatas. He puts an instruction at the end of the Trio section of
Scherzos or Minuets that goes something like "Da capo al segno, e poi la
coda". (I may not have got that quite right, as I'm recalling it from
memory without any reference handy). In your case, the "segno" you
insert would be at the start of the final bar of the A section.
To be sure, the "coda" in the Beethoven examples was a whole short
concluding section, but I don't see why you couldn't use it for a single
bar that is just a different version of the final bar for the "A"
section.
I have a Minuet movement in a sonata that I have yet to put into
Finale, which requires *three* endings - because the "A" section in
binary form with both halves repeated requires two versions of the final
bar, and then there is a 3rd version of that bar for the final "Da capo"
occurrence of the "A" section. I dread the battle I will face when I
finally try to get Finale to do that, because it seems very unorthodox,
and I suppose I will have to use 1st, 2nd, and 3rd endings. But for
just two endings where it's not a conventional repeat, I would very
likely use the "e poi la coda" system.

Create the examples you want in Finale, forget about getting it to

Double click at a corner and drag a rectangle including the music you
wish to copy into a word document. Go to the graphics pull-down and
select "Export Selection" [If you want to export a whole page, do not
bother dragging a rectangle around it, just go straight to graphics

Oh - I forgot to add just now: it was both those in the left hand,
not one in the right and the other the left. I think that was when I
mentioned Scriabin's 10 Piano Sonata, which does that near the end. It
may sound confusing to read about, but the score is perfectly clear and

Well, so far I don't think I need that (although I do recall years
ago trying to write a piece in 4/4, but the two hands had permanently
staggered bar-lines - and it made sense in terms of the rhythm I was
using).
But I have seen scores where some instruments are playing a fast,
repeated figure in 3/8 time and other instruments are playing a slower
theme in 4/4 time, and the barring is separate in these two sections, so
that four 3/8 bars fit into one 4/4 bar - or similar. And it wasn't
anything like Ives - I forget what, but it was a romantic, tonal
symphony or something. And I have seen in Edgar Bainton's "Concerto
Fantasia" a section where part of the orchestra is playing in 3/2 and
another part in 4/4, with crotchets exactly the same in both, so that
the bar-lines coincide sometimes, and don't at other times. Again, that
is a romantic piece - nothing avant-garde.
It is conceivable I could want to do things of that sort one day.
I'll try looking at the thing you suggest, so thanks for that.
But I am currently doing a piano piece where 4/8 and 12/16 play a
roughly equal role, although one or the other may predominate at
different times, and both may appear simultaneously at other times. I
want to use each time signature strictly where it applies so as to make
this dual aspect of the rhythm perfectly plain. I've already found out
how to have 4/8 in one hand and 12/16 in the other (it plays back
correctly, too, but mangles up if I try to copy and paste such passages
anywhere); but I haven't yet found out how to make some of the key
signature changes half-way through the bar, as is already required a
couple of times; and there are one or two passages where both time
signatures appear in one hand. I am suspecting that, if the last is
possible, it will take some serious fakery.
Would it work if I temporarily created three staves, so that two
of them, for instance, can be assigned to the right hand, with the two
different time signatures, and then, once I've filled in all the notes
and other markings, I can put one exactly on the other, so that it looks
like one staff - and I could then use a bit of graphic fiddling to hide
the actual time signatures (which would be literally on top of each
other once I superimposed the staves), and then put in a new graphic
composite time signature for display and printing?
To that end, can anyone please tell me how to create a temporary
extra staff? I searched and searched in the help files on line and the
2009 manual for this, but couldn't find it - only a method for adding an
extra staff for the whole piece, with bar-lines that don't join those in
the two main staves, which I don't think is what I want - it seemed
intended for adding a new instrument to the ensemble. Or do I have to
do that, then remove the extra staff somehow from most systems that
don't need it, and find a way of joining the bar-lines?
  Thank you.

Michael Edwards.

Re: [Finale] Things to be done in the middle of a bar.

2017-08-18 Thread Michael Edwards
That is rather disappointing and quite surprising to me, that
these things can be accomplished only with a lot of very complicated
fiddling around. I need to do all those three things moderately often
in the music I compose.
Key signature changes inside a bar are surely common enough that
they should be a standard feature of a program like Finale. Perhaps one
day they will add it. Repeat signs inside bars are just as common, too.
Time signature changes inside bars aren't, I suppose - but the
Beethoven example I gave was not just a sloppy practice of a composer
notorious for his untidy manuscripts, but entirely, completely logical
in the context. The 12/16 and 6/8 sections both start and finish with
half-bars, and so the parts of the bars match up exactly.
So I suppose if I ask whether it is possible to have two different
time signatures in the same staff (such as 3/8 and 9/19 which can be
found together in the left hand near the end of Scriabin's 10 Piano
Sonata), I'm going to be told it's completely impossible, even in
Finale, am I?

[SN jef chippewa wrote:]

>not really "mid-bar" change, more like butt-splicing different pieces

I don't think I agree that it's not really mid-bar. If you look
at the passage, the half-bar before a change from 12/16 to 6/8 contains
six semiquavers, grouped into two groups of three, and the half-bar
after the change contains six semiquavers, grouped into three groups of
two. It all adds up and I can think of no better way of notating that
change. (The tempo changes, but I don't think that damages the logic of
the situation.)

>thanks for the reminder that i haven't listened to this piece in
> awhile :P

I first heard this sonata (no. 31 in Ab major, Op. 110) along with
its predecessor, no. 30 in E major, Op. 109, as a child, on an L.P.
played by Iso Elinson back around 1965, and it was like a window into a
new world. I was obsessed with Beethoven, and this record was one of
the earliest ones I got. I think the general style of notation I use
was probably modelled on the Schirmer edition of the complete sonatas I
got as a child, although I've done certain things differently to
accommodate more modern musical styles than Beethoven used.

[Finale] Downloadable current manual

2017-08-17 Thread Michael Johnson
Hi Michael:

a Downloadable manual is available here for version 25 through 2009
https://makemusic.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/115010572707-User-Manuals-Finale-v25-Finale-2009

The v25 manual was posted a few months ago based on user requess. Perhaps
your info was out of date. It certainly wasn't posted with the initial
release

[Finale] Things to be done in the middle of a bar.

2017-08-17 Thread Michael Edwards
In my early attempts to transcribe music (already written) into
Finale, I am finding myself wanting to do several things in the middle
of a bar which Finale appears, by default, to do only between bars. If
anyone knows how to do these, I would be grateful for any hints. I
cannot seem to find information on how to do these in the help pages, or
even any evidence that they can be done within bars.

1.
Change key signature. So far, I have found out only how to do it
between bars. And is it possible to change the default double-bar for a
between-bars key signature change that seems to be the default?

2.
Change time signature. I realize this is unusual, but I think it
can make sense in certain situations. For example, it can be found
several times in Beethoven's 31st Piano Sonata, Op. 110, where, in the
last movement, 12/16 changes to 6/8 mid-bar, then back and forth another
couple of times, always mid-bar:

http://hz.imslp.info/files/imglnks/usimg/a/a3/IMSLP51805-PMLP01488-Beethoven_Werke_Breitkopf_Serie_16_No_154_Op_110.pdf

3.
Put opening or closing repeat marks (or a mark containing both the
end of a repeat and the start of a new one) - possibly also in
conjunction with first- and second-time bars for the repeat that is
finishing.

Are there any ways of doing these things inside a bar? In all
cases, it is far preferable if it plays back correctly - but if this is
impossible, correct notation is in the end paramount. But I am willing
to do things a harder way if they will also play back correctly.
  Thank you.

Michael Edwards.

[Finale] Downloadable current manual.

2017-08-17 Thread Michael Edwards
Hallo.

Following links I was given when I joined here a week or two ago,
I tried to find a downloadable manual, because I am not on line a lot of
the time when I use Finale; but so far I have found a manual only from
2009, and, while a lot of what it says is applicable to the current
version, some things appear not to be.
Perhaps I got the links I was given mixed up, but I still haven't
found a current downloadable manual yet. Is there one? - or do
MakeMusic assume users are always on line?
If anyone can please point me to it, I would be grateful. (And if
someone has already point to this, I apologize - it will mean I have got
my information mixed up somehow.)
  Thank you.

Michael Edwards.

bit of a puzzle (it seems unlikely that the Dutch is also "override", so
this may be a way for Google Translate to draw a blank). But does the

[Finale] Bowing Plug-In?

2017-08-15 Thread Michael Dutka
Hi, folks. Reviewing a fairly large opera score, about 160 minutes of
music, and one thing that would be phenomenally helpful is some kind of
plug-in or app that would let Finale users see every up and down bow, even
when they're not written in.

The string players I've spoken to don't like it when I write in every
bowing mark, and ask me only to write them in when they're not obvious. But
it's easy for me (as a non-string player) to lose track, and possibly write
in a bad bowing combination, and we all know what working out problems
during rehearsals with live musicians costs.

Is there any such thing around? Anything one of you brilliant plug-in/app
writers would want to create? I, for one, would pay a lot of money for
something like that, and can't think I'm the only one.

Just curious. Thanks,

Mike

Re: [Finale] . Interesting article on battle over copyright for "We Shall Overcome"

2017-08-11 Thread Michael Dutka
I sang with the New York Choral Society when we were the backup chorus for
his Carnegie Hall concerts.

Needless to say, we prepared like crazy for our first rehearsal with him.
Somehow, our first song didn't go well, and we were looking around,
wondering what was happening. Bob deCormier, our conductor, stopped the
rehearsal, and Pete Seeger told us he'd been working really hard on the
Clearwater Festival, he hadn't had a chance to practice as much as he
needed to be as prepared as we wanted to be, and he wanted to apologize to
each and every one of us.

We just gave him a standing ovation. Not a guy who took himself too
seriously.

2017-08-05 Thread Michael Edwards
Thanks for that, Lawrence and David.
Lawrence, would you mind please giving me a link for the help file
section you mentioned? I tried looking around on the Finale site, but
might have been looking in the wrong area or possibly even the wrong
site.
David, I'll make a note of those books and see if I can find them.
I will be glad if I am able to get answers here. But my purpose
in wanting a manual was twofold: I would have something to refer to when
I'm not on the Internet and able to post here; and also I do expect to
have dozens and dozens of probably quite elementary questions, and it
would save a lot of posting of fiddly little questions here (which have
probably been posted dozens of times before) if I was able to find out
at least the more basic things on my own.

[Finale] Just bought Finale - is downloadable manual available (or third-party books on Finale)?

2017-08-04 Thread Michael Edwards
Hallo.

After many years of considering which music notation software to
buy, and a decade or more of forgetting entirely about notation
software, I have finally bought Finale. I have been on this mailing
list earlier on (possibly still am but my account was turned off, and I
have started a new one), and posted quite often for a couple of years,
but may well be long since forgotten by now.
Of course there are many things about Finale I will need to find
out, and I hope I can ask about some of them here.
But perhaps a reply to my first question will save me from having
to ask many future questions here. It is simply this: is there an
up-to-date user manual I can download from anywhere? The most recent
one I found was from 2009, and, while I expect a lot of information
there will still apply, I expect quite a bit will have changed also. I
do not have Internet access at home - only when at my mother's or at the
local library - so I will not be able to read the on-line manual at home
- only at my mother's, because I cannot install and use Finale on the
library computers.
So am I likely to find a current manual anywhere? Or can I ask
MakeMusic to mail me a paper copy? Or, failing that, are there any
third-party reference books published on how to use Finale (preferably
referring to the current version)?
  Thank you.

Michael Edwards.

Re: [Finale] 1/4 tone keyboard notation

2017-07-15 Thread Michael Meyer
Jef —

If I’m understanding the issue clearly, my suggestion would be to use whichever
transposition keeps the notated keyboard part in the same written key as the
piano.

Keyboard and piano are the same performer, no? Then to me that would be easiest
for the player. Keeping it in the same key as the vibraphone is immaterial, IMO.

Hope this is a helpful suggestion!

Re: [Finale] XML export in Finale 25.4 (Mac)

2017-07-14 Thread Michael Good
What’s going on is that Sibelius 8.6 doesn’t yet recognize the MusicXML 3.1
format or the new .musicxml extension. The best approach for now is just what
you are doing. That is, export with the .xml suffix and ignore the Sibelius
error message. The message incorrectly says “older” when it means “newer”.

Our Dolet MusicXML plug-in for Sibelius only does export, not import, so that
won’t make any difference in this situation.

Most MusicXML readers will just ignore the new MusicXML 3.1 features that they
don’t understand, so the exchange should still work fine. If you get annoyed by
the error messages, you can change your MusicXML preferences to export MusicXML
3.0 files instead. But don’t forget to change it back once your other
applications start adding MusicXML 3.1 support.

Best regards,

Michael Good

Re: [Finale] 1/4 tone keyboard notation

2017-07-14 Thread Michael Lawlor
Consistency? I think that's irrelevant; after all, in a regular
orchestra there are instruments in different keys, the transposing
instruments are not all in Bb, but since it is an electronic instrument
that is being retuned, there is no problem with strings snapping so I
think the decisive factor should be which notation is likely to make the
keyboard part easier to read/play, especially if having to switch from
keyboard to piano.

Michael

Hi All,

I am engraving a piece that is in 6/8. There are places where the dotted
quarter beat is divided into 2. I've seen scores where that is notated with
2 dotted eighth notes and I've seen notated as a 2 eighth note tuplet.
Which is correct or can either be used? Thanks to anyone who can offer
their advice.

Both are valid and which you choose is down to which you think will get

Hi, folks. Running Finale 2010 on Mac OSX 10.8.5.

Been working on my first full-length opera, and the Act IV Finale (no pun
intended) became, for want of a better word, corrupted.

When I try to play it, it takes several minutes to load. Since I'm one of
those, 'try this, play it, don't like it, try that, play it' type of
composers, that makes work on the file pretty odious.

I tried to export the file to .xml, and it keeps giving the message 'Error
while exporting MusicXML file [FILENAME] at part 22, measure 11."

Since that's somewhere in the string section (it doesn't seem to go by
staves), I tried deleting the entire string section, exported it, imported
it, and I get a file that loads and plays immediately.

Now I'm trying again with the original file, deleting strings section by
section / measure by measure to try to delete the measures with the error.

Is there any easier way to do this? Is there someone I could (gladly!) pay
to take my original corrupted file and send my back an uncorrupted file?

Any advice / suggestions deeply appreciated. Thanks and best,

Mike

The first thing to try is File Maintenance. That might fix the problem. At
the very least you'll get a report. On the report is something called
"Frames". Hopefully that number is nowhere near 32767, otherwise you will
be having continuing troubles.

FWIW: Garritan, at least, starts much faster in Fin25 than some older
versions. I don't know about Fin10, though.

[Finale] Repair Corrupted File?

2017-07-01 Thread Michael Dutka

Mike

[Finale] Problems Printing 11 x 17

2017-06-17 Thread Michael Dutka
Hi, folks. Running 2010 on OSX 10.8.5 (and yes, planning to upgrade as soon
as I finish my current project).

Trying to print 11 x 17 scores, and but when I do, I get the error message
that some of the pages don't fit the size of the paper in the printer.
Pretty sure it's a Finale issues, not a printer interface, because I get
the same error message even if I try to generate a .pdf with no printer
selected.

The Page Size settings in the Page Layout menu look right - Tabloid Width
11 Length 17.

Is there some other setting that could be interfering? Any advice,
recommendations?

Many thanks, and best regards,

Mike

Re: [Finale] Cannot find files within Finale

2017-04-30 Thread Michael Lawlor
Refreshing the files, restarting Finale, ensuring the parameters for the
folder are set have had no effect and the files are not in the SYSTEM32
folder.
But I have now gone through everything and restarted Finale several
times suddenly, the folder has reappeared. I do not know which action
fixed it. One thing might point at the problem, although I have 2014.5
installed, I have noticed that when I open a file via Window Explorer,
it actually opens up FInale 2014d. Even when I try to force the file to
open with 2014.5, it still opens with 2014d.
Thanks for the help; it seems to be working at the moment.

[Finale] Cannot find files within Finale

2017-04-30 Thread Michael Lawlor
[2014.5]

I have a folder that I can see from Windows Explorer and can select
files and they open in Finale. However, within Finale, if I try to open
a file, the folder is invisible. Are there parameters I may have
inadvertently set that is causing this?

Re: [Finale] Time signatures in text document

2017-04-17 Thread Michael Lawlor
Further to my initial request for help with time signatures in word
documents, I would also like to include mensuration signs in addition to
the semicircle 'C' for /tempus imperfectum prolatio minor/: circle with
dot (/tempus perfectum prolatio major/), semicircle with dot (/tempus
imperfectum prolatio major/) and circle with no dot (/tempus perfectum
prolatio minor/). Is there a font with these?

[Finale] Time signatures in text document

2017-04-16 Thread Michael Lawlor
I want to include time signatures in a Word document, preferably with
one number directly above the other, rather than making it look like a
fraction. I have tried superscripts and subscripts, but something
resembling real music notation would be better. Also, I do not just
want regular time signatures, I also want to include 3/1, 6/2... Does
anyone have any advice to provide on the easiest way to do this?

Re: [Finale] REPEAT SIGN INSIDE A BAR

2017-03-31 Thread Michael Lawlor
Create two bars of the appropriate length, hide the time signatures and
put the repeat between the two bars. If you are relying on bar numbers,
you will also have to modify the measure regions so you do not end up
with one bar too many.

Re: [Finale] Finale 25: Lyrics window problem

2017-02-14 Thread Michael Withers
Dear all,

My lyrics problem has now righted itself - and I have no idea why it just
started working again!

HOWEVER for the record, I want to express my thanks to Michael Johnson, VP
Professional Notation at MakeMusic, who leapt straight onto the case from what
he saw on this list and has spent quite a while trying to help me get to the
bottom of the problem.

Okay. Another idea I had is to trash your preferences. Sometimes this helps

[Finale] hourly rates for 2017

2017-02-09 Thread Michael Wittenburg
I was curious as to what those of you who use hourly billing are currently
charging in your various regions. I switched from a per page rate to hourly a
few years ago, with progressively increasing rates starting with straight
engraving of existing parts and scores, to arranging, to audio transcription,
to actual composition. If anyone would care to share any of their thoughts
about this either publicly on the list or with me privately off list, I would
welcome any and all comments. I'm trying to be careful about setting my rates
in a healthy range that is neither lower than the industry standard yet not at
the highest level, either, and thank everyone in advance for their ideas.

Michael Wittenburg

I've seen this problem, or similar, in Fin 25. Whatever causes the lyrics
disappear seems random, but usually I can restore them with Undo, provided I go
back far enough. You might also try restarting Finale or even the computer. (I
sometimes have to restart the computer for playback issues.)

But your problem sounds like a simpler issue. Are you certain that "Set Current
Lyric" is set to the same verse/chorus/section number as you are expecting?
There is some strange behavior around this feature and it is worth checking.

Re: [Finale] Finale 25: Lyrics window problem

2017-02-09 Thread Michael Withers
Hi John and Christopher,

Thanks for the link to the lyric hyphenator page. It's a marvellous resource
and worth sharing more widely.

Another great hyphenator is https://www.ushuaia.pl/hyphen/?ln=en. This one
works best with single words or shorter texts but has the advantage of allowing
hyphenation in many different languages.

However, marvellous as they are, they are a perfect example of my problem: I
can't use them because I can't copy/paste into the lyrics tool edit window!!

Thanks

Michael Withers

Many thanks for your suggestion but in this instance 'undo' does nothing and
the lyrics remain doggedly missing!

Hi Michael,

I rarely get problems like this, though I’ve heard of them. Often, hitting Undo
restores the lyrics when they disappear, I’ve been told.

My contribution is to provide you with this website, which offers automatic
hyphenation in English. Copy your lyrics into this window, hit the Hyphenate
button, then copy them back out and paste them into the Finale lyrics window.
You still have to check them (“Bless-ed” instead of “blessed”, for example) but
it saves a ton of work.

[Finale] Finale 25: Lyrics window problem

2017-02-08 Thread Michael Withers
Dear all,

I'm hoping the corporate wisdom of this illustrious list can help with this
problem, or at least point me in the right direction

Everything has been going OK with Finale 25 since I upgraded.

Yesterday I was successfully entering lyrics in my usual way (couple of
glitches but I put that down to inaccurate fingers or me not being careful).
My usual way of working is to copy/paste lyrics into the Lyrics Window,
insert the necessary hyphenation and then click-assign the lyrics to the
score.

Today, the Lyrics Window is behaving very strangely. If I copy/paste lyrics
into the Lyrics Window and click the 'Click assign' button the lyrics I have
pasted disappear. Vanished!

If I put the lyrics in by using type-in-score then the lyrics DO appear in
the Lyrics edit window but don't seem to retain their connection to the
score, i.e. if I then make a change in the lyrics using the edit window, the
changes ARE NOT reflected in the score.

I checked the other versions of Finale that I keep installed for emergencies
(2014 and 2014.5) and they exhibit exactly the same errors.

So I tried the version of 2014 that I keep on a laptop for emergencies - and
that works just fine, exactly as expected.

I guess this means the problem is with my main PC or with something in some
software or other that has updated itself recently. Yes, I've already tried
rebooting the PC (many times!) and deleting the preferences and starting
again.

Has anyone else experienced this problem or can suggest where I could look
to find the cause?

I am on Windows 10 with an i5 processor and NVIDIA GeForce graphics card

The setup has been working fine until today and I have been working with
Finale since 1998!!

Any pointers much appreciated

Best wishes

Michael Withers

Re: [Finale] Printer question

2017-01-17 Thread Michael Wittenburg
I, too, have a Brother laser printer; I got the duplexing one. This has ended
any and all trips to Kinkos for me, and I'm even not afraid if someone sends me
a whole score to print out; this will handle it.

I will say that my model (HL-L234DDW) had a habit of going into "deep sleep"
when I was running it in wireless mode, and would become unresponsive to new
print jobs. By plugging it back in to my desktop with a USB cable, it seems to
have stopped that from happening. It should still receive "air printing"
requests, though, since it's recognized by my network.

This is definitely under $100; you can snag it sometimes for around $80.

Hi Robert,

MaxScore exports from Max to MusicXML. But I'm not very familiar with the Max

[Finale] NYC (or Philly) Recording Studio With Sound Library Recommendation?

2017-01-10 Thread Michael Dutka
Hope this is an appropriate query for this list group, withdrawn and
apologies if not.

Long story short, got permission from a publisher to turn a children's book
into an opera. Writing the opera, as we all know, was the easy part.

As a next step, I wanted a recording, so the publisher could include a CD
with the book, hopefully getting little people interested in opera at an
early age.

Used a recording engineer I'd worked with in the past, with a simple but
very rugged system that let him record human voices over enhanced
instruments generated from my MIDI files.

He said he had a new system that was 10x more sophisticated, so
sophisticated in fact that it was_terrible! And finally, it crashed, taking
all my voice recordings and all past work with it. So, I need to start from
scratch.

Need someone with the capacity to import my Finale (or MIDI) files, record
the (two) singers and produce .mp3's we could use for a final CD. The whole
piece is fairly short, 18 minutes, score for a standard orchestra
(woodwinds in pairs, 4 horns, 2 trumpets, 3 trombones and tuba, strings
and_lots of percussion).

And something hopefully not outrageously expensive, but I do need something
that'll sound professional, and I know I'll have to pay for it.

Ideally in NYC, but Philly could work as well. Any suggestions deeply
appreciated, thanks and best,

Mike

Looks impressive, and based on the work you've done I can see why you
wouldn't consider merging .pdf's as an ideal solution.

I'm assuming all the Finale protocols as well as your plugin collection
treat rehearsal letters the same way as measure #'s, beginning again at
each new section.

[Finale] Rachmaninoff Vocalise: a scanning/SmartScore Lite project

2016-12-15 Thread Michael Wittenburg
Dear Finale List,

My latest issue is a friend of mine who has created lyrics to the Vocalise, and
I'm trying to turn it into a usable score for a singer to work from. My friend
is an anesthesiologist, not a musician, and had been plunking (slowly) the
Vocalise into his computer on Finale which he has mystifyingly decided to
purchase and learn to at least be functional.

To save time/money for other projects, I asked him if he had another version
around, and he replied his music professor nephew had it, but in Siblius.
Problem solved, right? Just send me an .xml file and we're done!

And now, the rest of the story. I have just opened the file, and it is,
unfortunately, ONLY the vocal line with lyrics, but no piano part. I really
would like to avoid coding this in from scratch, but I would really like to
have a fully fleshed out version to play from, and for the singer to see the
full accompaniment. So, my question is about SmartScore Lite; is it necessary
to actually print out a file and then put it into the scanner and then analyze?
Is there a way to simply have the program analyze a .pdf file if I
print-to-pdf? Will the SmartScan Lite be sufficient, or will I just create a
huge repairing headache for myself? Is the non-Lite version that much more
effective?

Ideally, it would be nice to get a hold of an .xml file of the actual song, so
I could simply spend my efforts on adding the lyrics and fixing the layout
issues, but I don't suppose one of those are around. It's unfortunately I'm
going to have to reinvent the wheel a bit to make this project work, so I'm
looking for the least painful solution.

Thanks in advance!

Michael Wittenburg

check that your finale Preferences/Folders/Configuration Files (on F2014.5,
names are different on F2010) are set to look up the file in the right
place.

Thanks for your reply. Checked all the files and can't find a file anywhere
that looks like instruments.txt. Probably upgrading soon, just have a few
files to go before that and have all the instruments I need in existing
templates, so not crucial, but if there is a way to get that

Super unsophisticated user here, so please take this with a shaker-full of
salt, but I've been working on a long composition with a piano-reduction
that'll consist of 30 separate movements / .mus files.

Rather than combine files in Finale, my plan is to merely delete page
numbers from one set of files, then generate .pdf's of all 30 files.

Then I can combine the files and renumber the pages in Adobe Acrobat. I'll
have one long .pdf with page numbers from 1 to whatever, plus resetting
measure numbers in each movement that'll be completely consistent with the
measure numbers in the orchestra files.

If this is a good idea, happy to help, and if it's a bad idea, happy to be
told why.

FWIW. Best regards,
  Mike

[Finale] Instruments.txt?

2016-12-09 Thread Michael Dutka
Hi folks. My 2011 Macbook Pro running Fin 2010 died. I got a new hard drive
and new logic board and reinstalled 2010.

Seems to be working ok, but when I try to create a new file with the Setup
Wizard, I get the following error message:

Finale could not start the Wizard because a necessary data file
(instruments.txt) could not be found in the Component Files folder.

I've searched for this file in Finder, and it doesn't seem to be there. Is
there any way to get this file without re-installing 2010? And if I do,
wouldn't I experience the same problem?

Any suggestions deeply appreciated,

Mike
