[Finale] Finale 25

2016-08-16 Thread Mariposa Symphony Orchestra
Well. Isn’t THIS not exciting...

http://www.finalemusic.com/products/finale/whats-new/?utm_source=responsys&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=25release&utm_content=upgrade

So few new features/enhancements. And all for the NEW upgrade price of $149.

Well, at least it IS full 64-bit. And claims bug fixes. And...well, I was
so thrilled I fell asleep while reading all the other touts. Some interesting
new Garritan sounds, including second violin KS. Harp two. Lots of other
sounds that don’t much affect my needs, though. Sorry to sound underwhelmed,
but – there you have it.I might have been a little more excited had the
price not been the most impressive thing about the “new” Finale.

2016-08-24 Thread Martin Nickless

Hi from what I've read I definitely won't be upgrading
May I ask what the consensus is as to which is the best version of finale
I seem to remember many complaints about 2014
I'm currently still on finale 2012 using Windows 10
Would be good to know

[Finale] Finale 25

2016-11-28 Thread Steve Parker
I’ve been playing with the trial.
I can’t see any difference between that and 2014.5 other than telling me that
Ambience is not supported.
Still no option to ‘reassign playback sounds' to Garritan. Still tells me it
has unexpectedly quit when I quit it.
Still takes ages the first time I hit play.
The contoured dashed slurs look nicer but the large time signatures are clunky
as hell for a new feature - the method (below) has more steps than my current
kludge…
The time signature dialogue can finally be clicked again, rather than dragged
(as in versions up to 2014), but the key signature dialogue (which was fine)
can now not be clicked and has to be dragged.

Not a very useful message, but I shall not take advantage of the $99 price..

Steve P.

Creating large time signatures is common in full conductor scores. You can
create these in Finale using the EngraverTime font
.
This method assigns the large time signature to the score but doesn't affect
linked parts. In this method, you'll create and apply a staff style to a score
to hide the usual time signatures, then change the time signature font options.
This example works best using a score with six or more staves.

If you're viewing a linked part and not the score, choose Document > Edit Score.
Choose Plug-ins > Scoring and Arranging > Global Staff Attributes. The Global
Staff Attributes plug-in

 appears.
Deselect Time signatures in score. Click OK.
Choose Document > Document Options. On the left, choose the Fonts category. The
Document Options - Fonts dialog box

 appears.
Next to Notation, select Time (Score). Click the Set Font button. The Font
dialog box

appears.
Choose EngraverTime, Regular, Size 48. Click OK.
Choose the Time Signatures category on the left. The Document Options - Time
Signatures dialog box

 appears.
Under Vertical Adjustment, in the Score column, set Top Symbol to 1" and Bottom
Symbol to -.75", and click OK.
You may need to experiment with these values to suit the needs of your score.
Choose the Staff tool
.
Click to the left of the third staff (to select the entire staff). Choose Staff
> Edit Staff Attributes. The Staff Attributes dialog box

appears.
Select Time signature in score. Click OK. The large time signature appears.
Repeat the previous step on subsequent staves, spaced apart as needed.

I had the same reaction -- especially to the upgrade price, with no early-bird
discounts.

No news on plugins either, and I don't see any info on Speedy entry (the only
method I use).

I think I'll be skipping this version ... at least until reports are in from

To be honest, for me, new features are at the bottom of my wishlist. I need
Finale to run FASTER, especially with larger files, and more of the existing
bugs quashed. Anyone know if a demo version is available to try?

Robert, I found your discussion about internals within Finale most compelling.
Please feel free to enlighten us more with those techoid details.

2016-08-16 Thread Craig Parmerlee
The company forum seems to be down. When one goes to
http://forum.makemusic.com

It comes back with "Your IP Address is banned from accessing this forum."

I got the same result when using a proxy from the Netherlands, so
something is wrong.

Personally, I'll probably upgrade, hoping that there are enough bug
fixes in HP and elsewhere to make it worthwhile. But I would like to
see some comments before I pay for the upgrade.

Also, there have been some occasions where ReWire support might have
come in handy. The recent editions of SONAR have great support for
automatically generating a tempo map from recorded audio. With ReWire I
can use SONAR to play a recorded program and then have Finale play
additional parts I created new. This would save me the time of having
to re-enter all the prior material into Finale to get combined playback.
I realize there are several ways to skin that cat, but ReWire would be
a nice option to have available.

Mostly I am grateful that they maintained MUSX file level compatibility.

What really hurts about the upgrade price is that it's the same as a
crossgrade price from a competitor's product, so people who have never
used Finale before but who have used Sibelius pay only the same amount
that we faithful Finale users pay for this new(?) version of Finale.
How's that for corporate loyalty to its customers?

Well, if it is any consolation, the content of V25 is not going to draw
a lot of people to crossgrade.

It isn't as if a person wavering about the switch would say "Wow, a
didgeridoo? I guess I had better make the switch."

[Finale] Finale 25 test

2016-08-18 Thread j...@thomastudios.com
I installed the demo version of Finale, since MM said it’s fully functional for
30 days.

I opened an opera file that has been causing distress lately. A big file,
7.5mb for Finale, nearly 1400 measures, orchestra and about 24 vocal
characters. Opening the file took a bit less time than Finale 2014 or 14.5.
Saving the file again took about 13 seconds vs about 20 on older versions.

Then I decided to seemingly tax the application some. I tried insert one
measure stack around m26; totally arbitrary. After 11 minutes I force quit the
program. Don’t have time for this shit.

So far, I am not impressed at all. I was hoping 64bit would make a difference,
but not much as far as I’ve gotten.

2016-08-19 Thread Raymond Horton
To answer my own question, yes Finale 25 still has the export to 2012
function. This is a good thing, at least for me , because this large file I
am working on is still rather slow in the new version, though decidedly
faster than 2014.5. Windows 10, by the way.

Re: [Finale] Finale 25

2016-08-24 Thread Dr . Raphael D . Thöne
Hi Martin,

I would definitely recommend you to upgrade to the new version. 64-bit support
and faster playback are extremely important for a good and fast workflow.

If you only do some minor things with Finale, sticking with Finale 2012 might
be ok, but I think, if you work professionally and want to work with Finale,
one also needs to support the company who puts effort into maintaining the
program. I have the impression that since Mark Adler took over the leadership,
they have changed their policy and now focus on developing it into a software
which is ready for the future.

I though would wait until they have fixed the printing issue (which won’t take
too long, I guess … and hope). I know this is annoying but believe me, the last
Sibelius upgrade didn’t work and it took a few days as well, before they had
changed the installer.

Best
Raphael.

There are complaints in every version. The question is whether you can live
with them. If 2012 works for you (it won’t install on my new Mac) it apparently
is quicker than 2014, 2014.5 or v. 25, so you could stick with it. The files
can be shared with other users of newer versions, and they can save in 2012
file format, so that issue is taken care of.

Re: [Finale] Finale 25

2016-08-24 Thread Robert Patterson
I don't think 2012 is faster than 25. It may be roughly comparable. Where
25 really blows away the earlier versions is in starting up human playback.

I also wouldn't let the print dialog issues stop you from upgrading. Though
the issues are annoying and glaring, there are workarounds. The actual
print quality is fine. (I'm pretty sure the print dialog issues are Mac
only.)

There are a number of significant improvements between Fin12 and Fin25. The
two big ones are 1) beat-attached smart shapes replaced meas-attached smart
shapes. This allows for much more precise placement in both score and
parts. 2) Special tool edits are unlinkable in parts. With these two
changes, linked parts are basically 98% fully functional.

Especially on Windows, I would not hesitate to upgrade from Fin12 to Fin25.

FWIW: The "2%" that's still missing from linked parts: unlinkable
horizontal offsets for mid-measure clefs, unlinkable vertical offsets for
rests, voiced parts recognize special tools edits, plugin edits in part
view unlink anything that can be unlinked manually.

Re: [Finale] Finale 25

2016-08-24 Thread Thomas Schaller
Robert,
deal breaker for me regarding linked parts is that you cannot copy certain
things from measure to measure in linked parts. For instance, I often fine tune
measure layouts in parts and if I have a part that repeats measures that
individual edit cannot be copied to other measures - instead I have to try to
make them look alike. If I remember correctly the same is true for things like
trying to copy a slur shape from one measure to another. That complicates
trying to achieve a professional look tremendously.

Has that been addressed as well?
Thanks,
Thomas Schaller

Re: [Finale] Finale 25

2016-08-24 Thread Robert Patterson
Thomas,

I address both of those issues with plugins. Copying slur shapes is trivial
with my Mass Copy plugin (both in score and parts). As for spacing, I
almost never manually modify spacing any more now that I have the Note
Spacing plugin (part of my plugin suite as well). Probably the number one
reason Note Spacing is so much better is that it has an option for
adjusting the spacing between ledger lines. It also has an option for
adjusting spacing after upstem flags. Even if you don't add any regions to
the list in Note Spacing, just the ledger line and upstem flags options are
worth the effort of using it.

And as long as I'm touting my plugins, another new one I'm so happy with
(for using myself) is Multimeasure Rests. It automatically adds space for
clefs, among many other addons to the built-in multimeasure rest options.

If it works as advertised - what will I do with all my spare time??!!

Further to this, the key sig box does have clickable arrows, but not when

Re: [Finale] Finale 25

2016-11-28 Thread Robert Patterson
The TGTools Mac 64-bit beta is definitely better than the TGTools Mac beta
for Fin14.5.

My experience is that human playback is MUCH faster to start in 25 than
14.5.

I haven't seen the crash on exit.

But even so, feature-wise there is virtually no difference between 14.5 and
25. The main one I can think of (besides some playback tweaks) is that time
signatures can be hidden/show separately in score and part.

There are some quite useful changes since Fin12. For me, the most important
is beat-attached smart shapes. This is quite a significant improvement if
you use linked parts. There is also a key bug fix since Fin12 that is
important if you use plugins in part view. I think there is more, but I
can't think of it at the moment.

Re: [Finale] finale 25

2017-03-14 Thread Lawrence Yates
I've now completely reinstalled Finale and everything seems to be working
now BUT - on playback some of the instruments (descant recorder for
example) seem unaffected by the volume controls in the mixer. This makes a
bit of a mess of any playback files using these instruments. Has anyone
else found this and found a solution please?

Lawrence.

[Finale] Finale 25 Octaves

2017-04-10 Thread Lawrence Yates
Hi,

I've just bought Finale 25 Windows.

I've had a couple of passages somehow being transposed up an octave without
any input from me. Fortunately I've spotted them so far but this could be
disastrous should I miss them.

Is this a known fault or am I doing something stupid? (Never had this
problem in any other version of Finale). The current problem was in a
bassoon part which I entered correctly. When I changed to look at the
score in scroll view it was transposed up the octave.

Cheers,

Lawrence

[Finale] Finale 25--Plug-ins

2016-08-17 Thread Steve Gruver
I just upgraded to Finale 25 from v2014.5 and have it found it to be very
stable and fast (especially when doing playback of a file). However, be
aware that TGTools, JW Tools, etc will NOT work with this new version until
they come out with a 64-bit version.

I received an email from Tobias Giesen (TGTools) this morning stating that
a 64-bit version for MacOS will be out in a couple of weeks.

Sorry, I’m on a Mac. There are too many issues in the Mac version for me to use

I use V25 routinely with Win10 and things run smoothly. I wish they had not
removed the BIAB plug in. That is the only reason I go back. And the file
formats are compatible so there is no hassle with switching between 2014.5 and
25.

Thanks to all who’ve chimed in. But so far, I don’t think we’ve heard the
simple answer to THIS question:

What’s the ADVANTAGE to upgrading to Fin 25?

Or more simply: why should anyone bother upgrading from 2014.5?

For Win10 users, particularly.

I am a little intrigued by the fact MM has reduced the previous price for
upgrading. Of course I can come up with PLENTY of answers, but the real ones

2016-11-28 Thread SN jef chippewa

that could be because there doesn't seem to be
one. the discussion back in august was -- in my
interpretation -- more about resignation than joy.

a speed issue on mac has been fixed. so the loss
of speed experienced witth F2014 has been fixed.
it is now as fast as F2012. and we should
somehow be expected to pay for that.

"dozens of bugs" were fixed, although they were
not listed so i have no idea just how important
this claim is, but should we be paying for bug
fixes? i don't think so, whether they are new
bugs or age-old ones, these should be fixed in a
free update, or at the very least ONLY as part of
as more substantial upgrade, not as its main
selling point, not when i am being asked to buy
it.

as i mentioned in that discussion, i am staying
with finale "for the kids", certainly not for the
amazing upgrades. but i am really on the fence
with this one. if i had a client that needed me
to have F25, i would be forced to get it. and i
may spring for it today (because i might
eventually have to have it), but i would much
prefer to sit this round out as a political
statement. if i buy it, i will for sure feel
like i am feeding alcohol to an alcoholic that
will just reinforce their unwillingness to make
the first step: admit s/he has a problem.

perhaps a better deal on the win side of things,

less-than-inspiring upgrade. more of a "degrade"

Nobody (except for MakeMusic or whatever the company is currently
called) has said that this is an upgrade that people should buy.

If I had upgraded for the initial "deal" of $149 I would be very very
angry with them for making this $99 offer.

I did not fall for it back when it was first announced, and I'm not
going to fall for it this time around either.

I fear I will not be buying another Finale upgrade for quite a while, if
ever.

I start all my new projects in Sibelius and it's been years since
anybody has contacted me about continuing to work on Finale files, so
I'll simply stick with 14.5 and see if I ever feel the urge to upgrade
to a newer version of Finale.

And while all along I've bought every single upgrade, often more to show
my continued support for Finale than because I needed something special
that was in a new upgrade, I'm tired of paying for supposed bug-fixes
which should be free in updates, and which in reality have not been as
plentiful (at least for my normal workflow and projects) as the
publicity claims.

There has been nothing new in Finale that would make me buy an upgrade
since they introduced linked score/parts and possibly one or two
upgrades after that where they supposedly got the linked score/parts to
work better. Nowadays it's just feeding the cash cow instead of getting
real value for the money spent and I frankly can't afford that any more.

So I'm out on this upgrade, even for $99. And possibly out for all the
future ones as well.

Re: [Finale] Finale 25 Octaves

2017-04-11 Thread Chuck Israels
Hi Lawrence,

This probably has something to do with the way the new Finale handles note
entry at concert pitch instead of transposed pitch. For instance, bass violin
notes now enter at their real pitches but get written an octave higher. Kind
of confusing, but there are ways to set preferences that control this, and
there are options. I had the same experience at first, and I’m not sure what I
did to control it - away from Finale at the moment. Maybe you will get better
guidance from others.

Subject: [Finale] Finale 25 Octaves

Cheers,

Lawrence

Thank you, it's sorted now I think - it was, as several have suggested, the
default "instrument ranges" that needed to be unchecked.

Thanks,

Lawrence

Actually, I wrote my suggestion immediately after your query posted - but
for some reason, it was held up in moderation for - well, nearly a full
day! Ah well. Glad the problem was resolved, Lawrence. And now: THIS

Re: [Finale] Finale 25 - What's removed?

2016-08-16 Thread Craig Parmerlee
I just stumbled across this article that was put out about 3 weeks ago.
it seems to say these items are removed from the new version:

* Band-in-a-box auto harmonizing

* Mirror tool (i.e. ie no more mirrored measures)

* Tempo tool

* Music scanning

This sounds like a net DOWN-grade to me.

I have the pro version of SmartScan, which I can use with XML, and I
never used mirrored measures. But I use the auto-harmonizing all the
time. It is a quick way to get an arrangement up and running. My final
arrangements rarely use the notes exactly as put out by that plug-in. I
will generally scrub it to do better voice leading and improve the
harmonies (the plug-in seems to go crazy adding 6ths). But The ability
to quickly populate a soli section is valuable, IMHO.

Re: [Finale] Finale 25 - What's removed?

2016-08-16 Thread Craig Parmerlee
Yes, I believe I could keep 2014.5 installed and do the auto-harmonizing
there. But that begs the question what would be my motivation to go to
V25 if I have to bounce between apps.

In your case, this 64-bit version *MAY* resolve the speed problems you
have been having on large scores. If that is the case, then the upgrade
would be a clear winner.

There might be a time I'd want to run ReWire, but it isn't all that
likely for the kinds of projects I have been doing in Finale.

I'd appreciate hearing from anybody with the demo installed, regarding
whether the many problems with HP have been fixed.

And as of this moment, the Makenusic forum is still rejecting the IP
address from my Comcast connection (whether I use my PC or a cell phone
over WiFi on that connection. If I disable WiFi on my cell phone
(forcing it through the AT&T network, it gets to the forum OK. Seems
like a bad day to have big website problems.

And speaking of that, if you go to the Makemusic site, there is not a
single word about the new Finale version on the home page. And if you
click into the Finale section, still nothing other than a link to an
"oh by the way ..." note about the new release. I would have thought
with 2+ years to plan this release, they might have wanted to mention
SOMETHING about it.

Here’s a review. Click on Robert Puff’s link at the bottom of this review, too.
One of them ran speed tests, and Finale v. 25 is almost, but not quite, as fast
as 2012 in most things, but faster than 2014.5 in almost everything. But then,
you need Yosemite at least to run Finale v. 25.

So what happens with files that use the Mirror Tool? I used to use the
Mirror tool quite a bit, and found it very useful. the typical situation
would be a baroque piece, where 1st and 2nd violins play in unison a lot
of the time.

Yes, one could just copy the part over, but using mirrors all the
changes, corrections etc would automatically transfer to all the
mirrored parts. I wished the tool had been improved rather than dropped.

(Btw, I bought 2014.5 the day before yesterday. After the update
appeared I asked MakeMusic for a free upgrade, and within hours it came.
Thanks MM, for being cooperative and easy on this. Not every company

Hi Johannes

I would suggest that you visit finaletips.nu and download all available Jari
Plugins, as soon as they have been converted to 64-bit. I am pretty sure that
you find a comparable (and faster) tool in one of the Change Plugins.

Best
Raphael.

I have not tried upgrading files that use the Mirror Tool, but my guess is

[Finale] Finale 25: Lyrics window problem

2017-02-08 Thread Michael Withers
Dear all,

I'm hoping the corporate wisdom of this illustrious list can help with this
problem, or at least point me in the right direction

Everything has been going OK with Finale 25 since I upgraded.

Yesterday I was successfully entering lyrics in my usual way (couple of
glitches but I put that down to inaccurate fingers or me not being careful).
My usual way of working is to copy/paste lyrics into the Lyrics Window,
insert the necessary hyphenation and then click-assign the lyrics to the
score.

Today, the Lyrics Window is behaving very strangely. If I copy/paste lyrics
into the Lyrics Window and click the 'Click assign' button the lyrics I have
pasted disappear. Vanished!

If I put the lyrics in by using type-in-score then the lyrics DO appear in
the Lyrics edit window but don't seem to retain their connection to the
score, i.e. if I then make a change in the lyrics using the edit window, the
changes ARE NOT reflected in the score.

I checked the other versions of Finale that I keep installed for emergencies
(2014 and 2014.5) and they exhibit exactly the same errors.

So I tried the version of 2014 that I keep on a laptop for emergencies - and
that works just fine, exactly as expected.

I guess this means the problem is with my main PC or with something in some
software or other that has updated itself recently. Yes, I've already tried
rebooting the PC (many times!) and deleting the preferences and starting
again.

Has anyone else experienced this problem or can suggest where I could look
to find the cause?

I am on Windows 10 with an i5 processor and NVIDIA GeForce graphics card

The setup has been working fine until today and I have been working with
Finale since 1998!!

Any pointers much appreciated

Best wishes

Michael Withers

Hi Michael,

I rarely get problems like this, though I’ve heard of them. Often, hitting Undo
restores the lyrics when they disappear, I’ve been told.

My contribution is to provide you with this website, which offers automatic
hyphenation in English. Copy your lyrics into this window, hit the Hyphenate
button, then copy them back out and paste them into the Finale lyrics window.
You still have to check them (“Bless-ed” instead of “blessed”, for example) but
it saves a ton of work.

Re: [Finale] Finale 25: Lyrics window problem

2017-02-09 Thread Michael Withers
Hi John and Christopher,

Thanks for the link to the lyric hyphenator page. It's a marvellous resource
and worth sharing more widely.

Another great hyphenator is https://www.ushuaia.pl/hyphen/?ln=en. This one
works best with single words or shorter texts but has the advantage of allowing
hyphenation in many different languages.

However, marvellous as they are, they are a perfect example of my problem: I
can't use them because I can't copy/paste into the lyrics tool edit window!!

Thanks

Michael Withers

You beat me to it, Christopher! I found this page not too long ago, and use it
all the time. Very useful.

I've seen this problem, or similar, in Fin 25. Whatever causes the lyrics
disappear seems random, but usually I can restore them with Undo, provided
I go back far enough. You might also try restarting Finale or even the
computer. (I sometimes have to restart the computer for playback issues.)

But your problem sounds like a simpler issue. Are you certain that "Set
Current Lyric" is set to the same verse/chorus/section number as you are
expecting? There is some strange behavior around this feature and it is

Re: [Finale] Finale 25: Lyrics window problem

2017-02-09 Thread Michael Withers
Thanks Robert. I'll double check the 'Set current lyric' settings but I think
it's unlikely to be the cause as I have the same problem on v25 AND on 2014 and
2014.5.

I've already tried all the usual rebooting PC and restarting Finale tricks to
no avail.

Thanks anyway

Michael

Hi Robert,

Many thanks for the offer but it seems to be a general thing. I have exactly

Okay. Another idea I had is to trash your preferences. Sometimes this helps
with weird behavior, especially if it was working for a while before the

Dear all,

My lyrics problem has now righted itself - and I have no idea why it just
started working again!

HOWEVER for the record, I want to express my thanks to Michael Johnson, VP
Professional Notation at MakeMusic, who leapt straight onto the case from what
he saw on this list and has spent quite a while trying to help me get to the
bottom of the problem.

The first thing I’d check is the setting in the print dialogue for printing

I will never understand what was going on Thursday afternoon, but when I
attempted to post this bizarre behavior to the Makemusic tech people, and
was trying to find an example in old and new versions of the file in order
that they could tell the difference, the old version was no longer showing
up. All seems okay, right now, knock on wood.

Re: [Finale] Finale 25- okay, but I don't know what's going on.

2016-08-18 Thread Raymond Horton
This is Twilight Zone stuff, folks. I have installed Finale for windows 25,
seems to come up just fine. The first thing I try is the lengthy file I
earlier reported having trouble with in 2012 and 2014 .5. But, when I go to
the folder and which I keep both the mus and musx versions of this file,
the most recent versions of each file show up as being saved on July 28th!
I have made many huge changes in this file since then , even reordering the
songs. So, I close 25 , separately go into versions 2012 and 2014 .5 and
save each file again. Then I try opening from outside finale 25 by
right-clicking on the desktop itself, version 25 being an option there.
Each file version, separately, opens up in finale 25, but it is the version
from July 28th!

Right now I'm checking around the corner for Rod Serling. If anyone living
can offer help, please do!!!
