This message is from: Catherine lassesen [EMAIL PROTECTED] Michele, We use a beeper on the halter but it only tells you if the mare is down. I use cameras at night and I use good old fashion watching and knowing your mare. Ultrasound at our Vet predicted a March 31 foal for Lupin. She foaled on the 10th. I told the Vet I thought she would foal the first week of March. Each mare is different. Don't rely on your memory. Write down what you see and it will help you the next time around. Remember... when you go for a coffee or a shower, the foal will appear... (giggles) Good Luck, Catherine Lassesen Southern Oregon
Reply to Larry - new book
This message is from: Catherine lassesen [EMAIL PROTECTED] Larry, As normal the new book is in new Norwegian. My hope with the Norwegian Fjord Horse Foundation is to raise enough funds in the Educational Endowment to give a grant to have some of the books translated into English. I ask that any of you that are interested in translations of books to consider a donation to this Endowment fund. I have spoken to the authors of some of the popular books and they are willing to give permission (of course with a contact and compensation of sales) to the Foundation for translation. It is a matter of up front money to translate and then the sales of the English books would benefit the Foundation and (of course) the author. --- My dear husband did some translations of a book called Horses in Norway (for me)... if I get permission from the author... we will publish for the English speaking Fjord owners. There is great history about the horses in Norway in this book. It includes Fjords but it is not a fjord book, it is a horse book. Thanks for your question. Catherine Lassesen Hestehaven - The Horse Garden Southern Oregon Temp: 27 F Fjords are loving it. I am hating it. :-)

Gotta love them Fjords!
This message is from: Catherine lassesen [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hello. You have to love the Fjords. We were working with the farrier today. Doing 20 + horses is an all day adventure. we were in the birthing stalls. 16x16 stalls that we call The Palace. anyway. the fat chicks, my nick name for two of our mares. they came to us a bit overweight. :-) . I haltered one while the other just stood there. both wanting to have a manicure pedicure, both wanting total attention from us. The farrier and I barely made it out alive being mugged by these two loveable chubby (pregnant) mares. I had to giggle at them the entire time. Mind you the farrier is use to other breeds where it is a struggle to get them to do anything. these two mares just hung out enjoying the manicure and pedicures. and wanting more, more, more.. I am glad I met my Norwegian husband that introduced me to this breed.. :-) Catherine Lassesen Hestehaven - The Horse Garden Bed, Barn, Breakfast Baskets Southern Oregon
Rikmann is Happy with his Winner Family
This message is from: Catherine lassesen [EMAIL PROTECTED] Rikmann went to his new home on Monday! He is a happy boy. Rick Weaver of Washington State won Rikmann when Savannah pulled his ticket out of the jar on the 15th of December. We had Savannah pull two more names just in case. But Rick and his wife wanted Rikmann. Rikmann is being mothers by two other Fjord mares owned by the Weavers. He has his own turn out and stall and loved the place the minute he stepped out of the trailer. The Oregon Fjord Club was able to raise enough funds to help Savannah with some of her medical expenses and to donate a check to the Norwegian Fjord Horse Foundation Educational Endowment. Thank you for everyone that participated in the raffle. We do appreciate the donations. Merry Christmas to all! I hope Santa brings you everything you need and want. Proxy Votes and My Christmas Wish
This message is from: Catherine lassesen [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hello Everyone... This is coming from a past Director and does not reflect the BOD in anyway, shape or form... Ok... nothing stands in your way... send your proxy to whom ever you want to represent you at the Annual Meeting. Give them to the NFHR Staff member PRIOR to the meeting. Which means it must be mailed by January 5th to guarantee to be opened and accounted for. Remember it takes time to prepare for a meeting and mail all the paperwork to the host hotel. I can tell you that at the Annual Meeting... you will hear the ANNUAL REPORT and you will meet the new Board of Directors and they will talk with you. At the past 4 out of 5 meetings... NOTHING was voted on. I can also tell you that when you voted for your Board of Directors... that is when you gave your voice for the running of NFHR. You should use your voice with the BOD of your choice and that is more effective than giving a proxy for a non voting meeting. Please learn the system we have. Just because other organizations are now sending out proxy votes because of bylaws changes does not mean we have to... Until our system is changed to accommodate members actually meeting and doing committee work at an annual gathering... (like AQHA or APHA or other groups) we are stuck in a system that does not give much to the Annual Meeting other than satisfying corporate law in the state we are registered in. As much as I like this list, it is really a downer. I stayed on it only to help clarify the misconceptions of the running of NFHR and find that the tone of this list gets bitter each day. There is no let up... there is no satisfaction for some. I cannot imagine what the other list is like... Bitch sessions are not my thing. As I have always said... join the BOD and help change it if you are not happy with the process. Sitting around with an open mouth only irritates you and those around you. I have to reflect to who is on this list... new Fjord Owners with bright eyes and big dreams of having their first Fjord... do they need to read constant bitterness?... International Fjord owners that look to this list for American news and all they get are negative in fighting... Older Fjord owners that want to just enjoy the fellowship... And some BOD members that really do want to help... yet every step they take they get pushed into a brick wall by negativity. MY CHRISTMAS WISH... is that the negative hearts will turn into positive hearts... that we can be happy in our fellowship of Fjords and learn to appreciate differences with a kinder positive heart. My wish is for those that open a mouth... they actually do more than that, that they research and provide professional written documents to our leaders as how to structurally change our organization for the better. That they communicate to the Directors directly with their concerns and not to our fellowship which is made up of International Fjord owners, new owners and some of us that want to just enjoy the day to day love for our Fjords. My wish is for a good healthy and happy 25th Anniversary year for NFHR and all its members. That we can come together in Libby, Blue Earth, Woodstock, the West Coast and at our special gathering in October in MN for great fellowship, laughter and fun with our Fjords. Over all My wish is for lighter more positive hearts... in our Fjord fellowship. Merry Christmas to you all. Catherine Lassesen Southern Oregon

Foundations
This message is from: Catherine lassesen [EMAIL PROTECTED] Carol, Again I will try to reply to your questions. 1. Will the books be open to NFHR members. I am assuming you are referring to the financial books since your second question is on finance. The financial situation of the Foundation must be made public by law. To have a NFHR member go over the computer programs is not likely. but donors have the right to know where the money is being spent on. And thus end of the year financial statements will be available to donors (remember NFHR members are different than donors) and the public per US law. (I am not the legal advisor here, so I do not know what our legal requirement is in this aspect.) 2. Will there be a financial statement published yearly, or is the Foundation not obligated to do this by virtue of being a private group?-- We are not required to publish in the Fjord Herald. The Foundation is obligated to report annual to the major donors and to the US government. If we can make arrangements for the FH to be an outlet we may publish there. We are discussing now which means for us to take. 3. Will the NFHR membership know how much money is in the foundation and what it's currently being spent on? This question is answered above. Financial statements are required by law. 4. You say money will be available for research pertaining to the Fjordhorse. -- Can you tell us if there's some specific type of research in mind? - Carol, now you are putting the cart before the horse. Funds are needed prior to giving any money to research. GRANTS will be given once funding is available. A GRANT must be applied for. There are rules and regulations as to grants and the application for and the receiving of. It really depends on the schools and the researchers. It also depends on what is going on at the time we have the funds available. Do you have an Issue you want researched? If so tell the Foundation. We cannot issue a grant until funding is in place. So it is a catch 22. 5. *** When the last Herald's article mentioned one of the goals being Marketing, I naturally thought it meant . . marketing Fjordhorses, meaning advertising. -- You say it means marketing the Foundation. -- Fine! But, I think that marketing anything to do with Fjordhorses will attract people interested in owning a Fjordhrose, and I'm wondering how those inquiries might be handled. As secretary of the Foundation, If and when I receive an inquiry for the Fjord horse in general that person will be referred to NFHR and NHFR will send out the informational packet to that person. Where the Foundation can come in handy (I mention can because funding is the main key to any project.) , is that the Foundation can provide the NFHR with GRANTS to publish an educational printed material that can go into the packet that NFHR gives out. Thus is a long and round about way the Foundation is marketing. but not really. Again, there are rules and regulations and laws that govern Foundations. Of course if anyone asks the Foundation, a Foundation brochure will be sent also. (Please do not ask for one yet, we are developing it and waiting for funding to publish it.) Not one Trustee is benefiting from the Foundation. No one is being PAID, all staff is volunteer. We are not out to market our horses. NONE of us have that in mind. We want to see the Fjord world expand and do more. A Foundation is one tool to do just that. We are looking globally not locally. 6. If the Fjord Foundation is an organization that is going to promote and protect, and do good things for the Fjordhorse, then, of course, I'm all for it. -- I've asked these questions because Beaver Dam Farm is in the business of Fjordhorses. We have a full-time staff, and those people as well as Arthur and I make our living breeding, training, importing, buying, and selling Fjordhorses. -- All of us here have a need to know what's happening in the Fjord world, and rightly or wrongly, I did not feel that the two articles published in the Herald contained enough information for us to form a considered opinion on the Fjord Foundation. Carol, what can I say? I am an amateur writer. I am a professional horse woman. I try hard when sending articles into the Fjord Herald to be accurate and tell as much as I can in the limited words that we have to send in an article. Very large books are written on Foundations. There is no way I can cover the entire subject in articles. We have to assume that the reader knows something about Foundation and in particular equine Foundations. Your best bet is to look at the other equine Foundations in this world. APHA, AQHA, US Equestrians, Vaulting, every college and university has a Foundation. Look to them and get to know what a Foundation is. Then it may help you in understanding why. The Foundation our Trustees have nothing to hide. We are trying
Foundation questions - one more time - sorry extremely long
This message is from: Catherine lassesen [EMAIL PROTECTED] Carol, I was in the middle of a reply when my computer zipped... Not sure where the email went. I shall try to reply to all your questions. 1. Charles Kelly Jr. is a US lawyer that is a Fjord owner and NFHR member who has volunteered his expertise to the group of founders so that we can start the Foundation off correctly. 2. By US law, the Foundation must be independent from the NFHR. Yes some people wear two hats, but the Foundation is a 501 (c) 3 corporation and the NFHR is not. Donations to the Foundation are deductible to US Tax payers. Donations to the NFHR are not. 3. Some of the Foundation's goals are similar to the those of the NFHR. The Foundation can help take some of the burden of publishing educational materials through grants issued by the Foundation thus letting up on the obligation of membership dues for another NFHR adventure. 4. Trustees and Officers of the Foundation are as follows. Ann Appleby, Howard Fielder, Brian Jensen, Chuck Kelly, Joan Kemp, Alan Merrill, Mark McGinley, Phil Odden, Fred Brandt, Neil Sorum and myself (Catherine Lassesen). *5. How does it plan to promote purity? By education 6. How does it plan to promote the history of the breed? -- Will it advertise? By educational publications and by translation of Norwegian publication to English and making the publications available for purchase. Advertising is not a priority with the Foundation at this time. 7. I'm particularly curious about supporting research - What does this mean? There are many factors in the Norwegian Fjord Horse breed that are not found in other breeds. When funding is available, grants for researchers (vet) can be applied for. 8. The Foundation says they are currently working towards establishing tight mission and vision statement -- Shouldn't they know what their mission and vision is BEFORE asking for money? Carol, we know what the mission and what our vision are. We have known that for a long time. To publish a piece of work or a statement that will be our statement for years to come needs to be review and tightening up. 9. The Foundation also says their current work is setting short and long-term goals -- Again, shouldn't these goals be set BEFORE asking for money? -- I would hope that nobody would consider donating their assets BEFORE this Foundation sets its goals. Carol, the Foundation does have goals in place. One does have to remember that it takes 3 months to produce a Fjord Herald and articles must be in way in advance. Also, that article was written as a general information article. 10. They also say that their current work is IMPLEMENTING MARKETING -- Hmmm! What does this mean? -- Pardon me for being cynical, but when everybody in this Foundation group is a breeder with horses to sell, I just wonder . . . . The purpose of advertising is to attract customers. -- I would like to know exactly to whom these attracted customers will be responding? Carol, (now really... I am getting to think you do not know what a Foundation is.) NONE of the Trustees or Officers has promotion their FARM in mind. You do not know the individuals involved and you have insulted us with this statement. Marketing was used in reference to marketing the Foundation, not horses. (or farms or people owning the horses or farms) 11. Is anyone else out there in Fjord Digest land curious about this new Fjord entity . . The Foundation? -- Does anybody else find it strange that a Foundation asking for very large charitable donations should be set up by officers of the NFHR, and should be claiming that it is an indenpendent organization from the NFHR? When we established the Foundation in December 2004, I was going off the BOD. Neil Sorum is coming off this December. Mark McGinley has ran for another term, I am not sure if he has won the election or not but it is not unusual for 1-3 trustees to have ties to other organizations. We are three individuals that felt that a Foundation was needed and we gathered to talk about it while on the BOD. That is how some Foundations start. (People with common thoughts and goals.) 12. Is anybody else skeptical that these NFHR officers who are all breeders and have horses to sell, as well as the other Foundation members who are breeders are going to be benfiting from the Foundation's advertising??? Trust me Carol, My business is not benefiting from the Foundation or from the work I do with the Foundation. My farm is actually is suffering because I am giving the Foundation more of my time. As far as the membership of the trustees... we have a wide variety of experience on the trustee list. None of us looked for breeding or ownership of Fjords but the willingness to serve and the knowledge of what it would take to be a Foundation Trustee and how to establish
ELECTION PROCESS
This message is from: Catherine lassesen [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hello EVERYONE! Here is the procedure for the election. (This is from my experience on this BOD and other BODs) 1. People run for the 3 positions. 2. Members vote 3. The elections committee counts and verifies the election. (at the correct time) 4. The top 3 total vote getters are contacted and told that they have received the position on the BOD. If at that time they (one of the top 3 persons) do not accept the position, then the Elections Committee names the next vote getter (the 4th person) in that position. The BOD does not get the results of the election until Elections Committee verifies and all three candidates are told and accept the position. The BOD then certifies the election and the 3 new BOD members are installed at the F2F meeting in January. There is no need to hold a special election or to stop the one in the process. Who is to say the person that announced that they will not take the position will win the top 3 votes? If you are interested in any amount over 100 please contact me directly and OFC will give you even more of a discount on these cards. We printed up 250 sets. Please consider purchasing at least one set this year... All funds go into the club account and then to Savannah's medical fund account at Umpqua Bank in Canyonville. If you want to make a direct donation to her fund, I can give you the account number for a direct transfer. Other than that, a check made out to Oregon Fjord Club and sent to our treasurer is fine. But there is a cure for an accident if one occurs. It is best to prevent an accident then to cure one. Talk to your local vet about methods if your mares are exposed to the wrong stallion. I would be sure to place very HOT WIRE up. Mares can convince even the best well trained stallions to jump, hop and skip over good fencing. :-) Now... go get er dun! Savannah Home :-) / Raffle Help PLEASE
This message is from: Catherine lassesen [EMAIL PROTECTED] For those of you that have been following the story of Savannah Hardekopf and her car accident. She is home now. 35 days after her accident. Savannah broke the exact same bones in her neck as CHRISTOPHER REEVES. She is alive and she will be able to walk again. She is a miracle kid. Her pelvis was pinned in 11 places and that is what prevents her from walking at this point. Long story shorten for those that did not get the first part. Savannah is an Oregon Fjord Club member. She was riding Fjords at my farm. Her plan was to perform vaulting with 2 other friends for our 2006 Expo in Albany, OR in March 06. On 8-7-2005 she was in a car accident. The car landed on her and crushed her pelvis, neck, broke her jaw, lacerated her liver, damaged her spleen, and so on. She should have been dead. The doctors say she is 1 out of 50 Million to survive this type of injuries. she is 1 out of 50 million to be able to walk again. Anyway. she is now home in a wheel chair and going back to school. Savannah is determined to graduate on time and to go to VET School. This is where you come in. We (Oregon Fjord Club) established a medical fund / college fund. this fund is to help pay the hundred of thousands of dollars of medical bills her family is occurring. If and I say IF there is anything left over, it will go to her college education (VET SCHOOL). We have been selling raffle tickets for a yearling gelding at $5.00 each or 6 for $25.00. We need your help in selling more to make our goal to help Savannah. On 8-1-2005 we sent out letters with our goal to raise money for the club and the NFH Foundation. We still will give money to both these endeavors however; we want to be able to give some money to the medical fund. I know with your help we can do all three. If you are willing to help us we do appreciate it. You may contact Amy Evers at fjordAmy @ aol.com (no spaces) or me at lassesen @ citlink.net . We can set you up with some posters and tickets to sell. The gelding is a very nice put together colt. He is out of my mare Lupin who is very performance talented and the full brother to our stallion. The person that wins this gelding will be VERY HAPPY. He is quality in every sense of the word. I am not as good as others in fluffing up my breeding talents. but this colt will place well in conformation and in performance once trained. He is just a yearling and he does anything I ask him to do as a yearling. Thank you for your time. Foal Give a way and Savannah
This message is from: Catherine lassesen [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hello All, Thank you to all of you that have purchased tickets for our Foal Giveaway. All the funds go toward the three endeavors listed below. 1. Oregon Fjord Club Expo Fund 2. Savannah's Medical Fund 3. Norwegian Fjord Horse Foundation Educational Endowment If you have not considered this fund raiser... it is our only fundraiser for the EXPO FUND. For 6 years going to Albany, OR EXPO came out of private pockets. The Expo has become very expensive and we hope to raise enough to pay the entrance fees and part of the decorations for this event. We had also hoped to go to the EXPO in Sacramento, CA in June. This all depends on this one fundraiser... Any extra money raised will go to Savannah (16 year old OFC Member that got into a very bad car accident 7 days after we kicked off this Foal Giveaway fund raiser.) Savannah is now awake and CAN move her toes and her fingers... According to the Drs... She should not even be alive... She CRUSHED 4 vertebrae, her pelvis, lacerated her liver, broke her jaw, and damaged her spleen. SO any help in raising money for her medical and recovery bills would be appreciated. Then ... we also want to support the newly organized FOUNDATION... for Norwegian Fjord Horses. Our first hope is to give a thousand dollars to the Educational Endowment. This would help NFHR put on much needed CLINICS and Educational events. Please won't you consider... You may even win a Fjord colt that if he were sold to a private party would be sold at no less than $5500... Championship performance bloodlines both sire and dam are evaluated. Both perform well in OPEN shows and Fjord shows. The last time I took Blaamann to Libby. MT. We placed first and second in most of his classes... The last time Lupin was shown was 3 months after she gave birth to Rikmann and she placed very well in OPEN classes. Many 2nd places out of 11+ entries. Lupin just was awarded her NFHR Award of Excellence Award. Grab that envelope that OFC sent you and send in your tickets stubs... (If you did not get a letter form us and want one, please email me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] and I will send you one.) Thanks, Catherine Lassesen PS If you cannot afford to do so... would you be so kind as to ask a neighbor or friend and sell them for us?
Elections Nominations
This message is from: Catherine lassesen [EMAIL PROTECTED] I beg your pardon. Nominations for the Board of Directors Elections have been mentioned in every issue of the Fjord Herald. In the Spring Issue it is on page 42. This is a DEADLINE LIST that has been published in each issue for at least one year. I do agree that there is not a full page colored eye grabbing article or ad in the Fjord Herald, but the mention and the deadline for nominations has been in each issue. Not to mention that each year on this list we have mentioned the deadlines and encouraged all members to put their name in the hat. If you are at all interested in what goes on with the NFHR, NOW is the time to nominate yourself. Contact Roger Cabic at [EMAIL PROTECTED] and send him a one page resume. You are required to be a NFHR dues paying member for at least two (2) years. Catherine Lassesen Hestehaven - The Horse Garden Bed, Barn, Breakfast Baskets Southern Oregon
MT Requirements
This message is from: Catherine lassesen [EMAIL PROTECTED] According to Montana authorities, a CVI (certificate of veterinary inspection) must be issued within THIRTY DAYS OF ANY HORSE ENTERING MONTANA. --- This above requirement has always been in effect. For first time Libby goers... you are also required to get a PERMIT NUMBER TO ENTER. Your Vet would know how to get this number. This regulation has also been in effect as long as we have attended the Libby show. Sadly, our farm cannot attend (VS or not). We are swamped with new projects and way too many things to do. Libby has always been our vacation but this year we cannot afford to take the time off. We hope for next year. Good luck to everyone attending, we know you will have FUN... (Libby is always so much fun.) --- If anyone is interested in parades and wagon trains, Canyonville's Pioneer Days is August 25 - 28. It is a fun time for all. The Parade is on Saturday at 9 AM. The Wagon Train is on Thursday ... we arrive at the Pioneer Park at 4:45PM for the opening ceremonies. --- Have you Hugged your Fjord Lately? Catherine Lassesen Hestehaven - The Horse Garden

This message is from: Catherine lassesen [EMAIL PROTECTED] Milli Ann, We use the Norwegian Harness. I like it. The tough part is arranging to fit it to your carts, wagons. Breeding Quality
This message is from: Catherine lassesen [EMAIL PROTECTED] It is always interesting to read the comments about breeding. The true impact of breeding in our breed is those that breed more than 1 - 2 mares a year. When Rune and I first became involved and started breeding FJORD horses. I felt we had a small farm. We were told that we were one of the largest breeding farms in the USA, I was in shock. We only bred 10 mares. I do not feel that we will have genetic overlapping problems with the Norwegian Fjord Horses in the USA. When the most a stallion is breeding is 10 to 20 mares a year... and the fact that we have 1363 registered (or noted) stallions in NFHR. (only 115 stallions reported to breed last year alone) Out of those 115 only 31 have an AI License. I do not know how many mares the luckiest stallion was able to breed last year but I would guess maybe 20. (Mike May do you have the figures on this?) How can we even theorize about over usage of a stallion when we do not have stallions that are covering 50% or more of the mares? I do not even think we have a stallion on record that is covering 10% of the mares... But Mike May will be able to answer that. As far as picking the best stallion for your mare... All mare owners of any breed wants to do that. BUT...Do they do it?... No... at least not all the time. What factors are taken in to consideration? Price (breed fee, mare care, vet fees, AI fees) Distance Transportation Bloodlines Temperament Conformation Unfortunately it is not a perfect world and we can not always breed to the stallion we would like to and therefore you breed to the best stallion of easiest convenience. SAD TO SAY... that is the market. Evaluation score do help in trying to sell you stallion to a mare owner or better yet Evaluation scores help in selling your young stock. They in no way HARM a breed program and they in no way HARM our breed in any way. I have always introduced myself as a horse person first that married a Norwegian that then FOUND the Fjord breed to be very acceptable in our life style. Thus we switched over from AQHA, APHA breeding to Fjord only breeding. The knowledge in the years of breeding AQHA APHA horses help tremendously in selecting our first mare and so on. Rune tells the story of how I found much prettier mares at the McCarthy Farm... but I kept going back to our Belle, Belle... for her colt that was on her side was outstanding... Each mare had a foal on their side... each with the same stallion... but the big difference about BELLE was that her colt was an improvement on her and the stallion. THAT is WHAT BREEDING is ALL ABOUT... to improve on what you have... Arguments on both sides have their points... but as a horse breeder and now for a solid 10 years being a Fjord breeder... I believe that education thru the NFHR Evaluations, conformation clinics, performance testing for temperament and movement, International testing and FHI standards will only BENEFIT our organization and breed. Thus my 2 cents... Have you hugged your Fjord today! Going out to hug all 24 of ours... Catherine Lassesen

misunderstanding ? Evaluations
This message is from: Catherine lassesen [EMAIL PROTECTED] Ruthie, I am afraid that you misunderstood what I meant by selecting a stallion from The Record Book. The Record Book now gives a mare owner the material in their hands to evaluate the right stallion for their particular mare. Breeding is finding the right MATCH... I breed to other stallion with our mares because I am looking for the right MATCH for my mares. I want IMPROVEMENT from my breeding. I want to take two Reds and make a Blue and I have done just that with our breed program here at our farm. I did not say that EVERYONE should breed to Blue stallions... I am saying that now that scores on some of the stallions registered in the registry are public, the pubic can be more educated in selecting a stallion for their mare. There may be better stallions out there but until the owners get them evaluated, the public can only go by their own knowledge. The Record Book is just one more TOOL to help the mare owner decide on a date for their mare. As I have spoken before and have written about in articles. If a stallion has a weak hind end you do not want to breed your mare to him if she has a weak hind end also. It is all about making the right match and The Record Book is a great way to begin your research. Going out to play with Fjordees, Catherine Lassesen Hestehaven = The Horse Garden Where we are enjoying our great Fjords... pairs, 4 up and foal training... never a dull day never the same day twice. Gotta love it.

Variety Replies
This message is from: Catherine lassesen [EMAIL PROTECTED] LOGO: The contest ends today and then the BOD will select the top 2-3 and submit them to the FH for members to see and vote on. Read the Winter Issue. The deadline was extended due to the New Editor not making her deadline. I was assigned to collect the logos, scan them and send them on to the BOD where they will take over and decide which ones will go on to be shown to the members. Breeding: Regumate and Lutalyse act the same with Fjords Mares as with AQHA APHA mares. The big difference in breeding Fjords is the size of the follicle. Fjords tend to have VERY LARGE follicles. 65mm is not unusual. Café Press: We have designs there with Fjord items on them. We change almost monthly. Check us out. 4th of July: We are out of town doing a 4th of July parade in CA. Always fun to show off the Fjord. We will get more hours for out stepping Out Award with NFHR. 500 hours is the first level... we are almost there... Wishing you all the best this holiday and be safe. Filly for sale
This message is from: Catherine lassesen [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hello All, Hope your summer is going well. Here is the story! Quinde (solid 2 year old) is for sale. Asking $4500.00 but will consider all cash offers at this time. Sire: Blaamann S3 G3(Blue Man) (Sven 127-B 3 pr. x Belle C-714 S3) Gromar, Gramann, Gjestar Bloodlines Dam: Korlina aka Bananas (Kinnikinnick C-45 x Pera C-15) Imprinted, clips, bathes, feet for farrier is good, halters, leads, ponies, hauls in trailer... all basic 2 year old stuff. Quinde was purchased from our farm as a weanling. Basically out to pasture and a pet for the children during the summer. She will be started with harness work this summer until sold. She is at our facility right now. We are not charging the owner for helping in selling this filly. The gal (Cheri) who owns her made the choice to sell her due to several reasons but the main one is that her husband was given a time line by the Doctors. (Hmmm, We really will not listen to the Drs and he will out live them... But...) Cheri needs the cash to help out with medical and other bills. So... she is offering her filly for sale. Please contact me directly for the gals phone number. Thanks for reading this. Catherine Lassesen [EMAIL PROTECTED] 541-825-3027

Giggle form Warren Evaluation Off Spring
This message is from: Catherine lassesen [EMAIL PROTECTED] And I have her permission to agree. warren Spokane WA I laughed so hard when I read this... THANKS for the HUMOR... We think your little boy will grow up to be a great stallion one day. Give him time... Your top mare will keep his jets cooler and teach him manners... Not a bad thing... As long as he learns to go away when she wants him to he will be fine with the ladies out to pasture. Lynda... Off Spring Subject and Evaluations... there is an award for the mare and stallion who produce good quality performing offspring in the American system. They must have a certain number of off spring that have been evaluated and they must earn a medallion. Thus they must have a red or blue in conformation as well. For the details go to the www.nfhr.com website and check out the rules. I do not have the rules in front of me and my memory is not good enough to quote them. However...I do agree that we need to look at what they produce... One reason why we did not geld our stallion was that he has produced blue off spring when he is only a red on the score sheet. Must cook dinner... the farrier was out all day... getting ready for a very busy season with our calendar fully booked. We are excited to be able to meet many new people this summer and to have many old friends back also... Talk soon, Catherine Lassesen Southern Oregon Bed Barn

A FOAL IS BORN
This message is from: Catherine lassesen [EMAIL PROTECTED] Brigid - YES... I met Mike at the EXPO in Grants Pass... you know our equine world is very small... :-) Linda, I had a wonderful time with your visit... specially the stories of Hugin. Finally, our mare Korlina foaled out last night. Not that she was late... It is just the past few years she had fillies so they were always on time... this one is a colt and he came healthy but 5 days later than his sisters... :-) We have not named him yet but he is a tall beautiful boy. Mama is doing fine. This is number 15 for her... She is now 21 years old and is in wonderful shape. I will have photos up tonight after the Foundation meeting at www.hestehaven.com which is the one page website that I do myself... that is why it is only one page... 2 grey mares
This message is from: Catherine lassesen [EMAIL PROTECTED] Lisa,,, Yah you talked me out of one of them... and the Pugh talked me out of the other one. :-) When I picked them up, they were not trained for driving. We did the training for driving both single and team with help from dear Frank Hannesschlager. Rune and Frank would take this team and drive them all over our property and connecting lands. Rune was not in favor of keeping them for they were a forward team and he likes and wants more farm teams. (Slow and steady) They produced good off spring and we did get them NFHR Evaluated. Karimill went to the Pugh family and Kariya went on a lease to Lisa and never came home. :-) They booth have good homes and are enjoying life. We are happy for that. This message is from: Catherine lassesen [EMAIL PROTECTED] Ruthie, By placing the minutes on the website they are published. However, I believe the action items will continue to be provided in print through the Fjord Herald. If you look at AQHA and other Equine groups, they do not publish their minutes; they only publish the major rule changes. :-) Attitude is everything Catherine Lassesen Hestehaven - The Horse Garden Bed, Barn, Breakfast Baskets Southern Oregon
Foundation
This message is from: Catherine lassesen [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hello All. This is an article going in the FH. However, some of you do not get the FH and we wanted to inform you of the Foundation work as it moves forward. - Catherine Lassesen Norwegian Fjord Horse Foundation By Catherine Lassesen On November 22, 2004 at 2:49 PM the Norwegian Fjord Horse Foundation was incorporated in the state of Iowa. Charles Kelly, Jr. filled the necessary paperwork to bring a dream into reality. Neil Sorum, NFHR President was the first donor to the Fjord Foundation thus setting the stage for a great start. At the time of incorporation, Neil Sorum, President of NFHR, Mark McGinley, Vice President of NFHR and Catherine Lassesen, Secretary of NFHR were named as the founding members of the corporation. These individuals were named on the special committee by the 2004 NFHR Directors to investigate and establish the Foundation. At the first meeting, Charles Kelly, Jr. was added as a director and the board of four discussed the plans for the Fjord Foundation. The corporation was established exclusively for the purpose of: promoting the Norwegian Fjord Horse breed; to preserve the purity and the history of the breed; to provide education in regards to the Norwegian Fjord Horse; to support research of the Norwegian Fjord Horse; and for such other nonprofit purposes set forth by Internal Revenue Code. The seed for the Foundation started in 1999, when Catherine as a freshman NFHR Director found out that we did not have an avenue for educational donations within the NFHR framework. With more time and experience on the NFHR Board of Directors, Catherine was able to collect data and support for the Fjord Foundation. The real break through came when Neil Sorum was named President of NFHR in 2004 and one of his projects became the establishment of the Foundation. Neil prepared a Power Point presentation at the 2004 Face-to-face NFHR Board of Directors meeting. His presentation impressed the members of the NFHR Board and they voted to establish the special committee of three. (Neil, Mark and Catherine) At the first two teleconference meetings for the Fjord Foundation, it was decided to have no more than 11 working trustees for the Foundation. The current Foundation Trustees are Ann Appleby, Fred Brandt, Howard Fiedler, Brian Jensen, Chuck Kelly, Catherine Lassesen, Mark McGinley, Phil Odden and Neil Sorum. These individuals agreed to serve on the Foundation and to help establish a strong organizational plan for this new identity in the Norwegian Fjord Horse world. By its very nature of incorporation, The Norwegian Fjord Horse Foundation is an independent organization from the Norwegian Fjord Horse Registry, though the plan is to work hand in hand with each other for the benefit of the Norwegian Fjord Horse. Current work for the Fjord Foundation is the establishment of a tight mission and vision statements establish marketing, organizational, investment and funding plans, to set short and long term goals and to create a donor base. Donations of stocks, bonds, gifts in kind, real estate, planned giving, memorial, honorarium and endowments will all be considered by the Fjord Foundation. It is the wish of the current trustees to establish a fund to help underwrite educational seminars at annual meetings. However, before such grants can be given out, the funding needs to be in place. This is where you as a NFHR member and Norwegian Fjord Horse enthusiast can help. The Fjord Foundation is accepting donations for an endowment fund. The next time you want to honor a fellow equestrian, friend, or special pet, please consider sending a donation to the Fjord Foundation. The Foundation will send a note to the honoree on your behalf telling them of your generosity and your generous donation will help in the establishment of this educational endowment to help generations of Norwegian Fjord lovers to come. For more information and to donate to the Norwegian Fjord Horse Foundation, write to Neil Sorum - Trustee and Treasurer Norwegian Fjord Horse Foundation, c/o Sorum Fjord Horse Farm, 2259 N. State Rte. 48, Lebanon, OH 45036-1139. Please make all checks out to Norwegian Fjord Horse Foundation. All donations are tax deductible to the full extent of the law. Be sure to check with your personal tax consultant as to how your donation applies to you and your situation. Please be sure to place in your letter your full mailing information so that can be sure to send you a year end receipt. If you are donating in honor or in memorial, please let the Fjord Foundation know how to contact the person(s) you are honoring. Thank you for reading this article. - CL
NW EXPO Such
This message is from: Catherine lassesen [EMAIL PROTECTED] Just back form the NW EXPO where Fjords were highlighted. Great time there... thanks to all the people that came up and said hello to us. Many Fjord owners that were not NFHR Members... I hope they all will join up for the Fjord Herald and other such benefits... They were told about this list and hopefully will join in also... Fjords were highlighted in the Friday evening show as props for ski racing and jumping... The crowd loves it... The show is done by invitation only and for the past 6 years the Fjords have been part of it. This year our stall decorations were the best... but the judges did not think so. We received 3rd place but most of the crowd said that we should have gotten 1st. Oh well... Next year we are already planning... The TN Walking Horse group has challenged us and we will be there to fight them on. (It is a few years in the joke department... we are good friends but have a contest for the stall decoration contest...) It should be exciting and fun to see so if you are in the area of Albany, OR in March 2006... Be sure to plan to come to the NW Horse Fair Expo... Other news. On the home front, we have 1 mare due to foal out. The other mares were sold due to changing our farm's direction in breeding and such. We are making room for trained geldings for public trail rides and wagon rides. We have a special gelding for sale that did not meet our requirements. He needs a good home and someone that knows how to handle special horses. Please contact us directly. He is not for the beginner by all means. He has been trained for team and riding but he has trust issues. For the right person, we will sell him at a good price. BB Our BB is booking fast, if you plan on traveling to Oregon and need a barn for an overnight or for a day to a week. check us out. We customize your stay to your needs. Bring your Fjord or borrow one of ours. Lessons given at all levels and disciplines. We will have a special trainer coming this summer. Rune will be home so there will be great BBQs. The TN Walking Horse club is actually coming out for a group outing and BBQ. Ok you are caught up with all my gossip. It does get quiet once you are off the board, but the BOD does get the minutes on the Website fast. That is where you can read the news until the next issue of the FH comes out. STUBBORN ?
This message is from: Catherine lassesen [EMAIL PROTECTED] Laura and all, Next time someone mentions that our very smart Fjords are stubborn, tell them it is not stubbornness, but intelligence that make them ask the questions Do you really want me to do this?, and Why? I find that it is the lack of intelligence of the horse person not the horse when they call any type of horse stubborn. You cannot put a square peg in a round hole. Fjords are not Lippizaners and thus will not act or work the same. (of course you know this and you are the smart one that owns the Fjord.) One of the worst things that have happen thru the years is that Fjords were not trained properly to begin with. So there are many older Fjords that are broke but don't do many simple skills at beginning levels. There is trained and then there is trained. --- A STORY... One of my favorite stories is that of a Fjord breeder. The breeder had a herd of Fjords and was selling them out of the field. When asked if they drove, this person answered yes, when asked if they rode, this person said yes. Then the buyer would pick out a fjord and test ride and or drive the fjord. Well, the test was done in a small arena and the fjord did fairly well at the drive test and ride test, the buyer bought the fjord and took it home. I have heard that the seller mentioned to another person the next day... the fjord that was chosen and sold had never been ridden nor driven until the day the seller sold it. I heard this story form more than one buyer from this seller... Thus I feel that there have been many fjords sold that were not trained properly prior to being passed on to another owner. :-) --- I have also noticed that once we started having professional horsemen and women enter our fjord world in North America, that we have started to see fjord excel at all levels of training and disciplines. Fjords are being noticed as SMART and GOOD at all gaits. It will take time to remove past first impressions in the horse industry about our wonderful Fjords. Keep up the good work! RE: fjordhorse-digest V2005 #50
This message is from: Catherine lassesen [EMAIL PROTECTED] Good for you Kathy! I hope you enjoy your filly. if he cannot behave SIDE by SIDE in metal barred stalls with other stallions. They will get a 0 in stall behavior and will be asked to leave within the first 1-2 days. The stallion I observed in Turlock all those years ago, would not have qualified in the stall behaving category. The Norwegian judges would not have gone further. MORAL: TRAIN your stallion and handle your stallion from day ONE. If you think your colt will be your future man of the house then you MUST have control of him. He must be able to realize that when he is working he is to BEHAVE. I do have to agree with Karen Mc. To a point, training and handling has a lot to do with it. Our boy is a puppy dog once with humans, but he is a total stallion when he is with his herd. Yes Herd, he has always been turned out with geldings, mares and foals... Only a few he has had problems with other than those few, they act and live as a herd most of the year. It helps him stay cool and collected. We have had him out with other stallions... after they decided who is top dog they are fine. --- At our farm we prefer temperament first. We think we do a good job with our breeding program. So far, all Blue or very high Reds in conformation and all that we have show performance wise has placed with medallions. We strive for balance in a foal. Ok time to play with the horses and get off this time sucker of mine... (lol) Catherine Lassesen Hestehaven - The Horse Garden Bed, Barn, Breakfast Baskets Southern Oregon
RE: fjordhorse-digest V2005 #49
This message is from: Catherine lassesen [EMAIL PROTECTED] Gail, It is hard to say but I would not rule out that he was born with it. I have seen other stallions that are BLUE in conformation in North America that I would not breed to due to their mind. Some are handled daily and never get better. He had to be locked up in a stall. Most of the other stallions I have seen had top doors open during the day and locked up at night only. Some stallions are good stallions with their handlers and then when it comes to breeding, they are nasty fellows... (I don't like that either) We gelded one because he raped his mares. Christian from what I understand is a nice fellow. However, I only saw him once. According to what I hear e is well behaved and respects his handlers. Rabies in Mass
This message is from: Catherine lassesen [EMAIL PROTECTED] Below is from my ATAA newsletter --- RABIES, CANINE - USA (MASSACHUSETTS: CAPE COD) Date: 22 Feb 2005 Source: Cape Cod Times, 18 Feb 2005 http://www.capecodonline.com/cctimes/bittenx18.htm Bitten by rabid coyote Dressed only in underwear and a T-shirt, a man rescued his wife from the jaws of a rabid coyote that attacked her in their back yard yesterday, clubbing it with a piece of lumber. The woman, aged 44, was bitten on the left hand by a 45 pound female coyote at about 7 a.m. as she tried to shoo it away from her dog. The dog was tethered to a run in the back yard of the residence. The victim's husband beat the coyote down with a 2-by-2, and police later killed it. The victim is believed to be the 1st person ever attacked by a rabid coyote in Massachusetts and only the second person ever attacked by a coyote in the state, according to state wildlife officials. The only other recorded attack on a human by a coyote also occurred on Cape Cod. In 1998, a coyote snatched a 3 year old boy from a swing set in Sandwich. His mother intervened and the boy was not badly injured. The victim was treated at Cape Cod Hospital and released before noon. Doctors gave her tetanus shots and started a regimen of rabies vaccinations, [presumably this waspost-exposure prophylaxis - Mod.TG] although they did not know then that the animal was rabid. Last night, after the state health department diagnosed the coyote as rabid, the victim's husband said doctors told his wife she would need additional shots over the next 28 days. A Barnstable Animal Control Officer retrieved the coyote's carcass, and prepared it for rabies testing at a state lab in Boston. Biologists interviewed yesterday said coyotes can carry rabies, but rarely do. From 1992 to 2002, only 6 of 65 coyotes tested for rabies in the state registered positive, according to Tom O'Shea of MassWildLife, a division of the state Division of Fisheries and Wildlife. Coyote sightings have become common throughout Massachusetts in recent years, coinciding with growing reports of disappearing cats, dogs, and, in at least one case, turkeys. But biologists do not have any reliable population estimates, or evidence of a population explosion, they said yesterday. Coyotes tend to move in packs of 3 or 4 and occupy a territory of 5 to 10 square miles, according to Jonathan Way, a Boston College doctoral candidate who tracks coyotes on the Cape. Way said housing developments in once-wild areas have brought people and wildlife, including coyotes, closer together. The Cape is pretty much saturated with coyotes, he said. The key is to learn how to avoid interaction. The victim said coyotes are a common sight in her neighborhood, which borders several acres of undeveloped water department land, but none has ever menaced her or her family until yesterday. Neighborhood pets are another matter. The victim's husband stated he believed his was the only cat left in the neighborhood. The victim's dog was taken to the veterinarian later in the afternoon yesterday. The veterinarian said the dog showed no signs of puncture wounds, but suffered a sprained leg. [Hopefully the dog was vaccinated against rabies. The veterinarian should have re-vaccinated the dog - Mod.TG] Catherine Lassesen Hestehaven - The Horse Garden Bed, Barn, Breakfast Baskets Southern Oregon

Bud Evers Service
This message is from: Catherine lassesen [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hello Everyone, I just returned from Redmond, OR where I attended Bud Evers' service. The whole family was very grateful for all the notes, cards, flowers and love that you shared with them during this rough time in their lives. It is wonderful to be part of a Fjord network that has as much passion for the horses as it does for all the people involved with them. On Wednesday, November 17, 2004, at 4 PM, the service was held at the farm of Lynne Christie Miller (Small Farmers Journal), in Sisters, OR. Amy drove the family's team of Fjord mares with a 4 wheeled marathon vehicle in the hay fields that Bud spent many days horse haying with Lynne Miller in the summer time. The sun was setting as the two sons (Bud Jr. and John) and the two daughters (Sharon Amy) along with Tillie rode in the vehicle to spread his ashes over the fields that he lovingly worked in the summer. Bud's grandson, John read a poem that he wrote for his grandfather and Sharon (his eldest daughter) read a beautiful tribute to him that she wrote on her long drive from Wisconsin to the family home. A large cow bell from Germany was rung during the service. This bell was found in a real farm supply shop in Germany and was made in Germany. It was not a tourist bell but the real thing. Bud had always wanted one and this bell was going to be a holiday present from Bud Jr. to Bud Sr.. Unfortunately, Bud Sr. never had the chance to see or hear it. If as in the movie, every time a bell rings there is a new Angel. then several were given this status during Bud's service and I am sure that Bud was one of them. The sun took its last look over the mountains as the service came to a close and the family and friends gathered in the Miller's farm house for hot coffee and OREOS. Oreos were Bud's favorite cookie. We all toasted to the fond memories of such a great man with an Oreo. Bud was a first generation American on one side of his family and a second generation American on the other. He had always wanted to be an American Cowboy. He was not only a true horseman but a true gentleman. Those of us that met him even once or knew him well all of our lives knew this of Bud. As his daughter Sharon said, Bud may not have had much in way of money but he was a very rich man. He was true to his passions (horses family) and true to himself. He was full of love and life to the very end. Wow was his last words. It makes you wonder if he was exclaiming the entrance of his new life in Heaven. or explaining his old life on Earth. Either way, Bud was a man of few words, but when this gentleman did speak it was worth listening to. Hugs to all, Catherine Lassesen

The American Horse Council Foundation recently commissioned Deloitte Consulting LLP to update and enhance its Economic Impact of the U.S. Horse Industry Study, conducted in 1996. The study has proven a valuable resource in explaining the economic impact of our industry on the nation and individual states to Federal, State and local officials, the media as well as the general public. This study represents one of our most effective tools to create a deeper understanding of our diverse industry and its participants to the public and policymakers whose decisions impact us most. Your feedback will be invaluable in helping the Foundation provide an accurate reflection of the significant size of the horse industry and the economic impact that it generates. A few minutes spent answering this survey could ultimately result in tax savings, better land use, funding for emergency relief and equine research and other benefits to you and all of the individuals and businesses involved with the industry. YOUR PARTICIPATION IS VERY IMPORTANT TO THIS PROJECT. Deloitte Consulting LLP is overseeing the survey process. Your anonymity will be preserved and all responses will be kept confidential, for use only in the context of this informational survey. Message from Mark McGinley
This message is from: Catherine lassesen [EMAIL PROTECTED] Please find below a message Mark McGinley wanted me to post to the Fjord List. Thank you, Catherine Lassesen --- Dear list members, Please find below a couple of posts that I had written to Steve in response to his comments to the list regarding a board member leaving the list. I had hoped Steve would have forwarded them to the list to answer some of your concerns as well. I have asked Catherine to do this for me now. I'm only sending my end of the correspondence since I haven't asked Steve's permission to posts his end. Thanks, Mark Dear Steve, Please find below my reply to your recent post regarding your list and the fact that it has experienced a diminished voice by my not receiving it anymore. I'd like to comment on why I chose to cease my subscription to your list since it was publicly released that I'm not on it anymore. First off, the list is not an official NFHR list. I'm sure this is obvious to you but I'm not sure it's as obvious to the list members. In fact one doesn't have to be an NFHR member or even own a Fjord for that matter to participate in the list. I'm not saying that this is a bad thing, I'm just pointing out that as a way to disperse information about NFHR business it's not the ideal format. We (the NFHR) should be talking to our members only when discussing NFHR business. Since I am an NFHR official, anything I say on your list can be taken as official business when in fact it should be considered only my point of view. Over the last year we have discussed (at the Board level) different ways of getting info out to the members and ways of responding to them as well, and how Board members really shouldn't be using this list officially, or at all. There is a possibility in the future of the NFHR having a more direct means of communication with our membership. Although we aren't sure what the format would be at this time. Secondly, as I'm sure you were aware, some of the list responses to recent discussions regarding NFHR matters were unnecessarily mean spirited and seemed to include snide remarks, conspiracy theories, conjecture, and mistruths. I did take offense to some of what was said but mostly just didn't want to be part of a conversation where people just talk and don't listen. This seems to happen on these lists and we can chose to be a part of it or not. I chose not to. I am more than happy to talk to anyone regarding NFHR business or Fjord horses in general. By not being a member of your list I'm not retreating from NFHR members or Fjord owners. I am online everyday and also carry a cell phone. I can be reached and I am very interested in what people have to say. My email address is [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] and my phone # is 715-373-2906. Feel free to post this to the list. I'm sure it came across that I asked to be taken off the list because I didn't enjoy the criticism that I had received. While that may be true to some extent it had more to do with the following: If I am not on the list I won't feel compelled to officially answer subjects about the NFHR thus almost guaranteeing a battle with the same 2 or 3 list members who use the list as almost a soapbox. This is the main reason I left. To avoid the possibility of the feeding frenzy that they seem to enjoy creating. If that's considered thin skinned so be it. I do feel that the list shouldn't be censored in regards to NFHR matters. The list should be a place where people can all state their views and hopefully listen to other opinions as well. When we don't listen that is the sad part. Finally, The archives are still available to me if I want to see what's up with this list. I confess I have looked at it over the last couple of days to see what responses, if any, members had towards your post. I did get the chance to read your comment to Fred Pack asking if he would sign off the list if he is elected to the Board. This statement was uncalled for I thought and basically more of the same stuff that motivated me to drop the list. Sour grapes on your part? NFHR members -If you really want to know you got the attention of a Board member please write or call them directly. I guarantee you will be listened to. Thank you, Mark K. McGinley NFHR Board Vice President Mariposa Farm Washburn, WI Hello Steve, When I first joined the Board I also thought that the list should be monitored (and answered) by a Board member. I felt that it was important to respond to our members. After a while I realized that almost all of the NFHR concerns brought forward on the list were generated by a very small group of people and many times the discussions deteriorated quickly into individual agendas. While I agree that the list has a large number of members, the vocal ones really only represent a small percentage of actual NFHR membership. It's not an accurate sampling group

Both Rune and I wish we could have made it but we were kept behind tending to our sick little and big one. Good news, is that Mojave is getting better by the day. Good for the breeders in our neck of the woods. Hello from the both of us to all of you. Fjords for sale
This message is from: Catherine lassesen [EMAIL PROTECTED] Anyone interested in good Fjords... Our farm will be reviewing our current goals and then listing young and older stock for sale. We have a little bit of everything that will be for sale this year. The majority of our stock has been evaluated at least in conformation. Many have been judges in performance also. All of them have been exposed to parades, traffic, arena work, and have been imprinting (If young stock). All of them trailer... we hauled all of them off property with the most resent fire evacuation... Not a one gave us a problem during a highly stressful situation... Fjords are sooo good... :-) All of them are vaccinated, wormed and up to date on farrier work... The foals get rasped monthly... Anyway... if you are in the market for good citizens (foals) or an older horse that you will get the ***Honest*** truth of what they can do or not do under harness and saddle... let us know. Catherine Lassesen Hestehaven - The Horse Garden
Listening....
This message is from: Catherine lassesen [EMAIL PROTECTED] The art of listening is The BOD is listening... our replies are the best we can make without seeing you FACE TO FACE. Email is a strange animal and the perception in what you read can mean two different things to two different people. Your VOTE in NFHR is done thru your BOD. If there are matters that you feel strongly about. (I KNOW THE LOGO! :-) ) then talk to the BOD. Believe me your voice has been heard! And we are listening! To batter people personally is not the way to go here... (Grandma always said you get more bees with honey than vinegar.) There are issues that the current Bylaws state that the membership has a vote on and there are issues that are done within the BOD. I do not know of a Corporation that does a stockholder's vote on all issues. I am not familiar with an on line corporation meeting that meets the legal requirements. If we look to the other corporations in our line of business, NFHR is acting upon the similar regulations. The current BOD is working on tightening up our Bylaws and recording how the structure of this organization ran and is running in the past 25 years. We are also looking forward to the next 25 years and beyond. We are looking at market trends and marketing the Fjord for the future. We would be lacking in our duties to not include the possible change of the logo. I WILL REPEAT THIS... NOTHING HAS BEEN VOTED ON WITH THE LOGO NOR A NEW LOGO SELECTED... AT THIS TIME. Your individual views on this issue is clear. We thank you for them. We have also heard from several others on this issue that are not on the list. We are listening to them also. AS FAR AS RUNNING FOR THE BOD... I was always taught that if I open my mouth and have a view I feel strongly about it that I must be prepared to DO something about it. Busy! Yup... I am! I run a Bed, Barn and Breakfast. I manage a 30 horse boarding facility. I volunteer locally and nationally for another organization. Our farm breeds 6 to 10 mares a year. I birth out 6 to 20 mares a year as part of the services we offer at our barn. I help the Oregon Fjord Club put on the Major attraction at the NW EXPO each year (Takes 365 days of planning), I teach lessons in vaulting, riding and driving, I train horses with Resistance Free methods, I train all my foals with imprinting session 3-5 times a day for their first 3 weeks of life. We hold Clinics, shows and events at our facility on weekends. I sell on ebay in the winter months. Our staff size is ONE... that is ME! :-) I may hire others when I am bogged down with a large event, specially if we are the hosts like at the Evaluation... but most of the time it is ME. (Rune joins in when he is home.) And yes, I am on the BOD... I do the distribution center as a volunteer. I have been Secretary for 3 years. And I refuse to have this list get me upset so that I request to be removed from it. I DO LISTEN... I do pass on your comments... and if I do not MIKE MAY does the passing on... --- Do YOU HEAR... what I am trying to say... NFHR NEEDS YOUR HELP... and if I can evoke 3 or more of you to say... I am running for the BOD... then I have done my job... :-) We need 4 or more to run to have an election In the past we have not had elections... we had to beg people to get on the BOD. This is your time to step up to the plate... Put actions behind your words... If you have 1 hour a day... then you have the same time I have... (Give up your TV for an hour...) :-) Ok. Enough said. This is to inform you all that we have a major fire here in Days Creek. (check out the news) Anyway, we have been moving the herd of horses off property and to safe locations all though out the last 2 days and nights. (I need a larger trailer ;-) ) I will not be able to communicate nor read the rest of your replies for awhile due to relocating the humans off our farm and waiting the long wait to see if your farm is hit or missed with fire. I trust you all will have plenty to say and plenty to think and read about. Many of you I will see at Libby and I look forward to talking with you in person. I am not all that bad and evil, :-). For those of you that do not know Mike May, I believe he will be at the Evaluation. Please try not to wound us (BOD) too hard. We care, that is why we got on the BOD. We are trying our best to work out the details of this organization and to firmly set the foundation of it on the ground so that the future (beyond our terms of office) can flourish. See ya later. If you are a person of prayer. Our farm and critter would love to be considered in your next one. :-) Catherine Lassesen (These are my personal views not sanctioned by the BOD or Mike May) Hestehaven - The Horse Garden Where them hills are a flame..:-)
Annual Meeting
This message is from: Catherine lassesen [EMAIL PROTECTED] Yes. you are correct that members do have a voice in NFHR. The way you can have a voice is listed below. 1. Annual Elections 2. Annual Corporation Meeting (Where we have only had 4 maximum attend that were not NFHR BOD MEMBERS in the 4 years I have been on the BOD) In 2005 it is in FLORIDA.. Contact Roger Cabic for more details. THE BOD is trying hard to get people to attend the annual meetings. This is where the game plan for the year is set. COME and have a VOICE 3. Committee Memberships and committee work 4. Run and be elected to the BOD and do the work! I hereby AGAIN. challenge all of you to RUN for the BOD. Send in your resumes TODAY. If you want to see the logo or anything stay the same or if you want to see things CHANGE. YOU MUST get involved. Just do not sit here on this list and talk. DO SOMETHING. BE ACTIVE in your Organization. Thanks again for all your wonderful comments. Catherine Lassesen BOD Member
LOGO - REPLY from committee chairman
This message is from: Catherine lassesen [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hello Everyone The promotions committee was given the tasks to look into the possibility of a new logo due to the fact that we have joined up with the Association, we are coming on our 25th anniversary and that the original logo is a very unclear hard piece of art work that needs to be reworked. The logo (new or old) will need to have work on it. The committee is in its final stages in bringing to the BOD a piece of art work that is a nice piece. This piece of art will be considered for the logo. The current Logo shows the team of Fjords as harness horses. It was the thought of the BOD that we should have a logo that does not select one particular sport. The Fjord is versatile and that the logo should reflect just that... the uniqueness of the horse. You as members of NFHR do vote on the Bylaws and on your BOD members. You as members are asked to jump in and run of the BOD and to help create the future of NFHR. Your voice is thru your BOD members. Talk to them, run for the BOD, volunteer for a committee. I challenge all of you that have a view on the LOGO to run for a position on the BOD and help run the organization. If each and every vote of the BOD had to go to the membership, we would not get one thing done. Change can hurt, but change sometimes is better in the long run. Your BOD is trying HARD to become PROFESSIONAL and trying hard to produce PROFESSIONAL PLANS for the FUTURE of YOUR ORGANIZATION. PLEASE RUN FOR THE BOD. THERE ARE THREE SEATS that will be OPEN. We need YOU TO SUBMIT your resume and the reasons why you want to run for the BOD to Roger Cabic at [EMAIL PROTECTED] you may also cc any of the current BOD members as a back up. The deadline is coming up soon So get OFF your chat lists and get to your computers and get your resume for the BOD ready and submitted. DO SOMETHING GET INVOLVED... SUBMITT YOUR NAME TO RUN FOR THE BOD... Thank you, These are my personal views not those of the BOD. Catherine Lassesen BOD Member and Chairman of Promotions

This message is from: Catherine lassesen [EMAIL PROTECTED] Rosemary, Did you use the West Nile shot on your mare? I am finding that there are a rash of hernias in foals this year. Rescue our last foal is born... fjords for sale
This message is from: Catherine lassesen [EMAIL PROTECTED] RESCUE: In reply to the Rescue Fjords that were thin. I have now Fjords in the opposite condition. They were LOVED too much and they are extremely overweight. We are slowly working them and have them on a diet. No joke these mares came to us with a back 3.5 to 4 feet wide. No saddle would ever fit them. When you sit on them it is like an armed chair and the other is like a very soft couch. I have photos and we are keeping a photo diary of these two very loved Fjords. Other than being very overweight, they are in great health. They gained the weight slowly and we are trying the same for getting the weight off of them. LAST FOAL: Our last foal was born on the 17th. A COLT from Oldermann and Lupin. We had a list a mile long for a filly out of her... so it is Murphy's Law that she had a COLT. He is unnamed as of today... but we are selecting a name by today. Mama, Papa and baby are PERFECT. So we will have a few BOYS for sale. FOR SALE: (contract directly for pricing) 1. COLT July 17, 2004 Brown Dun Mama: Lupin (High Red in NFHR CONFORMAION) Papa: Oldermann (79.75 Points in NFHR Conformation) This guy is long legged and will carry the markings his Mama and Papa has.) 2. COLT June 17, 2004 Grey Dun Mama: Lakka (BLUE) Papa: Johan (BLUE) Full Brother received BLUE as Weaner... (This guy is more stallion type and just as put together as his brother, very typee) 3. COLT April 17, 2004 Brown Dun Mama: Leka Papa: Perfect Stallion Prospect, very long legs remarkable markings great leg stripes. Movement is excellent. Great disposition and attitude. 3. OLDERMANN Brown Dun, proven Stallion or sold as a gelding. GREEN Broke for riding and ground drives as of this summer. He will be hitched by the end of summer. Sold as a stallion only to proven stallion handlers, otherwise will be gelded in the fall and sold as a gelding to anyone that loves a well behaving Fjord gelding. 4. FILLY Brown Dun 2 years, ground drives, Has been backed 1-2 times, lightly worked due to age and waiting for her to grow into herself. We would rather wait than over use our young stock. She does all the basics and is well behaving. She is a sweet filly. 5. Mixture of broodmares: We are not sure which mares will be for sale at this time, however, we do have a mixture of mares OPEN and in foal to Blaamann that will be offered. If you are looking for quality, well handled and useable broodmares that ride and drive, give us a call. We have good bloodlines and well behaving mares that work and are good for birthing out good quality foals. Thanks for reading this email. We hope you all are having a great summer. We wish for those going to BLUE EARTH and WOODSTOCK a wonderful time and show. For those that are preparing for an Evaluation, our thoughts are with you. We know how hard it is to prepare for such an undertaking. Rune and I are just playing this year. We will attend Libby Show but not the Evaluation part of it. We will go and enjoy 1-4 of our horses and the friendship that we have with many of you. Hope to see all of you soon, Catherine Lassesen Hestehaven - The Horse Garden [EMAIL PROTECTED]

NFHR - BOD Positions
This message is from: Catherine lassesen [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hello All, This is from Catherine Lassesen, personally. I know it is early to think about this.however, summer gets busy and DEADLINES come and go FAST. This year (2004) there will be three seats available on the Board of Directors. Three of the BOD terms will end in December and the three of the current BOD members are not running for a second term at this time. WE need VOLUNTEERS to run for these open seats. The process starts with the Closing of Nominations which is September 15th. All resumes and statements must be postmarked by this date. You can send in your resume and statement at anytime before this time. WHICH MEANS. start thinking about it NOW.. NFHR need YOU. We need Business minded individuals that are willing to serve a 3 year term on the Board of Directors. It included conference calls, emails communications and becoming involved in one or more NFHR Committees. It involved a Face to face meeting in January of each year. NFHR does pay for your trip to the meeting and pays for the housing and food while attending. This is the only time you as a Director get a financial benefit. It involves working with our members to benefit the community as a whole. It is challenging and fun and it is hard work and rewarding all at the same time. NFHR is your organization and every member should step up and volunteer at one point. If you want more information on how to apply and run for the BOD, contact Roger Cabic at [EMAIL PROTECTED] or 315-597-6851. You may also contact me directly. Thank you for reading this, Catherine Lassesen [EMAIL PROTECTED]

This message is from: Catherine lassesen [EMAIL PROTECTED] TO: Jon Mary Ofjord CONGRATULATIONS... The name of your filly is very beautiful and a wonderful way to give thanks to Sandy and Beth. Glad to read the news... Subject: SHOW verse PLOW Hey... why decide? Our LUPIN does them both... She is a happy all around mare... For that matter, so are Blaamann, Belle, Korlina, Tor, Grabben, Lensmann, Joe (non fjord but thinks he is), Mojave, Hans and Lakka. Maia, Leka, Oldermann, Honi Bunn, Ulric, Redemann, Riddermann, Regnmann, and Regnblomst are working on being both a show horse and a plow horse... Lyder... he said NO to pulling anything... He is mainly a therapeutic riding horse that goes in hospitals and visits children and the elderly. One out of 19 is not bad... (giggle) It really depends on what you want to do with them... Fjordees will do whatever you ask of them... Ask me, I know... I have thrown out many different situations and sports and play with the Fjords and they all except Lyder... have accepted the challenge and the training. Our foals go for trailer rides and then we walk around parking lots with Mamas for exposure and they take it all in. (early training and exposure is the best in my book) We take them to shows and we take the in the fields... We pull logs out of the forest and we drag fields after haying. Isn't this what the breed is for... EVERYTHING? Hey, I may not be able to pull the heaviest load with Lupin. Why... she is a good broodmare and show mare... but she will pull a good size load... I am not into draft work as much as Rune is... and he is not into the show draft work only the work on our own farm. So you will not see us at a field show pulling like Joel does... We do our own thing here with our own trees. You will find me once in a while take a horse or two and play at a show... I like the friendships at shows... I like to play at them... I like to have fun... the ribbons are a bonus to my own goals... (Not hitting the judge or another competitor... I have simple goals...lol) Actually in large driving classes... it really is my main goal... there were 2 really nasty driver at the last show that caused me to up my horse up to a complete stop to avoid being hit...(That is a different story...) Anyway... I say... SHOW, PLOW and GO OUT THERE AND HAVE FUN with your FJORD... Sitting around on the computer does not get that done... (LOL) See ya all at LIBBY... I think we are going with ah... a 4-up of some sort... (LOL) That is if I can talk Rune into it... AH ha... BU will have to help me talk him into it. :-) Bye, Catherine Lassesen Southern Oregon Where the sun will turn to rain this week... :-)
