FW: driving at the derby

2015-05-06 Thread lindy hild
This message is from: lindy hild bah...@comcast.net

Good Morning

Well, the Fjords moved into Louisville last week and managed to impress
just about everyone at the Pegasus Parade on Thursday April 30th . It’s a
big parade, there were about 115 units including about half a dozen “Macy’s
Parade” type balloons, and many floats.

We had 4 saddle horses, 3 singles with vehicles and 2 pairs of Norwegian
Fjords put to presentation vehicles, all dolled up in roses and ribbons. All
the people were wearing our very best turnout attire. Brass was gleaming and
tails and forelocks were silky in the breeze ( thankfully, the storm passed
over before we took to the actual parade route).

The parade route was almost 2 miles down Broadway through downtown
Louisville, and there were large crowds of enthusiastic ( and loud)
spectators, who’d also braved the rain and wind. Lots of waving on all
sides. Bruce Hild, wearing Norwegian National costume looked a lot like
Santa in “summer plumage” and many kids were very excited to see him! One
dad even called out “nice sleigh, Santa!” as he passed by in an antique
Victoria carriage driven by Curt Pierce.

I believe all of the humans had some inner qualms when the huge Kermit The
Frog parade balloon entered the queue just ahead of our unit. However, we
DID have Norwegian Fjords, after all, and they just stood there, totally
blasé about the big green balloon just ahead of them. It was quite a moment!
I know I was very proud of my mare, Dagney, just then.

The voiceover commentary on the television was very complementary of our
unique-looking horses. It was a wonderful time for us all. As if we needed
any additional source of delight for a splendid week, we were informed
Saturday morning that we’d won the Non-Professional Equine Unit Award.

Between the appearances in the 2014 Pasadena Rose Parade and the 2015
Pegasus Parade, I am happy to report that showing the delightful Norwegian
Fjord Horses to the general public has been proudly carried on.

Still tickled by it all !

It's finally time!!

Tomorrow and Wednesday, April 28 and 28, several drivers ( and riders) with
their Norwegian Fjord Horses will converge on the Kentucky State
Fairgrounds. We have been invited to appear in the Pegasus Parade, THE
official parade for the Kentucky Derby.

There will be 4 ridden Fjords, and 7 driven Fjords with various vehicles:
Curt Pierce and Marsha Korose are bringing Ulend and Solvar with an Antique
Victoria carriage, Bob Long is bringing a Turnout vehicle and pair, Ardeth
Obenauf is bringing a single with a marathon vehicle, Jennifer Harber is
driving a single and I am taking Dagney and my Bird's Eye maple roadster.

We are honored and thrilled to both be representing the Driving community as
well as our beloved, delightful and unique Norwegian Fjords. It's a
wonderful opportunity to show off the different sorts of horse-drawn
vehicles still in use to the general public. We won't be running for the
roses, but we'll be wearing them!

Dressage Driving of Fjords

2014-07-07 Thread Ursula Jensen
This message is from: Ursula Jensen ursu...@gmail.com

As one writer so aptly put it. There are no absolutes in horses and
dressage!! I totally concur with that comment from my time and experience in
the Fjord breed. Kudos, especially for the Fjord breed.

In Europe, I have trained or guest Judged in Germany, Denmark, and
Norway, and have yet to see Fjords presented for Conformation on pavement.
In Germany, Denmark and Norway the triangles I saw run were on outdoor soil
arenas, or indoor composite soils. Essen Equitana, where the German Fjords
are displayed to many yearly successes are working on composite ground
materials. Lately there has been a singular extra stallion trotting test at
Nordfjordheid on more solid ground. The Norwegian young stock are trotted on
outdoor soil triangles.

From my personal CDE experience in driven dressage driving singles,
tandem, pairs and fours I find the working trot of the Fjord usually quite
acceptable. The struggle comes with asking for the extended trot on the
diagonal. Fjords properly conditioned, trained, and athletic can usually
find it, but it takes time, training, maturity, and lots of CDE exposures.
Do not give up, they usually have one more gear in the trot. You and your
Fjord need to find it!

Lori Albrough, put the conformation context in a good frame of reference
from her discipline of ridden dressage. The wild card here is to never slot
your Fjord into a particular capability based on its body frame and
bio-mechanics.

In my Evaluation work here in Canada and the USA I have often looked at
a Fjord getting ready for a ridden or driven dressage thinking by its body
type I will likely not see much dressage or performance.

Surprise, surprise-watching this entry perform, I say, where in the hell
did that come from? Here is a rather average looking Fjord giving a
great extended walk and extended trot to die for!! Another Fjord breed
surprise.

Our Fjords here, out walk most other breeds around? They all have a
body busy rump swinging walk.

The gait from a Fjord that I love is the pairs switching to a lope/canter in
the CDE obstacles. It can be very quiet, efficient and smooth. Having a pair
or four-up cantering in unison in an obstacle can certainly give you the
prickles.

In closing I agree with Beth on the three breed types being recognized
here in North America. Each type has its own talents and abilities. America
is now the bastian of the three distinct body types.

Unfortunately in Europe one of these types is quietly disappearing due to
consumer demand. As Phillip much earlier said---Need begets Type!! The
Fjord world in the last 100 years has come full circle and is coming back
to its original self.

For that I am thankful. Mr. B.

Driving Radio Show Interview - Rose Parade

2013-12-20 Thread Teressa
This message is from: Teressa tere...@kodiakfishco.com

Here is a link to the Driving Radio Show podcast. Holly Finnoe worked to set
this up - as if she doesn't have enough to do getting parade ready - and she
and Ben Finnoe and I were interviewed. The fjord interview begins around
15:43 but prior to that is great information about driving programs and
after is an interview with a vet about blankets and problems they could
cause. Worth listening to it all!

http://drivingradioshow.horseradionetwork.com/2013/12/19/driving-radio-show-
episode-128-rose-parade-norwegian-fjords-perils-of-poorly-fitted-blankets/

I think all 13 horses will be leaving home on Christmas Day headed to
Pasadena - so, including today, only 5 more days to get ready. Yikes!

Our unit is #79 out of 91 units. The parade is televised by ABC, NBC, KTLA
(an LA station), HGTV, Univision (Spanish), and RFD TV. HGTV, RFD-TV (if you
have this, you know it, but many people do not) and KTLA will air the parade
in its entirety so you can be sure to see us on those. ABC and NBC cut away
to commercials, so coverage isn't a sure thing on those stations.

Equestfest, on December 29, will be aired by RFD TV on December 29 at 3 pm.
I don't know which time zone this is so check your program schedule at
RFDTV.com. This is a show featuring performances by each equestrian unit. We
have a great one planned - but only one day of rehearsal (yikes).

And before you ask, we have contracted with a company in LA to place all of
our televised coverage from every outlet and also from RFDTV of Equestfest
on a DVD. We hope to upload this to You Tube for maximum coverage. And we
also have a photographer's badge for our own photographer to collect images
- still and video. And of course, our participants will be taking photos and
several will have Go Pro cameras (video cameras that are strapped to head or
helmet or chest or carriage etc) to collect footage as well.

But watch us live if you can! We'll have folks posting events as they occur
on Facebook, probably on the chat list, and any other way we can.

RE: Driving Blinkers

2012-10-05 Thread Karen McCarthy
This message is from: Karen McCarthy weeg...@hotmail.com

Susan,
Re. driving w/o blinkers, yes, you can do this! It is permissable in all
venues, however, in a pleasure show it might be frowned upon by some
uber-subjective judges. Some horses are just naturally happier like this, and
I have driven some horses (Arabs mostly) who actually go better in blinkers, I
think because it limits their 'informational intake' and keeps them focused on
whats in front of them. I always start my horses by driving open when hooked
to a vehicle, then as they start anticipating the aids cues, I move back to
a blinkered bridle.
As you have figured out, driving is not as easy as you think, and you are wise
to ask alot of questions before jumping in...and you mentioned the
implications of driving 'round the property. Well, just so you know, but not
to scare you, things can get really funky in a hurry with a horse that is not
a confirmed driving horse, and especially w/ a green driver at the reins. You
need some buddies driving mentors if you are going to delve into this
discipline, and my suggestion is that you contact the Oklahoma Harness Horse
Assoc, http://www.oklaharnesshorse.com/index.html
which is an ADS affiliated club. From the looks of their website and
calendar, they are very active, and I am sure as a newbie they will take you
under their wing and point you in the direction of a good trainer and some
beginner driving clinics.
Just fyi, I have a Gjest grandaughter too who at age 5 has just been driving
for 2 months. She was a bit fussier at first than most of my other Fjords, but
one day she just decided that the world was ok behind blinkers and moved right
along in her training. I also do TONS of groundwork before I ever dream of
hooking them to a cart. Almost 100% of the groundwork is in an open bridle,
then I add race track blinkers over the bridle off and on and it becomes no
big deal. we do lots of standing, tied and untied while in harness, they learn
a good whoa and I expose them gradually to ever more challenging scenarios
away from home while ground driving (and riding too, I am not the energizer
bunny I once was walking for miles...) I also work my horses in a draft
harness during most of the groundwork phase: it's wonderful for desensitizing
them to weird stuff with the bulk of the harness, the collar, heel chains
clanging and traces around their legs, plus they learn to pull progressively
heavier objects which teaches them to pull (which is actually not such a Fjord
problem, but maybe more of a tendency reserved for Arabs and lighter breeds).
Costs for a decent (read: safe!) used harness, anywhere from $350 - $600 (make
sure it is American, Amish made typically), and a good used easy entry type of
cart can be had for $400-$800 depending. (I like the Jerald or Houghton
training type carts, esp. the ones w/ wood wheels. They are light, easy to hop
in and out of and if you move on up to a vehicle you can use to show in, you
can sell them pretty much for what you paid for them.)

Anyway, I've digressed quite a bit here in this post, but I think with the
right s-l-o-w approach to training for the both of you, you and Sparrow will
be driving for many years.
Bon Voyage!
Karen

Driving Blinkers

2012-10-04 Thread S Sexton
This message is from: S Sexton ssext...@hotmail.com

I've noticed there seem to be several driving folks on the list so I hope they
can answer this one and hope they'll have alot of patience. I've never done
any horse driving or related events before, just riding so it's all new and
interesting to me. I've learned that my mare was taught to ground drive and
even pulled a cart/buggy when she was very young. However, they mentioned that
she didn't care for the blinkers and so that really wasn't a direction they
went with her any further. I'm curious to learn a bit about driving and to see
what it would cost me to get all the harness (used I hope) and to learn on
the ground first and then maybe get a light cart to try my hand a bit - but,
if my mare isn't big on blinkers, would I be able to drive her without them or
is there a safety or other reason that horses wear the blinkers? I know my
mare likes to look around, we deal with that in the arena and riding around
the boarding barn property mounted, but I don't know the implications it has
for driving. Also, anyone have a ballpark range for buying a used harness and
cart (and how does one get a cart home then?) for just trying out the driving
sport. I have no plans, aspirations or thoughts of competing, it's nothing
like that, just interested in tooling around and showing off the many talents
of my very steady stable fjord mare to friends and such. Thanks,Stephanie

sweet pleasure driving vehicle

2012-07-03 Thread Karen McCarthy
This message is from: Karen McCarthy weeg...@hotmail.com

Just FYI, I just saw this sweet ladies wicker drop front phaeton that someone
was advertising on the CDList.Would be super cool for someone who is into
pleasure driving parades - its different, fancy but inderstated. Definitely
a summer pleasure vehicle. The metal work on the running gear and the way the
wicker merges into the body is quite stunning. It is for sale for 3k which if
you consider the rarity condition is quite a decent price. If only I was
closer...maybe the only thing I would try to alter is the width of the shafts
where they attach to the vehicle (24) which would require a bit of careful
work or new shafts.

So how do you handle all this pee? I have 12 foot overhangs the 2 Fjords
like to hang out under in this hot and flyish season. They pee there
continuously. Or if they are not too far away they will come there to pee
also. Despite copious use of lime and/or Sweet PDZ Stall Freshener, and
lots of shavings, and cleaning out twice a day, I cannot seem to get
ahead of this. There is a nice sand base which should drain, but it is
instead getting kind of icky in this weather.

Mine have 50lb salt blocks in the pasture they share with the deer,
except for one who is shut in at night to control her feed intake and she
has a small block also in her stall in a plastic bucket. I like them to
have access to salt all the time in this weather. The deer like the
 blocks also.

I switched to no blinders a few years ago to see if she would shy less
at monster looking objects ( pocket gophers mounds small logs) along
the road and never have put them back on. That way I don't have to
worry about her rubbing damaging the blinders. I don't let her rub if
I can help it, but this happens at times when one is not looking. It is
also easier to pack up the harness not be concerned how the blinders
are placed to not be damaged.

Driving bits

2012-02-11 Thread Phillip Odden

This message is from: Phillip Odden n...@norskwoodworks.com

Hello from Phillip Odden wondering where that wonderful globally
warmed winter went?

Bonnie said,
After going through vast numbers of riding bits for my other two Fjords
before ending up with HS bits for them, I figured I would start with
one
nice bit for Milo's driving career to avoid spending tons of money
searching
for the right one. The bit I ordered arrived and I am hesitant to use
it
in case I have to return it. It is a Herm Sprenger aurigan 16mm arch
mouth
butterfly. It has an smooth side and a bumpy side. The bumpy side
concerns

me..

Like anything else horse related there are lots of ways to look at
biting for a driving Fjord horse. I expect your choice is a good one.
Fjords are said to have generally thicker tongues and need an arch
mouth for tongue relief. I like Glory bits. They have an arch set at a
forward angle with no rough side. This rough side can get people into
trouble if they put the bit in the bridle so the rough side comes into
play when the reins are tightened. And sometimes they think they have
the bit right side forward when they don't because it is a little
tricky. You almost have to get rather personal with your pony and put
your fingers in its mouth to feel what is happening when you engage
the bit. This goes for the curb chain too. Curb chains can and should
be adjusted depending on what you want to happen when you tighten the
lines. Not something you should leave to happenstance.

Butterfly bits are reversible so they swivel. Some say it is possible
to pinch the corners of the horse's lips in the swivel. Can,'t say
that it has happened to me with my horses but then I don't know for
sure. I expect the bit you have is finely made and the swivel is tight.

The butterfly probably has two settings. A liverpool has several
more settings including the one I use nearly all the time, with
nearly all my horses, rough cheek. The rough cheek setting is just
above the first slot just under the mouth piece. Because the liverpool
has more settings I prefer them over butterfly driving bits.

In the end it is the driver's responsibility to know and at least to
try to understand what will happen when she or he tightens the lines
on the driving bit. That is an important aspect of horsemanship. So I
expect there will be many different answers depending on which driving
discipline and tradition you are involved in. But a very good question
Bonnie.

respectfully,

question about driving bits

My new driving Fjord, Milo, has been going nicely in a mullen flexible

Does anyone use this type of bit mouthpiece on their Fjords? I see a

the butterfly? Any advice would be appreciated.

Accomplished driving mare for sale

2012-01-14 Thread Gayle

This message is from: Gayle fofdfjo...@clearwire.net

Hi All,

I have a very accomplished driving mare for sale. She has done everything
from parades to wagon trains to CDE's. She is an absolute sweetie pie with
a go-get-um attitude, forward and energetic. I am currently using her for
riding lessons to refresh that part of her training. Since she has been
used primarily for driving, I am trying really hard NOT to put a sliding
stop on her. That would not be good hitched to a cart!!

Dustin's Kaylee, aka 'Pixie' is 15. She can be purchased with or without
her cart and harness. The cart is an immaculate, top of the line,
Meadowbrook and the harness is a Zilco marathon in very good condition. It
comes with a Mylar Liverpool driving bit ($100+ by itself).

This little lady would be best suited for an intermediate or advanced
person. I would love to see her put through an Evaluation. Dusty needs one
more offspring to earn his sire award - SOOO - I will reimburse Evaluation
entry fees to the person who earns a performance medallion with her.

Stafford Driving clinic

2011-05-15 Thread Phillip Odden

This message is from: Phillip Odden n...@norskwoodworks.com

Hello Folks from Phillip Odden in Northwestern Wisconsin where we
are experiencing our first thunder storm of the season. I can hear
Thor and his powerful chariot banging away in the heavens as I write.

Last weekend our Northwoods driving club hosted the second Suzy
Stafford driving clinic. We have a wonderful driving club composed
of members with diverse interests in the driving world. And there is
every kind of horse pony or mini imaginable but not too many highly
bred animals. Our club members come from Northern Wisconsin and
Northern Minnesota. We are used to making do, improvising and
getting along. But our members do very well in ADS CDE and Pleasure
Driving competitions in the Midwest and in other regions when we
travel. Our Northwood harness club members have proven we can play
with the best of 'em. And now we are inviting First Class driving
instructors to our area. There were three and one half days of
lessons booked. Suzy Stafford was able to speak to each and every
driver and horse on a level they could understand so as to make
improvements for their individual goals.

The problems were often the same. If the horse was not able to relax
it was often a problem with the bit or rough or busy hands with the
driver. Many horses were afraid of bit contact and drivers were
challenged to understand proper contact. Often the horses had
problems coming round without relaxation and proper contact. For
many they needed better rhythm in their gaits. After that there
were horses that were not bending well, mostly because the drivers
did not know how to help their horses bend. There was a lot of
inside- outside rein instruction. Not easy if you haven't been
exposed to it. After that there were some horses that were not
engaging their rear ends so they lacked impulsion.

I brought my 6 year old Red Dun gelding Frode sired by my stallion
Smedsmo and out of a mare I used to own Woods Karina. I called her
Raude since she was red. Smedsmo's mother was red. Now I have a full
sister to Raude named Eirose and she is red as well and she scored
an 81 in conformation. I have two full red dun brothers from Eirose
and by Smedsmo and they look just like Frode with darker red coats
and very light colored mane and full white tails. Frode is very
striking because of his well muscled body and his contrasting coat
color. And Frode is very athletic. He is fit and trim even in his
winter coat. Frode is shorter in his body frame, more compact and
stands about 14 HH. He brings lots of comments because of his
presence and athletic ability. It is easy to see.

I have been training Frode for about 16 month single and in pairs. I
drove him single for Suzy this past weekend. I can say that all my
pair horses drive single and none of them have any problem driving
single since I school them as singles and I switch them back and
forth from one side to the other in several different pair
combinations. Currently I have 7 or 8 horses that I can take to ADS
driving shows that drive single and in pairs.

Frode is a very calm horse and it takes a lot to get him rattled.
Suzy's first comment as I drove him into the ring was that he could
walk. He has a big natural over-stride at the walk. He had good
rhythm in his gaits, he could bend well both ways and he had the
proper flexion in his neck and head and he could easily come round.
He held his gaits well. She liked his steady working trot. Frode was
soft in the mouth and responsive. After a few minutes she stopped
the lesson to say that she didn't often see Fjords that could move
like Frode. Since all the basics were in place she asked what I
wanted to work on.

I asked her to show me how she works to get lengthening at the trot.
She drove as I watched her chase him from a working trot to the
lengthened trot by building impulsion from the rear with more energy
and holding him the front end closed. When she drove she kept his
face on the vertical so he reached up under with the hind legs and
shot the front legs forward. I think she was schooling a more
advanced lengthening than I was was looking for, but Frode seemed to
be capable, if only for 2 to 5 strides. When I drove him for her I
let him lengthen his body a bit as well since this is what most
judges have suggested should happen at Prelim level. In the past I
had been asking for lengthening from a more collected trot or I had
chased a horse on an open road into rounding up and lengthening. But
I have had trouble in Dressage tests in getting a solid quick
transition across the diagonal which is what seems to be required.
So now I will school in a different way. But it sure helps if you
have a horse with the conformation and natural ability to do this
stuff.

The Northern Illinois Horse Driving Club will be hosting a driving clinic on

you know, Phil is a very accomplished horseman. He takes his horses out west
to use them hunting, he uses them to do farm work, such as, harvesting maple
syrup. In addition to this, he has done very well in the show ring in
pleasure shows and the CDE circuit. Phil and his pair of Fjords were
invited to put on a demonstration at the World Equestrian Games.

Participants will be able to bring their horse and have a private lesson
with Phil. Each lesson is 55 minutes long. The lessons are $80 for our
members. $85 for non-members. (The annual membership is $5.) Or you can
audit for the weekend for $30 (for members) or $35 (for non-members).

The clinic will be held indoors (or outdoors if the weather is nice) at the

Sleigh and Cutter Driving Opportunity

This message is from Phillip Odden in Northwestern Wisconsin where soft flakes
of snow are falling on a crusty 5 inch base of snow. In the next couple days I
will haul out my sleighs for the winter season. I maintain sleigh trails from
December to maple syrup season in late March here on our farm. I use the
trails to train my young Norwegian Fjord Horses and to keep my experienced
Fjord horses in good condition. I drive singles and pairs but I prefer pairs.

This winter Else and I are offering two opportunities for someone to drive our
experienced horses and sleighs at a sleigh and cutter rally. First the 2011
Ashland Sleigh and Cutter Rally in Ashland, Wisconsin on January 8. The second
opportunity to drive will be the CAA winter Sleigh and Cutter Festival during
the 125th annual St Paul winter carnival January 28 and 29, 2011.

If you have always wanted an opportunity to drive in a colorful sleigh and
cutter rally here is your chance. The packages include the use of our horses
and equipment, a couple days of driving lessons on the trails or in our indoor
arena, a tour of our artist studios and the hospitality of our traditional
Norwegian home. For further details and prices please contact me by private
email.

If it has to be winter it might as well snow. I can almost hear the sleigh
bells now.

Re Driving Digest

2010-09-06 Thread Phillip Odden

This message is from: Phillip Odden n...@norskwoodworks.com

This message is from Phillip Odden in Northwestern Wisconsin where
summer seems to be giving way to fall but the mosquitos are still
mighty thick.

Thanks Julie for the kind words about our program here at Odden's
Norwegian Fjord Horses. It will be fun to see the picture in Driving
Digest. Iron Horse 2010 was a memorable event with all the top Four in
Hands there. Iron Horse is such a nice venue with lots of wonderful
volunteers, drivers and exciting horses. The obstacles there are
certainly challenging.

Some years ago Else and I set a goal to show well trained and nicely
mannered athletic Fjord Horses at ADS sponsored pleasure driving shows
and Combined Driving Events across the country. To be successful we
knew we needed to find Fjords that could move as good as, or better
than the Morgans, German sport ponies, Halflingers, Welch ponies and
all the other great driving horses out there. These days the horses
people are choosing to drive and ride at open shows are getting better
as people understand it takes a good athletic horse to compete. It
also takes a horse that is trainable, able to focus, and one that will
remain sound over time in a demanding sport. These are the same
qualities that make good trail horses or good dressage horses.

The NFHR Evaluation Program offers the basic knowledge to get started
in the right direction. I have learned a great deal from the
evaluation program. As I started to choose horses to compete with some
day, I didn't want to rely on some breeders self serving propaganda on
which to base my choice for an athletic sport pony and a breeding and
training program of our own. I wanted to learn for myself what it
takes. I decided on the conformation and disposition I wanted in my
competition horses based on what I learned from the NFHR Evaluation
Program. Then I set out to prove or disprove what I thought would work.

When we are not competing our show horses we use these horses around
the farm to haul firewood, haul maple sap, till the garden, trail
ride, and as pack horses on hunting trips out West. I often practice
driven dressage movements with my hay wagon.

It takes a team effort to do pleasure shows and CDE. Howard and Sophie
Fiedler and Else and I have had lots of fun along the way. When Howard
isn't able to go Bob Long has also helped. As many of you know, Else
can take some awesome horse photos besides helping to clean harness
and vehicles. It takes a team effort. You can't get there by yourself.

There are several other Fjords doing very well at ADS pleasure shows
and CDE's across the country. Right now I think Howard and Sophie's
stallion, the one they call Hershey, is one to watch. He has scored
very well in the NFHR evaluation program and he too is proving himself
in ADS sponsored driving shows and ridden dressage shows.

Next weekend we will be at Villa Louis on the banks of the Mississippi
trying to extend our string of Championships there and then off to
demonstrate at the World Equestrian Games in Lexington Kentucky in
October where we hope to churn up a cloud of dust in the ADS Driving
Derby.

Stay safe,

Phil Odden

Driving Digest

2010-09-05 Thread igs4me
This message is from: igs...@tds.net

The Sept/Oct issue of Driving Digest arrived yesterday and has a nice article
about the Iron Horse CDE. Most of the first two pages of the article are taken
up by a GORGEOUS photo of Phil Odden, driving Marcie Herger ( Howard Fiedler
'gatoring I presume). They are blasting out of a water hazard and they look
amazing. If you do not get Driving Digest - try to get a copy of this issue -
that picture alone makes it worth it!
And thanks to Phil - who is a wonderful ambassador for the best ponies ever!
You are doing a fantastic job showing everyone how athletic and talented fjords
are.

Linda Sysverson-Kerr and driving accident

2010-06-15 Thread Kathy M. Johnson
This message is from: Kathy M. Johnson ka...@relayhouse.com

as many of you have heard by now, Linda was in a driving accident last
Saturday, 6/12. We were attending a CDE clinic at Hickory Knoll Farm in
Fitchburg WI. Clinicians were John Betsy Freiburger and Deb Bevins. The
morning was devoted to driven dressage and the afternoon to driving hazards.

As we were not going to drive Reidar in the hazard portion, Linda volunteered
to be the navigator for an Intermediate driver that is local to the Madison
area, Cathy Thomas. Linda was so excited to learn more about navigating as she
had plans to attend Bromont (CAN) the last weekend in June, navigating for
Andy Marcoux. After successfully driving the water hazard and the sunflowers,
Cathy and Linda came to the hazard called Stormin' Normanwhere I was one
of the timers. They had multiple successful runs, trying different
routes...and on the last run, which by the way, was the fastest for
them...experienced an accident with the carriage tipping over. They did not
hit anything (tree, gate, etc). It was an ACCIDENT with no specific reason to
place blame. Both Cathy and Linda were wearing their helmets and safety
vests! Most likely why both ladies will be able to tell their own story!
Cathy has a fractured pelvis and Linda sustained a concussion. Linda is still
in the ICU unit where they can monitor the pressure inside her head. She does
have her cell phone...so has been able to send messages to Facebook.

Cards and letters can reach Linda at University of Wisconsin Hospital, 600
Highland Ave., Madison, WI 53792 OR to her home in Holmen, WI. Email:
syversonsfjordl...@gmail.com

Please keep her in your thoughts and prayerswe want her back driving!!

Driving Lessons

2010-03-08 Thread sarah gibson
This message is from: sarah gibson equ...@gmail.com

Hi there,

I have a coming two year old fjord and may be interested in driving
him in the future. What I would really like to do is take some driving
lessons to see if it would be something I would enjoy. Because I am
new to the breed I don't know very many fjord people and so I am not
sure where to look for lessons.

Does any one know where I could take some driving lessons, preferably
from a fjord person, near Saint Ignatius, MT. I am willing to drive up
to an hour for lessons.

Thanks,

Sarah

Hello...my name is Susan Palmer, and Maureen suggested that I get in touch
with you as a source who might know of someone who would be a good new
owner
for my mini. I bought her from Carol Elvin. She is trained to drive, though
green, and at this point needs bringing back, because I have been unable to
 drive for many months.

She is 32, grey, and has a laid back attitude. Even though she is green,
she is very brave on the trail, facing down such horrors as a screaming
baby
in a running stroller, preceded by a large barking dog, and followed by a
panting woman w/flapping sweat shirt attached to her waist. Bicyclists
don't
seem to bother her, or cars. A VERY large semi that came from behind and
gave off a dreadful clatter while passing made her jump forward, but she
came right back to me. It breaks my heart to be giving her up, but my
health
has deteriorated to the point that I can no longer care for her.

I do not want to give her away, as I think that sometimes people do not
value something that is free, but I am very willing to be as reasonable as
possible to make sure she goes to a good home. Good being a relative
term...I am not thinking that a home where she would be turned out on
someone's yard to get fat and founder would be good.

Thank you for any leads you might be able to provide. I live in Bellingham,
 WA. My phone is 360-756-6092.

 Sincerely,

 Susan Palmer

I am posting this as Karen was having trouble getting this through to the
List
Karen Dudley Haines have been really gracious in opening up their nice ranch
in Morongo Valley. It is a little gem of a place nestled in a desert canyon -
so I am optimistic the weather will be nice down there!

We have room for 1 or 2 more horses over the weekend, and of course more
auditors are welcome. if there is the need, I am open to adding in Monday,
Jan. 11th as well.
I will be bringing a lot of driving draft equipment to use
for 'show tell' and to share during the clinic, so if you are
worried about not having the right equipment, don't fret!
feel free to contact me if you have questions,
Cheers,

Driving Harness Collar Question

2009-09-24 Thread Becky Schooff
This message is from: Becky Schooff beckysue...@hotmail.com

Hello All,

I am purchasing a leather buggy harness for my short, stocky Fjord and trying
to decide between a breast collar or a full collar with hames. I'll be
pleasure driving along dirt roads mostly (a little bit on paved roads to get
to the dirt roads) and on natural fields with some hilly spots. He'll be
pulling a Haflinger size Pioneer Forecart. I'm a novice driver and taking
lessons from a Pro.

What has been your experience with breast collars vs full collars? Do you
have any preference or advice to share about the type of collar to use on a
Fjord?

Thanks, BeckySue in Colorado

Subject: Driving bits

I'm thinking about buying a mullen mouth liverpool driving bit for my
fjord mare, Trina, as it was recommended by my trainer. She has been
driving well for a year and a half in a low port liverpool on the
first slot, but she is a very forward mare and sometimes tosses her
head when you apply the curb chain. She's one of those strong-willed
fjords, but hasn't given me any trouble. Apparently she gave my
trainer some grief this past month when I was laid up with a broken
leg and left her with the trainer. I wonder if a mullen mouth bit
will really help. Any comments?

Glory Liverpool Driving Bit for Sale

2009-08-03 Thread Lori Albrough

This message is from: Lori Albrough l...@bluebirdlane.com

I have a Glory Liverpool mullen mouth driving bit for sale, it is 5 3/4
wide, has a black leather curb strap. It has fixed cheeks (not the
swivel cheek model).

The marketing info on these says The Glory Bit features a curved
mouthpiece which makes this bit a hybrid between a Mullen and Arch
Mouth. The copper alloy mouthpiece promotes salivation which helps to
achieve a more responsive mouth. These are popular bits with Fjord
owners because they work well for a low palate and thick tongue.

This bit retails for $95 US. I'd like $50 US for mine. It has been
little used and carefully stored. I ordered it directly from the maker,
Glory Metal Works, in July of 2000.

I like the Myler butterfly driving bit with a low wide port (MB15) You can
order
htem in any width from Driving Essentials. You can also order this mouthpiece
in a
Liverpool cheek. The Glory bits are also good, but hard to find anymore?

Fjords have low pallets and large tongues, so a mullen mouth or low wide port
may
help. The shape of the Myler bits really helps also.

For Sale: Thor an 8 year old, Registered Brown Dun Norwegian Fjord

him in action. There are several videos, one showing that he stands well
while being hooked to a cart, another showing how well he handles himself
when he is boxed into a corner while pulling a cart, another showing him
navigating through some cones, backing, and a another video shows that he
has a nice long stride, videos are not necessarily in that order. Thor is a

Driving Training for Owners and Fjords-2009

2009-02-12 Thread Ursula Brian Jensen
This message is from: Ursula Brian Jensen ujen...@junction.net

I believe Trinity Fjord's is up around the successful completion of 40
driving packages for owners/handlers. We offer 5 schooling Fjords and draft
or carriage harness for the vehicles. The package offered is for the student
and a guest auditor. There are no groups, so a participant has lots of hands
on driving.
As well I take outside Fjords in small amounts to train for driving
in singles, pairs, or multiples. We usually book these Fjords seasonally, in
spring, summer, fall, or winter. This driving training includes a turnover
lesson for the owner. We have references available on the training provided
for outside Fjords.
We have had some bookings through to next winter, however there are
still openings most seasons. If the Fjord is within one days drive from
Trinity Fjord's, I can pick up and deliver for costs.
Contact us for further information.

Hi Margaret: So good to hear that Noel is back behind the reins. Thought
I'd mention that our TSRC has recently donated $$ to the Caisson Platoon at
Ft. Myer in Arlington, VA for a similar purpose. There are many returning
vets who are either paraplegic, missing limbs, and sometimes both.
Therapeutic riding has long been accepted, but now they have an accessible
cart that you can load the wheelcheer and tie it down for security...so the
therapeutic driver is in a very secure position. I'm wondering if this
might work for Noel too...and possibly if he might be eligible to access the
therapeutic driving program that's available. Might be worth checking into.
Best regards, Jan in Purcellville, VA

Happy New Year to Everyone,

I don't post often since my posts end up with weird symbols and spacing in
them, but I couldn't resist this piece of news.

Yesterday, our friend and neighbor, Noel drove Catherine Lassesen's mare, Lupin
in our ring.? Noel is a paraplegic from a rotational fall while eventing.? At
the time he was an upper level event rider.? He has spent the last decade in a
wheelchair.? A few years ago he asked if he could try driving as he does have
use of his arms.? The initial attempt was good except the driving seat tilted
him forward and somehow when being helped out of the cart by his wife, his leg
was broken.? I guess the good part about being a paraplegic is that it didn't
hurt, but obviously it was a setback.? So we have been working on rigging a
different?seat and fitting seat belts.? We also created?a loading ramp.?
Yesterday we tried again and it worked.? Noel had a blast walking and trotting
Lupin around the ring.? By the end we were running cones and he was thrilled.?
As the navigator, I can tell you that he was moving right along, too.

Needless to say Lupin was perfect and had no issue with Noel, his wheelchair
and all the commotion involved in loading.? I am so pleased that Catherine has
leased her to me, although I should add that she is for sale.? (Contact me if
you want more information on this fabulous mare.)?

Noel plans to keep driving and start competing later this year.?? I have plenty
of Fjords?that drive.? Fortunately we have the advice and assistance of Curt
Pierce, who knows more about CDEs and driving competitions than I do.??

We all know the expression it is better to give than to receive.? I can say
that yesterday was one of those days for me.? And of course, a Fjord would be
involved.

If someone has balance problems, I highly recommend getting a western saddle
with professionally turned stirrups. The ones where there is a piece of
leather wrapped around the stirrup flap, and then tied in place. I recently
bought a saddle like this, and was amazed at how much easier it was to stay in
the saddle. You might be able to come close to duplicating the effect by
aggressively wetting and turning the stirrups with a two by four put through
the stirrups while the saddle is stored.

1a. Trip to Tulsa - long read  but fraught with craziness
Posted by: Shae Butts [EMAIL PROTECTED] riverbendwelsh
Date: Fri Oct 3, 2008 9:47 am ((PDT))

Diary of two Mad Widows or Here’s your Sign?
Our trip to Tulsa

I should have felt it the moment Lisa, my best gal pal, and fellow widow in
mourning, dropped that brand new bottle of Piesporter wine on the street in
front of the house at 6 am last Thursday morning.  I’m sure it was a sign of
Bad
Karma, missing MOJO or something else even more ominous.  Forget everything…
.forget the fact that we had spent a week packing for the horse show!  Forget
that we had a rig that rivaled most tractor trailer drivers!  Forty-two feet
of
Dodge Dully and Sundowner Pro-stock sitting at the ready!  Forget that our
carriages were loaded along with hay and tons of gear!  Why in God’s name do
we
pack so much?  Showing is not new to us….we think we’ve trimmed way
back…and
yet….we are still loaded to the gills! Why did I battle fire ant bites (left
over sweet feed) in the overhead of the gooseneck making sure everything was
crammed in there nice and tidy?  Why did I stay up late washing my ponies and
pulling
manes…crippling myself on my unsteady foot that I’d only had surgery on
three weeks ago….all this to ‘feel’ that bad karma on Thursday morning?
Unpack
it all…..right now!      NOT!

This was our first trip out of state…all the way to the State Fair and
Central National Welsh show…in Tulsa, Oklahoma…without Mike and Dave….our
dear
husbands…..lost to us…only last year…and within 8 weeks of each other.
In fact,
the last show Mike attended with me….was this show a year ago.  I think we
were both excited…and nervous about going…seeing old friends that we only
see at
this particular show…and knowing those encounters would bring new
sensitivities to surface.
Breathe...and just go forward………………………….our newest motto.

The one persona that was ecstatic about this trip was Elvis.  Elvis’s real
name is Graceland’s Good News.  What are you going to call an 11.2 hand
stocky
pony stallion fraught with punk rock flaxen forelockexcept Elvis?  Elvis
was thrilled because not only was he riding next to his daughter…and he is a
very good poppa to all his babies…but also had as travel mates, three
gorgeous
mares….one of which he already had carnal knowledge, Menai my Desire,
Lisa’s
driving pony!  The other two were section B’s and top of the line mediums,
full
sisters and big…I mean BIG!  Elvis loves the big girls!  If he were not the
impeccably mannered soul that he is….we would never be able to travel in this
manner….Two carriages up front and divided…and everyone else side to side
all
the way to the gate, sans any dividers.  Every pony had a personal hay
net….and
a comfy floor full of shavings.  Even the vertically challenged filly was
comfy
in her little fly mask and standing next to her daddy for the 10 hour drive
to Tulsa.

Brianna, Lisa’s 9 year old was piled atop tons of bags, blankets and pillows
in the back seat….candy and treats at the ready…and a bag chocked full of
DVD’
s to watch on her little player.  Lisa and I were armed with thousands of
Diet Cokes (nectar of the Gods) and packs of chewing gum to rival any grocery
store isle.  She would drive us all the way through Dallas, and I would take
the
second leg into Tulsa.  A few stops were made for fuel, more junk food, and
potty breaks and still we made the fairgrounds in good time.

As we looked about for our stalls location…..I kept hearing some large pony
screams emanating from the direction of our trailer!  I realized it was
Elvis…
and went quickly to investigate….However it happened…I will never
know…but
Elvis had become unclipped from his tie….and had all the mares (still tied)
herded into one corner….as he was preparing himself to choose which to breed
first.  His baby daughter was tucked under the throat of the smaller mare
peeping
out at a daddy whose behavior she did not recognize!  I quickly removed him
from
the trailer…and later on the stunned group of mares….standing

Fjords driving in the neighborhood

2008-08-21 Thread M. Denmark
This message is from: M. Denmark [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Well a while back you (someone on the [EMAIL PROTECTED] list)
asked what folks were doing with their pairs...well we have been having so
much fun driving around the
neighborhood lately. It had been so hot this summer we just didn't
want to punish our ponies or ourselves by going out in the 100+
temps. But the rain has come to south Texas and it is glorious and so
much cooler. Of course we never know when the showers are going to
pop up but we aren't letting that stop us. The ponies think we're
crazy to go out in the rain but off we go anyway.
These fjord geldings are a relatively new pairing with one guy that is
just learning about being a pair mate and we have found that puddles
and garbage day are not his favorite things...which is why pairs is
such a wonderful invention. Well in the pouring rain we took them
down the road which was covered in sheets of water and over the lake
bridge and he soon decided it wasn't so bad. Now the hissing of the
car tires and the flinging of water onto them was a bit disconcerting
but no big deal. We decided to go off road and through the woods on
a sandy trail. Well that was an awesome training opportunity as there
were many large areas of water ponding that were about a foot deep and
15-20 feet across. I was so proud (and surprised) as the boys just
plowed right through it each time. We rarely have the opportunity to
go through water like that so it was quite useful.

Oh and I almost forgot the young lady on her bicycle that came up from
behind to pass us. Bikes can be bad enough, but this was in the rain and
she was carrying a big umbrella. Ponies didn't hardly even take a look.

Last Saturday our new friend Shari came up from near the Gulf Coast
and she gatored for the boys...I think it was her first gatoring and
pairs experience. She was very good at it. She is in the process of
training her new driving pony (sigh, unfortunately not a fjord...I tried to
tell her she need another one. :-) Her hubby would like a fjord though.

We have also been bringing along a young fjord mare that is new to driving
and soon to be a pair partner. The other day we had our queen of all she
surveys mare
hitched and ponying the newby behind on the streets. We had one of
the ultimate spook potentials and it was a non-starter. Evidently some
dogs had gone through the area and torn up all the trash bags that
were set out. Well one must have had something quite appealing to
buzzards in it. We look up the road and there must be 30 buzzards
feasting on the trash scattered on the road. Also there are those
handle type grocery plastic bags rolling down the road in the breeze
all over. I was afraid all the buzzards would raise up at once and
fly but no they just hopped to the side of the road and stood around
flappiing their wings while the girls had to wind their way through
buzzards, trashbags and blowing plastic. Those mares were so
good just looked and never got worried.

So we are trying to make learning opportunities for the ponies where
we can. We hope we can get our gelding pair fit and ready for a
charity trail ride/drive in October for our daughter's therapeutic
riding and driving center. So we have a fitness goal...keep your
fingers crossed we manage it.

Hope everyone else is having fun with their fjordies.

Here's the 'reprint - Thanks!

Hi Everyone,

My husband and I are making a road trip from northern MN to Seattle WA and
Kamloops BC this fall, with a side trip up to Vancouver if possible. We will
be traveling across on Hwy 2 most of the time, stopping in NW Montana and
Spokane areas for a bit, and then knocking around north of Seattle in the
coastal area.

Since I'm panicking over actually getting a vacation, yet NOT being able to
have my horses with me, I'm trying to find horse/driving/riding things to see
and hopefully do along the way. Museums? Clinics/lessons? Riding stables? Any
suggestions?

Time frame is roughly Sept. 20 - Oct. 5th

I'd appreciate any suggestions or ideas... Reply off list would probably be
best.

Re: Bitless Driving

2008-04-19 Thread KateSeidel
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

-- I think our lists and magazine are completely appropriate places for
this sort of thing.

-- My interpretation of the discussion on horses not wanting to please
people was more from a natural animal behavior. With some animals, primates
or
dogs for example, you will see them actively submitting or seeking to appease
or please other members of the pack or tribe. That is NOT typical behavior in
horses - horses interact with each other by applying pressure until the
object submits or returns the challenge. I don't think the author's point was
that we can't raise, teach or influence our horses to where they want to
please
us, and he does reference clicker training as an example. It's that
negative reinforcement is a highly effective, productive, and natural way to
work
with herd animals. Your horse does not respond to the whip because they want
to please you - they respond because they want to avoid the whip. Your
horse does not innately turn to the right to please you - they turn to avoid
the
pressure from the bit or halter. It works pretty well, but most people don't
like to think of it as negative reinforcement.

-- On some of the few occasions where I have been driving with highly
experienced drivers, they could have - for all practical purposes - been
driving
bitless. The lines, the bridle, the bit were there solely as back-up. The
actual drive was almost entirely voice managed. We've talked before about the
fact that there is no bit/bridle/rein/line combination in the world that can
stop a horse who is determined to go, so to some extent every time we get on
or behind a horse we are taking a significant chance and risk. I don't have a
problem with people who are confident enough to take bigger chances than me.

-- I can't abide the Parelli machine, but I respect the philosophy and
approach to working with horses. And maybe one day I'll have a partnership
with
my horse where I am comfortable riding out without a bridle. But I'm okay
with the fact that for now, if I want to ride, it's going to take some
back-up
to help me be confident enough (a saddle, a bridle, a bit, and a helmet!!).

I received the Herald today and read through some very nice articles and
well written passages and beautiful pictures, however when I came to one
article
in particular Training a bit less, voice only fjord. I have to say that
It gave me very uncomfortable feeling in many comments such as horses not
wanting to please humans (which I have found to be just the opposite
especially
with the Fjords) and if this method were tried by many of the people that
I
have seen, well I think that I would stay off the road and under safe
cover.
Using force and discomfort as a primary training method is only saying to
me
that we as humans have not evolved very far. As stated in this article
the
author only has experience with negative re-enforcement. Well I must say
that a good boy or girl and a lot of good pats a Fjord will do anything for
you, even leave their beloved food pile to perform. So I am rather
disappointed with this article. I do not feel it is sound and safe as
method that
should be advocated in a breed magazine..I am interested in how
everyone
else felt and is this really an appropriate place for this sort of thing?

I'm in NE Oregon at the base of the Wallow Mountains. Don't feel bad
about the snow - we just got 5 of new snow this afternoon. A week ago
we still had 12-18 of snow on the ground. A bunch melted off over the

technique in the clinic!  All of the proceeds will benefit Body and Spirit,
Inc., and the special riders that are part of the program.  If  you have

Fjords in Berlin, singles driving championship in Poland

2008-02-12 Thread Linda Lehnert
This message is from: Linda Lehnert [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi, Folks,

Gruessen aus Guben an der Grenz mit Polen! (Greetings from Guben on the
border with Poland.) I was in Berlin for the weekend. Saturday I was going
to different bookstore than where I usually go and there was a street fair in
the neighborhood. Parking in Berlin is, at best, limited (worst I have ever
seen for a big city), so I drove around and around looking for a parking
space. When I came around the corner, there was a wagon filled with people
and pulled by two very nice Fjords. Since I had to watch the traffic and look
for a parking space, I couldn't look too much, but enjoyed seeing them. I
never did find a space or I would have gone to the street fair and taken a
ride and talked to the driver. Eike, do you know anyone in or near Berlin
with Fjords? I'm glad you and your wife enjoyed your trip to the US. Sunday
I went to the Tierpark, the zoo in East Berlin. The Communists called their
Tierpark because they thought zoo was a capitalist word (go figure!). The
Tierpark is on the edge of the city and is big, unlike the Berlin Zoo, the
original zoo, which is in west Berlin and right in the middle of town. On my
way back from the Raubtier Haus, called the Alfred Brehm Haus, there is a
section with domestic animals (Haustier). They had some interesting and
unusual breeds of cattle, sheep, goats, pigs and Esels 9(burros/donkeys) and 3
nice Fjords! They are supposed to have some Przewalski's Horses, but I didn't
see them. This Tierpark is big and is alot of walking for me, so I didn't get
to see everything. Unfortunately, going to my car after I had lunch, I fell
and hurt my knee and my wrist. I am having a hard time getting in with the
orthopedic surgeon and don't really want to go to the ER, so I'm not sure if
the wrist is broken or just a severe sprain, but everything, activity-wise, is
pure torture and it's very swollen. Fortunately, the knee is OK.

Nancy, where in Poland is the singles driving championship? I live right on
the border and regularly shop in Poland where they don't have the Euro and
prices are lower. Do you have any more information about it?

Bye.

Spooky horse driving/vacuuming static

2008-01-30 Thread M. Denmark
This message is from: M. Denmark [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi all,

I am a serious lurker (mother to 6 fjords who all ride and drive but even
when they have been off work a bit get a refresher course before going out
on the roads) and really enjoy all you e-list exploits and videos. Wow,
wow, wow!!! The Quadrille was fabulous.

I came out of lurkdom just to say that I thought Lisa's discussion, included
below just in case someone missed it, on driving a spooky or green horse was
wonderful. Even those of us who have been driving a while should read this
again to shake loose those cobwebs of complacency so we all stay safe.
Don't hand your fjord or any horse a loaded weapon such as an attached
carriage.

Now I need help: When vacuuming your dirty fjords how do you deal with the
static electricity that moving the wand over them generates? It is very
uncomfortable for either the fjordie or me when we get zapped. My fjords
tolerate it but sure give me a look that says figure out a better way. And
it really is static electricity and not an electrical problem. Is one brand
vacuum better than another with this problem? Anyone have a trick to get rid
of the static cling? I currently only have a shop vac to use.

And HI JEN...had been meaning to introduce myself to you since we're both TX
fjord owners.

 Hi List !

... ... ...

NAKED HORSEMANSHIP. In all forms.

Treeless saddles, shoeless hoofs, blinkerless bridles, and no bit driving.

All cool in the hands of experienced riders and drivers.totally alarming

in the thought process of the newbies.

Specifically, Jen is asking for suggestions about her new Fjord.
LOTS
of spirited conversation and good questions. There are no dumb questions
when
it comes to learning how to handle these Fjords, and esp. in the driving
arena. Love it...keep them comming.

S, since Jen is asking, I will try and give my .2, whatever it
is
worth. Not picking on you BTW, but you did ask for suggestions and I am
reading lots of advice out there to you from people who drive and those who
do
not. It applies to everyone who is also starting out in the driving world.
No one
thing works for every person, every horse.

First of all, you may have heard the expression, green on green
makes for black and blue We all started somewhere in driving and there are

things that both Jeff and I did that we would not repeat. I often tell
people that
the more I drive, the less I know. I am not a trainer, but do train our own
here and have helped a few others get started in singles, pairs, tandem or a

multiple's hitch. You are attempting to train her to something that you are
also
learning about. This usually does not make for good results, but added with
her spirit and questioning nature it does put off some red flags for me.

I agree Jen, that you will want to take those blinkers off. Also
take
off the bridle, harness and cart for now. Naked horsemanship ! In my humble
opinion, there is some work to do with your girl, to insure that she gets
the
best and right start in driving. This work cannot and should not be done
while
hitched. Period.
Go cover your cart with a tarp and do not torture yourself wanting to go for

a spin ! Maybe by summers endor fall even, plan to work on trottin her,
hitched. Walk 1,00 miles first, then when you ask for a trot..make
it 5
steps, then a whoa and stand. Rinse and repeat. It is time spent that you
cannot go back to if there is a wreck.

A sensitive and reactive horse ( per your discription ) and one who
likes to look around, bolt forward spook and run forward till you

( or someone else cause you are on your knees in the cart, OMG, ) can get
her pulled back to a stop is simply not ready to drive down the road.
She might be sometime, but it will depend on the right amount of pre-driving

training and de-sensitising you are able to do with her. You have been
lucky. You
do not let her learn these things while hitched and now risking hers, yours
and everyone she may come into contact with's life.

Im not talking about ground driving her in endless circles either.
Although you are riding her.I have some concerns about her conditioning,

overall fitness and reactive habits. You CAN improve her in these ways
greatly, and
you will find that with more time spent out of the cart and on basic driving

manners and rules of thumb, she may make a very wonderful driving horse. She

might not be a driving horse. I have a few here that I would not hitch if
you
handed me a million dollars. If she continues to spook forward and require
people pulling her to a stop after she runs forward, even 10 ft. I predict
that she
will also, sooner than later, include a full blown runaway. She will get
tired of telling you that she

 Hi List !

Recovered from our great trip to KY. Weather is deteriorating today, so
stuck inside, catching up on e-mail. I have been following loosely, a thread on
the Carriage Driving list about bitless driving, and it seems to follow the
current thought about :

believe
me. She is not whisperingshe is yelling. Listen to her. Take it
SLOWERwork on all lifes scary things on the ground, in safe enclosed areas,
not
attached to a cart.

You mentioned once, a driving trainer. Do you still have access to them ?
There are also some good books and videos on training and driving a horse. If
nothing else, please get yourself some driving lessons from ( hopefully )
well qualified driving people. Hook yourself up with local clubs and join the
American Driving Society , ( ADS ) Also consider joining the NFHR to begin
recieving the Fjord Herald. All of these resources will help you find the tools
to
work with her yourself. Join the Carriage Driving list, it is a wealth of
information, and the Nations top drivers post there. If you ask for advice
there,
people will answer you and take time to help.

As far, right now as it go's with your girl, I would begin in a much
slower pace for both of you. Some good rules of basic driving include a WHOA
and
STAND. I personally would not hitch a horse without a great command of both.
It is an inflexible rule, but it will save
