[Flexradio] FMT Tonight

2017-04-05 Thread Michael Walker
If you want to give a try at the Frequency Measurement Test, you might want
to review this.

https://community.flexradio.com/flexradio/topics/arrl-fmt-tonight-getting-the-most-accurate-frequency

If you have a 6300 like me or something older, have a read with this:

http://physics.princeton.edu/pulsar/K1JT/FMT_User.pdf

If you already have a digital mode operational, It is pretty straight
forward.

Good luck. You should have no issue making a reading well past 1Hz.

Re: [Flexradio] Radio

2017-03-13 Thread Michael Walker
You can always build your own T/R switch. They are pretty simple.

The early days (after spark gap), I used one for my DX40 and HR10B receiver.

I made a LOT of CW contacts with that pair.

Re: [Flexradio] Flexradio] digital signals

2017-01-10 Thread Michael Babineau
Danno :

One question. Are you using Virtual Audio Cable to link HRD to PowerSDR or are
you using a solution involving external cables from the computer to the
Flex-3000 for audio?
It is not clear from the description of your setup.

VAC is a much safer solution as it will reduce the chance of RF or noise
sneaking into the audio lines and if you go this route you can’t actually use
USB/LSB modes
because I don’t think that PowerSDR will show the controls to adjust levels for
VAC.

One other reason why you don’t want to use USB/LSB modes is that it will impact
HRDs ability to decode digital signals. On the Flex the digital modes are there
because
unlike USB/LSB they do minimal processing (i.e. mucking around) on both
incoming and outgoing signal. It doesn’t matter if the original bit streams are
“corrupted slightly”
for SSB as the intent is to improve intelligibility on both TX and RX … but
preserving bit integrity does matter when you are encoding or decoding a
digital data stream.
(This topic is covered in the PowerSDR manual).

Cheers

[Flexradio] The Flex 6300 problem?

2015-05-14 Thread Michael
I wonder if anyone having a Flex 6300 could check this out for me. I notice
if I merely key the radio via the MOX button (NO microphone connected) with
my mic gain at least half way up I can see a deflection of audio on the band
scope. This is particularly noticeable if one goes to the radio's setup and
engages the 20db gain and again simply keys the radio via the mox button. I
can hear a hum too if I monitor in a second radio or in the Flex's monitor .
However this has never been pointed out during an actual on air QSO even if
I am running high power. I am wondering if this is normal or whether I
should send in the radio for service. Dudley is also checking this out. If I
received 'on air' hum reports the situation for repair would be obvious but
I haven't received any such reports.

Thanks

[Flexradio] Wiki offline? Need WSPR 60m help please

2015-05-12 Thread Michael Ruttenberg
Hi all

I have been trying to access the wiki at Neal's site(
flexradiowiki.abrohamnealsoftware.com) which I had bookmarked from a while
back and also on http://FlexRadioWiki.com, to which I get a timeout error.

First question: Is the wiki alive somewhere?

2nd question, if the wiki is dead, I need some help with WPSR on my
Flex3000 on 60m please.

I can RX okay (okay so not much received) but if the WSPR software goes to
TX and I'm in DIGU mode, it says I'm out of band and chucks me out
unceremoniously with a warning of TX out of band and forced STOP. My TX
filter is 2900 high, 200 low, which is too wide for the 60m channel. I'm in
5.28850 listening to around 1khz of the channel.

If I set my HIGH to be say 1200 and my low to be 200, do i have to reset
this back to 2900 high every time I want to use SSB? It would be a pain to
have to amend the PSDR settings every time I change modes.

PSDR v2.7.2 (TURFed with Jurgen's help)

Re: [Flexradio] Griffen Power Mate

2015-03-19 Thread Michael Babineau
Randy :

I am in the same boat with the Powemate except I am running WIN 8.1.

I did a bit of “Googling” and found this which might be helpful :

-
For any of the reviewers stating that the PowerMate does not work with Windows
7 64-bit, did you remember to configure it? Once you install the newest
driver/software package from Griffin's support page, currently v2.0.1 -- []

1. Install the software
2. Plug in the PowerMate
3. In Windows 7 navigate to your start menu and look for the newly installed
application titled PowerMate
4. In the PowerMate Editor application you should see any PowerMate devices
you've connected to your computer in the lower left corner.
5. Right click the PowerMate you want to edit and left click on Configure
6. Mess with settings or just click Use Global Settings Only
7. Modify global settings or enjoy as is.

It's that easy Enjoy your new PowerMate!

And this also has some useful info :

The Driver Issues:

Folks are having what they believe to be driver issues, but there's a
misconception here. This hardware doesn't come with or need any driver which
Windows doesn't already have. Specifically, the powermate uses HIDUSB.SYS which
is a default Windows driver for all Human Interface Devices, such as mice,
trackballs, keyboards, etc.. Aside from this default OS driver, the only thing
the powermate requires is the program itself (along with the plugins it comes
with), which runs as a memory-resident program.

What might be occuring is the program may not function well with Windows 7, I
haven't tried it yet on my Windows 7 system. However, what I believe is most
likely the actual problem, is how Windows 7 uses HID USB devices, as it's a
smidge different from XP. There's a different level of security intepretation
when software is run. I will update the review once I test this on Windows 7,
but as a general rule of thumb, try this:

* Run the powermate program (powermate.exe) in Administrator Mode (right-click,
choose Run as Administrator..)

* Make sure the powermate is plugged into a usb2/3 port which has full power
available, you can always try a different port (don't use USB extension cables!)

Let me know if this works. I will try again on WIN8.1 when I get a chance.

Re: [Flexradio] using a tokyo-hipower 100 watt amp with the 1500

2014-12-23 Thread Michael Babineau
Dale :

I use the HL-45B with my Flex-1500 and there is no option for RF-sensing with
the HL-45B so it must be hard keyed via the PTT line
on the Flexwire I/O interface. FWIW, I read in a forum somewhere that Tokyo
High Power recommended a 10ms Delay between triggering
PTT and application of RF to this amp. I am not sure if this would also be the
case for the THP HL-100bdx, but it might be worth looking into.

If you want to key the amp via the Flexwire I/O, in addition to the actual
physical connection between the amp and the Flex-1500, there is some minor
configuration needed in PowerSDR. In PowerSDR you need to click on ANTENNA at
the top of the main form.
This brings up a dialog box that has a FlexWire PTT Out section at the bottom.
ENABLED must be selected. If you determine that a delay is necessary then
DELAY (ms) must also be selected with a value of 0 (this value would be 10
for the Flex-1500/THP HL-45B combo).

THP made some great amplifiers, it is too bad about their demise. These amps
are very well designed and constructed and I expect my HL-45B to outlive me ;-)

Michael VE3WMB

P.S. I was a bit concerned at first that a 10 ms delay would truncate the first
DIT on CW once I did the timing calculations I concluded that it is not an
issue.

Re: [Flexradio] [FlexRadio] 5000A Low Output

2014-11-08 Thread Michael Walker
Most of these problems show up external to the radio, so make sure you do
as much testing by changing things such as patch cables, tuners, antenna
switches, etc.

You do want to make sure you are testing into a dummy load on a very simple
setup with only the radio, wattmeter and dummy load. If that is ok and
your number are about 90 watts or more, then you can start to look
elsewhere.

Make sure the tuner is turned off in the 5K if it is one or you have one.

I hope that helps,

Re: [Flexradio] Antenna tuner

2014-11-03 Thread Michael Walker
Bill

A few things. If the connector is loose, then take some time and open up
the case and have a look. Don't worry, it won't bite you. Look for a
broken lead to the board. Lots of electronic problems like this are a
physical problem.

To see if there is a bad connection, connect your radio to your antenna and
listen to HF with the radio powered on and PowerSDR running. Wiggle the
connector and if it is bad, you will certainly hear it on your speaker as
the background noise will change by the same amount as your wiggling the
bnc connector.

Also make sure you don't have a bad jumper cable or even a problem with
your antenna. You may need some other radio or analyzer to test to check.

If it is broken, or doesn't look right, you can always call and talk to the
great guys at Flex. I'm sure they will get you all fixed up.

If you chose to use a different tuner, like and SGC or LDG, you can always
do that. You just have to make sure you leave your Flex tuner in bypass.

[Flexradio] Is there a way to force RTTY to DIGU

2014-09-26 Thread Michael Ruttenberg
Hi all

I am using K0VM's setup instructions from the wiki (thanks Al).

RTTY is forced to DIGL, but personally I prefer DIGU.
I can force it manually to DIGU and using MMVari in N1MM to RTTY-U but then
the spots are all off on the bandmap.

Is there a way to have the mode always in DIGU and what is forcing it to
DIGL? MixW I always had in DIGU, but then I had no bandmap.

Re: [Flexradio] Lightning Strikes

2014-07-17 Thread Michael Walker
Ouch, that is too bad.

If you haven't filed a claim on your house insurance, you need to do that
now. They will take care of determining what has failed. At least, that
is what I did on a hydro surge. This is why you pay for it.

For you 5000, the easiest test is to try another computer. However, if the
ethernet card is gone, it will have taken most other things on the bus.
But, sadly it is a crap shoot.

The 5000 should be written off by your insurance company as there is no way
to be 100% that you can repair it back to factory specs. It just isn't
practical at all.

I say all the above as an ex Manager of a Ham Radio Store. We would get
one of these per week and everyone was handled by the insurance. We never
tried to repair anything as there was no way to guarantee it. They also
have their professionals who do this.

We never had any trouble with any claims either.

Again, sorry to hear that. It is a pain in the butt, but you should come
out ok.

Re: [Flexradio] Fwd: PowerSDR freezing

2014-07-15 Thread Michael Walker
Craig

A couple of thoughts that I am sure that have been mentioned before. Some
good people have come up with some good ideas. I'm sure that Neal will
also recommend the following as we happen to think alike.

The radio works on another computer, so that totally eliminates the radio
and the associated cables (assuming you used the same firewire cable).

Sadly, you don't have any restore points to go back to, so that would be my
next suggestion.

As you are finding out, Windows is very hard to diagnose problems like
this. You can look at the event viewer (I don't thin anyone mentioned that
so far) and see what happens just before PSDR freezes. That might give a
clue and I would look in the video card area.

Software doesn't expires or where out, so that leaves ... something in the
system changed in the software. It could be a windows update, so other
software got installed or something damaged the firewire card. It could
also be a memory issue, but not likely.

Here are your options based on facts

   - Change the firewire card to another vendor
   - Update your video card driver -PowerSDR is very powerful user of the
   video system
   - Investigate the event viewer and see whats up and what happened
   - See what was installed in the last weeks leading up to the failure
   - Reinstall Windows from scratch - this will have a 95% success rate of
fixing things - if not, then it 100% a hardware issue
   - Spend $350 on a new computer. Yes, the may come with Windows 8.1, but
that isn't a big issue (speaking from experience and watching an 8 minute
video on how to actually used Metro. :) ) -- this has a 95% success rate
too -- assuming you can get it to support a firewire card
   - Upgrade to a Flex 6300 (that is what I did)

My 2 cents Canadian

I had this with my 3000 you'd hear the bing-bong of a device
disconnection and it would hang, it was my cable. I changed the one it came
with for another and never had a problem until it was sold for a 6300.

Mine had been to Flex in Germany for a repair - they changed some
components to do with the FW port. I assume this to be a common issue as
 they'd seen it before.

The lead has probably caused issues internally before the unit required

 Dudley,

I agree. Our club had an Astron RM-35 that had the series pass transistor
fail (short). The output voltage went to the maximum provided by the
transformer the 2 rigs connected to it were damaged. The Yaesu FT-950
 was
repairable, but a Yaesu FM rig was not economical to repair.

A problem with linear supplies is that if the series transistor fails, the
result is a serious over-voltage situation.

The moral of the story is that every time you chop some something (like a
switching supply), you create noise. It is in the math. This is why the
Alinco has a adjustable frequency option to move the birdies.

The old IRON Astrons are much quieter by design. You aren't chopping
anything. :)

Yep, you could do that. But, I had a $1000 12v 50 amp commercial supply
fail at my repeater site (not lightning related) and it took out 5
repeaters. The name of the PS fails me at the moment. So, it can happen
at any level.

The point is all hardware fails and there are no guarantees.

Like others, I have many astrons that have never been turned off (almost)
for almost decades. Not one of them have taken out a radio.

If you are really really concerned, run off a 12v battery and then float
charge that. That is the closest to a solid solution and you'll never have
an overvoltage issue.

There is no end to this discussion, so can we end it?

  - Wider panadapter bandwidth allows you to see more at a glance
  - Lower TX IMD
  - Much less RF intrusion into the Signature's chassis
Very good reasons if those things are a problem for him. The wider
 panadapter might be compelling.

  Issues:

  - The DSP isn't that much different than PSDR, so it isn't going to
sound much different than your 5K until sometime around the end of the
 year.

These are the differences today, as I see them. Best of luck with your
 purchasing decision.

The 6300 is clearly cleaner and more elegant, but from a day to day

killer app in the 6300 for the owner of a 5000a.

I have had Flex rigs from the first 1000 kit to my current
5000a. I have downloaded all the spec sheets, that are out there, and read
all the beta testing remarks from the various testers. None of which really
tell me much about how the 6300 will work out in the real world, under day
to day hamming. I have not seen any comparisons to the performance of the
6300/5000a, weather they be suggested improvements over the 5000a or even
improvements based on the new 6300's technology.
The 6300, looks great on paper and the engineering write-ups,
but what will I gain in REAL LIFEday to day operation over my 5000a. Iam
not a con tester, like to work dx and also rag chew. I do little CW any
longer, arthritis in the fingers, the 5000a could be easily passed up, for
 this mode.
I already have a big investment in the computer,I-7 ,to run the
5000a, which of course would run the 6300 also,so thats a wash. I like the
audio on my 5000a, use a balanced condenser mic and have received comments
on the pleasant audio. Would have to go back to the unbalanced on the 6300.
I run a hex beam and do not need the tuner ,but I also run a
vertical and a OCF dipole for 160 to 80 meters which I do need the tuner on
 the 5000a for.
I guess Iam looking for reasons to dump the 5000a and move UP

I agree with Patrick.

Excellent hardware and the software to go with it.

Writing software like this is far from trivial. I wouldn't even hazard a
guess on the thousands of lines of code or even the thousands of man hours
involved to get to the point that you can release a product out the door to
the user base. By comparison, the hardware part is easy.

Those that write the software have homes, families, and kids that need to
go through college. They all need to be paid.

What gets lost is that while software doesn't look like the hardware you
own, the time and effort to product it does cost money.

What you have never expires. No different from what you use today on a
'iron' type of radio. Even some TS440s are still running despite all the
PLL issues they had. :)

Everyone's option continues to be the same. Vote with your wallet. (As
Greg J. told me on the phone yesterday. If you want to make a little money
in Ham Radio, start with a lot of money. So true).

Hi All

I have mine on the block as well as I think I may move up to the 6300.

Flex 3000
Firewire Cable
Power Cable
Hand Mic

$1300 including Shipping for the US, but I need to know before Wednesday

For my Canadian friends, $1440 with the US conversion.

I have been waiting for the 6300 so I can start to run it in a remote base.

Thanks Dale

I fully suspect that could be the case. The video would be over remote
desktop, so that will also be a challenge. I 'hope' I can dial down the
frame rate for remote operation.

I currently use a TS480 and RemoteRig, but I really want to get the Flex at
the remote site.

I agree. Video will be the challenge.

I am on a real cleaning spree. I am also selling my SGC500 and I am going
to replace it with a KPA500. I could go the KP3/0 route, but I haven't
gotten there yet. :)

Many thanks for your insite.

Good points. I have been remoting since 2006 and my solution with a TS480

For reasons I won't bore you with, lack of a really good remote power
on/off capability -- such as Elecraft unquestionably has for 6300 scale
money -- may be a deal breaker for this long time Flex owner as far as the
 6000 series goes.

I still have no solution for the 5000 (sticking a toothpick into the on/off
switch is not a serious answer -- I want and need to do power sequencing).

Where does the 6000 series really sit with this? I can't tell. Remote
operation is becoming increasingly important -- and popular. But, those
that seem to know (one of whom has been doing remote operations since long
before it became popular and owned a 5000) is very dismissive of the
current state of the Flex art here for both the 5000 and 6000. That long
time ham moved on to Elecraft and I've seen his shack. It works and works
 like a dream.

The 6000 series should work. It's an internet addressable device. I
should be able to remote everything that counts now. But, I need the
 physical power control and sequencing.

I'd even pay a decent amount of money for a factory-supported, optional
add-on. Something where I could hook up a USB cable or even just a relay
cable and do the on/off processing. Or, supply power and issue a CAT
command. Many things would be suitable. But, they have to be serious
excursions into the power aspect of it. My shack and radio needs to be
powered off when not in use. I will be able to leave only one or two very
 low power (cell phone level) devices powered on when I am not operating;
they can run the on sequencing when I need it. The radio itself must be
 power sequenced.

Re: [Flexradio] Ape SWR

2014-04-16 Thread Michael Walker
Hi Dave

What can happen is that if you have common mode currents, then the RF on
the feedline can affect the SWR readings on your radio.Do you have any
mix 31 chokes on the feedline? I have seen this happen on my screwdriver
antenna and the moment I choked the feedline and the DC control lines ALL
my problems went away.

If this is on 40 or 80M and a screwdriver antenna, you will require a small
shunt on the feed point to the antenna to improve the match. Again, you
didn't mention which band this was happening on. 40M tends to be the
problem band at times.

Personally, I would recommend that you get the antenna tuned to 50 ohms and
not use the tuner on the 3000. I think your performance might improve.

I'm not exactly sure why things changed overnight, but that does happen and
the is the magic of RF. It is likely a case your Screwdriver not in the
exact same tuning place it was before. I doubt this is a radio problem at
all. You can test it by seeing if you can tune into a resistive 25 or 100
ohm load.

Just thinking out loud.

Twice now I have had a situation in which activating TUN on my Flex3K will
produce a wildly gyrating (up and down) SWR on my tunable antenna (or on
some bands, a solid 1.0 with no variation even with a wildly out of tune

The first time I tried rebooting the PC and totally powering off the radio
(no input voltage at all, not just no on button) for a few minutes, neither
helped, but powering everything off overnight fixed the problem. Then
all was fine for a week or so.

Tonight it happened again. Is my radio broken? Should I send it back

[Flexradio] Weird 1500 operation

2014-03-10 Thread Michael Walker
I'm out in the wilds of Alberta (ve6 land) with Ken va3sk.

We have a 1500 with us and it works on 1 computer and not the other.

So, on the failing one, we have no audio on the radio (but we do on VAC)
and no RF out.

I have tried to do a complete uninstall/reinstall, but no joy. Even a
database reset didn't help. This includes doing:

   - uninstall
   - delete the flex directory from program files
   - reboot
   - reinstall
   - reboot
   - still fails

I know that it is an installation issue.

Tim, how do I totally remove everything? What are the registry settings
that I need to go find to delete.

Both computers are w7/64. One works great (other than bad CW) and the
other fails poorly.

Re: [Flexradio] DSP NR

2014-02-24 Thread Michael Walker
I would disagree on both the Scope and the NR.

I have had a Flex for many years. The NR has made a difference and is
certainly better than the NR on any other radio that I have used. The NR
is not plug and play, nor it is it locked down that those hard coded units
I have with very little adjustment. NR is a very complicated algorithm and
most noises are not the same. However, the use of the NR and a frequency
designed receiving antenna have made the largest difference in my ability
to hear things.

As for the Scope, I wouldn't live without it. The Histogram is very useful
when watching other stations on their audio distribution and is certainly
better then anything else. In my 6M work, it is invaluable for spotting
signals, although the spurs do drive me crazy at times.

As for AM, I never use it as I personally find it a waste of bandwidth, but
that is just me. I personally feel that our goal is to get the information
of a QSO across the ether and you don't need 5Khz to do that. I'm not
trying to upset the AM guys, just my view of AM, while very historic, is
just not efficient. It is good that we have so many options even including
DV.

For those of you who don't like the NR or don't like the Scope, then why
are you still using the radio and have not moved on to something else?

Re: [Flexradio] DSP NR

2014-02-23 Thread Michael Walker
I find the biggest adjustment I use other than playing with the taps is
AGC-T, but I am sure you have tried that already.

I have had success with knocking down noise in my plasma tv infected home
station.

I don't have the same issue with my remote base, and there I use just a
TS480 which hears so much more as the noise floor is just that much better.

I have been using the Flex 5K with Win7 64bit running on an i7 with 12 gb
memory for about 5 years now. Have upgraded software at least 4 major
revisions now running v2.7.2 PowerSDR. This is an awsome radio and my
 best
radio. Currently have 2 other HF radios: IC7800 and TS2000 and have had
many Kenwood and Yaesu radios over the years.

There is one area where the Flex 5K falls down and has not really ever
worked. The DSP noise reduction is useless. Over the years I have not
 seen
any situation where switching on NR improves the ability to copy a weak
signal. The IC7800 DSP NR is FAR superior. When I purchased the Flex at
 the
Boxborough Ma hamfest the canned demonstration showed incredible signal
improvement using NR. So I wonder when the NR will ever be improved to at
  least the usable state.

BTW I've tried every conceivable setting on the DSP and Audio config.
 pages,
have lots of processing power and lots of experience with SDR's. I work
 with
the most expensive SDR everyday of the week at my job: The General
Dynamics DMR, at $500K per copy this isn't comparable but my point is I'm
not new to SDR. That said if I'm missing something I'd like to hear from
others who may have had a different experience. Again I think this is a
 great
radio just not great DSP NR.

With my Flex-1500 I had been successfully running Powersdr on a late-2009

Core Solo Mini’s are quite rare) so you should be fine.

One of the reasons that Macs run Windows quit well is that you can’t buy a Mac
with Windows pre installed, so you have to do a clean install. You don't
end up with all of the software junk that the computer vendors include with new
PCs. Also I think that the Mac Windows drivers are quite good, so Mac's make a
decent
and stable platform to run Windows.

Which Flex Radio are you thinking of ?

Good morning,

I subscribed to this list because I am considering a Flex-radio for my
next purchase. I'm wondering if my present computer is adequate. I am
running Windows 7/64 bit on a Mac-Mini. Yes, I am one of those. I

the PC hardware. No, I'm not trying to start a discussion about this

[Flexradio] Flex-1500 and THP HL45B problem with higher speed CW ?

2014-01-22 Thread Michael Babineau
I just recently acquired a Tokyo Hy-Power HL45B for use with my Flex-1500. I
also have an interface cable to
allow me to key the amp from the Flexwire I/O connector on the rear of the rig.

From what I have read, Tokyo Hy-Power recommends using a TX Out Delay of 10MS
after keying the Amplifier
and before applying RF.

https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/FlexRadio/conversations/messages/10435

This shouldn’t be an issue on SSB but if I am operating CW, according to my
rough calculations the on-time for a DIT will be 10ms in
duration for code speeds in the range of 20 to 30WPM so I think that this means
that I will be losing the first DIT on any
CW transmission.

Has anyone noticed this issue using the HL45B with a Flex-1500 on CW ?

I think that my WINkeyer USB may be able to compensate for this but a good
question to ask is does the Flex-1500 internal keyer take this
into account when AntennaFlexWire PTT Out Enabled [ON], Delay [10ms] is set,
and perhaps compensate for it .. or am I asking for too much ?

Re: [Flexradio] Flex-1500 and THP HL45B problem with higher speed CW ?

2014-01-22 Thread Michael Babineau
As it turns out, the source I found on the internet for “Dit duration” was
inaccurate so my
quick and dirty calculations were out by a factor of ten.

What I know know is the correct formula for calculating a “Dit duration” is
1200/WPM (this is just the
on-time, not including the trailing inter-element pause).

So at 20 WPM the on-time for a DIT is 60ms not 6 ms as I had originally
thought. At 30WPM it is 40ms.
Usually I send in about the range of 20 to 25 so I am looking at about 50ms for
a DIT.
If I truncate the leading DIT by 10ms because of the 10ms PTT Out Delay I have
set in PowerSDR, I suspect
that it will still sound like a DIT as it is only being shortened by 1/5.

I am now thinking that this is likely a non-issue.

set, and perhaps compensate for it .. or am I asking for too much ?

[Flexradio] LP100 Plot Unable to Cause PowerSDR Flex3000 to Generate Signal

2014-01-21 Thread Michael Logan, KB7IUV
I have an LP100A that I am attempting to plot my SWR with. The PLot
program talks top the PowerSDR okay and can set the frequency but it
just seems to turn on the MOX which does not generate a signal unless
you're modulating some audio or pressing a key.

Has anyone got this to work successfully? Is there some something I can
do to cause it to use the TUNE command instead?

Thanks to the group in advance.

I experienced a lock up on transmit near the end of an hour+ long rag chew QSO

my Flex-1500 and PowerSDR 2.7.2. I was using an external keyer, but I
encountered some
problems with dirty contacts on my paddles so I switched over to my bug to
finish off the QSO.

I was sending mid-sentence and suddenly found that I could no longer key the
rig.
Stopping and re-Starting Power SDR fixed it and I was then able to complete the
QSO without issues.
This is the first time I have encountered this. I am using a quad-core AMD

Has anyone had a problem with the internal keyer locking up. Using PWR
SDR 2.7.2 and Flex 1500 - At times, the keyer becomes stuck in dits or

USB is set to a conservative value and audio buffer is at 512

If you chat with the guys that run WSPR, they all use receiving loops of

this location for over twenty-six years (both replaced with a new version
or repaired at least once) and they have taken my DXCC total from 130 or so
when we moved here to 347. This location is electrically quiet; for example
the 20 meter noise floor near 14070 is -125 dBm at the moment. At times
connecting an antenna to the Flex-1500 increases the NF only by 6 dB
greater than an when on a dummy load.

When I move to town due to age or medical condition, if I can still play
radio, I probably will try a magnetic loop, a HEX beam, and another HF-2V
if there's room. The one thing I have NOT mentioned and something to
consider is the required separation between the TX antenna and the K9AY
Loop System I think its 100 feet if you operate QRO, but you should
read the documentation to avoid damage to the pre-amp or your receiver. As
my FLEX-1500 is operated as receive only and as the sub-receiver of an
OMNI-VII and Titan-425 station, I made sure I had more than the minimum
distance and put a RF limiter in the RX line. YMMV...

Am I missing something ?

I thought that when you installed a new PowerSDR release that it doesn’t touch
the previous
version? If that is that case there is nothing to be lost by “trying” the new
version. If it is not to your liking you just go back
to using the previously installed version of PowerSDR. I guess that the only
caveat is that you can’t undo a firmware update
to the rig, which I believe that this new version of PowerSDR applies. I
believe that the firmware is backward compatible with
a previous version of PowerSDR.

[Flexradio] PowerSDR-DataTransfer initially didn't install on WIN 8.1

2013-12-20 Thread Michael Babineau
I just installed PowerSDR v.2.7.2 and it seems to be running fine with my 1500.
PowerSDR-DataTransfer seems to have worked fine
once I managed to get it installed.

I had a problem with the 2.7.2 integrated installer as it didn’t install
PowerSDR-DataTransfer on my Windows 8.1 system.
Unfortunately I didn’t manage to grab the error dialog that came up. PowerSDR
itself installed fine.

I had to go back to the earlier email from Flex regarding the update to
PowerSDR-Data transfer and download
the installer for it separately. This was from :

http://support.flex-radio.com/Downloads.aspx?id=435

Once I ran the PowerSDR-DataTransfer installer the utility installed and worked
fine.
I am not sure if anyone else using Windows 8.1 has seen this problem?

My WIN 8.1 system is pretty clean as it is a very new machine and is really
only used to run PowerSDR.
I wish I would have grabbed a screen shot when the error dialog came up on the
initial install.

To recreate:

1)Go to 20 meters and set Preamp to Pre2'
2)Go to 40 meters and set Preamp to Pre1
3)Go back to 20 meters, Preamp shows Pre1 (but is is not really)
4)Set Preamp to Pre2 notice the lack of difference (because it
really is still on Pre2)

5)Set Preamp to Pre1 and notice the difference.

Here's another:

1)For 20 meters and 15 meters, set Preamp to Pre2
2)Go back to 40 meters and make sure its still on Pre1
3)Go back to 20 meters and notice it says Pre1 (even though you
left it at Pre2)

4)Go to 15 meters and notice it changes to Pre2
5)Go to 20 meters and notice it now says Pre2 like it should.

Conclusion: The display of the actual preamp setting seems to no
coincide with actual setting. Anyone else see this?

  Dear Joe,
if you are definitely sure you wouldn't ever need any other radio
and any higher power than your 100 W, the internal tuner could be
 a good choice.
If you are seeing changes of radio or power even only in the
distant future, an external tuner is first choice.
Decide yourself whether to rely on electronics but save time,
e.g. in contests, or to spend 5 secs more on a manual tuner
(and even this may be the other way around pending on device and
 software).
I have used the good old Heathkit 2060 Tuner with good results
(keep the coil and roller in good condx),
the Tokyo Hi Power 2000 with better results (fixed coil connections,
but all bands tuneable) and the manual Palstar 5K to perhaps better
results (just new - no experience yet).
The advertising on Palstar is overdoing a bit.
For example the Hi Power 2000 has ball bearings for his axles
but not so on the Palstar (American workmanship I read in advertisings).
Don't go for the old Daiwa 1000 and 2000 semiautomatics.

 Hope it helps.

Bob .. the sidetone level (same as Monitor level for SSB .. useful when using a
double-sided headset) can be modified in
two different ways.

If you got to SETUP/Transmit You will see something labelled Monitor TX
AF that is what you want to change.
Playing with it this morning I discovered another way to do this that was
previously unknown to me.

If you transmit a carrier in CW (or hit the TUNE button) The AF control near
the upper left of the PSDR display
switches to control the Monitor (i.e. Sidetone) level. So as long as you are
transmitting a carrier, varying the AF level
changes the sidetone volume level.

Also note that the DRIVE control behaves in a similar manner.
Normally adjusting DRIVE controls the % of RF Power out, but if you adjust
this after clicking on TUNE
then you are setting the DRIVE level just for TUNE. This is a neat feature that
allows you to reduce
your output power while tuning your antenna, without messing with normal DRIVE
setting.

I hope that this helps. Best of luck with your 1500.

Re: [Flexradio] Flex 1500 Newbie problems Xmitwaveshape

2013-11-17 Thread Michael Babineau
2) On CW it's the latency thing.. horrible noticeable delay between key
down and sidetone.. and no audio level control on the sidetone!.. Just not
nice.. never had this latency before on any analogue rig I have owned.
Someone said its been fixed.. either I have not set it up properly or they
are not CW operators!

Robert :

PowerSDR is configured so that it will run on almost any Windows computer but
there are
some settings that need to be adjusted for CW to work properly on most
computers.

If you read the Flex-1500 manual section on CW and the Flex-1500 part of the
PowerSDR release notes (Page 12)
they document quite well the three main things that potentially need to be
adjusted in PowerSDR to allow for smooth CW operation on the Flex-1500.
(Note that you must STOP PowerSDR to make these changes and then START again to
determine how effective the changes are. )

The first thing is adjusting the USB Driver Buffer setting. This is accessed
via Setup/General/Options.
It is a slider the goes from Conservative on the left to Aggressive on the
Right. You want to make it as aggressive as you can without causing
drop-outs or distortion in your receive audio. My suggestion is to adjust the
slider only one position to the right
at the time, exit the SETUP, START PowerSDR and listen to a station for a while
to determine if the change in settings is causing an
issues with receive audio. Repeat this process over and over until you either
get to the most Aggressive Setting (unlikely) or you start to hear
audio drop out or significant distortion. At that point back it off one
position. Resist the temptation to go to the most aggressive setting first as
it may cause
PowerSDR to hang up or quit (my experience).

The second parameter is the Audio Buffer size.
Repeat the same procedure as above (i.e stopping PowerSDR, but this time
changing the setting to one smaller then Starting PowerSDR).
Setup/Audio Buffer Size - You want this to be the smallest value that doesn't
cause drop- outs or distortion on receive. ( i.e. 256 or 128 if possible, but
512 is ok).

Setup/DSP Buffer Size, CW RX (should be 2048) only reduce this if necessary to
further diminish sidetone delay. Changing this value to a smaller one will have
an
impact on the performance of the narrower CW RX filters. I wouldn't suggest
going any smaller than 1024 otherwise you are diminishing performance of
the receiver.

Adjusting the above three settings should give you reasonable performance on CW
with no noticeable sidetone delay. For anyone only using a Dual core machine,
if this isn't enough there are a couple of other tricks that help, but I only
suggest trying these as a last resort.

SETUP/DISPLAY Refresh Rates Main Display FPS (normally 15, can be reduced to 7
with no ill effects). Reducing this should improve the CW performance as it
halves the refresh rate on the Panadaptor display, which is quite CPU intensive.

If you are really just running PowerSDR (which is what I suggest on a dual core
machine) then you can increase the Process Priority by a notch with no ill
effects.
SETUP/GENERAL/OPTIONS Process Priority (I don't recommend going with a setting
higher than Above Normal or High, the default setting is Normal).

One other thing worth mentioning is that if you are using the internal keyer in
the Flex-1500, be aware that if you enable Iambic sending
it will default to Iambic A. Many people (myself included) learned Iambic B
and I couldn't send with Iambic A if my life depended on it.
The keyer settings are accessed via Setup/General/DSP .

You’ll never get “Ten-Tec QSK” out of a Flex-1500 (it is semi-break in only)
but with a few minor adjustments to PowerSDR , running on a suitable computer,
you should be able to
achieve reasonable break-in performance that is comparable to other QRP rigs
such as the Yaesu FT-817.

I don't remember offhand where the PowerSDR setting is for Monitor Volume (i.e.
Sidetone level). There is one. I would really like to see this show up in the
same area of the screen where
the CW speed is when in CW mode. Currently this control is hidden away. I am
not near my Windows PC at the moment .. but if no one posts a follow up I will
let you know what the control is
called and where to access it.

Cheers

Michael VE3WMB / VA2NB

P.S, I hope that you get your waveform issues sorted out.

[Flexradio] PSDR and Windows 8.1

2013-11-08 Thread Michael Babineau
I received a notification the other day that I can download the Windows 8.1
update for my laptop for free.

So far PowerSDR has been running well for me under WIN 8, so I am wondering if
I am tempting fate by
updating my machine with WIN 8.1 ? Are there any known issues with running the
current version of PSDR
with WIN 8.1 ?

Re: [Flexradio] Good laptop for Flex 3000?

I used to use a Dell D630 which was marginal for speed.
Now using the Lenovo T420 eh oh is plenty fast enough. Has the optimal FireWire
port fitted but it was flimsy so out in a FireWire 800 expresscard and all is
well, after many many driver updates.

I'm considering the idea of using a laptop with my 3000 for portable ops.
Seems finding a decent laptop with an ExpressCard port for Firewire isn't
easy. I've looked at yard sales and today at a local hamfest. No joy.

Curious what others are using to run PowerSDR on a laptop? I'm not
interested in anything Windows 8, and I'm not interested in spending a lot
of money. I do remember the 1000 days using a Pentium IV and how I really
had to tune the computer to make everything work well :) I suppose a dual

how much L2 or L3 cache these processors even have.

Any recommendations from others that are successfully using a laptop with
 PowerSDR are welcome. Thanks.

I'm glad you enjoyed it. Personally, it is about getting the message
through.

I just ran CQWW and I know that if I had not used the HC5 element (really
sharp and annoying) there are many stations that would have not copied me.

I also can honestly say that those that were using a DX like shaping, I had
problems copying.

There is no 1 perfect element (just like a swiss army knife). You need
different 'shapes' for different tasks.

Listen to this about the HC6. Pay attention to how each of his shapes
sound. http://www.heilsound.com/amateur/press/hc6.mp3

I recorded all of my 1600 QSO's from CQWW. I will try to find some great
DX audio and some really bad DX audio. It won't be until next week though.
When I do, I will share them.

Re: [Flexradio] Flex 3000 and DXEngineering RTR-1A ReceiveAntenna Interface

2013-10-28 Thread Michael Walker
Hi Bruce

It is never $10. :) Part of it is the time and money to source the parts,
build it, mount it in a box, etc. While I say the same thing from time to
time, it is part of 'buying time'.

Bruce, do you have a QSK solid state design sketched you would like to
share with us to use? I would like to take advantage of it.Don't get
me wrong I do agree with your $10 idea.

Hunter, the RTR-1 has to be connected to the actual radio to work and the
radio has to be turned on. They have a failsafe in the unit that looks for
the keying voltage to be present on the PTT line from the radio. I got
caught by that one as well one day.

When it is playing correctly, the green light goes on and off as you move
the toggle switch.

[Flexradio] Flex3000 with N1MM: When I open a browser window, either PSDR crashes or I get a crackly audio

2013-10-26 Thread Michael Ruttenberg
Hi all

Maybe someone can point me in the right direction.

Using PSDR 2.6.4 with a Flex 3000.
VAC (full version) 4.12
4gb RAM Lenovo T420 laptop (with a relatively flimsy Firewire 800 port
installed, new Firewire 400 Expresscard on the way but not yet arrived).
Win7 Pro.
Same issue on Dell Latitude D630 (Firewire 800 port). WinXP SP3 with 1gb
RAM. Samsung SSD.

The Line1 and Line 2 VAC lines playback and record are set in Sounds to 2
Channel 96000hz audio as per
http://kc.flexradio.com/KnowledgebaseArticle50504.aspx.

N1MM v13.10.1

My buffers are set as follows:
Flex measured Sampling rate: 48khz, buffer size 1024, safe mode 1 (low
latency was no different behaviour)

PSDR Audio - Primary: buffer size 1024, sample rate 48000 (was same
behaviour when 2048 / 96000)
PSDR Audio - VAC1: Windows WDM-KS, buffer size 1024, 48000
PSDR DSP - Options: all 5 buffers set to 1024

PSDR runs on the win7 machine at around 9% CPU.

Basically, when I click Buck on N1MM (or open any new browser window) I get
crackly audio audible on the headphones, and sometimes PSDR crashes
entirely (can't remember the error but it says Continue/Quit and then I
need to reboot to restart PSDR).

Any ideas?

2013-10-26 Thread Michael Ruttenberg
Hi Ken

It is a relatively clean install. I have PSDR, N1MM, VAC, MixW, JT65HF, VE7CC
ARUser. Windows Updates are off.

AVG Free and ZoneAlarm. AVG is disabled manually for a bit of improvement.

DPC is a bit better with wireless turned of but then I am flying blind. I have
a nano wireless USB adaptor (Edimax) but it turns out that if I turn off the
main (internal) wireless then the USB one doesn't work either so I couldn't use
the USB one without the internal one grabbing the signal making the USB one
redundant.

On winXP I used to have Gboost but it seems to no longer be supported as I
installed it and dialling home fails and the forum on the Gboost site says
closed.

Frustrated and missing CQWW :( 9 out of every 10 loads ups don't start
successfully and the 1 that does work usually bombs out with an error.

[Flexradio] For Sale -- Flex-3000

2013-10-23 Thread Dr Michael Laurent Therrien
Now that my Flex-6700/SmartSDR is up and running, I find it is time to part
with my Flex-3000.

I purchased the 3000 in the Summer of 2009 and it has run flawlessly since
then. Total on air time has been modest due to a military deployment and a
period of illness in the last four years. Non-smoker.

I am selling the radio, a Granite Firewire cable, and a power cable. Asking
$900 and I will pay for shipping CONUS by UPS Ground.

Please contact me off the reflector at mike.n...@gmail.com. I can make photos
of the equipment available.

a period of illness in the last four years. Non-smoker.

I am selling the radio, a Granite Firewire cable, and a power cable.
Asking $900 and I will pay for shipping CONUS by UPS Ground.

Yes every so often a female voice saying something indiscipherable is overlaid
on the signal. If anything it shows that your TX line is working. I found it
happened on TX.

Buy the full version of VAC and data modes (and DVK for making lighter work of

[Flexradio] Flex-1500 on CW (was Re: Flex 3000 for DX'ing and SDR)

2013-09-18 Thread Michael Babineau
Phil :

There are likely a couple of things that need adjustment. But first off if you
are expecting
full break-in on CW from the Flex-1500 then you might as well put it up for
sale now.
Properly adjusted it will work as well (break-in wise as a semi-break-in rig
like the Ft-817)
but it won't do full break-in CW.

If you are getting latency on the sidetone (which is likely the case) then you
need
to adjust a few parameters in PowerSDR.

Out of the box, PowerSDR should run on almost any machine of sufficient
horsepower
but it won't necessarily run well on CW. If you read the FLex-1500 manual
section
on CW and the Flex-1500 part of the PowerSDR release notes (Page 12) they
document
quite well the three main things that potentially need to be adjusted in
PowerSDR to allow
for smooth CW operation on the Flex-1500.

Note that you must STOP PowerSDR to make these changes and then START again
to determine how effective the changes are.

The first thing is adjusting the USB Driver Buffer Setting.

This is accessed via Setup/General/Options

It is a slider the goes from Conservative on the left to Aggressive on the
Right.
You want to make it as Aggressive as you can without causing drop-outs or
distortion
in your receive Audio. My suggestion is to adjust the slider only one position
to the right
at the time, exit the SETUP, START PowerSDR and listen to a station for a while
to determine
if the change in settings is causing an issues with receive audio. Repeat this
process over and over until you either get to the most Aggressive Setting
(unlikely) or
you start to hear audio drop out or significant distortion on RX. At that point
back it off one
position. Resist the temptation to go to the most Aggressive setting first as
it may cause
PowerSDR to hang up or quit (my experience).

The second adjustment is the audio buffer size.

Repeat the same procedure as above (i.e stopping PowerSDR, but this time
changing the setting
to one smaller then Starting PowerSDR).

Setup/Audio Buffer Size - You want this to be the smallest value that doesn't
cause drop- outs
or distortion on receive. ( i.e. 256 or 128 if possible)

Setup/DSP Buffer Size - CW RX (should be 2048) only reduce this if necessary
to further
diminish sidetone delay. Changing this value to a smaller one will have an
impact on the performance of the narrower CW RX filters. I wouldn't suggest
going any smaller than 1024 otherwise you are diminishing performance of
the receiver.

Adjusting the above three settings should give you reasonable performance on CW
with
no noticeable sidetone delay.

For anyone only using a Dual core machine, if this isn't enough there are a
couple of
other tricks that help, but I only suggest trying these as a last resort.

SETUP/DISPLAY Refresh Rates Main Display FPS (normally 15, can be reduced to 7
with no ill effects). Reducing this should improve the CW performance.

If you are really just running PowerSDR (which is what I suggest on a dual core
machine)
then you can increase the Process Priority by a notch with no ill effects.

SETUP/GENERAL/OPTIONS Process Priority (I don't recommend going with a setting
higher than Above Normal or High, the default setting is Normal).

The other worth mentioning is that if you are using the internal keyer in the
Flex-1500,
be aware that if you enable Iambic sending it will default to Iambic A. Many
people
(myself included) learned Iambic B and I couldn't send with Iambic A if my life
depended
on it.

The CW Keyers settings within PowerSDR can be accessed via the
Setup/General/DSP level
(yeah I know this doesn't make a lot of sense the first time).

For CW operation, in my experience with the last two releases of PowerSDR, you
need a minimum
hardware configuration of Intel Core Duo (2 GHZ), with WIN7 (XP works but you
will get more out
of your Dual-core processor with WIN7) and at least 4 GB of RAM. If you want
to run a lot of
other software (loggers, Digimode programs, email etc) then I recommend
something like an Intel
Core I5 based computer. I am currently using an Acer Laptop with a AMD
A10-4500m (Quad Core)
and 10 GB of RAM with WIN8 and it works great. Don't forget that the computer
is about 80%
of the Radio.

Best of luck

I realized that I forgot to answer your question on how to adjust the Sidetone
level on CW.

To do this go to the Transmit tab (i.e. SETUP/Transmit). You will see
something called TX AF

sidetone level
for CW.

Hi Mike

Not much really. Keep your receipt. If you have any warranty issues they
will be honoured by Radio World. I keep a copy of my receipts in the box
(if I keep the box). You don't need the original as they can quickly look
it up under your callsign.

This is the case for most of North America.

If you aren't sure, give Radio World a call and ask them. They will
confirm the same thing.

Hi David

I sometimes see the same thing on my 3000. However, I just never worry too
much about it. The difference between 74 and 100 watts is so small in

What do you see in CW? If you get 100W in CW, then it is an audio

Have you done an audio chain alignment?

PEP power measurements are at best an approximation.

Re: [Flexradio] Macros

2013-08-26 Thread Michael Logan
To me it makes sense that it runs both macros. If the monitor is on it would
again turn it on (no real action) then it would turn it off. If it is off it
would turn it on again and then immediately off.

I recently added a macro to do the antenna tune function and had thought about
adding the MON ON macro so that when I tune, the monitor would be turned on.
Then I could have a macro just to turn it off. Since a tune takes just a couple
seconds if I want to monitor I can just do a quick auto tune on the band. If
you no longer want to monitor then you can turn it off at any time.

Since you usually tune the antenna when you change frequency you would always
be monitoring by default.

It's not optimal but it should work. I have not actually tried it yet but I had
the idea a couple days ago.

Let us know if it works and suffices.

Re: [Flexradio] Power SDR Quits!

2013-07-28 Thread Michael Walker
Blue screens are hardware/driver issues and nothing to do with a virus.
The can be related to memory issues as well. Sometimes just reseating the
memory chips can clear up a problem like this.

Most, if not all driver issues seem to have gone away and are a thing of
the past. What type of firewire card are you using?

Also, you don't say which operating system you are running on and how much
physical memory.

I have a few other ideas and they related to less memory and the page file,
which is store on hard drive and a failing hard drive also contributing to
similar issues.

[Flexradio] Help for CW keying in Wintest needed

2013-07-06 Thread Michael Ruttenberg
Hi all

I have a Flex3000 and up to now I've used N1MM with it just fine using the
guide at
http://flexradiowiki.abrohamnealsoftware.com/mw/index.php?title=N1MM
To recap, a pair for Com7-17 and 8-18. CW on Com7.

In N1MM I use Ctrl-K and pre-programmed F-keys for most of my QSOs, so
don't use any interface to key the rig and send my CW, and that's how I've
done it for about 3 years, and I'm happy with this.

I now have Win-Test and I have CAT control working on Win-Test but I am not
sure what I'm missing to get CW keying working from the Alt-K menu.

Here's my config:
Com7 - Network 9800 8N1 pin4 = CW, RTS = Always Off, Active with: Both
radios
Com8 - Radio 1 96090 8N1 pin4 DTR = Always off, pin 7 RTS = Always off,
active with: Both Radios

Radio 1 = FT-2000
Radio 2 = FT-2000

The above setup is to mirror as closesly as I can the settings from the
Wiki and N1MM settings.

When I key CW (ALT-K - the Wintest equilavlent of N1MM's Ctrl-K) nothing
happens. No PTT, no sidetone.

As I say, I do not have a Winkeyer or Microham module or similar.

Can anyone please point me in the right direction.

TIA
Mike

2013-07-06 Thread Michael Ruttenberg
Hi Doug

Good point about the FT2000. I misread that as Ts2000. That said, my starting
point was to set radio 1 and 2 as Kenwood HF and had no luck there either.

Thanks for the hawkeyes but no cigar as yet.

Other suggestions still welcome (or a Wiki section for Wintest.

BTW I am using Wintet 4.10 (licenced) and PSDR 2.3.5.

Re: [Flexradio] Amplifier for 1500?

2013-06-24 Thread Michael
I didn't think kits had to be certified as long as they were being sold
to licensed radio amateurs but I've researched further and the fact that
it's an amp clouds the issue. Another hassle brought to us courtesy of
our good buddies on the CB service. At any rate, I agree with you
about wishing they would get it into production. I love my little amp
I've got now but I wish I had the microprocessor control and the other
bells and whistles. Price wise the Hardrock 50 will blow anything close
to it out of the water if they ever get certification.

[Flexradio] Temperature and Voltage Display Anomalies

2013-06-22 Thread Michael Logan, KB7IUV
Funny thing just started happening...I typically have the temp/voltage
dialog displayed on my PC. Now when I use the mouse wheel to
scroll-tune the panadapter window, the voltage displays 6.4 volts and
the temp shows -450 degrees F!

Once I stop tuning, it returns to 13.8 volts and normal temp (95 degress
F right now).

Anyone seen this before? I have a Dell Optiplex 7010 with i5 CPU @
3.2GHz, 8 GB RAM, 64-bit Win7. I am running PowerSDR, CommCat, DX
ATlas, CwType, Postbox, Explorer, Chrome, and IonoProbe all at the same
time and CPU never gets above 25%.

In fact, with only PowerSDR running it also happens. This after
restarting PC even!?

Re: [Flexradio] Using FlexControl with 2 PowerSDR Instances

2013-06-20 Thread Michael Logan
I know this not answering your question, but I considered buying a flex control
but then decided against once I found what I really was wanting. I use a newer
mouse that has a free-wheeling mouse wheel. You can switch it back to normal
detent mode but I usually leave it in the free-wheel mode. The wheel is
weighted like a little flywheel. I usually keep my tuning step at 50Hz. Give
the wheel a spin and it will continue to spin for about 5-10 seconds. I can
easily scan half the band with one flick. It also allows the type of control
you would get with a knob. I'm glad I did not bother with flex control because
now my hand never leaves the mouse. You can then tune either radio with same
mouse.

As to your question below, I would hazard to guess that having each knob use a
different USB port, you could easily assign the correct port to each instance
of PSDR.

Subject: [Flexradio] CW keying latency issue with the Flex 1500

Still dealing with the cw latency issue here. After installing the latest
version of Power SDR I did notice an improvement which allowed me to bump
up the keyer speed when using an external paddle. Still not where I would
like it but an improvement none the less.

I don't think I have seen the screen display addressed as it relates to
this issue in the past other than seeing mention of 'backing off' a couple
of settings which seemed to improve somewhat the cw keying. While operating
today my mouse got bumped and the cursor landed on the screen blanking
block in the bottom right hand portion of the SDR display which I knew
nothing about and the display went blank. Interesting..screen on/screen
off. Then I got to wondering if the screen display coding functions might
be sucking up computer resources. Fired up the keyer and started increasing
 the speeds.

Joy in hamville. So long as I kept the screen blanked, I was able to make
a big leap in keying speeds. Previously I was struggling at 12-15wpm before
the latency would cause me keying mistakes. Now I am able to take it up to
25wpm more or less comfortably and not have to struggle too bad to keep
from making keying mistakes. A bit higher though and they start creeping
 back in.

I can live with 25 wpm although I would dearly love there to be no limit to
the upper end or at least have it above 40wpm.

But for now I am somewhat happy. Not as happy as I could be but happier
 than what I was.

I just thought I would pass along my experience in case any others were
having issues with the same situation and mite benefit from my experience.
Forgive me if this has been addressed elsewhere as I have not run across it.

 http://flexradiowiki.abrohamnealsoftware.com/mw/index.php?title=N1MM. I can't
believe I've already hit a brick wall on the very first step (well, step
1.2). Step 1.2.1 says to select COM18 in the PSDR CAT Control setup. Can't
do it. Next to Port the pull down says None. Clicking on it gets you more of
 the same; None.

VSP Manager says there are no Hardware serial ports, which considering the
computer has no serial port connections kinda makes sense. On the other hand
it sounds unusual. The computer does have three USB 3.0 ports.

The instructions aren't asking me to create COM18. It sounds like it's
supposed to be there already, but it isn't. Like I said, dead in the water
 on step 1.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

[Flexradio] microHAM CW Keyer and Flex-3000

2013-06-15 Thread Dr Michael Laurent Therrien
Does anyone have experience setting up and configuring the microHAM CW Keyer
and a Flex-3000? I just acquired a CW Keyer with cabling for Flex radios but
cannot fathom how to mate the two.
