battery issue

2004-09-28 Thread J-J
Hello all,
New to the list, joined because I have a problem I can't seem to
resolve on my own.

My spare battery in my 12" PBG4 never shows the time remaining. It will
show the percentage, but not accurately. It will show 98%, then tick
down to about 92%, then the PB will sleep, as if it's out of juice.
Obviously, this is not a good performance from a spare battery, and I
travel often, so I really need it to perform.

Is there a way to make it reset itself? Some utility or procedure I can
use to get it to show the time remaining again, and get it back to full
capacity?

Cheers,
J-J (Chicago)

OS X has some funkiness on an older G3 PB. The easiest way to achieve
what you want would be to mount the CD while in OS X, then select it
as the startup disk. Then re-boot.

If you have the room in the 12 GB partition, you can install OS 9
there. It doesn't have to be installed in the first 8 GB.

Somebody help me out here, I don't want to give bad advice. Will Dave
be able to **boot* into OS 9 is he didn't install the OS 9 drivers
when he partitioned in OS X? I can't imagine that he did if he
doesn't have OS 9 installed.

>Again: Wallstreet 300gHz, 192mb RAM, 20g HD (8g/12g partitions)

Wow, 192 MB is not very much when it comes to running OS X. Is
there's any way you can manage to up it to 384, you'll find OS X runs
faster and quite a bit better for you.

HTH,

Wallstreet LCD backlight not turning on after wake from sleep / installing OS9

2004-09-28 Thread Dave NovaK
Just like the subject says, my Wallstreet's LCD backlight won't turn back
on
after it wakes up from going to sleep. I also have to manually hit the the
brightness control button (either bright or dark) upon each bootup to get
the LCD backlight going.

I'm running 10.2.8, and when I originally loaded the OS in, I didn't have
>this problem. Maybe three months down the line, for no good reason, it
>started doing this.

Wallstreet 300mhz, 192mb RAM, 20g HD, CD/DVD, OS 10.2.8

Reboot in OS 9, from HD or CD. It's the only thing I know helps.

That would be an option... if I had OS9 installed.
How do I revert back from 10.2.8 to something else? Can I undo those
"automatic updates"?

I want OS9 installed.
Why I don't have OS9 installed:
I replaced the HD with a 20gig Travelstar.
So I had a completely new hard drive, and OSX discs, but no OS9 discs. I
installed 10.2.8 to the first partition (8gb rule), and had another 12g
partition.

I can't seem to get the 'book to boot from the OS9 CD, tho (yes, I'm holding
the C key throughout the boot). It sucks, and I really want to be able to
use OS9.

What gives?
Again: Wallstreet 300gHz, 192mb RAM, 20g HD (8g/12g partitions)

No, it needs to up and running.

That's why some people prefer to either perform them manually, or
have another utility do them at a more "convenient time."

Select on of your older data file, do "Info" in the Finder. In the window
that appears, open the "Open with" section tab. There will be a popup menu
there. Click on it, then select the item "Other...". Navigate to find the
application that should open that document. If you want all other documents
of this type to be opened by the selected application, click the "Change
All" button.

Know that there is a little gotcha to this. After some people theorically
demonstrated that unknown document could trigger the launch of unknown
application and thus, presenting a threat, Apple in one of their latest
system update did change how the application document setting works. You
won't be able to set all documents of a certain type to default to a
specific application of your choosing until you launch the application at
least once. Odd, but I spent about an hour the other day trying to set the
default app for a document type before finding, after trials, errors and
experimentations, that I had never launched this application on my new
PowerBook.

You don't need much force to put RAM in. Just follow the instructions. You
have to insert the chip at an angle, then usually put it down. There are 2
clips on each side that should clip the chip. The instructions in my
"Getting started" manual were clear and illustrated. The only thing to watch
for is to make sure that the chip is fully inserted in the connector before
you clip it.

Apple set the daily maintenance task to run at 3:15 AM, the weekly at
4:30 AM on Saturdays, and the monthly at 5:30 AM the first day of
each month.

You can pick up free utilities that will run these scripts
automatically at any time that you want.

You can also run all of these by hand and read its output in the
terminal by doing:
sudo /etc/daily
sudo /etc/weekly
sudo /etc/monthly

See "Learning the Terminal in Jaguar" for a great discussion about
these tasks.

>Can I see that somehow on the hard disc?

If you're asking if you can see *if* they ran, or *what* they did,
the logs (both the most recent and the tar'd recent history stack)
are in /var/log. This directory contains quite a collection of logs
from various subsystems.

You can
1) Open a new Finder window.
2) Choose Go -> Go to Folder (or press command+shift+G)
3) Type "/var/log" and press return.
4) Check the modification date on "daily.out" -- if it's today, then
your scripts ran last night.
(daily.out is the log file for the daily script. There's also
weekly.out and monthly.out)

Bob

actually that sounds like a major hardware failure. Get in and make
sure the processor card and memory are properly seated.

Otherwise, I'd suspect mobo or processor card failure.
Well, considering it booted once with a ROM checksum error, the
processor card is probably dead. After checking to see if the processor
is seated, and it still doesn't boot, then you will need to replace the
processor card. I suspected that it /didn't/ become unseated, as the
ROM checksum error would not have happened (the ROM, CPU and RAM are
all on the CPU card, so a not-so-good connection to the logic board
will not cause a checksum error). Likely culprit is that the ROM chip
failed completely, or came unsoldered from the CPU board. It could be
fixable, but not worth the pain in my opinion, a new processor card is
less effort and pain.

Under OS X you repair disk permissions instead of rebuillding desktop.

If you don't leave the system on overnight at least once a week, get
something like MacJanitor and manually run the various cron scripts
that normally run at 3AM. This rotates logs, cleans up temp files, etc
etc.
There is no 'desktop' to rebuild, per se.

Here's what *I* did.

A) Purchased a firewire case,
B) Purchased a standard Pioneer DVD burner (the 8x model) from
newegg.com (around $75 shipped). Pioneer is the OEM for many of the
Apple SuperDrives.
C) Set the drive's jumper to master and put the drive in the case.
D) Plugged it into my powerbook.
E) Followed the instructions at

F) Burned away

If you don't leave the system on overnight at least once a week, get
something like MacJanitor and manually run the various cron scripts
that normally run at 3AM. This rotates logs, cleans up temp files,
etc etc.
Ah! I was wunderin what our new PB was doing last night!
And here I figured it was playing Chess.

There is no 'desktop' to rebuild, per se.
How does OS X associate file -> app?
Da reason I'm asking... I copied a bunch of ancient MacInTax and
TurboTax documents from our old PB (G3; OS 9.2.2) to our new
PowerBook (15" G4; Panther). Also copied a folder that contains each
tax app, going back to '95, and their prefs.

On my old PB, under OS 9, double-clicking an older tax data file
automagically opened the older/matching tax app. But now under
Panther, they all launch the newest app only. I have to manually
launch the older app then open the file from within. How do I fix
this in OS X?

Aside: Apparently Intuit's installers were pretty dumb. All the
installs since going to OS 9 on the old PB include the OS X vers of
the app too. So the most recent few years of apps don't
start/require Classic. Of course those older installers won't run at
all under Panther or its Classic -- which is why I did the mass-copy.

Thx,
- Dan.

adding RAM

2004-09-28 Thread Alan C . Magnus
Hi All,
I've been trying to add RAM (Crucial, 512MB, 2700 DDR SODIMMM) to my Al
PowerBook G4. This was bought from a store in FT. Lauderdale. When I
tried to boot, no go. I replaced my original RAM and all was fine. As i
had to leave the States, I had a friend do the return for me. He said
the same RAM was put into another similar PowerBook and worked. Anyway,
on my instructions, he had it replaced. I got the replacement today and
had the same problem. The book will not boot with the new RAM. Either
alone, or with one of the original 256 sticks.

Is there a trick, special method, to installing the RAM? I did try to
use a bit of force but still no luck.

On the US Qwerty keyboard, yes, the "Option" key is next to the "Command"
key. Although it might depend on the keyboard mapping you have. Since you're
using OS X in another language, maybe you have a different keyboard mapping
than the US mapping and maybe the "Option" key is not next to the "Command"
key. I think on recent keyboards, it also has the smaller label "alt".

Reboot in OS 9, from HD or CD. It's the only thing I know helps.

This problem occurred already with 10.2.0 in WS II.

Unless you *are* a Mac professional, what's the big deal? Is there a
*need* for you to be taken seriously (eg "grave", vs simply in good
faith)?

This is an issue with any field of specialized knowledge. Certain terms
have very specific meanings within that field. As a greater protion of the
general public become familiar with the field those terms will find
their way into the vocabulary, but will often lack the specifity inheirent
in the term originally. Examples from the fields of medicine and law come
to mind.

BTW - nothing frustrated me more when trying to learn Windows so many
years ago than simply being told (for example): Hit F1, Tab, F3 and Enter.
No thought at all to tell me what those actions entailed, just be a
monkey and push those buttons. Using the term "flower" brings back that
feeling. Visually descriptive, but meaningless without clarification.
Guess that's why we have specific terms.

..and we really don't need to make the Mac *sound* friendly, do we? It
just is ;-)

Well that could be your personal preference. But after you've gotten
so used to Quark, you almost feel you HAVE to use Quark out of respect
for what they've done. Not to mention Quark just feels more powerful
and responsive. InDesign is very VERY slow. At least on this G3. Quark
on the other hand feels as fast as 4.0. Speaking of which, Quark 4 can
still be used quite wonderfully on a Quadra 800 in a modern work
environment (amazing!). Quark may not have made "massive" advancements
in years, but that is because it already made HUGE GIGANTIC ENORMOUS
advancements in the past that pushed it wa ahead of its time, and
only now is Adobe catching up.

Quark allows you to be more productive on older hardware, as well as
newer hardware.

Sorry I'm just a HUGE fan of Quark and that hit a nerve. I'm crazy!

You're right. Adobe InDesign IS the most terrible Quark Xpress wannabe
ever crafted by human hands.

I can't believe Bradley University chose InDesign over Quark. Perhaps
they're brain dead? Probably the same people that chose Windows PCs to
replace the Macs in roughly half the Art Center.

Its nice to have competition and all, but come on. Quark is Quark.
There's no two ways about it.

Using something other than Quark for page layout is like using
something other than Photoshop for image editing. That just sounds
unfathomable doesn't it?

use a lot! I work as a Graphic Designer at a Toy/Game company and we've
converted all our Printers and Manufacturers over to InDesign and they all
say its very easy and much better. I believe it to be more intuitive than
Quark and less clumsy. If your are big photoshop or illustrator user it
should be an easy transition. And they all work together really well.
Quark also hasn't made a big software advancement in a long time. InDesign
is the latest and greatest. Quark is quickly losing its user-base and if it
doesn't make a huge change and advancementsit will be a thing of the
past. (in my eyes it already is!)

I've received tons of help on lists like this, and I always weigh in

I always try to be as succinct and accurate as possible when describing

Funny, I had exactly the same feeling the first time I used Quark and Word.
I think it is mostly a question of what you are used to. When I first
started using ID I was so used to PageMaker and ID was similar enough to
PageMaker that I tried working as if I were still using PageMaker. That
wasn't very successful, to say the least.

Since the community college has a site license for things Adobe, I grabbed
the InDesign Classroom in a Book and went through it. I'm not usually a fan
of this line of books but seeing ID used by people who understood how it was
meant to be used really helped. And the fact that Adobe makes it very easy
to create personal workspaces was also very helpful.

Dave,
Assuming you have OS 9 installed on your WS, you might solve your
problem by restarting in OS 9, and then go back to OS X. That's
worked for a number of other users.

Another option, though not as acceptable I'm sure, is revert back to
OS 10.2.5 or 10.2.6. There appears to be a problem with update 10.2.8
for some users of G3 PowerBooks.

Good Luck,

I'm sorry you feel like my comments were a personal attack at you,
Dan. I went out of my way to emphasize that that wasn't the case. Of
course you are free to call the Command key whatever you want. I
never said otherwise. I was telling you how that will be perceived by
some of the people who will be in a position to help you if you need
it.

FWIW when I deal with people who don't know what the Command key is,
I normally just tell them that it's the first key to the left of the
space-bar. Most of the people I deal with are smart enough to figure
that one out.

I don't believe in flame-wars (only the immature resort to calling
names while hidden behind the invisibility of an email address), so I
didn't go there, and I'm not going to go there. There is certainly
room for people to disagree without lashing out at the other person.
